Hi, friends, and welcome to another edition 00:01:12.73\00:01:14.90 of NEWSTART Now. 00:01:14.94\00:01:16.37 I'm your host Ron Giannoni. 00:01:16.40\00:01:18.77 In our studio is with me, we have a lovely young lady 00:01:18.81\00:01:21.54 from Seattle, Washington, Jeanette Spreadborough. 00:01:21.58\00:01:26.01 And I'd like to take a look at when she first arrived. 00:01:26.05\00:01:31.65 I went to camp meeting this year, and I was inspired 00:01:31.69\00:01:35.09 by the talk about the power of prayer. 00:01:35.12\00:01:37.83 So I said a prayer to the Lord, I said, you know, 00:01:37.86\00:01:39.89 "Dear Lord, I've gained weight, I've got some ailments, 00:01:39.93\00:01:44.03 some rheumatoid arthritis, and I want to be healthy," 00:01:44.07\00:01:48.34 and so I prayed about it. 00:01:48.37\00:01:50.24 And within a week, I got a text message from this lady 00:01:50.27\00:01:54.18 that I had just met about a month ago, and she goes, 00:01:54.21\00:01:56.75 "Do you want to go to Weimar?" 00:01:56.78\00:01:58.21 And I was like, "Oh, the Lord wants me to go to Weimar, 00:01:58.25\00:02:01.25 this is how..." 00:02:01.28\00:02:02.62 I was like... 00:02:02.65\00:02:03.99 and then I was able to get the time off from work 00:02:04.02\00:02:06.35 'cause I was already scheduled to work during this month 00:02:06.39\00:02:09.22 and they gave me time off 00:02:09.26\00:02:10.83 and I was able to get a scholarship, 00:02:10.86\00:02:12.66 some other families and church members helped me, 00:02:12.69\00:02:16.33 my husband's off-work. 00:02:16.36\00:02:17.70 So it was just like the Lord made it happen. 00:02:17.73\00:02:20.24 So here I am, and I'm so happy to be here. 00:02:20.27\00:02:22.67 So my ailments, I was diagnosed back in 2005 00:02:22.70\00:02:26.78 with rheumatoid arthritis. 00:02:26.81\00:02:28.88 It stays in remission so I take a medication 00:02:28.91\00:02:32.75 called HUMIRA and it's a sub-q injection. 00:02:32.78\00:02:35.38 But I do get fatigued and I work fulltime 00:02:35.42\00:02:39.15 as a registered nurse on ICU units, 00:02:39.19\00:02:41.02 so I'm under a lot of stress. 00:02:41.06\00:02:43.59 What I would like to get out of the NEWSTART program 00:02:43.63\00:02:46.43 is to get a newly sound life, 00:02:46.46\00:02:48.03 I'd like to not have to take my HUMIRA 00:02:48.06\00:02:51.23 and not have the aches and pains of the rheumatoid. 00:02:51.27\00:02:53.94 I'd like to gain the knowledge so I can share it with others 00:02:53.97\00:02:57.54 and be a light for the Lord and to be an example 00:02:57.57\00:03:00.71 of what a healthy lifestyle is. 00:03:00.74\00:03:04.01 So I'm hoping that the cyst in my liver that 00:03:04.05\00:03:07.82 that will shrink and also I'm hoping 00:03:07.85\00:03:10.99 that my liver enzymes are lower, 00:03:11.02\00:03:14.39 they take a little bump, not real high 00:03:14.42\00:03:17.26 but enough to make me concerned. 00:03:17.29\00:03:18.99 So I'm just hoping to just gain my health 00:03:19.03\00:03:21.63 and so that I can live a strong healthy life 00:03:21.66\00:03:24.30 and be an example for others 00:03:24.33\00:03:26.87 and share the knowledge that I gain from here. 00:03:26.90\00:03:33.01 Welcome back, friends. And it was the Atkins diet. 00:08:40.82\00:08:42.78 Oh, no. I did do that. 00:08:42.82\00:08:44.75 And it was that year that I came down with arthritis. 00:08:44.79\00:08:48.46 So the correlation plus a lot of stress 00:08:48.49\00:08:51.63 'cause once again I was working in neurotrauma ICU, 00:08:51.66\00:08:53.86 working night shifts. 