¤ ¤ 00:00:01.36\00:01:12.03 Hi Friends and welcome to another edition of 00:01:12.07\00:01:15.30 NEWSTART Now. I'm your host Ron Giannoni. In our studio we 00:01:15.34\00:01:20.28 have an unusual visit today. We have a young lady who came in 00:01:20.31\00:01:25.71 support of her husband not knowing that she had some 00:01:25.75\00:01:30.09 problems herself. But let's take a look at when she first arrived 00:01:30.12\00:01:34.39 I'm here because of my weight and I'm a companion to my 00:01:38.23\00:01:42.56 husband who is not well, and anxiety. But the weight is a 00:01:42.60\00:01:48.90 problem and with the weight my blood pressure has increased 00:01:48.94\00:01:52.57 a little bit. So if I can improve my lifestyle and live a 00:01:52.61\00:01:57.58 longer life. 00:01:57.65\00:01:59.31 Welcome back friends. Cathy how are you dear? 00:02:02.22\00:02:05.49 I'm fine today. 00:02:05.52\00:02:06.86 Good. I know. 00:02:06.89\00:02:08.22 I thought I was fine last time I saw you. 00:02:08.26\00:02:10.99 You know I already let the cat out of the bag. You're here to 00:02:11.03\00:02:15.76 support your husband. So you decide to see the doctor while 00:02:15.80\00:02:19.47 your here. You do a blood draw and you find out what? 00:02:19.50\00:02:24.57 I found out that I had borderline diabetes. I had very 00:02:24.61\00:02:31.45 high sugar levels, my triglycerides were high 00:02:31.48\00:02:33.72 I had a urinary tract infection. Uh-huh. So I was in worse shape 00:02:33.75\00:02:39.62 than he was actually. Uh-huh. His cholesterol level was high 00:02:39.65\00:02:43.99 but that was about all. 00:02:44.03\00:02:45.36 That was about it? 00:02:45.39\00:02:46.73 Uh-huh. Yeah Of course I was worse off than him. 00:02:46.76\00:02:49.16 Isn't that something. 00:02:49.20\00:02:50.57 The doctor told me I needed some work to be done. 00:02:50.60\00:02:52.63 All right. Now your doctor is? 00:02:52.67\00:02:55.17 Dr. Gallant. 00:02:55.20\00:02:56.54 Dr. Gallant. Uh-huh. And so you saw Dr. Gallant before this 00:02:56.57\00:03:02.31 interview, right? Today. 00:03:02.34\00:03:04.78 That's correct. Uh-huh. Just was about 15 minutes ago. 00:03:04.81\00:03:07.28 OK, now what did he say about your numbers now? 00:03:07.32\00:03:10.55 They're incredible. My triglycerides went for 157 down 00:03:10.59\00:03:15.92 to 137, sugar level 109 down to 99. My cholesterol was 188 and 00:03:15.96\00:03:24.27 now it's 150. And my lousy LDL was 122, now it's down to 91. 00:03:24.30\00:03:33.38 Wow. Everything's down to normal 00:03:33.41\00:03:36.71 or below. Uh-huh. So I'm a lot healthier today. 00:03:36.75\00:03:40.55 Yeah and you told me before we started the program that you 00:03:40.58\00:03:44.82 lost something. What'd you lose? 00:03:44.85\00:03:47.26 I lost almost eight pounds. 00:03:47.29\00:03:48.62 And what did that do to your circumference? 00:03:48.66\00:03:51.93 It 2 inches around, completely around. I'm going to have to 00:03:51.96\00:03:56.26 have a safety pin to hold my skirt up for graduation tonight. 00:03:56.30\00:04:00.60 You know, it just amazes me when I see people come like yourself 00:04:00.64\00:04:07.94 to the NEWSTART program and they measure, because we do everyone, 00:04:07.98\00:04:14.15 and some people lose even more than that. 00:04:14.18\00:04:17.05 Yes they have. 00:04:17.09\00:04:18.42 We had a woman here many, many, many years ago; she lost four 00:04:18.45\00:04:24.39 dress sizes. Did not lose a pound, but lost four dress sizes 00:04:24.43\00:04:30.47 So she went (whistles) like that. 00:04:30.50\00:04:33.37 Boy that's amazing. 00:04:33.40\00:04:34.74 That is amazing. 00:04:34.77\00:04:36.10 Uh-huh. Give her several safety pins. 00:04:36.14\00:04:37.47 She didn't have anything that fit her. 00:04:37.51\00:04:40.58 So what do you think of this place? This place that's called 00:04:40.61\00:04:46.28 NEWSTART? 