Hey friends, welcome to a new edition to Newstart Now. 00:01:11.57\00:01:15.44 I'm your host Damon Snead, standing in for Ron Giononni 00:01:15.47\00:01:19.04 and we have in our studio today Miss Beverly Haffner. 00:01:19.07\00:01:22.74 Let's take a look at her life before Newstart. 00:01:22.78\00:01:26.55 I am here because I love this place, 00:01:26.58\00:01:34.72 I worked here for four years, I've been to an 18 day program 00:01:34.76\00:01:38.59 and I like what happens when I am here. 00:01:38.63\00:01:42.13 I want to lose weight...more weight and I want to get off 00:01:42.16\00:01:48.20 medications. I am not on a lot but want back to where I was 00:01:48.24\00:01:52.37 none. I'd like to get off of the medications if I can. 00:01:52.41\00:01:56.95 I do, I take Timolol for my eyes, but that's another doctor 00:01:56.98\00:02:00.92 and another problem. 00:02:00.95\00:02:02.52 So, um, but that's all I'm on and I'd like to get off of the 00:02:02.55\00:02:07.99 blood pressure and so forth, I don't want to have to take 00:02:08.02\00:02:11.69 medication, if I can avoid it. 00:02:11.73\00:02:14.26 Welcome back friends. 00:02:47.23\00:02:48.56 Miss Beverly, welcome to the program. Thank you. 00:02:48.60\00:02:52.37 How are you doing? 00:02:52.40\00:02:53.74 I'm doing very well, thank you. 00:02:53.77\00:02:55.47 I had a good report. 00:02:55.50\00:02:57.27 So tell us a little bit about your experience here 00:02:57.31\00:03:00.14 at Newstart. This time. Yes ma'am. 00:03:00.18\00:03:04.01 Oh yeah because you were here before. 00:03:04.05\00:03:05.88 I worked here for four years and then I came back for the 00:03:05.91\00:03:08.88 eighteen day program four or five years ago. 00:03:08.92\00:03:11.55 And so now you are back again. Back again. 00:03:11.59\00:03:13.69 So what's been something that stood out to you this time 00:03:13.72\00:03:17.39 that's really been a blessing to you? 00:03:17.43\00:03:19.09 I see a lot of changes, I feel that it's beautifully run, 00:03:19.13\00:03:26.13 everything runs smoothly, they have it well planned. 00:03:26.17\00:03:29.60 And the speeches that we hear, the meetings have been very 00:03:29.64\00:03:35.78 inspirational, yours was especially inspirational 00:03:35.81\00:03:39.71 and fulfilled my dream of being re-baptized, for which I am very 00:03:39.75\00:03:44.95 excited about. 00:03:44.99\00:03:46.32 Yeah, now you bring that out in the beginning here 00:03:46.35\00:03:49.89 about your re-baptism that you had. 00:03:49.92\00:03:52.29 Can you tell us a little bit about that, 00:03:52.33\00:03:54.16 what brought you to that decision or... 00:03:54.20\00:03:55.66 Well, I had been thinking about it for six or eight months 00:03:55.70\00:04:00.00 and thinking about it at home of course, 00:04:00.04\00:04:03.41 and trying to figure out what I wanted to do and so forth. 00:04:03.44\00:04:08.04 But when I decided to come here, I thought it would be fun 00:04:08.08\00:04:12.91 to be baptized in Moses' rock. 00:04:12.95\00:04:15.52 Just to something exciting about that. 00:04:15.55\00:04:18.02 And I have to bring someone with me because of my eyesight 00:04:18.05\00:04:23.53 and I can't see to do things, so they make me bring a 00:04:23.56\00:04:25.96 companion and I thought, who can I take? 00:04:25.99\00:04:30.10 I want to take someone who also needs something from Weimar 00:04:30.13\00:04:34.40 so they could get some good out of it too. 00:04:34.44\00:04:36.94 And I heard a friend across the room at her table during lunch- 00:04:36.97\00:04:43.65 time, and I heard her say the word Weimar. 00:04:43.68\00:04:48.52 I don't know what she said before or after, 00:04:48.55\00:04:51.09 what the sentence was, I just heard the word. 00:04:51.12\00:04:54.29 And since it was in my head, it popped out. 00:04:54.32\00:04:58.36 And after lunch, I saw her outside in the hall and I said, 00:04:58.39\00:05:02.10 did you say you wanted to go to Weimar? 