00:10 Every year in America,
00:12 there are over one million deaths 00:13 because of type 2 diabetes and chronic obesity. 00:16 This includes heart attacks and strokes. 00:18 That's 6.5 747s crashing every day. 00:22 What's even more surprising is that the fix is easy. 00:25 It's your lifestyle. 00:27 Wouldn't it be nice if you could actually add 00:29 quality years to your life 00:30 rather than dying one organ at a time? 00:33 Obesity and diabetes 00:34 are the cause of over a million deaths per year. 00:37 Most diseases are reversible 00:39 because most diseases are lifestyle diseases, 00:42 especially type 2 diabetes and chronic obesity. 00:46 Seriously now, they can be reversed 00:48 and the quality of your life can be renewed. 00:52 Call NEWSTART Today at 1-800-525-9192. 00:58 You will see dramatic changes 00:59 in the first few days of our program, 01:01 and you'll be on the road to a better, 01:03 more robust quality of life. 01:06 The NEWSTART programs are simple and effective. 01:12 Hi, friends, and welcome to another edition 01:15 of NEWSTART Now. 01:16 I'm your host Ron Giannoni. 01:19 In our studio with me is Helen Grey 01:22 all the way from Tennessee. 01:25 What's unusual about Helen 01:27 is her daughter works here at the NEWSTART program 01:32 and works with me, 01:33 and we had the pleasure of her presence. 01:37 So let's take a look at when she first arrived. 01:42 And I've got diabetes 01:43 and have had it close to 20 years and I just... 01:45 My first thought was I want to 01:48 get my blood sugar down to normal. 01:50 And then I would be getting off the medication. 01:53 And to get my weight back down, get under 200 01:56 which I haven't been for many years 01:58 under 200 pounds, and make my feet... 02:03 My feet will feel better I'm sure when that happens. 02:06 And, you know, 02:10 I'd like the Lord to help me 02:12 to know what to do with my future 02:13 now that I'm a widow and my future is uncertain. 02:18 Welcome back, friends. 02:19 And in our studio, Helen, how are you? 02:21 Hi, just fine. 02:22 It's good to see you. 02:24 Although I see a lot of you anyway 02:26 'cause your daughter and I work together. 02:28 Right. Yeah. 02:29 Yeah, Beth, and she does an incredible job. 02:32 Everybody seems to like her. 02:33 Oh, yeah, she is very well liked 02:35 and very well loved. 02:37 Tell me, Helen, you know, 02:39 we know that you've been here before. 02:42 Many years ago, in fact, 02:44 you're one of my first interviews. 02:47 Right. Yeah. Yeah. 02:49 Are things any different than they were then? 02:53 Well, there's been a lot of changes in my life 02:55 since then, my husband died after that. 02:57 And so I sort of gained 15 of those 35 pounds back. 03:03 And my blood sugar went way up again, 03:07 so that's why I'm here 03:09 is because I wanted to get back on track again. 03:12 And how is your blood sugar now? 03:14 Well, it dropped quite a bit from three weeks ago 03:18 when they took the test and then to now down to 150, 03:24 it was like 220 before. 03:27 You are on medication? 03:28 Yes, now I'm off the medication. 03:30 And you're off medication and it's even gotten better. 03:32 Right. Yeah. 03:33 And how about your weight, 03:35 you said you want to lose weight? 03:36 Yeah, when I started here in... 03:40 When I first did the check, it was 209 03:44 and I was hopping to get under 200, 03:45 but I only made it to 201. 03:47 Well, that's good. That's a start. 03:49 But it's a start. 03:51 My goal was to get under 200, 03:53 but I knew it might not be happening right now 03:55 but it will happen. 03:56 Well, you're going to be stay in on campus 03:59 with Beth for a while. 04:00 Right. I'm going to stay with Beth for a while. 04:02 Good. And we'll be monitoring you. 04:03 Right. Yeah, I'm sure. 04:07 How is the walking? Are you able to walk okay? 04:09 Yeah, yeah, I've got some new shoes 04:10 just before it started 04:12 and I've got that all taken care off and... 04:13 You know, Beth and I talked about those shoes. 