Hey friends, welcome to another edition of NEWSTART NOW. 00:01:11.60\00:01:16.07 I'm your host Damon Snead filling in for Ron Gianonni 00:01:16.10\00:01:19.34 and we have in our studio today guest Miss Daisy Vaughn. 00:01:19.37\00:01:24.25 But first, let's go to her life before Newstart. 00:01:24.28\00:01:28.75 I'm here as a companion for Beverly Hoffner, she's a friend 00:01:31.85\00:01:36.32 of mine from Youngfield and we live at a Retirement Center 00:01:36.36\00:01:44.73 there and she asked me to be her companion as she has a problem 00:01:44.77\00:01:50.94 but I also have some issues myself health wise. 00:01:50.97\00:01:56.18 The issues are my voice, it's very difficult sometime 00:01:56.21\00:02:01.62 to be understood and low energy, not knowing how to really relax. 00:02:01.65\00:02:12.29 I would like to feel good again, to be able to do a few more 00:02:12.33\00:02:18.00 things that I haven't been able to do recently 00:02:18.03\00:02:22.47 and that is to walk further than I have been for many years, 00:02:22.50\00:02:29.11 and just to be energized to work for the Lord. 00:02:29.14\00:02:35.22 Welcome back friends. 00:02:35.25\00:02:39.82 Miss Daisy, how are you doing? 00:02:39.85\00:02:43.12 Doing great. Doing great. 00:02:43.16\00:02:45.46 Well tell me, what's your experience been like here? 00:02:45.49\00:02:49.10 Was it a good experience for you? 00:02:49.13\00:02:51.80 Well, this has been a really great experience for me, 00:02:51.83\00:02:55.60 I really didn't expect for me to come but I was so thankful 00:02:55.64\00:03:00.78 to be invited, to be a companion for a lady that lives 00:03:00.81\00:03:05.48 in the same facility that I live, Beverly. 00:03:05.51\00:03:08.42 And she surprised me one day by asking me to come 00:03:08.45\00:03:12.29 and I said Praise the Lord, thank you. 00:03:12.32\00:03:15.46 We talked a little bit about Miss Beverly, 00:03:15.49\00:03:17.59 she was actually praying she said. Yes. 00:03:17.63\00:03:20.40 And all of a sudden she hears the name Weimar across the 00:03:20.43\00:03:23.03 room and so she knows that God wanted you here, 00:03:23.06\00:03:27.24 and we know that because you have been such a blessing 00:03:27.27\00:03:30.27 to this entire group. 00:03:30.31\00:03:31.71 You' all two have been like the grandmothers of the group 00:03:31.74\00:03:35.14 and we really really appreciate ya'all. 00:03:35.18\00:03:37.31 You've made a lot of friends too, a lot of people told me. 00:03:37.35\00:03:40.52 I have and it's been a wonderful experience 00:03:40.55\00:03:43.99 and we are hoping to continue it as we return to our home. 00:03:44.02\00:03:48.39 But the amazing part of this was the night before 00:03:48.42\00:03:53.03 Beverly called me, my daughter in Oregon had called me 00:03:53.06\00:03:57.57 and said, mom, I think we should try to go to Weimar together. 00:03:57.60\00:04:01.77 And I so oh, that would be just wonderful, 00:04:01.80\00:04:04.51 I always wanted to go. 00:04:04.54\00:04:06.44 And so she did check and said well, 00:04:06.47\00:04:09.08 we won't be able to make it this time 00:04:09.11\00:04:11.38 because of the expense. 00:04:11.41\00:04:12.91 But the very next morning Bev called me and asked me 00:04:12.95\00:04:17.25 to go with her and so I said God must want me to go there. 00:04:17.29\00:04:21.42 Yes ma'am. 00:04:21.46\00:04:22.79 Now how...now as far as exercise and things go, 00:04:22.82\00:04:27.50 how was that for you? I know there is a lot of challenging 00:04:27.53\00:04:29.76 courses and there can be hills and stuff, 00:04:29.80\00:04:31.97 how did you do with your exercise here? 00:04:32.00\00:04:33.80 Well, I didn't do as well as I should have, 00:04:33.84\00:04:36.57 I do enjoy walking at times but I was a little lazy today. 00:04:36.60\00:04:44.45 [Laughter] 00:04:44.48\00:04:46.78 I think everybody has a day or two of laziness but 00:04:46.82\00:04:49.52 the doctor's will get you, or your coaches 00:04:49.55\00:04:52.55 will surely get you. That's for sure. 00:04:52.59\00:04:54.69 But I did do some walking. 