00:08:53.90\00:08:55.23 So I had lot of strikes to get me. 00:08:55.26\00:08:57.17 I was in night shift, they were 12-14-hour shifts, 00:08:57.20\00:09:01.10 I was committing it and having to sleep 00:09:01.14\00:09:03.41 during the day against my circadian rhythm, 00:09:03.44\00:09:05.57 plus I was doing a low-carb diet. 00:09:05.61\00:09:08.91 And I lost weight with it, I lost like 20 pounds. 00:09:08.94\00:09:10.75 Oh yeah, oh yeah, it works. 00:09:10.78\00:09:12.48 I did it just before I had open heart surgery. 00:09:12.51\00:09:15.18 So yeah... 00:09:15.22\00:09:17.02 Did you catch that? 00:09:17.05\00:09:18.95 Yeah, open heart surgery, yes. Yeah. 00:09:18.99\00:09:21.42 So that high protein and fat, it's no good. 00:09:21.46\00:09:24.89 By the way that doctor died from heart attack. 00:09:24.93\00:09:28.20 Nonetheless, the arthritis, did you know back then 00:09:28.23\00:09:34.17 what was causing the pain? 00:09:34.20\00:09:37.31 No, I didn't know what was causing the pain 00:09:37.34\00:09:39.67 but I was in so much pain, I couldn't even... 00:09:39.71\00:09:43.21 and I'm like, I consider myself young, 00:09:43.24\00:09:46.98 and I couldn't bend over and tie my shoes. 00:09:47.02\00:09:48.68 By the way, I consider you young. 00:09:48.72\00:09:50.22 Yeah, I was like I couldn't, you know... 00:09:50.25\00:09:52.29 I was in my late 30s, I wasn't even 40 00:09:52.32\00:09:55.56 and I couldn't even tie my shoes, I couldn't... 00:09:55.59\00:09:58.13 My knees were so sore, 00:09:58.16\00:09:59.49 all of my joints were just inflamed. 00:09:59.53\00:10:02.13 What did you discover while you were here 00:10:02.16\00:10:04.43 about inflammation? 00:10:04.47\00:10:06.17 I discovered that the cholesterol 00:10:06.20\00:10:08.84 from the meat products, anything that has a face, 00:10:08.87\00:10:13.71 or a mother that has a face contributes 00:10:13.74\00:10:15.54 to that inflammation process. 00:10:15.58\00:10:17.35 And the inflammation is what causes what? 00:10:17.38\00:10:19.91 The autoimmune that it can contribute 00:10:19.95\00:10:22.08 to the autoimmune diseases. 00:10:22.12\00:10:23.52 And so now that you've changed your lifestyle, anymore pain? 00:10:23.55\00:10:28.92 I've no pain, in fact, I'm amazed 00:10:28.96\00:10:32.93 because I haven't taken my... 00:10:32.96\00:10:35.26 So there was two types, I used to take ENBREL, 00:10:35.30\00:10:37.23 it was once a week. 00:10:37.27\00:10:38.60 But now, I'm taking HUMIRA 00:10:38.63\00:10:39.97 which is a tumor necrotic factor, 00:10:40.00\00:10:42.10 protein receptor I believe. 00:10:42.14\00:10:43.94 And not only is it very expensive 00:10:43.97\00:10:47.08 but you have to give yourself an injection 00:10:47.11\00:10:48.74 and I'm just going to talk to my rheumatologist 00:10:48.78\00:10:51.71 but I'm feeling like my body is going into just changing 00:10:51.75\00:10:56.62 and not going to need to have that medication. 00:10:56.65\00:10:58.29 No. 00:10:58.32\00:10:59.65 I'm not having any pain and normally by this time 00:10:59.69\00:11:01.72 my feet start aching and I'm over a week 00:11:01.76\00:11:05.33 since my last, since I'm due for it. 00:11:05.36\00:11:07.83 So I'm excited to have them run the labs 00:11:07.86\00:11:12.53 because normally when somebody with RA, 00:11:12.57\00:11:14.47 I believe they have like an elevation of the TNF factor 00:11:14.50\00:11:18.04 which is Tumor necrotic factor. 00:11:18.07\00:11:20.38 So those are kind of marker, so I'm looking forward 00:11:20.41\00:11:23.68 to staying very faithful to my new lifestyle, you know, 00:11:23.71\00:11:28.58 eating a plant-based diet, exercise, lots of water, 00:11:28.62\00:11:32.52 and getting that good sleep. 