¤ ¤ 00:00:01.36\00:01:08.40 Hey friends, welcome to another edition of NEWSTART Now. 00:01:11.67\00:01:13.84 I'm your host Damon Snead. I'm filling in for Ron Giannoni. 00:01:13.87\00:01:18.74 We have in our studio today Telecia Cooke. Let's take a look 00:01:18.77\00:01:23.75 at her life before she came to NEWSTART. 00:01:23.78\00:01:25.81 There are lots of reasons why I came to Weimar. Number one, 00:01:28.22\00:01:33.99 I spent the past 24 years home schooling my children and I see 00:01:34.02\00:01:39.79 myself as a caregiver. I've taken care of my children and 00:01:39.83\00:01:44.30 elderly people because we own an assisted living facility for 00:01:44.33\00:01:48.60 elderly and I enjoy taking care of people. But now I need to 00:01:48.64\00:01:52.41 take care of myself. Coming away from my everyday schedule and 00:01:52.44\00:01:58.85 seeing God's handiwork, stopping to smell the roses, it's a 00:01:58.88\00:02:05.22 beautiful thing. Before I leave here I'd like to have a renewal, 00:02:05.25\00:02:10.06 a spiritual renewal, a health renewal, emotional renewal. 00:02:10.09\00:02:18.93 Just learning how to love myself and take care of myself again 00:02:18.97\00:02:22.90 like I take care of others. 00:02:22.94\00:02:24.94 Hey friends, welcome back. Telesia welcome. 00:02:28.64\00:02:31.88 Thank you. 00:02:31.91\00:02:33.25 How are you doing? 00:02:33.28\00:02:34.62 I'm doing great. 00:02:34.65\00:02:35.98 So tell me about your experience here a little bit. When you came 00:02:36.02\00:02:40.16 here what you thought. How have things progressed for you? 00:02:40.19\00:02:44.53 Well when I came here I didn't know totally everything I was 00:02:44.56\00:02:49.20 going to get but I knew I wanted to come here. I wanted to lose 00:02:49.23\00:02:53.20 some weight. I knew I was going to learn something, didn't know 00:02:53.23\00:02:57.17 exactly what, but I got much more. 00:02:57.21\00:03:01.68 So what was the big surprise for you in this program? Maybe 00:03:01.71\00:03:05.41 something you didn't expect that happened? 00:03:05.45\00:03:09.02 What I did expect is finding Jesus in a personal way. 00:03:09.08\00:03:14.36 I didn't expect that. I knew I was going to eat some good food, 00:03:14.42\00:03:21.00 some different recipes I would learn but I realized that the 00:03:21.03\00:03:26.50 NEWSTART program was more about my relationship with God and 00:03:26.53\00:03:31.94 that the food part was just an extension of that. 00:03:31.97\00:03:36.64 It's interesting. We have a lot of people who have that same 00:03:36.71\00:03:40.38 testimony. They come here with health issues, problems going on 00:03:40.42\00:03:44.05 in their life and they're looking through a solution 00:03:44.09\00:03:45.69 through health, but then they'll come away saying, man I realized 00:03:45.72\00:03:49.66 that it was my life with Christ. There was something that was 00:03:49.69\00:03:52.13 missing there, something I knew was deeper with and then the 00:03:52.16\00:03:55.83 health was always a bonus. And Steve Romel tells all you that 00:03:55.86\00:04:00.14 on that first Sunday night that we here believe in prayer, we're 00:04:00.17\00:04:04.37 a team that believes in the power of God to aid in this 00:04:04.41\00:04:08.61 healing process and so you got that from the beginning. 00:04:08.64\00:04:13.68 From the beginning. You know you talked about the will of 00:04:13.72\00:04:19.19 faith and you took a lot from Steps to Christ and I've always 00:04:19.22\00:04:23.99 had the book Steps to Christ but to understand it in a way 00:04:24.03\00:04:28.56 that you presented it just opened my mind to a whole new 00:04:28.60\00:04:33.30 level of coming to Christ and literally the steps to get to 00:04:33.34\00:04:38.97 Him which I didn't understand that fully until really I heard 00:04:39.01\00:04:44.05 the message in the way you presented it. I think from each 00:04:44.08\00:04:49.18 