¤ ¤ 00:00:01.36\00:01:09.40 Hi friends and welcome to another edition of 00:01:09.43\00:01:14.87 NEWSTART Now. I'm your host Ron Gianonni. We have another 00:01:14.90\00:01:20.64 amazing story, a miracle in my mind. I want you to take a look 00:01:20.68\00:01:25.61 at when Louise first arrived. 00:01:25.65\00:01:30.99 I'm at the height of my unhealthiness in life. Just 00:01:31.02\00:01:34.06 recently diagnosed with type II diabetes, high blood pressure 00:01:34.12\00:01:40.66 for the last 10 years, obesity for the last probably 10-12 00:01:40.70\00:01:47.17 years and high cholesterol, high triglycerides. My chemistry is 00:01:47.20\00:01:53.24 not anywhere near where it needs to be. And then the limitedness 00:01:53.27\00:01:59.31 of my life from what has occurred to my body through 00:01:59.35\00:02:03.69 my own doing. What I want to see when I leave, and I will be 00:02:03.72\00:02:08.82 honest, a priority would be to break a certain level of weight 00:02:08.86\00:02:14.66 that I had not been able to get into. So as a starting point, I 00:02:14.70\00:02:20.47 want to eradicate my type II diabetes and I don't want to 00:02:20.50\00:02:25.81 have to deal with blood pressure medication. Those are my three 00:02:25.87\00:02:29.41 really main things and if those are done I believe that the rest 00:02:29.44\00:02:33.11 is by how I do it, it's all going to fall in line and 00:02:33.15\00:02:36.99 the chemistry will align itself as well. Yeah. 00:02:37.02\00:02:39.92 Well welcome back friends. Help me welcome Louise. Hello Ron. 00:02:39.95\00:02:41.82 Hello. I can't wait to do this interview. We don't have a lot 00:02:48.83\00:02:52.83 of time, but let's talk about because our viewers just 00:02:52.87\00:02:57.04 watched the first interview and now this being the second, 00:02:57.07\00:03:01.14 tell us about all the success. Go one by one. How's the weight? 00:03:01.18\00:03:07.12 Let's start right there. 00:03:07.15\00:03:08.52 Fourteen and a half pounds. 00:03:08.55\00:03:09.88 Fourteen and a half pounds in 16 days. Yeah, Yeah. 00:03:09.92\00:03:14.06 You think that's a miracle? 00:03:14.09\00:03:15.62 I think that's amazing. 00:03:15.69\00:03:17.19 At least. 00:03:17.23\00:03:18.56 I don't think I lost that much in my whole last session with 00:03:18.59\00:03:22.30 my weight loss program. So I'm very excited, very pleased. 00:03:22.33\00:03:26.00 OK, blood pressure? 00:03:26.03\00:03:27.37 Blood pressure, all within normal ranges. 00:03:27.40\00:03:30.11 And you're not taking medication? 00:03:30.14\00:03:31.67 Off all of my blood pressure meds and my statin drug is gone. 00:03:31.71\00:03:36.31 Good. Statin. What a joke. Yes. 00:03:36.34\00:03:39.71 What was your blood pressure when you were on blood pressure 00:03:39.78\00:03:43.05 meds? 00:03:43.08\00:03:44.42 I can recall going into the doctor's, sitting down for blood 00:03:44.45\00:03:49.12 pressure and getting a reading of 180 something over a lower 00:03:49.16\00:03:54.20 number that was not good as well. So. 00:03:54.23\00:03:57.17 Ninety five or over. 00:03:57.20\00:03:58.63 Over a hundred. Oh yeah. Not good at all. 00:03:58.70\00:04:01.84 Now what is it now. 00:04:01.87\00:04:04.24 Um, well. Let's see. Last night I believe I went to bed with a 00:04:04.27\00:04:06.91 111/68. 00:04:06.94\00:04:10.38 Without the medication. 00:04:10.41\00:04:12.85 Without any medication. 00:04:12.88\00:04:15.25 Oh. Friends can you just see what's going on here? How about 00:04:15.28\00:04:20.06 the diabetes? You're still diabetic I bet. 00:04:20.09\00:04:23.29 My sugar levels are coming down within range. I am not on the... 00:04:23.32\00:04:28.60 I've been off of the medication for diabetes as of the fourth 00:04:28.66\00:04:33.90 day in. 00:04:33.94\00:04:35.27 Four days in you got off the medication? 00:04:35.30\00:04:37.17 Off the medication. 00:04:37.21\00:04:38.54 Your doctor is Dr. K? 00:04:38.57\00:04:39.91 Dr. K, yes. 00:04:39.94\00:04:41.28 How'd I guess? 