00:11:32.55\00:11:33.89 Yes. 00:11:33.92\00:11:35.26 And not being stressed out, 00:11:35.29\00:11:36.62 and to say my prayers to the Lord, 00:11:36.66\00:11:37.99 and get it up to Him because He brought me here, 00:11:38.03\00:11:40.46 and He has plans for me. 00:11:40.50\00:11:42.36 And I'm looking forward to following up on you, 00:11:42.40\00:11:45.53 and I want to thank you, we've run out of time. 00:11:45.57\00:11:47.54 Okay. We'll be in touch. 00:11:49.00\00:11:50.34 Okay. 00:11:50.37\00:11:51.71 But, friends, don't go away 00:11:51.74\00:11:53.07 'cause the doctor will be right with us. 00:11:53.11\00:11:55.64 When we look at the health status 00:11:55.68\00:11:57.05 of Americans today, it's alarming to see 00:11:57.08\00:11:59.48 that 60% are either overweight or obese. 00:11:59.51\00:12:03.45 In addition, diseases such as Type 2 diabetes, 00:12:08.12\00:12:11.16 cancer, and heart disorders are the leading cause 00:12:11.19\00:12:13.63 of so many complications and deaths every year. 00:12:13.66\00:12:16.87 Could it have something to do with what we eat? 00:12:21.00\00:12:23.67 After all, every one in four Americans 00:12:23.71\00:12:26.31 visits a fast food restaurant daily, 00:12:26.34\00:12:28.51 and with such easy access to quick-fix foods, 00:12:28.54\00:12:32.15 we tend to forget the poor health value 00:12:32.18\00:12:34.08 those foods actually offer. 00:12:34.12\00:12:37.05 Maybe it's the sedentary lifestyle 00:12:37.09\00:12:38.89 and lack of exercise that we've become 00:12:38.92\00:12:40.82 so accustomed to as a media-dependant world. 00:12:40.86\00:12:44.43 Whatever the cause of these diseases, 00:12:44.46\00:12:46.26 a solution has arrived. 00:12:46.29\00:12:50.57 The NEWSTART lifestyle center offers 00:12:50.60\00:12:52.70 an enriching program where patients can get 00:12:52.73\00:12:54.94 a healing of mind, body, and soul, 00:12:54.97\00:12:57.74 located in the outskirts of Sacramento, 00:12:57.77\00:13:00.28 the NEWSTART center is situated on the beautiful campus 00:13:00.31\00:13:03.35 of Weimar Centre of Health and Education 00:13:03.38\00:13:06.21 with scenic walking and hiking trails all around. 00:13:06.25\00:13:09.92 With a "whole plant foods eating whole" motto, 00:13:09.95\00:13:13.29 the NEWSTART center promotes a healthy plant-based diet 00:13:13.32\00:13:16.42 with an emphasis on natural foods. 00:13:16.46\00:13:18.93 The NEWSTART staff are made up of California Board Certified 00:13:18.96\00:13:22.53 nurses, doctors, dietitians, and therapists 00:13:22.56\00:13:26.37 who work together to assist each patient personally. 00:13:26.40\00:13:29.80 The staff are dedicated to each patient's success 00:13:29.84\00:13:32.44 in the program and are always there 00:13:32.47\00:13:34.38 to guide, advise, and encourage. 00:13:34.41\00:13:37.35 In addition to a healthy lifestyle, 00:13:37.38\00:13:39.48 NEWSTART also promotes a healthy exercise routine. 00:13:39.51\00:13:42.55 You're both in sequence, that's good, all right. 00:13:42.58\00:13:45.35 As part of the balance program, there's much opportunity 00:13:45.39\00:13:48.39 to get in the fair share of physical activity 00:13:48.42\00:13:51.03 from utilizing our fitness center 00:13:51.06\00:13:53.19 to taking a stroll around the peaceful grounds of Weimar. 00:13:53.23\00:13:56.90 It's amazing what a new start can do for you. 00:13:56.93\00:14:02.57 Welcome back, friends. Oh yes, she is. 00:14:52.15\00:14:54.39 She is an ICU nurse. Yes. 00:14:54.42\00:14:56.29 They have to be sharp 00:14:56.32\00:14:57.66 and they have to be independent thinkers 00:14:57.69\00:15:00.53 to be able to sometimes manage those acute care situations. 