¤ ¤ 00:00:01.53\00:01:10.93 Hi friends and welcome to another edition of 00:01:10.97\00:01:14.04 NEWSTART Now. I'm your host, Ron Giannoni. In our studio 00:01:14.07\00:01:18.64 today we have a young man by the name of Mark Jensen from 00:01:18.67\00:01:23.21 Prescott, Arizona. I'd like you to take a look at when he first 00:01:23.24\00:01:27.58 arrived. 00:01:27.62\00:01:31.12 Well approximately about five years ago I started to develop 00:01:31.15\00:01:35.32 some medical conditions. I've dealt with type II diabetes for 00:01:35.39\00:01:39.53 probably 10 years now, but starting about five years ago 00:01:39.56\00:01:43.83 I started to have some heart issues and I developed 00:01:43.87\00:01:47.54 congestive heart failure. My infraction rate is down to about 00:01:47.57\00:01:51.04 15 to 20 percent which is a pretty weak heart. They don't 00:01:51.07\00:01:54.84 know if it was a virus or what. I also developed some kidney and 00:01:54.88\00:02:00.98 liver issues as far as failure. I developed ascites where I go 00:02:01.02\00:02:07.19 and have a paracentesis, even today once to twice a month. 00:02:07.26\00:02:12.43 And my skin was diagnosed with a skin disorder coming from my 00:02:12.46\00:02:17.60 kidneys which called perforating collagenases. So I have quite a 00:02:17.63\00:02:21.97 few issues and that's what I'm dealing with right now. What I'd 00:02:22.00\00:02:26.54 like to see happen before I leave here is to learn to live a 00:02:26.57\00:02:32.25 different nutritional lifestyle to battle these issues I'm 00:02:32.28\00:02:37.79 dealing with. Through the encouragement of the church and 00:02:37.82\00:02:42.79 the sponsorship of a very gracious couple in my church 00:02:42.82\00:02:47.76 I'm here today. Otherwise I wouldn't be here. 00:02:47.80\00:02:51.10 Welcome back friends. Mark how are you brother? 00:02:51.13\00:02:54.40 Good to see you Ron. 00:02:54.44\00:02:55.77 Man, you know, I'm so excited for you for a lot of reasons. 00:02:55.80\00:03:00.08 Because I remember when Paul and I came to do the first interview 00:03:00.11\00:03:05.05 and you said to us, You now I might look okay but I'm a very 00:03:05.08\00:03:08.35 sick man. And Paul and I kind of looked at each other going 00:03:08.38\00:03:12.45 what is he talking about here? Then during the interview we 00:03:12.49\00:03:16.62 find out that you've got congestive heart failure, your 00:03:16.66\00:03:20.76 heart isn't pumping the fluids, your stomach is... Well tell us: 00:03:20.80\00:03:26.33 Distended. I had ascites. I was dealing with type II diabetes. 00:03:26.37\00:03:31.67 I had a skin condition called perforating collagenosis which 00:03:31.71\00:03:36.98 was caused by a kidney problem. 00:03:37.01\00:03:40.28 Amazing. How many pills were you on? 00:03:40.32\00:03:43.49 I was on six bottles of pills. I was on two diuretics, two 00:03:43.55\00:03:50.83 heart pills and I was on two other heart pills. All six of 00:03:50.86\00:03:58.13 those, I'm off, I'm not taking those anymore. 00:03:58.17\00:03:59.50 What about medication for diabetes? 00:03:59.53\00:04:01.70 Well that too. Maybe I missed that one. 00:04:01.77\00:04:04.94 Maybe you missed that one. 00:04:04.97\00:04:06.31 I'm off six bottles, yeah. 00:04:06.34\00:04:07.68 You're off all of them? 00:04:07.71\00:04:09.04 Yes. 00:04:09.08\00:04:10.41 What do you attribute that to? 00:04:10.45\00:04:11.78 I attribute it to this program and the lifestyle I've learned. 00:04:11.81\00:04:14.98 The eight principles of this program and of course God and 00:04:15.05\00:04:18.45 his help. 00:04:18.49\00:04:19.82 You actually are a miracle. We look at you as a miracle. 