She is very good, yeah. 00:09:23.19\00:09:24.53 She made a determination, I think, 00:09:24.56\00:09:25.93 when she was a teenager 00:09:25.96\00:09:27.30 that she wasn't going to gain weight 00:09:27.33\00:09:28.66 like her mom and her grandma, 00:09:28.70\00:09:30.53 so she made that determination very early. 00:09:30.57\00:09:32.97 She had mentioned that to me by the way. 00:09:33.00\00:09:36.27 So overall, any comments about the entire program 00:09:36.30\00:09:43.14 that you can share with our guests 00:09:43.18\00:09:45.31 that are watching? 00:09:45.35\00:09:47.15 Well, I recommend it for anybody 00:09:47.18\00:09:48.75 that has health problems. 00:09:48.78\00:09:51.15 And in fact, I wish my aunt could take advantage, 00:09:51.19\00:09:56.83 but she's too far, 00:09:56.86\00:09:58.63 her problems are too far gone, so she can't, 00:09:58.66\00:10:00.80 she is in the hospital now, but... 00:10:00.83\00:10:03.23 Yeah, I'd recommend it to anybody that would listen. 00:10:03.26\00:10:06.74 Okay. 00:10:06.77\00:10:08.37 Well, Helen, I really want to thank you for taking your time. 00:10:08.40\00:10:11.77 I know you're on a busy schedule. 00:10:11.81\00:10:14.08 Well, thank you for taking the time for me. 00:10:14.11\00:10:16.08 And God bless you. 00:10:16.11\00:10:17.45 Thank you. 00:10:17.48\00:10:18.81 And you're one of the ones 00:10:18.85\00:10:20.18 that was instrumental in me coming, 00:10:20.22\00:10:21.55 I appreciate that. 00:10:21.58\00:10:22.92 Yeah, you're more than welcome. 00:10:22.95\00:10:24.29 Thank you. Incredible. 00:17:48.96\00:17:50.83 Yeah, it is incredible. 00:17:50.87\00:17:52.33 And so, you know, if you're out there losing weight 00:17:52.37\00:17:56.54 or you're losing sizes 00:17:56.57\00:17:58.71 but your weight isn't going down, 00:17:58.74\00:18:00.84 your body composition is changing, that's for sure. 00:18:00.88\00:18:03.65 And it's a good thing. 00:18:03.68\00:18:05.01 Hang in there... Hang in there. 00:18:05.05\00:18:06.38 because it's going to happen. 00:18:06.41\00:18:07.75 And it happened for Helen. 00:18:07.78\00:18:09.12 And this morning what was her blood glucose? 00:18:09.15\00:18:11.39 Her blood sugar was 129 this morning. 00:18:11.42\00:18:13.52 Isn't that amazing? Just beautiful. 00:18:13.56\00:18:15.22 She was so happy. 00:18:15.26\00:18:16.59 Oh, yeah, she is a believer. 00:18:16.62\00:18:18.39 Absolutely. 00:18:18.43\00:18:19.76 Otherwise what would have happened to this poor lady? 00:18:19.79\00:18:22.16 You know, if she had continued on the road 00:18:22.20\00:18:23.93 that she was on with blood sugars, 00:18:23.97\00:18:26.74 and I think it was despite medication too 00:18:26.77\00:18:28.67 that she was running these high numbers, 00:18:28.70\00:18:31.91 just an incredible increased risk for heart attack 00:18:31.94\00:18:34.94 and for stroke. 00:18:34.98\00:18:36.71 Those are the two biggies 00:18:36.75\00:18:38.08 but of course things that we talk about 00:18:38.11\00:18:39.78 on this program all the time. 00:18:39.81\00:18:41.15 Yes. 00:18:41.18\00:18:42.52 You know, cancer, kidney failure, 00:18:42.55\00:18:44.32 neurological problems, amputations, etcetera 00:18:44.35\00:18:47.06 which I saw in my practice, 00:18:47.09\00:18:48.62 unfortunately, very regularly in Southern California 00:18:48.66\00:18:50.93 before I came here. 00:18:50.96\00:18:52.36 Now you did practice in Southern California 00:18:52.39\00:18:55.46 at South of Loma Linda and... 00:18:55.50\00:18:57.03 Actually in the San Diego area, North San Diego county area. 00:18:57.07\00:18:59.20 Oh, you did? Mm-hm. 00:18:59.23\00:19:00.64 For 20 years. Twenty years. 00:19:00.67\00:19:03.67 Family practice. Family practice. 