Hi, friends, and
welcome to another edition
00:01:11.83\00:01:14.04
of NEWSTART Now.
00:01:14.07\00:01:15.67
I'm your host Ron Giannoni.
00:01:15.70\00:01:17.81
We got an amazing
story for you today.
00:01:17.84\00:01:21.11
Matt Pedregon, I hope
I pronounced that right,
00:01:21.14\00:01:26.21
is in our studio today.
00:01:26.25\00:01:27.98
Matt, how you are
you doing, brother?
00:01:28.02\00:01:29.52
Good, how are
you? I am doing great.
00:01:29.55\00:01:32.45
And we've got a
lot to talk about
00:01:32.49\00:01:36.29
changes that
you've been through,
00:01:36.32\00:01:40.16
and I want to get right to that.
00:01:40.20\00:01:42.56
When you got here,
00:01:42.60\00:01:44.73
tell us what
medications were you on?
00:01:44.77\00:01:48.14
I was on two
different types of insulin,
00:01:48.17\00:01:53.14
I was on high blood
pressure medication,
00:01:53.17\00:01:56.64
kidney medication,
metformin and glipizide.
00:01:56.68\00:02:03.12
Wow.
00:02:03.15\00:02:04.52
And I was giving
myself four injections a day,
00:02:04.55\00:02:09.52
two in the
morning, two in the evening.
00:02:09.56\00:02:12.83
Taking four pills a day,
two in the morning, two...
00:02:12.86\00:02:15.26
I'm sorry, three pills a day...
00:02:15.30\00:02:17.43
Four pills a day,
00:02:17.47\00:02:20.17
four in the
morning and two at night.
00:02:20.20\00:02:22.87
All right, so what
was your blood pressure?
00:02:22.90\00:02:25.41
When I got here, it
was like borderline,
00:02:25.44\00:02:30.01
I believe, borderline.
00:02:30.05\00:02:31.51
Up in the high 140, 150 over...
00:02:31.55\00:02:35.12
How about your blood sugars?
00:02:35.15\00:02:36.69
My blood sugars,
before I got here,
00:02:36.72\00:02:39.02
they were anywhere
from high 200s to low 400s.
00:02:39.05\00:02:44.33
Okay, so now you get here...
00:02:44.36\00:02:46.26
Yes.
00:02:46.29\00:02:47.63
You're on the program.
00:02:47.66\00:02:49.23
And whence the first
time that you noticed
00:02:49.26\00:02:54.54
something special was happening?
00:02:54.57\00:03:00.28
Well, the very first time
00:03:00.31\00:03:01.84
I noticed something special here
00:03:01.88\00:03:05.08
was when I actually got here.
00:03:05.11\00:03:06.92
I just felt the
Holy Spirit here.
00:03:06.95\00:03:10.29
Believe it or not, that's
what I felt when I got here.
00:03:10.32\00:03:12.62
Oh, I believe it.
00:03:12.65\00:03:15.22
And it just really
touched my heart to see...
00:03:15.26\00:03:21.10
Well, I have Kaiser,
00:03:21.13\00:03:22.46
and I have a
good doctor in Kaiser,
00:03:22.50\00:03:24.23
but my doctor
never prays with me.
00:03:24.27\00:03:26.97
And that was the first thing
I saw in the first lectures
00:03:27.00\00:03:30.74
with the doctors,
00:03:30.77\00:03:32.11
they open with a prayer
and end it with a prayer.
00:03:32.14\00:03:35.38
And...
00:03:35.41\00:03:36.75
Who's your doctor? Dr. Lukens.
00:03:36.78\00:03:38.51
Okay. Yes.
00:03:38.55\00:03:39.88
He's a good prayer.
00:03:39.91\00:03:41.25
Oh, he's awesome,
he's very funny too.
00:03:41.28\00:03:43.69
Oh, yes, yes.
00:03:43.72\00:03:45.05
So that was the
first time that I...
00:03:45.09\00:03:49.42
That was the very first thing
that struck me here is that
00:03:49.46\00:03:51.46
God's Holy Spirit was here
00:03:51.49\00:03:54.46
and in all the
employees that work here.
00:03:54.50\00:03:56.90
Amen.
00:03:56.93\00:03:58.27
And that's... Yeah.
00:03:58.30\00:03:59.93
That's huge. Yeah.
00:03:59.97\00:04:02.64
So now you're here
for five or six days,
00:04:02.67\00:04:07.04
what's happening?
00:04:07.08\00:04:08.81
So the second day,
00:04:08.84\00:04:12.75
I had breakfast
and the late lunch,
00:04:12.78\00:04:15.85
and I found out...
00:04:15.88\00:04:17.22
I was only going
to eat twice a day
00:04:17.25\00:04:19.19
How did that go?
00:04:19.22\00:04:20.56
Well, at first, I was...
00:04:20.59\00:04:23.56
It made me a little nervous
00:04:23.59\00:04:24.93
because I'm used to eating
three or more meals a day,
00:04:24.96\00:04:27.53
right.
00:04:27.56\00:04:28.90
And that didn't
happen so I was like,
00:04:28.93\00:04:31.07
"Okay, well, I'm here to have
an open mind and open heart,
00:04:31.10\00:04:34.27
and I'm going to do
whatever is asked of me to do,
00:04:34.30\00:04:38.21
and mainly to glorify God."
00:04:38.24\00:04:40.24
So I know this program
is here because of God so...