person that works here to the participants, God was showing 00:04:49.22\00:04:53.12 me something. He was showing me another step. It's just really 00:04:53.15\00:04:57.03 amazing. The words Steps to Christ took on a whole new 00:04:57.06\00:05:01.23 language from every step. The moto here is walk, walk, walk 00:05:01.26\00:05:04.53 and literally with each step walking with a different person 00:05:04.57\00:05:08.50 each day the Lord was showing me a different step going towards 00:05:08.54\00:05:12.44 Him. 00:05:12.47\00:05:13.81 Now it's interesting that you say that the walk, walk, walk, 00:05:13.84\00:05:16.64 I like how you tie that with walking with God. But how was 00:05:16.68\00:05:19.68 exercise for you here? Did that get better? Did you get in 00:05:19.71\00:05:22.68 better shape or how did that work out? 00:05:22.72\00:05:24.05 I think I got in better shape because I had a car accident at 00:05:24.09\00:05:30.03 end of 2016 and I was not mobile for the past two years. I have 00:05:30.09\00:05:36.16 not exercised at all. So I came here broken. I came here 00:05:36.20\00:05:41.37 thinking that I couldn't really move much. I was hoping to get 00:05:41.40\00:05:45.81 better but I didn't realize how not moving actually kept me in 00:05:45.84\00:05:50.25 a stage of pain. It kept me stiff, it kept me immobile and 00:05:50.28\00:05:57.02 just by taking a step and more steps each day, it led me to a 00:05:57.09\00:06:02.32 new place both spiritually and physically and emotionally. 00:06:02.39\00:06:07.10 You see how you do that. You keep tying that spiritual to the 00:06:07.13\00:06:11.37 health side, OK, so the exercise is difficult at first 00:06:11.40\00:06:15.57 it's painful. Yeah. Yeah but you started progressing and doing 00:06:15.60\00:06:18.61 well and all along spiritually you're taking kind of that same 00:06:18.64\00:06:21.58 journey. 00:06:21.61\00:06:23.21 That's the part that's crazy to me is that it all tied in. 00:06:23.24\00:06:27.95 Even my walk this morning with one of the participants I was 00:06:27.98\00:06:32.85 just wow, we're making steps, we're taking one step closer 00:06:32.89\00:06:37.69 to the mountaintop. We're just taking one step closer to Christ 00:06:37.73\00:06:41.26 and even though it's like OK Steps to Christ, I'm really 00:06:41.30\00:06:45.30 taking steps closer to Christ and one step closer to health 00:06:45.33\00:06:49.30 and one step closer to, just to him overall. 00:06:49.34\00:06:52.91 So the health is moving along with the spirituality. 00:06:52.94\00:06:56.54 Now you know talking about another part of the program, how 00:06:56.58\00:06:58.58 was the food here? 00:06:58.61\00:06:59.95 The food was delicious and I enjoy good quality food and 00:06:59.98\00:07:05.69 I was surprised how flavorful. It was wonderful. The cooking 00:07:05.75\00:07:11.99 classes were great, the flavors and not having oil and not 00:07:12.06\00:07:18.00 having refined sugars and it all came together beautifully. 00:07:18.03\00:07:22.90 You can't imagine how food is ever going to taste good. When 00:07:22.94\00:07:27.31 you first get here you're like this is going to be a terrible 00:07:27.34\00:07:31.41 experience but I'm in it. When people leave, and this has been 00:07:31.45\00:07:35.85 most of the testimonies, they cannot believe the food ended up 00:07:35.88\00:07:40.26 being that good food. 00:07:40.29\00:07:41.62 It was delicious and anyone that knows me knows I 00:07:41.66\00:07:45.69 like good quality food well seasoned and it was very good 00:07:45.76\00:07:50.50 and I was able to lose weight and I just feel good. I feel 00:07:50.53\00:07:55.24 great. My pain level has diminished and I feel good. 00:07:55.27\00:08:01.94 So not tell me about your doctor your experience with your doctor 00:08:01.98\00:08:04.71 Who was your doctor again? 00:08:04.75\00:08:06.08 Dr. Gallant. 