00:19:03.71\00:19:05.61 Okay. 00:19:05.64\00:19:06.98 We're so glad you're here. 00:19:07.01\00:19:08.54 I am so happy to be here too. Yeah. 00:19:08.58\00:19:10.45 Yeah, it's wonderful to see how God works. 00:19:10.48\00:19:12.51 Yeah, just amazing the miracles that we see here. 00:19:12.55\00:19:16.02 Absolutely. 00:19:16.05\00:19:17.39 And we're seeing a miracle, you know... 00:19:17.42\00:19:20.42 I use that term kind of lightly 00:19:20.46\00:19:22.39 but truly we see them every single session. 00:19:22.42\00:19:27.70 All these people we see, they come in like this, 00:19:27.73\00:19:31.93 and they leave like this, happy, and... 00:19:31.97\00:19:35.00 I'm so happy to be a part of that. 00:19:35.04\00:19:37.77 Praise God. So am I. 00:19:37.81\00:19:39.34 Doctor, can you say any more about the weight loss 00:19:39.37\00:19:44.75 and diabetes as it relates to our guests who are watching? 00:19:44.78\00:19:49.15 Yeah, you know, if there are guests that are watching 00:19:49.18\00:19:50.72 that are struggling with their weight, 00:19:50.75\00:19:54.36 first thing is that the world is going to tell you, 00:19:54.39\00:19:56.46 "Well, why don't you go on the Paleo diet? 00:19:56.49\00:20:00.06 You know, start eating that, you know, 00:20:00.10\00:20:02.70 just a lot of protein 00:20:02.73\00:20:04.77 and forget those carbohydrates." 00:20:04.80\00:20:07.17 And some people eat, they will lose weight that way, 00:20:07.20\00:20:12.47 but the question is what are they doing 00:20:12.51\00:20:13.84 with the other parameters 00:20:13.88\00:20:15.21 when you forget about the other parts, 00:20:15.24\00:20:16.88 your cholesterol, 00:20:16.91\00:20:18.25 what's the long-term going to be. 00:20:18.28\00:20:19.95 So, you know, here at NEWSTART, 00:20:19.98\00:20:23.49 through the years, you've seen it, I've seen it 00:20:23.52\00:20:27.02 in just the short time I've been here, 00:20:27.06\00:20:28.92 that when you do a balanced, whole food, 00:20:28.96\00:20:31.66 plant-based diet, and exercise, and drink water, 00:20:31.69\00:20:35.66 just those big three right there, 00:20:35.70\00:20:38.07 you're going to lose weight. 00:20:38.10\00:20:40.27 And one of the other things that we do here is 00:20:40.30\00:20:42.14 we actually have the two meals a day also. 00:20:42.17\00:20:45.74 Yes. 00:20:45.77\00:20:47.11 That you spread it out, 00:20:47.14\00:20:49.01 let your body digest that food properly 00:20:49.04\00:20:51.75 and give the gut rest from time to time. 00:20:51.78\00:20:54.45 That makes a difference too. 00:20:54.48\00:20:55.92 Thanks for sharing that. 00:20:55.95\00:20:57.55 And thank you, doctor, for coming on the program. 00:20:57.59\00:20:58.95 My pleasure. 00:20:58.99\00:21:00.32 We've run out of time here. 00:21:00.36\00:21:02.16 But I want to thank you again, 00:21:02.19\00:21:03.53 and we'll be seeing you here on campus. 00:21:03.56\00:21:05.89 Absolutely. 00:21:05.93\00:21:07.26 And thank you, friends, for joining us, 00:21:07.30\00:21:09.13 but don't go away, we have a tip for you. 00:21:09.16\00:21:11.13 Kids love juice. 00:21:15.80\00:21:17.87 We love juice. 00:21:17.91\00:21:19.74 It seems like a healthy alternative to soda, 00:21:19.77\00:21:22.61 but is it really that much healthier? 00:21:22.64\00:21:25.95 Much information is coming from medical experts 00:21:25.98\00:21:28.38 and the juice industry as well, but they're in conflict. 00:21:28.42\00:21:32.45 The labels on juice say 100% juice, 00:21:32.49\00:21:35.99 or it may say all natural, or good source of vitamins, 00:21:36.02\00:21:40.23 but the one that really gets our attention is 00:21:40.26\00:21:43.13 no sugar added. 00:21:43.16\00:21:45.97 The common belief is that 00:21:46.00\00:21:47.70 fruit juices are healthy choice, 00:21:47.74\00:21:50.27 but there is compelling evidence 00:21:50.31\00:21:52.54 that drinking juice 00:21:52.57\00:21:54.34 may have serious negative effects. 