00:04:41.31\00:04:42.64 I don't know, yeah. 00:04:42.68\00:04:44.01 So you're off the... what were you taking? 00:04:44.05\00:04:48.28 I was taking metformin 500 mg I believe, morning and night, 00:04:48.35\00:04:52.95 twice a day, yes. 00:04:52.99\00:04:54.32 A thousand a day. 00:04:54.36\00:04:55.69 Yes and then they added on just for fun, I think, the glipizide 00:04:55.72\00:04:59.43 because it wasn't coming within range. I was still eating an 00:04:59.46\00:05:03.80 animal fat and dairy and vegetable diet which, so I was 00:05:03.83\00:05:08.57 really going in circles. 00:05:08.60\00:05:10.94 So now your blood sugars are normal, your blood pressure is 00:05:10.97\00:05:14.71 normal, you've lost weight. What else can you tell us, tell 00:05:14.74\00:05:19.51 our viewers that you've learned here and what you're going to 00:05:19.55\00:05:24.25 take home. 00:05:24.29\00:05:25.62 First of all, I am overwhelmed with the type of program that 00:05:25.65\00:05:30.13 it was in that the classes that we took, the 24 formal classes 00:05:30.16\00:05:35.26 that we took on different subjects including the 00:05:35.30\00:05:38.83 metabolism and nutrition, how we got diabetes in the first 00:05:38.87\00:05:44.64 place, not how to treat it, but how we got it in the first place 00:05:44.67\00:05:47.88 This really opened up my eyes and the fellow patients that are 00:05:47.91\00:05:51.11 here. It was a wealth of information and I'll never look 00:05:51.15\00:05:53.38 at food the same way again. I will never look at food. 00:05:53.42\00:05:55.62 I have a whole new appreciation for the food that God created 00:05:57.65\00:06:02.32 in the natural forms of plant based nutrition. So that's 00:06:02.36\00:06:06.03 awesome. I think the biggest thing in getting on a more 00:06:06.06\00:06:15.04 little more spiritual. We were nourished spiritually with the 00:06:15.07\00:06:19.74 reverend here. It was wonderful. The praying constantly with the 00:06:19.77\00:06:24.58 doctors, in between with our nutritionist, our exercise 00:06:24.61\00:06:29.92 supervisor. All those things. But I think we had talked 00:06:29.95\00:06:35.22 earlier and I had mentioned something about that we had been 00:06:35.26\00:06:38.73 made in the image of God and I feel that being here at NEWSTART 00:06:38.76\00:06:43.53 has helped me align myself to the will and image of God now. 00:06:43.57\00:06:47.54 Amen, amen. When was the last time out there in the world you 00:06:47.57\00:06:51.51 went to see a doctor and he prayed with you? No. It never 00:06:51.54\00:06:56.21 happened huh? Better yet when's the last time they've been on 00:06:56.24\00:07:01.18 time usually. I used to go to a cardiologist in San Jose. I'd be 00:07:01.22\00:07:05.45 in the waiting room for an hour and a half and then I'd go in 00:07:05.52\00:07:08.66 and see him and he'd go well you know your blood pressure's 00:07:08.69\00:07:12.86 high. Yes, I'm a little ticked off right now. So you know 00:07:12.89\00:07:17.80 these doctors here they're a special breed of character. They 00:07:17.83\00:07:22.64 love people. They love what they're doing. They're here to 00:07:22.70\00:07:27.48 help us and obviously you've been well treated. 00:07:27.51\00:07:31.98 Well there's a sincerity in the time that they do spend with 00:07:32.01\00:07:36.42 you. The kindness is shared. And at first I was thinking what 00:07:36.45\00:07:41.12 sort of a training program have these guys been put through 00:07:41.19\00:07:45.39 because they're just really fantastic, you know. But you 00:07:45.43\00:07:49.63 know what, they're all different and they're all 00:07:49.66\00:07:51.80 unique but they are all just really tuned in to just sharing 00:07:51.83\00:07:56.84 God's love and his plan for you. And treating yourself the way 00:07:56.87\00:08:01.84 God laid it out for us to be treated, you know. To take 00:08:01.88\00:08:05.61 advantage of what he puts before us and just be healthier and 00:08:05.68\00:08:09.18 heal and what an amazing thing that is. 00:08:09.22\00:08:14.32 How fortunate to have Damon here and you know we just 00:08:14.36\00:08:18.09 interviewed Damon and he's so thrilled with the results in all 00:08:18.13\00:08:24.90 of our guests. Couple of people are just kind of not where they 00:08:24.93\00:08:31.64 want to be but they're still thrilled. I want to ask you 00:08:31.67\00:08:34.81 about Michelle Irwin. She is our teacher for the cooking classes. 