Hey you. 00:12:35.28\00:12:36.95 You know, I want to talk about this young man. 00:12:36.99\00:12:40.09 This is unusual because he is a young man. 00:12:40.12\00:12:42.96 Yeah, Richie? Richie. 00:12:42.99\00:12:44.33 Yeah. 00:12:44.36\00:12:45.69 And, you know, oftentimes, 00:12:45.73\00:12:47.80 you see a lot of older people come into the program 00:12:47.83\00:12:50.33 that are sick and dying and then, 00:12:50.37\00:12:52.40 but here's a case where a guy comes here, 00:12:52.43\00:12:55.40 he wants to get back on track, he wants to lose some weight. 00:12:55.44\00:12:59.27 And of all things, 00:12:59.31\00:13:00.74 he wants to get his back to feeling better. 00:13:00.78\00:13:04.85 And this isn't a place necessarily that I would say, 00:13:04.88\00:13:08.35 "Well, yeah, go to the NEWSTART program, 00:13:08.38\00:13:10.99 your back will feel better." 00:13:11.02\00:13:12.92 I wouldn't do that, 00:13:12.95\00:13:14.39 you know, but yet he came here in good faith from Australia 00:13:14.42\00:13:21.10 where he did colporteuring and Bible studying 00:13:21.13\00:13:23.73 and all kinds of things. 00:13:23.77\00:13:25.43 And, you know, it's good that we can hear from you, 00:13:25.47\00:13:30.47 from a doctor's perspective, 00:13:30.51\00:13:33.01 what happened to this young man? 00:13:33.04\00:13:34.71 What happened to Richie? 00:13:34.74\00:13:36.08 Well, first of all, backing up in case, he wasn't... 00:13:36.11\00:13:38.85 I don't know how specific he was 00:13:38.88\00:13:40.22 when he did his interview about what happened, 00:13:40.25\00:13:41.62 but he was an active person. 00:13:41.65\00:13:42.98 Yes. 00:13:43.02\00:13:44.35 You know, backpacking with pathfinders, 00:13:44.39\00:13:45.75 and mountain biking, and doing a lot of things. 00:13:45.79\00:13:51.99 And he had a very unfortunate accident in October 00:13:52.03\00:13:54.96 and was really laid up 00:13:55.00\00:13:57.53 and was given a lot of medication. 00:13:57.57\00:14:00.20 Fortunately, no major permanent visible damage to bones 00:14:00.24\00:14:04.94 like breaks or anything like that, but... 00:14:04.97\00:14:06.91 But he put on 100 pounds! Yeah, he wasn't doing well. 00:14:06.94\00:14:10.28 He was on these medications 00:14:10.31\00:14:11.81 that would give him a lot of side effects, 00:14:11.85\00:14:13.55 you know, basically they were knocking him out. 00:14:13.58\00:14:15.22 It sounded like to me that 00:14:15.25\00:14:16.58 he was just in bed all the time, 00:14:16.62\00:14:20.26 just would be hungry all the time, 00:14:20.29\00:14:22.99 so he would just wake up, eat, go back to bed. 00:14:23.02\00:14:25.43 Somewhere along the way there, 00:14:25.46\00:14:26.80 he put on tremendous amounts of weight, 00:14:26.83\00:14:28.86 he said about 100 pounds. 00:14:28.90\00:14:30.83 Right, that's what he shared. 00:14:30.87\00:14:32.20 Yeah, which would affect anybody, 00:14:32.23\00:14:33.57 of course, you know, you wouldn't think 00:14:33.60\00:14:36.40 most young, active, healthy people in their, 00:14:36.44\00:14:39.51 you know, early 30s have an accident like that, 00:14:39.54\00:14:41.91 they bounce right back. 00:14:41.94\00:14:43.61 You know, he didn't. 00:14:43.65\00:14:44.98 He didn't which is unusual in itself, 00:14:45.01\00:14:47.45 what do you say? 00:14:47.48\00:14:48.82 Kind of unusual in itself, yeah. 00:14:48.85\00:14:50.19 And so he came to us and... 00:14:50.22\00:14:53.59 So he came and unable to hike and walk 00:14:53.62\00:14:57.49 and he's really wanting to be able to hike again 00:14:57.53\00:14:59.39 and get out and walk. 00:14:59.43\00:15:00.96 And he was just really struggling 00:15:01.00\00:15:02.63 with basically getting around 00:15:02.66\00:15:05.03 and doing just activities of daily living even. 00:15:05.07\00:15:07.40 Well, after two weeks here, what happened? 