00:21:54.38\00:21:58.01 The Juice Products Association, 00:21:58.05\00:22:00.02 a group that lobbies for the industry, 00:22:00.05\00:22:03.02 has a website www.FruitJuiceFacts.org, 00:22:03.05\00:22:07.16 and it is designed to give the facts about fruit juice. 00:22:07.19\00:22:11.16 On the site, they share information 00:22:11.19\00:22:12.86 on the benefits of drinking juice, 00:22:12.89\00:22:15.30 claiming that a 100% juice 00:22:15.33\00:22:17.23 can aid an overall better nutrition 00:22:17.27\00:22:19.73 by increasing the intake of fruit servings, 00:22:19.77\00:22:22.80 vitamins, and minerals. 00:22:22.84\00:22:25.57 Sounds good, right? 00:22:25.61\00:22:27.41 A lot of parents get confused 00:22:27.44\00:22:29.14 about whether juices or soft drinks, 00:22:29.18\00:22:31.75 you know, what do I do? 00:22:31.78\00:22:33.11 Do I substitute real fruit juice 00:22:33.15\00:22:35.38 for soft drinks, 00:22:35.42\00:22:36.75 that must be better for my child? 00:22:36.79\00:22:38.92 In reality what you're doing is taking a comparably 00:22:38.95\00:22:42.06 calorically dense beverage... 00:22:42.09\00:22:44.33 And yes, orange juice has some vitamin C in it 00:22:44.36\00:22:47.23 and if your kids could stand tomato juice, 00:22:47.26\00:22:49.60 that would be great to have instead. 00:22:49.63\00:22:51.70 But really what the issue is they're very calorically dense 00:22:51.73\00:22:54.77 along with soft drinks 00:22:54.80\00:22:56.14 and other sugar sweetened beverages, 00:22:56.17\00:22:57.51 so parents need to be aware of the calories 00:22:57.54\00:23:00.18 and the quantity of calories 00:23:00.21\00:23:01.98 that your child may be consuming 00:23:02.01\00:23:04.35 from sweetened beverages, whether they're natural sugars 00:23:04.38\00:23:07.62 or from something like soft drink 00:23:07.65\00:23:09.68 or sweetened fruit drinks. 00:23:09.72\00:23:11.79 Just because the label says no sugar added 00:23:11.82\00:23:15.82 doesn't mean juice doesn't contain sugar. 00:23:15.86\00:23:19.76 Most natural fruit juices have just as much sugar as soda. 00:23:19.79\00:23:24.23 When compared with the same volume of coke, 00:23:24.27\00:23:27.20 apple juice, 00:23:27.24\00:23:28.57 even a 100% apple juice with no sugar added, 00:23:28.60\00:23:31.84 has more calories 00:23:31.87\00:23:33.61 and about the same amount of sugar, 00:23:33.64\00:23:36.28 a whopping 10 teaspoons. 00:23:36.31\00:23:39.81 A 20-ounce Gatorade 00:23:39.85\00:23:41.52 contains 34 grams of sugar or 11 teaspoons. 00:23:41.55\00:23:46.22 A 12-ounce glass of orange juice 00:23:46.25\00:23:48.66 contains a 180 calories and 8 teaspoons of sugar, 00:23:48.69\00:23:54.76 which is the same as eating 00:23:54.80\00:23:56.23 3 chocolate chip cookies or half a cup of ice cream. 00:23:56.26\00:24:01.00 But isn't there a difference 00:24:01.04\00:24:02.50 between natural sugars and refined sugars? 00:24:02.54\00:24:06.91 In other words, 00:24:06.94\00:24:08.31 could the natural sugars found in fruit juice 00:24:08.34\00:24:11.71 be somehow less harmful 00:24:11.75\00:24:14.45 than the sugars found in soft drinks? 00:24:14.48\00:24:17.39 When a person, be it a child or an adult, 00:24:17.42\00:24:20.72 drinks soft drink 00:24:20.76\00:24:22.29 which is sweetened with either sucrose 00:24:22.32\00:24:24.46 or high-fructose corn syrup 00:24:24.49\00:24:26.09 or they drink a fruit juice 00:24:26.13\00:24:28.16 which the sugar is essentially the same, 00:24:28.20\00:24:30.77 the body doesn't know where it came from, 00:24:30.80\00:24:33.60 and it's going to metabolize it literally the same way, 00:24:33.64\00:24:36.74 identically. 