00:04:19.85\00:04:24.89 Because it was the second day that you said to Dr. Kuninobo, 00:04:24.93\00:04:31.60 you said Doc something happened to me last night. Do you 00:04:31.63\00:04:35.97 remember that? 00:04:36.00\00:04:37.34 No I don't. What did he say? 00:04:37.37\00:04:38.71 He said well what happened? You said, I lost like five 00:04:38.74\00:04:43.68 pounds. Something happened. I'm a changed man. 00:04:43.71\00:04:46.68 Yeah. I started losing right away. 00:04:46.72\00:04:49.75 I know. But 30, how many pounds have you lost? 00:04:49.78\00:04:52.92 Thirty-four pounds totally in 18 days. 00:04:52.95\00:04:55.76 Well it's not quite 18 yet. 00:04:55.79\00:04:57.76 Well maybe I got a couple more pounds to go. 00:04:57.79\00:05:02.03 Ah, it's about 18. 00:05:02.06\00:05:04.47 But 34 pounds. That is unbelievable and off all your 00:05:04.50\00:05:09.64 medications. Yes. So what do you think of your doctor? 00:05:09.70\00:05:14.78 Oh, I thought he was excellent. I mean, how many times do you 00:05:14.81\00:05:18.98 go into to your doctor and he prays with you, he encourages 00:05:19.01\00:05:22.38 you, he explains everything better that any other doctor 00:05:22.42\00:05:26.22 I've ever been with. He was amazing, absolutely amazing. 00:05:26.25\00:05:31.29 He's a wonderful man. Yes. Truly blessed. You're lucky to 00:05:31.33\00:05:35.70 be with him. 00:05:35.73\00:05:37.07 Of course, you're lucky to be with any of our doctors. It's 00:05:37.10\00:05:39.77 divine providence a God thing. 00:05:41.60\00:05:42.94 One other thing, his wife, Eilene, she was the nutritionist 00:05:42.97\00:05:48.88 for me and she was amazing too. She really helped me get right 00:05:48.91\00:05:54.92 on track with the diet and everything I should eat, the 00:05:54.95\00:06:00.26 portions. In fact, she was my little I would say mafia guard 00:06:00.29\00:06:03.36 behind my shoulder when I went to the buffet. I'd see her 00:06:03.39\00:06:07.93 behind me and I go, oh no, I'll put that back, okay? But that 00:06:07.96\00:06:12.50 was... She was a blessing. 00:06:12.53\00:06:14.60 Man, you look different. You're starting to glow. 00:06:14.67\00:06:17.84 Yeah, that's awesome. So what was your favorite part of the 00:06:17.87\00:06:24.58 program? 00:06:24.61\00:06:25.95 I'll say my favorite part was probably Damon. Damon Sneed the 00:06:25.98\00:06:31.75 pastor here, was absolutely amazing, his spiritual insight. 00:06:31.79\00:06:37.13 And today he ended this with just the most amazing message 00:06:37.16\00:06:41.80 I've ever heard. He gave me trust and faith in God. How to 00:06:41.83\00:06:45.67 go on with this program and continue with it and the eight 00:06:45.70\00:06:49.64 principles. He was a blessing. That was probably my favorite 00:06:49.67\00:06:53.34 part. But I would say all the parts were very important. But 00:06:53.38\00:06:56.81 second of all, the second most favorite part for me was the 00:06:56.85\00:07:00.52 education because I had trained doctors teaching me in lectures 00:07:00.55\00:07:04.72 every day on how to apply this program. Not only how to apply 00:07:04.75\00:07:09.06 this program but they would give the scientific details of why 00:07:09.09\00:07:12.99 and I'm a person that wants to know why. But he would explain 00:07:13.03\00:07:16.73 it and when I understood it, I go yes, this is God's plan, this 00:07:16.77\00:07:20.47 is the way we do it. 00:07:20.50\00:07:21.84 It's God's plan that's for sure. That's why it's so effective. 00:07:21.87\00:07:27.04 Yes. You know we have an amazing staff of doctors here. They're 00:07:27.08\00:07:32.38 all wonderful and they are the ones that do the lectures. 00:07:32.41\00:07:38.25 I get to be involved in one and there's a couple of the doctors, 00:07:38.29\00:07:42.52 Dr. Bivens, I'm sure you've met him. They all have this health 00:07:42.56\00:07:47.13 message down pat. Dr. Kuninobo has a master's in public health 00:07:47.16\00:07:52.07 along with lifestyle and being a family practitioner down in 00:07:52.10\00:07:57.14 San Diego for a number of years so, yeah, we have a great staff 00:07:57.17\00:08:02.18 Did you find the food easy to switch from your previous 00:08:02.21\00:08:10.59 lifestyle? 