00:04:40.28\00:04:45.38
And I know He has a special diet
00:04:45.41\00:04:47.28
that He has
already created for us,
00:04:47.32\00:04:49.48
and it's going back
to that original diet
00:04:49.52\00:04:51.15
that He has
created so I'm going to do
00:04:51.19\00:04:53.49
whatever it
takes to follow that.
00:04:53.52\00:04:56.46
So you were open.
So I was open to that.
00:04:56.49\00:04:58.53
And then they said,
00:04:58.56\00:04:59.89
"You're going to
fast now for three days."
00:04:59.93\00:05:01.93
Oh, no! So...
00:05:01.96\00:05:04.33
"Lay the load with the
bomb on. You're there now."
00:05:04.37\00:05:06.00
So yeah, so we made
it through the fast.
00:05:06.03\00:05:11.91
And then I checked my sugars,
00:05:11.94\00:05:13.58
and, of course, I
didn't have no food in me
00:05:13.61\00:05:14.94
but they were like,
00:05:14.98\00:05:16.61
the numbers were like
I've never seen before.
00:05:16.64\00:05:18.28
They were 90, under
100, you know, low 100s.
00:05:18.31\00:05:23.59
Still not where I wanted
them, but I was like, wow.
00:05:23.62\00:05:27.06
And even though I was
fasting, I was feeling good
00:05:27.09\00:05:29.99
because before with
all that medication,
00:05:30.03\00:05:32.16
I was always feeling tired...
00:05:32.19\00:05:33.86
Were you fasting on medication?
00:05:33.90\00:05:35.60
No.
00:05:35.63\00:05:36.97
Dr. Lukens came
in the second day...
00:05:37.00\00:05:38.83
He took you off all.
00:05:38.87\00:05:40.20
Right before the
fast 'cause he asked me,
00:05:40.24\00:05:41.57
"Are you going to fast?"
00:05:41.60\00:05:42.94
And I said,
00:05:42.97\00:05:44.31
"Well, do you
recommend me fasting?"
00:05:44.34\00:05:45.67
He said, "Yes." I said, "Okay."
00:05:45.71\00:05:47.71
And then I said, "Do
you I take my medication?"
00:05:47.74\00:05:49.64
No.
00:05:49.68\00:05:51.01
He's like, "I don't
care if you do or don't"
00:05:51.05\00:05:52.98
So I took it as no
and I stopped my meds.
00:05:53.01\00:05:55.35
Right. So I
haven't taken any since.
00:05:55.38\00:05:57.89
And how are your
blood sugars now?
00:05:57.92\00:05:59.79
Well, now they're not
exactly where I want them.
00:05:59.82\00:06:03.66
They are still like low 100s,
00:06:03.69\00:06:07.86
but they're a lot better
00:06:07.90\00:06:10.23
than when I was on all
that diabetes medication.
00:06:10.27\00:06:13.67
They're way
better, and I feel it.
00:06:13.70\00:06:15.04
So you're better off
without the medication,
00:06:15.07\00:06:18.17
you're not quite where you
are, but you're in the low 100s.
00:06:18.21\00:06:20.68
Yes, that's with no
medication. Excellent.
00:06:20.71\00:06:23.04
How about your blood pressure?
00:06:23.08\00:06:24.41
Oh, wow, it's been like 99/60.
00:06:24.45\00:06:30.12
I think, this
morning it was 90/64
00:06:30.15\00:06:33.12
something like that.
00:06:33.15\00:06:34.49
Are you on
medication for blood pressures?
00:06:34.52\00:06:36.52
No, no. I was. You was?
00:06:36.56\00:06:39.33
I were. I was.
Yeah, you were. You was.
00:06:39.36\00:06:42.83
Little play on words. Yes.
00:06:42.86\00:06:44.20
But yeah, it's just
amazing how this works.
00:06:44.23\00:06:49.70
What about the insulin now?
00:06:49.74\00:06:51.17
Weren't you
shooting insulin in your gut?
00:06:51.21\00:06:53.94
Two different types of insulin.
00:06:53.98\00:06:55.91
Four or five times a day?
00:06:55.94\00:06:57.68
Four times a day,
00:06:57.71\00:06:59.38
twice in the morning,
twice at night before bed.
00:06:59.41\00:07:02.42
And I haven't taken any insulin
00:07:02.45\00:07:03.79
since I've been
here, and my sugars are
00:07:03.82\00:07:07.76
way better than when
I was using the insulin
00:07:07.79\00:07:11.33
which is supposed
to control my sugars.
00:07:11.36\00:07:12.99
Sure. Yeah.
00:07:13.03\00:07:14.36
I know. So.
00:07:14.40\00:07:16.06
And it's unbelievable.
00:07:16.10\00:07:17.57
What else? Tell me
more, tell me more?
00:07:17.60\00:07:18.93
I've lost like 13.5 pounds,
00:07:18.97\00:07:22.67
I've lost 2 inches
from my midsection,
00:07:22.70\00:07:25.27
I've lost an inch from my hips,
00:07:25.31\00:07:27.54
and I've gained
an inch on my arms.
00:07:27.58\00:07:29.14
Whoa!
00:07:29.18\00:07:30.51
'Cause I've been doing a little
extra workout on the side.
00:07:30.55\00:07:32.28
Little push-ups
and stuff like that.
00:07:32.31\00:07:34.35
Just because I
used to feel so weak
00:07:34.38\00:07:36.38
before I came here.
00:07:36.42\00:07:37.95
I always felt so weak,
so lethargic, never had...
00:07:37.99\00:07:41.49
Were you kind of,
like, buff kind of guy?
00:07:41.52\00:07:43.93
No, used to be.
00:07:43.96\00:07:45.49
No, but...