00:05:02.13\00:05:03.83 She said well, I think I need to. I said you are going. 00:05:03.87\00:05:09.77 And that's Miss Daisy. That's Miss Daisy. 00:05:09.80\00:05:12.14 We'll be talking to her later. Yeah and I just immediately 00:05:12.17\00:05:15.38 thank God because that was Him talking. 00:05:15.41\00:05:18.45 That's right, providential speaking, this is who 00:05:18.48\00:05:21.18 He wanted to come now... It's interesting you know... 00:05:21.22\00:05:23.02 Cause she doesn't remember saying Weimar at the table 00:05:23.05\00:05:25.62 either. -That's right. 00:05:25.65\00:05:27.32 Now how was the experience here with the food for you, 00:05:27.36\00:05:32.36 was that a good experience? 00:05:32.39\00:05:34.56 It's been delicious and you know the things I don't like, 00:05:34.60\00:05:39.47 It's alright, I don't like everything at home either. 00:05:39.50\00:05:41.40 Alright. [Laughter] And part of it is you just 00:05:41.44\00:05:44.64 have to change your taste buds and so... 00:05:44.67\00:05:47.08 Now what kind of medical changes did you...did you experience 00:05:47.11\00:05:50.38 any positives, or any medicines that you may have been of off? 00:05:50.41\00:05:54.48 Well, they are trying to get me off blood pressure medicine 00:05:54.52\00:05:57.09 and I think he's going to make it because it's going down 00:05:57.12\00:05:59.82 and...- So you had good gains in that then. 00:05:59.85\00:06:02.76 Yeah, everything has gone down, the sugar, the blood 00:06:02.79\00:06:06.06 pressure and the weight, so the weight hasn't gone much, 00:06:06.09\00:06:11.23 but they told me last night that I'd lost 3" in my waist 00:06:11.27\00:06:15.17 so that was worth... Well that's a big deal. 00:06:15.20\00:06:17.17 So you see everything moving down, the weight's down, 00:06:17.21\00:06:20.98 the high blood pressure is going down, the blood sugars 00:06:21.01\00:06:24.05 have dropped. This is what this program does. 00:06:24.08\00:06:26.38 That's what I came for. 00:06:26.41\00:06:27.75 Yeah and to boot, you got the spiritual side as well. 00:06:27.78\00:06:30.69 - Exactly. So tell us a little bit about your doctor, 00:06:30.72\00:06:32.82 Dr. Kuninobu...I guess... Dr. K-Yeah, we call him Dr. K. 00:06:32.85\00:06:38.03 He tells you, just say Dr. K. So what was your experience 00:06:38.06\00:06:41.36 with him. Oh, he's been very good, he's kept up with it and 00:06:41.40\00:06:45.23 ordered what I need so he can tell how I am going and 00:06:45.27\00:06:48.30 I just had an appointment with him and he said everything 00:06:48.34\00:06:50.84 is going the right direction and so he's happy. 00:06:50.87\00:06:53.34 Yeah. So. Yeah, so he's a good man too, he's another praying 00:06:53.38\00:06:58.91 doctor. You don't see too many of those in the world today. 00:06:58.95\00:07:01.82 No, you don't. 00:07:01.85\00:07:03.32 So now your overall experience you would say it was wonderful, 00:07:03.35\00:07:09.26 great... I've been very happy. Very very nice. 00:07:09.29\00:07:13.66 And Daisy has been a magnificent companion. 00:07:13.70\00:07:17.87 Well, you all two have been the grandmothers of the program. 00:07:17.90\00:07:21.14 We're the oldest ones here. 00:07:21.17\00:07:22.84 Yeah. I can't call her mom though because she is only 00:07:22.87\00:07:25.21 six months older than I am. Right, she's almost at your age? 00:07:25.24\00:07:28.54 She's at 87? She will be next month and I'll be 87 in 00:07:28.58\00:07:32.65 January. Yeah, that says a lot, at that advanced age with 00:07:32.68\00:07:37.22 many more years to come, that you could come here in your 00:07:37.25\00:07:41.59 late 80's, both of you 'all and both experience a rejuvenation 00:07:41.62\00:07:47.36 of spiritual and health. 