04:15 Right. 04:16 When I first saw you walking in sandals, 04:18 I said to Beth, 04:19 "She can't be walking in sandals." 04:21 Oh, yeah. Well, yeah. 04:23 So yeah, I've got the new shoes now. 04:24 Did you? Yeah. 04:26 And I've been walking every day 04:27 between five and eight miles a day. 04:31 Five and eight miles a day? 04:33 Right. Yeah. 04:34 Oh, you're the new hero. 04:36 But I'm not walking as fast as I should 04:37 'cause, you know, different times, 04:39 like when you're fasting 04:40 you don't have much strength or energy 04:41 and, you know, stuff like that. 04:43 Speed has nothing to do with that. 04:44 But I've been out there. 04:46 Yeah, that's awesome. 04:47 I have my next door neighbor in the lawn, 04:51 we're walking pals, 04:53 so we walk together in the morning 04:55 and then other people walk with me 04:56 during different times of the day. 04:58 So you've made new friends here. 04:59 Yes. Yeah. 05:01 Yeah, isn't it amazing how we... 05:02 Yeah, been a lot of fun with everybody 05:05 and seeing how they're all doing 05:06 and how they react to things and... 05:09 You know, it's been really nice. 05:11 Let me make a mention of something. 05:13 You know, oftentimes, 05:15 we had a lady here once who lost four dress sizes, 05:19 did not lose a pound. 05:21 Oh, yeah. 05:23 We had another lady here that... 05:27 Well, we had several thousands of ladies here, you know. 05:30 But, you know, 05:32 the muscle starts to accumulate 05:35 as the fat is peeled off and you don't lose... 05:40 You're losing fat, but you're gaining muscle, 05:43 you're aware of that? 05:44 Right. 05:46 I can tell by the way the clothes have changed 05:47 and with the comments from people. 05:49 But today, the spa lady told me that 05:53 I had lost four inches around the waist. 05:55 Wow! Good job. Yeah. 05:58 And I can tell... 05:59 I tell people that 06:01 before sort of trying to give a waist and... 06:06 but it was hanging over, 06:08 but now it's not hanging over anymore. 06:11 So I'm pleased with that. 06:14 That's pretty descriptive. 06:15 Thanks, we don't have any more hanging over. 06:18 Right. 06:19 So that's improved I can tell. 06:21 I can just tell by the way the body feels 06:22 that it's changing. 06:25 Yeah, yeah. 06:27 I really have to commend you for walking that much. 06:30 When I came here, 06:31 I couldn't even walk a half mile. 06:33 And I was able to walk five, six, eight miles a day. 06:36 Yeah, well, my daughters in Tennessee 06:38 were after me to walk. 06:39 And I went to the aqua aerobics while I was back there. 06:42 And your daughter here is making you walk. 06:44 Yeah, I and my daughter here, we'll get up... 06:46 I walk her to work in the morning. 06:48 And then after she goes to work, 06:49 then I'll keep walking around... 06:50 Ain't that awesome? 06:52 before I started this. Yeah. 06:53 Now what's your favorite part of the program here? 06:57 Oh, boy, I like them all. 07:01 I like the interaction with other people, 07:05 I like the doctor, 07:07 he's really, really good and fun and... 07:10 Dr. K. Dr. K. And then... 07:12 But you have a favorite part of this program? 07:15 Well, actually the... 07:17 Is it the eating? Fresh Start... 07:18 Oh, yeah, just about. 07:19 Fresh Start, the chaplain in the morning, he's fantastic. 07:23 Yeah, he's a wonderful person. 07:25 Yeah, really connects everything 07:27 and the reason, you know... 07:29 'Cause that isn't the only reason 07:30 when the physical part... 07:32 when I said came and also was for the spiritual part. 07:34 Yes. 07:36 And he really helps out. 07:37 That's really good. Of course, I love the eating. 07:39 Yes. 07:41 I do too. 07:43 And the cooking classes. 07:44 I haven't missed too many meals in my life, 07:47 that's probably why I weighed 290 pounds at some point. 07:50 Yeah. At one point, I weighed 260. 