00:04:54.72\00:04:56.19 I did a lot of walking... in the halls is a long hall. 00:04:56.22\00:04:59.26 At the Weimar it's large and so a lot of times I just walked 00:04:59.29\00:05:06.43 inside, up and down the halls and I figured I was getting 00:05:06.47\00:05:10.41 a little exercise there. Yes ma'am. 00:05:10.44\00:05:12.21 But I hope to do better when I get home. 00:05:12.24\00:05:15.31 Now what kind of changes did you experience here in your 00:05:15.34\00:05:18.28 health or did you notice any- thing or any numbers that... 00:05:18.31\00:05:21.62 Well yes, I came I had a cough which I had been experiencing 00:05:21.65\00:05:27.16 for since November of last year and I've had... 00:05:27.19\00:05:32.93 The doctor treated me for Bronchitis 00:05:32.96\00:05:37.77 and that helped a lot. 00:05:37.80\00:05:39.90 And then I was given chest fomentation. Oh yes. 00:05:39.93\00:05:46.14 And that really helped, whereas, I am coughing very little now. 00:05:46.17\00:05:51.01 Now how did you like those fomentations? 00:05:51.05\00:05:53.05 Now did you do the...what kind of hydro did you do? 00:05:53.08\00:05:55.22 Was it the pads or... It was the pads. 00:05:55.25\00:05:57.75 Hot and then the ice cold. 00:05:57.79\00:06:00.59 I know, I could hear ya'all squealing sometimes 00:06:00.62\00:06:03.73 when I go by there when they put the cold on you. 00:06:03.76\00:06:05.83 But it helps tremendously doesn't it? It helps. 00:06:05.86\00:06:08.33 It helped a lot and I am not coughing nearly as much. 00:06:08.36\00:06:12.93 Right. Very good. 00:06:12.97\00:06:14.70 So any other changes in your health that you noticed? 00:06:14.74\00:06:19.24 Well, I'm enjoying the food. 00:06:19.27\00:06:23.65 Oh, let's begin the food now. 00:06:23.68\00:06:25.68 Now that's usually something we like to talk about. 00:06:25.71\00:06:28.75 So what was your favorite dish? 00:06:28.78\00:06:30.59 You know, I really enjoyed most of them but I enjoyed the... 00:06:30.62\00:06:35.42 there was a saucy red bean... Oh yeah, with the... 00:06:35.46\00:06:40.13 The polenta. That was just wonderful. 00:06:40.16\00:06:43.37 If my stomach could have held more, 00:06:43.40\00:06:45.47 I would have gone back for more. 00:06:45.50\00:06:47.27 Yeah, that's one of my favorites. 00:06:47.30\00:06:49.77 That was very good and I like the Tofu omelet. 00:06:49.80\00:06:53.48 Yeah! That was good. 00:06:53.51\00:06:55.21 Um hum. Well breakfast is my favorite meal. 00:06:55.24\00:06:58.61 And breakfast with the doctor, was that a good experience? 00:06:58.65\00:07:00.82 Oh, yes it was. That's the best usually. 00:07:00.85\00:07:02.85 That was really good. 00:07:02.88\00:07:04.35 Yeah, you usually can't beat that. 00:07:04.39\00:07:06.25 So tell me now, who's your doctor? 00:07:06.29\00:07:08.12 Dr. Gallant. How was your experience with Dr. G? 00:07:08.16\00:07:11.53 Oh I loved him. I wished he was in Napa. 00:07:11.56\00:07:15.23 Oh yeah, ya'all can't have him. 00:07:15.26\00:07:17.37 It was a very good experience with him. 00:07:17.40\00:07:20.97 Yeah, he's knowledgeable, he's a very spiritual man. 00:07:21.00\00:07:23.71 Yes he is. And I bet...I'm not sure 00:07:23.74\00:07:25.87 but I bet he prayed a little with you. 00:07:25.91\00:07:27.71 Oh, mercy yes. Twice, in the same time. 00:07:27.74\00:07:34.05 Um hum, it was really a good experience with him. 00:07:34.08\00:07:37.45 Right. So would you say the program met your expectations? 00:07:37.49\00:07:40.86 It most certainly did and I'd love to come again. 00:07:40.89\00:07:42.92 Right. So what would be a big take away from the health 00:07:42.96\00:07:46.19 point of view, the health side of this? 00:07:46.23\00:07:47.93 To follow the instructions that you've learned. 00:07:47.96\00:07:52.23 How to eat healthy and the exercise would be a 00:07:52.27\00:07:59.44 great benefit if you can implement it into your 00:07:59.47\00:08:03.11 everyday life. 00:08:03.14\00:08:04.48 Yes, it's very important. Very important. 00:08:04.51\00:08:07.12 We were talking to Peter earlier and when he came, 00:08:07.15\00:08:10.15 he could barely move and it hurt to get him going at first. 