00:08:06.11\00:08:07.45 Dr. Gallant. Dr. G. How was your experience with Dr. G? 00:08:07.48\00:08:09.92 Very well. He's very professional and very 00:08:09.95\00:08:14.52 knowledgeable and he was very helpful, very helpful. 00:08:14.56\00:08:19.03 Very caring. 00:08:19.06\00:08:20.40 He's in tune with his patients. 00:08:20.46\00:08:21.80 He's passionate about this whole NEWSTART program. He believes 00:08:21.83\00:08:27.30 it. I appreciate that he began each session with prayer. 00:08:27.34\00:08:30.94 He gets on his knees and he puts himself before the Father in a 00:08:30.97\00:08:35.18 humble way and that his message is coming from God. So I really 00:08:35.21\00:08:40.75 appreciate that. He made the focus that's not just about, you 00:08:40.78\00:08:46.45 know, we or this. It's really the whole package. I think 00:08:46.49\00:08:52.16 everyone that works here that was the emphasis from the 00:08:52.19\00:08:56.77 hydrotherapy she prayed and had devotional with me and she 00:08:56.80\00:09:01.14 infused my name in the devotional text and I really appreciated that. It was 00:09:01.17\00:09:05.47 very personalized. And so I just thought that was great. Even the 00:09:05.51\00:09:10.61 medical center, the people that take your lab work, they prayed 00:09:10.65\00:09:15.25 with me, at the clinic. I mean where does that happen in our 00:09:15.28\00:09:19.79 traditional health care system. But they have the lab technician 00:09:19.82\00:09:24.33 hold your hand and pray with you after he draws your blood. 00:09:24.36\00:09:28.90 So where am I? 00:09:28.93\00:09:30.83 You don't feel like a stranger in some of these clinics where 00:09:30.87\00:09:35.14 you're just a diagnosis waiting to happen. You feel like a 00:09:35.17\00:09:38.54 brother or a sister to these people and they're trying to 00:09:38.57\00:09:41.78 help you through the power of God enlightening their minds 00:09:41.81\00:09:44.98 to your condition. 00:09:45.01\00:09:46.35 Yeah completely. You walk through those doors and even 00:09:46.38\00:09:50.49 though they're not seeing you personally they look at you in 00:09:50.52\00:09:53.66 the eyes and they say hello. Yeah. That's very special. And 00:09:53.69\00:09:57.16 it's very... you can tell that the Holy Spirit is here. 00:09:57.19\00:10:00.63 So now what is a big takeaway, a big ah-ha moment, something 00:10:00.66\00:10:05.40 that you're going to remember the most, the biggest impact? 00:10:05.43\00:10:09.70 It can be the spiritual or the spiritual and the health side. 00:10:09.74\00:10:13.98 Give us one on each. 00:10:14.01\00:10:15.34 OK, I'll start with the health. I understand that even a little 00:10:15.38\00:10:22.42 bit can ruin the whole batch. You know, like one rotten apple 00:10:22.45\00:10:27.52 could ruin the whole batch of apples. I just feel like you 00:10:27.56\00:10:31.49 know we make excuses just to have a little bit of this and a 00:10:31.53\00:10:35.83 little bit of that and it makes a big difference. So I think you 00:10:35.86\00:10:41.74 mentioned in one of your morning devotions. Be careful of doing 00:10:41.77\00:10:47.61 that. You know it's OK to take a little bit of this and a 00:10:47.64\00:10:50.15 a little bit of that and our relationship with God's the same 00:10:50.18\00:10:53.01 way. We're not going to go back. We're going to go forward on 00:10:53.08\00:10:56.32 that wheel of faith and we're going to do it every day. We're 00:10:56.35\00:11:01.32 going to die to self every day. So beside the food I learned 00:11:01.36\00:11:06.26 was portion size and the quality of food, whole food 00:11:06.29\00:11:10.47 eaten whole. The spiritual component was key. The wheel 00:11:10.50\00:11:15.40 of faith knowing that God is love, knowing that we have to 00:11:15.44\00:11:20.21 have a sinners need, I have to realize my need for Christ and 00:11:20.24\00:11:26.01 I have to get to that point of repentance and just it was a 00:11:26.05\00:11:31.02 great diagram. It was a great way to think about the process 00:11:31.05\00:11:34.72 and knowing that I have to do this daily, I have to die to 00:11:34.76\00:11:38.56 self-daily and if I start with that, that's going to help me 00:11:38.59\00:11:42.36 control other things in my life. 00:11:42.40\00:11:44.37 Yes ma'am. And that's why he's is going to help you control 00:11:44.40\00:11:47.00 everything. Well Telecia, we are out of time but we thank you so 00:11:47.04\00:11:50.91 very much. May God bless. 