07:53 Really? Probably about 20 years ago. 07:56 Wow! You're doing good. 07:57 Then I went down to 240 07:59 and I stayed there for a long time 08:00 and then when I was here four years ago it was... 08:02 I got down to the... 08:06 I lost down to just about 200, I was just about 200, 08:09 then the program was over and I went home, 08:12 my husband died, 08:14 and so I started going back up, so... 08:16 Yeah. 08:17 And now I want it to go back down. 08:19 'Cause if I'm going to live a while, 08:21 I want to have a healthy life and a happy life, 08:23 I don't want to be miserable. 08:25 Now are you satisfied with your results? 08:29 Yeah, I would like. 08:30 You know, you always wish to get a little bit better. 08:33 You know, I'd like to see the blood sugar down, 08:35 I'd like to see the weight down, 08:36 but I think it will get better. 08:38 They'll come down together. 08:39 And of course, your blood sugar, 08:41 you were at 300 on medication, now you're 150 without it. 08:46 It's going in the right direction, 08:48 you know that. 08:49 Yeah, right. It is. 08:50 So being with your daughter though, 08:52 she tells me you like to eat off campus now and then. 08:55 Oh, yes, that was my problem in Tennessee. 08:59 I would go out four, five times a week. 09:01 And now you can't. 09:03 So she keeps me at home. 09:07 That's good. But we come to the cafe... 09:09 We rarely get breakfast at her house 09:11 and then it comes... 09:12 As long as you know 09:13 what foods you should be eating 09:16 and what foods add on the poundage, 09:19 you'll be fine. 09:20 And being with Beth, you're going to be okay. 09:23 Yeah. She is very good, yeah. 09:24 She made a determination, I think, 09:25 when she was a teenager 09:27 that she wasn't going to gain weight 09:28 like her mom and her grandma, 09:30 so she made that determination very early. 09:33 She had mentioned that to me by the way. 09:36 So overall, any comments about the entire program 09:43 that you can share with our guests 09:45 that are watching? 09:47 Well, I recommend it for anybody 09:48 that has health problems. 09:51 And in fact, I wish my aunt could take advantage, 09:56 but she's too far, 09:58 her problems are too far gone, so she can't, 10:00 she is in the hospital now, but... 10:03 Yeah, I'd recommend it to anybody that would listen. 10:06 Okay. 10:08 Well, Helen, I really want to thank you for taking your time. 10:11 I know you're on a busy schedule. 10:14 Well, thank you for taking the time for me. 10:16 And God bless you. 10:17 Thank you. 10:18 And you're one of the ones 10:20 that was instrumental in me coming, 10:21 I appreciate that. 10:22 Yeah, you're more than welcome. 10:24 Thank you. We'll be in touch. 10:25 All right, yeah, plan on that. 10:27 Friends, don't go away 10:29 'cause Dr. K will be right with us. 10:34 When we look at the health status 10:36 of Americans today, 10:37 it's alarming to see that 60% are either overweight or obese. 10:47 In addition, diseases such as type 2 diabetes, cancer, 10:50 and heart disorders are the leading cause 10:52 of so many complications and deaths every year. 11:00 Could it have something to do with what we eat? 11:02 After all, every one in four Americans 11:05 visits a fast food restaurant daily, 11:07 and with such easy access to quick-fix foods, 11:11 we tend to forget the poor health value 11:13 those foods actually offer. 11:15 Maybe it's the sedentary lifestyle 11:17 and lack of exercise 11:19 that we've become so accustomed to 11:20 as a media-dependant world. 11:23 Whatever the cause of these diseases, 11:25 a solution has arrived. 11:29 The NEWSTART Lifestyle Center offers an enriching program 11:32 where patients can get a healing of mind, 11:35 body, and soul. 11:36 Located in the outskirts of Sacramento, 11:39 the NEWSTART Center is situated 11:41 on the beautiful campus 11:42 of Weimar Center of Health and Education 11:45 with scenic walking and hiking trails all around. 11:48 With a "whole plant foods eaten whole" motto, 11:52 the NEWSTART Center promotes a healthy plant-based diet 11:55 with an emphasis on natural foods. 