Hi, friends. 00:01:11.43\00:01:12.77 And welcome to another edition of NEWSTART Now. 00:01:12.80\00:01:15.64 I'm your host Ron Giannoni. 00:01:15.67\00:01:18.54 In our studio is with me right now is Robert Smith 00:01:18.57\00:01:23.35 all the way from Grass Valley, California 00:01:23.38\00:01:25.91 which is about 20 minutes away. 00:01:25.95\00:01:28.75 Nonetheless, let's take a look at when Robert first arrived. 00:01:28.78\00:01:34.36 So I'm here to jumpstart my spiritual life 00:01:34.39\00:01:38.29 and try to deal with my health and physiology 00:01:38.33\00:01:42.16 and more nutrition, increasing focus level. 00:01:42.20\00:01:45.93 I'm like most people, 00:01:45.97\00:01:47.30 I'm addicted to sugar, and breads, and caffeine, 00:01:47.34\00:01:52.04 all the rest, I always eat that I never cook. 00:01:52.07\00:01:55.14 And I'm certain that has a profound effect 00:01:55.18\00:01:58.75 to my psyche so. 00:01:58.78\00:02:00.85 I hope that I can make a lifestyle change here and... 00:02:00.88\00:02:07.46 Welcome back, friends, in our studio, Robert. 00:02:07.49\00:02:10.29 Hey. All right, brother. 00:02:10.33\00:02:11.66 I'm okay, thank you. 00:02:11.69\00:02:13.03 Yeah, you say you're doing okay, 00:02:13.06\00:02:14.40 but I know there's you have a little few down time here. 00:02:14.43\00:02:18.60 And, you know, we can talk about the bad and the good 00:02:18.63\00:02:24.04 and just want you to relax and be who you are, you know. 00:02:24.07\00:02:28.81 But you did say some things to me before the interview 00:02:28.84\00:02:32.01 that were positive, like, how much weight you lost? 00:02:32.05\00:02:36.42 Well, I've lost between 80 and 20 pounds 00:02:36.45\00:02:38.65 that shows 20.3 officially 00:02:38.69\00:02:40.96 but I had a lot more clothes on that first day. 00:02:40.99\00:02:42.66 Okay. 00:02:42.69\00:02:44.03 And so I figured I lost about 18 pounds. 00:02:44.06\00:02:45.69 Which is primarily right here, I'm quite happy about that. 00:02:45.73\00:02:47.93 Good. So that's good news. That's good news. 00:02:47.96\00:02:50.67 Now what about numbers, medications, 00:02:50.70\00:02:54.80 how your numbers look? 00:02:54.84\00:02:56.24 Well actually, the numbers are pretty solid 00:02:56.27\00:03:00.98 coming in even though my lifestyle 00:03:01.01\00:03:02.34 has not been very healthy 00:03:02.38\00:03:03.71 in terms of the weight and such like that. 00:03:03.75\00:03:06.31 But my kidney numbers are better, 00:03:06.35\00:03:09.32 my kidney functioning numbers because the extra water I think 00:03:09.35\00:03:12.55 and high water content diet food 00:03:12.59\00:03:14.96 also made a difference there. 00:03:14.99\00:03:16.32 Yeah. But your HDL is good. 00:03:16.36\00:03:17.99 HDL'S got better, 00:03:18.03\00:03:19.73 and the bad cholesterol is lowered. 00:03:19.76\00:03:21.46 Good. So that's good news. You bet it is. 00:03:21.50\00:03:23.70 Now you said something else to me, how's your walking? 00:03:23.73\00:03:30.47 Well, walking is... 00:03:30.51\00:03:33.44 Definitely I'm more walking than when I came. 00:03:33.48\00:03:35.88 But it's a struggle. Yeah. 00:03:35.91\00:03:38.55 It depends because when the depression hits me, 00:03:38.58\00:03:41.08 I become really self-conscious and nervous and such 00:03:41.12\00:03:47.92 I don't want to be around people, 00:03:47.96\00:03:49.29 so I've kind of backed off on some. 00:03:49.32\00:03:52.49 And in the last couple of days I haven't walked much, 00:03:52.53\00:03:55.16 but I'm committed to getting back to early morning walking 00:03:55.20\00:03:57.60 'cause I have in the past. 00:03:57.63\00:03:59.50 And I remember another time 00:03:59.53\00:04:01.20 I lost a significant amount of weight 00:04:01.24\00:04:02.57 and it was usually due to a lot of walking. 00:04:02.60\00:04:05.41 Yeah. 00:04:05.44\00:04:06.78 And I found that as I started walking, 00:04:06.81\00:04:08.41 my diet changed because I realized 00:04:08.44\00:04:10.25 I was feeling better and more energy, 00:04:10.28\00:04:12.58 and I kind of was automatically less drawn to the foods 00:04:12.61\00:04:16.95 that weren't good for me. 00:04:16.99\00:04:18.49 I started not having those steamrolls 00:04:18.52\00:04:20.39 in the morning stuff like that. 00:04:20.42\00:04:22.62 It's just like when you, I find when I take care of myself 00:04:22.66\00:04:24.83 in one area of my life, it does spill over. 00:04:24.86\00:04:27.86 I think God just made us that way 00:04:27.90\00:04:30.13 'cause you start thinking more health, 00:04:30.17\00:04:31.53 in a more health conscious way, 00:04:31.57\00:04:32.90 and you want to keep improving. 