00:11:50.94\00:11:52.27 Thank you so much. 00:11:52.31\00:11:53.64 Friends don't go away, we'll be right back with Dr. Gallant. 00:11:53.68\00:11:57.98 ¤ ¤ 00:12:01.48\00:12:31.28 Welcome back friends. We have today with us Dr. Gallant. 00:12:32.15\00:12:35.65 Dr. Gallant, welcome. 00:12:35.68\00:12:37.72 Thank you, good to see you Pastor Snead. 00:12:37.75\00:12:39.89 Today we're going to be talking about a young lady, Ms. Telecia, 00:12:39.95\00:12:44.83 that has been in pretty good health, a young lady, and then 00:12:44.86\00:12:49.66 had a tragic accident and it went downhill from there. 00:12:49.70\00:12:54.14 What can you tell us about her? 00:12:54.17\00:12:55.80 She has sustained a back injury in this car accident and she had 00:12:55.87\00:12:59.17 been healthy exercising. She showed me some pictures from 00:12:59.21\00:13:05.31 before and she really had been working out and doing a lot of 00:13:05.35\00:13:10.29 things and because of her back injury she was limited in what 00:13:10.32\00:13:15.79 she could do; limited in her exercise, limited in her sleep, 00:13:15.82\00:13:20.90 and just having a lot of pain and I think, as we've talked 00:13:20.93\00:13:25.90 about before, she found comfort, comfort in food and she says she 00:13:25.93\00:13:31.31 gained over 100 pounds. 00:13:31.34\00:13:32.67 Whew, that's a lot of weight! 00:13:32.71\00:13:34.28 That's a lot of weight. So that's really hard on your body 00:13:34.31\00:13:38.88 and that produces a lot of health challenges. She was 00:13:38.91\00:13:41.62 having a lot of back pain, also having hip pain and so that 00:13:41.65\00:13:46.05 limited her exercise. A couple months back her husband came 00:13:46.09\00:13:50.83 to the program and he said he really wanted to send her up 00:13:50.86\00:13:55.56 here. And I think that's so important. I think it's 00:13:55.60\00:13:57.57 important for couples to be united, to be on the same page, 00:13:57.63\00:14:03.34 especially when it comes to lifestyle and health. So I'm 00:14:03.37\00:14:09.01 glad that she was able to come and she has seen that this is a 00:14:09.04\00:14:13.58 life changer. 00:14:13.62\00:14:14.95 We've had a lot of couples here where they didn't have that 00:14:14.98\00:14:17.72 support at home and going back home was always difficult. 00:14:17.75\00:14:21.59 Yes. Without the support. Now something you talked about. 00:14:21.62\00:14:26.33 Weight gain on the body. You know if you take just something 00:14:26.36\00:14:30.90 as small as a 10-pound dumbbell and walk around with that for a 00:14:30.93\00:14:35.44 few hours you feel the weight on your body much less a 00:14:35.47\00:14:40.68 50-pound on each side, a hundred pounds. So how does weight, even 00:14:40.71\00:14:43.35 on a young person, how can that affect the bones, the joints? 00:14:43.38\00:14:47.35 Well you know excess weight creates stress on your joints 00:14:47.38\00:14:52.05 and that makes them wear out quicker you know. So when you're 00:14:52.09\00:14:57.13 carrying excess weight like that it's hard on your body, it's 00:14:57.16\00:15:02.16 hard on your joints. She has back pain and excess weight 00:15:02.20\00:15:06.27 makes the back pain worse. It exacerbates it so it makes it 00:15:06.33\00:15:10.31 harder for it to get better and she didn't feel like exercising 00:15:10.37\00:15:15.14 and she didn't have a lot of energy. She was sick and hurting 00:15:15.18\00:15:19.91 