11:57 The NEWSTART staff are made up of 11:59 California Board Certified nurses, 12:02 doctors, dietitians, 12:04 and therapists who work together 12:06 to assist each patient personally. 12:08 The staff are dedicated 12:10 to each patient's success in the program 12:12 and are always there to guide, advise, and encourage. 12:16 In addition to a healthy lifestyle, 12:18 NEWSTART also promotes a healthy exercise routine. 12:21 You're both in sequence, that's good, all right. 12:24 As part of the balance program, 12:26 there is much opportunity 12:27 to get in the fair share of physical activity 12:30 from utilizing our fitness center 12:32 to taking a stroll 12:33 around the peaceful grounds of Weimar. 12:35 It's amazing what a new start can do for you. 12:39 Welcome back, friends. In our studio, Dr. Kuninobu 12:43 Yes, welcome. 12:45 Right, it's the first time I've been here. 12:46 I know. 12:48 I'm going to tell our guests that you're brand new. 12:50 Not that you're brand new, but to NEWSTART, 12:53 you've joined the staff recently 12:56 about a month or so, you know. 12:58 Praise God. Yes. 12:59 And now you're seeing our guests 13:01 and they refer to you as Dr. K 13:03 because they can't pronounce your last name. 13:05 Yes, Kuninobu is a mouthful. 13:06 Yes, I thought Giannoni was 13:09 but then I think you got me there. 13:12 Nonetheless it's a pleasure to have you here, doctor. 13:15 Oh, thank you. Pleasure is mine. 13:17 Well, you know, we've heard a lot about you, 13:22 and I hope most of it is true. 13:23 I hope most of it is good. 13:26 It was all good. Okay. 13:27 No, I was just kind of rising you a little bit, 13:29 but let's talk about Helen. 13:31 Yes. 13:33 And as you know, Helen's daughter works here 13:35 she works with me in guest services, 13:38 and her name is Beth by the way. 13:41 I think you already knew that. 13:43 But we've been wanting Helen 13:45 to come back through the program 13:48 because she attended the program 13:50 many, many years ago. 13:51 I guess 10 years ago or 9, but she put on all this weight. 13:57 Talk to us about that. 13:58 Sure. You know, that's so common. 14:00 You raise a family, things are going on in life 14:03 and a lot of things happen as we raise kids, 14:05 as you're well aware. 14:07 Some of them good, some of them not so good. 14:09 And like a lot of people, 14:12 it's just a few pounds every year 14:14 and before you know it, 14:15 you realize that you're in a really unhealthy weight. 14:19 And that's the situation that Helen found herself in. 14:22 Yeah. 14:23 You know, and she already had a disease 14:25 that doesn't do well with weight. 14:27 And that is? Diabetes. 14:28 The diabetes of course. 14:31 You know, you made it sound so simple. 14:33 Let me just tell you what you just said. 14:35 Sure. 14:36 You put on a couple of pounds a year in 30 years, 14:39 how many pounds is that? 14:41 Yeah, you're 60 pounds every year. 14:42 That's a lot of weight. 14:44 It is a lot of weight. And it happens to all of us. 14:45 I know. 14:47 And, you know, you don't think even 14:48 shouldn't happen to a doctor, 14:50 especially one who has a background in prevention 14:53 and in family medicine like myself, 14:56 but I put on weight 14:58 like the stress of going to work 14:59 every day and the business. 15:00 I know of a good program you can attend. 15:02 Oh, by the way, all kidding aside, 15:04 when Doctor Gallant got here, he was a little heavier, 15:08 but he's a leaned right out. 15:10 Yes, he has. 15:11 And I'm going to see the same with you. 15:12 I'm working to beat him. 15:14 Are you? Oh, yes, absolutely. 15:16 I'm already down 27, 28 pounds from my high. 15:19 Wow! 15:20 And I think he had to lose 30, 15:22 so I'm going to beat him no matter what. 15:25 So what about Helen's diabetes. 15:27 Is she doing okay with that? 15:29 You know, it's interesting 15:30 because at the beginning of the program, 15:33 you would say, "No, she was not doing well at all." 15:35 Because she had the high 300. 15:37 She was running high on the 300 range. 