00:04:32.93\00:04:34.90 You've mentioned to me 00:04:34.94\00:04:36.27 that you had been exposed to a vegan lifestyle, 00:04:36.30\00:04:40.34 but never really indulged. 00:04:40.38\00:04:44.51 What do you think of the food here? 00:04:44.55\00:04:48.42 I think that... 00:04:48.45\00:04:50.35 Truth now. It's healthy. 00:04:50.39\00:04:52.55 It's healthy. Yeah. 00:04:52.59\00:04:54.32 You don't necessarily like it 00:04:54.36\00:04:55.69 but it's healthy, is that what you do. 00:04:55.72\00:04:57.06 I tell you, I am learning from the cooking classes 00:04:57.09\00:04:59.09 which have been helpful that, 00:04:59.13\00:05:01.23 you know, by in the sauces and the things that you make, 00:05:01.26\00:05:07.64 basically six different types of taste buds 00:05:07.67\00:05:10.51 you've got the sweet, the spicy, the pungent all this 00:05:10.54\00:05:13.91 and you can find a way to include that 00:05:13.94\00:05:15.28 in most of your food 00:05:15.31\00:05:16.64 so that you're getting those taste you're used to. 00:05:16.68\00:05:19.05 And so I had hope, I gained hope 00:05:19.08\00:05:21.68 when Michelle, the cook talked about that. 00:05:21.72\00:05:26.79 And we've been making dishes, 00:05:26.82\00:05:28.16 you know, in the cooking class and... 00:05:28.19\00:05:30.56 What was your favorite dish? 00:05:30.59\00:05:31.93 Well, we made, one day we made a bean salad, 00:05:35.30\00:05:40.30 I guess it was a three bean salad, 00:05:40.34\00:05:41.67 and we had some other types of salads. 00:05:41.70\00:05:47.74 We had some chips that day and that's a pretty good day. 00:05:47.78\00:05:52.65 I discovered that you really can have 00:05:52.68\00:05:54.42 a good balance of flavor and eat healthy 00:05:54.45\00:05:57.72 because I in my mind, 00:05:57.75\00:05:59.09 I never believed that was possible. 00:05:59.12\00:06:00.62 I can tell you this after the fast, 00:06:00.66\00:06:02.12 they gave us simply the three vegetables, 00:06:02.16\00:06:04.43 the steamed broccoli, steamed cauliflower 00:06:04.46\00:06:07.03 which I've always loath. 00:06:07.06\00:06:08.43 And then some cabbage which is basically also... 00:06:08.46\00:06:13.84 And I'm used to eating cabbage but with a ham hock in there 00:06:13.87\00:06:16.71 and some butter and probably salt pepper. 00:06:16.74\00:06:19.57 They didn't give you any ham hock? 00:06:19.61\00:06:21.41 No, none came. 00:06:21.44\00:06:22.78 None came. 00:06:22.81\00:06:24.15 I mean, it was tough day. 00:06:24.18\00:06:25.88 I mean, I filled up about 10 bites 00:06:25.91\00:06:29.02 after 72 hours of fasting. 00:06:29.05\00:06:30.82 But you fasted on water and what? 00:06:30.85\00:06:33.56 Water and some of this colored parfait. 00:06:33.59\00:06:36.69 That's not what I called it 00:06:36.73\00:06:38.06 but I didn't even have any of the parfait 00:06:38.09\00:06:42.40 the final day and a half but... 00:06:42.43\00:06:46.84 Well, how was that experience? 00:06:46.87\00:06:48.47 Well, it was healthy. 00:06:48.50\00:06:51.31 I mean, it kind of got me thinking 00:06:51.34\00:06:52.84 I need to be praying more focusing on, depending on God, 00:06:52.87\00:06:56.21 and that's part of the reason for a fast 00:06:56.24\00:06:57.98 I think spiritually is to look up and go, God, 00:06:58.01\00:06:59.75 I really feel hungry, but fill my need, help me. 00:06:59.78\00:07:03.18 You know, I'm not eating right now. 00:07:03.22\00:07:06.02 And I would mandate a prayer and fasting some at our church, 00:07:06.05\00:07:09.39 I was a part of many, many years ago, 00:07:09.42\00:07:11.49 we fasted for a week. 00:07:11.53\00:07:12.96 But we began with fruit and fruit juices 00:07:12.99\00:07:15.50 and then nothing 00:07:15.53\00:07:17.20 but water for the last four days something like that. 00:07:17.23\00:07:18.67 And I did notice one real positive 00:07:18.70\00:07:22.34 and that is that my stomach shrunk 00:07:22.37\00:07:25.17 and, of course, what that means is that I fill up more quickly. 00:07:25.21\00:07:29.71 And if I can kind of learn to do the push backs 00:07:29.74\00:07:31.88 right on the edge of being full, 00:07:31.91\00:07:33.82 I don't stress so it's steady back out 00:07:33.85\00:07:35.18 so I can be full within less portions. 00:07:35.22\00:07:39.02 So that's been a positive since I've been here. 00:07:39.05\00:07:40.56 Now who has taught you all these? 