00:15:00.56\00:15:04.83 Yeah... 00:15:04.87\00:15:06.20 But she is wonderful lady, wonderful. 00:15:06.23\00:15:08.90 So we've seen some progress. 00:15:08.94\00:15:11.97 Tell us from a doctor's perspective 00:15:12.01\00:15:14.91 what do you think is going on. 00:15:14.94\00:15:16.61 Well, she has a history of Rheumatoid arthritis 00:15:16.64\00:15:18.88 and has had a lot of aches and pains, 00:15:18.91\00:15:22.08 especially in her hands. 00:15:22.12\00:15:24.12 And since coming here, 00:15:24.15\00:15:26.55 she noticed that her inflammation has decreased 00:15:26.59\00:15:30.53 and she is feeling a lot better, 00:15:30.56\00:15:32.19 really has not had a flare of rheumatoid arthritis 00:15:32.23\00:15:35.53 since she came here. 00:15:35.56\00:15:37.10 And as, you know, our lifestyle and diet 00:15:37.13\00:15:40.00 is a low inflammation lifestyle. 00:15:40.04\00:15:44.64 And so if we can decrease her inflammation, 00:15:44.67\00:15:46.74 we're going to decrease our things like 00:15:46.78\00:15:49.31 rheumatoid arthritis, other diseases as well. 00:15:49.34\00:15:51.51 Now this is a message that I think our guests 00:15:51.55\00:15:53.85 that are watching really need to hear that. 00:15:53.88\00:15:57.55 I've been told and you could correct me I'm sure 00:15:57.59\00:16:01.56 that most lifestyle diseases are from inflammation 00:16:01.59\00:16:06.80 generally caused by what we eating, 00:16:06.83\00:16:09.73 what we're putting in our body, correct? 00:16:09.76\00:16:11.70 And also how we live, you know, 00:16:11.73\00:16:13.97 inflammation impacts all of our body. 00:16:14.00\00:16:17.14 It creates what we call oxidative stress. 00:16:17.17\00:16:20.74 And oxidative stress impacts the function 00:16:20.78\00:16:23.68 of our immune system. 00:16:23.71\00:16:25.65 If our immune system is not functioning properly, 00:16:25.68\00:16:28.42 we're more prone to infection, bacterial, 00:16:28.45\00:16:32.05 viral, fungal infections, all of those. 00:16:32.09\00:16:35.12 And then if our immune system is not functioning properly, 00:16:35.16\00:16:38.19 it may make us prone to autoimmune type diseases 00:16:38.23\00:16:41.43 where our body starts to attack itself. 00:16:41.46\00:16:44.53 And if our immune system is not functioning properly, 00:16:44.57\00:16:47.37 we're at increased risk 00:16:47.40\00:16:48.74 for all kinds of other ailments, 00:16:48.77\00:16:50.61 all kinds of other little things. 00:16:50.64\00:16:52.97 Cancer is one of the things that can hide sometimes 00:16:53.01\00:16:56.48 when we have increased inflammation 00:16:56.51\00:16:58.01 in our body. 00:16:58.05\00:16:59.38 They hide, they clothe themselves 00:16:59.41\00:17:00.75 I understand. 00:17:00.78\00:17:02.12 That's exactly right. 00:17:02.15\00:17:03.49 They clothe themselves to prevent our immune system 00:17:03.52\00:17:05.25 from recognizing. 00:17:05.29\00:17:06.62 Isn't that amazing? It is. It is. 00:17:06.65\00:17:07.99 Yeah and because we change our lifestyle, 00:17:08.02\00:17:10.96 and we reduce the stress, and we're eating these plants 00:17:10.99\00:17:15.30 and all of a sudden, the killer cells... 00:17:15.33\00:17:18.43 The natural killer cells get boosted. 00:17:18.47\00:17:20.84 You know, this is fascinating since you brought this up. 00:17:20.87\00:17:23.61 One of the things that happens 00:17:23.64\00:17:25.24 is when we're on an animal protein diet, 00:17:25.27\00:17:28.71 the cancer cells can use that animal protein 00:17:28.74\00:17:32.18 to coat themselves and there by hide. 00:17:32.21\00:17:36.08 And some of the digestive enzymes 00:17:36.12\00:17:38.92 our bodies use to kill cancer cells 00:17:38.95\00:17:43.32 get used up in digesting the protein 00:17:43.36\00:17:46.46 and the meat that we eat. 00:17:46.49\00:17:47.83 Isn't that interesting. 