Hi, friends, and welcome
00:01:12.93\00:01:14.27
to another
edition of NEWSTART Now.
00:01:14.30\00:01:17.04
I want you to help me
welcome Michael Howard.
00:01:17.07\00:01:20.08
Now, here's what's
unique about Michael.
00:01:20.11\00:01:22.78
Most people come
here to lose weight,
00:01:22.81\00:01:25.11
Michael's comes here,
he wants to gain weight.
00:01:25.15\00:01:27.88
And of course, he did.
00:01:27.92\00:01:30.22
Massive amounts of pounds.
00:01:30.25\00:01:32.82
But you're going to
hear that in just a minute.
00:01:32.85\00:01:34.72
Let's take a look at
when he first arrived.
00:01:34.76\00:01:36.99
I'm here for lot
of stomach problems
00:01:39.69\00:01:42.30
that I've been having.
00:01:42.33\00:01:45.13
Back when I was
about 25 years old,
00:01:45.17\00:01:49.20
everything just started to
go wrong, and I was eating,
00:01:49.24\00:01:55.14
you know, not very
good my whole life.
00:01:55.18\00:01:57.08
And then, recently I
tried to make the changes
00:01:57.11\00:02:00.15
to get a better diet.
00:02:00.18\00:02:02.68
It just hasn't
been going too well.
00:02:02.72\00:02:05.15
I couldn't
really figure out why.
00:02:05.19\00:02:08.02
I was just slowly deteriorating,
00:02:08.06\00:02:09.56
not being able to absorb
the food that I was eating,
00:02:09.59\00:02:12.43
and, you know, losing weight
and those kinds of things.
00:02:12.46\00:02:16.93
I think stress was
a big thing for me,
00:02:16.97\00:02:20.64
especially just not having God
for most of my life, you know,
00:02:20.67\00:02:24.04
I was very stressed out,
00:02:24.07\00:02:25.81
and just can't handle the things
00:02:25.84\00:02:27.68
that I wouldn't know.
00:02:27.71\00:02:29.91
Really, a dependence
on God in all things,
00:02:29.94\00:02:33.35
more than just help, you know,
00:02:33.38\00:02:34.85
just everything from
the mental to the spiritual,
00:02:34.88\00:02:40.06
especially when
it comes to exercise,
00:02:40.09\00:02:42.36
I'm definitely have
not been good about that.
00:02:42.39\00:02:45.93
Welcome back, friends.
00:02:48.36\00:02:49.70
Help me welcome
Michael. How are you, brother?
00:02:49.73\00:02:52.10
Feeling good.
00:02:52.13\00:02:53.47
You know, I just
said you've gained
00:02:53.50\00:02:56.10
massive amounts of poundage.
00:02:56.14\00:02:58.47
How much weight
did you can gain?
00:02:58.51\00:02:59.97
It's about two
pounds. About two pounds.
00:03:00.01\00:03:01.94
Well, I get little carried
away when I think of poundage,
00:03:01.98\00:03:06.01
but, you know,
that is significant
00:03:06.05\00:03:09.65
because you had been struggling
with weight loss, and you're...
00:03:09.68\00:03:13.29
How much do you weigh totally?
00:03:13.32\00:03:15.62
When I first
came, I was struggling
00:03:15.66\00:03:17.69
between 100-102 pounds or so.
00:03:17.73\00:03:21.90
Now I weigh about 105-106.
00:03:21.93\00:03:24.90
Whiles, you may have
gained more than that.
00:03:24.93\00:03:27.24
It's possible, yeah.
00:03:27.27\00:03:28.60
But, you know, we
talked about this briefly
00:03:28.64\00:03:30.84
before the interview started
00:03:30.87\00:03:33.27
that that's
probably muscle mass.
00:03:33.31\00:03:36.61
And tell us how you
did on your treadmill,
00:03:36.64\00:03:39.35
the first one
and the second one.
00:03:39.38\00:03:41.22
Well, the first one,
I definitely struggled.
00:03:41.25\00:03:43.08
I never got
passed the walking speed.
00:03:43.12\00:03:46.92
But the second time
around, I was actually running,
00:03:46.96\00:03:48.99
and I did about three
and a half more minutes
00:03:49.02\00:03:52.13
on the treadmill.
00:03:52.16\00:03:53.50
That's significant. Yeah.
00:03:53.53\00:03:55.26
So you're getting stronger,
00:03:55.30\00:03:57.20
your heart's getting stronger.
00:03:57.23\00:03:58.60
Yes.
00:03:58.63\00:03:59.97
How about your attitude?
00:04:00.00\00:04:02.54
A lot more positive.
00:04:02.57\00:04:05.61
Yeah.
00:04:05.64\00:04:06.98
You see that there's some hope.
00:04:07.01\00:04:09.18
Oh, yeah. Yeah.
00:04:09.21\00:04:12.11
And so how is that...
00:04:12.15\00:04:13.92
How has your
attitude changed from...
00:04:13.95\00:04:16.72
Were you a little
depressed when you got here?
00:04:16.75\00:04:18.79
Yeah, you know, I was struggling
00:04:18.82\00:04:20.22
with different
problems, diseases, health,
00:04:20.26\00:04:22.92
all these kinds of things.
00:04:22.96\00:04:24.29
You know, it puts you in
a depressive mood, you know,
00:04:24.33\00:04:26.36
you think there's no
way out, but, you know,
00:04:26.39\00:04:29.53
even if I'm still struggling now
00:04:29.56\00:04:31.47
with the health problems,
00:04:31.50\00:04:33.30
I mean I'm so much more
positive about it, you know,
00:04:33.34\00:04:36.04
just knowing that, you
know, God can make a way.
