01:11 Hey friends, welcome to another edition of NEWSTART Now. 01:13 I'm your host Damon Snead. I'm filling in for Ron Giannoni. 01:18 We have in our studio today Telecia Cooke. Let's take a look 01:23 at her life before she came to NEWSTART. 01:28 There are lots of reasons why I came to Weimar. Number one, 01:34 I spent the past 24 years home schooling my children and I see 01:39 myself as a caregiver. I've taken care of my children and 01:44 elderly people because we own an assisted living facility for 01:48 elderly and I enjoy taking care of people. But now I need to 01:52 take care of myself. Coming away from my everyday schedule and 01:58 seeing God's handiwork, stopping to smell the roses, it's a 02:05 beautiful thing. Before I leave here I'd like to have a renewal, 02:10 a spiritual renewal, a health renewal, emotional renewal. 02:18 Just learning how to love myself and take care of myself again 02:22 like I take care of others. 02:28 Hey friends, welcome back. Telesia welcome. 02:31 Thank you. 02:33 How are you doing? 02:34 I'm doing great. 02:36 So tell me about your experience here a little bit. When you came 02:40 here what you thought. How have things progressed for you? 02:44 Well when I came here I didn't know totally everything I was 02:49 going to get but I knew I wanted to come here. I wanted to lose 02:53 some weight. I knew I was going to learn something, didn't know 02:57 exactly what, but I got much more. 03:01 So what was the big surprise for you in this program? Maybe 03:05 something you didn't expect that happened? 03:09 What I did expect is finding Jesus in a personal way. 03:14 I didn't expect that. I knew I was going to eat some good food, 03:21 some different recipes I would learn but I realized that the 03:26 NEWSTART program was more about my relationship with God and 03:31 that the food part was just an extension of that. 03:36 It's interesting. We have a lot of people who have that same 03:40 testimony. They come here with health issues, problems going on 03:44 in their life and they're looking through a solution 03:45 through health, but then they'll come away saying, man I realized 03:49 that it was my life with Christ. There was something that was 03:52 missing there, something I knew was deeper with and then the 03:55 health was always a bonus. And Steve Romel tells all you that 04:00 on that first Sunday night that we here believe in prayer, we're 04:04 a team that believes in the power of God to aid in this 04:08 healing process and so you got that from the beginning. 04:13 From the beginning. You know you talked about the will of 04:19 faith and you took a lot from Steps to Christ and I've always 04:24 had the book Steps to Christ but to understand it in a way 04:28 that you presented it just opened my mind to a whole new 04:33 level of coming to Christ and literally the steps to get to 04:39 Him which I didn't understand that fully until really I heard 04:44 the message in the way you presented it. I think from each 04:49 person that works here to the participants, God was showing 04:53 me something. He was showing me another step. It's just really 04:57 amazing. The words Steps to Christ took on a whole new 05:01 language from every step. The moto here is walk, walk, walk 05:04 and literally with each step walking with a different person 05:08 each day the Lord was showing me a different step going towards 05:12 Him. 05:13 Now it's interesting that you say that the walk, walk, walk, 05:16 I like how you tie that with walking with God. But how was 05:19 exercise for you here? Did that get better? Did you get in 05:22 better shape or how did that work out? 05:24 I think I got in better shape because I had a car accident at 05:30 end of 2016 and I was not mobile for the past two years. I have 05:36 not exercised at all. So I came here broken. I came here 05:41 thinking that I couldn't really move much. I was hoping to get 05:45 better but I didn't realize how not moving actually kept me in 05:50 a stage of pain. It kept me stiff, it kept me immobile and 05:57 just by taking a step and more steps each day, it led me to a 06:02 new place both spiritually and physically and emotionally. 06:07 You see how you do that. You keep tying that spiritual to the 06:11 health side, OK, so the exercise is difficult at first 06:15 it's painful. Yeah. Yeah but you started progressing and doing 06:18 well and all along spiritually you're taking kind of that same 06:21 journey. 06:23 That's the part that's crazy to me is that it all tied in. 06:27 Even my walk this morning with one of the participants I was 06:32 just wow, we're making steps, we're taking one step closer 06:37 to the mountaintop. We're just taking one step closer to Christ 06:41 and even though it's like OK Steps to Christ, I'm really 06:45 taking steps closer to Christ and one step closer to health 06:49 and one step closer to, just to him overall. 