00:08:10.62\00:08:12.12 It was relatively easy at first and then later got amazing. 00:08:12.15\00:08:18.99 Amazing? 00:08:19.03\00:08:20.36 Because one of my hobbies is cooking so when I got in that 00:08:20.40\00:08:23.83 culinary school with Michelle Irwin it was amazing. So after 00:08:23.87\00:08:28.27 all this time I mean she taught us amazing recipes backed up by 00:08:28.30\00:08:32.67 the book from NEWSTART on great recipes I can take home. 00:08:32.71\00:08:35.98 I bought a few books here at the bookstore on vegan cooking and 00:08:36.01\00:08:40.55 I'm so excited because the flavors were great. All the 00:08:40.58\00:08:43.28 buffets were great. The kitchen staff was great. You know, it 00:08:43.35\00:08:47.96 was wonderful. 00:08:47.99\00:08:49.32 What did you think of Michelle participating in the program? 00:08:49.36\00:08:53.43 At first I didn't know who she was and the first day I went 00:08:53.46\00:08:57.07 into the buffet line and I looked at the food and I go oh 00:08:57.10\00:08:59.87 boy, I wonder what this is going to taste like and she says 00:08:59.90\00:09:04.44 don't worry brother it'll be okay. But it was amazing when 00:09:04.47\00:09:08.44 I found out that she was going to be the cook and when I 00:09:08.48\00:09:12.01 actually saw her in action, I mean she is just amazing. 00:09:12.05\00:09:15.62 Very talented lady. 00:09:15.65\00:09:17.49 Very talented, yes. 00:09:17.55\00:09:19.72 So was your room okay? 00:09:19.75\00:09:21.86 It was very nice. I would say five star. It was very 00:09:21.89\00:09:26.09 comfortable, very cozy. The room service was excellent. I mean, 00:09:26.13\00:09:30.23 I think the only thing I missed was maybe turning down the bed 00:09:30.27\00:09:34.34 and the chocolate on there, but I'm not supposed to eat 00:09:34.37\00:09:36.40 chocolate so... 00:09:36.44\00:09:37.77 Right, the carob. Okay. You didn't get the carob. 00:09:37.81\00:09:41.14 Not unless I put it there. 00:09:41.18\00:09:44.28 Oh wow. Well it's just amazing that you've gone through this 00:09:44.31\00:09:49.68 experience and received so much and I truly believe it's a 00:09:49.72\00:09:55.02 miracle, it's God's hand at work in you. So what are you going to 00:09:55.06\00:09:59.63 do when you get home and all these people are looking at you 00:09:59.66\00:10:02.43 and going what happened? What do you tell them? 00:10:02.46\00:10:05.73 I'm going to tell them about the lifestyle I'm in, about the 00:10:05.77\00:10:10.11 eight principles, you know. The nutrition, I mean everything. 00:10:10.14\00:10:15.34 All eight of the principles. The exercise, the water, the 00:10:15.38\00:10:20.62 sunlight, the temperance, the air, the rest, the trust. 00:10:20.65\00:10:24.55 And when I say those words, those are just words but you 00:10:24.59\00:10:27.69 listen to those lectures and they explain why it's so 00:10:27.72\00:10:31.43 important, especially with Biblical background to explain 00:10:31.46\00:10:35.56 why it is important, why it works. It's amazing and that's 00:10:35.60\00:10:39.63 what I'm going to tell them. 00:10:39.67\00:10:41.00 Is your family going to be on board with you on this deal? 00:10:41.04\00:10:42.67 Yes, they will be, I'm sure they will. They're going to see a 00:10:42.70\00:10:46.98 difference. If I can convince them that this is the way to go 00:10:47.01\00:10:51.25 and hopefully I'll be the proof of that. 00:10:51.28\00:10:53.08 When I went through the program my daughter saw what I did and 00:10:53.11\00:10:58.02 she said Dad would you teach me what you learned. So I coached 00:10:58.05\00:11:04.43 her and she lost 126 pounds. She was quite large. But we see that 00:11:04.46\00:11:10.80 here over the years. Myself about a hundred pounds. 