00:04:36.07\00:04:39.54
Amen, amen.
00:04:39.57\00:04:41.24
You know, you just
answered a lot of what cures us
00:04:41.28\00:04:44.81
when we come here.
00:04:44.85\00:04:46.38
It's having the right attitude,
00:04:46.41\00:04:48.95
you know, an attitude of...
00:04:48.98\00:04:51.05
Coin a phrase, gratitude,
00:04:51.09\00:04:53.46
and thanking God
for what we have.
00:04:53.49\00:04:56.52
But if we keep
beating ourselves up,
00:04:56.56\00:04:58.09
"Oh, I'm dying.
I'm this, I'm that."
00:04:58.13\00:05:00.66
Well, okay, the body
will accommodate to it.
00:05:00.70\00:05:04.47
But I like the change.
00:05:04.50\00:05:06.43
I like that
you've gained weight.
00:05:06.47\00:05:08.54
Now who is your
doctor during this event?
00:05:08.57\00:05:10.74
Dr. Kuninobo.
00:05:10.77\00:05:12.11
Kuninobo, okay.
00:05:12.14\00:05:14.41
And was he a big help?
00:05:14.44\00:05:17.55
Oh, yeah.
00:05:17.58\00:05:19.05
Yeah... He's so
friendly and kind, you know,
00:05:19.08\00:05:22.25
it just really helps
in that certain setting,
00:05:22.28\00:05:24.82
you know, when he's trying
to tell you medical things.
00:05:24.85\00:05:28.86
Friendly and kind, which
I see that's kind of unique,
00:05:28.89\00:05:33.53
not that the doctors
I go to haven't been,
00:05:33.56\00:05:36.26
but some could be,
you know, a little testy.
00:05:36.30\00:05:39.07
But that's
because they're busy men.
00:05:39.10\00:05:41.80
That's true. Yes.
00:05:41.84\00:05:43.17
But our doctors here on
campus really, really love
00:05:43.20\00:05:46.71
what they're
doing, and take it extra.
00:05:46.74\00:05:49.68
They go the extra
mile with our guests.
00:05:49.71\00:05:52.95
Yeah.
00:05:52.98\00:05:54.32
And what do you
think of the food here?
00:05:54.35\00:05:55.78
Oh, it's amazing.
00:05:55.82\00:05:57.15
Amazing. Amazing.
00:05:57.19\00:05:58.52
How so?
00:05:58.55\00:05:59.89
The flavors are just, you know,
00:05:59.92\00:06:01.46
beyond anything
I've ever had before.
00:06:01.49\00:06:03.26
And, you know, a lot of
people are scared of vegan food,
00:06:03.29\00:06:06.93
but the way they do is just...
00:06:06.96\00:06:08.56
Yeah, it's
amazing. And they're nice.
00:06:08.60\00:06:11.17
How about the cooking class?
00:06:11.20\00:06:12.63
Did you learn something there?
00:06:12.67\00:06:14.04
Yes, very helpful.
00:06:14.07\00:06:15.47
Especially, you know,
taking what I've learned home,
00:06:15.50\00:06:18.84
you know, I need to be
able to make it myself.
00:06:18.87\00:06:21.34
And Michelle was
the cooking instructor,
00:06:21.38\00:06:23.81
and she did a phenomenal
job of teaching us, you know,
00:06:23.85\00:06:27.15
practical tips, and
just how to, you know,
00:06:27.18\00:06:30.82
make use of the
things that we have.
00:06:30.85\00:06:33.99
What's your favored herb?
00:06:34.02\00:06:36.93
Probably, turmeric.
00:06:36.96\00:06:38.29
Turmeric? Yeah.
00:06:38.33\00:06:39.66
That's good, good
that that's your favorite,
00:06:39.69\00:06:41.03
that's going to
help in a lot of ways.
00:06:41.06\00:06:43.97
So what did you like
most about the program?
00:06:44.00\00:06:47.27
The staff.
00:06:47.30\00:06:48.80
And in which way?
00:06:48.84\00:06:50.17
What did the stuff
do that you appreciated?
00:06:50.21\00:06:53.74
Well, I mean they had
such an emphasis on prayer
00:06:53.78\00:06:57.21
and, you know, the higher power,
00:06:57.25\00:06:59.41
our Creator that is
able to heal, you know.
00:06:59.45\00:07:02.48
They know that God
is working through them,
00:07:02.52\00:07:04.35
and that's very powerful.
00:07:04.39\00:07:06.65
Yeah.
00:07:06.69\00:07:08.02
You know, some
of the graduations
00:07:08.06\00:07:09.66
I've been to lately,
00:07:09.69\00:07:12.09
the people who
came here to do this,
00:07:12.13\00:07:14.66
that or the other
generally testify that their...
00:07:14.70\00:07:18.97
They've increased
their walk with the Lord.
00:07:19.00\00:07:21.74
And they thought
they were coming here
00:07:21.77\00:07:23.37
to reverse
diabetes or gain weight,
00:07:23.41\00:07:26.21
when in fact, they came here
00:07:26.24\00:07:28.28
to get better
connected with God.
00:07:28.31\00:07:32.51
And, you know,
00:07:32.55\00:07:33.88
there is a spiritual
component of our program
00:07:33.92\00:07:36.55
that our viewers
don't necessarily know.