00:07:45.53\00:07:46.86
Yeah, so I just
noticed those kinds of changes,
00:07:46.90\00:07:51.17
and the biggest change...
00:07:51.20\00:07:53.37
The biggest thing here that I...
00:07:53.40\00:07:55.57
The biggest component
to all of this is God.
00:07:59.01\00:08:02.28
The biggest piece of
the whole program is God.
00:08:02.31\00:08:07.32
Like how can you not
00:08:07.35\00:08:12.05
fall in love with
God all over again
00:08:12.09\00:08:13.89
being here in this program.
00:08:13.92\00:08:15.26
That's what happened
to me, honestly so...
00:08:15.29\00:08:18.89
That and along
with the health plan,
00:08:18.93\00:08:23.93
I mean, it all
goes hand in hand.
00:08:23.97\00:08:25.50
It has to go together,
00:08:25.53\00:08:30.21
you know, 'cause
that's God's plan for us.
00:08:30.24\00:08:32.97
And...
00:08:33.01\00:08:34.81
How'd you like the food?
00:08:34.84\00:08:36.64
The food was, surprisingly good.
00:08:36.68\00:08:39.15
All right.
00:08:39.18\00:08:40.52
Yeah, the food is good,
and I was so surprised how...
00:08:40.55\00:08:45.85
You know, just
the variety of food
00:08:45.89\00:08:48.52
and how tasty it was,
especially, the cook Michelle.
00:08:48.56\00:08:53.43
She just makes,
whips it up so quickly,
00:08:53.46\00:08:55.70
she makes it taste so good...
00:08:55.73\00:08:57.07
She is the best.
00:08:57.10\00:08:58.43
All the way from
Mexican food to...
00:08:58.47\00:09:01.00
Whatever. Chinese, Mexican.
00:09:01.04\00:09:04.01
And it was awesome.
The breakfasts were good.
00:09:04.04\00:09:07.31
Now I understand that
00:09:07.34\00:09:08.94
something very, very
special happened last Sabbath.
00:09:08.98\00:09:13.31
Yeah, something
very special happened.
00:09:13.35\00:09:15.38
Excuse me. What was it?
00:09:15.42\00:09:18.59
So my family came to visit me
00:09:18.62\00:09:25.56
because I wanted to
rededicate myself to Jesus
00:09:25.59\00:09:29.00
and get re-baptized
and that's what I did.
00:09:29.03\00:09:32.27
And...
00:09:32.30\00:09:33.64
And who baptized you?
00:09:33.67\00:09:36.20
Damon... Sneed.
00:09:36.24\00:09:38.37
Pastor Sneed baptized me
and I asked him, I told him,
00:09:38.41\00:09:41.71
you know, like,
00:09:41.74\00:09:43.14
I think like the third
day here I realized like,
00:09:43.18\00:09:46.41
you know, God has convicted me
to change my lifestyle, really.
00:09:46.45\00:09:51.52
And I got baptized once in 2012
00:09:51.55\00:09:55.46
and I thought
that's all I had to do
00:09:55.49\00:09:58.36
was just get baptized
00:09:58.39\00:09:59.73
and God was
going to do the rest,
00:09:59.76\00:10:01.10
and you just go
to church on Sabbath
00:10:01.13\00:10:03.70
and, you know, you participate
00:10:03.73\00:10:05.93
as much as you can
and I had forgotten that,
00:10:05.97\00:10:10.01
you know, God wants us
to worship Him, and pray,
00:10:10.04\00:10:14.34
and be active in our
faith, in our journey,
00:10:14.38\00:10:19.68
in our spiritual
journey with Him.
00:10:19.71\00:10:21.18
Like be really
active and I said,
00:10:21.22\00:10:24.05
"How can I do that
00:10:24.09\00:10:25.42
if I don't even
follow His original diet?"
00:10:25.45\00:10:29.39
He has plan for us, you know,
00:10:29.42\00:10:31.06
and that's what
he wants, you know.
00:10:31.09\00:10:32.43
So I made that
decision to get re-baptized
00:10:32.46\00:10:36.00
and that was the
biggest... Excellent.
00:10:36.03\00:10:37.60
'Cause I feel like I
can't do this without...
00:10:37.63\00:10:40.24
We can't do this. We
can't do anything alone.
00:10:40.27\00:10:43.44
We need God in
everything that we do
00:10:43.47\00:10:45.21
and I know, with
Him, this is possible.
00:10:45.24\00:10:48.44
This is going to work.
00:10:48.48\00:10:49.94
That's the best
prose I've ever heard.
00:10:49.98\00:10:52.41
That was
beautiful, thank you so much.
00:10:52.45\00:10:54.25
Thank you. And
thank you for your time.
00:10:54.28\00:10:56.52
I know that you're going
home tonight or in the morning.
00:10:56.55\00:10:59.55
In the morning. Yeah.
00:10:59.59\00:11:00.92
Yeah. Well, thank you, brother.
00:11:00.96\00:11:02.29
Thank you. And God bless you.
00:11:02.32\00:11:03.69
Thank you for
everything that you did too
00:11:03.73\00:11:05.79
'cause when I spoke
to you on the phone,
00:11:05.83\00:11:08.00
you just made my day that
day, you didn't even know,
00:11:08.03\00:11:10.60
I was so happy
when I talked to you.
00:11:10.63\00:11:11.97
And you said, "Just come,
just come, you're covered so."
00:11:12.00\00:11:16.34
All right, brother.
00:11:16.37\00:11:17.77
Thank you. You're welcome.
00:11:17.81\00:11:19.47
And, friends, don't go away
because Dr. Lukens is up next.