00:11:10.83\00:11:14.94 I have a 36-year-old son who's dealing with some of the stuff 00:11:14.97\00:11:19.07 I was. He would desperately need this program and he keeps 00:11:19.11\00:11:23.14 calling me every other day, every third day: How's it 00:11:23.18\00:11:26.68 going Dad, how's it working. You're kidding, you've lost that 00:11:26.72\00:11:29.58 much weight? And he said Dad will you show me something he 00:11:29.62\00:11:32.92 when he gets home. And I said only if you're coachable. 00:11:32.95\00:11:36.46 If you're coachable I'm right there with you. You know. 00:11:36.52\00:11:40.10 Mark I want to thank you for taking your time and God bless 00:11:40.13\00:11:44.73 bless you. I hope to talk to you in the near future. Thank you 00:11:44.77\00:11:49.50 friends. Don't go away because Dr. K, I like that, it rhymes, 00:11:49.54\00:11:54.21 will be right with us. 00:11:54.24\00:11:58.85 type II diabetes and chronic obesity. This includes heart 00:12:02.58\00:12:07.06 attacks and strokes. That 6-1/2 747s crashing every day. What's 00:12:07.09\00:12:11.39 even worse than that is that the fix is easy. It's your 00:12:11.43\00:12:15.16 lifestyle. Wouldn't it be nice if you could actually add 00:12:15.20\00:12:19.00 quality years to your life rather than dying one organ at a 00:12:19.03\00:12:22.80 time? Obesity and diabetes are the cause of over a million deaths per year. Most 00:12:22.84\00:12:26.51 diseases are reversible because most diseases are lifestyle 00:12:26.54\00:12:30.41 diseases; especially type II diabetes and chronic obesity. 00:12:30.45\00:12:34.52 Seriously now they can be reversed and the quality of your 00:12:34.55\00:12:38.62 life can be renewed. 00:12:38.65\00:12:39.99 You will see dramatic changes in the first few days of our 00:12:47.16\00:12:50.03 program and you will be on the road to a better, more robust 00:12:50.07\00:12:52.90 quality of life. The NEWSTART programs are simple and 00:12:52.93\00:12:59.84 Welcome back friends. Help me welcome Dr. Kuninobo. 00:12:59.87\00:13:06.75 Thanks Ron, how are you? 00:13:06.78\00:13:08.12 I'm well. You know I'm really excited about talking to you 00:13:08.15\00:13:11.89 about this guy. Oh, me too. 00:13:11.92\00:13:14.46 You know here's another, I don't want to call them patient, 00:13:14.52\00:13:19.79 because they're not. They're really guests. They're guests. 00:13:19.83\00:13:25.10 And a miracle has happened. 00:13:25.13\00:13:26.70 Yes, a miracle has happened. 00:13:26.74\00:13:28.27 When I first went to grab him for the first interview, he said 00:13:28.30\00:13:33.11 to me, You know I know I look pretty well but I'm a very sick 00:13:33.14\00:13:37.45 man. I looked at him. I go, you don't look sick to me. But what 00:13:37.48\00:13:41.78 do I know anyway. But later to find out he's got all these 00:13:41.82\00:13:45.82 conditions and problems. Talk about that, if you don't mind. 00:13:45.85\00:13:49.82 Sure. Can we share that with our viewers? Absolutely. 00:13:49.86\00:13:52.69 Yeah, he came as a very sick man and he's right, he didn't 00:13:52.73\00:13:58.67 look that sick on the outside. But, he has diabetes, but that 00:13:58.70\00:14:04.64 wasn't the big thing. 00:14:04.67\00:14:06.01 No that was nothing, right? 