and frustrated with all these things that had happened 00:15:19.95\00:15:22.42 because her health prior to that has been very good. 00:15:22.48\00:15:24.85 Yeah and they don't want to get up, they don't want to move and 00:15:24.92\00:15:28.09 then it gets worse and we've seen that where some can get so 00:15:28.12\00:15:31.26 bad, so immobile then they can't and it really gets out 00:15:31.29\00:15:35.96 It's hard, it's really hard. And what I tell people is when these 00:15:36.00\00:15:38.03 happen is you really have to just start where you are and 00:15:38.07\00:15:42.37 just do a little bit. Tell you a quick story. There was a man 00:15:42.40\00:15:46.21 who lived on a half-mile drive way in the country and he was 00:15:46.24\00:15:49.71 having chest pain. His mail box was at the road and the house 00:15:49.74\00:15:52.98 was a half-mile in. And he made up his mind that he was going 00:15:53.01\00:15:56.22 walk and walk a little bit more every day. So he'd walk 00:15:56.25\00:15:59.65 towards the mail box until he started to get pain. Then he 00:15:59.69\00:16:03.46 would make a line in the gravel with his foot, rest and walk 00:16:03.49\00:16:07.73 back home. The next day his goal was to go past that line and 00:16:07.76\00:16:11.67 make a new line and when he did that within a month he could 00:16:11.70\00:16:15.64 walk to the mail box, rest and walk back home. Within two 00:16:15.67\00:16:19.87 months he could walk to the mailbox and back without having 00:16:19.91\00:16:23.61 to stop. And that's what people need to do. If you are in this 00:16:23.65\00:16:27.45 circumstance where you've had an injury or you've just let things 00:16:27.48\00:16:31.25 go and suddenly you find yourself in a position where 00:16:31.29\00:16:33.86 you're overweight, you're sick, you have health challenges, if 00:16:33.89\00:16:37.29 you can just start some lifestyle changes and just 00:16:37.33\00:16:39.89 slowly start and gradually increase a little bit every day. 00:16:39.93\00:16:43.26 Makes a world of difference. 00:16:43.30\00:16:45.47 So now what kind of advances; did she do well here? 00:16:45.50\00:16:49.97 She did well. She's lost weight. She's able to exercise more. 00:16:50.01\00:16:55.68 She's walking like seven to eight miles a day. She is 00:16:55.71\00:17:00.82 feeling better. Overall she has more energy. She's excited about 00:17:00.85\00:17:05.45 the things she has learned and the things she is starting to 00:17:05.49\00:17:10.06 implement in her life. In fact, her husband and herself own a 00:17:10.09\00:17:16.16 seniors' care home and she wants to take some of these principles 00:17:16.20\00:17:22.24 and apply them for some of the residents at her home. 00:17:22.27\00:17:25.57 Oh now that would be excellent because you know as we see here 00:17:25.61\00:17:28.84 we've had some really older guests here, you know, 86, 87 00:17:28.88\00:17:32.65 years old and to see them moving around. And we've had a lot of 00:17:32.68\00:17:36.82 people in this session that had some mobility issues and you 00:17:36.85\00:17:40.46 doubt at first but now I know why y'all tell them that. If you 00:17:40.49\00:17:44.16 can just walk to the hallway and back and I see them doing that 00:17:44.19\00:17:48.36 and you know Peter was one in this session. At the end of the 00:17:48.43\00:17:52.80 session he was at Empire mine walking. He's got to rest, but 00:17:52.83\00:17:57.21 he's much better. 00:17:57.24\00:17:58.57 Oh yeah, it makes a difference. It really makes a difference. 