00:08:34.84\00:08:40.02 What'd you think of some of those recipes she put together? 00:08:40.05\00:08:45.42 I'm excited to get home. So when I get home, we're going to my 00:08:45.45\00:08:48.62 daughter's for dinner. She cooks as you would have us cook. 00:08:48.66\00:08:54.20 Oh good. Oh yeah. And Friday morning she's picking me up and 00:08:54.23\00:08:57.47 we're going to the grocery store and that'll probably be after 00:08:57.50\00:09:00.70 I've emptied out my entire pantry and refrigerator. 00:09:00.74\00:09:04.11 And I feel really very excited about the menus that she placed 00:09:04.17\00:09:09.84 out before us that we had a hands on to be able to create. 00:09:09.88\00:09:15.55 Guys and girls at the tables. some of us not so experienced 00:09:15.58\00:09:19.69 some of us a little more but it all came together and we 00:09:19.72\00:09:23.43 realized we can do this, you know. The cook books based on 00:09:23.46\00:09:27.63 the menus from the cafeteria, what a great tool. I've already 00:09:27.66\00:09:31.77 read through and starred and made notes on certain ones 00:09:31.80\00:09:35.40 that I feel in control to be able to do. And given time, I 00:09:35.47\00:09:39.04 don't know I might give Michelle a run for her money. 00:09:39.07\00:09:42.18 But she's fantastic. 00:09:42.21\00:09:44.21 I want to thank you for coming here and being able to speak 00:09:44.25\00:09:47.28 with us. 00:09:47.32\00:09:48.65 Thank you so much. 00:09:48.68\00:09:50.02 And we'll be talking fairly soon Don't go away. Dr. Kuninobo is 00:09:50.05\00:09:54.16 is up next. 00:09:54.19\00:09:56.46 Welcome back friends. Dr. K how are you sir? 00:09:56.49\00:10:02.43 Great, how you doing Ron? 00:10:02.46\00:10:03.80 I'm doing good. First I want to thank you for coming here and 00:10:03.83\00:10:07.87 being on the set because I do know you're a busy guy. You know 00:10:07.90\00:10:11.91 I haven't met a doctor yet who isn't busy. We've got doctors 00:10:11.94\00:10:15.78 flying all over the world. Dr. Nedley, doctor this and that. 00:10:15.81\00:10:19.61 They fly to five different countries in six days. 00:10:19.65\00:10:23.42 Boy, I'm glad I'm not one of those. I'm right here. 00:10:23.45\00:10:27.16 You're flying from one building to another. 00:10:27.19\00:10:29.86 Well that's true. 00:10:29.89\00:10:31.76 So, you know, I want to get right into this subject of 00:10:31.79\00:10:37.30 weight loss. You know, I was pretty taken that she lost as 00:10:37.37\00:10:43.71 much weight and give us some history about women versus men 00:10:43.74\00:10:48.64 as far as weight loss. And I know that isn't the reason a lot 00:10:48.68\00:10:53.01 of people come here. They've taken all these medications, but 00:10:53.08\00:10:56.85 when they start losing weight and getting off medications at 00:10:56.89\00:11:00.66 the same time and tell us a little bit about that. 00:11:00.69\00:11:03.59 Well I think the weight is important for a lot of people. 00:11:03.63\00:11:05.69 In fact, I have many people who come here and that is one of 00:11:05.73\00:11:08.66 their first things they write down, I want to lose weight. 