00:04:46.31\00:04:47.65 It's incredible. It does give you a new beginning in life. 00:04:47.68\00:04:50.59 Makes you more aware of your health and if you have a spouse 00:04:50.62\00:04:55.22 it gives you a longer life with your spouse and makes you a 00:04:55.26\00:04:57.53 better person, better wife. 00:04:57.56\00:04:59.19 Amen. So are you saying to our viewers then if they're 00:04:59.23\00:05:05.07 contemplating attending a NEWSTART program to bring their 00:05:05.10\00:05:09.37 spouse? 00:05:09.40\00:05:10.77 Absolutely. It's real educational. You can make meals 00:05:10.81\00:05:16.85 that are really tasty. You have a lot of time together. And the 00:05:16.88\00:05:22.42 spiritual, Damon Snead, he's wonderful. Actually we are 00:05:22.45\00:05:27.92 going to get baptized August the fourth up in Maine, my 00:05:27.96\00:05:31.93 husband and I. He's going to be rebaptized and I'm going to be 00:05:31.96\00:05:34.60 baptized. Really. Uh-huh. 00:05:34.63\00:05:36.56 Awesome. Now you were raised? 00:05:36.60\00:05:38.63 I was raised Mennonite. 00:05:38.67\00:05:40.30 Mennonite. I think you mentioned that before. 00:05:40.34\00:05:42.57 Yes, uh-huh, that's correct. 00:05:42.60\00:05:43.94 That's awesome. Congratulations. 00:05:43.97\00:05:46.51 Why thank you, thank you very much. Yeah, we're looking 00:05:46.54\00:05:48.84 forward to it. 00:05:48.88\00:05:50.21 So I'm going to be interviewing Damon a little while later as 00:05:50.25\00:05:53.52 part of this program. 00:05:53.55\00:05:54.98 Oh, good. You should give him credit for us being baptized 00:05:55.02\00:05:58.02 again. I certainly will. He gets a 00:05:58.05\00:06:00.96 lot of 'at a boys for doing that. You know actually he's 00:06:00.99\00:06:04.99 baptized more people here at Moses Rock I think than his 00:06:05.03\00:06:09.90 three predecessors. 00:06:09.93\00:06:11.63 Yeah he had offered to baptize us and we would have gone and 00:06:11.67\00:06:15.17 done it but we had already promised David's brother that he 00:06:15.20\00:06:18.11 could baptize us. Uh-huh. 00:06:18.14\00:06:20.58 Oh yes that would be special. 00:06:20.61\00:06:22.38 Uh-huh, yeah, yeah, that would be special. We could stay at his 00:06:22.41\00:06:23.75 place and he could baptize us up Maine. 00:06:23.78\00:06:25.58 So who's your favorite person? Besides me. No, of all the 00:06:25.61\00:06:32.99 people you've met here on staff? 00:06:33.02\00:06:35.76 Donna, Donna was really a friend to me. 00:06:35.79\00:06:38.49 Is she the sweetest person. 00:06:38.53\00:06:41.03 Yes, uh-huh she is. I had told her more about me in the first 00:06:41.06\00:06:44.53 massage that she had given me than I have told my best friend. 00:06:44.57\00:06:48.57 And just in that 45 minutes of the massage, I had told her more 00:06:48.60\00:06:53.04 about myself than I have told anybody. 00:06:53.07\00:06:55.34 You know Donna's a nurse? Yes, uh-huh, as well as a 00:06:55.38\00:06:59.11 massage therapist. 00:06:59.15\00:07:00.48 Yeah, she's does both jobs well. 00:07:00.52\00:07:01.85 And she loves it here and she is such a blessing to be a part of 00:07:01.88\00:07:08.36 the NEWSTART program. But thank you for mentioning Donna. 00:07:08.39\00:07:12.06 Yeah, Donna's wonderful and also Snead, Damon Snead. He was my 00:07:12.09\00:07:18.57 second favorite. He let us know that he wasn't perfect when he 00:07:18.60\00:07:22.84 got here either when he was baptized. 00:07:22.87\00:07:26.37 I don't think any of us were. Yeah. Well I know none of us are 00:07:26.41\00:07:29.68 Yeah, but he actually came out and told us, you know. That was 00:07:29.71\00:07:33.42 good. I knew that he was not saintly all the time. 00:07:33.45\00:07:38.99 Yes, he's a wonderful man. Yeah he is. 00:07:39.02\00:07:40.42 And so the cooking classes? Did you learn a lot? 00:07:40.46\00:07:44.69 Michelle, yeah, she's really energetic. Oh yeah, uh-huh, 00:07:44.73\00:07:48.76 she's terrific. Yeah, cooking class was wonderful and 00:07:48.80\00:07:52.90 everything was very tasty. And I can't wait to get home to 00:07:52.93\00:07:56.37 restock my kitchen with the supplies I need to make the 00:07:56.40\00:08:00.94 ice cream and the beans and a different way of making beans. 