00:08:10.19\00:08:13.36 A lot of guests experience that they hurt, it's painful 00:08:13.39\00:08:16.06 they're not used to moving, but all of a sudden, they start 00:08:16.09\00:08:18.66 getting fluid and they are feeling better 00:08:18.69\00:08:20.76 and then the more exercise, the better it is for them. 00:08:20.80\00:08:24.13 It is better, the more you walk, the stronger you get. 00:08:24.17\00:08:27.64 So, I was just telling the doctor, I feel weak and tired. 00:08:27.67\00:08:30.54 He says if I get back to walking like I should, 00:08:30.57\00:08:34.11 I'll get stronger. 00:08:34.14\00:08:35.58 Now you had another experience here that was a surprise. 00:08:35.61\00:08:40.52 I mean, you're, I think you are the oldest person here 00:08:40.55\00:08:43.99 on our guests are 87. 00:08:44.02\00:08:45.72 Yes, I'll be 87 this month. 00:08:45.75\00:08:48.89 And now you were re-baptized this session, 00:08:48.92\00:08:50.86 Yes I will. Before I came I had made the decision 00:08:50.89\00:08:59.93 to re-dedicate my life but I kept putting it off 00:08:59.97\00:09:04.71 and then when I came and you made the invitation, 00:09:04.74\00:09:09.11 that made it just perfect for me to make the decision 00:09:09.14\00:09:14.65 and to go through with it. 00:09:14.68\00:09:16.22 And the Lord told me, He did it, you need to be re-dedicated 00:09:16.25\00:09:20.76 and so that's what I did and I felt very happy, 00:09:20.79\00:09:25.46 very... I can't explain it. 00:09:25.49\00:09:29.60 Well that's why we bring the spiritual and the health 00:09:29.63\00:09:34.00 together here is because we know that yes, we want to make 00:09:34.04\00:09:37.44 sure you understand your relationship with Christ 00:09:37.47\00:09:39.77 and the solid foundation you must be standing on. 00:09:39.81\00:09:42.94 But in a secondary way, those same principles that you learn 00:09:42.98\00:09:46.95 spiritually are going to be the tools that help you to keep 00:09:46.98\00:09:50.85 this health thing going because it is difficult 00:09:50.89\00:09:53.15 when you go home. Oh, it will be, I know it will be. 00:09:53.19\00:09:56.09 And so you need that confidence that help that we talked about 00:09:56.12\00:10:00.70 dying to self, die to the old ways and we want a newness 00:10:00.73\00:10:04.53 and we need the spirit to battle between the spirit 00:10:04.57\00:10:07.34 and the flesh, we need that spirit to be whispering 00:10:07.37\00:10:10.11 in our ears. Well, the way you presented it was just 00:10:10.14\00:10:15.48 a wonderful experience for me. 00:10:15.51\00:10:17.31 I mean, you know when you read about these things, 00:10:17.35\00:10:20.48 but the way you went into depth, that is what got me. 00:10:20.52\00:10:25.32 Yeah, I got to admit that it was a bit of surprise. 00:10:25.35\00:10:28.82 You know, we have a lot of elderly people come through 00:10:28.86\00:10:32.53 the program but... Well, I had...It's been over 00:10:32.56\00:10:35.20 50 years from when I was baptized. 00:10:35.23\00:10:36.97 Yeah, a lot of life has happened in 50 years. 00:10:37.00\00:10:40.60 Yes ma'am. 00:10:40.64\00:10:42.27 So now going back home, what's got to be something that 00:10:42.30\00:10:46.54 you really are looking forward to implementing that you learned 00:10:46.57\00:10:50.75 here from your doctors and your nutritionists? 00:10:50.78\00:10:54.28 Well for one thing, to be more careful in making choices 00:10:54.32\00:10:58.29 in what I eat and to be more persistent in my exercising, 00:10:58.32\00:11:04.33 especially digestive exercise right after eating. 00:11:04.36\00:11:07.76 You know. Yeah. Getting that walk in. 00:11:07.80\00:11:10.60 So you learned a lot from Miss. Eileen our dietician? 00:11:10.63\00:11:12.97 I did. Was she good? Yes she is. 00:11:13.00\00:11:15.50 Yeah she know what she is talking about. 00:11:15.54\00:11:16.91 She does. 00:11:16.94\00:11:18.27 She goes around and she helps you to learn the por... 00:11:18.31\00:11:20.91 and that's big, the portions isn't it. 00:11:20.94\00:11:22.38 You don't really think about those portions. 