06:52 So the health is moving along with the spirituality. 06:56 Now you know talking about another part of the program, how 06:58 was the food here? 06:59 The food was delicious and I enjoy good quality food and 07:05 I was surprised how flavorful. It was wonderful. The cooking 07:12 classes were great, the flavors and not having oil and not 07:18 having refined sugars and it all came together beautifully. 07:22 You can't imagine how food is ever going to taste good. When 07:27 you first get here you're like this is going to be a terrible 07:31 experience but I'm in it. When people leave, and this has been 07:35 most of the testimonies, they cannot believe the food ended up 07:40 being that good food. 07:41 It was delicious and anyone that knows me knows I 07:45 like good quality food well seasoned and it was very good 07:50 and I was able to lose weight and I just feel good. I feel 07:55 great. My pain level has diminished and I feel good. 08:01 So not tell me about your doctor your experience with your doctor 08:04 Who was your doctor again? 08:06 Dr. Gallant. 08:07 Dr. Gallant. Dr. G. How was your experience with Dr. G? 08:09 Very well. He's very professional and very 08:14 knowledgeable and he was very helpful, very helpful. 08:19 Very caring. 08:20 He's in tune with his patients. 08:21 He's passionate about this whole NEWSTART program. He believes 08:27 it. I appreciate that he began each session with prayer. 08:30 He gets on his knees and he puts himself before the Father in a 08:35 humble way and that his message is coming from God. So I really 08:40 appreciate that. He made the focus that's not just about, you 08:46 know, we or this. It's really the whole package. I think everyone 08:52 that works here that was the emphasis from the hydrotherapy 08:56 she prayed and had devotional with me and she infused my name 09:01 in the devotional text and I really appreciated that. It was 09:05 very personalized. And so I just thought that was great. Even the 09:10 medical center, the people that take your lab work, they prayed 09:15 with me, at the clinic. I mean where does that happen in our 09:19 traditional health care system. But they have the lab technician 09:24 hold your hand and pray with you after he draws your blood. 09:28 So where am I? 09:30 You don't feel like a stranger in some of these clinics where 09:35 you're just a diagnosis waiting to happen. You feel like a 09:38 brother or a sister to these people and they're trying to 09:41 help you through the power of God enlightening their minds 09:45 to your condition. 09:46 Yeah completely. You walk through those doors and even 09:50 though they're not seeing you personally they look at you in 09:53 the eyes and they say hello. Yeah. That's very special. And 09:57 it's very... you can tell that the Holy Spirit is here. 10:00 So now what is a big takeaway, a big ah-ha moment, something 10:05 that you're going to remember the most, the biggest impact? 10:09 It can be the spiritual or the spiritual and the health side. 10:14 Give us one on each. 10:15 OK, I'll start with the health. I understand that even a little 10:22 bit can ruin the whole batch. You know, like one rotten apple 10:27 could ruin the whole batch of apples. I just feel like you 10:31 know we make excuses just to have a little bit of this and a 10:35 little bit of that and it makes a big difference. So I think you 10:41 mentioned in one of your morning devotions. Be careful of doing 10:47 that. You know it's OK to take a little bit of this and a 10:50 a little bit of that and our relationship with God's the same 10:53 way. We're not going to go back. We're going to go forward on 10:56 that wheel of faith and we're going to do it every day. We're 11:01 going to die to self every day. So beside the food I learned 11:06 was portion size and the quality of food, whole food 11:10 eaten whole. The spiritual component was key. The wheel 11:15 of faith knowing that God is love, knowing that we have to 11:20 have a sinners need, I have to realize my need for Christ and 11:26 I have to get to that point of repentance and just it was a 11:31 great diagram. It was a great way to think about the process 11:34 and knowing that I have to do this daily, I have to die to 11:38 self-daily and if I start with that, that's going to help me 11:42 control other things in my life. 11:44 Yes ma'am. And that's why he's is going to help you control 11:47 everything. Well Telecia, we are out of time but we thank you so 11:50 very much. May God bless. 11:52 Thank you so much. 11:53 Friends don't go away, we'll be right back with Dr. Gallant. 12:01 ¤ ¤ 12:32 Welcome back friends. We have today with us Dr. Gallant. 12:35 Dr. Gallant, welcome. 12:37 Thank you, good to see you Pastor Snead. 