00:15:07.44\00:15:09.37 It wasn't even two weeks. Wasn't? 00:15:09.40\00:15:11.07 No, you know, we assessed him, prayed about his, 00:15:11.11\00:15:16.28 you know, problem, his condition, 00:15:16.31\00:15:18.08 and started hydrotherapy and massage 00:15:18.11\00:15:20.42 which is part of the NEWSTART program 00:15:20.45\00:15:21.88 in addition to your more traditional nutrition 00:15:21.92\00:15:24.29 exercise, water, and all those things. 00:15:24.32\00:15:25.65 Yes, yes. 00:15:25.69\00:15:27.02 And, wow, within a week, 00:15:27.06\00:15:29.62 he was feeling so much better 00:15:29.66\00:15:31.96 that he decided to go out on like a six-mile hike. 00:15:31.99\00:15:35.46 And yeah, so next day he was hobbling around, 00:15:35.50\00:15:38.33 "What's the matter? 00:15:38.37\00:15:39.70 Is it your back, you know, giving you trouble again?" 00:15:39.73\00:15:41.07 "No, the back's fine, I just worked out so much, 00:15:41.10\00:15:42.67 my legs are hurting today." 00:15:42.70\00:15:44.31 So you he had to work for all the muscle soreness. 00:15:44.34\00:15:46.01 Yeah, that happened to me by the way. 00:15:46.04\00:15:48.84 I had to go see the doc, 00:15:48.88\00:15:50.21 I said, Michael Orlich was my doctor at the time. 00:15:50.25\00:15:53.85 He said, "Well, let me show you what to do with your legs." 00:15:53.88\00:15:56.32 And I had to stretch 'cause I was so sore, 00:15:56.35\00:15:59.72 and that's what happened with Richie. 00:15:59.75\00:16:01.32 Yeah, eell, but of course, the massage really helped that 00:16:01.36\00:16:03.96 to recover it quickly. 00:16:03.99\00:16:05.33 Absolutely, absolutely. 00:16:05.36\00:16:06.70 So, you know, he did really, really well. 00:16:06.73\00:16:09.56 And he was very happy, 00:16:09.60\00:16:11.40 of course, that he could hike and do those things again. 00:16:11.43\00:16:14.04 He tells me he loves the food. 00:16:14.07\00:16:16.27 You know, which is interesting. 00:16:16.30\00:16:17.64 Yeah, he better love it 00:16:17.67\00:16:19.74 'cause that's part of its change. 00:16:19.77\00:16:21.94 Yeah, most people, they really say 00:16:21.98\00:16:23.91 that it is interesting 'cause when you're older 00:16:23.95\00:16:25.85 and you've got these really serious medical conditions, 00:16:25.88\00:16:28.48 sometimes you're really motivated 00:16:28.52\00:16:29.98 to change a diet and stick with it. 00:16:30.02\00:16:32.09 Yeah. 00:16:32.12\00:16:33.46 You know, he is young. 00:16:33.49\00:16:34.82 A lot of young people say I'll try it for a little while, 00:16:34.86\00:16:36.73 but yet, he loved it. 00:16:36.76\00:16:38.09 He loved it. Plans to stick with it. 00:16:38.13\00:16:39.89 Yeah, well, 12 years ago, 00:16:39.93\00:16:42.16 I was one of those older people who came through here 00:16:42.20\00:16:45.33 and I love the food, I'm still on it, 00:16:45.37\00:16:48.20 I'm still doing well, I lost 100 pounds. 00:16:48.24\00:16:50.64 I guess one thing wrong with that statement 00:16:50.67\00:16:52.01 you said, "Old?" 00:16:52.04\00:16:53.38 Older, you're not older. 00:16:53.41\00:16:54.74 Oh, I'm not older. 00:16:54.78\00:16:56.95 I asked this lady I met once, sweet older lady, 00:16:56.98\00:17:01.38 and I was in my 50s at the time, 00:17:01.42\00:17:03.62 I asked, "Where do you get the energy, 00:17:03.65\00:17:04.99 how come you act so young?" 