00:08:00.98\00:08:04.11 It was very valuable. 00:08:04.15\00:08:09.18 Well now that you've found out what you have and how are you 00:08:09.22\00:08:16.22 and your husband? Well I can talk to him about that but how 00:08:16.26\00:08:20.03 is he doing. 00:08:20.06\00:08:21.40 He's doing pretty good, he is. He's doing well himself but he 00:08:21.43\00:08:26.07 needs a lot of support and that's why he married me. Uh-huh 00:08:26.10\00:08:29.37 So he's doing very well and I'm going to go away after we get 00:08:29.40\00:08:33.21 home after two weeks. I'm going on a cruise to the Mexican 00:08:33.24\00:08:36.38 Riviera so I've got to be real careful. I'm going to call them 00:08:36.41\00:08:39.15 up because they do do vegan now if you tell them ahead of 00:08:39.18\00:08:43.28 time. So I'm going to package everything and put down one carb 00:08:43.32\00:08:46.59 like of a vege-burger so that way he'll know exactly how many 00:08:46.62\00:08:50.43 carbs he's eating, how many proteins he's eating so he can 00:08:50.46\00:08:53.23 just open up the freezer and pick out what he wants. 00:08:53.26\00:08:55.46 All right. 00:08:55.50\00:08:56.83 So I expect him to continue this when I'm gone because I'm going 00:08:56.87\00:08:59.83 to continue. 00:08:59.87\00:09:01.20 Cathy, I want to thank you for joining us. 00:09:01.24\00:09:03.51 Oh well think you for inviting me. 00:09:03.54\00:09:05.74 Yeah. May God bless you. 00:09:05.77\00:09:07.11 Oh why thank you. 00:09:07.14\00:09:08.48 And thank you friends. But don't go away because Dr. Gallant 00:09:08.51\00:09:12.31 will be up next. 00:09:12.35\00:09:13.75 ¤ ¤ 00:09:13.78\00:09:49.25 Welcome back friends. Help me welcome Dr. Roger Gallant. 00:09:49.28\00:09:52.19 Ron good to be here. 00:09:52.22\00:09:53.56 You know as I have told you in the past, I know you're real 00:09:53.59\00:09:56.69 busy. In fact, after this program you got to go do a 00:09:56.73\00:10:01.23 lecture so we're going to make it real quick. But I want people 00:10:01.26\00:10:04.17 to know that they can visit you at Stallant Health 00:10:04.20\00:10:08.17 which is right 00:10:08.20\00:10:09.77 on campus here at Weimar. All they need to do is give you a 00:10:09.80\00:10:13.64 call at 540-637-4025. They can call, make an appointment, stop 00:10:13.68\00:10:26.25 in and see you. I know they're going to want to after this 00:10:26.29\00:10:28.69 interview. 00:10:28.72\00:10:30.06 Well, praise the Lord. We're happy to see them. 00:10:30.09\00:10:31.73 Now let's talk about Catherine for a moment. I don't recollect 00:10:31.76\00:10:38.93 that she knew a lot of the problems she had been... 00:10:38.97\00:10:42.20 Well she knew some of them but came here and found she had a 00:10:43.20\00:10:46.34 couple of others as well. You know, when I first met her she 00:10:46.37\00:10:50.88 said, I really don't have a lot of problems. I'm actually doing 00:10:50.91\00:10:55.18 pretty OK you know. And then we started talking and checking her 00:10:55.22\00:10:59.12 out and actually found that her blood sugar was a little bit 00:10:59.15\00:11:03.09 high, so she was a borderline diabetic. She was... 00:11:03.12\00:11:06.56 What do you mean by a little bit high. Could you give me a number 00:11:06.59\00:11:09.66 I don't like to give a lot of numbers but this one is one you 00:11:09.70\00:11:13.54 can give. So a blood sugar of 99 and below is considered 00:11:13.57\00:11:17.87 normal. OK? So a blood sugar from 100 to 125 is considered 00:11:17.91\00:11:24.11 borderline or prediabetic. Yeah. And hers fell in that range of 00:11:24.15\00:11:29.82 being prediabetic. 