00:17:58.61\00:18:00.68 And you know it strengthens your heart and that improves your 00:18:00.71\00:18:05.35 circulation and circulation is what's important because what 00:18:05.41\00:18:09.08 does the Bible say about blood? The life. Blood is where the 00:18:09.12\00:18:12.92 life is, so you've got to get that good blood to every cell 00:18:12.95\00:18:15.92 in your body and when you do that, you're going to have 00:18:15.96\00:18:19.23 better health. And as you do that you're going to fix the 00:18:19.29\00:18:22.06 problems that you have. You're going to improve your weight, 00:18:22.10\00:18:25.17 you're going to decrease the stress on your joints, you're 00:18:25.20\00:18:28.50 going to sleep better at night which helps your body to heal 00:18:28.54\00:18:32.04 and repair. Everything starts to improve. I tell people if they 00:18:32.07\00:18:35.54 want to get off medicine they have to replace it with a 00:18:35.58\00:18:37.71 different medicine and walking is the medicine. 00:18:37.75\00:18:40.12 And you know in every session you can almost see the room 00:18:40.15\00:18:43.55 around, people are like: OK we get it but they're 00:18:43.59\00:18:48.06 not real convinced but by the end I mean you see some of these 00:18:48.09\00:18:52.06 people. They don't want to quit walking. They're evaporating 00:18:52.09\00:18:56.06 before our eyes because they know and they feel the benefit 00:18:56.10\00:19:01.44 from the body moving, getting flexible, fluidity to it, the 00:19:01.47\00:19:06.71 more weight they lose the easier it is to move around. Absolutely 00:19:06.74\00:19:12.05 Absolutely. And yeah so these principles are great here 00:19:12.08\00:19:13.42 They're God's principles, that's why they work. 00:19:13.45\00:19:14.78 That's right. And them being in health care facility so to speak 00:19:14.82\00:19:19.05 working with people, it's easy to get out of shape themselves. 00:19:19.09\00:19:23.43 Sure, sure. Because Brian too, they both were having these 00:19:23.46\00:19:27.73 Yes, so it's important and I'm excited about what's going to 00:19:27.76\00:19:32.00 happen in their lives and what's going to happen with 00:19:32.03\00:19:33.94 their residents. I really am excited to see how God is going 00:19:34.00\00:19:37.27 bless through what they're doing 00:19:37.31\00:19:38.67 Oh yeah, she was sharing some of that even in counseling with 00:19:38.71\00:19:42.54 me about taking some of these older people, the people 00:19:42.58\00:19:46.41 infirmed, and get them moving, getting them exercising, 00:19:46.45\00:19:49.35 changing the way they eat. Because a lot of times you go 00:19:49.38\00:19:52.29 into some of these facilities and the food is deplorable. You 00:19:52.32\00:19:55.92 know, they're not moving around, they're playing checkers all day 00:19:55.96\00:19:59.03 long right, right, and they're just deteriorating. Here we got 00:19:59.06\00:20:01.76 a young person on one end of the spectrum and then on the other 00:20:01.80\00:20:04.40 end we've got these 87-year- olds that are here and they're 00:20:04.43\00:20:06.97 all benefitting tremendously from the exercise. 00:20:07.00\00:20:10.41 Yes, yes, so it's important, it's important and we've got to 00:20:10.44\00:20:13.91 do it every day. Because you know some people say well I walk 00:20:13.94\00:20:17.11 three days a week. Well yeah that's great, but if this is 00:20:17.15\00:20:20.35 becoming your medicine, how beneficial is medicine if you 00:20:20.42\00:20:23.59 take it three days a week. 00:20:23.62\00:20:24.95 Great point, Doctor. 00:20:24.99\00:20:26.45 So you've got to do it every day, got to do it every day. 00:20:26.49\00:20:29.26 It's the new medicine. 00:20:29.32\00:20:30.83 That's right, that's right, that's right. 00:20:30.86\00:20:33.46 Well anything else about her as we're getting ready to wrap up 00:20:33.50\00:20:36.26 that comes to mind that you?... 00:20:36.30\00:20:38.23 Well, I'm just excited to see that she's excited about 00:20:38.27\00:20:42.40 lifestyle change. And she's going to share what she's 00:20:42.44\00:20:46.64 learned with others and I'm really looking forward to 00:20:46.68\00:20:49.98 hearing the reports of how things go with her and her 00:20:50.01\00:20:52.75 family, because I think it's going to be a rich blessing, 00:20:52.81\00:20:55.72 not only for her family and the people in her home but her 00:20:55.75\00:20:58.65 circle of influence. 