00:11:08.70\00:11:11.57 Yeah. And improve diabetes or high blood pressure, what have 00:11:11.60\00:11:14.67 you as in the case of Louise. But it's interesting that there 00:11:14.70\00:11:21.84 seems to be a little difference between the physiology of men 00:11:21.88\00:11:26.48 and women. For better or for worse, (why is that?) ladies 00:11:26.51\00:11:28.85 please don't shoot because I didn't create it this way, but 00:11:28.88\00:11:32.55 women do seem to have a harder time losing weight and we've had 00:11:32.59\00:11:36.02 you know some of the biggest losers here are usually men and 00:11:36.06\00:11:41.50 not usually women for some reason. And I know that most 00:11:41.53\00:11:48.14 women out there could 00:11:48.17\00:11:49.50 probably vouch for that, that they have a harder time. 00:11:49.54\00:11:50.87 Now she lost 14-1/2 pounds. 00:11:50.91\00:11:53.68 She actually was, yes, she did marvelously. I mean she was not 00:11:53.71\00:11:59.55 like most women who have just five pounds after working really 00:11:59.58\00:12:03.89 hard, seven maybe, maybe 10. Yeah, 14-1/2 pounds. She did 00:12:03.92\00:12:08.06 really, really well. 00:12:08.09\00:12:09.42 I guess. And we've seen women here much larger that hardly 00:12:09.46\00:12:14.76 lose any. Here she comes. She was really thrilled about this. 00:12:14.80\00:12:18.90 Yeah, but more important than the weight lost was body 00:12:18.93\00:12:22.27 composition, and we don't have numbers here on that but we 00:12:22.30\00:12:25.67 usually measure people too. I remember her numbers are pretty 00:12:25.71\00:12:27.84 astounding, how many inches she lost. I think it's an important 00:12:27.88\00:12:31.41 concept for viewers at home to work and to try and get 00:12:31.45\00:12:34.45 themselves better is body composition. And I think that 00:12:34.48\00:12:38.82 your relating to somebody that may be larger we've had in the 00:12:38.85\00:12:43.86 past who maybe didn't lost as much weight or any weight and 00:12:43.89\00:12:47.40 it can be very discouraging. But the health on the inside is 00:12:47.43\00:12:52.00 equally important to how things look on the outside. Amen. And 00:12:52.03\00:12:55.57 so for example I've thinking of one person in particular who had 00:12:55.60\00:13:00.31 trouble losing weight but we know that this person got 00:13:00.34\00:13:03.81 healthier because the inches got better. And that's really 00:13:03.85\00:13:06.75 important because muscle does weight more than fat. So if you 00:13:06.78\00:13:11.29 you come to your program or to a lifestyle change and you've 00:13:11.32\00:13:14.22 really let yourself go and there's not a lot of muscle 00:13:14.26\00:13:17.23 there because you've been very sedentary and when you start 00:13:17.26\00:13:19.46 working out and the muscle starts building, that weighs 00:13:19.49\00:13:21.33 more than the fat you're burning so you may not see the change 00:13:21.36\00:13:24.07 on the scale when you look at it in the morning but you are 00:13:24.10\00:13:27.14 going to start noticing it in your clothes. 00:13:27.17\00:13:28.60 That's what's amazing, just amazing. We have a story of a 00:13:28.64\00:13:34.88 lady who lost four dress sizes here; didn't lose any weight. 00:13:34.91\00:13:39.01 Correct. Yeah, Dr. Lukens loves to tell that story. 00:13:39.05\00:13:41.28 He loves to tell that story and she just went like this you know 00:13:41.32\00:13:44.09 But her weight didn't change at all? 00:13:44.12\00:13:46.09 No and I say the same thing about Louise. She lost 14-1/2 00:13:46.12\00:13:51.16 pounds but if we had weighed her the other method like in the 00:13:51.19\00:13:55.96 water, holding her breath it would have been a lot more 00:13:56.00\00:13:59.83 dramatic. And I myself, when I came through I lost 22 pounds 00:13:59.87\00:14:05.64 For a guy that was pretty good but many people will lose more 00:14:05.67\00:14:08.88 than that. 00:14:08.91\00:14:10.25 And I've lost a lot for my height as well. 00:14:10.28\00:14:11.78 You are, I mean you have? 00:14:11.81\00:14:13.78 I'm about 40 pounds lighter than when I was at my highest. 00:14:13.82\00:14:16.22 Really? Through the principles of the NEWSTART program. 