December 23 of 2014 I had quadruple bypass 00:01:29.12\00:01:34.16 surgery and they had to put a ring around my mitral valve to 00:01:34.19\00:01:39.83 stabilize it. And all of that is basically because of bad diet, 00:01:39.86\00:01:44.80 drugs and alcohol in my earlier years, which I've been away from 00:01:44.83\00:01:50.51 for more than 20 years, but they still have their affect. So my 00:01:50.54\00:01:56.18 body was saying you know you waited too long. I need help. 00:01:56.21\00:02:00.48 Yeah, I had quad bypass surgery, I have congestive heart failure, 00:02:00.52\00:02:07.89 I have uncontrolled diabetes, I'm in fourth stage kidney 00:02:07.92\00:02:11.99 failure. I have no strength in my legs anymore and I can hardly 00:02:12.03\00:02:18.07 walk and I just knew it was time I would like to have as much 00:02:18.10\00:02:24.04 health as I can. I don't care about a longer life necessarily 00:02:24.07\00:02:29.91 but I care about quality of life and I never learned these things 00:02:29.94\00:02:35.78 even though I grew up being taught these more or less and 00:02:35.82\00:02:42.76 it's just time. God gave me reprieve two years ago and I 00:02:42.79\00:02:49.66 want to take advantage of it and continue with my sermon ministry 00:02:49.70\00:02:51.97 that I do. 00:02:52.00\00:02:53.34 Welcome back friends and in our studio, O.K. I kept watching two hours after 00:04:17.55\00:04:23.16 eating and the numbers were just amazing. So there is really no 00:04:23.19\00:04:29.93 So what do you think. You know, you're a pastor of sorts, right, 00:04:29.96\00:04:36.67 you do, aren't you. 00:04:36.71\00:04:38.17 I have a sermon ministry that I do. I didn't write them but yeah 00:04:38.21\00:04:42.38 Yeah, I got it. What do you think has happened here? Is this 00:04:42.41\00:04:45.65 the NEWSTART program? 00:04:45.68\00:04:48.65 Is this God answering prayer? What is going on? 00:04:48.68\00:04:53.52 Well I mean the NEWSTART program is just a fulcrum, I think, for 00:04:53.56\00:04:59.46 what God does. God has already given us these things. I mean, 00:04:59.49\00:05:04.53 we didn't create the plants and the foods that we ate, but God 00:05:04.57\00:05:08.94 said these are the ones that I want for you and if you will do 00:05:08.97\00:05:13.48 that, you will have life and life more abundant. And it works 00:05:13.54\00:05:18.85 That's just what it is. So it's men cooperating, and women, with 00:05:18.88\00:05:24.19 God to bring about a new start. 00:05:24.22\00:05:26.55 How did you like the food here? 00:05:26.59\00:05:28.89 Ah, well that's going to be a tough one because I'm going to 00:05:28.92\00:05:33.93 miss it and I haven't even left yet and I miss it. No, it's been 00:05:33.96\00:05:38.07 great, the food is great. You know a lot of people think well 00:05:38.10\00:05:41.60 you know I'm only going to eat two meals a day. I mean, can 00:05:41.64\00:05:45.97 I make it? I've never felt hungry in the evenings. You know 00:05:46.04\00:05:51.91 because what I ate has satisfied satiated my needs. So the only 00:05:51.98\00:05:56.18 time it was ever a problem was when we were doing the three 00:05:56.22\00:06:00.42 day fast. 00:06:00.46\00:06:01.79 Oh, you did a fast? 00:06:01.82\00:06:03.16 Yeah, well and my room was right next to the kitchen so that was 00:06:03.19\00:06:07.10 kind of tough, but no God's been very good to me. And the thing 00:06:07.13\00:06:12.63 is he gave me the opportunity financially with the money that 00:06:12.70\00:06:20.34 I saved and donated money that I could be here. This is what I 00:06:20.38\00:06:26.05 needed to do. I want to go out and do my ministry. I want to go 00:06:26.11\00:06:31.25 out and do Red Cross and I know that the only way I could really 00:06:31.32\00:06:35.99 do it and be effective is I have to have that health mentally. 00:06:36.02\00:06:40.53 I mean what we do is good for the body but that really isn't 00:06:40.60\00:06:45.07 the point. The point is right here. If the body is healthy the 00:06:45.13\00:06:49.04 mind is healthy and happy and I can hear my heavenly Father 00:06:49.07\00:06:52.94 better and that's what I need. I need that. 00:06:52.97\00:06:55.98 How about your walking? Are you walking more and 00:06:56.01\00:06:58.71 enjoying it less or vice versa? 