00:07:47.40\00:07:49.23 Well she didn't think she could have anything done, 00:07:49.26\00:07:52.93 she was just going to be my "COMPANION" 00:07:52.97\00:07:55.34 but we worked it out so that she has and I am so thrilled 00:07:55.37\00:08:00.14 cause she needs help too. 00:08:00.18\00:08:02.11 She has some problems, physical problems that need to be 00:08:02.14\00:08:06.11 taken care of and I didn't want to bring her here and 00:08:06.15\00:08:08.05 take her home sick, so... 00:08:08.08\00:08:10.49 So now, how did you do with exercise out here, how was that 00:08:10.52\00:08:13.92 for you? Well the walking was wonderful, I walk a lot 00:08:13.96\00:08:17.53 at home, so that was no problem and the water, 00:08:17.56\00:08:20.80 I drink lots of water at home so that was no problem. 00:08:20.83\00:08:24.57 It's the up and down the hills, like at the baptismal 00:08:24.60\00:08:31.17 and when we went to the mine and the breakfast... 00:08:31.21\00:08:34.94 You know it's hard in some areas because I can't see 00:08:34.98\00:08:37.08 where I'm stepping and that's... 00:08:37.11\00:08:38.61 But you did well physically though. 00:08:38.65\00:08:40.75 Physically I am all right... The very first day I tried 00:08:40.78\00:08:44.35 to do the morning exercises, the stretchercises 00:08:44.39\00:08:48.66 and one of them is to put your leg back and I did the 00:08:48.69\00:08:54.76 prosthetic side where my prosthetic hip is and 00:08:54.80\00:08:58.40 that was a no-no, I shouldn't have and so my hip has been 00:08:58.43\00:09:02.24 hurting the whole time. But I did it to myself 00:09:02.27\00:09:05.24 and it will get better. 00:09:05.27\00:09:07.28 So...So, yeah...So how did you find the various parts 00:09:07.31\00:09:12.48 of the program, the various directors and therapists 00:09:12.51\00:09:15.48 working together. Was it...how did you feel about all of that? 00:09:15.52\00:09:18.05 It's incredible. I just feel that God has led in every area 00:09:18.09\00:09:22.26 of this place because I thought it was great when I was here 00:09:22.29\00:09:25.19 and it just seems to get better each time I come. 00:09:25.23\00:09:28.40 Yeah, this is a great group that is here. Yes. 00:09:28.43\00:09:30.43 A great praying group...Yes, everyone works together well, 00:09:30.47\00:09:33.64 everything runs smoothly, the food is good and even the 00:09:33.67\00:09:38.27 way they serve that and get it through and get it out and I've 00:09:38.31\00:09:42.11 been very impressed. 00:09:42.14\00:09:43.48 Very well, so what is going to be the thing you take away 00:09:43.51\00:09:47.52 from here from the health perspective and from the 00:09:47.55\00:09:51.52 spiritual perspective, what will be the one things that you are 00:09:51.55\00:09:53.82 going to remember most about both aspects? 00:09:53.86\00:09:56.39 Well health wise they helped me get to a place where I can 00:09:56.42\00:10:01.63 improve. Because the eyes are not going to improve 00:10:01.66\00:10:07.64 and I know that, that's no problem. 00:10:07.67\00:10:09.34 I'm living with it and have for some time, but the other part, 00:10:09.37\00:10:15.58 the physical, the exercise and all, I'll just keep doing 00:10:15.61\00:10:19.71 what I've been doing and it should be getting better. 00:10:19.75\00:10:22.98 The spiritual part has been very very good, 00:10:23.02\00:10:27.86 I appreciated every...your programs in the morning and 00:10:27.89\00:10:32.39 the part of the baptism and everything and having 00:10:32.43\00:10:35.76 Daisy do it with me, was just beyond belief. 00:10:35.80\00:10:39.93 Yeah, you' all two have been a real blessing for the whole 00:10:39.97\00:10:44.21 program. She's precious. 00:10:44.24\00:10:45.57 Both of you. 00:10:45.61\00:10:47.08 So now going home, what are your plans, 00:10:47.11\00:10:50.05 what are your thoughts? 00:10:50.08\00:10:51.41 I'm already in my head thinking how I am going to change my room 00:10:51.45\00:10:56.15 get rid of...I've been there for 12 and 1/2 years 00:10:56.18\00:10:58.79 and when I came, I had two weeks to plan, get rid of stuff 00:10:58.82\00:11:05.89 and get here, and I didn't get rid of enough stuff. 