Yeah, yeah. 00:01:49.57\00:01:51.41 No, I didn't know. 00:01:51.44\00:01:53.14 But tell me and our viewers what happened. 00:01:53.17\00:01:58.75 So I guess the best way to describe is, 00:01:58.78\00:02:02.48 you know, I went through some grief. 00:02:02.52\00:02:04.32 And when we... 00:02:04.35\00:02:06.29 my husband was killed, you know. 00:02:06.32\00:02:07.79 And going through that process, 00:02:07.82\00:02:09.59 I stopped taking care of myself. 00:02:09.62\00:02:11.76 And I think I turned to late nights, 00:02:11.79\00:02:15.76 you know, bad eating habits, 00:02:15.80\00:02:17.43 and I was going through school at that time too, 00:02:17.47\00:02:20.07 so I just was bombarded with stuff. 00:02:20.10\00:02:23.00 And I remember going to my boss and saying, 00:02:23.04\00:02:25.14 "I need a new start." 00:02:25.17\00:02:27.18 And so I did. 00:02:27.21\00:02:28.54 I went through the NEWSTART program in January and... 00:02:28.58\00:02:32.21 Let's back up just a second. 00:02:32.25\00:02:35.18 Your boss happens to be Steve Brownell, 00:02:35.22\00:02:39.05 who is the director of NEWSTART. 00:02:39.09\00:02:41.12 Right? Yes, yes. 00:02:41.16\00:02:42.49 So you are what? What is your position? 00:02:42.52\00:02:46.03 I'm the cooking instructor. You are cooking instructor. 00:02:46.06\00:02:48.03 Yeah, yeah, I taste all the food. 00:02:48.06\00:02:50.30 Who would know better 00:02:50.33\00:02:52.23 on what to eat than a cooking instructor. 00:02:52.27\00:02:53.94 Yeah, exactly. 00:02:53.97\00:02:55.60 And, you know, the truth is, 00:02:55.64\00:02:57.21 I knew what to eat, I didn't know how to eat it, 00:02:57.24\00:03:01.54 which is interesting because we can even... 00:03:01.58\00:03:03.95 You know, temperance, 00:03:03.98\00:03:05.38 the NEWSTART temperance principal says, 00:03:05.41\00:03:08.95 "Don't do too much of a good thing 00:03:08.98\00:03:11.02 and know how to use it when you do use it," right? 00:03:11.05\00:03:13.56 So food can be a medicine, it can also be a poison. 00:03:13.59\00:03:16.83 Amen. Yeah. 00:03:16.86\00:03:18.19 And so I was eating late at night, 00:03:18.23\00:03:19.76 and wasn't walking like I should. 00:03:19.79\00:03:23.57 And so just having two meals a day 00:03:23.60\00:03:27.70 and repositioning them changed everything for me. 00:03:27.74\00:03:31.01 And then the walking was like, wow, 00:03:31.04\00:03:33.88 because it completely changed my life. 00:03:33.91\00:03:35.91 And you know I was thinking Moses, 00:03:35.94\00:03:38.38 when they left Egypt, 00:03:38.41\00:03:40.28 God took them through the NEWSTART program, right? 00:03:40.32\00:03:42.68 'Cause they walked, 00:03:42.72\00:03:44.05 they ate manna which is a vegan diet, 00:03:44.09\00:03:46.59 they had temperance, I mean, 00:03:46.62\00:03:47.96 it was just the whole NEWSTART program, and so 00:03:47.99\00:03:50.13 that really is the key for me 'cause when I exercised, 00:03:50.16\00:03:53.60 I got fresh air, I got sunshine, 00:03:53.63\00:03:56.16 I drank water 'cause I brought water with me, 00:03:56.20\00:03:58.63 I got time to pray. 00:03:58.67\00:04:00.34 And so really I had to work on getting to bed on time, 00:04:00.37\00:04:03.10 and eating the right time, 00:04:03.14\00:04:05.21 and the right food, and walking. 00:04:05.24\00:04:07.14 Okay, so... It's monumental. 00:04:07.18\00:04:08.78 You went through the 18 days or 21, 00:04:08.81\00:04:11.68 whatever it was, 00:04:11.71\00:04:13.05 and then you went back to work, 00:04:13.08\00:04:17.79 but you continued. 00:04:17.82\00:04:19.15 Yes. 00:04:19.19\00:04:20.52 You continued following the principles. 00:04:20.56\00:04:22.52 Then I'd see you every now and then 00:04:22.56\00:04:24.19 and you kind of give me a smile and say, 00:04:24.23\00:04:27.50 "And more," or whatever. 