00:07:36.58\00:07:40.69
But I'm glad you brought that up
00:07:40.72\00:07:42.76
because God's
presence is on this campus.
00:07:42.79\00:07:48.53
And so, I'm very
grateful for that too
00:07:48.56\00:07:52.63
'cause that's what I
think took me through it.
00:07:52.67\00:07:55.17
Yeah.
00:07:55.20\00:07:56.54
Now, do you feel like
00:07:56.57\00:07:59.57
your morning worships
00:07:59.61\00:08:03.51
were unique in any way?
00:08:03.55\00:08:07.58
Yeah, 'cause it's not very often
00:08:07.62\00:08:09.82
that I wake up to music,
00:08:09.85\00:08:11.25
you know, worship through
music and hearing a sermon.
00:08:11.29\00:08:14.16
So that's very
beneficial for me,
00:08:14.19\00:08:17.46
and, you know, I
didn't know what to expect
00:08:17.49\00:08:19.56
coming to this
program, but, you know,
00:08:19.59\00:08:22.56
it surprised me at every corner,
00:08:22.60\00:08:24.07
and I actually
rededicated my life to Christ,
00:08:24.10\00:08:26.87
and following Him.
00:08:26.90\00:08:29.40
What did you
think of Pastor Snead?
00:08:29.44\00:08:32.01
Oh, he's amazing.
00:08:32.04\00:08:33.68
You can tell he has
the passion for God.
00:08:33.71\00:08:36.54
Oh, yeah.
00:08:36.58\00:08:38.41
And when he gets up there,
00:08:38.45\00:08:39.78
you can tell that God
is speaking through him,
00:08:39.81\00:08:41.45
and using his
words to reach people.
00:08:41.48\00:08:44.25
Now I think maybe he
might be next after you
00:08:44.29\00:08:47.52
or maybe we're
going to interview
00:08:47.56\00:08:48.99
Dr. Kuninobo first.
00:08:49.02\00:08:51.16
I'm not certain about that.
00:08:51.19\00:08:54.46
But nonetheless,
we'll be interviewing them,
00:08:54.50\00:08:56.73
and he'll be speaking
about, you know, the guests,
00:08:56.77\00:09:00.60
and what benefits they have
00:09:00.64\00:09:02.94
by having
morning worship etcetera.
00:09:02.97\00:09:06.88
So when you get home,
how's that going to be,
00:09:06.91\00:09:09.51
how are you
going to handle things?
00:09:09.54\00:09:12.41
Well, I do have a plan,
especially for waking up,
00:09:12.45\00:09:16.32
you know,
praising God through music,
00:09:16.35\00:09:18.39
and the Word, and just
staying connected to Him
00:09:18.42\00:09:22.12
because that's the
most important part.
00:09:22.16\00:09:23.76
And then, of course,
00:09:23.79\00:09:25.49
learning how to cook
for myself a lot better,
00:09:25.53\00:09:27.70
and doing the exercise and
following through with him.
00:09:27.73\00:09:31.20
Good.
00:09:31.23\00:09:32.57
You keep up the good work,
and we'll be in touch with you.
00:09:32.60\00:09:35.14
I know the doctors
will, probably Damon.
00:09:35.17\00:09:39.51
So thank you,
brother. Yes, thank you.
00:09:39.54\00:09:41.51
God bless you and keep it up.
00:09:41.54\00:09:43.45
But, friends, thank
you, but don't go away
00:09:43.48\00:09:46.68
because we have an
interview with Dr. Kuninobo.
00:09:46.72\00:09:50.29
Welcome back,
friends, Dr. Kuninobo.
00:09:52.95\00:09:55.66
How are you?
00:09:55.69\00:09:57.03
Can I call you Andrew or doctor?
00:09:57.06\00:09:59.46
I like Andrew too.
00:09:59.49\00:10:00.83
Andrew, okay. Yeah, that's fine.
00:10:00.86\00:10:02.33
You know, I want
to talk about Michael.
00:10:02.36\00:10:04.97
I want to get
right to the subject here
00:10:05.00\00:10:06.57
because when
Michael first got here,
00:10:06.60\00:10:10.77
I was little concerned
00:10:10.81\00:10:12.14
because, you know,
he didn't talk much,
00:10:12.17\00:10:14.18
he seemed to be really down
00:10:14.21\00:10:16.78
and he acted
like he had no hope,
00:10:16.81\00:10:20.85
and all, he was
just going to try
00:10:20.88\00:10:23.28
this to see if it worked.
00:10:23.32\00:10:25.32
From a professional perspective,
00:10:25.35\00:10:28.39
is that what you saw
00:10:28.42\00:10:29.82
or tell me something about that?
00:10:29.86\00:10:32.23
You know, I saw pretty much
the same thing that you did.
00:10:32.26\00:10:35.70
From a professional
standpoint, I would see that,
00:10:35.73\00:10:38.63
yeah, there was
definitely depression there,
00:10:38.67\00:10:40.64
and hopelessness,
and a lot of anxiety.
00:10:40.67\00:10:43.71
Yeah.
00:10:43.74\00:10:45.07
As we talked, there was a
lot of stress in his life,
00:10:45.11\00:10:46.91
a lot of it dealing
with his medical problems.
00:10:46.94\00:10:49.54
He was a young guy,
00:10:49.58\00:10:51.15
and he had so many
things not going well.
00:10:51.18\00:10:54.12
At a young age, it can be
discouraging and difficult.