00:17:47.86\00:17:49.20 So it's a double whammy. Yeah. 00:17:49.23\00:17:51.20 Whereas when you're on a plant-based diet, 00:17:51.23\00:17:54.47 you actually are able to strengthen your immune system. 00:17:54.50\00:17:59.54 So it'll work better, it'll pick up on things better 00:17:59.57\00:18:02.78 and it will help to destroy things like cancer 00:18:02.81\00:18:06.41 and other sources of inflammation. 00:18:06.45\00:18:08.75 We know... 00:18:08.78\00:18:10.12 She had mentioned, Jeanette had mentioned 00:18:10.15\00:18:12.19 her arthritis seemed to... 00:18:12.22\00:18:16.26 no pain. 00:18:16.29\00:18:17.63 Right. 00:18:17.66\00:18:18.99 And she is lost some weight, and are there any other issues 00:18:19.03\00:18:21.96 that she was dealing with it? 00:18:22.00\00:18:23.67 You know, one of the interesting things, 00:18:23.70\00:18:25.97 she is on shots for her rheumatoid arthritis 00:18:26.00\00:18:29.97 and was getting them about every two weeks. 00:18:30.01\00:18:32.97 She has been with us for little over two weeks 00:18:33.01\00:18:35.24 and had a shot before she came and has not had a flare up. 00:18:35.28\00:18:39.75 So we're recommending that we start to space 00:18:39.78\00:18:42.25 those shots out farther and farther. 00:18:42.28\00:18:44.52 And who knows, by God's grace, may be over time 00:18:44.55\00:18:46.76 she will be able to get off of that medicine. 00:18:46.79\00:18:48.92 Wouldn't that be a blessing? 00:18:48.96\00:18:50.29 That would be a tremendous blessing. 00:18:50.33\00:18:52.39 Looks like she is heading in that direction. 00:18:52.43\00:18:55.03 It looks that way. And she is totally onboard. 00:18:55.06\00:18:57.27 Oh yeah, oh yeah, she is excited. 00:18:57.30\00:18:59.53 And her husband at home, she's been sharing information 00:18:59.57\00:19:02.80 with him, and he is excited and onboard as well. 00:19:02.84\00:19:05.67 Oh, that's a blessing. 00:19:05.71\00:19:07.04 That means, you know, 00:19:07.08\00:19:08.41 that makes all the difference in the world. 00:19:08.44\00:19:09.78 When you have support of family, 00:19:09.81\00:19:11.15 it makes you so much more successful. 00:19:11.18\00:19:13.92 You know, you've bring up a good point. 00:19:13.95\00:19:15.45 If there are people watching and they are going to come 00:19:15.48\00:19:18.35 to the NEWSTART program, 00:19:18.39\00:19:20.19 don't you think it's really important 00:19:20.22\00:19:22.69 that they bring their significant other, 00:19:22.72\00:19:24.59 be it their husband, wife, child, or mother 00:19:24.63\00:19:29.36 because if I had to go home and explain to my wife 00:19:29.40\00:19:33.13 what I learned here in 18 days, I couldn't have done it. 00:19:33.17\00:19:36.77 It's hard. 00:19:36.81\00:19:38.14 I don't know that I would have succeeded 00:19:38.17\00:19:39.81 as well as I have. 00:19:39.84\00:19:41.18 Yeah. 00:19:41.21\00:19:42.54 You know, when we made our lifestyle change, 00:19:42.58\00:19:43.95 we did it as a family. 00:19:43.98\00:19:45.61 And it makes it so much easier, you support each other, 00:19:45.65\00:19:49.05 and besides that, you also hold each other accountable, 00:19:49.08\00:19:52.29 and that goes a long way to success. 00:19:52.32\00:19:54.26 Yes, it does. "Ah, shouldn't eat that." 00:19:54.29\00:19:56.46 Yeah, exactly. 00:19:56.49\00:19:57.83 We had a guest over for lunch one day and he said, 00:19:57.86\00:20:00.60 "What's in that dressing?" 