00:14:06.04\00:14:07.38 His big problem is his heart. He has been struggling with the 00:14:07.41\00:14:13.18 heart for a number of years and he has very significant heart 00:14:13.21\00:14:19.05 failure, the kind of heart failure that leads... really the 00:14:19.09\00:14:24.36 technical term... It doesn't matter, a concept of any pump 00:14:24.39\00:14:29.60 that fails like when your sump pump at home fails the basement 00:14:29.63\00:14:33.70 backs up with water. Gives you a pretty good idea that's where 00:14:33.74\00:14:36.24 his heart was. Fluid was backing up, it was causing problems in 00:14:36.27\00:14:43.41 addition to his previous life style with alcohol and things 00:14:43.95\00:14:48.08 that had kind of affected his liver already. And you add pump 00:14:48.12\00:14:50.02 failure on top of it and his liver was failing as well and he 00:14:50.05\00:14:55.42 was filling up with fluid in places that you're not supposed 00:14:55.46\00:14:59.36 to, like in the abdominal cavity and down in the legs. And it was 00:14:59.39\00:15:04.07 so significant that his specialist was having to 00:15:04.10\00:15:09.50 drain fluid out of his abdomen. 00:15:09.54\00:15:12.11 I understand once a week. 00:15:12.14\00:15:13.48 Well it started off like monthly like four to five liters, then 00:15:13.51\00:15:18.78 it went to every two weeks and just before coming to the 00:15:18.81\00:15:21.62 NEWSTART program he decided that he should go early only after 00:15:21.65\00:15:25.15 one week from his last drain. So two days before coming here he 00:15:25.19\00:15:31.16 went to see the doctor and he drained and he pulled off four 00:15:31.19\00:15:36.03 and a half liters, just after one week. He was accumulating 00:15:36.06\00:15:40.84 so rapidly and even more disturbing and concerning was 00:15:40.87\00:15:44.31 that his leg swelling had just dramatically worsened in just 00:15:44.37\00:15:48.58 the last month to six weeks. So he was going downhill. His 00:15:48.61\00:15:52.31 specialist was saying ideally in your situation we would like 00:15:52.35\00:15:55.98 to really put a permanent drain in that we can work with. But 00:15:56.02\00:15:59.79 the problem with those is that it's not if, it's when, they get 00:15:59.82\00:16:03.53 infected which is usually the end of a person's life. Oh boy. 00:16:03.56\00:16:07.46 And actually his sister had died of complications of the drain 00:16:07.50\00:16:11.40 and they had similar problems. Wow. So this is a very, very 00:16:11.43\00:16:15.97 serious, serious situation. So that was the condition that he 00:16:16.00\00:16:20.51 came in. 00:16:20.54\00:16:21.88 That's when he arrived. Now let's get to the good stuff. 00:16:21.91\00:16:23.65 Let's get to the good stuff. 00:16:23.68\00:16:25.01 I know the second day he was here he came and saw you. 00:16:25.05\00:16:28.68 He did. And what did he say to you? 00:16:28.72\00:16:31.19 Well I saw him for his initial visit with the doctor. We spent 00:16:31.25\00:16:35.02 an hour talking. That's when I got acquainted with all these 00:16:35.06\00:16:38.79 problems. And we had prayed together and I was really 00:16:38.83\00:16:41.20 praying for him because I said this is a serious situation. 00:16:41.26\00:16:44.33 It's going to be nothing but a miracle that's really going to 00:16:44.37\00:16:47.44 start to turn things around. Yeah, Tuesday morning at 00:16:47.47\00:16:50.74 breakfast he came up to me almost with a bewildered almost 00:16:50.77\00:16:55.18 shocked look. He said something happened last night. I go what 00:16:55.21\00:16:57.91 do you mean something happened. Okay what happened? Something 00:16:57.95\00:17:06.09 bad happened. He goes, I lost five pounds overnight look at my 00:17:06.12\00:17:10.59 legs and you could see his leg swelling was down. He says, I 00:17:10.63\00:17:12.79 lost five pounds of fluid last night. That's never happened. 00:17:12.83\00:17:16.97 I said, no that doesn't usually happen. And I was like... 00:17:17.03\00:17:21.14 Now that's Tuesday morning? 00:17:21.17\00:17:22.50 This is Tuesday morning. 00:17:22.54\00:17:23.87 And he got here Sunday night? 00:17:23.91\00:17:25.24 Sunday night. 00:17:25.27\00:17:26.84 So a gain half a pass. 00:17:26.88\00:17:28.21 Well nothing had happened yet on Monday. 00:17:28.24\00:17:29.61 Oh nothing happened Monday? 