00:11:22.41\00:11:24.21 Well I know you don't cause in the dining room 00:11:24.25\00:11:28.28 I was used to the lady that was serving us, 00:11:28.32\00:11:31.19 but then when I got to serving it myself, I began to make 00:11:31.22\00:11:35.32 a little bit more extra scoops. 00:11:35.36\00:11:37.83 Right, right. 00:11:37.86\00:11:39.89 Yeah, Miss Helena is good helping us and so it's a great 00:11:39.93\00:11:43.97 team here and I'm glad that you've had a great experience 00:11:44.00\00:11:47.54 and I am glad that you were here, that we got to meet you 00:11:47.57\00:11:49.70 and that you can go home and maybe inspire other people 00:11:49.74\00:11:53.38 from that community to come out and visit us and be a part.. 00:11:53.41\00:11:56.58 Well Miss Daisy unfortunately we are out of time, 00:11:56.61\00:11:59.88 it's been a real blessing to be a part of your life. 00:11:59.91\00:12:03.08 Thank you so much and God bless. 00:12:03.12\00:12:04.45 I'm lookin forward to getting that CD from you. Yes ma'am. 00:12:04.49\00:12:08.29 Don't go away friends, we will be right back with Dr. Gallant. 00:12:08.32\00:12:13.19 Welcome back friends, we have with us today Dr. Gallant. 00:12:48.16\00:12:51.83 Dr. Gallant. Good to see you. How are you doing? 00:12:51.87\00:12:54.17 Very well, thank you. 00:12:54.20\00:12:55.54 So we are going to talk a little bit about Miss Daisy. 00:12:55.57\00:12:58.57 Yes. Um, 87 years old... Doesn't look like it by the way. 00:12:58.61\00:13:02.98 No she doesn't. She gets around really well, she was like a 00:13:03.01\00:13:06.72 grandma out here. We all looked at her like a grandma. 00:13:06.75\00:13:09.85 she was very quiet at first when they came, very active, 00:13:09.88\00:13:13.22 very gregarious, everyone loved her... 00:13:13.25\00:13:15.19 But she had some health issues earlier in life 00:13:15.22\00:13:19.53 and you would think someone at 87 would be like well, 00:13:19.56\00:13:23.70 my life is nearing its end, why come to Newstart at 87 00:13:23.73\00:13:28.04 years old? 00:13:28.07\00:13:29.40 Yeah, you know, she doesn't look at life that way, 00:13:29.44\00:13:32.44 she looks that she still has some life to live 00:13:32.47\00:13:36.01 and she had a friend who was coming and she said 00:13:36.04\00:13:38.91 I should go too and so she came and it's been a blessing. 00:13:38.95\00:13:42.75 You know, Daisy had a history of tuberculosis and that impacts 00:13:42.78\00:13:50.33 your life. But then she also had cancer and she survived 00:13:50.36\00:13:58.33 lung cancer. They actually took out a lobe of her lung 00:13:58.37\00:14:02.04 and she's done well since then so praise the Lord for that. 00:14:02.07\00:14:06.34 So how do you see someone that's come through a disease 00:14:06.37\00:14:11.35 like that, but a place like this being a preventive measure? 00:14:11.38\00:14:15.45 Well, you know cancer is one of those diseases that is truly a 00:14:15.48\00:14:19.79 lifestyle disease. 00:14:19.82\00:14:21.16 The way we live, the choices we make, what we eat and drink, 00:14:21.19\00:14:24.99 what we breathe and what we expose our bodies to 00:14:25.03\00:14:29.76 impacts our risk of cancer significantly 00:14:29.80\00:14:34.94 and if our immune system is not in optimal shape, 00:14:34.97\00:14:38.44 then we are at greater risk of getting cancer. 00:14:38.47\00:14:41.41 Our immune system is what protects us. 00:14:41.44\00:14:43.35 You know we all...like you go and get a sunburn for example, 00:14:43.38\00:14:46.48 we all can develop a cancerous cell, a cell that changes. 00:14:46.51\00:14:51.35 But our immune system, typically if it's in optimal health 00:14:51.39\00:14:55.56 can take care of that. 00:14:55.59\00:14:56.93 It's when our immune system is not functioning optimally 00:14:56.96\00:15:00.10 or we are shifting the balance towards making it easier 00:15:00.13\00:15:04.77 for cancer to grow that we start to develop things like cancer. 