00:06:58.75\00:07:00.65 What it is is I had bad knees and while they still give me 00:07:00.68\00:07:06.72 problems I've been able to walk more and more. 00:07:06.76\00:07:09.29 Are you feeling stronger on those legs? 00:07:09.32\00:07:11.73 Yeah. They're getting much stronger. I was working out on 00:07:11.76\00:07:15.90 the machines and things like that. But, yeah, it's getting 00:07:15.96\00:07:19.00 much better. Doesn't mean I'm out of the woods. I mean, we've 00:07:19.03\00:07:23.10 only been here 18 days so but there are things to come, there 00:07:23.14\00:07:27.14 are blessings to come. 00:07:27.18\00:07:28.51 Amen. So how about when you get home. What are your plans for 00:07:28.54\00:07:32.35 once you leave here. You'll be leaving tomorrow, right? My edema that I had when I got 00:10:04.13\00:10:08.77 here is virtually nonexistent without medication and all 00:10:08.80\00:10:14.54 these things with the hydrotherapy and massage 00:10:14.58\00:10:17.35 and things like that, the food, just everything about it. 00:10:17.38\00:10:21.18 Plus where we can go walking. It's beautiful here. 00:10:21.22\00:10:24.42 Now you live in the woods? 00:10:24.45\00:10:26.96 Well I live in Wood Village which is a suburb of north east 00:10:26.99\00:10:32.83 Portland right there near the Columbia River. 00:10:32.86\00:10:35.90 Oh yeah. And can you walk along the river? 00:10:35.93\00:10:38.90 Well I'd have to either walk or drive down a couple miles 00:10:38.93\00:10:43.04 get to the river but yeah they have walking paths. One of the 00:10:43.07\00:10:47.91 things I want to do is I want to get a recumbent bike because 00:10:47.94\00:10:52.68 it's easier on my knees and the thing about Portland is it's 00:10:52.71\00:10:57.92 very friendly for bicycles. They encourage bicycles and tell 00:10:57.95\00:11:03.12 people to give them room. So it's a good place to be. 00:11:03.16\00:11:06.83 Okay, so you got a plan all set for when you leave here. 00:11:06.86\00:11:10.57 Did you see those little charts that Dr. Lukens handed out? 00:11:10.60\00:11:14.24 You going to fill those out and send them back. Last night I was listening to Neal Barnard 00:15:26.42\00:15:31.06 and they can get this off the net. He is the one that's 00:15:31.09\00:15:35.93 probably one of the leading experts on lifestyle change 00:15:35.96\00:15:40.64 and Physician's Committee for Responsible Medicine. He said 00:15:40.67\00:15:45.27 all through the years we've been doing all these different things 00:15:45.31\00:15:49.04 and people are not getting well. He talked about a guy who lost 00:15:49.08\00:15:52.81 60 pounds and he was in his later 30s and his family was 00:15:52.85\00:15:59.82 dying in their 30s, their male members were from diabetes and 00:15:59.85\00:16:04.03 after he lost the 60 pounds and he did all these things like 00:16:04.06\00:16:07.66 we're recommending here he says I don't know what to tell you 00:16:07.70\00:16:11.30 but you know you aren't a diabetic anymore. The guy said 00:16:11.33\00:16:15.60 well say on. But this has to get out. There's a big rigmarole 00:16:15.64\00:16:22.24 tug of war on this thing and there shouldn't be. Well anyway 00:16:22.28\00:16:29.62 by the second week, see when O.K. came in he started the fast 00:16:29.68\00:16:34.92 he did the three day fast and then by the second week we took 00:16:34.96\00:16:39.79 him off his medicines. He was a little worried about the sugar 00:16:39.83\00:16:43.90 being a little bit high so he used a little bit for a while 00:16:43.93\00:16:48.60 then he just stopped it and now his 2-hour blood sugars are 00:16:48.64\00:16:53.21 between 160 and 170 which is not perfect and his fasting's are 00:16:53.24\00:16:59.95 110 That's not perfect but he's so much better than he was when 00:16:59.98\00:17:04.39 he was taking all of his insulin and all of his pills to help his 00:17:04.42\00:17:09.49 heart and all the pills for the water in his legs. But you look at his knees He said that he was starting to 00:17:30.05\00:17:34.85 get sores. He had sores on his face; those are clearing up. We 00:17:34.88\00:17:39.65 took him off of his blood pressure medications, the one 00:17:39.69\00:17:42.29 that slows the heart down and keeps it from beating so hard. 00:17:42.32\00:17:46.19 But what if you need that extra pressure to get up to your brain 00:17:46.23\00:17:50.90 They find out if you get it too low. Somebody his age his blood 00:17:50.93\00:17:55.77 pressure could be 150 and 160 and we're trying to get it down 00:17:55.80\00:18:00.98 and find out that diabetics lose a lot more brain cells when 00:18:01.01\00:18:04.98 their blood pressure goes too low. So we can't look at our 00:18:05.01\00:18:08.35 numbers, we can't look at all this stuff. We have to look at 00:18:08.38\00:18:12.65 our health. He really did well. He could only do a minute and 00:18:12.69\00:18:16.69 some on his first treadmill. The second one he did a full 00:18:16.73\00:18:22.60 three minutes. He knows that the arteries in his legs are 