00:17:29.64\00:17:31.28 No, that's when we got together and he was concerned about how 00:17:31.31\00:17:34.58 bad his legs were. I had talked about a few simple things we 00:17:34.62\00:17:38.32 were going to try, and modify NEWSTART for to help proteins 00:17:38.35\00:17:41.99 and various things in his system but that was not enough time for 00:17:42.02\00:17:46.16 that to start working. God did something during the night for 00:17:46.19\00:17:50.57 him. Amazing. Just amazing. And from that point every day he was 00:17:50.60\00:17:54.90 just losing fluid. His tummy was just going down. His leg 00:17:54.94\00:17:59.37 swelling was going down. Now he has no, I mean, you just can't 00:17:59.41\00:18:04.41 find the fluid that was on his belly any longer. His legs are 00:18:04.45\00:18:09.55 completely back to normal. He has normal looking legs now. 00:18:09.58\00:18:14.62 He's lost how much weight? 00:18:14.66\00:18:16.22 Thirty-four pounds. Wow! Thirty- four pounds. Amazing. 00:18:16.26\00:18:22.13 And so rapid a loss of fluid that we had to cut back on his 00:18:22.16\00:18:26.10 medication because his blood pressure was going to start 00:18:26.13\00:18:31.37 going down. He's no longer on the two medications we call 00:18:31.41\00:18:35.51 diuretics that normally push fluid out. He's no longer on 00:18:35.54\00:18:39.61 those, hasn't been for the last I forgot, close to a week and 00:18:39.65\00:18:44.92 he's still losing fluid. We had to put his heart medications 00:18:44.95\00:18:48.72 down because his blood pressure was too low. He's not on his 00:18:48.76\00:18:52.43 diabetes medication or his insulin any longer and his blood 00:18:52.46\00:18:56.16 sugar is running a little bit. He still wants it down 00:18:56.20\00:18:58.60 lower. It's low 100s now. I'm just sitting in awe of God 00:18:58.63\00:19:03.84 because, make no mistake, this is not we adjusted and did 00:19:03.87\00:19:08.88 something with plant based diet or something. Yeah, he did all 00:19:08.91\00:19:13.05 of these things that God has given us, but God did something 00:19:13.08\00:19:17.52 very special for this man and I can't help but think of 00:19:17.55\00:19:23.02 something he told me that came to his mind early on. It was 00:19:23.06\00:19:27.26 either maybe that Monday night he said he kind of went back 00:19:27.30\00:19:30.80 after he saw the look on my face going through all these things 00:19:30.83\00:19:34.20 he said frankly Doc I was a little discouraged that I could 00:19:34.24\00:19:38.41 tell that you could see how sick I was. He was a little scared. 00:19:38.44\00:19:43.01 But he said you know I went back and I just told God I'm at the 00:19:43.04\00:19:47.75 point Lord that my life is in your hands and whether I live 00:19:47.78\00:19:51.99 or die it doesn't matter any more. You know what, I think 00:19:52.02\00:19:56.16 that when we come to the point with God that you can just trust 00:19:56.19\00:20:01.33 him, truly trust him. I don't know if that's why God was 00:20:01.36\00:20:06.43 unable to do something, I don't know if it was the prayers of 00:20:06.47\00:20:10.24 yourself, the rest of the staff whose prayers. God has a very 00:20:10.27\00:20:15.48 special purpose and He's certainly glorified by this 00:20:15.51\00:20:18.48 man's testimony that he will have to share when he goes back 00:20:18.51\00:20:21.52 to Arizona because it is a tremendous testimony to the 00:20:21.55\00:20:26.42 grace of God. 00:20:26.45\00:20:27.82 Amen. You know this might be a good time just to say to our 00:20:27.86\00:20:31.46 viewers, if you have a condition that you've given up you need to 00:20:31.49\00:20:38.93 get here. We don't know if you're going to get better, we 00:20:38.97\00:20:41.77 don't know anything. We have doctors who'll look after you 00:20:41.80\00:20:44.57 but