00:15:04.80\00:15:08.67 And so being in a program like this, where you're learning 00:15:08.70\00:15:13.51 to be balanced, you're learning to have good nutrition 00:15:13.54\00:15:17.81 that will support your normal cells and will not give 00:15:17.85\00:15:22.38 what cancer cells need to grow. 00:15:22.42\00:15:24.02 When you're getting exercise, when you are improving your 00:15:24.05\00:15:27.99 circulation so you can get your immune system to every part 00:15:28.02\00:15:31.89 of your body to fight off any- thing that could be a problem. 00:15:31.93\00:15:35.33 When you are on a plant based diet, a plant based diet is 00:15:35.36\00:15:40.87 crucial for fighting cancer because animal protein 00:15:40.90\00:15:45.21 shifts our balance towards being more acidic which makes us 00:15:45.24\00:15:49.74 more prone to cancer and animal protein actually can 00:15:49.78\00:15:52.85 impact how well our immune system is fighting off cancer. 00:15:52.88\00:15:57.79 So even if you are young, in perfect health, 00:15:57.82\00:16:02.26 you need to stay that way. 00:16:02.29\00:16:05.16 Yeah! 00:16:05.19\00:16:06.53 Cause things can change overnight. 00:16:06.56\00:16:07.90 Absolutely. 00:16:07.93\00:16:09.26 And one of the best ways to stay that way is to 00:16:09.30\00:16:11.47 change your lifestyle, to do things differently. 00:16:11.50\00:16:14.30 So an 87 year old woman who is in now, in good health 00:16:14.34\00:16:19.87 somewhat, she can benefit, she could easily live another years. 00:16:19.91\00:16:24.48 By the grace of God, absolutely, absolutely. 00:16:24.51\00:16:27.45 So, yeah, I was excited to see her improve, 00:16:27.48\00:16:32.35 I was excited to see that she kind of felt sick 00:16:32.39\00:16:37.59 for a little while but is feeling better now 00:16:37.63\00:16:39.73 and I just praise God that she was able to come 00:16:39.76\00:16:44.17 and for her as well, the spiritual component of health 00:16:44.20\00:16:50.31 plays an integral role in how she's doing today. 00:16:50.34\00:16:53.58 Well yeah, she was a surprise to me, she was actually 00:16:53.61\00:16:57.18 the first one that came and said pastor, 00:16:57.21\00:16:58.88 I want to be re-baptized. Praise the Lord. 00:16:58.91\00:17:02.32 And so you see, it's always this way of rejuvenation and 00:17:02.35\00:17:06.35 health and a rejuvenation of the spiritual, 00:17:06.39\00:17:09.62 she's leaving here with this really great attitude 00:17:09.66\00:17:12.66 and she's got a whole... who knows how much life she 00:17:12.69\00:17:16.26 has ahead of her. 00:17:16.30\00:17:17.63 But she's benefited...she's taken it serious and it's 00:17:17.67\00:17:20.44 interesting, a lot of people that you see at her age 00:17:20.47\00:17:22.60 just seem to kind of give up, but she's not, she's coming here 00:17:22.64\00:17:26.34 to a place and she's getting a re-boot and she's got no 00:17:26.37\00:17:29.08 intention on slowing down. 00:17:29.11\00:17:30.45 Right, right. And I just encourage her to continue doing 00:17:30.48\00:17:33.88 these things that we have started, 00:17:33.92\00:17:35.28 these habits that we've made here. 00:17:35.32\00:17:37.12 I encourage her to continue those at home because 00:17:37.15\00:17:39.79 that is going to be important for her to be healthy and 00:17:39.82\00:17:44.63 to be able to share. 00:17:44.66\00:17:47.00 Because I think that's going to be an integral part of her 00:17:47.03\00:17:50.13 health continuing, is taking what she has learned 00:17:50.17\00:17:53.67 and what she has re-learned and sharing that with others. 00:17:53.70\00:17:56.84 When people see the change in her life, 00:17:56.87\00:17:58.94 they're going to know that something has happened 00:17:58.97\00:18:01.64 by the grace of God. 00:18:01.68\00:18:03.01 Yeah because she's going back to a retirement community. 00:18:03.04\00:18:05.11 That's right. And she's got a lot of friends 00:18:05.15\00:18:07.78 and they're going to see something different. 00:18:07.82\00:18:10.79 Yes. She's going to be able to share and inspire 00:18:10.82\00:18:14.09 other people to take a similar route. Absolutely, absolutely. 