15:39 She actually had been already working on it 15:42 'cause she, as you said, had been here before, 15:45 she knew about the principles of NEWSTART, 15:48 she was eating at the cafeteria, 15:50 she was eating the right food, she was exercising, 15:53 walking around the hills here at Weimar, 15:54 and you would think, 15:55 "Well, what would the program have to offer somebody 15:58 who already knows it and who's already here?" 16:01 You know, it's interesting that 16:03 it can be just little things that make the difference. 16:06 And I think the structure of the program 16:08 really was something that really benefited Helen 16:11 and also the camaraderie of the other patients. 16:13 Oh, absolutely. 16:15 You know, where mind, body, spirit... 16:18 You know, the mind 16:19 is such an incredible influence on the body, 16:23 and that group dynamic 16:27 I think was very helpful for Helen. 16:28 Oh, boy. 16:30 And she was able to increase her mileage 16:31 and she just continued pushing through 16:32 even when she was having difficulty. 16:34 And I think she may have mentioned to you 16:36 at the beginning, 16:37 the first week or two she was just wondering, 16:39 "Is anything happening? 16:40 My blood sugars are still running high." 16:43 She would come in and talk about that. 16:45 And I said, "Helen, you have to be patient." 16:48 You know, and he would use these phrases, 16:49 "Rome wasn't built in a day" or whatever, you know, 16:52 "It took 20 years to get where you are, Helen, 16:54 let's give it some time. 16:55 Let's see how things go." 16:57 She persevered through it. 16:59 And at first, she would look at the numbers of her weight 17:01 and be very concerned 17:03 'cause maybe she wouldn't lose as much as she wanted to. 17:06 And I would have to point out and say, 17:07 "Well, Helen, remember that as you're exercising more, 17:10 you're actually putting on some muscle 17:12 and remember that muscle weighs more than fat." 17:14 So I asked the question, "By any chance, 17:16 has your waist come down 17:19 or the clothes are little looser?" 17:21 You know, we would joke about it. 17:22 She said, "Actually, yeah, 17:23 I was afraid I was going to lose them today 17:25 when I was walking," which was a good thing. 17:28 Even though the scale didn't change 17:30 as much as she wanted it to, 17:31 her body composition was improving. 17:33 That scale can be deceiving. 17:35 It can be deceiving. 17:37 You know, Dr. Lukens 17:39 talks about this once in a while, 17:41 we had a guest come here about four years ago, five years ago, 17:45 she lost four dress sizes but did not lose a pound. 17:48 I've heard that story. Incredible. 17:50 Yeah, it is incredible. 17:52 And so, you know, if you're out there losing weight 17:56 or you're losing sizes 17:58 but your weight isn't going down, 18:00 your body composition is changing, that's for sure. 18:03 And it's a good thing. 18:05 Hang in there... Hang in there. 18:06 because it's going to happen. 18:07 And it happened for Helen. 18:09 And this morning what was her blood glucose? 18:11 Her blood sugar was 129 this morning. 18:13 Isn't that amazing? Just beautiful. 18:15 She was so happy. 18:16 Oh, yeah, she is a believer. 18:18 Absolutely. 18:19 Otherwise what would have happened to this poor lady? 18:22 You know, if she had continued on the road 18:23 that she was on with blood sugars, 18:26 and I think it was despite medication too 18:28 that she was running these high numbers, 18:31 just an incredible increased risk for heart attack 18:34 and for stroke. 18:36 Those are the two biggies 18:38 but of course things that we talk about 18:39 on this program all the time. 18:41 Yes. 18:42 You know, cancer, kidney failure, 18:44 neurological problems, amputations, etcetera 18:47 which I saw in my practice, 18:48 unfortunately, very regularly in Southern California 18:50 before I came here. 18:52 Now you did practice in Southern California 18:55 at South of Loma Linda and... 18:57 Actually in the San Diego area, North San Diego county area. 18:59 Oh, you did? Mm-hm. 19:00 For 20 years. Twenty years. 