00:07:40.59\00:07:41.92 Who is your doctor by the way? 00:07:41.96\00:07:43.56 Dr. Gallant. Dr. Gallant. 00:07:43.59\00:07:45.49 Yes. 00:07:45.53\00:07:46.86 How's he been for you to work with? 00:07:46.90\00:07:48.96 That's been good. 00:07:49.00\00:07:50.33 He's been, we prayed every time, 00:07:50.37\00:07:52.37 we're always praying. 00:07:52.40\00:07:53.74 He's a pretty neat guy. He is. 00:07:53.77\00:07:55.50 And part of the challenge for me has been 00:07:55.54\00:07:59.97 the depression things that hit me. 00:08:00.01\00:08:05.18 And I remember sharing our first meeting 00:08:05.21\00:08:10.72 Dr. Gallant was saying, 00:08:10.75\00:08:12.09 I'm gonna be setting an appointment 00:08:12.12\00:08:13.46 with a new psychiatrist 00:08:13.49\00:08:14.82 because I've changed insurance and he's a really good guy. 00:08:14.86\00:08:16.29 And so, you know, he's going to want to give you medication 00:08:16.32\00:08:20.56 with kind of a point of condescension 00:08:20.60\00:08:22.86 his voice as he shared that. 00:08:22.90\00:08:25.40 And I know they're not ideal, 00:08:25.43\00:08:28.67 and they have side effects and such. 00:08:28.70\00:08:31.37 But in my experience 00:08:31.41\00:08:33.61 when I'm doing well in medication, 00:08:33.64\00:08:35.08 I would be feeling better 00:08:35.11\00:08:36.44 and tend to just come off of it. 00:08:36.48\00:08:38.11 I think, well, I'm doing good, 00:08:38.15\00:08:39.48 I know it's a matter of how I think, 00:08:39.51\00:08:41.25 but I haven't been combining that two things, 00:08:41.28\00:08:44.25 I think it's important for me 00:08:44.29\00:08:45.99 not to come off the medication series 00:08:46.02\00:08:48.59 just to go to cold turkey and do it with the council, 00:08:48.62\00:08:52.66 the psychiatrist along with increasing 00:08:52.69\00:08:54.80 and bettering my diet. 00:08:54.83\00:08:56.16 I've never taken on that strategy. 00:08:56.20\00:08:58.80 I believe, I most likely could function maybe well with that. 00:08:58.83\00:09:01.47 Yeah. 00:09:01.50\00:09:02.84 But my experience I really need it. 00:09:02.87\00:09:04.61 And that's been... 00:09:04.64\00:09:07.91 you know, that's... 00:09:11.38\00:09:12.71 It's a challenge. It's been a challenge for me. 00:09:12.75\00:09:14.18 It's been a great challenge. 00:09:14.22\00:09:16.28 It's cost me and mislay in my life. 00:09:16.32\00:09:18.42 Robert, we've run out of time, 00:09:18.45\00:09:20.76 but I want to thank you for taking your time 00:09:20.79\00:09:23.69 and being willing to be interviewed and speak, 00:09:23.73\00:09:26.63 and hopefully someone watching you would help in some ways. 00:09:26.66\00:09:31.57 But God bless you. Thank you. 00:09:31.60\00:09:32.93 I hope to see you on Sabbath. I appreciate that. 00:09:32.97\00:09:34.40 Okay. 00:09:34.44\00:09:35.77 And, friends, don't go away because Dr. Gallant is up next. 00:09:35.80\00:09:40.08 Welcome back, friends. 00:09:43.35\00:09:45.08 Dr. Roger Gallant. 00:09:45.11\00:09:46.45 Good to see you, Ron. Pretty bad shape. 00:10:57.69\00:10:59.59 Yes, he was. 00:10:59.62\00:11:00.96 And as we just discussed during his interview, 00:11:00.99\00:11:06.26 he looked like he had transformed to some degree. 00:11:06.29\00:11:11.20 His depression, he said comes and goes, 00:11:11.23\00:11:15.50 but he also said his bipolar when he's in this state, 00:11:15.54\00:11:20.11 he doesn't have these medications. 00:11:20.14\00:11:22.58 Can you talk a little bit about that? 00:11:22.61\00:11:24.21 Yes. 00:11:24.25\00:11:25.58 You know, I feel my heart goes out to Robert. 00:11:25.61\00:11:28.48 He is in a tough situation, 00:11:28.52\00:11:31.72 and his depression and bipolar disorder 00:11:31.75\00:11:35.62 make it tough for him to do what he needs to do. 00:11:35.66\00:11:40.10 He was on medicine and then stopped it. 00:11:40.13\00:11:44.63 And while he was here, 00:11:44.67\00:11:46.43 he was up and down with his emotions a little bit. 00:11:46.47\00:11:48.84 I heard he ran out of medicine. 00:11:48.87\00:11:50.81 Well, he did, and he actually has an appointment 00:11:50.84\00:11:54.61 to see a psychiatrist. 00:11:54.64\00:11:57.78 Now that he's left the program, 00:11:57.81\00:11:59.31 he has an appointment to see a psychiatrist 00:11:59.35\00:12:01.05 in the next few days. 00:12:01.08\00:12:02.78 So I think it would be helpful for him to be on some medicine. 