00:04:27.53\00:04:28.86 Yeah, yeah. Yeah. 00:04:28.90\00:04:30.23 So... It just started happening. 00:04:30.27\00:04:31.60 Yeah, but now you just, like, such a motivator to our guests 00:04:31.63\00:04:36.57 because I'm sure you are sharing your story, 00:04:36.60\00:04:39.71 I hope you are. 00:04:39.74\00:04:41.08 You know, what was really important to me was, you know, 00:04:41.11\00:04:44.35 I work here, so access to have food made for me was easy. 00:04:44.38\00:04:48.98 But I said, "I want to go home and really do this." 00:04:49.02\00:04:51.85 And so I mapped out a whole plan 00:04:51.89\00:04:54.06 on what I did when I went forward. 00:04:54.09\00:04:57.23 I went through the 18-day program 00:04:57.26\00:04:58.89 but I knew I had to get to day 21. 00:04:58.93\00:05:01.16 And once I got to day 21, 00:05:01.20\00:05:02.63 it was, like, I knew that was my lifestyle. 00:05:02.66\00:05:05.43 That was it. 00:05:05.47\00:05:06.80 And I don't really care about the scale 00:05:06.84\00:05:08.34 'cause I know that this is my life. 00:05:08.37\00:05:11.47 Yeah, that's easy for you to say 00:05:11.51\00:05:13.17 'cause you've lost all this weight now 00:05:13.21\00:05:15.51 and you are so trim. 00:05:15.54\00:05:16.88 I don't... I don't like to say lose, 00:05:16.91\00:05:18.25 I don't like to say lose or on 00:05:18.28\00:05:19.61 because what happened when you lose your keys, right? 00:05:19.65\00:05:21.28 You want to go find it again. Exactly. 00:05:21.32\00:05:23.18 And you don't want to lose... I release it. 00:05:23.22\00:05:25.05 Okay, how do you deal with that 00:05:25.09\00:05:27.02 on a conscious or subconscious level? 00:05:27.06\00:05:30.23 What do you say to your brain? 00:05:30.26\00:05:31.59 I just say, "This is my life 00:05:31.63\00:05:33.56 and I'm going to treat my body 00:05:33.60\00:05:35.10 as I would God wants me to treat it." 00:05:35.13\00:05:37.97 And so I think 00:05:38.00\00:05:39.33 when we don't treat our bodies right, 00:05:39.37\00:05:41.20 they don't treat us right. 00:05:41.24\00:05:44.24 You know, so we have to... 00:05:44.27\00:05:46.14 we owe it to God to treat ourselves right, 00:05:46.17\00:05:48.68 love our neighbor as we love ourselves, 00:05:48.71\00:05:50.85 and feed ourselves good food, 00:05:50.88\00:05:52.51 and say good thing to ourselves, 00:05:52.55\00:05:54.18 and so that was the change. 00:05:54.22\00:05:56.32 That was the change for me 00:05:56.35\00:05:58.05 and just putting it into practice, so... 00:05:58.09\00:06:00.22 It's so good to hear you say all this. 00:06:00.26\00:06:01.76 I mean, it's the truth. Yes. 00:07:09.32\00:07:10.66 Wow. I weigh less. 00:07:10.69\00:07:12.03 I weigh about what I weighed in high school. 00:07:12.06\00:07:14.50 Oh, you just gave it away. 00:07:14.53\00:07:16.56 I know, but you really can't find out. 00:07:16.60\00:07:18.33 I can't say it. I stopped drinking. 00:08:18.46\00:08:20.66 I've reversed my diabetes, I lost a hundred pounds, 00:08:20.70\00:08:25.10 all these things happened, but I didn't do it. 00:08:25.13\00:08:28.00 Yes. Praise God. 00:08:28.04\00:08:29.60 You know, there was a lot of fear 00:08:29.64\00:08:31.91 in my space at that time, fear of death. 00:08:31.94\00:08:34.44 Wow. That was one of my motivators. 00:08:34.48\00:08:36.11 Wow. I didn't want to die. 00:08:36.14\00:08:37.71 Right. I was too old to die. 00:08:37.75\00:08:39.45 Wow. Yeah. 00:13:13.99\00:13:15.72 And so she really had doubts 00:13:15.76\00:13:17.09 about whether it could work for her. 00:13:17.13\00:13:18.46 Yeah. 00:13:18.49\00:13:19.83 And by the grace of God, It has worked and worked well. 00:13:19.86\00:13:22.53 You know, I have seen her lose weight, 00:13:22.56\00:13:26.97 I have seen her have more energy. 