00:20:00.63\00:20:02.80 And he had only been here a week, 00:20:02.83\00:20:05.27 you know who I'm talking about? 00:20:05.30\00:20:06.63 Yeah, Harry. 00:20:06.67\00:20:08.00 Yeah. 00:20:08.04\00:20:09.37 And he, "What's in there, I can't eat that. 00:20:09.40\00:20:11.47 No, is that real cheese?" 00:20:11.51\00:20:12.87 I said, "Come on, this is all vegan." 00:20:12.91\00:20:14.64 That's right. But he was testing us. 00:20:14.68\00:20:16.51 Yeah. 00:20:16.54\00:20:17.88 What showed me that he is listening as, you know, 00:20:17.91\00:20:21.98 all our guests listen and they learn and in fact, 00:20:22.02\00:20:26.76 Jeanette was sharing how much she has learnt 00:20:26.79\00:20:29.42 even though she is in the business. 00:20:29.46\00:20:32.49 Yeah. 00:20:32.53\00:20:33.86 She is not a doctor obviously but she is a nurse. 00:20:33.90\00:20:35.60 No, very knowledgeable nurse. 00:20:35.63\00:20:36.97 Very, very knowledgeable. 00:20:37.00\00:20:38.33 But she learned a lot by attending the lectures here. 00:20:38.37\00:20:42.40 Praise God. Yeah, amen. 00:20:42.44\00:20:43.84 Praise God. 00:20:43.87\00:20:45.21 Anything that you might add to that? 00:20:45.24\00:20:48.34 You know, I would just say this that people 00:20:48.38\00:20:52.71 who make lifestyle change reap so many benefits. 00:20:52.75\00:20:57.05 Some of them are things that we expect 00:20:57.09\00:20:59.45 but some of them are things that we don't expect. 00:20:59.49\00:21:02.22 She has bubbly personality to begin with, 00:21:02.26\00:21:05.09 but she is so excited about where she is now 00:21:05.13\00:21:08.36 compared to where she was when she first came 00:21:08.40\00:21:10.93 that I really think this excitement 00:21:10.97\00:21:14.87 and enthusiasm is going to be contagious. 00:21:14.90\00:21:16.81 And she's going to be able to tell others 00:21:16.84\00:21:18.64 some of the things that she has learned. 00:21:18.67\00:21:20.31 Yeah. She is rather bubbly. 00:21:20.34\00:21:23.04 Oh yes, she is. She is a wonderful person. 00:21:23.08\00:21:25.31 She was real excited about losing several inches 00:21:25.35\00:21:29.08 in her waist and hips, and... 00:21:29.12\00:21:30.49 In fact, I think she lost over five inches in her waist. 00:21:30.52\00:21:33.46 Yeah. Which is fantastic. 00:21:33.49\00:21:35.66 Yeah. Yeah. 00:21:35.69\00:21:37.03 That's excellent. 00:21:37.06\00:21:38.63 And, you know, these nurses, they have these 12-hour shifts, 00:21:38.66\00:21:42.50 and they got to eat on the run, and they grab something 00:21:42.53\00:21:45.17 in the cafeteria which probably shouldn't be fed to anybody. 00:21:45.20\00:21:49.74 Nonetheless, doc, I want to thank you again 00:21:49.77\00:21:52.51 for taking your time. 00:21:52.54\00:21:54.04 Thank you. 00:21:54.08\00:21:55.41 It's always a pleasure to have you here. 00:21:55.44\00:21:56.78 Likewise, likewise. 00:21:56.81\00:21:58.15 And, friends, it's a pleasure having you here too, 00:21:58.18\00:22:00.28 but don't go away, we have an important message 00:22:00.32\00:22:02.92 following this. 00:22:02.95\00:22:06.05 Caffeine is the world's most popular drug. 00:22:06.09\00:22:08.99 You can find a Starbucks on almost every corner. 00:22:09.02\00:22:12.69 Recent statistics show 00:22:12.73\00:22:14.06 that 83 percent of American adults 00:22:14.10\00:22:16.10 consume coffee, three cups a day on average. 00:22:16.13\00:22:19.37 But what exactly is caffeine 00:22:19.40\00:22:21.34 and how does it affect our bodies? 00:22:21.37\00:22:24.37 Caffeine is known as an energy booster. 