00:11:29.85\00:11:31.19 And she didn't know that. 00:11:31.22\00:11:32.55 She didn't know that. So we started treating her and her 00:11:32.59\00:11:36.36 sugars came down but it was slow to come down. So it's a good 00:11:36.39\00:11:40.76 thing she was here and that she was doing the whole program, 00:11:40.80\00:11:43.53 because it made a difference. But by the end of the program 00:11:43.57\00:11:46.84 her sugar was much better, you know. 00:11:46.87\00:11:49.14 Praise the Lord. 00:11:49.17\00:11:50.51 So praise the Lord is right. 00:11:50.54\00:11:51.87 Now the other condition, how does she fare in that? 00:11:51.91\00:11:54.84 She did well. She'd had some back pain issues and she'd had 00:11:54.88\00:12:00.48 some anxiety and by God's grace all of those things improved. 00:12:00.52\00:12:05.92 We also found that she had a urinary tract infection. 00:12:05.95\00:12:08.66 That is interesting. 00:12:08.69\00:12:10.33 And so we were able to get that cleared up. She didn't realize 00:12:10.36\00:12:12.76 that she had that as well either 00:12:12.79\00:12:14.20 Now how would you clear that up? 00:12:14.23\00:12:15.56 Well in her case we actually put her on antibiotics for a little 00:12:15.60\00:12:20.00 bit and then we gave her some herbal treatments to help 00:12:20.04\00:12:22.74 complete the process and everything worked nicely. Yeah. 00:12:22.77\00:12:28.14 So praise the Lord for that. 00:12:28.18\00:12:29.51 How much weight did she lose, do you know? 00:12:29.54\00:12:32.38 She lost, I don't remember off the top of my head. I'm sorry I 00:12:32.41\00:12:34.35 didn't review that before we got here, but I will tell you this. 00:12:34.38\00:12:37.99 She and her husband both left here feeling a lot better having 00:12:38.02\00:12:42.96 lost weight. They came all the way here from Maryland and they 00:12:42.99\00:12:48.13 are Weimar friendly and they were walking, they were eating 00:12:48.16\00:12:53.30 healthy, drinking lots of water, and by God's grace they were 00:12:53.34\00:12:57.21 doing better. 00:12:57.24\00:12:59.74 Praise God. Yeah. So what can you tell our guests that are 00:12:59.77\00:13:03.78 viewing this program right now that might help them live a 00:13:03.81\00:13:09.42 healthier life? 00:13:09.45\00:13:10.79 So what I would say to you is this: There are very simple 00:13:10.82\00:13:13.79 things that can have a profound impact on your life. First of 00:13:13.82\00:13:17.89 all you need to exercise. You need to walk for exercise. 00:13:17.93\00:13:22.30 Walk only, can't lift weights or... 00:13:22.33\00:13:25.30 I recommend walking as the main source of exercise. If people 00:13:25.33\00:13:29.27 want to lift weights as a way to have some weight bearing 00:13:29.30\00:13:34.78 exercise, I'm OK with that, but I don't want people lifting 00:13:34.81\00:13:38.91 heavy weights, I don't want people trying to get big and 00:13:38.95\00:13:41.88 bulky and muscular. But walking is the best exercise because it 00:13:41.92\00:13:46.92 uses all the organs of the body, it improves our circulation and 00:13:46.96\00:13:50.93 our circulation is so crucial to our health. You know, our 00:13:50.96\00:13:55.33 circulation has to get good blood to every cell in our body 00:13:55.36\00:14:00.10 in order for us to be healthy. And the way that we get good 00:14:00.14\00:14:03.20 blood is to eat good food. As we eat good food it improves 00:14:03.24\00:14:08.74 our blood and as we exercise it circulates that good blood to 00:14:08.78\00:14:12.85 every single cell in our body and then our bodies just start 00:14:12.88\00:14:15.65 to get better. They do what God intended for them to do in the 00:14:15.68\00:14:18.32 first place. 00:14:18.35\00:14:19.69 So you mentioned two important components. I'm thinking of a 00:14:19.72\00:14:24.96 third one. Can you read my mind? 00:14:24.99\00:14:28.33 The third one is they need to drink more water, because as you 00:14:28.36\00:14:31.93 drink more water it improves your circulation and like I just 00:14:31.97\00:14:35.30 said, you've got to circulate that good blood to every cell 00:14:35.34\00:14:38.37 if you want to be healthy. So you've got to do those things. 