00:13:27.00\00:13:31.94 When she comes and teaches after she gets done, 00:13:31.97\00:13:34.21 several times she'll go walking on the trails here on campus. 00:13:34.24\00:13:38.35 So sometimes she'll walk by our house. 00:13:38.38\00:13:41.05 And, you know, 00:13:41.08\00:13:42.42 it's just fantastic to see how well she's doing. 00:13:42.45\00:13:45.15 And she's even come back 00:13:45.19\00:13:46.55 to see me in the clinic a few times, 00:13:46.59\00:13:48.69 and I can testify that 00:13:48.72\00:13:51.13 she is a different woman today than she was six months ago. 00:13:51.16\00:13:55.73 I can certainly notice that. 00:13:55.76\00:13:57.27 I want to touch on this weight loss. 00:13:57.30\00:14:00.14 She shared during our interview today 00:14:00.17\00:14:03.10 that she weighs less today 00:14:03.14\00:14:07.14 than she did when she went to West Point. 00:14:07.18\00:14:09.24 Wow, that's amazing. 00:14:09.28\00:14:10.75 And now, then you tell me 00:14:10.78\00:14:12.15 she used to jump out of airplanes. 00:14:12.18\00:14:14.12 I don't know all that, she was a Ranger? 00:14:14.15\00:14:16.32 Yeah, I think she was a Ranger, 00:14:16.35\00:14:17.69 but I know she told me 00:14:17.72\00:14:19.05 she used to jump out of airplanes. 00:14:19.09\00:14:20.42 Well, you know, she's tough. Oh yeah, oh yeah. 00:14:20.46\00:14:22.32 And she's not only a pretty girl, 00:14:22.36\00:14:24.49 she's smart. 00:14:24.53\00:14:25.86 Absolutely. 00:14:25.89\00:14:27.23 And tough as nails. Yeah. 00:14:27.26\00:14:28.66 If anybody is going to do this program and make it work, 00:14:28.70\00:14:32.53 I would think someone like that would. 00:14:32.57\00:14:34.54 Right. 'Cause she's got brains. 00:14:34.57\00:14:36.71 Yeah. You just have to do it. 00:14:45.78\00:14:47.55 She accepted what we were sharing, 00:14:47.58\00:14:50.25 and she took it to heart, and she started living it 00:14:50.29\00:14:54.46 because it's a lifestyle. Yes. Thank you so much. 00:22:59.41\00:23:01.58 Don't go away, friends, Dr. Nedley is up next. 00:23:01.61\00:23:04.81 Welcome to NEWSTART Now. 00:23:39.91\00:23:41.75 Today I have with me Doctor Eddie Ramirez, 00:23:41.78\00:23:45.05 one of the researchers and physicians 00:23:45.09\00:23:47.32 here at Weimar Institute. 00:23:47.36\00:23:49.49 And of course, Weimar owns the trademark of NEWSTART. 00:23:49.52\00:23:54.13 And of course, many of you, 00:23:54.16\00:23:56.46 Hopefully, know what that acronym stands for, 00:23:56.50\00:23:58.77 Nutrition, exercise, water, sunlight, 00:23:58.80\00:24:02.24 temperance, air, rest, and trust in divine power. 00:24:02.27\00:24:06.11 But, lately, Dr. Ramirez and others, 00:24:06.14\00:24:08.81 including some students and other physicians, 00:24:08.84\00:24:11.48 have been doing a lot of research 00:24:11.51\00:24:13.28 on the patients 00:24:13.31\00:24:14.78 that comes through the NEWSTART program. 00:24:14.82\00:24:17.85 And there is a recent study 00:24:17.89\00:24:20.49 that came out of NEWSTART 00:24:20.52\00:24:23.93 called intensive lifestyle 00:24:23.96\00:24:25.93 interventions improve exercise, 00:24:25.96\00:24:28.46 tolerance of all participants. 00:24:28.50\00:24:31.63 And of course, that's exciting 00:24:31.67\00:24:33.20 because there have been a lot of participants come through 00:24:33.23\00:24:36.20 the NEWSTART program here at Weimar, 00:24:36.24\00:24:38.21 primarily due to health problems 00:24:38.24\00:24:39.84 or obesity problems. 00:24:39.87\00:24:41.21 Tell us a little bit about what you found in this study, 00:24:41.24\00:24:43.68 Dr. Ramirez. 00:24:43.71\00:24:45.05 Yeah, this is a fascinating study. 00:24:45.08\00:24:46.58 There is a marker called METS, 00:24:46.61\00:24:50.89 which tells us how fit a person is. 00:24:50.92\00:24:54.52 And studies show that 00:24:54.56\00:24:55.89 if you reach a METS of 10 or more, 00:24:55.92\00:25:00.26 your probability of dying, 00:25:00.30\00:25:02.10 your probability of getting sick decreases. 