00:22:24.41\00:22:26.74 Many people claim that they need coffee 00:22:26.78\00:22:28.38 to improve their focus, stamina, and productivity. 00:22:28.41\00:22:31.28 And several studies seem to support these claims. 00:22:31.31\00:22:34.18 There's just one problem. 00:22:34.22\00:22:35.68 Many studies have used faulty methods failing 00:22:35.72\00:22:38.12 to account the caffeine habits of their participants. 00:22:38.15\00:22:41.49 One study performed 00:22:41.52\00:22:42.86 by John Hopkins Medical School reveals 00:22:42.89\00:22:44.49 that the performance boost of the caffeine only occurs 00:22:44.53\00:22:47.56 in people who are already experiencing 00:22:47.60\00:22:49.60 withdrawals from it. 00:22:49.63\00:22:51.13 This is not a result of caffeine 00:22:51.17\00:22:52.73 truly increasing performance 00:22:52.77\00:22:54.57 but rather a short term reversal 00:22:54.60\00:22:56.50 of caffeine withdrawal. 00:22:56.54\00:22:58.47 When researchers choose participants 00:22:58.51\00:23:00.28 who are not experiencing withdrawal, 00:23:00.31\00:23:02.54 caffeine did not improve performance. 00:23:02.58\00:23:05.31 And one of the things we find with caffeine 00:23:05.35\00:23:07.98 is that even though people seem to be able to do things fast 00:23:08.02\00:23:12.55 and for a longer period of time, 00:23:12.59\00:23:14.96 it's not uncommon that they make more mistakes. 00:23:14.99\00:23:17.69 They've even had notes about the sports teams 00:23:17.73\00:23:21.16 and so they want them to have more energy, 00:23:21.20\00:23:23.67 they give them... 00:23:23.70\00:23:25.07 So they have them take sports drinks 00:23:25.10\00:23:26.67 or probably just containing caffeine 00:23:26.70\00:23:29.07 and they do have more energy 00:23:29.10\00:23:30.44 but they make more mistakes and errors. 00:23:30.47\00:23:32.47 This is also been shown like in people type, 00:23:32.51\00:23:35.21 they can type faster but they make more mistakes. 00:23:35.24\00:23:38.05 So all in all, you're going to be much better off 00:23:38.08\00:23:40.95 not using caffeine. 00:23:40.98\00:23:43.18 Caffeine is a stimulant. 00:23:43.22\00:23:44.65 The chemical name is trimethylxanthine. 00:23:44.69\00:23:47.52 It speeds up the heart rate, increases the blood pressure 00:23:47.56\00:23:50.63 'cause it causes vessel constriction 00:23:50.66\00:23:52.69 which is making the blood vessels smaller. 00:23:52.73\00:23:56.10 And it's very interesting, 00:23:56.13\00:23:57.63 many patients who I've worked with, 00:23:57.67\00:24:00.00 who have high blood pressure and I asked them, 00:24:00.04\00:24:02.20 "Do use coffee or tea?" 00:24:02.24\00:24:03.57 which of course the traditional coffee, tea, 00:24:03.61\00:24:06.24 both contain caffeine and they say, 00:24:06.27\00:24:08.14 "Yes." I said, "Hasn't anyone told you 00:24:08.18\00:24:10.48 that it would be helpful for you 00:24:10.51\00:24:12.75 to control your blood pressure to stop the caffeine?" 00:24:12.78\00:24:15.65 So this is another common effective caffeine, 00:24:15.68\00:24:19.82 it raises the blood pressure as well as... 00:24:19.85\00:24:22.39 as we mentioned increase in the gastric secretions. 00:24:22.42\00:24:25.16 So if people have trouble with ulcers, 00:24:25.19\00:24:27.96 gastroesophageal reflux disease or GERD, 00:24:28.00\00:24:30.97 again they are going to be better off 00:24:31.00\00:24:32.33 to avoid beverages containing caffeine. 00:24:32.37\00:24:35.64 High caffeine consumption is associated 00:24:35.67\00:24:37.97 with many negative symptoms 00:24:38.01\00:24:39.64 including irritability, insomnia, anxiety, 00:24:39.67\00:24:43.68 stress on the heart, elevated blood pressure, 00:24:43.71\00:24:46.65 headaches, heartburn, upset stomach, and dehydration. 