00:17:05.02\00:17:06.82 She says, "Well, two things I learned, young man." 00:17:06.86\00:17:09.16 And I said, "What's that?" 00:17:09.19\00:17:10.53 She says, "I don't have any mirrors in the house, 00:17:10.56\00:17:13.96 that way, I can't see how old I'm getting." 00:17:14.00\00:17:18.70 I don't know if that's going to help 00:17:18.73\00:17:20.07 anybody out there but... 00:17:20.10\00:17:21.44 No, but, you know, the diet does make a difference 00:17:21.47\00:17:22.80 on how people feel. 00:17:22.84\00:17:24.17 Oh, absolutely. 00:17:24.21\00:17:25.54 And so even a young person 00:17:25.57\00:17:26.91 like Richie could feel the difference 00:17:26.94\00:17:28.64 and very motivated to stick with the diet, 00:17:28.68\00:17:33.11 and it is actually an anti-inflammatory diet. 00:17:33.15\00:17:35.58 Yes. 00:17:35.62\00:17:36.95 You know, people that have some various forms of orthopedic 00:17:36.99\00:17:41.89 or I would say rheumatologic problems 00:17:41.92\00:17:44.26 are sometimes put on a plant-based diet 00:17:44.29\00:17:46.63 to really help that. 00:17:46.66\00:17:48.43 Helps that inflammation. 00:17:48.46\00:17:49.80 The inflammations at their joints move and work better, 00:17:49.83\00:17:52.23 and we see that all the time 00:17:52.27\00:17:54.34 with people who come for other things 00:17:54.37\00:17:55.74 and then, you know, their back gets better, 00:17:55.77\00:17:58.34 their knee gets better while they're here 00:17:58.37\00:17:59.71 when they are working on their diabetes, 00:17:59.74\00:18:01.08 so their heart. 00:18:01.11\00:18:02.44 And it's amazing how much when you feel a lot better, 00:18:02.48\00:18:04.25 you're more active, and the more active you are, 00:18:04.28\00:18:05.65 the more you do 00:18:05.68\00:18:07.02 and the better you feel even on top of that. 00:18:07.05\00:18:08.38 It reminds me of a story of a gentleman 00:18:08.42\00:18:10.02 I interviewed a couple of years back. 00:18:10.05\00:18:13.32 He'd been all over the country. 00:18:13.36\00:18:15.26 Nobody could figure out what was wrong with him. 00:18:15.29\00:18:18.93 Someone suggested he come 00:18:18.96\00:18:20.30 to the NEWSTART program, which he did. 00:18:20.33\00:18:23.90 Our doctors didn't know what was wrong with him either, 00:18:23.93\00:18:26.33 but he got well. 00:18:26.37\00:18:27.70 He got better. He got better. He was... 00:18:27.74\00:18:29.20 'Cause God knew what was wrong. 00:18:29.24\00:18:30.61 God knows, you bet. 00:18:30.64\00:18:33.71 So there's a lot going on here than just, 00:18:33.74\00:18:37.88 you know, going to eat something 00:18:37.91\00:18:39.35 and doing a little exercise, get the massage, 00:18:39.38\00:18:41.52 and hydro and such, 00:18:41.55\00:18:43.25 so I'm glad you brought that up. 00:18:43.28\00:18:45.39 Yeah. You know, and Richie is a good... 00:18:45.42\00:18:46.89 It brings up a really important thing too is that people, 00:18:46.92\00:18:50.16 especially in this day and age, 00:18:50.19\00:18:51.83 we're seeing a lot more of people 00:18:51.86\00:18:53.36 gaining weight at a younger age. 00:18:53.40\00:18:55.43 That's really going to affect them for the future. 00:18:55.46\00:18:57.63 And so many times it just added 00:18:57.67\00:18:59.00 to the NEWSTART's for older people with illnesses. 00:18:59.03\00:19:01.80 NEWSTART's for people who have gained weight 00:19:01.84\00:19:03.57 and are having trouble losing it 00:19:03.61\00:19:04.94 and they're young and need to change 00:19:04.97\00:19:06.47 before they get all those problems 00:19:06.51\00:19:08.64 like diabetes or heart diseases. 