00:11:19.51\00:11:23.48
Every year in America,
00:11:27.88\00:11:29.22
there are over
one million deaths
00:11:29.25\00:11:30.59
because of type 2
diabetes and chronic obesity.
00:11:30.62\00:11:33.49
This includes heart
attacks and strokes.
00:11:33.52\00:11:35.79
That's six and a half
747s crashing every day.
00:11:35.82\00:11:39.36
What's even more surprising
is that the fix is easy.
00:11:39.39\00:11:42.80
It's your lifestyle.
00:11:42.83\00:11:44.17
Wouldn't it be nice
00:11:44.20\00:11:45.53
if you could actually add
quality years to your life
00:11:45.57\00:11:47.47
rather than dying
one organ at a time?
00:11:47.50\00:11:50.44
Obesity and diabetes
00:11:50.47\00:11:51.81
are the cause of over
million deaths per year.
00:11:51.84\00:11:54.71
Most diseases are reversible
00:11:54.74\00:11:56.75
because most diseases
are lifestyle diseases,
00:11:56.78\00:11:59.71
especially type 2
diabetes and chronic obesity.
00:11:59.75\00:12:03.15
Seriously now,
they can be reversed
00:12:03.18\00:12:05.32
and the quality of
your life can be renewed.
00:12:05.35\00:12:09.02

00:12:15.20\00:12:16.67
in the first few
days of our program
00:12:16.70\00:12:18.77
and you'll be on
the road to a better
00:12:18.80\00:12:20.40
more robust quality of life.
00:12:20.44\00:12:22.90
The NEWSTART programs
are simple and effective.
00:12:22.94\00:12:27.94
Welcome back, friends.
00:12:27.98\00:12:29.31
In our studio, Dr.
Rich Lukens with the grip.
00:12:29.34\00:12:33.18
Man, I got the memo. Yeah!
00:12:33.21\00:12:35.78
We're twins today.
Well, look at this.
00:12:35.82\00:12:38.35
You know, we used to wear
ties but today, it's so hot.
00:12:38.39\00:12:41.62
It is too hot
Yeah. It's too hot.
00:12:41.66\00:12:43.96
So what are we
talking about? Nice shirt.
00:12:43.99\00:12:49.46
We're talking about Matt. Yup.
00:12:49.50\00:12:51.90
And Matt is
such a wonderful guy.
00:12:51.93\00:12:55.10
I really enjoy
the energy with him.
00:12:55.14\00:12:58.24
I felt better
after the interview.
00:12:58.27\00:13:00.68
Exactly.
00:13:00.71\00:13:02.04
You know, some of
these are drained.
00:13:02.08\00:13:03.41
You can't imagine how excited
I was when I saw his results.
00:13:03.45\00:13:07.65
Awesome.
00:13:07.68\00:13:09.02
His triglycerides went from 430,
00:13:09.05\00:13:12.59
which means he's got
the metabolic syndrome,
00:13:12.62\00:13:16.19
with infiltration
into his liver with fat
00:13:16.22\00:13:19.86
and all of the stuff around,
00:13:19.89\00:13:21.83
and his blood sugars
were just way out of control.
00:13:21.86\00:13:25.57
Well, you didn't
tell me what they went to,
00:13:25.60\00:13:27.30
the triglycerides.
00:13:27.34\00:13:28.77
Oh, okay. From 430 to what?
00:13:28.80\00:13:31.04
180. No!
00:13:31.07\00:13:32.54
That's almost normal.
00:13:32.57\00:13:34.21
Wow.
00:13:34.24\00:13:35.81
And then his blood
sugars were always...
00:13:35.84\00:13:39.51
In the morning, when
they should be the lowest,
00:13:39.55\00:13:41.78
they were in the high 200s
00:13:41.82\00:13:43.55
and they would
be in the 400s too
00:13:43.59\00:13:45.12
depending on what he'd
eaten the night before.
00:13:45.15\00:13:48.42
And then at night, you know,
after he'd eaten and so forth,
00:13:48.46\00:13:52.59
he said he'd just
come home just dragging,
00:13:52.63\00:13:55.30
he'd eat, and then
he'd just go to bed.
00:13:55.33\00:13:56.97
He just... And you know what?
00:13:57.00\00:13:58.57
His wife told me, it
was something interesting,
00:13:58.60\00:14:01.10
she said, "You know, he's
a lot softer than he was."
00:14:01.14\00:14:05.24
Yeah.
00:14:05.27\00:14:06.61
She was just thrilled, you know.
00:14:06.64\00:14:07.98
Oh, she was just...
00:14:08.01\00:14:09.34
'Cause she just said,
00:14:09.38\00:14:10.71
"You know, why
don't you see the doctor?"
00:14:10.75\00:14:12.55
But anyway, he
didn't know what it was,
00:14:12.58\00:14:14.65
and his blood sugars were,
00:14:14.68\00:14:17.09
you know, it was over
500 when they diagnosed him.
00:14:17.12\00:14:20.56
Wow.
00:14:20.59\00:14:21.92
In fact, did he
tell you that one time
00:14:21.96\00:14:23.32
they wouldn't even
let him go home from work?
00:14:23.36\00:14:25.59
They called the
ambulance. That's right.
00:14:25.63\00:14:27.46
Yeah, so anyway...
00:14:27.50\00:14:29.30
So that was really something.
00:14:29.33\00:14:31.33
But at the last,
this is the kicker.
00:14:31.37\00:14:36.04
He was on 360 units of insulin.