00:18:22.63\00:18:28.44 plugged but the tiny that they dilate up to get 75 percent more 00:18:28.50\00:18:34.14 and we talked about that ad infinitum. Actually he said my 00:18:34.18\00:18:38.25 legs are stronger and they don't hurt. Coming up from the clinic 00:18:38.31\00:18:42.12 he had to stop three times just so that... He had problems in 00:18:42.15\00:18:45.85 his knees. I mean he was just a mess. Now here's the thing that 00:18:45.89\00:18:49.56 I want. People that have seen this before, this is what he 00:18:49.59\00:18:54.43 must fill out and it's the AV calendar. Dr. Nedley just said 00:18:54.46\00:18:59.17 in our last church service, he said people that are journaling 00:18:59.20\00:19:03.94 people that are keeping track then they are the ones that do 00:19:03.97\00:19:07.88 well and the other ones are just saying well, let's see what did 00:19:07.94\00:19:12.31 I do and they don't get it. No. This is an adaptation of Dr. 00:19:12.35\00:19:16.82 Ardalene on the Today Show and he's stressed that every time. 00:19:16.85\00:19:21.42 He said they've got to chart otherwise they're not going to 00:19:21.46\00:19:25.93 do it. His cardiologist and his brother is 00:20:03.40\00:20:07.90 a doctor they were flabbergasted They said I don't know what's 00:20:07.94\00:20:11.71 happening here but these people are getting well. You've got to 00:20:11.74\00:20:15.48 some back for a restart. 00:20:15.51\00:20:16.88 That's right. So we got several of them that need to come back 00:20:16.91\00:20:21.28 so... One was 00:21:22.04\00:21:28.68 a basketball player, he was, he's got to get back on the 00:21:28.72\00:21:31.12 court. But anyway I told them we get people off. He says aaah 00:21:31.15\00:21:35.92 I've never heard of such a thing You take people off their 00:21:35.96\00:21:40.50 insulin as well. I say yeah. And most of them we don't put 00:21:40.53\00:21:44.77 them back on. He says the only way that we can do that is to 00:21:44.83\00:21:49.10 do a gastric bypass on a person and then they have to lose 00:21:49.17\00:21:53.38 weight because they can't keep their weight on. I mean, gastric 00:21:53.44\00:21:57.48 bypass is a sentence, it's not a life. Some people do fairly well 00:21:57.51\00:22:01.55 but they usually gain it all back. There is a marker called 00:24:12.78\00:24:18.32 METS which tells us how fit a person is. And studies show that 00:24:18.35\00:24:24.16 if you reach a max of 10 or more your probability of dying, your 00:24:24.23\00:24:29.60 probability of getting sick decreases. What we found here is 00:24:29.66\00:24:35.00 that on average when the patients came here they came 00:24:35.04\00:24:38.91 with a max of 7.9, not a very good one. 00:24:38.94\00:24:41.44 No, not a very good one. 00:24:41.48\00:24:42.81 And by the end of the 18 days that number had increased to a 00:24:42.84\00:24:48.28 9.5, very close to that 10. 00:24:48.32\00:24:51.75 Nice. In just 18 days then they can go from unfit to actually 00:24:51.79\00:24:58.39 being fit. 00:24:58.43\00:24:59.96 And decreasing their mortality and decreasing their possibility 00:25:00.00\00:25:05.87 of sickness. 00:25:05.90\00:25:07.24 Yeah. You know exercise is very important to the immune system, 00:25:07.27\00:25:10.87 it's very important to heart health, it can even help avoid 00:25:10.91\00:25:14.54 some cancers. But it's not just exercise, it's exercise to the 00:25:14.58\00:25:18.18 point of becoming fit. So that's the E of NEWSTART. 00:25:18.21\00:25:22.65 That's right. Not only that other markers were also 00:25:22.68\00:25:27.09 improving at the same time as we publish here in this paper. 00:25:27.12\00:25:31.79 BMI the obesity level went down, blood pressures came down, 00:25:31.83\00:25:33.16 cholesterols came down. Every patient that comes here we submit them to a 00:25:49.28\00:25:53.48 stress test in order to check how their heart health is and 00:25:53.52\00:25:58.59 overall fitness and based on that stress test that gives us 00:25:58.62\00:26:03.96 that number, the ability of the body to utilize that oxygen in 00:26:03.99\00:26:09.43 an efficient way. So as the METS improve it means that the body 00:26:09.46\00:26:14.50 becomes more efficient to use the resources that we are giving 00:26:14.54\00:26:21.08 it. And as you become more fit it's like a car that is finely 00:26:21.11\00:26:26.25 tuned and it's able to burn the gasoline better and throw less 00:26:26.28\00:26:30.92 smoke. Something similar to this analogy is happening in the body 00:26:30.95\00:26:35.02 of these people as they improve that important measurement of 00:26:35.06\00:26:39.09 the METS. 00:26:39.13\00:26:40.46 Great.