00:18:14.12\00:18:20.13 So as far as someone her age, what would you say is a big 00:18:20.16\00:18:26.27 challenge she will face though going back home? 00:18:26.30\00:18:29.70 Well I think because she lives in a structured environment 00:18:29.74\00:18:36.14 she's going to have to be a little more creative to continue 00:18:36.18\00:18:40.98 eating a plant based diet be- cause food is prepared for her. 00:18:41.02\00:18:45.45 Oh, that's right. That's right. So she's going to have to 00:18:45.49\00:18:47.92 sort of look at ways to make sure that she's getting 00:18:47.96\00:18:51.89 what she needs. 00:18:51.93\00:18:53.26 She is going to have I think a little more of a challenge 00:18:53.29\00:18:56.56 with trying to get her regular exercise maybe. 00:18:56.60\00:19:05.61 But I think she...We've talked about some of this, 00:19:05.64\00:19:09.21 I think she's got good plans of ways to make these principles 00:19:09.24\00:19:14.22 work in the environment in which she is in. 00:19:14.25\00:19:16.62 Yeah and I think that is going to be key for her and Ms. 00:19:16.65\00:19:21.26 Beverly as well. Yeah. The friend that she came up here 00:19:21.29\00:19:24.39 with is... I think a lot of people face that going home, 00:19:24.43\00:19:28.50 you've got to.. They are all telling me this too... The exit 00:19:28.53\00:19:32.70 surveys, they're we got to go home, we got to do what we've 00:19:32.73\00:19:36.14 learned here. If we want to stay healthy, if we want to continue 00:19:36.17\00:19:39.17 to do what's right. I think that this lady's got a... 00:19:39.21\00:19:47.25 I think she's got a great future ahead of her as far as 00:19:47.28\00:19:49.98 her health, her life, her vitality. Yes. 00:19:50.02\00:19:52.19 If she just keeps doing the things that she is doing. 00:19:52.22\00:19:54.42 So what do you think about some of these issues that 00:19:54.46\00:20:02.43 elderly people get in... Something that even with 00:20:02.46\00:20:05.27 my own mother, she's only 70, she's nowhere near that age 00:20:05.30\00:20:08.47 but she's been diagnosed with bones crumbling so... 00:20:08.50\00:20:13.68 I noticed Ms. Daisy, she was a little concerned about falling.. 00:20:13.71\00:20:17.08 Sure. Sure. So what is the cause of that with elderly people? 00:20:17.11\00:20:21.32 Is it just being old or? 00:20:21.35\00:20:22.72 Well as we age, our bodies change. I think we can prevent 00:20:22.75\00:20:26.49 some of these things that are considered the normal things 00:20:26.52\00:20:31.16 that everybody should expect as they get old. 00:20:31.19\00:20:33.16 Simple things to help your bones for example is you want 00:20:33.19\00:20:38.83 to make sure you are getting good calcium in your diet. 00:20:38.87\00:20:41.70 I say in your diet, not in your supplement because our body 00:20:41.74\00:20:45.61 uses calcium in our diet a lot better than it does if we get it 00:20:45.64\00:20:48.88 from a supplement. 00:20:48.91\00:20:50.25 So you get calcium in your diet from green leafy vegetables, 00:20:50.28\00:20:53.72 you also get some calcium from almonds, but one of the 00:20:53.75\00:20:57.65 key things is Sesame Seeds. 00:20:57.69\00:20:59.42 Now Sesame Seeds are so small we don't break them open 00:20:59.45\00:21:02.52 very well just by chewing them. 00:21:02.56\00:21:03.93 So I recommend you grind them up is like a coffee grinder 00:21:03.96\00:21:06.80 or something like that and sprinkle that on your food 00:21:06.83\00:21:09.56 and then you want to have a little bit of weight bearing 00:21:09.60\00:21:11.87 exercise. So if you have a back pack, 00:21:11.90\00:21:15.44 you can put a couple cans of beans or something in there 00:21:15.47\00:21:17.61 and walk with that, it's weight bearing on your core 00:21:17.64\00:21:20.61 and that helps to strengthen your body. Just a simple thing 00:21:20.64\00:21:23.81 you can do to help prevent some of these things like 00:21:23.85\00:21:26.65 osteoporosis and osteopenia. 00:21:26.68\00:21:28.78 Very good. Well Dr. Gallant, we are out of time 00:21:28.82\00:21:30.79 but thank you so much friend once again. 