00:10:54.15\00:10:57.95
Especially for a young
guy, and why more young people
00:10:57.99\00:11:03.63
don't attend our
program or programs like ours
00:11:03.66\00:11:07.70
is beyond me, but he
had the wherewithal to say,
00:11:07.73\00:11:10.77
"Hey, I need help. I'm
going to go get some help."
00:11:10.80\00:11:13.64
But then I noticed
during our second interview,
00:11:13.67\00:11:16.71
he was like more
awake, more aware.
00:11:16.74\00:11:19.27
He even mentioned, he says,
00:11:19.31\00:11:20.91
"Yeah, Dr. Kuninobo was
very so kind and gentle,"
00:11:20.94\00:11:25.75
which I get that from everybody.
00:11:25.78\00:11:27.72
Don't take that too personally.
00:11:27.75\00:11:29.08
Yeah, I won't.
You are a nice guy.
00:11:29.12\00:11:31.29
Very simple.
00:11:31.32\00:11:34.82
So he's telling us about
his doctor and his stay here,
00:11:34.86\00:11:38.39
and how you've
given him some hope,
00:11:38.43\00:11:40.70
and he can walk now,
00:11:40.73\00:11:42.66
and his attitude is changing,
00:11:42.70\00:11:45.17
how is this all possible?
00:11:45.20\00:11:47.14
Well, first of
all, it wasn't me.
00:11:47.17\00:11:48.74
Right.
00:11:48.77\00:11:50.11
You know, it's a
group, and it's a team effort.
00:11:50.14\00:11:51.64
We have everybody, nurses,
00:11:51.67\00:11:56.91
chaplain, nutritionists,
the doctors, all the staff.
00:11:56.95\00:12:00.75
And as you know we
pray a lot for the patients.
00:12:00.78\00:12:04.15
Yeah.
00:12:04.19\00:12:05.52
And it really is God
that touches people's lives
00:12:05.55\00:12:08.02
when they come here.
00:12:08.06\00:12:09.59
And it's the
work on the heart...
00:12:09.62\00:12:14.70
I'm so glad to
hear you say that.
00:12:14.73\00:12:16.06
That makes a difference.
00:12:16.10\00:12:17.43
And I don't know how many
times I hear people come here
00:12:17.47\00:12:20.37
thinking, I've got
this medical problem
00:12:20.40\00:12:22.24
and this medical
problem, but after a week or so
00:12:22.27\00:12:25.71
here they realize
00:12:25.74\00:12:27.08
that even though they
came for physical healing,
00:12:27.11\00:12:29.71
what they really
needed was spiritual healing.
00:12:29.74\00:12:33.52
I hear that at graduation.
00:12:33.55\00:12:35.88
My wife had been to a graduation
00:12:35.92\00:12:38.59
for a couple of years,
00:12:38.62\00:12:39.95
and then she came to
one a couple of months ago,
00:12:39.99\00:12:42.46
and she says,
"Ron, it was amazing.
00:12:42.49\00:12:44.83
Nobody talked about
00:12:44.86\00:12:46.36
how they got better
with their study, you know,
00:12:46.39\00:12:48.26
they talked about
the spiritual healing."
00:12:48.30\00:12:51.80
And that's so wonderful to
hear you say that because...
00:12:51.83\00:12:54.70
Well, that's the
most important element.
00:12:54.74\00:12:56.20
Oh, exactly.
00:12:56.24\00:12:57.57
You know, the viewers
they're watching right now
00:12:57.61\00:13:00.31
from all over the
world are looking for a place
00:13:00.34\00:13:03.28
they could go that maybe
has a real strong component
00:13:03.31\00:13:09.38
of Christ like
character, you know.
00:13:09.42\00:13:12.72
And we know that God
is here on this campus.
00:13:12.75\00:13:15.82
His hand is over this campus,
00:13:15.86\00:13:18.13
and I've seen it
time and time again.
00:13:18.16\00:13:20.50
And it's good to
hear you say that.
00:13:20.53\00:13:22.76
Well, it certainly touched
me the first staff meeting
00:13:22.80\00:13:25.43
that I attended
after arriving here,
00:13:25.47\00:13:28.24
15 months, 16 months ago.
00:13:28.27\00:13:30.74
And I've been in staff meetings,
00:13:30.77\00:13:32.77
three years with
various medical institutions,
00:13:32.81\00:13:35.48
programs, onward,
00:13:35.51\00:13:38.38
but to have the number of people
00:13:38.41\00:13:41.18
praying got the individuals
praying over the patients,
00:13:41.22\00:13:46.65
I was overwhelmed
quite frankly with emotion.
00:13:46.69\00:13:48.76
I mean, it was a very
touching moment for me.
00:13:48.79\00:13:50.76
It brought tears to my
eyes just to see and work
00:13:50.79\00:13:53.46
with other doctors and nurses,
00:13:53.50\00:13:57.77
who had such a strong desire
for the patients to be healed,
00:13:57.80\00:14:03.74
not just
physically, but socially,
00:14:03.77\00:14:08.21
mentally, but most
importantly, spiritually.
00:14:08.24\00:14:12.05
Yeah. Yeah.
00:14:12.08\00:14:13.42
That's just so wonderful.
00:14:13.45\00:14:15.38
I had no idea that
would happen to me.
00:14:15.42\00:14:19.72
But when I came through,
that's exactly what happened.
00:14:19.75\00:14:23.56
Then I start studying the Bible
00:14:23.59\00:14:25.23
right after I graduated
from the NEWSTART program.