00:14:36.07\00:14:39.97
And a normal guy, you
know, in a normal adult,
00:14:40.01\00:14:43.71
maybe it's 40 to 60,
00:14:43.75\00:14:46.31
he was on six
times the normal amount.
00:14:46.35\00:14:49.12
I said, "What
does your doctor says?"
00:14:49.15\00:14:50.49
He said, "No, no. He
said, "Go to the pharmacist"
00:14:50.52\00:14:53.92
and he didn't have time.
00:14:53.96\00:14:55.62
He says, "Go to the
pharmacist and the pharmacist
00:14:55.66\00:14:58.13
will tell you how
to do this, you know."
00:14:58.16\00:14:59.73
Oh, man.
00:14:59.76\00:15:01.10
I tell you, medical
care is just crazy right now.
00:15:01.13\00:15:03.13
It really is, except here. Yeah.
00:15:03.16\00:15:06.00
Well, then when they leave,
00:15:06.03\00:15:07.54
they shouldn't need
a lot of medical care.
00:15:07.57\00:15:09.27
They shouldn't.
That's true. Yeah.
00:15:09.30\00:15:11.71
So what they've been
spending on medical care
00:15:11.74\00:15:13.74
will take care of
the cost of the program.
00:15:13.78\00:15:16.91
Easy.
00:15:16.95\00:15:18.28
So I'm going to
stay in touch with Matt,
00:15:18.31\00:15:21.45
I promised him I would. Yeah.
00:15:21.48\00:15:23.52
And I know you
will as well. Mm-hmm.
00:15:23.55\00:15:25.92
And so he can't wait to get home
00:15:25.95\00:15:28.09
to share this with everybody.
00:15:28.12\00:15:30.03
He was so excited
during our interview today,
00:15:30.06\00:15:33.29
you know, he's just
bubbling, he's all rosy and...
00:15:33.33\00:15:36.33
Yeah. I'm happy for him.
00:15:36.36\00:15:38.93
But let's talk
about reversing diabetes,
00:15:38.97\00:15:41.67
just for a moment, if we can.
00:15:41.70\00:15:44.01
You know, there are a
lot of health professionals
00:15:44.04\00:15:48.01
that are now getting on board
00:15:48.04\00:15:49.64
with what we've been
doing here for almost 40 years.
00:15:49.68\00:15:53.68
And some of them are, who?
00:15:53.72\00:15:55.52
Dr. Esselstyn for sure,
00:15:55.55\00:15:58.02
Dr. Neal Barnard, who else?
00:15:58.05\00:16:03.29
World famous doctors.
00:16:03.32\00:16:04.79
Well, John McDougal.
00:16:04.83\00:16:08.03
John McDougal.
00:16:08.06\00:16:09.40
There's a guy in Virginia,
and I give that handout
00:16:09.43\00:16:14.07
because I don't
want the people to think
00:16:14.10\00:16:16.07
that we're just some
yahoos in the pine trees.
00:16:16.10\00:16:21.01
But...
00:16:21.04\00:16:22.51
And they realized
that, but what bothers me
00:16:22.54\00:16:25.91
is a huge pushback
from the medical people.
00:16:25.95\00:16:30.62
Yeah, I don't know
what that's all about.
00:16:30.65\00:16:32.72
Maybe they just
don't understand.
00:16:32.75\00:16:34.86
I know that if I'm
out in the world out there
00:16:34.89\00:16:37.79
and I break a leg,
00:16:37.83\00:16:39.16
I want to go see
a doctor real quick.
00:16:39.19\00:16:40.53
Yeah.
00:16:40.56\00:16:41.90
But for what we're
talking about here...
00:16:41.93\00:16:43.57
But the thing is that
00:16:43.60\00:16:45.37
they are told not to believe it.
00:16:45.40\00:16:47.24
And then when you
read the different things
00:16:47.27\00:16:49.57
and the
pharmaceutical guys come around,
00:16:49.60\00:16:51.97
they reinforce the fact
00:16:52.01\00:16:54.01
that their blood
sugars have to be normal.
00:16:54.04\00:16:57.28
And if they're not normal
00:16:57.31\00:16:59.05
then they're going to
suffer all kinds of stuff
00:16:59.08\00:17:01.35
and they won't do well,
00:17:01.38\00:17:03.75
but the opposite
is really the truth.
00:17:03.79\00:17:06.39
Let it run a little bit higher,
00:17:06.42\00:17:07.96
especially, if
you're on insulin,
00:17:07.99\00:17:10.26
and you can
shorten your life by 20%
00:17:10.29\00:17:13.33
by forcing it down
with, especially, insulin
00:17:13.36\00:17:16.90
and the other
medication to do that.
00:17:16.93\00:17:19.13
Now have you ever
seen a change like Matt's
00:17:19.17\00:17:22.84
where that
insulin is dropped away
00:17:22.87\00:17:25.14
and his numbers are dropped?
00:17:25.17\00:17:27.48
I mean, it's almost like...
00:17:27.51\00:17:29.51
It's almost unbelievable.
00:17:29.54\00:17:30.91
Well, you know what
it was? What was it?
00:17:30.95\00:17:32.51
He was doing...
00:17:32.55\00:17:33.88
Even in the heat,
00:17:33.92\00:17:35.25
they get up really
early in the morning,
00:17:35.28\00:17:36.62
a group of them,
and they would do...
00:17:36.65\00:17:38.72
During the day, they would
do 10 to 15 miles of walking.
00:17:38.75\00:17:43.06
Yeah, and... But, I
mean, he averaged 10.
00:17:43.09\00:17:45.63
He wasn't able to do
that when he first came.