00:11:05.93\00:11:10.37 The earthquake took care of some of it, but the rest of it 00:11:10.40\00:11:16.00 I am trying to get rid of and see what I can give to Dorcas 00:11:16.04\00:11:18.91 and so forth and pare down, that's what I'm trying to do. 00:11:18.94\00:11:23.61 I think that has worked well, I mean I am planning on it 00:11:23.65\00:11:27.75 working well. Yes yes. 00:11:27.78\00:11:29.12 And we have worship every morning where I am 00:11:29.15\00:11:33.76 and the church is across the street from where I live 00:11:33.79\00:11:36.93 so spiritually we are well fed and I appreciate that. 00:11:36.96\00:11:42.33 So you going to keep on doing what is good? 00:11:42.36\00:11:44.83 Oh yes. I hope to do better. 00:11:44.87\00:11:46.70 And do better and get rid of what's no good? 00:11:46.74\00:11:50.01 That's what I like about this program, they teach you 00:11:50.04\00:11:53.11 not just here but they are caring for you when you go home. 00:11:53.14\00:11:55.94 They want you to be successful so they give you 00:11:55.98\00:11:58.38 that information going back home, ok let's do this, 00:11:58.41\00:12:02.08 let's keep doing this and I think that you are 00:12:02.12\00:12:04.95 in a good place. I appreciate that so much 00:12:04.99\00:12:07.79 because just having it here and going home with nothing 00:12:07.82\00:12:11.23 kind of did that the last time and so... 00:12:11.26\00:12:14.60 Well listen Beverly, we are almost out of time, 00:12:14.63\00:12:17.03 we appreciate you so much. Thank you, I appreciate you too. 00:12:17.07\00:12:22.20 Friends don't go away, we will be right back with Dr. Kuninobu. 00:12:22.24\00:12:26.64 Welcome back friends. 00:13:30.04\00:13:32.44 Today in the studio we have with us Dr. Kuninobu 00:13:32.47\00:13:35.54 Welcome my friend, how are you doing? 00:13:35.58\00:13:38.01 I am doing well Damon, thank you. 00:13:38.05\00:13:39.38 So today we are going to be talking about Miss Beverly. 00:13:39.41\00:13:43.05 Oh yes. 00:13:43.08\00:13:44.42 Yeah, and she has a very interesting story she tells 00:13:44.45\00:13:47.86 about coming here and I think that story reflects something 00:13:47.89\00:13:52.63 that's very important, especially to women of her age, 00:13:52.66\00:13:57.73 how important it might be and so what was your impression 00:13:57.77\00:14:02.07 about Miss Beverly? 00:14:02.10\00:14:03.74 I met Miss Beverly, well let's talk about that story... 00:14:03.77\00:14:07.18 Well, I think the point with her is as she shared in the 00:14:07.21\00:14:12.48 interview, so there's no secret that she's 87, 00:14:12.51\00:14:15.72 she turned 87 I think while she was here, 00:14:15.75\00:14:17.09 if I am not mistaken. So by anyone's stretch, 00:14:17.12\00:14:21.19 they wouldn't call that still young. 00:14:21.22\00:14:22.92 Nearly nine decades. 00:14:22.96\00:14:25.49 Nearly nine decades, right. 00:14:25.53\00:14:26.86 And she doesn't look it, she doesn't act like it, 00:14:26.90\00:14:30.77 even though she has many challenges, legally blind, 00:14:30.80\00:14:34.27 she uses a walker and has difficulty there... 00:14:34.30\00:14:37.01 But at any age, what I think is important is that she recognize 00:14:37.04\00:14:42.08 that she could do something to help her health to be better. 00:14:42.11\00:14:46.35 She knew that even though she was 87, she could use the 00:14:46.38\00:14:50.35 Newstart principals and get healthier and then beyond that, 00:14:50.39\00:14:54.49 she also knew that she was going to need help 00:14:54.52\00:14:57.13 because of her sight, but she didn't want to just have 00:14:57.16\00:14:59.06 anybody help her, she wanted somebody who Newstart would help 00:14:59.09\00:15:01.86 them. So she used the principle of bringing in a friend 00:15:01.90\00:15:06.84 who needed help. 00:15:06.87\00:15:08.20 I don't know if she shared that in the interview... 00:15:08.24\00:15:11.21 Yes, she shared about how God... She just started praying 00:15:11.24\00:15:15.74 and then someone out of the clear says Weimar. 