I'm fine, Ron. 00:03:06.08\00:03:08.55 That's good to see you. 00:03:08.58\00:03:10.25 You do look different. 00:03:10.29\00:03:11.82 Yeah, better than I was when I came here. 00:03:11.85\00:03:14.82 Yeah, I think so. Yeah. 00:03:14.86\00:03:17.79 You know, we discussed a stroke on our first interview. 00:03:17.83\00:03:23.33 How severe was that stroke and when did it exactly, 00:03:23.37\00:03:26.60 when did it happen? 00:03:26.63\00:03:27.97 It happened on May 6th, 2014 and it was pretty severe. 00:03:28.00\00:03:33.34 I was asleep in my truck, taken a break. 00:03:33.38\00:03:38.15 And the next morning 00:03:38.18\00:03:40.22 when I went to make my delivery, 00:03:40.25\00:03:41.58 I couldn't get out of bed. 00:03:41.62\00:03:43.52 I'd had a stroke during my sleep 00:03:43.55\00:03:45.22 and kind of paralyzed my left side. 00:03:45.25\00:03:49.52 The entire left side? 00:03:49.56\00:03:50.89 The entire left side, arm and leg. 00:03:50.93\00:03:53.06 And I couldn't get out of bed. 00:03:53.09\00:03:56.06 So, my company 00:03:56.10\00:04:01.50 track the truck down, 00:04:01.54\00:04:02.87 they knew where it was so they called the local police 00:04:02.90\00:04:05.17 to come and check on me. 00:04:05.21\00:04:06.81 And they, they are the one that got me out of the truck 00:04:06.84\00:04:09.58 and got me to the hospital. 00:04:09.61\00:04:11.81 But I had blood clot on my brain. 00:04:11.85\00:04:14.95 And I remember, 00:04:14.98\00:04:19.49 I could hear the doctors talking 00:04:19.52\00:04:21.56 when they were trying to dissolve them 00:04:21.59\00:04:23.69 or take them out or whatever they do, 00:04:23.73\00:04:26.29 but I didn't get to the hospital fast enough 00:04:26.33\00:04:30.73 to make a fast recovery. 00:04:30.77\00:04:34.87 Yes. 00:04:34.90\00:04:36.24 So, it's been a couple years now, 00:04:36.27\00:04:38.44 about two and a half. 00:04:38.47\00:04:39.81 Two and a half. 00:04:39.84\00:04:41.18 And you regained mobility with your left leg 00:04:41.21\00:04:45.71 but your left arm is still little bit... 00:04:45.75\00:04:48.58 Tell us about that? 00:04:48.62\00:04:49.95 Yeah, left arm is still not functioning. 00:04:49.98\00:04:54.12 But I've been working on it in the last few months 00:04:54.16\00:04:58.93 and at least I can move it and there is no pain. 00:04:58.96\00:05:03.83 So I think 00:05:03.87\00:05:05.20 if I just keep working with and exercising it, 00:05:05.23\00:05:07.57 I'll get some mobility back in it. 00:05:07.60\00:05:10.47 Yes. 00:05:10.51\00:05:11.84 We've had some students working with you. 00:05:11.87\00:05:14.28 One of our students from Guest services. 00:05:14.31\00:05:16.28 Correct. 00:05:16.31\00:05:17.65 And I have taught him a few techniques 00:05:17.68\00:05:19.68 to work on the tendons and such and help bring back mobility. 00:05:19.71\00:05:25.22 So I understand you are thinking about, 00:05:25.25\00:05:29.59 maybe staying for another session? 00:05:29.62\00:05:32.79 Yeah, because 00:05:32.83\00:05:36.00 the improvement that I see 00:05:36.03\00:05:41.30 has encouraged me to stay another session 00:05:41.34\00:05:44.67 because I think another session, 00:05:44.71\00:05:46.07 I'll get a lot better, get to walk in a lot better, 00:05:46.11\00:05:50.25 I'll get the arm moving a little bit better. 00:05:50.28\00:05:52.51 Yeah. 00:05:52.55\00:05:53.88 And get some weight down 00:05:53.92\00:05:56.35 and get all of my vitals 00:05:56.38\00:06:01.66 in better shape than they are now. 00:06:01.69\00:06:04.26 Now, vitals, you mean, 00:06:04.29\00:06:05.89 cholesterol and triglycerides, all that. 00:06:05.93\00:06:07.46 Correct. Correct. 