00:17:45.66\00:17:47.30
So over the
whole period of time,
00:17:47.33\00:17:50.83
but coming back to this other...
00:17:50.87\00:17:53.03
Folks, you need to look up
00:17:53.07\00:17:55.80
on Facebook, Neal Barnard.
00:17:55.84\00:18:01.58
Right.
00:18:01.61\00:18:02.94
And his Physician's Committee
for Responsible Medicine,
00:18:02.98\00:18:07.22
you've got to see it.
00:18:07.25\00:18:08.72
Facebook.
00:18:08.75\00:18:10.25
It's about a 20 minute thing,
00:18:10.29\00:18:12.35
and he said his
father was a physician
00:18:12.39\00:18:15.32
and all he
could do was manage it
00:18:15.36\00:18:16.93
as his patients went downhill.
00:18:16.96\00:18:19.89
And then when they
came up with this, he said,
00:18:19.93\00:18:22.83
"There's no Type 2 that
shouldn't be able to get over."
00:18:22.86\00:18:27.47
I want to thank
you, we're out of time,
00:18:27.50\00:18:29.34
God bless you.
00:18:29.37\00:18:30.77
It's always my pleasure.
Friends, don't go away.
00:18:30.81\00:18:33.27
Dr. Nedley is up next.
00:18:33.31\00:18:34.98
When we look at the health
status of Americans today,
00:18:36.85\00:18:39.58
it's alarming to see that 60%
are either overweight or obese.
00:18:39.61\00:18:44.12
In addition, diseases
such as type 2 diabetes,
00:18:49.49\00:18:52.36
cancer, and heart
disorders are the leading cause
00:18:52.39\00:18:54.86
of so many complications
and deaths every year.
00:18:54.90\00:18:57.90
Could it have something
to do with what we eat?
00:19:02.30\00:19:04.97
After all, every
one in four Americans
00:19:05.01\00:19:07.51
visits a fast
food restaurant daily,
00:19:07.54\00:19:09.68
and with such easy
access to quick-fix foods,
00:19:09.71\00:19:13.28
we tend to forget
the poor health value
00:19:13.31\00:19:15.25
those foods actually offer.
00:19:15.28\00:19:18.15
Maybe it's the sedentary
lifestyle and lack of exercise
00:19:18.19\00:19:21.29
that we've become so accustomed
to as a media-dependant world.
00:19:21.32\00:19:25.63
Whatever the
cause of these diseases,
00:19:25.66\00:19:27.50
a solution has arrived.
00:19:27.53\00:19:31.73
The NEWSTART Lifestyle Center
offers an enriching program
00:19:31.77\00:19:35.14
where patients can
get a healing of mind,
00:19:35.17\00:19:37.37
body, and soul.
00:19:37.41\00:19:38.94
Located in the
outskirts of Sacramento,
00:19:38.97\00:19:41.44
the NEWSTART center is
situated on the beautiful campus
00:19:41.48\00:19:44.55
of Weimar Centre of
Health and Education
00:19:44.58\00:19:47.45
with scenic walking and
hiking trails all around.
00:19:47.48\00:19:51.09
With a "whole plant
foods eating whole" motto,
00:19:51.12\00:19:54.42
the NEWSTART center promotes
a healthy plant-based diet
00:19:54.46\00:19:57.53
with an emphasis
on natural foods.
00:19:57.56\00:20:00.16
The NEWSTART staff are made up
00:20:00.20\00:20:01.86
of California Board Certified
00:20:01.90\00:20:03.80
nurses, doctors,
dietitians, and therapists
00:20:03.83\00:20:07.64
who work together to
assist each patient personally.
00:20:07.67\00:20:10.97
The staff are dedicated
to each patient's success
00:20:11.01\00:20:13.68
in the program
and are always there
00:20:13.71\00:20:15.71
to guide, advise, and encourage.
00:20:15.74\00:20:18.51
In addition to a
healthy lifestyle,
00:20:18.55\00:20:20.68
NEWSTART also promotes a
healthy exercise routine.
00:20:20.72\00:20:23.75
You're both in sequence,
that's good, all right.
00:20:23.79\00:20:26.59
As part of the balance program,
there is much opportunity
00:20:26.62\00:20:29.52
to get in the fair
share of physical activity
00:20:29.56\00:20:32.13
from utilizing
our fitness center
00:20:32.16\00:20:34.40
to taking a stroll
00:20:34.43\00:20:35.76
around the
peaceful grounds of Weimar.
00:20:35.80\00:20:38.03
It's amazing what a
new start can do for you.
00:20:38.07\00:20:42.64
Welcome to NEWSTART Now.
00:20:42.67\00:20:44.21
I'm Dr. Neil Nedley,
00:20:44.24\00:20:45.57
and with me today
is Dr. Eddie Ramirez.
00:20:45.61\00:20:48.34
And there have been some
exciting things happening
00:20:48.38\00:20:51.01
at the NEWSTART program,
00:20:51.05\00:20:52.71
and scientific
journals are very interested
00:20:52.75\00:20:55.12
in the changes that
take place in the program
00:20:55.15\00:20:59.15
just coming here for 18 days,
not only during the program
00:20:59.19\00:21:03.16
but what happens
after the program.
00:21:03.19\00:21:05.53
And this is kind
of a unique study
00:21:05.56\00:21:08.66
that was
published in Obesity Reviews
00:21:08.70\00:21:12.10
in April 2016 by
Dr. Ramirez, and myself,
00:21:12.13\00:21:16.57
and other members
of the NEWSTART team.