12:39 Today we're going to be talking about a young lady, Ms. Telecia, 12:44 that has been in pretty good health, a young lady, and then 12:49 had a tragic accident and it went downhill from there. 12:54 What can you tell us about her? 12:55 She has sustained a back injury in this car accident and she had 12:59 been healthy exercising. She showed me some pictures from 13:05 before and she really had been working out and doing a lot of 13:10 things and because of her back injury she was limited in what 13:15 she could do; limited in her exercise, limited in her sleep, 13:20 and just having a lot of pain and I think, as we've talked 13:25 about before, she found comfort, comfort in food and she says she 13:31 gained over 100 pounds. 13:32 Whew, that's a lot of weight! 13:34 That's a lot of weight. So that's really hard on your body 13:38 and that produces a lot of health challenges. She was 13:41 having a lot of back pain, also having hip pain and so that 13:46 limited her exercise. A couple months back her husband came 13:50 to the program and he said he really wanted to send her up 13:55 here. And I think that's so important. I think it's 13:57 important for couples to be united, to be on the same page, 14:03 especially when it comes to lifestyle and health. So I'm 14:09 glad that she was able to come and she has seen that this is a 14:13 life changer. 14:14 We've had a lot of couples here where they didn't have that 14:17 support at home and going back home was always difficult. 14:21 Yes. Without the support. Now something you talked about. 14:26 Weight gain on the body. You know if you take just something 14:30 as small as a 10-pound dumbbell and walk around with that for a 14:35 few hours you feel the weight on your body much less a 14:40 50-pound on each side, a hundred pounds. So how does weight, even 14:43 on a young person, how can that affect the bones, the joints? 14:47 Well you know excess weight creates stress on your joints 14:52 and that makes them wear out quicker you know. So when you're 14:57 carrying excess weight like that it's hard on your body, it's hard 15:02 on your joints. She has back pain and excess weight makes 15:06 the back pain worse. It exacerbates it so it makes it 15:10 harder for it to get better and she didn't feel like exercising 15:15 and she didn't have a lot of energy. She was sick and hurting 15:19 and frustrated with all these things that had happened 15:22 because her health prior to that has been very good. 15:24 Yeah and they don't want to get up, they don't want to move and 15:28 then it gets worse and we've seen that where some can get so 15:31 bad, so immobile then they can't and it really gets out 15:36 It's hard, it's really hard. And what I tell people is when these 15:38 happen is you really have to just start where you are and 15:42 just do a little bit. Tell you a quick story. There was a man 15:46 who lived on a half-mile drive way in the country and he was 15:49 having chest pain. His mail box was at the road and the house 15:53 was a half-mile in. And he made up his mind that he was going 15:56 walk and walk a little bit more every day. So he'd walk 15:59 towards the mail box until he started to get pain. Then he 16:03 would make a line in the gravel with his foot, rest and walk 16:07 back home. The next day his goal was to go past that line and 16:11 make a new line and when he did that within a month he could 16:15 walk to the mail box, rest and walk back home. Within two 16:19 months he could walk to the mailbox and back without having 16:23 to stop. And that's what people need to do. If you are in this 16:27 circumstance where you've had an injury or you've just let things 16:31 go and suddenly you find yourself in a position where 16:33 you're overweight, you're sick, you have health challenges, if 16:37 you can just start some lifestyle changes and just 16:39 slowly start and gradually increase a little bit every day. 16:43 Makes a world of difference. 16:45 So now what kind of advances; did she do well here? 16:50 She did well. She's lost weight. She's able to exercise more. 16:55 She's walking like seven to eight miles a day. She is 17:00 feeling better. Overall she has more energy. She's excited about 17:05 the things she has learned and the things she is starting to 17:10 implement in her life. In fact, her husband and herself own a 17:16 seniors' care home and she wants to take some of these principles 17:22 and apply them for some of the residents at her home. 17:25 Oh now that would be excellent because you know as we see here 17:28 we've had some really older guests here, you know, 86, 87 17:32 years old and to see them moving around. And we've had a lot of 17:36 people in this session that had some mobility issues and you 17:40 doubt at first but now I know why y'all tell them that. If you 17:44 can just walk to the hallway and back and I see them doing that 17:48 and you know Peter was one in this session. At the end of the 17:52 session he was at Empire mine walking. He's got to rest, but 17:57 he's much better. 