00:14:16.25\00:14:19.55 Was it since you been here? 00:14:19.59\00:14:21.09 No, I started the principles before coming here. 00:14:21.12\00:14:24.53 OK. But God finished up after I arrived here a year and a 00:14:24.56\00:14:28.00 half ago. Yeah. Never felt better in my life. 00:14:28.03\00:14:33.23 Good, good job. By the way, before I forget, what about her 00:14:33.27\00:14:39.61 diabetes and high blood pressure What's going on with that? 00:14:39.64\00:14:42.71 OK, so her diabetes, vastly better. She came, if I remember 00:14:42.74\00:14:47.42 correctly, on two medications and we were able to take her off 00:14:47.45\00:14:51.52 of those medications and her blood sugar was looking good. 00:14:51.55\00:14:54.42 And her blood pressure-she was still having trouble controlling 00:14:54.46\00:14:59.43 her blood pressure on the medicine she was on. By the time 00:14:59.46\00:15:01.26 she left her blood pressure was normal without medication. 00:15:01.30\00:15:05.03 So if she continues on the path she'll do very, very well. 00:15:05.07\00:15:08.87 So we've got a few seconds left. What could you tell our viewers 00:15:08.90\00:15:13.68 right now that are on medication they're overweight they have 00:15:13.71\00:15:18.31 high blood pressure? 00:15:18.35\00:15:19.68 Definitely find a way to get to a lifestyle program like the 00:15:19.71\00:15:23.22 NEWSTART program. 00:15:23.25\00:15:24.59 Amen, and they're all over the country right? 00:15:24.62\00:15:26.15 There are programs all over the place. Of course we think 00:15:26.19\00:15:29.59 NEWSTART's pretty special. 00:15:29.62\00:15:30.96 Well we do. 00:15:30.99\00:15:32.33 Of course, but find help and get on a lifestyle program that 00:15:32.36\00:15:37.77 includes a whole food, plant based diet and preferably one 00:15:37.80\00:15:42.37 that has God as a component in it as well. 00:15:42.40\00:15:45.67 Amen. You know we do have a lot of fine lifestyle centers around 00:15:45.71\00:15:51.28 but and I refer people to these centers if they can't make it 00:15:51.31\00:15:56.95 here. Nonetheless I want to thank you. God bless you. 00:15:56.99\00:16:00.79 Your welcome. God bless you Ron. 00:16:00.82\00:16:02.16 And we'll see you around. Don't go away. We'll be right back. 00:16:02.19\00:16:07.80 Every year in America there are over one million deaths because 00:16:07.83\00:16:11.17 of type II diabetes and chronic obesity. This includes heart 00:16:11.20\00:16:14.67 attacks and strokes. That's six and a half 747s crashing 00:16:14.70\00:16:18.24 every day. 00:16:18.27\00:16:19.61 What's even more surprising is that the fix is easy. It's your 00:16:19.64\00:16:23.55 lifestyle. Wouldn't it be nice if you could actually add 00:16:23.58\00:16:26.61 quality years to your life rather than dying one organ at 00:16:26.65\00:16:29.65 a time? Obesity and diabetes are the cause of over a million 00:16:29.68\00:16:33.52 deaths per year. Most diseases are reversible because most 00:16:33.56\00:16:38.13 diseases are lifestyle diseases especially type II diabetes and 00:16:38.16\00:16:42.43 chronic obesity. The NEWSTART programs are 00:17:00.75\00:17:05.55 simple and effective. 00:17:05.59\00:17:08.66 Welcome back friends. Damon how are you? 00:17:08.69\00:17:11.63 I'm doing fine my friend. 00:17:11.66\00:17:13.29 You know, before we begin I've just got to let the viewers know 00:17:13.33\00:17:16.67 that this is NEWSTART Now and many people call me and they 00:17:16.70\00:17:22.20 go well why can't I do NEWSTART at home? All I need to know is 00:17:22.24\00:17:26.88 what to eat and what to do. I go well wait a minute. It's far 00:17:26.91\00:17:30.71 more involved and that's where you come in. 00:17:30.75\00:17:34.15 Right, right. 00:17:34.18\00:17:36.85 I have noticed since you've been here, if I may say, that our 00:17:36.89\00:17:40.79 attendance for morning worship is greater than it's ever been. 00:17:40.82\00:17:45.59 I want to get right back into Louise now and talk about her 00:17:45.63\00:17:51.27 experience here and how you've enjoyed her company. 