19:03 Family practice. Family practice. 19:05 Okay. 19:07 We're so glad you're here. 19:08 I am so happy to be here too. Yeah. 19:10 Yeah, it's wonderful to see how God works. 19:12 Yeah, just amazing the miracles that we see here. 19:16 Absolutely. 19:17 And we're seeing a miracle, you know... 19:20 I use that term kind of lightly 19:22 but truly we see them every single session. 19:27 All these people we see, they come in like this, 19:31 and they leave like this, happy, and... 19:35 I'm so happy to be a part of that. 19:37 Praise God. So am I. 19:39 Doctor, can you say any more about the weight loss 19:44 and diabetes as it relates to our guests who are watching? 19:49 Yeah, you know, if there are guests that are watching 19:50 that are struggling with their weight, 19:54 first thing is that the world is going to tell you, 19:56 "Well, why don't you go on the Paleo diet? 20:00 You know, start eating that, you know, 20:02 just a lot of protein 20:04 and forget those carbohydrates." 20:07 And some people eat, they will lose weight that way, 20:12 but the question is what are they doing 20:13 with the other parameters 20:15 when you forget about the other parts, 20:16 your cholesterol, 20:18 what's the long-term going to be. 20:19 So, you know, here at NEWSTART, 20:23 through the years, you've seen it, I've seen it 20:27 in just the short time I've been here, 20:28 that when you do a balanced, whole food, 20:31 plant-based diet, and exercise, and drink water, 20:35 just those big three right there, 20:38 you're going to lose weight. 20:40 And one of the other things that we do here is 20:42 we actually have the two meals a day also. 20:45 Yes. 20:47 That you spread it out, 20:49 let your body digest that food properly 20:51 and give the gut rest from time to time. 20:54 That makes a difference too. 20:55 Thanks for sharing that. 20:57 And thank you, doctor, for coming on the program. 20:58 My pleasure. 21:00 We've run out of time here. 21:02 But I want to thank you again, 21:03 and we'll be seeing you here on campus. 21:05 Absolutely. 21:07 And thank you, friends, for joining us, 21:09 but don't go away, we have a tip for you. 21:15 Kids love juice. 21:17 We love juice. 21:19 It seems like a healthy alternative to soda, 21:22 but is it really that much healthier? 21:25 Much information is coming from medical experts 21:28 and the juice industry as well, but they're in conflict. 21:32 The labels on juice say 100% juice, 21:36 or it may say all natural, or good source of vitamins, 21:40 but the one that really gets our attention is 21:43 no sugar added. 21:46 The common belief is that 21:47 fruit juices are healthy choice, 21:50 but there is compelling evidence 21:52 that drinking juice 21:54 may have serious negative effects. 21:58 The Juice Products Association, 22:00 a group that lobbies for the industry, 22:03 has a website www.FruitJuiceFacts.org, 22:07 and it is designed to give the facts about fruit juice. 22:11 On the site, they share information 22:12 on the benefits of drinking juice, 22:15 claiming that a 100% juice 22:17 can aid an overall better nutrition 22:19 by increasing the intake of fruit servings, 22:22 vitamins, and minerals. 22:25 Sounds good, right? 22:27 A lot of parents get confused 22:29 about whether juices or soft drinks, 22:31 you know, what do I do? 22:33 Do I substitute real fruit juice 22:35 for soft drinks, 22:36 that must be better for my child? 22:38 In reality what you're doing is taking a comparably 22:42 calorically dense beverage... 22:44 And yes, orange juice has some vitamin C in it 22:47 and if your kids could stand tomato juice, 22:49 that would be great to have instead. 22:51 But really what the issue is they're very calorically dense 22:54 along with soft drinks 22:56 and other sugar sweetened beverages, 22:57 so parents need to be aware of the calories 23:00 and the quantity of calories 23:02 that your child may be consuming 23:04 from sweetened beverages, whether they're natural sugars 23:07 or from something like soft drink 23:09 or sweetened fruit drinks. 