00:20:58.69\00:21:00.02 Well, Dr. Gallant, we're out of time but I think you so much, 00:21:00.06\00:21:02.56 God bless. 00:21:02.59\00:21:03.93 God bless you too. Good to see you Pastor Snead. 00:21:03.96\00:21:05.46 Friends don't go away. We'll be right back. 00:21:05.49\00:21:07.36 Every year in America there are over one million deaths because 00:21:11.53\00:21:13.13 of type II diabetes and chronic obesity. This includes heart 00:21:13.17\00:21:17.21 attacks and strokes. That's six-and-a-half 747s crashing 00:21:17.27\00:21:21.58 every day. What's even more amazing is that the fix is easy. 00:21:21.61\00:21:25.55 It's your lifestyle. Wouldn't it be nice if you could actually 00:21:25.58\00:21:29.12 add quality years to your life rather than dying one organ at 00:21:29.15\00:21:32.92 at a time? Obesity and diabetes are the cause of over a million 00:21:32.95\00:21:36.66 deaths per year. Most diseases are reversible because most 00:21:36.69\00:21:41.00 diseases are lifestyle diseases, especially type II diabetes and 00:21:41.03\00:21:46.33 chronic obesity. Seriously now they can be reversed and the 00:21:46.37\00:21:50.11 quality of your life can be renewed. Call NEWSTART today at 00:21:50.17\00:21:55.61 1-800-525-9192. You will see dramatic changes in the first 00:21:55.64\00:21:59.71 few days of our program and you'll be on the road to a 00:21:59.75\00:22:03.72 better, more robust quality of life. The NEWSTART programs are 00:22:03.79\00:22:07.46 simple and effective. 00:22:07.49\00:22:09.42 Welcome to Weimar Institute Research and today we have 00:22:11.53\00:22:16.13 Dr. Ramirez, the head of our research at Weimar College, who 00:22:16.16\00:22:20.47 teaches in our health science department research method and 00:22:20.50\00:22:24.77 today we have another angle at looking at some health 00:22:24.81\00:22:30.58 principles. Tell us about this particular angle Dr. Ramirez. 00:22:30.61\00:22:34.98 Yeah, this one is dealing about regularity and it's interesting 00:22:35.02\00:22:39.35 because you know I've been through more than 60 countries 00:22:39.39\00:22:41.66 lecturing about these principles of NEWSTART and people come to 00:22:41.69\00:22:45.79 me and said you know this is the first time I hear that 00:22:45.86\00:22:48.20 regularity is important for my health. 00:22:48.23\00:22:50.77 Yeah. We know that circadian rhythms are important and this 00:22:50.80\00:22:57.27 is our daily cycle. And we also know light helps set the 00:22:57.31\00:23:03.71 circadian rhythms and if our circadian rhythms are doing well 00:23:03.75\00:23:07.88 we're going to be sleeping better. But this is also taking 00:23:07.92\00:23:12.39 a look at not only regularity regarding sleep but regularity 00:23:12.42\00:23:16.89 in another area. 00:23:16.93\00:23:18.26 Also in your meals, eating your meals at the same time every day 00:23:18.29\00:23:24.77 including the weekends. 00:23:24.80\00:23:28.00 So if you have regularity in eating it actually can improve 00:23:28.04\00:23:31.64 your health. 00:23:31.67\00:23:33.21 That's right. 00:23:33.24\00:23:34.68 Now what area of health were you looking at. We were focusing 00:23:34.71\00:23:38.85 here on mental health. What effect does regularity in eating 00:23:38.88\00:23:42.98 and sleeping have on your depression. 00:23:43.02\00:23:46.79 You know, I went to a GI conference a little over a year 00:23:46.82\00:23:49.69 ago where they talked about even our bowel has a circadian rhythm 00:23:49.72\00:23:55.13 and it does much better if we have that rhythm aligned and on 00:23:55.16\00:24:00.50 a regular basis. 00:24:00.54\00:24:02.94 And we have the solution to the blue Monday that many people 00:24:03.00\00:24:06.54 suffer from worldwide. 00:24:06.57\00:24:09.31 Yeah the blue Monday, because they get off on their sleep and 00:24:09.34\00:24:15.32 they get off on their meals. 