we've seen more times where people have come here 00:20:44.61\00:20:50.91 discouraged, ready to give up on life and they get well. Most get 00:20:50.95\00:20:56.52 better for sure but some of them as we've seen with Dr. Kuninobo 00:20:56.58\00:21:02.12 this man has experienced a miracle and God does have a plan 00:21:02.16\00:21:07.10 for him I'm sure of that. Maybe it's back in Arizona I don't 00:21:07.13\00:21:12.07 know. Maybe it's just for us to view and give us more courage 00:21:12.13\00:21:16.74 to bring more people here. Because sometimes if people are 00:21:16.77\00:21:20.58 too sick we can't help them, at least was think we can't. But 00:21:20.61\00:21:24.41 here's an example. 00:21:24.45\00:21:25.78 And we can't, but we don't know what God has planned. 00:21:25.81\00:21:32.35 That's true and I just praise God for this. You know just the 00:21:32.39\00:21:37.36 opportunity to be here and witness what's going on. I just 00:21:37.39\00:21:41.40 want to thank you. Thank you for your time for being here 00:21:41.43\00:21:45.37 and all the work you do at the NEWSTART program. I look forward 00:21:45.40\00:21:50.64 to our next interview. Absolutely. 00:21:50.67\00:21:52.84 And thank you friends but don't go away. Dr. Nedley and Dr. 00:21:52.87\00:21:58.45 Ramirez are up next. 00:21:58.48\00:22:01.75 ¤ ¤ 00:22:01.78\00:22:34.98 Welcome to NEWSTART Now. I'm Dr. Neal Nedley and with me is 00:22:35.02\00:22:39.45 Dr. Eddy Ramirez. He's one of the researching physicians here 00:22:39.49\00:22:43.53 at Weimar Institute. He also teaches the research methods 00:22:43.56\00:22:47.50 and design class at the Weimar Institute College which is an 00:22:47.53\00:22:51.43 exciting place for premed and health career type of 00:22:51.47\00:22:57.51 researching students. But today we are actually going to discuss 00:22:57.54\00:23:02.08 a study that has been accepted for publication in the journal 00:23:02.14\00:23:06.55 Atherosclerosis, Thrombosis and Vascular Biology. Many of our 00:23:06.58\00:23:11.05 studies that we produce here at Weimar are looking at thousands 00:23:11.09\00:23:15.52 of patients, or at least hundreds of patients. 00:23:15.56\00:23:17.76 Sometimes we'll take a look at like just the pediatric group 00:23:17.79\00:23:22.60 and look at eleven child cases that came through with obesity. 00:23:22.63\00:23:28.60 But today I'd just like to focus in on a study that was published 00:23:28.67\00:23:33.91 for one patient. Now why is the journal allowing one patient. 00:23:33.94\00:23:38.85 Here's the thing. Every one of our studies is actually real 00:23:38.88\00:23:42.72 people. This isn't data. When we're dealing with hundreds and 00:23:42.75\00:23:47.02 tens and thousands of patients those are all real lives and 00:23:47.06\00:23:52.09 times it's good to just focus in on one patient and what they 00:23:52.13\00:23:56.46 came with here to NEWSTART. And this guy was a sick guy. Tell 00:23:56.50\00:24:00.77 us a little bit about him. 00:24:00.84\00:24:02.17 He had what we call the metabolic syndrome. 00:24:02.20\00:24:04.37 He had diabetes, he had hypertension, his lipids were 00:24:04.41\00:24:09.14 not very good and even though he was taking three medications 00:24:09.44\00:24:15.82 he was out of control. His blood pressure was 150/78 when he came 00:24:15.85\00:24:20.96 first here today. He was taking three medications and still his 00:24:20.99\00:24:26.06 glucose was not under control, his blood pressure was not 00:24:26.09\00:24:29.53 under control. 00:24:29.56\00:24:31.07 Now ideally your systolic blood pressure should be less than 00:24:31.10\00:24:36.50 115. So he was 150 despite three different... 00:24:36.54\00:24:41.48 Two medications for the blood pressure. 00:24:41.51\00:24:42.84 Yeah, okay he has two medicines for blood pressure and one 00:24:42.88\00:24:47.22 one medicine for diabetes. How much did this gentleman weigh? 