00:24:46.68\00:24:51.75 Many people use caffeine to stay awake. 00:24:51.79\00:24:54.26 This may work temporarily but in the long run, 00:24:54.29\00:24:56.93 caffeine causes serious sleep disturbances. 00:24:56.96\00:25:00.20 It makes it more difficult to fall and stay asleep, 00:25:00.23\00:25:02.80 and disturbs the important REM phase of the sleep cycle. 00:25:02.83\00:25:06.60 Caffeine users often fall in to vicious cycle, 00:25:06.63\00:25:09.30 the same caffeine they depend on to wake up in the morning 00:25:09.34\00:25:12.41 keeps them from getting quality sleep at night. 00:25:12.44\00:25:15.24 One of the things we look at with caffeine 00:25:15.28\00:25:16.85 is what we call the half-life of caffeine, 00:25:16.88\00:25:19.38 and the half-life of caffeine is between four and five hours. 00:25:19.41\00:25:23.32 Now as you take a dose of caffeine in the morning 00:25:23.35\00:25:25.92 say at 8 o'clock, you know, to wake up 00:25:25.95\00:25:30.26 and in four hours half of that will be gone, 00:25:30.29\00:25:34.16 and in another four hours half of what's left would be gone. 00:25:34.20\00:25:36.83 So even though people may only take one or two cups 00:25:36.87\00:25:40.44 of coffee in the morning, 00:25:40.47\00:25:41.80 the effects of that last throughout the day. 00:25:41.84\00:25:43.94 And if people have trouble with sleep, 00:25:43.97\00:25:46.27 they definitely should avoid beverages 00:25:46.31\00:25:47.98 containing caffeine. 00:25:48.01\00:25:49.48 If you're using coffee to wake you up, 00:25:49.51\00:25:51.75 an alternative to coffee would be exercise, 00:25:51.78\00:25:54.82 that would be really good. 00:25:54.85\00:25:56.48 Also good brisk shower finishing off 00:25:56.52\00:25:59.92 with cold would help you wake you up. 00:25:59.95\00:26:01.96 Caffeine is especially dangerous for children, 00:26:01.99\00:26:04.49 infants, and pregnant mothers. 00:26:04.53\00:26:06.70 It has been linked to low birth weight 00:26:06.73\00:26:08.46 as well as a variety of health and behavioral problems. 00:26:08.50\00:26:11.93 I would not encourage children use caffeine, 00:26:11.97\00:26:14.70 again, it's a stimulant. 00:26:14.74\00:26:16.30 And I remember when I was working 00:26:16.34\00:26:17.67 in the Marshall Islands, I would see 00:26:17.71\00:26:19.21 these little children probably one to two years of age, 00:26:19.24\00:26:24.08 they would be running around and they would have 00:26:24.11\00:26:26.25 a can of caffeinated soda pop in their hand 00:26:26.28\00:26:29.12 and they would be drinking that. 00:26:29.15\00:26:31.09 And sometimes later on in the evening 00:26:31.12\00:26:34.66 when I would have to go back to the hospital late at night 00:26:34.69\00:26:37.56 to see a patient, I would see these little kids 00:26:37.59\00:26:41.26 running around wide awake, 00:26:41.30\00:26:43.60 they were wide from the caffeine 00:26:43.63\00:26:44.97 which they had earlier in the day. 00:26:45.00\00:26:46.57 So if you want your children to be nice and cooperative 00:26:46.60\00:26:50.37 and raise them so that they will be obedient, 00:26:50.41\00:26:53.78 and loving, and responsive, 00:26:53.81\00:26:56.04 you really want to keep them away 00:26:56.08\00:26:57.55 from caffeine. 00:26:57.58\00:26:59.28 So be safe, treat your body right 00:26:59.31\00:27:01.58 and fill yourself with plenty of good old fashioned water, 00:27:01.62\00:27:05.55 which naturally increases brain function and energy. 00:27:05.59\00:27:09.56 Your body, mood, and pocketbook will thank you. 00:27:09.59\00:27:13.40