00:06:07.50\00:06:08.83 Now, you lost about 11 pounds, the first 10 or 11 days. 00:06:08.86\00:06:14.40 But then you gained a couple of pounds. 00:06:14.44\00:06:16.17 Correct. 00:06:16.20\00:06:17.54 Could that gain maybe be muscle mass, 00:06:17.57\00:06:20.58 and tell me what do you think? 00:06:20.61\00:06:23.18 I guess. 00:06:23.21\00:06:24.75 I guess it could be 00:06:24.78\00:06:26.11 because I haven't been eating anything 00:06:26.15\00:06:27.52 to put the weight on. 00:06:27.55\00:06:30.12 Well, we don't starve people here, do we? 00:06:30.15\00:06:32.72 No, you don't starve people 00:06:32.75\00:06:34.09 but, I have a sweet tooth and when I am home, 00:06:34.12\00:06:39.49 I eat a lot of sweets which I haven't had here. 00:06:39.53\00:06:42.83 You can't do those sweets. 00:06:42.86\00:06:44.63 So, I know it wasn't the eating that put weight back on, 00:06:44.67\00:06:49.54 I don't really know what it was 00:06:49.57\00:06:51.87 but something put three pounds back on me. 00:06:51.91\00:06:55.78 Now, have you learned while you are here, 00:06:55.81\00:06:59.48 foods to eat and foods not to eat 00:06:59.51\00:07:03.49 that will help your situation? 00:07:03.52\00:07:06.69 Yeah, I've learned a lot about eating correctly 00:07:06.72\00:07:09.69 and the right foods 00:07:09.72\00:07:11.66 but it's going to be difficult for me 00:07:11.69\00:07:15.43 to get into the habit of eating like that regular. 00:07:15.46\00:07:21.30 Why would you say that? 00:07:21.34\00:07:22.67 Well, I'm living with a friend 00:07:22.70\00:07:24.14 and I live in somebody else's house and I... 00:07:24.17\00:07:30.45 They do all the fixing? 00:07:30.48\00:07:32.21 They do all the fixing and... 00:07:32.25\00:07:36.65 My friend is 88 00:07:36.69\00:07:38.19 and he has a caretaker to come in and fix his meals 00:07:38.22\00:07:42.86 and, of course, they fix mine too, 00:07:42.89\00:07:45.69 but I quit eating what he eats before I came up here. 00:07:45.73\00:07:51.37 Good. 00:07:51.40\00:07:52.80 Because he has to have eggs and bacon 00:07:52.83\00:07:54.47 every morning for breakfast, 00:07:54.50\00:07:55.84 and I don't like bacon. 00:07:55.87\00:07:57.97 I don't like eggs and... Yeah, too fat. 00:07:58.01\00:08:01.58 Those two things along will clog up your arteries. 00:08:01.61\00:08:03.78 Yeah, they will. Yeah. 00:08:03.81\00:08:05.58 And then he eats about a half a gallon of ice cream 00:08:05.61\00:08:07.42 every night before he goes to bed. 00:08:07.45\00:08:08.85 Oh, how old is he? 00:08:08.88\00:08:10.29 Eighty eight. Well. 00:08:10.32\00:08:12.92 And I cut out the ice cream too. 00:08:12.95\00:08:15.99 Good for you. 00:08:16.02\00:08:17.36 I used to eat a little bit with him 00:08:17.39\00:08:18.73 but I cut it out few weeks before I came up here. 00:08:18.76\00:08:22.90 Good for you. 00:08:22.93\00:08:24.97 And where did you learn that? 00:08:25.00\00:08:27.44 I learnt it from a friend 00:08:27.47\00:08:29.27 that used to work here at NEWSTART. 00:08:29.30\00:08:31.71 Really? A doctor or... 00:08:31.74\00:08:33.81 Oh, you learnt that from Jerry Flores. 00:08:33.84\00:08:36.04 Jerry Flores. Jerry. 00:08:36.08\00:08:38.31 Good old Jerry. 00:08:38.35\00:08:39.68 You know one of the best massage therapist 00:08:39.71\00:08:42.18 I've ever had the pleasure of working with. 00:08:42.22\00:08:43.89 He is good. 00:08:43.92\00:08:45.25 He is good. He is very, very good. 00:08:45.29\00:08:47.06 In fact, didn't Jerry recommend you come here? 00:08:47.09\00:08:49.36 Jerry, yeah, Jerry recommended me 00:08:49.39\00:08:51.63 to come in here to the NEWSTART program and... 00:08:51.66\00:08:53.66 He told me about you at some point in time. 00:08:53.70\00:08:55.96 Yeah. Yeah, he did. Absolutely. 