00:12:02.82\00:12:07.46 The other thing that was of interest 00:12:07.49\00:12:08.86 is he's had a history of blood clots in his lungs, 00:12:08.89\00:12:13.63 and had been on a blood thinning medicine 00:12:13.66\00:12:15.46 to prevent another blood clot 00:12:15.50\00:12:17.60 and he had stopped that as well. 00:12:17.63\00:12:19.90 Now fortunately, he had some of that here with him 00:12:19.93\00:12:22.40 and so I actually had him start back on that 00:12:22.44\00:12:25.87 because we don't want to see him 00:12:25.91\00:12:27.34 develop another blood clot in his lungs. 00:12:27.38\00:12:29.11 He has autoimmune type of disorder 00:12:29.14\00:12:34.08 that promotes blood clotting. 00:12:34.12\00:12:36.99 And so he really needs to be on that medicine 00:12:37.02\00:12:39.35 because his body is too good at making the blood clot 00:12:39.39\00:12:45.03 and we don't want to see that happen. 00:12:45.06\00:12:46.70 But, you know, what to see Robert 00:12:46.73\00:12:49.16 and see his emotions, 00:12:49.20\00:12:50.53 and to see how when he first came 00:12:50.57\00:12:53.50 and when he was leaving the program, 00:12:53.54\00:12:55.94 a lot transpired in those 18 days. 00:12:55.97\00:12:58.77 And so I praise the Lord that he was doing better 00:12:58.81\00:13:02.11 when he left. 00:13:02.14\00:13:03.48 Amen. 00:13:03.51\00:13:04.85 You know, very knowledgeable... 00:13:04.88\00:13:06.48 Oh, yes. With a Bible. 00:13:06.51\00:13:07.95 I mean, this guy and I sat together 00:13:07.98\00:13:10.05 and did a Bible study for a couple of hours. 00:13:10.09\00:13:12.05 Yeah, absolutely. 00:13:12.09\00:13:14.09 He's gonna come to the Grass Valley Church this Sabbath. 00:13:14.12\00:13:17.23 Nice. I invited him. 00:13:17.26\00:13:19.19 He said, "Yeah, that's much closer 00:13:19.23\00:13:20.80 than out here in Colfax." 00:13:20.83\00:13:22.96 Yes. 00:13:23.00\00:13:24.33 You know, I'd like to follow 00:13:24.37\00:13:25.73 something I'd like to do for him, 00:13:25.77\00:13:27.57 I don't know what it is. 00:13:27.60\00:13:29.60 Maybe, I'll just be a friend. 00:13:29.64\00:13:32.81 Absolutely. You know. 00:13:32.84\00:13:34.18 My heart goes out to him too. 00:13:34.21\00:13:35.54 I know exactly what you're feeling 00:13:35.58\00:13:38.18 because I just, I feel sorry for him. 00:13:38.21\00:13:41.42 He's had some rough breaks. 00:13:41.45\00:13:43.45 But you know what, by God's grace, 00:13:43.49\00:13:45.39 I see the things are slowly starting to change. 00:13:45.42\00:13:48.66 They could. 00:13:48.69\00:13:50.03 And so he has hope 00:13:50.06\00:13:51.39 and that's the most important thing. 00:13:51.43\00:13:52.76 That is. 00:13:52.79\00:13:54.13 We talked about that. He has hope. 00:13:54.16\00:13:55.50 And we had some good times talking and praying together 00:13:55.53\00:14:00.54 and just, you know, sharing about the Bible 00:14:00.57\00:14:03.14 and about what our beliefs are. 00:14:03.17\00:14:05.14 And so I really, I'm really praying 00:14:05.17\00:14:07.94 that God will continue to work in his life. 00:14:07.98\00:14:10.85 Yeah. 00:14:10.88\00:14:12.21 In fact, I might talk to him about coming back 00:14:12.25\00:14:15.32 after he's gotten his medication 00:14:15.35\00:14:17.72 and he feels a little more stable, 00:14:17.75\00:14:20.06 maybe we can get him back for another session 00:14:20.09\00:14:22.12 or he can attend to all the meetings 00:14:22.16\00:14:24.76 because I understand he missed a few, 00:14:24.79\00:14:28.60 maybe several I don't know. 00:14:28.63\00:14:30.10 Yeah. 00:14:30.13\00:14:31.50 But again, it's important 00:14:31.53\00:14:34.50 that people attend these meetings. 00:14:34.54\00:14:36.84 Absolutely. 00:14:36.87\00:14:38.27 It makes a difference. 00:14:38.31\00:14:39.64 It makes a huge difference. 00:14:39.67\00:14:41.08 It did for me and I know it does for others. 00:14:41.11\00:14:43.45 Yeah. So what is the prognosis? 00:14:43.48\00:14:47.95 I think his prognosis is good. 00:14:47.98\00:14:49.32 He had changes in his body habitus. 00:14:49.35\00:14:53.59 He lost weight, lost about two inches off his waist. 00:14:53.62\00:14:58.13 Wow! 00:14:58.16\00:14:59.49 He is able to walk more, he has more energy. 00:14:59.53\00:15:05.13 His sleep improved. 00:15:05.17\00:15:07.40 It didn't get totally normal, but it's getting better. 00:15:07.44\00:15:11.07 And so I really think that by God's grace, 00:15:11.11\00:15:13.68 he's going to do well overtime. 00:15:13.71\00:15:15.48 That's so good to hear. Thank you, friend. 