00:14:25.26\00:14:28.46
And three months
later, I was baptized.
00:14:28.50\00:14:30.57
Oh, Praise the Lord.
00:14:30.60\00:14:31.93
So, yeah, I was
like being real then.
00:14:31.97\00:14:35.07
I was being wooed by the Lord.
00:14:35.10\00:14:38.11
And I was so thankful
that He didn't give up on me,
00:14:38.14\00:14:41.81
and I see that
with our patients here,
00:14:41.84\00:14:44.68
our guests, as we refer to them,
00:14:44.71\00:14:47.25
that God didn't give up on them.
00:14:47.28\00:14:49.28
They're here, they've been drawn
00:14:49.32\00:14:50.82
and wooed to attend...
00:14:50.85\00:14:53.05
Many of them think it's
because of their diabetes
00:14:53.09\00:14:56.22
or their depression, but
as Michael has explained,
00:14:56.26\00:15:01.40
also that spiritual aspect,
where you've seen God's love
00:15:01.43\00:15:05.93
through his doctor.
00:15:05.97\00:15:08.00
Come on, that's powerful.
00:15:08.04\00:15:10.04
And, you know, Michael did well.
00:15:10.07\00:15:11.77
Yes.
00:15:11.81\00:15:13.48
I think that...
00:15:13.51\00:15:16.54
I don't remember
the exact numbers,
00:15:16.58\00:15:17.91
but, you know,
he was so fatigued
00:15:17.95\00:15:19.38
and he was so down,
00:15:19.41\00:15:21.02
but his energy level was
up, he was walking a lot more,
00:15:21.05\00:15:23.69
he was actually
gaining some weight,
00:15:23.72\00:15:25.69
but who exercises more
and gains weight, right?
00:15:25.72\00:15:29.36
Usually people
exercise and lose weight, right?
00:15:29.39\00:15:32.23
He was gaining weight, you know.
00:15:32.26\00:15:35.13
Still going to be a
process for Michael, no doubt,
00:15:35.16\00:15:38.17
and I think he would probably
be the first to tell you
00:15:38.20\00:15:40.60
that he's come along.
00:15:40.64\00:15:43.97
You know, I think about
Michael and I think about again
00:15:44.01\00:15:48.31
touching on the
fact that he was young.
00:15:48.34\00:15:50.68
You know, I just,
oh, I just so wished
00:15:50.71\00:15:52.85
that more young people
00:15:52.88\00:15:55.18
would take
advantage of the opportunity
00:15:55.22\00:15:57.49
they have to get
control of their health
00:15:57.52\00:16:01.56
when they are young
00:16:01.59\00:16:02.99
rather than waiting
till they've lost it
00:16:03.02\00:16:05.13
and then trying to catch up.
00:16:05.16\00:16:08.13
And so many people
wait until they're sick,
00:16:08.16\00:16:10.10
in their 40s, and their 50s,
00:16:10.13\00:16:11.47
and their 60s before they come.
00:16:11.50\00:16:13.54
Would be wonderful
if we had a whole group
00:16:13.57\00:16:16.30
of just young people.
00:16:16.34\00:16:17.67
Yes, and I'm going to
pray for that tonight.
00:16:17.71\00:16:19.11
Yes.
00:16:19.14\00:16:20.48
Okay, Doctor, thank you so much.
00:16:20.51\00:16:22.68
Friends, thank
you, don't go away,
00:16:22.71\00:16:24.91
Pastor Snead will be right up.
00:16:24.95\00:16:26.72
Welcome back, friends,
and welcome, Damon Snead.
00:17:02.38\00:17:05.75
Thank you, friend.
Pastor, how are you?
00:17:05.79\00:17:07.62
I'm doing well.
00:17:07.66\00:17:08.99
How is everyone treating you?
00:17:09.02\00:17:10.36
We never asked how you are.
00:17:10.39\00:17:12.16
We're always talking
about everybody else.
00:17:12.19\00:17:14.13
Rode hard and put up wet.
00:17:14.16\00:17:16.83
That's a good old Texas English.
00:17:16.87\00:17:19.07
I know you ride those horses.
00:17:19.10\00:17:20.64
I used to, yeah. You used to.
00:17:20.67\00:17:22.17
I stay away from them now.
00:17:22.20\00:17:23.54
A thousand pounds of orneryness.
00:17:23.57\00:17:25.84
I try to stay on the stuff
little more stable nowadays.
00:17:25.87\00:17:29.61
Well, now we get to deal
with the human orneryness.
00:17:29.64\00:17:32.71
Oh, yeah.
00:17:32.75\00:17:34.32
Well, you know, what I
see about folks that come
00:17:34.35\00:17:36.92
to the NEWSTART program
00:17:36.95\00:17:39.39
is they may come
here a little ornery
00:17:39.42\00:17:41.59
but they leave
with a softened heart.
00:17:41.62\00:17:44.26
This is true.
00:17:44.29\00:17:45.63
God just takes away
this hardened heart,
00:17:45.66\00:17:48.00
somehow, some way, and I
know you are part of the reason
00:17:48.03\00:17:53.87
because of...
00:17:53.90\00:17:55.64
Tell us about how you
start the day with our guests?
00:17:55.67\00:17:59.71
Well, I start the
day with the spiritual.
00:17:59.74\00:18:02.78
Actually, Irwin
starts the piano music,
00:18:02.81\00:18:05.45
he gets their hearts soften
up to spiritual juices flowing,
00:18:05.48\00:18:08.52
and then we have prayer.