00:19:07.61\00:19:09.08 Can you tell us more, can you tell our guests 00:19:09.11\00:19:11.91 if they're struggling with, 00:19:11.95\00:19:15.58 you know, things like an arm 00:19:15.62\00:19:19.32 that won't work or a leg, what should they do? 00:19:19.35\00:19:22.62 Well, number one is, 00:19:22.66\00:19:23.99 you want to give your body every opportunity 00:19:24.03\00:19:26.70 to heal and improve. 00:19:26.73\00:19:28.06 So you want to really maximize your health 00:19:28.10\00:19:31.03 because especially for those 00:19:31.07\00:19:34.00 who have just recently suffered an injury, 00:19:34.04\00:19:36.84 loss like a recent stroke. 00:19:36.87\00:19:39.31 You really want to increase the body's capacities 00:19:39.34\00:19:42.38 to heal itself. 00:19:42.41\00:19:44.18 So you want to increase the nutrients, 00:19:44.21\00:19:47.32 through going on a whole food plant based diet. 00:19:47.35\00:19:51.02 You want to increase water intake, this dehydration, 00:19:51.05\00:19:55.02 things don't move around as well. 00:19:55.06\00:19:56.52 Your nutrients, your oxygen as well. 00:19:56.56\00:19:59.16 Yeah, you want to get exercise, 00:19:59.19\00:20:01.56 get the oxygen moving through there. 00:20:01.60\00:20:04.03 You know, those things are just so important 00:20:04.07\00:20:07.14 because the body does want to heal itself 00:20:07.17\00:20:10.04 and weak it in our own way sometimes. 00:20:10.07\00:20:11.94 And one of the worst things we do is sometimes, 00:20:11.97\00:20:13.94 when we suffer losses, we just kind of sit back 00:20:13.98\00:20:16.75 and say, "Oh, well." 00:20:16.78\00:20:18.55 And then, we don't do anything and that's the worst thing 00:20:18.58\00:20:21.32 that we can do. 00:20:21.35\00:20:22.68 Give up. Give up, exactly. 00:20:22.72\00:20:24.39 And the mind body connection is so profound, 00:20:24.42\00:20:27.02 just the can do attitude like you said. 00:20:27.06\00:20:31.19 You know, I talk to people all day and I give them, 00:20:31.23\00:20:36.06 a kind of a layman's interpretation 00:20:36.10\00:20:38.60 of what you just said. 00:20:38.63\00:20:39.97 When we feed the body, what is right for the body, 00:20:40.00\00:20:44.64 it knows what to do. 00:20:44.67\00:20:46.47 The body knows what to do. 00:20:46.51\00:20:47.84 It doesn't need instruction. 00:20:47.88\00:20:49.44 It doesn't have to go anywhere to get to learn. 00:20:49.48\00:20:53.31 It heals itself through plant based, 00:20:53.35\00:20:57.75 exercise, water... 00:20:57.79\00:20:59.72 And the grace of God. 00:20:59.75\00:21:01.09 Grace of God, we mustn't leave that out. 00:21:01.12\00:21:05.19 So, Doc, I want to thank you 00:21:05.23\00:21:07.16 and again let the guests know that 00:21:07.20\00:21:10.17 we're really happy that you're here with us, 00:21:10.20\00:21:12.13 and we thank the world of you already. 00:21:12.17\00:21:14.90 Thank you so much. 00:21:14.94\00:21:16.27 You've only been, you've made a good impression. 00:21:16.30\00:21:18.47 Oh, thank you. 00:21:18.51\00:21:20.91 Thank you, Dr. K. My pleasure. 00:21:20.94\00:21:22.38 Do you mind if I call you Dr. K? 00:21:22.41\00:21:23.75 I'm fine with that. Okay. 00:21:23.78\00:21:25.58 Friends, thank you. 00:21:25.61\00:21:27.65 Don't go away, please, 00:21:27.68\00:21:29.02 we've got a tip for you following this. 00:21:29.05\00:21:30.95 Welcome to our NEWSTART kitchen. 00:21:34.96\00:21:36.73 I'm really excited to show you 00:21:36.76\00:21:38.29 how to make a Rice Krispie treat, 00:21:38.33\00:21:40.80 without all of the sugar. 00:21:40.83\00:21:42.80 I've been growing up with Rice Krispie Treat, 00:21:42.83\00:21:45.03 I use the marshmallows, you know, on the butter. 