00:15:57.02\00:15:58.95 You know, we want to talk about a man 00:15:58.99\00:16:04.86 that come to us for help. 00:16:04.89\00:16:08.56 Everyone that comes here including when I came here, 00:16:08.60\00:16:11.00 I came here for help. 00:16:11.03\00:16:13.94 Sometimes we can give them that help that they need. 00:16:13.97\00:16:17.94 Only God can change their heart. 00:16:17.97\00:16:20.71 Only God can change their mental attitude. 00:16:20.74\00:16:24.98 Only God can change their minds. 00:16:25.01\00:16:27.12 We can help with the physical for sure. 00:16:27.15\00:16:29.88 And I know you can help with the spiritual 00:16:29.92\00:16:33.25 by giving your sessions every morning and such. 00:16:33.29\00:16:37.69 But then there are those like Robert 00:16:37.73\00:16:41.36 that's gonna need counsel and further assistance 00:16:41.40\00:16:45.43 in certain areas of his life. 00:16:45.47\00:16:47.74 And as he admitted himself, it's a good thing he got here. 00:16:47.77\00:16:52.47 He's been given some tools 00:16:52.51\00:16:55.24 with which to use to move forward, 00:16:55.28\00:16:58.45 but there's more that he needs. 00:16:58.48\00:17:02.12 Can you speak to us about that? 00:17:02.15\00:17:03.82 Well, as you know from time to time 00:17:03.85\00:17:05.82 we have people like him that come here 00:17:05.85\00:17:08.49 that are desperate. 00:17:08.52\00:17:10.03 They've tried the medicine around, 00:17:10.06\00:17:11.96 they've tried doctor, they've tried everything, 00:17:11.99\00:17:14.16 and then they hear about NEWSTART. 00:17:14.20\00:17:16.97 People that have certain mental disorders, 00:17:17.00\00:17:19.40 you know, whether it's depression or bipolar, 00:17:19.43\00:17:22.20 every now and then we'll get them to come here. 00:17:22.24\00:17:24.41 And they come here 00:17:24.44\00:17:25.77 and they get involved in the health program, 00:17:25.81\00:17:28.58 they start having the health changes 00:17:28.61\00:17:30.11 that transform in that way, 00:17:30.15\00:17:31.71 you know, their diet, their exercise. 00:17:31.75\00:17:34.62 But about halfway through the program, 00:17:34.65\00:17:35.98 they realize they're still struggling. 00:17:36.02\00:17:38.25 And this is where we go 00:17:38.29\00:17:39.62 off the chart with these guys, off course 00:17:39.65\00:17:42.06 because that's where almost becomes 00:17:42.09\00:17:43.43 purely the spiritual help 00:17:43.46\00:17:45.03 because I recognize that while their body 00:17:45.06\00:17:47.63 will respond to the health. 00:17:47.66\00:17:49.76 They have to have the health. 00:17:49.80\00:17:51.70 It's sometimes the health portion of this thing, 00:17:51.73\00:17:54.24 the physical changes 00:17:54.27\00:17:55.60 is what keeps them barely above water, without it 00:17:55.64\00:17:58.57 if they were to completely indulge in bad lifestyle, 00:17:58.61\00:18:01.84 it would combine with their troubles they're having, 00:18:01.88\00:18:04.31 their mental troubles. 00:18:04.35\00:18:05.68 It would throw them over the edge. 00:18:05.71\00:18:07.05 And that's what we've discovered with Robert. 00:18:07.08\00:18:09.08 He knows that he needs 00:18:09.12\00:18:10.45 more than what this place is gonna be able to give him 00:18:10.49\00:18:13.19 in that regard, 00:18:13.22\00:18:14.56 but he also recognized that the health message 00:18:14.59\00:18:17.56 is going to give him that ability to stay above water 00:18:17.59\00:18:21.20 long enough to get the help you need 00:18:21.23\00:18:23.00 'cause it's long term health. 00:18:23.03\00:18:24.37 Amen. 00:18:24.40\00:18:25.73 And so with him, 00:18:25.77\00:18:27.10 I had to go strictly just spiritual with him, 00:18:27.14\00:18:29.00 really honed in on what God can do, 00:18:29.04\00:18:32.04 God can open doors that we can hear for you... 00:18:32.07\00:18:34.84 With just some needs that he has, 00:18:34.88\00:18:36.95 but the tools that I did give him was trusting God. 00:18:36.98\00:18:40.92 God can direct you to the right article you made him read, 00:18:40.95\00:18:43.45 the right medicine, the right doctor, 00:18:43.49\00:18:45.05 the right he's in control. 00:18:45.09\00:18:47.32 And so I gave him that hope. 00:18:47.36\00:18:49.16 That hope. Yeah. 00:18:49.19\00:18:50.53 That yes, I need the health 00:18:50.56\00:18:52.36 because it's keeping me above water, you know. 00:18:52.39\00:18:55.00 I don't need to compound the problems, 00:18:55.03\00:18:56.60 I don't need to put diabetes and heart disease 00:18:56.63\00:18:58.63 and all these other issues on top of the mental struggles 00:18:58.67\00:19:01.30 that I'm having. 