00:24:15.35\00:24:16.69 That's right. 00:24:16.72\00:24:18.05 So how many people were you looking at in this survey. 00:24:18.09\00:24:20.72 So this is a big sample; 5621 participants that did an eight 00:24:20.76\00:24:28.13 week community education program. 00:24:28.16\00:24:31.40 OK and that community education program was the depression and 00:24:31.43\00:24:36.10 anxiety recovery program. And by going to that program they 00:24:36.17\00:24:40.24 take a test at the beginning to see where they're at and 00:24:40.28\00:24:44.05 assess them and what did we find out in that first test? 00:24:44.11\00:24:47.55 What we found out is that those people that don't have 00:24:47.58\00:24:50.95 regularity tend to have higher levels of depression, 15 points 00:24:50.99\00:24:56.56 on average, compared to those that have that regularity, the 00:24:56.59\00:25:02.16 mental health is much better. 00:25:02.20\00:25:04.23 OK, so regularity in both things then, sleeping and eating, will 00:25:04.27\00:25:10.77 actually help your depression and anxiety significantly, 00:25:10.81\00:25:13.51 or not make it as severe if you have it. 00:25:13.71\00:25:15.74 And we also found out that those that are not regular, about 30 00:25:15.94\00:25:21.28 percent of them they don't sleep good. They have bad sleep. 00:25:21.32\00:25:26.12 OK. So it will also affect your sleep. Now what happened during 00:25:26.15\00:25:30.96 the eight weeks then. 00:25:30.99\00:25:32.33 So during the eight weeks they were educated on these NEWSTART 00:25:32.36\00:25:36.90 principles that are so important but also on that regularity 00:25:36.93\00:25:40.64 because our brain does not work when there's disaster in our 00:25:40.67\00:25:44.84 lives. 00:25:44.87\00:25:46.21 OK. So were some of them convinced enough to change their 00:25:46.24\00:25:49.08 lifestyle. I know the program isn't just about regularity, 00:25:49.11\00:25:51.68 there are a lot of other things like cognitive behavioral 00:25:51.71\00:25:55.48 therapy and nutrition. But did some people actually change 00:25:55.55\00:25:59.25 their lifestyle habit? 00:25:59.32\00:26:00.66 By the end of the program, 12 percent of those nonregulars 00:26:00.69\00:26:06.03 decided to become regulars and it was reflected in their scores 00:26:06.06\00:26:10.13 OK. So if they did become regular what happened? 00:26:10.17\00:26:12.17 If they became regular, it was reflected on lower depression 00:26:12.20\00:26:17.17 levels, some of them non depression levels. Also 00:26:17.21\00:26:20.88 their sleep quality. Only 8 percent by the end of the 00:26:20.91\00:26:28.42 program had bad sleep. So from 30 percent that didn't have 00:26:28.45\00:26:34.19 regularity those are regular; by the end 8 percent only had bad 00:26:34.22\00:26:38.59 sleep. 00:26:38.63\00:26:39.96 So just becoming regular in the time you're going to bed, the 00:26:40.00\00:26:42.33 time you're getting up and regular in meals can turn you 00:26:42.36\00:26:46.80 from a bad sleeper into a good sleeper. That's a dramatic 00:26:46.84\00:26:50.71 improvement. The vast majority of those who did that improved 00:26:50.77\00:26:54.61 just by doing that. 00:26:54.64\00:26:55.98 That's right. 00:26:56.01\00:26:57.81 And as a result of improving their circadian rhythms of their 00:26:57.85\00:27:01.48 sleep patterns and their meals their depression and anxiety 00:27:01.52\00:27:05.12 recovery scores became far better as well. 00:27:05.15\00:27:08.92 I would like to encourage you to be regular in your sleeping 00:27:08.96\00:27:14.03 and eating habits. It can pay rich dividends in better sleep 00:27:14.06\00:27:19.40 and better mood. Thank you for watching Weimar Institute 00:27:19.43\00:27:23.67 Research. 00:27:23.71\00:27:25.47 Well friends that's it for today but join us next week for 00:27:27.48\00:27:31.58 another episode.