00:15:15.78\00:15:20.05 Um hum. And she knew right then. 00:15:20.08\00:15:21.88 And it's been such a blessing and she's repeated over and 00:15:21.92\00:15:24.62 over, God arranged this so that my friend could come with me 00:15:24.65\00:15:27.89 because she really needed to be blessed by this as well. 00:15:27.92\00:15:30.49 Yes, so companionship is a big thing and the right companion... 00:15:30.53\00:15:35.26 because those two have been like grandmothers to the program, 00:15:35.30\00:15:37.43 they have been a blessing to everyone... 00:15:37.47\00:15:39.37 Just such sweet ladies really really sweet ladies. 00:15:40.27\00:15:42.74 Yes, so you know, what can you gather from...I mean, 00:15:42.77\00:15:47.24 why would an 86 year old and a 87 year old lady come to 00:15:47.28\00:15:51.15 Newstart? To re-boot their life when most people would think 00:15:51.18\00:15:56.42 okay, at 87 you lived pretty much all your life, 00:15:56.45\00:15:59.25 why come to places like that? You see so many people in 00:15:59.29\00:16:02.59 elderly care homes that are just wasting away, 00:16:02.62\00:16:06.09 but here are two women that come and they are just getting 00:16:06.13\00:16:09.66 ready to take off. How important is that? 00:16:09.70\00:16:11.80 I think they would probably be the first to say that they 00:16:11.83\00:16:13.90 recognize that they have a life to live to glorify God. 00:16:13.94\00:16:20.54 Um hum. You know I think that they would probably say 00:16:20.58\00:16:23.41 that and so knowing that there is anything that they can do 00:16:23.45\00:16:29.48 to represent Him better, why not. 00:16:29.52\00:16:33.99 And she came wanting to be able to exercise better, 00:16:34.02\00:16:39.53 to walk better, she wanted to lose some weight, 00:16:39.56\00:16:42.16 she had been told she had pre-diabetes and she wanted 00:16:42.20\00:16:45.63 to get that blood sugar to back off a bit. 00:16:45.67\00:16:48.94 And that's a point that we should probably bring out 00:16:48.97\00:16:51.47 regardless of age...there are many viewers out there I'm sure 00:16:51.51\00:16:54.14 who have been told they are pre-diabetic, 00:16:54.18\00:16:56.38 or maybe their parents have diabetes and a lot of people 00:16:56.41\00:17:00.92 out there hear that and think oh well, here it comes. 00:17:00.95\00:17:04.75 It's genetic, if I can't help... I can't do anything about it... 00:17:04.79\00:17:07.62 Which is not true, you know they...she knew that, 00:17:07.66\00:17:11.09 She knew that she could keep it at bay, 00:17:11.13\00:17:13.93 if she could just keep it at bay...she took her sugar, 00:17:13.96\00:17:16.03 which was on the edge of pre- diabetes when she did her 00:17:16.06\00:17:19.73 blood work at the beginning of the program. 00:17:19.77\00:17:21.70 And it has backed it off almost down to low normal, 00:17:21.74\00:17:26.17 not just normal but into low normal so she's actually done 00:17:26.21\00:17:30.11 very well with that. 00:17:30.15\00:17:31.48 And I think there are viewers that need to know that. 00:17:31.51\00:17:32.91 You don't have to succumb to the genetics that you've been given. 00:17:32.95\00:17:39.02 This is true. Called epi-genetics, our diet, 00:17:39.05\00:17:42.62 our lifestyle can affect that tremendously. 00:17:42.66\00:17:45.56 in other words, the genes may load the gun, but it's our 00:17:45.59\00:17:48.53 lifestyle that pulls the trigger. 00:17:48.56\00:17:49.90 Right! And she knew that and that's why she came here 00:17:49.93\00:17:52.77 and she's done very well. 00:17:52.80\00:17:54.14 Yeah and at 87 if you can change at 87 years old, 00:17:54.17\00:17:57.87 then there is no reason why any of us can't come to a place- 00:17:57.91\00:18:02.81 The adage of "you can't teach an old dog new tricks" 00:18:02.84\00:18:04.95 isn't true. Is not true, we've learned this 00:18:04.98\00:18:08.15 from these two ladies, Miss Beverly. That's right! 