00:25:02.13\00:25:05.53 And what we found here is that on average 00:25:05.57\00:25:08.80 when the patients came here, they came with a METS of 7.9, 00:25:08.84\00:25:13.04 not a very good one, you know, not a very good one. 00:25:13.07\00:25:15.61 And by the end of the 18 days, 00:25:15.64\00:25:18.51 that number had increased to a 9.5, 00:25:18.55\00:25:22.45 very close to that 10. 00:25:22.48\00:25:24.92 Nice. 00:25:24.95\00:25:26.29 In just 18 days, 00:25:26.32\00:25:27.96 then I can go from unfit to actually being fit. 00:25:27.99\00:25:32.56 And decreasing their mortality 00:25:32.59\00:25:35.06 and decreasing their possibility of sickness. 00:25:35.10\00:25:39.33 Yes, you know, exercise is very important 00:25:39.37\00:25:41.57 to the immune system. 00:25:41.60\00:25:42.94 It's very important to heart health. 00:25:42.97\00:25:44.57 It can even help avoid some cancers. 00:25:44.61\00:25:47.98 But it's not just exercise, 00:25:48.01\00:25:49.41 it's exercise of the point of becoming fit. 00:25:49.44\00:25:52.68 And so that's the E of NEWSTART. 00:25:52.71\00:25:56.18 That's right. And not only that, 00:25:56.22\00:25:58.22 other markers were also improving at the same time 00:25:58.25\00:26:01.42 as we publish here in this paper. 00:26:01.46\00:26:03.83 BMI, the obesity level went down, 00:26:03.86\00:26:07.50 blood pressures came down, cholesterols came down, 00:26:07.53\00:26:10.77 so this was an overall improvement 00:26:10.80\00:26:13.13 in their total health. 00:26:13.17\00:26:14.80 Great. Now explain a little bit more about this MET? 00:26:14.84\00:26:19.21 What is it that we are actually measuring exactly? 00:26:19.24\00:26:21.01 That's right. 00:26:21.04\00:26:22.38 Every patient that comes here, 00:26:22.41\00:26:24.51 we submit them to a stress test in order to check 00:26:24.55\00:26:28.42 how their heart health is and overall fitness. 00:26:28.45\00:26:31.79 And based on that stress test, that gives us that number, 00:26:31.82\00:26:37.46 the ability of the body to utilize 00:26:37.49\00:26:40.46 that oxygen in an efficient way. 00:26:40.50\00:26:43.33 So as the METS improve, 00:26:43.37\00:26:45.73 it means that the body becomes more efficient 00:26:45.77\00:26:49.10 to use the resources that we are giving them. 00:26:49.14\00:26:52.57 And as you become more fit, 00:26:52.61\00:26:57.91 it's like a car that is finely tuned, 00:26:57.95\00:27:00.82 it's able to burn the gasoline better 00:27:00.85\00:27:03.08 and throw less smoke, 00:27:03.12\00:27:04.52 something similar as an analogy 00:27:04.55\00:27:06.52 is happening in the body of these people 00:27:06.55\00:27:09.02 as they improve that important measurements of the METS. 00:27:09.06\00:27:12.53 Great. 00:27:12.56\00:27:13.90 And of course, at Weimar, 00:27:13.93\00:27:15.26 there is not only lots of fresh air and sunlight, 00:27:15.30\00:27:17.93 but there is these beautiful evergreen trees, 00:27:17.97\00:27:21.00 And, you know, just breathing in that 00:27:21.04\00:27:22.84 during exercise is kind of exhilarating, 00:27:22.87\00:27:25.31 you know, it kind of makes you feel 00:27:25.34\00:27:27.28 like you are on top of the world, 00:27:27.31\00:27:28.91 even though our elevation here is only 2,000 feet. 00:27:28.94\00:27:32.28 And also the beautiful trails, 00:27:32.31\00:27:33.85 we have so many beautiful trails 00:27:33.88\00:27:36.22 that people can explore, 00:27:36.25\00:27:37.65 and even have the opportunity of seeing 00:27:37.69\00:27:40.32 nature, and animals, and many beautiful things, 00:27:40.36\00:27:43.99 that has to do with the therapy that they are receiving. 00:27:44.03\00:27:46.76 Yes.