00:18:08.55\00:18:09.88
Then we go
straight into lectures.
00:18:09.92\00:18:11.95
But it is spiritual.
00:18:11.99\00:18:13.32
The idea is to warm the
heart, to get them close to God,
00:18:13.36\00:18:16.96
as close as they can be to
learn something they didn't,
00:18:16.99\00:18:19.73
and have those practices be
used in their daily life here
00:18:19.76\00:18:22.96
'cause they're going to
need him, you know, here.
00:18:23.00\00:18:25.50
And they're
really going to need them
00:18:25.53\00:18:26.87
when they go home,
00:18:26.90\00:18:28.24
and that's our
idea of the morning
00:18:28.27\00:18:29.60
at Fresh Start is
just to begin through
00:18:29.64\00:18:30.97
what I call the will of faith.
00:18:31.01\00:18:32.94
But I know of
us, from the outside
00:18:32.97\00:18:34.98
we're looking in, so to speak.
00:18:35.01\00:18:37.21
There are certain individuals
that really get that,
00:18:37.25\00:18:40.75
and they take what it is
that you're teaching them
00:18:40.78\00:18:44.32
and they run
with it like Michael.
00:18:44.35\00:18:46.76
Michael says, you know,
00:18:46.79\00:18:48.89
"I want to know
where God wants me?
00:18:48.92\00:18:50.73
I know I have a ministry,
I'm not sure what it is,
00:18:50.76\00:18:53.70
but help me to understand this."
00:18:53.73\00:18:55.86
And I go, "Man,
you're right on track."
00:18:55.90\00:18:58.63
You're right there
'cause you're asking
00:18:58.67\00:19:00.87
God will tell you,
he'll open those doors
00:19:00.90\00:19:03.51
and heal you to boot.
00:19:03.54\00:19:05.34
But tell me more
about that with him?
00:19:05.37\00:19:07.14
Well, Michael would be our Paul.
00:19:07.18\00:19:09.94
The thorn in the flesh guy.
00:19:09.98\00:19:11.81
Now, in a week, we
kind of progress there.
00:19:11.85\00:19:14.22
When he first came
here, he's got something
00:19:14.25\00:19:16.69
that's hard to
diagnose, that's not real sure,
00:19:16.72\00:19:19.69
but he was wanting to be healed,
00:19:19.72\00:19:21.79
so that he could serve.
00:19:21.82\00:19:23.32
That was his
main goal, thank God.
00:19:23.36\00:19:25.06
I've got to be healed,
00:19:25.09\00:19:26.43
so that I can
find my place with God.
00:19:26.46\00:19:28.46
But unfortunately,
he's got one of these things
00:19:28.50\00:19:30.23
that are difficult...
00:19:30.27\00:19:31.60
Again, NEWSTART comes
through because he leaves here
00:19:31.63\00:19:34.54
with either a pound
or half a pound heavier,
00:19:34.57\00:19:36.84
which is big for this guy
because he's never, you know,
00:19:36.87\00:19:39.57
he's very thin,
he can't gain weight,
00:19:39.61\00:19:42.38
so he was very positive
00:19:42.41\00:19:43.75
about this
weight gain that he had.
00:19:43.78\00:19:45.81
But then we came away at the end
00:19:45.85\00:19:47.42
realizing that he has one
of these chronic disorders.
00:19:47.45\00:19:51.12
So we left with the idea
that we can serve God any way.
00:19:51.15\00:19:55.56
We can serve God
even when we have things
00:19:55.59\00:19:57.99
that are not readily healable,
00:19:58.03\00:20:00.00
where we still got this
process of healing to go.
00:20:00.03\00:20:03.00
And he came to this place
where towards the end he said,
00:20:03.03\00:20:05.37
you know, "I want to
serve God now even if I'm sick."
00:20:05.40\00:20:11.51
And he
understood the will of faith
00:20:11.54\00:20:14.38
means that by faith
not only am I saved,
00:20:14.41\00:20:17.41
and by faith not
only am I transformed,
00:20:17.45\00:20:19.25
but by faith I'll live.
00:20:19.28\00:20:20.82
So even if it's with problems,
by faith I'm going to trust God
00:20:20.85\00:20:24.49
and step out, and, of course,
that's what he's going home
00:20:24.52\00:20:27.59
in his mind to do.
00:20:27.62\00:20:29.92
Now do you find this to
be true for all our guests
00:20:29.96\00:20:32.23
that they all have
this attitude of change
00:20:32.26\00:20:36.67
and standing out on
faith or what about the rest?
00:20:36.70\00:20:40.64
No, what I find in the...
00:20:40.67\00:20:43.47
The guests that do
the least, they leave here
00:20:43.51\00:20:47.01
with the least
amount of good or results.
00:20:47.04\00:20:50.75
They're the ones
that don't do that.
00:20:50.78\00:20:52.31
And I'm saying this
as God as my witness.
00:20:52.35\00:20:55.18
I have seen it now
for 14-15 sessions.
00:20:55.22\00:20:58.22
And the ones
halfway through the program
00:20:58.25\00:20:59.95
they do not work in the program,
00:20:59.99\00:21:01.32
they don't come to
the Fresh Start lectures.
00:21:01.36\00:21:03.02
I can tell you at
the end of the program,
00:21:03.06\00:21:04.49
they're going to be the ones
that are struggling the most.