00:19:01.34\00:19:02.67 So I got to get that right and we talked about that. 00:19:02.70\00:19:04.61 You got to get this right, 00:19:04.64\00:19:06.44 and then trusting God to help you find avenue 00:19:06.47\00:19:09.78 with the other issues 00:19:09.81\00:19:11.35 that has caused him so much of struggle. 00:19:11.38\00:19:14.12 I understand that you've just given a crippled man crutches. 00:19:14.15\00:19:19.45 He may still be crippled but at least he can walk. 00:19:19.49\00:19:22.62 Yeah. 00:19:22.66\00:19:23.99 And if he could walk out of here 00:19:24.03\00:19:26.33 with the knowledge that you've given him, 00:19:26.36\00:19:28.46 with the knowledge that he's received 00:19:28.50\00:19:31.93 from our doctors and our staff, 00:19:31.97\00:19:34.24 he has a fighting chance. 00:19:34.27\00:19:37.44 But if you come to a battle with a knife 00:19:37.47\00:19:40.81 and they're using machine guns, you're gonna lose. 00:19:40.84\00:19:44.21 No, but, no doubt about it. 00:19:44.25\00:19:45.71 But I think now he's been given the tools. 00:19:45.75\00:19:48.68 Right, and great analogy with the crutches. 00:19:48.72\00:19:52.05 We would love for people in 18 days 00:19:52.09\00:19:54.92 of some of these issues, these depression issues 00:19:54.96\00:19:57.06 to just leave here and go 00:19:57.09\00:19:58.93 but, even in the depression recovery program 00:19:58.96\00:20:00.93 they tell them, this is boot camp. 00:20:00.96\00:20:03.47 We're talking about months down the road 00:20:03.50\00:20:05.47 and with these kind of issues, 00:20:05.50\00:20:07.30 there are changes that do take place. 00:20:07.34\00:20:09.64 They're incremental, they're small 00:20:09.67\00:20:11.34 and the health will really begin to boost 00:20:11.37\00:20:14.04 what's going on aided by doctors, 00:20:14.08\00:20:15.94 depression, counseling things. 00:20:15.98\00:20:18.05 And there's a great analogy that you use, 00:20:18.08\00:20:19.65 we may not be able to heal your crippleness, 00:20:19.68\00:20:22.75 but we can give you some crutches 00:20:22.78\00:20:24.15 that keeps you on your feet. 00:20:24.19\00:20:25.69 And I'd think with Robert, 00:20:25.72\00:20:27.42 I think in the honesty of his heart, 00:20:27.46\00:20:28.79 he would understand it and know that. 00:20:28.82\00:20:30.53 And I kind of got that sense from him. 00:20:30.56\00:20:33.26 Yeah. 00:20:33.29\00:20:35.30 I'm glad that just came up, it wasn't really my thought, 00:20:35.33\00:20:37.47 it just happened here, you know, what I mean. 00:20:37.50\00:20:39.90 That is true. That's right. 00:20:39.93\00:20:41.84 You know, I want to thank you again. 00:20:41.87\00:20:44.57 You're always so pleasant to talk to 00:20:44.61\00:20:47.38 and willing to come in and help all these guests 00:20:47.41\00:20:50.85 and help in our program, 00:20:50.88\00:20:52.21 and I appreciate that. 00:20:52.25\00:20:53.85 And, friends, I want to thank you, 00:20:53.88\00:20:55.22 but don't go away Dr. Nedley is up next. 00:20:55.25\00:20:58.69 Welcome to NEWSTART Now. 00:21:01.72\00:21:03.26 I'm Dr. Neil Nedley. 00:21:03.29\00:21:04.63 Glad to have you with us today. 00:21:04.66\00:21:06.23 And with me today is Dr. Eddie Ramirez, 00:21:06.26\00:21:08.70 researcher, physician, 00:21:08.73\00:21:10.60 and also professor at Weimar College 00:21:10.63\00:21:13.47 that teaches our research design methods. 00:21:13.50\00:21:16.37 In fact, I was with Dr. Ramirez not long ago, 00:21:16.40\00:21:21.08 where as some Harvard professors were gathered 00:21:21.11\00:21:23.24 and they said, Dr. Ramirez, you're putting 00:21:23.28\00:21:26.08 more research on the market 00:21:26.11\00:21:27.82 than we are doing at Harvard. 00:21:27.85\00:21:31.15 And they were wondering 00:21:31.19\00:21:32.52 why Dr. Ramirez wasn't joining them at Harvard. 00:21:32.55\00:21:34.82 Well, he's here at Weimar Institute for a good reason. 00:21:34.86\00:21:37.33 But today, we're going to be talking about something 00:21:37.36\00:21:39.73 that is truly exciting, 00:21:39.76\00:21:41.26 this got national news this particular study 00:21:41.30\00:21:45.47 because of the issue that we have 00:21:45.50\00:21:48.07 in our country of benzodiazepines. 00:21:48.10\00:21:51.37 Benzodiazepines are valium, ativan, 00:21:51.41\00:21:55.44 lorazepam, alprazolam, 00:21:55.48\00:21:58.41 xanax, there's all sorts of different versions, 00:21:58.45\00:22:01.25 restoral is a sleeping medicine, temazepam. 