00:21:45.07\00:21:47.90 We're going to skip all of that, 00:21:47.94\00:21:49.40 and I'm going to use healthy ingredients. 00:21:49.44\00:21:51.34 What goes into the Rice Krispie treats 00:21:51.37\00:21:53.21 are our brown rice crisps or brown rice Krispies. 00:21:53.24\00:21:56.34 Find whichever work for you but I really love this brand. 00:21:56.38\00:21:59.55 It's veganic and sprouted and what that means is that 00:21:59.58\00:22:02.98 it's totally vegan 00:22:03.02\00:22:04.65 and before they actually turn this into rice Krispies, 00:22:04.69\00:22:08.16 they sprout the rice. 00:22:08.19\00:22:09.72 So, it has about three ingredients 00:22:09.76\00:22:11.23 and that's kind of what we're looking for. 00:22:11.26\00:22:13.19 We don't want a lot of ingredients. 00:22:13.23\00:22:15.23 We want our food to be our ingredients, right? 00:22:15.26\00:22:17.63 We'll be using some almond butter 00:22:17.67\00:22:19.30 to replace traditional butter in this recipe. 00:22:19.33\00:22:22.40 I'll be using this brown rice syrup 00:22:22.44\00:22:24.34 which is wonderful, 00:22:24.37\00:22:26.71 it has a really nice caramelly flavor, 00:22:26.74\00:22:29.18 and it's going to be nice in this recipe. 00:22:29.21\00:22:31.51 And we'll also be using some maple syrup 00:22:31.55\00:22:33.11 to give it just a little bit of something special, 00:22:33.15\00:22:36.18 and then a pinch of salt. 00:22:36.22\00:22:38.25 Okay, so what we want to do is, 00:22:38.29\00:22:39.82 get our burner on to about a medium high 00:22:39.85\00:22:43.83 and we're going to pour in our almond butter. 00:22:43.86\00:22:46.09 We want this all to blend really well together. 00:22:49.46\00:22:54.20 Okay, I'll let you learn a little secret. 00:22:54.24\00:22:55.97 What I'm really making is kind of like a caramel sauce. 00:22:56.00\00:23:00.08 So could you use this as a caramel sauce? 00:23:00.11\00:23:02.18 Absolutely. 00:23:02.21\00:23:03.55 You could put this little concoction we have here 00:23:03.58\00:23:06.21 over some popcorn, okay. 00:23:06.25\00:23:08.42 And then make some common corn, 00:23:08.45\00:23:10.59 but today we're going to be using this 00:23:10.62\00:23:12.69 for Rice Krispie treats. 00:23:12.72\00:23:15.72 Maple syrup, and a pinch of salt. 00:23:15.76\00:23:20.23 All right. 00:23:24.40\00:23:25.73 So I'm just going to go ahead, 00:23:25.77\00:23:28.14 stir this all together. 00:23:28.17\00:23:29.50 You don't want to burn this, 00:23:33.01\00:23:34.54 so you do want to stir it 00:23:34.58\00:23:38.25 constantly until everything melts together. 00:23:38.28\00:23:40.32 Turn this down slightly. 00:23:44.05\00:23:46.39 We don't want to spoil the almond butter. 00:23:46.42\00:23:48.76 Okay, and just like that we have a great concoction. 00:23:56.67\00:24:00.97 And nice slurry to combine our Rice Krispies together. 00:24:01.00\00:24:05.94 Turn this off, remove it from the heat 00:24:05.97\00:24:09.24 and then add your Rice Krispies. 00:24:09.28\00:24:14.08 And make sure you get everything coated. 00:24:14.12\00:24:15.68 And incidentally, you don't have to use 00:24:23.09\00:24:24.89 Rice Krispies for this if you don't have it. 00:24:24.93\00:24:27.33 Why not throw any kind of cereal in here, cheerios. 00:24:27.36\00:24:30.93 And the other cool thing with this recipe 00:24:30.97\00:24:32.73 is you could add some great nuts to this, 00:24:32.77\00:24:35.40 you can add some raisins. 00:24:35.44\00:24:37.67 And this could be a little breakfast bar for you. 00:24:37.71\00:24:41.74 But I like it as an old fashioned 00:24:41.78\00:24:45.41 Rice Krispie treat, 00:24:45.45\00:24:47.45 that I thought that once I went vegan, 00:24:47.48\00:24:49.92 I was going to give all that up, 00:24:49.95\00:24:51.79 but not anymore. 