00:21:16.60\00:21:20.41
And we also often
have students involved here
00:21:20.44\00:21:23.04
at Weimar
Institute in our studies
00:21:23.08\00:21:24.91
and that's one of
the exciting things about
00:21:24.95\00:21:26.55
being a college
student here at Weimar
00:21:26.58\00:21:28.78
as we get to see
all of these changes
00:21:28.82\00:21:30.52
and college
students get to publish
00:21:30.55\00:21:32.32
in the scientific literature.
00:21:32.35\00:21:34.39
Well, Dr.
Ramirez, today we're going
00:21:34.42\00:21:36.73
to be centering
in on a major problem
00:21:36.76\00:21:39.56
in this country
00:21:39.59\00:21:41.23
and that is of
childhood obesity.
00:21:41.26\00:21:44.90
Now a lot of people think
NEWSTART is just for adults,
00:21:44.93\00:21:49.94
but this was a
study done on 11 children
00:21:49.97\00:21:54.31
who went through
the NEWSTART program,
00:21:54.34\00:21:56.48
and they went
through due to having
00:21:56.51\00:21:59.21
pretty
significant obesity levels,
00:21:59.25\00:22:01.25
even levels of
morbid obesity in childhood.
00:22:01.28\00:22:04.32
I don't know if
you've seen these people
00:22:04.35\00:22:05.79
but if you go to Walmart
00:22:05.82\00:22:07.32
or if you go to
any mall in America,
00:22:07.36\00:22:09.62
you're going to see kids
that are very overweight.
00:22:09.66\00:22:13.66
And it sets them up
for so many problems
00:22:13.70\00:22:16.43
by the time
they're 25 or 30 even.
00:22:16.46\00:22:20.07
Their risk of death from emboli
00:22:20.10\00:22:22.17
and all sorts of things goes up.
00:22:22.20\00:22:24.34
And so I'm very interested
00:22:24.37\00:22:25.71
about these 11
patients and obviously,
00:22:25.74\00:22:27.74
Obesity Reviews
was very interested
00:22:27.78\00:22:29.58
as well as they accepted
the study for publication.
00:22:29.61\00:22:32.55
What did we find out
about these 11 patients?
00:22:32.58\00:22:34.78
So tell us about them first
00:22:34.82\00:22:37.59
before they came
in to the program?
00:22:37.62\00:22:38.95
That's right.
00:22:38.99\00:22:40.32
Well, these were a
small group of patients
00:22:40.36\00:22:43.06
that have gone
through the NEWSTART program.
00:22:43.09\00:22:45.46
And as you said so,
00:22:45.49\00:22:46.83
it's because they had some
significant health problems
00:22:46.86\00:22:50.77
and we were showing here that
when they came to the program,
00:22:50.80\00:22:54.74
they were able to
decrease their body mass index,
00:22:54.77\00:22:58.37
and also their overall
weight, and also other markers.
00:22:58.41\00:23:02.58
We were also checking things
00:23:02.61\00:23:04.51
like cholesterols
and triglycerides.
00:23:04.55\00:23:07.92
And this type of
markers also improve
00:23:07.95\00:23:10.92
as they improve
also their weight.
00:23:10.95\00:23:13.79
And on average, the
loss was of seven pounds
00:23:13.82\00:23:18.09
which may not
sound, like, humungous
00:23:18.13\00:23:20.20
but it's actually very good.
00:23:20.23\00:23:22.00
We don't want that type of
very, very dramatic weight loss
00:23:22.03\00:23:26.57
because that
person will gain it again.
00:23:26.60\00:23:29.20
But in this way, if you
can keep up that change,
00:23:29.24\00:23:32.77
you will keep losing
weight and feeling better.
00:23:32.81\00:23:36.24
And this is something
that I personally have seen
00:23:36.28\00:23:38.88
on the medical consultation.
00:23:38.91\00:23:41.25
I have gotten mothers
00:23:41.28\00:23:42.95
that bring their
child to me and say,
00:23:42.98\00:23:45.62
"Doctor, I think
my son has parasites.
00:23:45.65\00:23:48.92
Look how thin he is."
00:23:48.96\00:23:50.39
I checked him and
he is perfectly fine,
00:23:50.43\00:23:53.26
he has normal weight
00:23:53.29\00:23:54.73
and that weight corresponds
to the normal height.
00:23:54.76\00:23:59.43
Why is the mother concerned?
00:23:59.47\00:24:01.17
Because most of
the other children
00:24:01.20\00:24:03.00
that he plays with are...
00:24:03.04\00:24:05.27
They don't have a normal weight,
00:24:05.31\00:24:07.21
and compared to
them he looks too thin.
00:24:07.24\00:24:10.18
So we actually are
changing the definition
00:24:10.21\00:24:12.55
of what's normal
to call it abnormal
00:24:12.58\00:24:15.68
and what is not
normal to call it normal,
00:24:15.72\00:24:17.95
and that's
something that is worrisome.
00:24:17.99\00:24:19.99
Okay, so seven
pounds in 18 days,
00:24:20.02\00:24:23.59
so that's a pound about
00:24:23.63\00:24:25.36
every two to three
days that they lost.
00:24:25.39\00:24:29.16
And if they continue
on this program at home,
00:24:29.20\00:24:32.97
our research
shows they will continue
00:24:33.00\00:24:35.07
to lose weight at
about that same pace.
00:24:35.10\00:24:38.51
And so, you know,
00:24:38.54\00:24:40.11
if you're losing a
couple of pounds a week,
00:24:40.14\00:24:42.04
which is a good
healthy thing to do.