00:14:38.41\00:14:41.78 And then another crucial one that's really important. 00:14:41.81\00:14:44.31 The people are starting to miss more and more in our society 00:14:44.35\00:14:47.18 today is sleep. You've got to get good sleep and going to 00:14:47.22\00:14:50.82 to bed earlier and waking up earlier is better for us than 00:14:50.85\00:14:54.52 going to bed later and waking up later. 00:14:54.56\00:14:56.32 So when you eat good food, you mean buy corn-fed beef and 00:14:56.36\00:15:01.63 farm roasted chicken or whatever I don't even know anymore. 00:15:01.66\00:15:06.70 Yeah, I'm just kind of joking. 00:15:06.74\00:15:09.24 Yeah, I know. You're leading me to a certain answer. 00:15:09.27\00:15:10.64 We recommend a plant-based diet. A plant-based diet is what God 00:15:10.67\00:15:15.74 intended for our bodies to use to be healthy and when we eat a 00:15:15.78\00:15:20.18 plant-based diet, it puts our body in the right condition so 00:15:20.22\00:15:23.72 that it can heal and repair itself the way God intended 00:15:23.75\00:15:26.22 for it to do. 00:15:26.25\00:15:27.59 Amen, amen. I'm so glad to hear you say that because I got my 00:15:27.62\00:15:32.93 water right here, I've had a good lunch, all plant based. 00:15:32.96\00:15:37.93 Praise the Lord. 00:15:37.97\00:15:39.30 But I want to thank you because I know you're a busy guy and I 00:15:39.33\00:15:42.40 know you've got to go to a lecture right now. Yeah. 00:15:42.44\00:15:45.04 So God bless you brother. 00:15:45.07\00:15:46.41 You too. 00:15:46.44\00:15:47.78 I'll see you around. OK. 00:15:47.81\00:15:49.14 Now don't go away. We'll be right back. 00:15:49.18\00:15:50.81 Welcome back friends. Damon, how are you chaplain? 00:15:54.25\00:15:57.75 I'm doing well friend. 00:15:57.79\00:15:59.12 Would you like me to call you chaplain or pastor? 00:15:59.15\00:16:01.42 You can call me whatever. It doesn't matter. 00:16:01.46\00:16:03.79 Just don't call you late for supper. 00:16:03.83\00:16:05.46 That's right. Be there on time for lasagna. 00:16:05.49\00:16:09.50 We'll have that lasagna soon. You know we have an interesting 00:16:09.53\00:16:14.74 subject here. This lady, I understand, was ready to 00:16:14.77\00:16:20.28 high tail it. She was on overload. Too much information. 00:16:20.31\00:16:25.41 Didn't she want to leave? Can you talk to that? 00:16:25.45\00:16:29.12 Yeah. You know I saw the first Sunday when we gathered together 00:16:29.15\00:16:32.29 in a big circle. And she's new to the Adventist message, 00:16:32.32\00:16:37.16 she's newly married, she's come really wanting to support her 00:16:37.19\00:16:41.76 husband. Her health is a wreck. She's wanting to get healthy. 00:16:41.80\00:16:45.23 So like a lot of people, she hears about this lifestyle 00:16:45.27\00:16:47.90 program and I'm sure she's... She told me she's thinking 00:16:47.94\00:16:50.61 OK come here, Jacuzzi, hang out, eat and learn some stuff. So her 00:16:50.64\00:16:57.45 first night here when the doctors begin explaining the 00:16:57.48\00:17:01.58 regimen of this place, what we're going to put you into and 00:17:01.62\00:17:05.45 through 00:17:05.49\00:17:06.82 her eyes are getting this big. My second week with her, my 00:17:06.86\00:17:11.73 second counseling session she tells me the story. She said 00:17:11.76\00:17:14.13 after the first four days, I was ready to pack up and leave and 00:17:14.16\00:17:19.33 was telling my husband I can't do this. We've got to go. She 00:17:19.37\00:17:23.77 said you starve me down for three days, then they threw me 00:17:23.81\00:17:27.14 in this room and shocked me with heat and cold and there's no 00:17:27.18\00:17:31.18 time to sleep and all this information overload is coming. 00:17:31.21\00:17:35.75 She's about ready to check out on us. 00:17:35.78\00:17:38.72 I'm laughing because I came through the program in 2005 and 00:17:38.75\00:17:44.29 I can remember all that. I didn't know if I could do it 00:17:44.33\00:17:47.76 either but go ahead. 