00:18:08.18\00:18:11.65 That you can re-learn to do things and even at that age, 00:18:11.69\00:18:15.59 you know. Oh, they're set in their ways, you hear that 00:18:15.62\00:18:17.73 all the time, they're never going to change 00:18:17.76\00:18:19.59 well, that's not true if you want more life and 00:18:19.63\00:18:21.43 abundant life. There is no reason why you can't apply these 00:18:22.46\00:18:26.03 principles and I know that her sugar's come down, 00:18:26.07\00:18:28.57 her blood pressure came down, she was very happy about 00:18:28.60\00:18:32.14 losing three inches off of her waist. 00:18:32.17\00:18:34.21 Yeah and she lost very well. 00:18:34.24\00:18:36.54 She's done very very well. 00:18:36.58\00:18:38.85 She's much more mobile, she's moving around a little bit more, 00:18:38.88\00:18:43.15 so yeah. 00:18:43.55\00:18:44.89 So how do you see older people like this benefiting? 00:18:44.92\00:18:53.09 Being able to come here, like her, what would be 00:18:53.13\00:18:57.40 appeal to people her age? 00:18:57.43\00:19:00.70 Good appeal to people her age. 00:19:00.74\00:19:03.47 It really doesn't matter how old we are, 00:19:03.51\00:19:08.74 the same God created that body and the machinery can improve. 00:19:08.78\00:19:14.95 The same, no matter what age you are. 00:19:14.98\00:19:17.59 No matter what age. 00:19:17.62\00:19:18.95 You know, there's a...I love the phrase that says more of us 00:19:18.99\00:19:23.16 rust out than wear out. 00:19:23.19\00:19:24.53 Because we don't do enough and there really is no limit 00:19:24.56\00:19:29.56 and they've done studies on this and even in nursing home 00:19:29.60\00:19:31.97 patients who aren't able to even get out of bed, 00:19:32.00\00:19:33.77 if they put them on an exercise programs, 00:19:33.80\00:19:35.40 they can do things more for themselves than they were able 00:19:35.44\00:19:38.44 to before the exercise program. 00:19:38.47\00:19:39.81 So there is no limit to the age in which we can improve 00:19:39.84\00:19:43.75 our fitness level. 00:19:43.78\00:19:45.11 So if you have elderly parents, if you have someone you are 00:19:45.15\00:19:49.48 dealing with grandparents, this is a great place to bring them 00:19:49.52\00:19:54.16 to get them going again. I would never have dreamed 00:19:54.19\00:19:57.73 that my grandmother, you know she became really infirmed... 00:19:57.76\00:20:01.00 I wish I would have known something like this, 00:20:01.03\00:20:02.86 it's not that expensive compared to what they can gain from that, 00:20:02.90\00:20:07.87 to get off medicines, to be able to have a more fruitful 00:20:07.90\00:20:12.81 life, more mobile life at her age. 00:20:12.84\00:20:14.88 Because she could easily vege out with her sight and just 00:20:14.91\00:20:17.58 give up but she hasn't done that. She hasn't done that. 00:20:17.61\00:20:20.28 No, so I think that's a great impetus for anybody 00:20:20.32\00:20:23.69 to come here. 00:20:23.72\00:20:25.05 Especially their age, it's a wonderful thing... 00:20:25.09\00:20:27.09 So what else struck you about her? 00:20:27.12\00:20:28.96 Maybe even from her prayer, right, her prayer life 00:20:28.99\00:20:32.43 and at that age still actively asking God to...Whew! 00:20:32.46\00:20:36.40 And she's still praying about asking Him to lead her, 00:20:36.43\00:20:39.63 she's not just stuck where she is, she's looking for to improve 00:20:39.67\00:20:42.94 where even she lives, she has been talking about moving 00:20:42.97\00:20:45.41 and finding...she's really excited, she found a place 00:20:45.44\00:20:48.94 that has a Vegan Chef in an Assisted Living place. 00:20:48.98\00:20:54.25 Isn't that something? 00:20:54.28\00:20:55.72 And so those places, we've talked about this other guests, 00:20:55.75\00:20:59.32 those places can be death traps for the diet for the 00:20:59.35\00:21:02.02 elderly people. So she's going back and who knows what kind of 00:21:02.06\00:21:05.03 changes can come in people's lives. 