00:19:08.68\00:19:10.01 Amen. Yeah. 00:19:10.05\00:19:11.71 Well, doctor, time's runs out. 00:19:11.75\00:19:13.21 I want to thank you... Good to see you too. 00:19:17.52\00:19:18.85 And friends, thank you. 00:19:18.89\00:19:20.22 But don't go away 00:19:20.26\00:19:21.59 Dr. Eddie Ramirez 00:19:21.62\00:19:23.22 and Dr. Neil Nedley are up next. 00:19:23.26\00:19:27.26 When we look at the health status of Americans today, 00:19:27.30\00:19:30.03 it's alarming to see that 60% 00:19:30.07\00:19:32.27 are either overweight or obese. 00:19:32.30\00:19:34.47 In addition, diseases such as type 2 diabetes, cancer, 00:19:39.77\00:19:43.35 and heart disorders are the leading cause 00:19:43.38\00:19:45.28 of so many complications and deaths every year. 00:19:45.31\00:19:48.32 Could it have something to do with what we eat? 00:19:52.79\00:19:55.39 After all, every one in four Americans 00:19:55.42\00:19:57.99 visits a fast food restaurant daily, 00:19:58.03\00:20:00.20 and with such easy access to quick-fix foods, 00:20:00.23\00:20:03.77 we tend to forget the poor health value 00:20:03.80\00:20:05.70 those foods actually offer. 00:20:05.73\00:20:08.80 Maybe it's the sedentary lifestyle 00:20:08.84\00:20:10.51 and lack of exercise that we've become 00:20:10.54\00:20:12.44 so accustomed to as a media-dependant world. 00:20:12.47\00:20:16.11 Whatever the cause of these diseases, 00:20:16.14\00:20:17.85 a solution has arrived. 00:20:17.88\00:20:22.22 The NEWSTART lifestyle center offers an enriching program 00:20:22.25\00:20:25.42 where patients can get a healing 00:20:25.45\00:20:27.19 of mind, body, and soul, 00:20:27.22\00:20:29.46 located in the outskirts of Sacramento, 00:20:29.49\00:20:31.83 the NEWSTART center is situated 00:20:31.86\00:20:33.73 on the beautiful campus 00:20:33.76\00:20:35.10 of Weimar Centre of Health and Education 00:20:35.13\00:20:37.90 with scenic walking and hiking trails all around. 00:20:37.93\00:20:41.67 With a "whole plant foods eating whole" motto, 00:20:41.70\00:20:44.97 the NEWSTART center promotes a healthy plant-based diet 00:20:45.01\00:20:48.01 with an emphasis on natural foods. 00:20:48.04\00:20:50.68 The NEWSTART staff are made up 00:20:50.71\00:20:52.35 of California Board Certified nurses, doctors, dietitians, 00:20:52.38\00:20:57.29 and therapists who work together 00:20:57.32\00:20:58.92 to assist each patient personally. 00:20:58.95\00:21:01.56 The staff are dedicated 00:21:01.59\00:21:02.92 to each patient's success in the program 00:21:02.96\00:21:04.86 and are always there to guide, advise, and encourage. 00:21:04.89\00:21:09.00 In addition to a healthy lifestyle, 00:21:09.03\00:21:11.13 NEWSTART also promotes a healthy exercise routine. 00:21:11.17\00:21:14.07 You're both in sequence, that's good, all right. 00:21:14.10\00:21:16.97 As part of the balance program, 00:21:17.01\00:21:18.64 there's much opportunity to get 00:21:18.67\00:21:20.38 in the fair share of physical activity 00:21:20.41\00:21:22.54 from utilizing our fitness center 00:21:22.58\00:21:24.81 to taking a stroll around the peaceful grounds of Weimar. 00:21:24.85\00:21:28.52 It's amazing what a new start can do for you. 00:21:28.55\00:21:33.02 Welcome to NEWSTART Now. 00:21:33.05\00:21:34.39 I'm Dr. Neil Nedley, President of Weimar Institute. 00:21:34.42\00:21:37.59 And with me today is Dr. Eddie Ramirez, 00:21:37.63\00:21:41.00 one of our physicians and researchers 00:21:41.03\00:21:43.40 who is well published in the scientific literature 00:21:43.43\00:21:45.97 and really travels all over the world 00:21:46.00\00:21:48.90 presenting studies about Weimar and NEWSTART 00:21:48.94\00:21:51.84 anywhere from Harvard to China to many places 00:21:51.87\00:21:57.01 where there are scientists gathered together 00:21:57.05\00:22:00.02 for him to present the exciting things 00:22:00.05\00:22:02.68 that are happening here at NEWSTART. 