00:17:47.80\00:17:49.13 But here's what's great too is because when you get through 00:17:49.16\00:17:52.73 that first week, I know the second week... I always tell the 00:17:52.77\00:17:57.14 class. You're going to be a different group the second 00:17:57.17\00:18:00.14 Monday so let's just hang in there with one another. And sure 00:18:00.18\00:18:03.85 enough she makes it through that first week and she doesn't 00:18:03.88\00:18:07.15 realize... It's not so much that she's deciding to stay. Now that 00:18:07.18\00:18:11.92 second week is starting to work and she's having the capacity 00:18:11.95\00:18:14.36 to stay. She's feeling better. The mind is cleared up. She's 00:18:14.39\00:18:18.29 able to understand more and she's seeing the daylight at the 00:18:18.33\00:18:21.83 end of the tunnel and now she has some fortitude to stay. 00:18:21.86\00:18:25.57 She was wanting her coffee. 00:18:25.60\00:18:27.07 Oh yeah, she was going through all kind of withdrawals and all 00:18:27.10\00:18:31.31 kind of issues going on. That's a good point you bring up. 00:18:31.34\00:18:34.48 You're going through caffeine withdrawals, or maybe nicotine 00:18:34.51\00:18:37.55 withdrawals, sugar withdrawals, alcohol, all kind of stuff. 00:18:37.58\00:18:41.68 Beef. Yes. And they're crying out. They're going insane 00:18:41.72\00:18:46.55 a lot of them. But her testimony to me this week was I'm so 00:18:46.59\00:18:52.66 grateful I stayed. I'm so glad I've done this. 00:18:52.69\00:18:57.43 Oh man. Yeah. That says it all right there. 00:18:57.47\00:19:00.10 Oh sure, because she knows that the reality of her health and 00:19:00.14\00:19:04.84 her husband's health is at that point where they can make 00:19:04.87\00:19:07.64 changes now and do good or continue the road they're on and 00:19:07.68\00:19:13.15 it's a dismal future. 00:19:13.18\00:19:16.05 Exactly. Well she's here supporting him and so for her 00:19:16.08\00:19:21.39 to leave how in the world could he go home and share with his 00:19:21.42\00:19:26.76 wife or anybody with their spouse what they learned here 00:19:26.80\00:19:31.33 in 18 days. This is something I see in a lot of couples. 00:19:31.37\00:19:34.30 They're telling me man I wish my spouse was here, I wish my 00:19:34.34\00:19:37.57 husband, I wish my wife was here. A lot of them pony up that 00:19:37.61\00:19:41.71 little bit of extra because the reality is if you can get your 00:19:41.74\00:19:44.98 spouse to come as a companion it is going to help you in the 00:19:45.01\00:19:48.48 long run big time. 00:19:48.52\00:19:49.85 You know while we're on that subject if you need to be here 00:19:49.88\00:19:54.62 and you have a spouse that you want to bring, you call me 00:19:54.66\00:19:57.69 direct, I'll help you financially. That's a commitment 00:19:57.73\00:20:01.56 Yeah, because we do have that scholarship fund. 00:20:01.60\00:20:03.47 Right and a lot of them take advantage of that and when 00:20:03.50\00:20:07.10 the two see it together there's just no describing how these 00:20:07.14\00:20:10.94 couples will be sitting in my office and just bubbling with 00:20:10.97\00:20:14.88 how excited they are. The spiritual, yes, they see now 00:20:14.91\00:20:19.51 they got help from God, they see how conversion works even 00:20:19.55\00:20:23.18 with our physical side, even with our health. So it's this 00:20:23.22\00:20:26.39 total transformation. They're getting closer to God, they're 00:20:26.42\00:20:29.49 remedying their maybe even relational problems. 00:20:29.52\00:20:32.96 Their emotions. Sure one looks at the other and says I'm not 00:20:32.99\00:20:36.53 going to lose my husband or whatever the case may be. 00:20:36.56\00:20:39.53 This is true. So it's like this place is not just health, it's 00:20:39.57\00:20:42.97 emotions, it's relational, it affects our marriages, it 00:20:43.00\00:20:46.24 affects our health in such a total workover that people are 00:20:46.27\00:20:51.05 grateful to come through here and that money that they spend 00:20:51.08\00:20:53.72 you know for the price of a decent vacation maybe even a 00:20:53.75\00:20:57.89 cheap vacation, right, it's the greatest thing they could ever 00:20:57.92\00:21:01.16 do for themselves. 