00:21:05.06\00:21:06.70 She's been very proactive about her diet. Um hm. 00:21:06.73\00:21:09.36 Yeah, she was a very blessing even talking to her, 00:21:09.40\00:21:14.97 she'd just tear up and cry, just so thankful that she came here. 00:21:15.00\00:21:19.31 And she's helped me to look at some of these older people 00:21:19.34\00:21:22.84 coming to these programs in a different way. 00:21:22.88\00:21:24.61 I now know, from her personal witness, she has taught me 00:21:24.65\00:21:28.95 that anyone at any age... So some of these people 00:21:28.98\00:21:32.19 that come, I'm like man, you can get out there, 00:21:32.22\00:21:33.89 you can do what she did. 00:21:33.92\00:21:35.66 She can probably tell you, it wasn't just a physical blessing 00:21:35.69\00:21:38.03 that she got her. Oh yes! 00:21:38.06\00:21:40.36 The spiritual blessing that she received. 00:21:40.40\00:21:43.37 Yeah, because she was one who really delved down deep into 00:21:43.40\00:21:48.80 the gospel. 00:21:48.84\00:21:50.17 Dr. K., unfortunately we are almost out of time. 00:21:50.21\00:21:52.84 It goes so fast. God bless. Blessing. 00:21:52.87\00:21:56.08 Don't go away friends, we will be right back. 00:21:56.11\00:21:58.61 Welcome to Weimar Institute Research. 00:22:01.98\00:22:04.52 Glad you're with us here today and today Dr. Eddie Ramirez 00:22:04.55\00:22:08.66 the head of our research department at Weimar College 00:22:08.69\00:22:11.99 who publishes about as much research or more than 00:22:12.03\00:22:16.13 the typical Harvard professor is with us here today 00:22:16.16\00:22:20.40 and Dr. Ramirez, who did you do this research with? 00:22:20.44\00:22:25.54 Yes, we are looking at the participants of the 00:22:25.57\00:22:28.44 Newstart program, there's a particular sub-group of patients 00:22:28.48\00:22:32.85 that worries us as doctors. 00:22:32.88\00:22:34.65 And that is after females go through their menopause 00:22:34.68\00:22:39.42 sometimes things are fine and suddenly they go through 00:22:39.45\00:22:42.06 menopause and things to out of whack 00:22:42.09\00:22:45.33 and we are focusing on that particular group of people. 00:22:45.39\00:22:49.16 The female hormones actually protect them some from chronic 00:22:49.20\00:22:52.93 diseases like heart disease and stroke and it actually 00:22:52.97\00:22:58.47 raises their HDL cholesterol, their good cholesterol some. 00:22:58.51\00:23:02.84 And for years we thought that just being a male was a risk 00:23:02.88\00:23:07.18 for factor for heart disease. 00:23:07.22\00:23:08.65 But then when we started taking a look at post-menopausal 00:23:08.68\00:23:11.65 women, we find out that their heart disease is just as bad as 00:23:11.69\00:23:15.66 males. In fact within ten years of going through menopause, 00:23:15.69\00:23:18.29 the rates are identical again and so we're concerned 00:23:18.33\00:23:22.16 about this post-menopausal period. 00:23:22.20\00:23:24.83 Now for years, doctors though the solution is to keep 00:23:24.87\00:23:30.21 these hormones around, so they would give them 00:23:30.24\00:23:32.51 more hormones as they are going through menopause 00:23:32.54\00:23:35.54 to help prevent the heart diseases and strokes, 00:23:35.58\00:23:38.88 but actually the women's health initiative showed that it 00:23:38.91\00:23:41.82 actually increase their risk of stroke and heart attack more. 00:23:41.85\00:23:45.32 Cause these female hormones if they are used exogenously, 00:23:45.35\00:23:48.82 meaning that we are swallowing them or we're using them as a 00:23:48.86\00:23:52.33 patch or something like that, for the typical American, 00:23:52.36\00:23:54.90 actually thickens their blood. 00:23:54.93\00:23:56.26 So they are even more likely to experience thrombosis 00:23:56.30\00:23:59.93 heart attack, stroke, even venous thrombosis and those 00:23:59.97\00:24:03.30 sorts of things and so doctors quit prescribing those drugs 00:24:03.34\00:24:06.41 or those hormones carte blanche. 