00:24:42.08\00:24:45.01
You know, in a year's time,
00:24:45.05\00:24:47.02
you're down well
over a 100 pounds.
00:24:47.05\00:24:49.05
And that's the idea.
00:24:49.08\00:24:50.42
The idea is not just
a temporary improvement
00:24:50.45\00:24:53.92
but we want the person
to improve permanently,
00:24:53.96\00:24:57.33
to change the diet permanently.
00:24:57.36\00:24:59.09
That's why we're
going to teach you
00:24:59.13\00:25:00.63
how to cook at home,
00:25:00.66\00:25:02.33
we're going to give you
plenty of health lectures
00:25:02.36\00:25:04.27
so you can understand why
we're proposing the changes
00:25:04.30\00:25:07.60
that we are proposing.
00:25:07.64\00:25:09.44
And not only that, some of...
00:25:09.47\00:25:12.41
This number is the
average, which means,
00:25:12.44\00:25:14.78
some actually
went a little bit more,
00:25:14.81\00:25:16.64
some went
actually a little bit less,
00:25:16.68\00:25:18.95
but the idea is
for you to keep going.
00:25:18.98\00:25:22.08
And another paper
that we published,
00:25:22.12\00:25:24.25
we showed that once you've
reached your normal weight,
00:25:24.29\00:25:26.89
you'll no longer
continue losing that weight
00:25:26.92\00:25:29.42
and you will
maintain that healthy weight.
00:25:29.46\00:25:31.89
That's exciting.
00:25:31.93\00:25:33.26
Thanks for being
here, Dr. Ramirez.
00:25:33.29\00:25:34.73
And for NEWSTART
Now, I'm Dr. Neal Nedley.
00:25:34.76\00:25:37.63
Join us again next week.
00:25:37.67\00:25:39.00
Today, we'll be teaching you
00:25:45.57\00:25:46.91
how to make an
all fruit smoothie.
00:25:46.94\00:25:48.94
And this recipe calls
00:25:48.98\00:25:50.58
for one can of your coconut milk
00:25:50.61\00:25:52.65
that you can get
at your grocery store.
00:25:52.68\00:25:55.75
Two to four frozen
bananas, depending on size,
00:25:55.78\00:25:58.95
about four cups.
00:25:58.99\00:26:00.32
Two cups of your
frozen strawberries
00:26:00.36\00:26:03.06
and one teaspoon of
your vanilla extract.
00:26:03.09\00:26:05.69
And the vanilla extract
that we're gonna be using
00:26:05.73\00:26:07.33
is alcohol-free
because this is a smoothie
00:26:07.36\00:26:09.53
that we're not
gonna cook, obviously,
00:26:09.56\00:26:11.70
and you won't burn
off the alcohol in vanilla
00:26:11.73\00:26:13.90
that you'd typically get.
00:26:13.94\00:26:15.27
But you can find this
at a health food store,
00:26:15.30\00:26:17.11
some grocery
stores carry that as well.
00:26:17.14\00:26:19.34
Okay, so it's so simple.
00:26:19.37\00:26:20.81
The materials that you'll
need is a high speed blender
00:26:20.84\00:26:24.51
and then just a measuring cup.
00:26:24.55\00:26:26.68
Okay, so I'm gonna go ahead
and add all these ingredients
00:26:26.72\00:26:29.52
to my blender.
00:26:29.55\00:26:30.99
Coconut milk,
incidentally, is really healthy.
00:26:38.43\00:26:41.20
It has caprylic
acid and lauric acid,
00:26:41.23\00:26:44.67
and what you really
need to know about that
00:26:44.70\00:26:46.30
is that it's really
good for your immune system.
00:26:46.33\00:26:49.30
I'm gonna add my
frozen strawberries here.
00:26:49.34\00:26:53.01
And that's the other
thing, you could use just fresh
00:26:53.04\00:26:55.84
but you'd want to get
kind of a ice consistency
00:26:55.88\00:26:59.51
so you'd want to add
some fresh ice to this.
00:26:59.55\00:27:03.15
Okay, one teaspoon
of my vanilla extract.
00:27:03.18\00:27:06.32
And I'm gonna go ahead
and just process this on high
00:27:06.35\00:27:08.26
until everything
is nice and creamy.
00:27:08.29\00:27:10.09
And there you have it,
00:27:20.77\00:27:22.10
your all fruit
smoothie with some coconut milk.
00:27:22.14\00:27:25.04
I'm gonna show
you what I would do.
00:27:25.07\00:27:26.84
I would put this
is in parfait glass
00:27:26.88\00:27:28.91
or any kind of glass,
00:27:28.94\00:27:31.01
and then I would add
some beautiful granola
00:27:31.05\00:27:33.95
that you made and
just top that off.
00:27:33.98\00:27:37.15
And you can get our
recipe on the website,
00:27:37.19\00:27:39.92
and then just put any
kind of fruit in there.
00:27:39.95\00:27:41.52
I'm just gonna show
you what I would do.
00:27:41.56\00:27:43.12
Put some strawberry in there,
00:27:43.16\00:27:44.49
you could add
some fresh blueberries,
00:27:44.53\00:27:45.99
even some bananas
would be delicious.
00:27:46.03\00:27:47.90
And this is a gorgeous breakfast
00:27:47.93\00:27:49.93
and now you got...
00:27:49.96\00:27:51.30
You could have this for dessert.
00:27:51.33\00:27:52.67
So you could do the same thing
and serve it to your family.
00:27:52.70\00:27:54.67
Well, friends,
that's it for today.
00:27:55.94\00:27:57.61
But join us next
week for another episode.
00:27:57.64\00:28:00.81