23:11 Just because the label says no sugar added 23:15 doesn't mean juice doesn't contain sugar. 23:19 Most natural fruit juices have just as much sugar as soda. 23:24 When compared with the same volume of coke, 23:27 apple juice, 23:28 even a 100% apple juice with no sugar added, 23:31 has more calories 23:33 and about the same amount of sugar, 23:36 a whopping 10 teaspoons. 23:39 A 20-ounce Gatorade 23:41 contains 34 grams of sugar or 11 teaspoons. 23:46 A 12-ounce glass of orange juice 23:48 contains a 180 calories and 8 teaspoons of sugar, 23:54 which is the same as eating 23:56 3 chocolate chip cookies or half a cup of ice cream. 24:01 But isn't there a difference 24:02 between natural sugars and refined sugars? 24:06 In other words, 24:08 could the natural sugars found in fruit juice 24:11 be somehow less harmful 24:14 than the sugars found in soft drinks? 24:17 When a person, be it a child or an adult, 24:20 drinks soft drink 24:22 which is sweetened with either sucrose 24:24 or high-fructose corn syrup 24:26 or they drink a fruit juice 24:28 which the sugar is essentially the same, 24:30 the body doesn't know where it came from, 24:33 and it's going to metabolize it literally the same way, 24:36 identically. 24:38 Drinks altogether, soft drinks, sweetened fruit drinks, 24:42 and fruit juices are all actually, 24:45 the USDA throws them all in a mix. 24:47 Among those in the medical field, 24:50 the general consensus is that there is a link between 24:53 drinking sugar-sweetened beverages, 24:56 including fruit juices, and obesity. 25:00 The reason is when a person consumes the fruit juice 25:02 rather than consuming the whole fruits, 25:04 they discard the fiber 25:06 that would limit their quantity of the fruits 25:07 that they're taking in 25:09 and get a high concentration of sugar, that's calories, 25:12 the body has to compensate for that rise in blood sugar 25:14 by secreting more insulin 25:16 and thus the storage of fat is increased. 25:19 If they're over consuming calories, 25:21 the possibility is there 25:23 and it does happen that that sugar in the fruit juice, 25:26 the real fruit juice or the sugar in the soft drink 25:28 can be converted into body fat 25:30 and can contribute both of them, 25:33 both beverages to obesity in children. 25:35 So what were humans meant to drink? 25:38 The answer is simple, water. 25:41 Water is refreshing, cleansing, and healing. 25:43 It acts like a mop that cleans our bodies of waste 25:46 and carries nutrients to the different organs. 25:49 It cools the body and helps digest our food. 25:52 Do you know that drinking plenty of water 25:54 makes you look younger by keeping your skin healthy? 25:58 Drinking water can even help you lose weight 26:01 because drinking lots of water 26:03 naturally suppresses the appetite. 26:06 Plus, it has zero calories and zero grams of sugar. 26:12 To improve our health and the health of our kids, 26:15 we need to think outside the juice box. 26:18 First, let's reduce or eliminate 26:21 even our fruit juice intake. 26:23 Second, we need to drink lots of water. 26:26 Put a fresh slice of lemon, or lime, 26:28 or orange in the water to flavor it, it's really good. 26:31 And also, let's eat lots of fresh fruit. 26:34 Instead of drinking fruit juices, 26:37 we can take that fruit, 26:38 cut it up for the kids ahead of time, 26:40 and put it in snack packs for them 26:42 so that it's easy to grab. 26:44 Reducing or eliminating fruit juice from our diet 26:47 may be hard to do at first, 26:50 but think of the benefits, 26:51 reducing juice from our diet will result in less calories, 26:55 a lower risk of diabetes, and overall better health. 27:31 Well, friends, that's it for today, 27:33 but join us next week for another episode. 27:36 In the meantime, pick up the phone 27:38 and give us a call at 800-525-9192. 27:44 Mention the NEWSTART Now program 27:47 and receive the NEWSTART special. |