00:22:01.28\00:22:05.55 And these drugs you will probably get 00:22:05.59\00:22:08.22 if you go to the emergency room with a lot of anxiety. 00:22:08.26\00:22:11.96 They're gonna shoot you up with benzos, 00:22:11.99\00:22:13.86 and you're gonna feel more like you're at peace with the world. 00:22:13.90\00:22:17.37 But the problem is, you are now entering 00:22:17.40\00:22:20.30 into the one of the most highly addictive drugs on the planet. 00:22:20.34\00:22:24.47 And if you continue to take this drug for 30 days, 00:22:24.51\00:22:27.48 you are hooked, 00:22:27.51\00:22:28.84 meaning that your anxiety levels are now going back up 00:22:28.88\00:22:31.88 to almost where they were before, 00:22:31.91\00:22:34.08 but now if you try to get off of it, 00:22:34.12\00:22:35.68 you're gonna even feel a whole lot worse. 00:22:35.72\00:22:38.62 These drugs suppress the frontal lobe of the brain, 00:22:38.65\00:22:41.52 and when the frontal lobe goes down, 00:22:41.56\00:22:43.12 mental illness goes up. 00:22:43.16\00:22:44.93 And so it's a short-term gain, long-term problem, 00:22:44.96\00:22:49.33 but yet doctors like to prescribe it 00:22:49.36\00:22:51.23 because they're popular for the first few days, 00:22:51.27\00:22:54.24 in first few weeks 00:22:54.27\00:22:55.60 that these drugs are utilized, 00:22:55.64\00:22:57.41 but many doctors don't know 00:22:57.44\00:22:58.77 how to take people off of these drugs. 00:22:58.81\00:23:00.74 In fact, it's very difficult to get 00:23:00.78\00:23:02.71 people off of these drugs. 00:23:02.74\00:23:04.68 We have shown that in our study, 00:23:04.71\00:23:06.92 in our residential program 00:23:06.95\00:23:09.02 that if people don't get off these drugs, 00:23:09.05\00:23:11.52 the residential program isn't gonna work 00:23:11.55\00:23:13.46 near as well for them. 00:23:13.49\00:23:15.02 They'll have a 97-98% chance of getting dramatically better 00:23:15.06\00:23:20.16 if they're not on them, 00:23:20.20\00:23:21.60 but if they're on them, 00:23:21.63\00:23:22.96 their chance goes down significantly. 00:23:23.00\00:23:25.03 And so this study was published 00:23:25.07\00:23:27.70 in the American Journal on addictions. 00:23:27.74\00:23:31.21 And it was presented at the meeting of... 00:23:31.24\00:23:35.54 Remind me, Dr. Ramirez, which meeting was it? 00:23:35.58\00:23:37.75 The addiction meeting in Miami, Florida. 00:23:37.78\00:23:41.68 So there was an addiction meeting, 00:23:41.72\00:23:44.19 it actually is addiction psychiatry 00:23:44.22\00:23:46.15 this I think is what it was. 00:23:46.19\00:23:48.16 And you presented this in Miami, 00:23:48.19\00:23:50.66 and Medscape picked it up and centered around the world. 00:23:50.69\00:23:53.83 It happened to be around Christmas 00:23:53.86\00:23:56.03 and so, it maybe didn't get as much attention 00:23:56.06\00:23:58.70 if it hadn't been for the holidays. 00:23:58.73\00:24:00.94 But tell us a little bit about this data 00:24:00.97\00:24:04.31 and what happened to these patients 00:24:04.34\00:24:06.17 to be able to get off their benzo safely without issues? 00:24:06.21\00:24:09.41 That's right. 00:24:09.44\00:24:10.78 This is the community version of the program 00:24:10.81\00:24:13.48 in which we're actually not their physicians, 00:24:13.52\00:24:16.02 but rather they continue to see their main physician 00:24:16.05\00:24:19.75 as they're going through their lifestyle changes 00:24:19.79\00:24:21.86 that we are proposing during the eight weeks. 00:24:21.89\00:24:24.66 And what we were finding out is that those patients 00:24:24.69\00:24:28.33 that were using those benzodiazepines 00:24:28.36\00:24:31.20 that you were just mentioning a minute ago, 00:24:31.23\00:24:33.77 those people, as they came to the program 00:24:33.80\00:24:36.67 we do a whole program about addictions. 00:24:36.71\00:24:40.74 And many of them get convicted, 00:24:40.78\00:24:42.74 that this may not be the best solution 00:24:42.78\00:24:45.88 for their mental health problems 00:24:45.91\00:24:47.65 and they go back to their head physician, 00:24:47.68\00:24:50.35 and ask them to help them decrease those benzodiazepines. 00:24:50.39\00:24:54.22 And we found out 00:24:54.26\00:24:55.59 that the vast majority of the people 00:24:55.62\00:24:57.99 participating of the eight week program. 