00:21:04.53\00:21:07.40
The ones that grasp
00:21:07.43\00:21:08.76
the spiritual
concept of God's help,
00:21:08.80\00:21:10.77
God being with him, and
they really put the effort
00:21:10.80\00:21:13.57
into the eight
principles of the health,
00:21:13.60\00:21:15.24
they're the ones that
leave with flying colors
00:21:15.27\00:21:17.04
with the great stories,
00:21:17.07\00:21:18.41
and it is a systematic
measurable thing every session.
00:21:18.44\00:21:22.94
You know, when I do my
lecture on the first Saturday
00:21:22.98\00:21:25.71
that they're here, I say,
00:21:25.75\00:21:27.42
"You know, folks, the
reason why I was successful?
00:21:27.45\00:21:30.15
I came to every single lecture.
00:21:30.19\00:21:32.89
I sat right up
front, I took notes,
00:21:32.92\00:21:35.62
I did everything
I was told to do,
00:21:35.66\00:21:37.99
and God healed me.
00:21:38.03\00:21:40.13
And so I would advise you
to get on the bandwagon here
00:21:40.16\00:21:45.03
and let God heal you."
00:21:45.07\00:21:47.60
You know, some people
are just the way they are.
00:21:47.64\00:21:49.17
Some people are very weak,
and I've have learned that too.
00:21:49.20\00:21:52.51
For a few guests
that have been here,
00:21:52.54\00:21:54.74
I've learned how
weak the human nature is.
00:21:54.78\00:21:56.88
And my heart goes out to them,
00:21:56.91\00:21:58.25
and I know that
they're trying to...
00:21:58.28\00:21:59.61
They will come
back, some of them
00:21:59.65\00:22:00.98
about two or three times,
00:22:01.02\00:22:02.35
and they're
trying, and they're trying,
00:22:02.38\00:22:04.09
and God bless them,
00:22:04.12\00:22:05.45
we just got to
keep praying for them,
00:22:05.49\00:22:07.22
and hope that they'll
grab on to that idea of faith.
00:22:07.26\00:22:10.13
But you do as you say,
00:22:10.16\00:22:11.49
you got to have
some skin in the game.
00:22:11.53\00:22:13.23
God wants you to take
that step forward towards Him.
00:22:13.26\00:22:16.77
We have run out
of time, brother.
00:22:16.80\00:22:18.73
Well, thank you so
much. God bless you.
00:22:18.77\00:22:21.54
And God bless you too, friends.
00:22:21.57\00:22:22.90
Don't go away, stay
tuned for the next segment.
00:22:22.94\00:22:25.94
Welcome to NEWSTART Now.
00:22:29.44\00:22:31.11
I'm Dr. Neil Nedley,
president of Weimar Institute.
00:22:31.15\00:22:33.82
And with me today
is Dr. Eddie Ramirez,
00:22:33.85\00:22:35.95
one of our
researchers, and physicians,
00:22:35.98\00:22:37.99
and teachers of
research here at Weimar College.
00:22:38.02\00:22:42.22
And in fact,
00:22:42.26\00:22:43.59
the study we're going to
be talking to you about today,
00:22:43.63\00:22:46.80
we had help from one
of our college students,
00:22:46.83\00:22:49.66
Katie and Tina, who actually
has been very instrumental,
00:22:49.70\00:22:54.40
and actually helping
out with the depression
00:22:54.44\00:22:56.87
and anxiety
recovery program on campus.
00:22:56.91\00:23:00.88
But in this particular study,
we were looking at a factor
00:23:00.91\00:23:04.51
called emotional intelligence.
00:23:04.55\00:23:07.78
And, you know, Dr. Ramirez,
00:23:07.82\00:23:09.45
I was just seeing
in Forbes magazine,
00:23:09.48\00:23:11.39
they recommend that you
hire for emotional intelligence
00:23:11.42\00:23:14.62
even more so than
general intelligence
00:23:14.66\00:23:17.46
that this has much more to
do with your future success,
00:23:17.49\00:23:20.33
and happiness, and your
ability to stay employed,
00:23:20.36\00:23:23.37
and to reach higher
levels of employment.
00:23:23.40\00:23:26.84
And so, Dr. Ramirez,
00:23:26.87\00:23:28.84
this study is coming out
in biological psychiatry.
00:23:28.87\00:23:33.24
And the interesting thing is
00:23:33.27\00:23:36.18
what we've put into our body,
00:23:36.21\00:23:37.81
what we do with our body
00:23:37.85\00:23:39.35
actually has to do
with our brain chemistry,
00:23:39.38\00:23:41.58
and it can change the
biology in the brain itself.
00:23:41.62\00:23:45.79
And that's what
this study showed,
00:23:45.82\00:23:47.19
and why it was published
in biological psychiatry.
00:23:47.22\00:23:50.19
So tell us a little bit
about the study group itself.
00:23:50.23\00:23:56.00
Who was studied in this
emotional intelligence data?
00:23:56.03\00:23:59.33
We have a very nice sample group
00:23:59.37\00:24:01.37
of 5,611 participants
00:24:01.40\00:24:05.71
that did the community
00:24:05.74\00:24:08.38
based
depression recovery program
00:24:08.41\00:24:11.18
in literally around the world.
00:24:11.21\00:24:13.38
Okay, so these subjects
00:24:13.42\00:24:16.02
were not Weimar
Institute per se,
00:24:16.05\00:24:18.85
but they were coming to
learn Weimar type of principles.
00:24:18.89\00:24:23.12
And they were
particularly coming
00:24:23.16\00:24:25.69
because they had
depression, is that right?