00:22:02.72\00:22:05.15 Today, we're going to be talking about 00:22:05.19\00:22:07.12 the silent killer. 00:22:07.16\00:22:09.29 Dr. Ramirez, what is the silent killer? 00:22:09.32\00:22:11.33 Silent killer is called high blood pressure. 00:22:11.36\00:22:14.70 Many people have issues with high blood pressure 00:22:14.73\00:22:18.70 and they don't even realize it, 00:22:18.73\00:22:20.30 and this has very negative effects on the body. 00:22:20.34\00:22:24.57 The internal organs cannot withstand 00:22:24.61\00:22:27.01 that excess blood pressure 00:22:27.04\00:22:29.48 and the person many times end up with severe problems 00:22:29.51\00:22:32.58 like heart failure as a result of that long-term 00:22:32.61\00:22:36.28 high blood pressure for a long period of time. 00:22:36.32\00:22:38.85 Yes, and of course, it also increases 00:22:38.89\00:22:41.06 the risk of stroke dramatically 00:22:41.09\00:22:43.53 both hemorrhagic stroke and bleeding stroke. 00:22:43.56\00:22:46.43 And let me say, although high blood pressure 00:22:46.46\00:22:49.73 can affect your kidneys and all sorts of things, 00:22:49.76\00:22:51.87 and what the worst thing it can do is affect your brain 00:22:51.90\00:22:55.00 because that's who we are. 00:22:55.04\00:22:56.57 And so this is why it's very important, 00:22:56.60\00:22:58.51 even if you don't have a stroke, 00:22:58.54\00:23:00.54 if your blood pressure stays elevated, 00:23:00.58\00:23:02.31 you're going to start losing your memory a lot quicker. 00:23:02.34\00:23:04.88 Age related cognitive decline, 00:23:04.91\00:23:07.08 half of the patients that are on dialysis 00:23:07.12\00:23:09.42 in a dialysis center are there 00:23:09.45\00:23:11.12 because their blood pressure was not controlled earlier. 00:23:11.15\00:23:14.56 So find out what your blood pressure is, 00:23:14.59\00:23:17.03 if it's about 115/80, 00:23:17.06\00:23:20.93 you are candidate to coming to NEWSTART 00:23:20.96\00:23:23.87 just for blood pressure alone. 00:23:23.90\00:23:25.83 How many patients were studied in this particular study 00:23:25.87\00:23:29.07 that was published in the journal 00:23:29.10\00:23:30.44 Atherosclerosis, Thrombosis, and Vascular Biology? 00:23:30.47\00:23:35.81 One thousand one hundred and ninety six. 00:23:35.84\00:23:38.95 Okay, so this is no small group. 00:23:38.98\00:23:41.22 And that's why it's being accepted for publication 00:23:41.25\00:23:43.92 because this program works for blood pressure. 00:23:43.95\00:23:47.16 And what did we find out 00:23:47.19\00:23:48.59 in these well over 1,000 patients 00:23:48.62\00:23:50.89 who were on the verge of silently killing themselves 00:23:50.93\00:23:54.06 before they came here? 00:23:54.10\00:23:55.43 Well, on average, what we would like 00:23:55.46\00:23:57.27 for you to have is a blood pressure, 00:23:57.30\00:24:00.00 a systolic number of 115 or under that. 00:24:00.04\00:24:03.64 On average, these patients had 132, 00:24:03.67\00:24:07.08 way too high. 00:24:07.11\00:24:08.94 And we took the blood pressure 00:24:08.98\00:24:11.21 many times throughout the program 00:24:11.25\00:24:12.95 so we could monitor, 00:24:12.98\00:24:14.32 we need to watch out many times, 00:24:14.35\00:24:16.69 we actually decrease or eliminate your medication 00:24:16.72\00:24:19.59 as you come to the program 00:24:19.62\00:24:21.46 because if we keep it 00:24:21.49\00:24:22.82 with the same amount of medication, 00:24:22.86\00:24:24.19 you may go way too low 00:24:24.23\00:24:25.56 and you actually can pass out 00:24:25.59\00:24:26.93 or have some nasty side effects. 