00:24:06.44\00:24:09.68 But it's still a dangerous period non-the-less 00:24:09.71\00:24:13.25 and what did you particularly study? 00:24:13.28\00:24:16.58 So we are focusing on risk factors, we are focusing on 00:24:16.62\00:24:20.46 their weight, we are focusing on their cholesterol levels 00:24:20.49\00:24:24.36 and their bad cholesterol, their LDL. 00:24:24.39\00:24:27.06 What happens when they participate of the 00:24:27.10\00:24:30.57 Newstart program? Ok! 00:24:30.60\00:24:32.43 So they are coming to Newstart, their post-menopausal, 00:24:32.47\00:24:37.47 they have high cholesterol, they're overweight, 00:24:37.51\00:24:40.84 their bad cholesterol particularly is elevated, 00:24:40.88\00:24:44.55 and what happened here in 19 days? 00:24:44.58\00:24:47.85 So as a result of this intervention, 00:24:47.88\00:24:50.99 their weight came down, they lost an average of six pounds. 00:24:51.02\00:24:55.92 Now people say oh, that's not a lot, well what happened 00:24:55.96\00:24:59.09 is that the objective is to help the person lose weight 00:24:59.13\00:25:03.63 little by little and keep that weight off. 00:25:03.67\00:25:06.33 Those type of crash diets in which the people loses a lot of 00:25:06.37\00:25:10.87 weight, usually they have to yo-yo effect which actually 00:25:10.91\00:25:13.58 end up being worse in the long term. Exactly! 00:25:13.61\00:25:16.48 So this was a very healthy weight loss, about two pounds 00:25:16.51\00:25:19.38 a week for the three weeks, a little more than two pounds 00:25:19.41\00:25:22.52 if they lost six pounds. 00:25:22.55\00:25:23.89 And that actually is a very good healthy way to lose weight, 00:25:23.92\00:25:26.49 two pounds a week on a healthy plant based diet. 00:25:26.52\00:25:30.66 And what else did you find out? 00:25:30.69\00:25:32.73 So, we were also checking their cholesterol, 00:25:32.76\00:25:35.86 their cholesterol at the beginning of the program 00:25:35.90\00:25:38.27 was 222 on average and by the end of the Newstart intervention 00:25:38.30\00:25:45.81 they have come down to 195, which is a good progress. 00:25:45.84\00:25:50.25 As they continue home, eating the food that they learned 00:25:50.28\00:25:53.98 and applying those principles, that cholesterol will keep 00:25:54.02\00:25:57.05 coming down and down and down. 00:25:57.09\00:25:58.82 Yeah, the blood is actually drawn in about two weeks 00:25:58.85\00:26:01.42 afterwards so we know it would be even more in a three and 00:26:01.46\00:26:05.29 four week period but that's a dramatic drop. 00:26:05.33\00:26:07.86 So 222 or so and down to 195, plus they lost weight 00:26:07.90\00:26:14.64 and what happened to their bad cholesterol? 00:26:14.67\00:26:16.50 And also their bad cholesterol went down from 136 at the 00:26:16.54\00:26:21.41 beginning of the program to 117 by the end of the program. 00:26:22.34\00:26:27.18 Okay, well that's a dramatic difference, 00:26:27.22\00:26:28.95 we know that in LDL above 130 is a heart attack and a stroke 00:26:28.98\00:26:32.49 waiting to happen and to be really protected, 00:26:32.52\00:26:36.52 we want our LDL's down to less than 90 or even ideally 00:26:36.59\00:26:40.33 70 if we are trying if we are trying to reverse something 00:26:40.36\00:26:42.46 but they got down out of that dangerous range in just 19 days 00:26:42.50\00:26:47.44 and of course it was still dropping. 00:26:47.47\00:26:49.60 So if you have a family or yourself or beyond that 00:26:49.64\00:26:54.41 menopause time, this may be one of the best investments 00:26:54.44\00:26:59.55 you can do to come to the Newstart program to 00:26:59.58\00:27:01.85 improve those health risk factors. 00:27:01.88\00:27:04.69 Don't get on the hormones, come to Newstart 00:27:04.72\00:27:07.42 and you will do far better than hormones. 00:27:07.46\00:27:10.46 Thank you for tuning in to Weimar Institute Research. 00:27:10.49\00:27:15.90