00:21:01.19\00:21:04.23 Amen. Thank you brother. Don't go away friends; 00:21:04.26\00:21:07.13 we'll be right back. 00:21:07.16\00:21:08.50 When you look at the health status of Americans today it's 00:21:09.13\00:21:12.50 alarming to see that 60 percent are either overweight or obese. 00:21:12.53\00:21:17.21 In addition, diseases such as type II diabetes, cancer and 00:21:21.98\00:21:25.71 heart disorders are the leading cause of so many complications 00:21:25.75\00:21:28.88 and deaths every year... 00:21:28.92\00:21:35.12 Could it have something to do with what we eat. After all 00:21:35.16\00:21:38.33 every one in four Americans visits a fast food restaurant 00:21:38.36\00:21:42.10 daily and with such easy access to quick fixes we tend to forget 00:21:42.13\00:21:46.87 the poor health values they actually offer. Maybe it's the 00:21:46.90\00:21:51.44 sedentary lifestyle and lack of exercise that we've become so 00:21:51.47\00:21:55.01 accustomed to as a media- dependent world. Whatever the 00:21:55.04\00:21:58.81 cause of these diseases, a solution has arrived. The 00:21:58.85\00:22:04.99 NEWSTART Lifestyle Center offers an enriching program where 00:22:05.02\00:22:08.22 patients can get a healing of mind, body and soul. The staff are dedicated to each 00:22:41.46\00:22:45.29 patient's success in the program and are always there to guide 00:22:45.33\00:22:48.86 advise and encourage. In addition to a healthy lifestyle, 00:22:48.90\00:22:52.93 NEWSTART also promotes a healthy exercise routine. 00:22:52.97\00:22:56.40 You're both in sequence, that's good. All right. 00:22:56.44\00:22:59.31 As part of the balanced program there is much opportunity to get 00:22:59.34\00:23:02.94 in the fair share of physical activity from utilizing our 00:23:02.98\00:23:06.25 fitness center to taking a stroll around the peaceful 00:23:06.28\00:23:09.18 grounds of Weimar. It's amazing what a new start can do for you. 00:23:09.22\00:23:13.49 Welcome to Weimar Institute Research. Glad to have you here 00:23:15.72\00:23:19.79 today and Eddie, this is kind of an exciting study that we're 00:23:19.83\00:23:22.50 about ready to discuss because this is talking about causes of 00:23:22.53\00:23:27.14 depression that are not thought to be reversible. And you know 00:23:27.17\00:23:31.47 Weimar Institute does treat depression. We have had a great 00:23:31.51\00:23:37.21 track record of success in those with the severest forms of 00:23:37.25\00:23:40.65 depression and anxiety here. But we're reversing the underlying 00:23:40.68\00:23:45.09 causes. You know, lack of exercise can be one of the 00:23:45.12\00:23:47.72 causes and poor nutrition and of course the good news is we 00:23:47.76\00:23:51.76 can change our exercise patterns and we can change what we're 00:23:51.79\00:23:56.77 eating. But these are causes that are a little more austere. 00:23:56.80\00:23:59.57 What were we studying here? 00:23:59.60\00:24:02.14 Well we're studying here what happens to those people that 00:24:02.17\00:24:05.94 have poor blood flow to the brain secondary to a stroke or 00:24:05.97\00:24:11.65 because of heart failure or some other condition that doesn't 00:24:11.68\00:24:15.58 send enough blood flow to the brain. We're studying what 00:24:15.62\00:24:18.69 happens to those people that aren't in mental health. 00:24:18.72\00:24:21.62 OK. Well obviously if our circulation to our brain is 00:24:21.66\00:24:25.36 impaired you would think it might affect the mental health. 00:24:25.39\00:24:27.83 And did you find a correlation there? 