00:24:47.25\00:24:51.59 When he came here he was weighing 381 pounds and just 00:24:51.62\00:24:59.53 in 18 days he was able to lose 16 pounds and one of the first 00:24:59.56\00:25:03.80 first things that changed was his blood pressure. He ended up 00:25:03.83\00:25:06.40 with a blood pressure of 116/72. We had to actually decrease 00:25:06.43\00:25:12.81 some of the medication he was taking. 00:25:12.94\00:25:14.74 Okay, so now he's getting close to that ideal, 116 and that's 00:25:14.78\00:25:19.91 very good coming down from 150 and you're actually reducing the 00:25:19.95\00:25:25.05 medicines at the same time. Otherwise it really would have 00:25:25.09\00:25:29.39 gotten too low. 00:25:29.42\00:25:30.76 So this was in August when he came and after he finished he 00:25:30.79\00:25:33.26 didn't say oh I'm finished, I'm going to go back to my old life 00:25:33.29\00:25:36.26 style. No, he made a commitment to change his lifestyle 00:25:36.30\00:25:40.40 permanently. So in August he comes. By the time that he 00:25:40.44\00:25:44.47 continues interacting with his head physician, by May the next 00:25:44.51\00:25:49.18 year his physician had to suspend all medications. He no 00:25:49.21\00:25:52.85 longer needed that medication. 00:25:52.88\00:25:54.68 Wow. So now he's off all medicines and what is he 00:25:54.72\00:25:58.19 weighing about this time? 00:25:58.22\00:25:59.55 Two hundred and seventy pounds. 00:25:59.59\00:26:01.66 Okay, so he's lost 100 pounds. That's amazing and that's 00:26:01.69\00:26:06.09 without the complications of this gastric bypass surgery. 00:26:06.13\00:26:10.17 A lot of people are going for gastric bypass and I can tell 00:26:10.23\00:26:13.97 you if you would find out the complications of this surgery 00:26:14.00\00:26:18.44 vitamin deficiency, all sorts of things, the skin changes that 00:26:18.47\00:26:22.74 take place, all the lifestyle changes you're going to be 00:26:22.78\00:26:26.51 forced to do you're much better coming to NEWSTART. Not only is 00:26:26.55\00:26:30.25 it far less expensive but it's a much healthier way to go. 00:26:30.29\00:26:33.46 And then by July, that's from May, by July we do a lab test 00:26:33.49\00:26:37.66 everything perfectly normal. Cholesterol's the most 00:26:37.69\00:26:41.33 encouraging. Hemoglobin A1C of 5.5. He was no longer considered 00:26:41.36\00:26:46.84 a diabetic. He actually had stopped his diabetes completely. 00:26:46.87\00:26:52.24 Wow. So he reversed the diabetes he didn't even have to be called 00:26:52.27\00:26:56.34 a diabetic. No longer having high blood pressure and what is 00:26:56.38\00:27:00.18 his weight around this time then? 00:27:00.22\00:27:02.75 I don't have the weight by then by August I do have his final 00:27:02.78\00:27:08.86 weight. So we started in August 2003. By January 2005 he had 00:27:08.89\00:27:14.96 lost 141 pounds. 00:27:15.00\00:27:17.63 A 141 pounds. 00:27:17.67\00:27:20.24 So a totally new person. Now energetic, now able to sleep, 00:27:20.27\00:27:25.74 because of the excess weight he was having issues with sleep 00:27:25.77\00:27:30.55 apnea and these type of things. Those things reversed as a 00:27:30.58\00:27:35.28 result of this intensive life style intervention. 00:27:35.32\00:27:37.85 A normal, healthy, good looking individual, now disease free as 00:27:37.89\00:27:43.12 a result of coming to NEWSTART who was 380 pounds and way out 00:27:43.16\00:27:48.33 of control at first. Well it's exciting. I know why the 00:27:48.36\00:27:52.20 journal accepted this for publication because this can 00:27:52.23\00:27:56.00 also be someone you know or maybe yourself. And I'm Dr. Neal 00:27:56.04\00:28:01.38 Nedley and this is NEWSTART Now. Join us again next week. 00:28:01.41\00:28:06.72