00:24:26.96\00:24:29.80 So look at the progression, at time one, 00:24:29.83\00:24:32.87 at the end of the first week, 00:24:32.90\00:24:35.40 they had an average growth pressure of 125, 00:24:35.44\00:24:38.74 very good number. 00:24:38.77\00:24:40.11 Okay, so that's gone down about 13, well, about 7. 00:24:40.14\00:24:43.65 It was 132? 132. 00:24:43.68\00:24:45.18 Okay, so they've gone down seven points in a week. 00:24:45.21\00:24:47.48 Then time two, 121. 00:24:47.52\00:24:50.22 Okay, another four points. 00:24:50.25\00:24:52.12 And by the end, 121 again, 00:24:52.15\00:24:56.06 so that was a very good improvement in just 18 days. 00:24:56.09\00:25:01.36 See, the blood pressure medication that many times 00:25:01.40\00:25:04.60 you're taking doesn't lower your blood pressure 00:25:04.63\00:25:07.90 by many points, 00:25:07.94\00:25:09.27 you know, this is much more efficient than that. 00:25:09.30\00:25:11.97 A lot of times these antihypertensives 00:25:12.01\00:25:14.28 that can be pretty costly, 00:25:14.31\00:25:15.64 they're going to lower about five or six points. 00:25:15.68\00:25:17.21 That's right. 00:25:17.25\00:25:18.58 And if they lower it 4, they think that's great. 00:25:18.61\00:25:21.25 And so this is a program that lowers it by well over 10 00:25:21.28\00:25:26.82 and it will continue to come down gradually after that. 00:25:26.86\00:25:31.39 And so, in fact as we do follow up programs, 00:25:31.43\00:25:34.50 we realize this is a diet 00:25:34.53\00:25:36.87 and a lifestyle that you can be on for life. 00:25:36.90\00:25:39.70 And so your chance... 00:25:39.73\00:25:41.90 What is the chance of being able to be medication-free 00:25:41.94\00:25:45.97 and have your blood pressure controlled 00:25:46.01\00:25:48.44 if you have high blood pressure, 00:25:48.48\00:25:49.81 do we have that? 00:25:49.84\00:25:51.18 I don't have that number in particular here. 00:25:51.21\00:25:54.98 But we do know that most of the people 00:25:55.02\00:25:57.75 that keep on the program, 00:25:57.79\00:26:00.02 they need to continue working with their physician 00:26:00.06\00:26:02.59 because very soon 00:26:02.62\00:26:04.06 either they will decrease your medication 00:26:04.09\00:26:05.89 or you will no longer will have a need for medication. 00:26:05.93\00:26:10.60 Also, another number 00:26:10.63\00:26:11.97 that we were measuring was diastolic, 00:26:12.00\00:26:14.17 you know, the other number. 00:26:14.20\00:26:16.54 On average, they started with a diastolic of 76, 00:26:16.57\00:26:20.94 it came down, first week, to 72, 00:26:20.98\00:26:24.48 to the second week to 70, 00:26:24.51\00:26:26.31 and by the end of the program to 69. 00:26:26.35\00:26:29.75 Weimar continues to save lives, sometimes just by 00:26:29.78\00:26:33.46 controlling blood pressure through lifestyle. 00:26:33.49\00:26:36.89 Thank you for watching NEWSTART Now. 00:26:36.93\00:26:38.99 I am Dr. Neil Nedley and join us again next week 00:26:39.03\00:26:41.60 for another new exciting study. 00:26:41.63\00:26:43.63 Well, friends, that's it for today. 00:26:46.80\00:26:48.47 But join us next week for another episode. 00:26:48.50\00:26:51.67 In the meantime, pick up the phone and give us a call 00:26:51.71\00:26:54.34 at 800-525-9192. 00:26:54.38\00:26:59.25 Mention the NEWSTART Now program 00:26:59.28\00:27:02.02 and receive the NEWSTART Special. 00:27:02.05\00:27:04.42