00:17:51.30\00:17:55.84 Ah, yeah, Miss Louise, she's been great. She's one of these 00:17:55.87\00:17:58.27 ones that you want to get a hold of. The first counseling session 00:17:58.31\00:18:03.18 I had with her and the second one it kind of deepened, but she 00:18:03.21\00:18:06.45 told me, she said there's something here that I can't 00:18:06.48\00:18:10.09 quite get my mind around that's very spiritual. So she's 00:18:10.12\00:18:14.76 conveying this to me. So the second counseling session she's 00:18:14.79\00:18:18.33 like this is spiritual. She got the spiritual connections. She 00:18:18.36\00:18:23.73 is a very good Catholic woman the magodai, the image of 00:18:23.77\00:18:26.97 of God she was telling me I realize now that this health 00:18:27.00\00:18:30.77 message is mostly about restoring the lost image of God 00:18:30.81\00:18:34.68 in man. And I've never heard anyone tell me that in 17 00:18:34.71\00:18:39.31 months. So she's grasping the deeper concept of why we do 00:18:39.35\00:18:43.95 health here. 00:18:43.99\00:18:45.32 Praise God. That's wonderful. I'm sure you helped that along. 00:18:45.35\00:18:48.72 Oh yeah, she looked at me one day; this really touched my 00:18:48.76\00:18:54.16 heart, from a pastor's point of view we want this evangelism 00:18:54.20\00:18:59.03 to kind of come out of the health message and she was 00:18:59.07\00:19:03.07 looking on my wall and I have a picture of Jesus with the woman 00:19:03.10\00:19:06.37 at the well. And she looked at it and she was just sitting 00:19:06.41\00:19:09.38 there staring at it, she was looking contemplatively at it, 00:19:09.41\00:19:12.71 and she says you know what I see in that picture. She says I 00:19:12.75\00:19:15.95 see the Catholic church as that woman and I see Jesus as the 00:19:15.98\00:19:22.86 Adventist church reaching out to Catholics. And I just thought 00:19:22.89\00:19:27.53 that that was such a powerful statement because she perceived 00:19:27.96\00:19:31.93 it was that and that we are trying to help our brothers and 00:19:31.97\00:19:35.14 sisters of other faiths. 00:19:35.17\00:19:36.67 Oh, absolutely, yeah. I'm glad to hear you say that because 00:19:36.71\00:19:40.61 a lot of folks, again, when they call in I'm generally the guy 00:19:40.64\00:19:44.68 who answers the phone for the NEWSTART program. They tell me 00:19:44.71\00:19:49.58 well I'm Buddhist or I'm a Muslim or I'm Catholic or 00:19:49.62\00:19:54.26 Jewish. I go you know God doesn't care what religion you 00:19:54.29\00:19:59.03 are. He's calling all of us to come home. And so being here, 00:19:59.06\00:20:05.20 even though we are Seventh-day Adventist, I have never heard an 00:20:05.23\00:20:11.34 unkind word about our staff. In most cases, people say so this 00:20:11.37\00:20:18.38 is somewhat like heaven. You know. 00:20:18.41\00:20:19.75 Yeah, she had many kind words to say. You know, even about 00:20:19.78\00:20:25.15 the Adventist literature. Ellen White's writings on health. She 00:20:25.19\00:20:30.06 recognized that. She said that her feeling of Ellen White was 00:20:30.09\00:20:33.03 God sent someone to the world foreseeing in the future what 00:20:33.19\00:20:36.50 health would be like toward the end of time and she recognized 00:20:36.90\00:20:40.27 that this woman had a message, a gift from God, to proclaim 00:20:40.30\00:20:44.57 a message of health, to bring healing to a world when it was 00:20:44.61\00:20:47.34 needed the most. This is all coming from someone that is not 00:20:47.38\00:20:49.91 familiar with the Adventist message. 00:20:49.94\00:20:52.45 Isn't that amazing. So she's... sounds like the Holy Spirit's 00:20:52.48\00:20:57.32 in there somewhere. 00:20:57.35\00:20:58.69 She sees the love aspect of this health. The desire of a church 00:20:58.72\00:21:02.29 wanting to see people whole and stop dying and feel better and 00:21:02.32\00:21:07.63 then the spiritual component of it. She grasped that right off 00:21:07.66\00:21:10.10 the bat. 00:21:10.13\00:21:11.47 Oh wow. That's so good to here. Well she's such a lovely lady. 00:21:11.50\00:21:15.54 You know, you call her Miss Brown. 