00:24:51.82\00:24:54.72 This is a great alternative. 00:24:54.76\00:24:57.33 Okay, so what I'm going to do is I'm going to put this 00:24:57.36\00:25:00.13 into a springform pan. 00:25:00.16\00:25:01.73 Or you could just add it to any kind of, 00:25:01.76\00:25:04.37 you know, dish that you like. 00:25:04.40\00:25:05.93 But there is nothing like a springform pan. 00:25:05.97\00:25:07.74 As once this sets up, then I can just take it off, 00:25:07.77\00:25:10.67 and it's really simple, you can remove it, like so 00:25:10.71\00:25:14.04 and have your Rice Krispies on a platter like that. 00:25:14.08\00:25:17.35 And the other cool thing 00:25:17.38\00:25:18.71 is you could actually even frost this. 00:25:18.75\00:25:20.88 Can make it look like a cake, so for those special occasions 00:25:20.92\00:25:24.75 when you have birthday parties 00:25:24.79\00:25:26.12 or however you want to celebrate with a cake, 00:25:26.15\00:25:29.66 you could do it with the Rice Krispie treat. 00:25:29.69\00:25:32.43 So let me put this back in here. 00:25:32.46\00:25:35.53 Pretty simple, you just get it set, 00:25:35.56\00:25:38.70 and then tighten it up. 00:25:38.73\00:25:42.94 Okay, so let's add this to our springform pan. 00:25:42.97\00:25:47.28 So, let's get this away. 00:25:47.31\00:25:50.68 You can see what I'm doing here. 00:25:50.71\00:25:54.08 You can get all that goodness of the bottom here, 00:25:54.12\00:25:57.52 throw a lot of flavors. 00:25:57.55\00:25:59.65 Careful not to burn yourself. 00:25:59.69\00:26:01.32 All right, and the reason I have gloves 00:26:04.46\00:26:06.73 is because it can be little sticky 00:26:06.76\00:26:08.43 when you're trying to form it into the pan. 00:26:08.46\00:26:11.27 But we could also just use wax paper 00:26:11.30\00:26:13.90 and use it to help you push down these Rice Krispies, 00:26:13.94\00:26:17.24 and we want to get this nice and packed. 00:26:17.27\00:26:19.24 So I'm just going to use my hands here. 00:26:19.27\00:26:22.24 And these gloves work great for that. 00:26:22.28\00:26:25.58 So get that in nice and tight. 00:26:25.61\00:26:27.42 Okay, so what will I do at this stage? 00:26:38.19\00:26:40.23 I'm going to put this in the refrigerator 00:26:40.26\00:26:42.10 for about 20 minutes just to let it set up 00:26:42.13\00:26:44.50 and get these bars so that they'll be nice and cold 00:26:44.53\00:26:47.97 or you could use it at this stage when it is warm 00:26:48.00\00:26:52.17 but it seems to be a little bit better 00:26:52.21\00:26:53.64 when they're cold. 00:26:53.68\00:26:55.91 And you could cheat a little bit too 00:26:55.94\00:26:57.38 and put it in the freezer for about five minutes 00:26:57.41\00:26:59.91 and that will set up really quickly for you. 00:26:59.95\00:27:02.68 Okay. 00:27:02.72\00:27:05.15 All right, so here is our Rice Krispie treat. 00:27:05.19\00:27:07.72 And let me show me once I take this springform pan off, 00:27:07.76\00:27:11.86 how lovely that just sets up for you. 00:27:11.89\00:27:14.16 And have fun, decorate this, do what you want. 00:27:14.20\00:27:16.87 Cut into squares, and have a really nice treat 00:27:16.90\00:27:19.70 for all of your friends and your family. 00:27:19.73\00:27:22.20 So enjoy. 00:27:22.24\00:27:23.61 Well, friends, that's it for today. 00:27:26.88\00:27:28.48 But join us next week for another episode. 00:27:28.51\00:27:31.68 In the mean time, pick up the phone 00:27:31.71\00:27:33.28 and give us a call at 800-525-9192. 00:27:33.31\00:27:39.22 Mention the NEWSTART Now program 00:27:39.25\00:27:42.02 and receive the NEWSTART special. 00:27:42.06\00:27:44.59