00:24:27.86\00:24:30.50 We found a very clear correlationship. Those people 00:24:30.53\00:24:34.30 that have that reduced blood flow to the brain actually on 00:24:34.34\00:24:38.34 average had moderate depression. This is in a community setting 00:24:38.37\00:24:43.65 program that was organized. 00:24:43.68\00:24:45.31 So the average person with a history of stroke or heart 00:24:45.35\00:24:48.78 failure by definition almost they're going to have some 00:24:48.82\00:24:51.82 depression. So they're moderate major depression. That's a 00:24:51.85\00:24:56.26 significant mental illness. So how many patients were involved 00:24:56.29\00:25:02.30 in this? 00:25:02.33\00:25:03.67 This was a big sample-5621 participants from all over the 00:25:03.70\00:25:08.87 world. 00:25:08.90\00:25:10.24 OK. And those with stroke and heart attack were a 00:25:10.27\00:25:15.01 smaller percentage. Is that right? 00:25:15.04\00:25:16.51 That's right. It was about four percent of all that population 00:25:16.54\00:25:20.22 had this problem. 00:25:20.25\00:25:22.08 As the underlying cause, one of the underlying causes. 00:25:22.12\00:25:25.35 That's right. There's a researcher by the name of 00:25:25.39\00:25:26.86 Gravitz. He had tried to answer the question of the chicken and 00:25:26.89\00:25:30.23 the egg. Does the depression cause reduced blood flow to the 00:25:30.26\00:25:33.90 brain or does the reduced blood flow to the brain cause the 00:25:33.93\00:25:36.87 depression, and he proposes that reduced blood flow to the brain 00:25:36.90\00:25:40.34 will trigger a depression. 00:25:40.37\00:25:42.17 Yeah. So that's what comes first the reduced blood flow and then 00:25:42.20\00:25:45.37 the depression. So these people with moderate depression went 00:25:45.41\00:25:52.68 to an eight-week educational program. Tell us a little bit 00:25:52.71\00:25:56.89 about that program. 00:25:56.92\00:25:58.25 We apply the principles of NEWSTART plus some cognitive 00:25:58.29\00:26:02.46 behavioral therapy principles and they were doing the exercise 00:26:02.49\00:26:06.53 the plant-based diet and all these healthy behaviors we took 00:26:06.56\00:26:10.10 a measurement again after the eight weeks. 00:26:10.13\00:26:12.63 And what did we find out? 00:26:12.67\00:26:14.44 We found out that their improvement was remarkable. 00:26:14.47\00:26:17.44 Ninety percent of those participants were able to 00:26:17.47\00:26:21.71 improve dramatically their mental health to the point that 00:26:21.74\00:26:24.75 finished with none or just mild depression. 00:26:24.78\00:26:27.68 That's amazing because this goes against what the medical thought 00:26:27.72\00:26:33.86 is, because you can't reverse a stroke. A stroke is a dead 00:26:33.89\00:26:38.73 portion of the brain. You can't bring that back. 00:26:38.76\00:26:40.46 And when you have heart failure due to advanced coronary artery 00:26:40.50\00:26:44.73 disease and the heart's not able to pump this isn't something 00:26:44.77\00:26:46.80 that you can you know put a magic wand on or a medicine and 00:26:46.84\00:26:49.97 get it to pump well. So these are thought to be irreversible 00:26:50.01\00:26:54.24 causes of depression. And we actually found out the opposite. 00:26:54.28\00:26:58.45 Ninety percent. I mean, that's better than you get in people 00:26:58.48\00:27:01.48 without heart disease and stroke by putting them on a medicine. 00:27:01.52\00:27:06.72 Some of the most potent medicines for antidepression 00:27:06.76\00:27:10.39 won't produce anywhere close to a ninety percent improvement 00:27:10.43\00:27:13.03 rate. 00:27:13.06\00:27:14.40 And because of the importance of this study, it actually came 00:27:14.43\00:27:18.63 out in the Journal of Neurology which happens to be the top 00:27:18.67\00:27:22.14 journal on this field. 00:27:22.17\00:27:24.17 OK. So Neurology is the top of all of the neurology journals 00:27:24.21\00:27:28.14 and it was published in the Journal of Neurology as well it 00:27:28.18\00:27:32.05 be. This is groundbreaking research.