00:21:15.57\00:21:17.44 But being from Texas don't you call every... 00:21:17.47\00:21:21.18 Everybody's miss. I call my wife Miss Mary, yeah, Miss Mary. 00:21:21.21\00:21:26.48 Don't call me Miss Ron. I might take offense. Well 00:21:26.51\00:21:33.32 anything you might want to add about Miss Brown? 00:21:33.36\00:21:36.62 Miss Brown, Yeah. I would like to say she is a very wonderful 00:21:36.66\00:21:41.50 lady. She had this excitement and enthusiasm. She's going to 00:21:41.53\00:21:45.97 go home and work the program. You know she lost a lot of 00:21:46.00\00:21:48.64 weight here and you could tell in her face. I love... I took a 00:21:48.67\00:21:51.84 picture this afternoon. I said this is you when you got here. 00:21:51.87\00:21:53.84 I said this does not look like you now. I can see... and she 00:21:53.88\00:21:57.85 said I know. She said I can see my face. She goes, you know 00:21:57.88\00:22:00.92 for a while the only place I could look at my face that 00:22:00.95\00:22:03.69 wasn't overweight was my nose. She said but now I can see my 00:22:03.72\00:22:07.72 face coming back. And I thought well that's awful cute and 00:22:07.76\00:22:11.03 wonderful, you know. 00:22:11.06\00:22:12.39 We've run out of time. I want to thank you brother. We'll talk 00:22:12.43\00:22:15.56 again I know. Don't got away folks. We'll be right back. 00:22:15.60\00:22:20.74 Weimar Institute not only treats patients with significant 00:22:20.77\00:22:28.14 chronic diseases but also does research on thousands of 00:22:28.18\00:22:33.55 individuals. And this research is getting published in peer 00:22:33.58\00:22:37.69 review scientific publications. Now many people don't realize 00:22:37.72\00:22:42.46 that the NEWSTART program is also the home of Weimar College. 00:22:42.49\00:22:47.50 And Weimar College is a pre- medical institution, nursing 00:22:47.53\00:22:52.53 program, business program, theology, education; also music, 00:22:52.57\00:22:56.91 psychology is taught here. And this is a higher education 00:22:56.94\00:23:01.34 program that actually is above many bachelors programs because 00:23:01.38\00:23:08.72 for the type of research that is done and published by students 00:23:08.75\00:23:12.32 and professors here. One of our professors today who actually 00:23:12.35\00:23:16.52 heads our research department at Weimar College is Dr. Eddy 00:23:16.56\00:23:21.80 Ramirez. Dr. Eddy, glad to have you here today. 00:23:21.83\00:23:24.63 Thank you for the invitation. 00:23:24.67\00:23:26.00 All right. Well this was a study that was done by who, now who 00:23:26.03\00:23:30.01 was involved in research? 00:23:30.04\00:23:31.37 Students were involved in this study. There were actually two 00:23:31.41\00:23:35.48 students in this study. This was published in the Journal of 00:23:35.51\00:23:40.25 Biological Psychiatry. We're studying a little bit about 00:23:40.28\00:23:42.75 emotional intelligence. 00:23:42.78\00:23:44.92 OK, well emotional intelligence of your ability to manage your 00:23:44.95\00:23:49.12 emotions, to understand your emotions and the emotions of 00:23:49.16\00:23:53.33 others and respond to those emotions in a healthy way. 00:23:53.36\00:23:56.53 And we have found out, Dr. Ramirez, that emotional 00:23:56.56\00:24:00.70 intelligence has more to do with your future success and 00:24:00.74\00:24:04.14 happiness than other measurements. It's even more 00:24:04.17\00:24:07.24 important than your IQ. And of course these were people coming 00:24:07.28\00:24:12.01 because of depression. They had significant depression and 00:24:12.05\00:24:15.28 anxiety and how many people were involved in this study? 00:24:15.32\00:24:17.95 This was a big sample, 5621 people in the sample. 00:24:17.99\00:24:24.39 Wow! And was this all from North America or were there 00:24:24.43\00:24:25.99 other countries involved? 