00:21:30.82\00:21:32.92 Thank you Pr. Snead, good to see you. 00:21:32.95\00:21:34.92 Don't go away, we'll be right back. 00:21:34.96\00:21:37.69 Every year in America there are over 1 million deaths 00:21:41.23\00:21:44.23 because of Type 2 Diabetes and Chronic Obesity. 00:21:44.27\00:21:46.84 This includes heart attacks and strokes. 00:21:46.87\00:21:49.17 That's six and a half 747's crushing every day. 00:21:49.20\00:21:52.57 What's even more surprising is the fix is easy. 00:21:52.61\00:21:56.18 It's your lifestyle. Wouldn't it be nice if you could 00:21:56.21\00:21:59.48 actually add quality years to your life rather than dying 00:21:59.51\00:22:02.08 one organ at a time? 00:22:02.12\00:22:03.52 Obesity and diabetes are the cause of over a million deaths 00:22:03.55\00:22:07.09 per year. Most diseases are reversible 00:22:07.12\00:22:10.13 because most diseases are lifestyle diseases, especially 00:22:10.16\00:22:14.00 Type 2 Diabetes and Chronic Obesity. 00:22:14.03\00:22:16.26 Seriously now, they can be reversed and the quality 00:22:16.30\00:22:19.80 of your life can be renewed. 00:22:19.83\00:22:22.10 You will see dramatic changes in the first few days of our 00:22:29.01\00:22:31.81 program and you will be on the road to a better more robust 00:22:31.85\00:22:35.02 quality of life. 00:22:35.05\00:22:36.38 Welcome to Weimar Institute Research. 00:22:41.42\00:22:44.89 Today we have a study that was actually designed and 00:22:44.93\00:22:49.66 carried out by Dr. Ramirez himself, 00:22:49.70\00:22:52.60 the director of Weimar Institute Research and also 00:22:52.63\00:22:57.04 very involved in the Weimar College and teaching research. 00:22:57.07\00:23:00.71 Dr. Ramirez, a lot of the studies you are analyzing data 00:23:00.74\00:23:05.41 from multiple countries, but this is actually a group that 00:23:05.45\00:23:10.99 you yourself were involved in. 00:23:11.02\00:23:13.22 Tell us a little bit about this group. 00:23:13.25\00:23:14.79 That's right. As soon as we are able to get a hold of 00:23:14.82\00:23:17.33 this data and help publish this paper, the focus of this 00:23:17.36\00:23:22.73 study was what happens when you get the Newstart principles 00:23:22.76\00:23:26.27 and you teach them in a community setting? 00:23:26.30\00:23:29.17 Okay. Now Newstart is well known to have its 00:23:29.20\00:23:32.61 Residential Lifestyle Program and we have published a lot 00:23:32.64\00:23:36.08 in regards to the improvement in lipids and many other 00:23:36.11\00:23:39.38 health parameters by spending 19 days with us here at 00:23:39.41\00:23:43.55 Newstart. But this is taking a look at intensive community 00:23:43.59\00:23:48.12 program where they are not having to live here. 00:23:48.16\00:23:50.69 That's right. So did you feed them like we do here 00:23:50.73\00:23:53.40 in Newstart? Nope, not necessarily, 00:23:53.43\00:23:55.20 I just went, this was a Sunday Church, a non-denominational 00:23:55.23\00:23:57.70 church. The pastor invited me to go to his church... 00:23:57.73\00:24:00.37 There were many health issues in that church and he said 00:24:00.40\00:24:03.34 could you help us improve our health? 00:24:03.37\00:24:05.34 So the pastor himself as a result of this program 00:24:05.37\00:24:09.41 became a full plant based person and the participants 00:24:09.44\00:24:15.32 of this study were enthusiastic, it was a senior population, 00:24:15.35\00:24:19.75 most of them. I remember one of them, 00:24:19.79\00:24:22.79 he came and talked to me and said look, 00:24:22.82\00:24:25.33 my wife brought me to this two week program... 00:24:25.36\00:24:27.73 Forget it, I am not going to change my diet. 00:24:27.76\00:24:30.20 At the end of the two weeks he came to apologize. 00:24:30.23\00:24:33.00 I'm sorry that I told you that, we decided to switch our diet 00:24:33.03\00:24:36.97 to a vegan diet, we went to the shelter and gave away 00:24:37.01\00:24:39.31 all of our fridge food and we are going to start a new... 00:24:39.34\00:24:41.74 with the new diet. So it created a long term change. 