00:24:25.73\00:24:28.33
Yes, three quarters
of them had depression,
00:24:28.36\00:24:30.77
one quarter of them didn't have,
00:24:30.80\00:24:32.57
but wanted to
improve their mental health.
00:24:32.60\00:24:34.40
Okay.
00:24:34.44\00:24:35.77
So most of them came
with significant depression,
00:24:35.80\00:24:38.64
and this is a mental
health education program
00:24:38.67\00:24:41.71
they're coming to.
00:24:41.74\00:24:44.71
How many
educational sessions are there?
00:24:44.75\00:24:46.88
That's right. They have...
00:24:46.92\00:24:48.48
It is an eight week program.
00:24:48.52\00:24:50.02
So they had that eight sessions,
00:24:50.05\00:24:52.79
and one program in particular,
we focus in helping them
00:24:52.82\00:24:56.79
understand this
concept, and how to improve it,
00:24:56.83\00:25:00.50
but not only that was important,
00:25:00.53\00:25:04.03
but we had to
put the foundations
00:25:04.07\00:25:06.13
before we talk about EQ
and this type of concepts,
00:25:06.17\00:25:09.44
we had to change their diet,
00:25:09.47\00:25:10.81
we had to put
them to do exercise
00:25:10.84\00:25:12.77
and so forth to prepare
the environment for them
00:25:12.81\00:25:15.64
to understand these concepts.
00:25:15.68\00:25:17.51
Well, that's quite interesting.
00:25:17.55\00:25:19.51
And so, we do first some changes
00:25:19.55\00:25:22.52
in what were they
putting into their body,
00:25:22.55\00:25:24.45
what they're
doing with their body
00:25:24.49\00:25:25.82
that helps change the biology,
00:25:25.85\00:25:27.89
and then we get
into teaching them
00:25:27.92\00:25:29.92
about how they're thinking.
00:25:29.96\00:25:31.79
And how we think can actually
00:25:31.83\00:25:34.23
change our brain
chemistry as well.
00:25:34.26\00:25:36.60
And so, emotional intelligence,
can you tell us what it is?
00:25:36.63\00:25:40.37
It's that ability for
you to interact with others
00:25:40.40\00:25:44.94
and to motivate yourself.
00:25:44.97\00:25:46.47
There's five things
00:25:46.51\00:25:47.84
that emotional
intelligence measures
00:25:47.88\00:25:49.31
and that is,
knowing your emotions,
00:25:49.34\00:25:51.25
managing your emotions,
recognizing emotions in others,
00:25:51.28\00:25:54.85
managing
relationships in others,
00:25:54.88\00:25:56.89
and motivating
yourself to reach those goals.
00:25:56.92\00:26:00.12
Okay, so you can see
00:26:00.16\00:26:01.52
why it's very
important to happiness
00:26:01.56\00:26:03.12
because relationship is
connected to our happiness
00:26:03.16\00:26:07.20
and healthy relationships are.
00:26:07.23\00:26:09.20
And so what did we find out?
00:26:09.23\00:26:10.57
What was the average
emotional intelligence
00:26:10.60\00:26:12.60
for those that
came into the program?
00:26:12.63\00:26:14.34
So on average, they had 100
00:26:14.37\00:26:17.21
which is the normal
average around the world.
00:26:17.24\00:26:20.38
Okay.
00:26:20.41\00:26:21.74
So even though
they were depressed,
00:26:21.78\00:26:23.11
their EQ was on average,
00:26:23.14\00:26:24.81
right at the
average point at 100.
00:26:24.85\00:26:28.22
And what was able to happen
00:26:28.25\00:26:30.45
during the course of
that just one program,
00:26:30.49\00:26:32.72
once a week for eight weeks.
00:26:32.75\00:26:34.36
That's right.
00:26:34.39\00:26:35.72
At the end, they had
on average an EQ of 108.9.
00:26:35.76\00:26:41.76
Okay, so they
went up nine points.
00:26:41.80\00:26:44.50
That's like an
entire standard deviation.
00:26:44.53\00:26:47.80
That's very significant.
00:26:47.84\00:26:49.17
And that's the average.
00:26:49.20\00:26:50.54
There are some that actually
went beyond the 120 barrier,
00:26:50.57\00:26:56.54
so that puts them
in the very top levels
00:26:56.58\00:26:59.65
of emotional intelligence.
00:26:59.68\00:27:01.12
Wow, and that means they
not only left the program
00:27:01.15\00:27:04.02
depression free and anxiety free
00:27:04.05\00:27:06.76
as many do that
leave that program,
00:27:06.79\00:27:09.52
but they're now set
up for levels of success
00:27:09.56\00:27:12.13
that are far better than people
00:27:12.16\00:27:13.60
who have never had
depression and anxiety.
00:27:13.63\00:27:15.10
Yeah, those people
00:27:15.13\00:27:16.46
that usually in
a groups setting,
00:27:16.50\00:27:18.10
they're causing
sparks all over them,
00:27:18.13\00:27:21.34
those people have actually
00:27:21.37\00:27:22.70
a very low
emotional intelligence.
00:27:22.74\00:27:24.07
They can have
00:27:24.11\00:27:25.44
low emotional
intelligence and high IQ.
00:27:25.47\00:27:28.08
And this one helps you to
get that balance, you know,
00:27:28.11\00:27:31.08
improve that IQ and EQ
00:27:31.11\00:27:33.28
as you
participate in the program.
00:27:33.31\00:27:35.55