17:58 Oh yeah, it makes a difference. It really makes a difference. 18:00 And you know it strengthens your heart and that improves your 18:05 circulation and circulation is what's important because what 18:09 does the Bible say about blood? The life. Blood is where the 18:12 life is, so you've got to get that good blood to every cell 18:15 in your body and when you do that, you're going to have 18:19 better health. And as you do that you're going to fix the 18:22 problems that you have. You're going to improve your weight, 18:25 you're going to decrease the stress on your joints, you're 18:28 going to sleep better at night which helps your body to heal 18:32 and repair. Everything starts to improve. I tell people if they 18:35 want to get off medicine they have to replace it with a 18:37 different medicine and walking is the medicine. 18:40 And you know in every session you can almost see the room 18:43 around, people are like: OK we get it but they're 18:48 not real convinced but by the end I mean you see some of these 18:52 people. They don't want to quit walking. They're evaporating 18:56 before our eyes because they know and they feel the benefit 19:01 from the body moving, getting flexible, fluidity to it, the 19:06 more weight they lose the easier it is to move around. Absolutely 19:12 Absolutely. And yeah so these principles are great here 19:13 They're God's principles, that's why they work. 19:14 That's right. And them being in health care facility so to speak 19:19 working with people, it's easy to get out of shape themselves. 19:23 Sure, sure. Because Brian too, they both were having these 19:27 Yes, so it's important and I'm excited about what's going to 19:32 happen in their lives and what's going to happen with 19:34 their residents. I really am excited to see how God is going 19:37 bless through what they're doing 19:38 Oh yeah, she was sharing some of that even in counseling with 19:42 me about taking some of these older people, the people infirmed, 19:46 and get them moving, getting them exercising, changing the 19:49 way they eat. Because a lot of times you go into some of these 19:52 facilities and the food is deplorable. You know, they're 19:55 not moving around, they're playing checkers all day long 19:59 right, right, and they're just deteriorating. Here we got a 20:01 young person on one end of the spectrum and then on the other 20:04 end we've got these 87-year- olds that are here and they're 20:07 all benefitting tremendously from the exercise. 20:10 Yes, yes, so it's important, it's important and we've got to 20:13 do it every day. Because you know some people say well I walk 20:17 three days a week. Well yeah that's great, but if this is 20:20 becoming your medicine, how beneficial is medicine if you 20:23 take it three days a week. 20:24 Great point, Doctor. 20:26 So you've got to do it every day, got to do it every day. 20:29 It's the new medicine. 20:30 That's right, that's right, that's right. 20:33 Well anything else about her as we're getting ready to wrap up 20:36 that comes to mind that you?... 20:38 Well, I'm just excited to see that she's excited about 20:42 lifestyle change. And she's going to share what she's 20:46 learned with others and I'm really looking forward to 20:50 hearing the reports of how things go with her and her 20:52 family, because I think it's going to be a rich blessing, 20:55 not only for her family and the people in her home but her 20:58 circle of influence. 21:00 Well, Dr. Gallant, we're out of time but I think you so much, 21:02 God bless. 21:03 God bless you too. Good to see you Pastor Snead. 21:05 Friends don't go away. We'll be right back. 21:11 Every year in America there are over one million deaths because 21:13 of type II diabetes and chronic obesity. This includes heart 21:17 attacks and strokes. That's six-and-a-half 747s crashing 21:21 every day. What's even more amazing is that the fix is easy. 21:25 It's your lifestyle. Wouldn't it be nice if you could actually 21:29 add quality years to your life rather than dying one organ at 21:32 at a time? Obesity and diabetes are the cause of over a million 21:36 deaths per year. Most diseases are reversible because most 21:41 diseases are lifestyle diseases, especially type II diabetes and 21:46 chronic obesity. Seriously now they can be reversed and the 21:50 quality of your life can be renewed. Call NEWSTART today at 21:55 1-800-525-9192. You will see dramatic changes in the first 21:59 few days of our program and you'll be on the road to a 22:03 better, more robust quality of life. The NEWSTART programs are 22:07 simple and effective. 