We have a message for you. 00:22:09.46\00:22:11.83 Hi, I'm Dr. Neil Nedley, President of Weimar Institute, 00:22:44.79\00:22:48.23 and this is NEWSTART Now. 00:22:48.26\00:22:50.67 With me today is Dr. Eddie Ramirez, 00:22:50.70\00:22:52.90 researcher, physician, and professor at Weimar College 00:22:52.93\00:22:57.54 teaching research design methods 00:22:57.57\00:22:59.64 and advanced research design methods. 00:22:59.67\00:23:01.84 And today, 00:23:01.88\00:23:03.21 we're actually taking a look at patients 00:23:03.24\00:23:05.81 that needed to have improvement 00:23:05.85\00:23:08.98 in depression and anxiety. 00:23:09.02\00:23:11.45 They were so severe 00:23:11.49\00:23:13.25 that the home-based version program 00:23:13.29\00:23:14.86 was not for them 00:23:14.89\00:23:16.22 or the community-based program wasn't for them. 00:23:16.26\00:23:18.59 They actually were severe enough, 00:23:18.63\00:23:19.96 they came to the residential program. 00:23:20.00\00:23:22.46 Most of the patients that come to our program 00:23:22.50\00:23:25.53 have significant suicidal thoughts, 00:23:25.57\00:23:28.27 and they are pretty severe types of cases. 00:23:28.30\00:23:31.44 And the program is designed 00:23:31.47\00:23:33.58 over a comprehensive approach 00:23:33.61\00:23:37.75 to actually leave no stone unturned 00:23:37.78\00:23:40.75 in improving the mental health of patients. 00:23:40.78\00:23:43.72 And this is an interesting twist 00:23:43.75\00:23:47.02 because this isn't just, 00:23:47.06\00:23:49.69 you know, typical NEWSTART types of things 00:23:49.72\00:23:52.66 which are nutrition, and exercise, 00:23:52.69\00:23:54.53 and water which can help mental health, 00:23:54.56\00:23:56.70 but this is utilizing a particular modality 00:23:56.73\00:24:01.00 in doing a little comparison trial. 00:24:01.04\00:24:02.80 Tell us about this study, Dr. Ramirez? 00:24:02.84\00:24:04.64 There are many patients 00:24:04.67\00:24:06.01 that come to our depression program 00:24:06.04\00:24:08.21 that are taking benzodiazepines, 00:24:08.24\00:24:11.11 and one of our goals in the therapy is to decrease 00:24:11.15\00:24:13.65 those short-term benzodiazepines. 00:24:13.68\00:24:16.48 And what we found out 00:24:16.52\00:24:17.85 is that as you're decreasing the dosage, 00:24:17.89\00:24:20.52 anxiety level goes up, and we're finding out 00:24:20.56\00:24:24.13 that this lavender oil taken orally actually helps 00:24:24.16\00:24:29.93 with that transition period as they're decreasing 00:24:29.96\00:24:33.17 those benzodiazepines and anxiety starts shooting up, 00:24:33.20\00:24:38.37 the lavender oil has that calming effect 00:24:38.41\00:24:42.21 in order to substitute from something 00:24:42.24\00:24:44.25 that is potentially very addictive to something 00:24:44.28\00:24:47.12 that is not as addictive as this lavender oil. 00:24:47.15\00:24:50.59 Okay, yes, lavender oil, the active ingredient 00:24:50.62\00:24:53.92 that was studied is called Silexan 80, 00:24:53.96\00:24:56.59 so it's a particular molecule that comes from lavender oil, 00:24:56.62\00:25:00.60 and it's been shown 00:25:00.63\00:25:01.96 to actually improve depression and anxiety. 00:25:02.00\00:25:05.47 Is that what it showed in this study as well? 00:25:05.50\00:25:07.54 Yes, absolutely. 00:25:07.57\00:25:09.57 The group of patients 00:25:09.60\00:25:11.84 that we were studying had an average, 00:25:11.87\00:25:14.98 an anxiety level of 23.5 00:25:15.01\00:25:18.71 which is very high type of anxiety, 00:25:18.75\00:25:22.25 the type of anxiety that you see in the ER, 00:25:22.28\00:25:25.45 the type of person that feels that they cannot handle it, 00:25:25.49\00:25:29.02 they have to run to the ER. 00:25:29.06\00:25:31.19 And we were showing that, as we were combining 00:25:31.23\00:25:34.93 the lifestyle interventions and lavender oil, 00:25:34.96\00:25:39.87 three times a day, PRN as needed. 00:25:39.90\00:25:43.77 By the end of the program that anxiety level 00:25:43.81\00:25:47.04 from 23.5 came down 00:25:47.08\00:25:49.94 to 10.5 on average. 00:25:49.98\00:25:53.25 And that's even while they are reducing benzos... 00:25:53.28\00:25:56.79 That's right. 00:25:56.82\00:25:58.15 And, of course, the benzos are being reduced 00:25:58.19\00:25:59.55 'cause that worsens your frontal lobe, 00:25:59.59\00:26:02.56 and that worsens your ability to actually be on a program 00:26:02.59\00:26:07.13 that's conducive to improving depression 00:26:07.16\00:26:09.43 and anxiety like changing your thoughts, 00:26:09.46\00:26:12.20 and going through other lifestyle changes. 00:26:12.23\00:26:15.34 And so the benzos are reduced, 00:26:15.37\00:26:17.07 and the anxiety level went down to, 00:26:17.11\00:26:20.44 way less than half. 00:26:20.48\00:26:22.44 What happened to the depression scores?