00:24:26.03\00:24:27.60 This is worldwide. Four continents were represented in 00:24:27.63\00:24:32.00 this sample. 00:24:32.03\00:24:33.37 OK and so at the beginning of the data analysis they were 00:24:33.40\00:24:38.61 coming to a program. This was an eight week program. So this 00:24:38.64\00:24:42.71 wasn't actually done at Weimar Institute but it was done in 00:24:42.74\00:24:46.58 those countries, a lot of different satellite sites; may 00:24:46.61\00:24:49.95 have been churches or health centers or mental health clinics 00:24:49.98\00:24:54.79 where this program would have been run. So they were coming 00:24:54.82\00:24:58.59 because of their need and depression and anxiety. It was 00:24:58.63\00:25:02.43 an educational program and this educational program included 00:25:02.46\00:25:06.13 what? What types of things might they have been experiencing? 00:25:06.17\00:25:08.64 So basically the NEWSTART principles plus a mental 00:25:08.67\00:25:15.21 education focus on the principles of cognitive behavioral therapy. 00:25:15.24\00:25:20.85 OK. So you have NEWSTART plus cognitive behavioral therapy. 00:25:20.88\00:25:24.59 This gets into your thoughts, emotional intelligence is tied 00:25:24.62\00:25:27.39 to our thoughts because it's actually our thoughts that cause 00:25:27.42\00:25:30.79 our emotions and behavior. And that's actually good news 00:25:30.83\00:25:34.10 because we can change our thoughts into what's more 00:25:34.13\00:25:36.73 rational and true and then our emotions and behavior can also 00:25:36.77\00:25:40.54 improve. And so as a result of this... I mean, was this an 00:25:40.57\00:25:44.91 intense program where they were there all day for eight week? 00:25:44.94\00:25:47.38 Once a week for two hours for eight weeks 00:25:47.41\00:25:51.01 OK, so not a lot really, just once a week, two hours of 00:25:51.05\00:25:54.68 education and they would watch a little DVD and they would also 00:25:54.72\00:25:59.39 have a little group health coaching type session and so 00:25:59.42\00:26:03.63 about a total of 16 hours invested and what happened at 00:26:03.66\00:26:07.66 the end of the eight weeks? 00:26:07.70\00:26:09.03 As a result of that, by the end of that program their emotional 00:26:09.06\00:26:12.20 intelligence was above the average emotional intelligence 00:26:12.23\00:26:16.27 of the population. 00:26:16.30\00:26:17.64 They came in below average and they ended up above average. 00:26:17.67\00:26:21.04 In fact, I'm looking at the statistics here and 46 percent 00:26:21.08\00:26:26.11 were below average and at the end only 23 percent were below 00:26:26.15\00:26:30.09 average so over half of them went to above average that were 00:26:30.12\00:26:34.19 below and then there were 56 percent that were somewhat above 00:26:34.22\00:26:40.63 average and a total of 20 percent were in the top tier of 00:26:40.66\00:26:44.93 the nation now as a result of going through this program. 00:26:44.97\00:26:48.80 How much of a shift was there total? 00:26:48.84\00:26:51.57 The switch was about 30 percent, the ones that were able 00:26:51.61\00:26:57.41 to reach that very high level of EQ. 00:26:57.45\00:27:00.35 OK about 30 percent in the total emotional intelligence 00:27:00.38\00:27:04.49 scale went up by I think eight points. Is that right? 00:27:04.52\00:27:07.26 That's right, eight points on average. 00:27:07.29\00:27:08.99 Yeah, actually almost nine points and that's a whole 00:27:09.02\00:27:11.46 standard deviation. Significant improvement in their future 00:27:11.49\00:27:15.06 success and happiness just by going to this eight week program 00:27:15.10\00:27:19.43 Depression and anxiety recovery. 00:27:19.47\00:27:21.80 Thanks for joining us on NEWSTART Now and I hope you 00:27:21.84\00:27:26.17 also can improve your emotional intelligence. 00:27:26.21\00:27:30.85 Well friends, that's it for today but join us next week for 00:27:30.88\00:27:36.45 another episode.