22:11 Welcome to Weimar Institute Research and today we have 22:16 Dr. Ramirez, the head of our research at Weimar College, who 22:20 teaches in our health science department research method and 22:24 today we have another angle at looking at some health 22:30 principles. Tell us about this particular angle Dr. Ramirez. 22:35 Yeah, this one is dealing about regularity and it's interesting 22:39 because you know I've been through more than 60 countries 22:41 lecturing about these principles of NEWSTART and people come to 22:45 me and said you know this is the first time I hear that 22:48 regularity is important for my health. 22:50 Yeah. We know that circadian rhythms are important and this 22:57 is our daily cycle. And we also know light helps set the 23:03 circadian rhythms and if our circadian rhythms are doing well 23:07 we're going to be sleeping better. But this is also taking 23:12 a look at not only regularity regarding sleep but regularity 23:16 in another area. 23:18 Also in your meals, eating your meals at the same time every day 23:24 including the weekends. 23:28 So if you have regularity in eating it actually can improve 23:31 your health. 23:33 That's right. 23:34 Now what area of health were you looking at. We were focusing 23:38 here on mental health. What effect does regularity in eating 23:43 and sleeping have on your depression. 23:46 You know, I went to a GI conference a little over a year 23:49 ago where they talked about even our bowel has a circadian rhythm 23:55 and it does much better if we have that rhythm aligned and on a 24:00 regular basis. 24:03 And we have the solution to the blue Monday that many people 24:06 suffer from worldwide. 24:09 Yeah the blue Monday, because they get off on their sleep and 24:15 they get off on their meals. 24:16 That's right. 24:18 So how many people were you looking at in this survey. 24:20 So this is a big sample; 5621 participants that did an eight 24:28 week community education program. 24:31 OK and that community education program was the depression and 24:36 anxiety recovery program. And by going to that program they 24:40 take a test at the beginning to see where they're at and 24:44 assess them and what did we find out in that first test? 24:47 What we found out is that those people that don't have 24:50 regularity tend to have higher levels of depression, 15 points 24:56 on average, compared to those that have that regularity, the 25:02 mental health is much better. 25:04 OK, so regularity in both things then, sleeping and eating, will 25:10 actually help your depression and anxiety significantly, 25:13 or not make it as severe if you have it. 25:15 And we also found out that those that are not regular, about 30 25:21 percent of them they don't sleep good. They have bad sleep. 25:26 OK. So it will also affect your sleep. Now what happened during 25:30 the eight weeks then. 25:32 So during the eight weeks they were educated on these NEWSTART 25:36 principles that are so important but also on that regularity 25:40 because our brain does not work when there's disaster in our 25:44 lives. 25:46 OK. So were some of them convinced enough to change their 25:49 lifestyle. I know the program isn't just about regularity, 25:51 there are a lot of other things like cognitive behavioral 25:55 therapy and nutrition. But did some people actually change 25:59 their lifestyle habit? 26:00 By the end of the program, 12 percent of those nonregulars 26:06 decided to become regulars and it was reflected in their scores 26:10 OK. So if they did become regular what happened? 26:12 If they became regular, it was reflected on lower depression 26:17 levels, some of them non depression levels. Also 26:20 their sleep quality. Only 8 percent by the end of the 26:28 program had bad sleep. So from 30 percent that didn't have 26:34 regularity those are regular; by the end 8 percent only had bad 26:38 sleep. 26:40 So just becoming regular in the time you're going to bed, the 26:42 time you're getting up and regular in meals can turn you 26:46 from a bad sleeper into a good sleeper. That's a dramatic 26:50 improvement. The vast majority of those who did that improved 26:54 just by doing that. 26:56 That's right. 26:57 And as a result of improving their circadian rhythms of their 27:01 sleep patterns and their meals their depression and anxiety 27:05 recovery scores became far better as well. 27:08 I would like to encourage you to be regular in your sleeping 27:14 and eating habits. It can pay rich dividends in better sleep 27:19 and better mood. Thank you for watching Weimar Institute 27:23 Research. 27:27 Well friends that's it for today but join us next week for 27:31 another episode. In the meantime pick up the phone and give us a 27:35 call at 1-800-525-9192. Mention the NEWSTART Now program 27:42 and receive the NEWSTART Special. 27:50 ¤ ¤ |