00:24:58.03\00:25:00.43 By the end of the program, 00:25:00.46\00:25:02.26 only very few were continuing to use this benzodiazepines 00:25:02.30\00:25:06.94 something that the CDC had declare a national emergency 00:25:06.97\00:25:11.54 because so many people here in America 00:25:11.57\00:25:14.91 are using these medications 00:25:14.94\00:25:16.31 and they cannot get off them. 00:25:16.34\00:25:17.68 Wow! 00:25:17.71\00:25:19.05 And so just by going 00:25:19.08\00:25:20.45 to a mental health education program, 00:25:20.48\00:25:23.45 learning how the brain works 00:25:23.49\00:25:25.25 and applying that information in their life, 00:25:25.29\00:25:28.22 they were able to get off these drugs. 00:25:28.26\00:25:30.59 But did their anxiety go up? 00:25:30.63\00:25:32.63 And their anxiety actually came down 00:25:32.66\00:25:35.26 as a result of eliminating these things from their mind. 00:25:35.30\00:25:39.47 Okay. 00:25:39.50\00:25:40.84 So by getting on the lifestyle changes, 00:25:40.87\00:25:43.57 not only were they able to get off their benzos, 00:25:43.61\00:25:46.44 but their anxiety levels went down. 00:25:46.47\00:25:48.94 As we teach them how to handle their thoughts much better 00:25:48.98\00:25:52.85 as to process them and for them to understand 00:25:52.88\00:25:56.38 that they can actually have control of their thoughts, 00:25:56.42\00:25:58.65 and not their thoughts over them 00:25:58.69\00:26:00.56 and in that way their emotions change, 00:26:00.59\00:26:03.06 and in that way their overall mental health 00:26:03.09\00:26:05.69 improves dramatically 00:26:05.73\00:26:07.20 compared to those not doing those changes. 00:26:07.23\00:26:09.90 We are in a national crisis today. 00:26:09.93\00:26:12.10 Far too many people are using these benzos, 00:26:12.13\00:26:15.10 and they're actually inhibiting their mental health. 00:26:15.14\00:26:18.31 They think it's helping them and they don't know 00:26:18.34\00:26:20.08 how they're gonna be able to get around without them, 00:26:20.11\00:26:23.31 but there is a way out 00:26:23.35\00:26:24.85 and it's now been well documented 00:26:24.88\00:26:27.05 in the medical literature 00:26:27.08\00:26:28.95 in that way out is what, Dr. Ramirez? 00:26:28.98\00:26:32.45 The depression and anxiety recovery program 00:26:32.49\00:26:37.29 in which we give you the tools for you to decide 00:26:37.33\00:26:41.56 and to make those changes 00:26:41.60\00:26:43.23 and to improve not only mental health, 00:26:43.26\00:26:45.37 but overall health as a result of that. 00:26:45.40\00:26:47.57 The program is in many languages. 00:26:47.60\00:26:49.40 It's in English and Dr. Ramirez has actually 00:26:49.44\00:26:51.81 presented it in Spanish as well. 00:26:51.84\00:26:54.11 You can get the home based version 00:26:54.14\00:26:55.81 or you can do it at your own pace at home. 00:26:55.84\00:26:58.88 You can get the community based version 00:26:58.91\00:27:00.88 where you can actually go to a site 00:27:00.92\00:27:03.59 for their health coaches 00:27:03.62\00:27:05.69 that can help you once a week for eight weeks. 00:27:05.72\00:27:08.76 Or you can actually come to Weimar Institute 00:27:08.79\00:27:12.23 and enroll into residential 00:27:12.26\00:27:14.26 depression and anxiety recovery program. 00:27:14.30\00:27:17.43 And actually we're gonna be presenting some data 00:27:17.47\00:27:20.04 on this very topic in the residential program. 00:27:20.07\00:27:22.90 These are the most severe cases on very high doses of benzos 00:27:22.94\00:27:27.48 and we're gonna find some exciting information on that 00:27:27.51\00:27:30.21 in the future as well. 00:27:30.25\00:27:31.91 So there is hope, 00:27:31.95\00:27:33.45 there is hope for those people taking these benzodiazepines, 00:27:33.48\00:27:37.75 but it's not only to decrease them 00:27:37.79\00:27:39.69 but you need to implement those lifestyle principles 00:27:39.72\00:27:42.96 that are gonna give you that permanent victory. 00:27:42.99\00:27:46.06 And we would recommend you reduce it 00:27:46.09\00:27:48.60 in conjunction with your physician 00:27:48.63\00:27:51.40 so that it's not dangerous 00:27:51.43\00:27:53.94 because if you get off these benzos very quickly, 00:27:53.97\00:27:56.10 it can be dangerous without a physician's guidance 00:27:56.14\00:27:58.94 and of course without this program. 00:27:58.97\00:28:01.74 This is NEWSTART Now. 00:28:01.78\00:28:03.11 I'm Dr. Neil Nedley, 00:28:03.14\00:28:04.48 and join us again next week for another exciting study. 00:28:04.51\00:28:07.32