00:24:36.77\00:24:38.11 Drinks altogether, soft drinks, sweetened fruit drinks, 00:24:38.14\00:24:42.58 and fruit juices are all actually, 00:24:42.61\00:24:45.21 the USDA throws them all in a mix. 00:24:45.25\00:24:47.85 Among those in the medical field, 00:24:47.88\00:24:50.35 the general consensus is that there is a link between 00:24:50.39\00:24:53.89 drinking sugar-sweetened beverages, 00:24:53.92\00:24:56.29 including fruit juices, and obesity. 00:24:56.32\00:25:00.23 The reason is when a person consumes the fruit juice 00:25:00.26\00:25:02.70 rather than consuming the whole fruits, 00:25:02.73\00:25:04.87 they discard the fiber 00:25:04.90\00:25:06.23 that would limit their quantity of the fruits 00:25:06.27\00:25:07.94 that they're taking in 00:25:07.97\00:25:09.30 and get a high concentration of sugar, that's calories, 00:25:09.34\00:25:12.41 the body has to compensate for that rise in blood sugar 00:25:12.44\00:25:14.94 by secreting more insulin 00:25:14.98\00:25:16.58 and thus the storage of fat is increased. 00:25:16.61\00:25:19.11 If they're over consuming calories, 00:25:19.15\00:25:21.55 the possibility is there 00:25:21.58\00:25:23.18 and it does happen that that sugar in the fruit juice, 00:25:23.22\00:25:26.02 the real fruit juice or the sugar in the soft drink 00:25:26.05\00:25:28.82 can be converted into body fat 00:25:28.86\00:25:30.76 and can contribute both of them, 00:25:30.79\00:25:33.13 both beverages to obesity in children. 00:25:33.16\00:25:35.43 So what were humans meant to drink? 00:25:35.46\00:25:38.20 The answer is simple, water. 00:25:38.23\00:25:41.17 Water is refreshing, cleansing, and healing. 00:25:41.20\00:25:43.84 It acts like a mop that cleans our bodies of waste 00:25:43.87\00:25:46.64 and carries nutrients to the different organs. 00:25:46.68\00:25:49.08 It cools the body and helps digest our food. 00:25:49.11\00:25:52.51 Do you know that drinking plenty of water 00:25:52.55\00:25:54.85 makes you look younger by keeping your skin healthy? 00:25:54.88\00:25:58.29 Drinking water can even help you lose weight 00:25:58.32\00:26:01.36 because drinking lots of water 00:26:01.39\00:26:03.49 naturally suppresses the appetite. 00:26:03.53\00:26:06.36 Plus, it has zero calories and zero grams of sugar. 00:26:06.39\00:26:12.33 To improve our health and the health of our kids, 00:26:12.37\00:26:15.07 we need to think outside the juice box. 00:26:15.10\00:26:18.07 First, let's reduce or eliminate 00:26:18.11\00:26:21.24 even our fruit juice intake. 00:26:21.28\00:26:23.45 Second, we need to drink lots of water. 00:26:23.48\00:26:26.01 Put a fresh slice of lemon, or lime, 00:26:26.05\00:26:28.15 or orange in the water to flavor it, it's really good. 00:26:28.18\00:26:31.75 And also, let's eat lots of fresh fruit. 00:26:31.79\00:26:34.66 Instead of drinking fruit juices, 00:26:34.69\00:26:37.09 we can take that fruit, 00:26:37.13\00:26:38.46 cut it up for the kids ahead of time, 00:26:38.49\00:26:40.60 and put it in snack packs for them 00:26:40.63\00:26:42.73 so that it's easy to grab. 00:26:42.76\00:26:44.60 Reducing or eliminating fruit juice from our diet 00:26:44.63\00:26:47.94 may be hard to do at first, 00:26:47.97\00:26:50.04 but think of the benefits, 00:26:50.07\00:26:51.74 reducing juice from our diet will result in less calories, 00:26:51.77\00:26:55.54 a lower risk of diabetes, and overall better health. 00:26:55.58\00:27:00.52 Well, friends, that's it for today, 00:27:31.95\00:27:33.68 but join us next week for another episode. 00:27:33.72\00:27:36.85 In the meantime, pick up the phone 00:27:36.89\00:27:38.55 and give us a call at 800-525-9192. 00:27:38.59\00:27:44.36 Mention the NEWSTART Now program 00:27:44.39\00:27:47.23 and receive the NEWSTART special. 00:27:47.26\00:27:49.70