00:24:41.78\00:24:45.65 Wow! Amazing! So someone who was very resistant to change 00:24:45.68\00:24:49.55 as a result of true education... actually totally change 00:24:49.58\00:24:54.16 what they were putting into their mouths in ways that they 00:24:54.19\00:24:57.19 thought that they never would. 00:24:57.23\00:24:58.56 The reason why they were so enthusiastic is that a the 00:24:58.59\00:25:03.67 beginning of the program we took blood samples 00:25:03.70\00:25:06.23 and their cholesterol was way above what should be normal. 00:25:06.27\00:25:10.74 It had a 234 points that cholesterol, the guideline says 00:25:10.77\00:25:17.31 200 but the ideal should be 150 but still that's way above 00:25:17.35\00:25:22.62 those two guidelines. 00:25:22.65\00:25:23.99 It's interesting, years ago I remember Dr. Scharffenberg 00:25:24.02\00:25:28.22 talking to a group of pastors who asked him a question. 00:25:28.26\00:25:31.36 How can we get people more interested in issues of 00:25:31.39\00:25:35.33 salvation? He says, I will tell you take their blood, 00:25:35.36\00:25:38.67 find out what their cholesterol is, give them the result 00:25:38.70\00:25:42.34 and they will cry out, what must I do to be saved? 00:25:42.37\00:25:45.47 That's exactly what happened. 00:25:45.51\00:25:48.81 They cried out, what must I do to be saved? 00:25:48.84\00:25:51.18 And were you able to save them? 00:25:51.21\00:25:53.11 Well, even their LDL, very worrisome 147... 00:25:53.15\00:25:57.79 That's very high. LDL very high. 00:25:57.82\00:26:00.52 Some of them taking statins, even with statins they had 00:26:00.56\00:26:03.56 this type of high levels of cholesterol and fat cholesterol. 00:26:03.59\00:26:07.43 After those two week change, I spoke to them three times 00:26:07.46\00:26:13.70 before the next blood sample and by the end of that two weeks 00:26:13.74\00:26:19.11 their cholesterol had gone down to 177, so it went down beyond 00:26:19.14\00:26:27.25 that 200 and their bad cholesterol, the LDL cholesterol 00:26:27.28\00:26:31.12 went down to 122. 00:26:31.15\00:26:34.72 So those are dramatic differences from 224 to 177 00:26:34.76\00:26:40.03 in just two weeks with an educational program 00:26:40.06\00:26:43.50 and their LDL's plummeting from a very high 147 00:26:43.53\00:26:48.57 where that's stroke, heart attack rate down to 122 00:26:48.60\00:26:52.27 in just two weeks and who knows what it would have been 00:26:52.31\00:26:54.34 at six weeks I had you measure it. 00:26:54.38\00:26:56.75 As a result of this, actually this had a community wide 00:26:56.78\00:27:01.12 implication. I went and talked to the businessmen and told them 00:27:01.15\00:27:04.29 I need for you to bring healthy food because it was not 00:27:04.32\00:27:06.45 to many options. He didn't believe me, 00:27:06.49\00:27:08.29 he brought two or three things- bam, people bought these things, 00:27:08.32\00:27:11.59 people got upset with him... 00:27:11.63\00:27:13.06 Hey the doctor said you are going to have these things, 00:27:13.09\00:27:14.93 He now knew that this was serious so he starts stocking 00:27:14.96\00:27:18.47 up his store with healthy products so that people could 00:27:18.50\00:27:21.70 continue with this healthy lifestyle long term. 00:27:21.74\00:27:24.81 It's consumerism that drives the commercial aspect, 00:27:24.84\00:27:28.51 not the other way around. And so they learned that. 00:27:28.54\00:27:32.15 Now our students at Weimar Institute actually took a look 00:27:32.18\00:27:35.98 at the results and compiled them along with yourself 00:27:36.02\00:27:39.42 and was this published then? Yes, this was actually published 00:27:39.45\00:27:42.96 in an American Heart Association Journal called 00:27:42.99\00:27:46.59 Atherosclerosis, Thrombosis and Vascular Biology Journal. 00:27:46.63\00:27:50.23 Wow! Amazing the difference with just health education 00:27:50.27\00:27:55.07 provided by Dr. Eddie Ramirez Director of Research 00:27:55.10\00:27:59.97 at Weimar Institute. 00:28:00.01\00:28:01.44 Thank you for joining us at Weimar Institute Research. 00:28:01.48\00:28:06.05
