I definitely believe 00:06:58.35\00:06:59.68 it was from the statins 00:06:59.71\00:07:01.05 'cause at my first appointment here, 00:07:01.08\00:07:03.45 Dr. Gallant said to me, 00:07:03.49\00:07:05.02 "Get rid of your statins," and I did. 00:07:05.05\00:07:08.76 And... 00:07:08.79\00:07:10.13 You started feeling better almost immediately? 00:07:10.16\00:07:11.63 Oh, maybe three days. 00:07:11.66\00:07:14.03 Oh! 00:07:14.06\00:07:15.40 About three days, I started feeling clear. 00:07:15.43\00:07:19.63 I was just so relieved and am so relived... 00:07:19.67\00:07:22.40 Yes. 00:07:22.44\00:07:23.77 to be off those things 00:07:23.81\00:07:25.51 and have lost significant weight, 00:07:25.54\00:07:27.88 feel a lot better. 00:07:27.91\00:07:29.48 How much weight did you lose? 00:07:29.51\00:07:30.91 I lost 18 pounds... 00:07:30.95\00:07:32.31 Eighteen pounds? 00:07:32.35\00:07:33.68 which is exactly what you predicted 00:07:33.72\00:07:35.12 before I came. 00:07:35.15\00:07:36.48 I'm so glad, I hit it on the head. 00:07:37.39\00:07:38.95 Yeah, you did that one. Am I just burning calories? 00:08:52.56\00:08:55.53 I can do that some other way. 00:08:55.56\00:08:56.90 Right. 00:08:56.93\00:08:58.73 So understanding the chemicals involved in exercise 00:08:58.77\00:09:03.64 and nutrition is very, very helpful to me 00:09:03.67\00:09:06.61 and medicine, the understanding, 00:09:06.64\00:09:10.15 the chemical effects of medicine. 00:09:10.18\00:09:12.01 A lot of people here were diabetics, 00:09:12.05\00:09:13.58 I'm not diabetic. 00:09:13.62\00:09:15.25 I'm not pre diabetic. 00:09:15.28\00:09:18.15 But still understanding glucose 00:09:18.19\00:09:22.22 and hardening of the arteries, 00:09:22.26\00:09:26.59 how it occurs, how it can be reversed, 00:09:26.63\00:09:30.43 certainly, my, that was happening in me. 00:09:30.47\00:09:34.04 Yeah. Without a doubt. 00:09:34.07\00:09:35.74 And so the information was very motivating 00:09:35.77\00:09:40.91 and as well as just nice to know 00:09:40.94\00:09:44.58 what's going on and how am I feeling and why. 00:09:44.61\00:09:48.12 Why I used to eat and feel a spike 00:09:48.15\00:09:51.49 and then crash. 00:09:51.52\00:09:53.59 Whereas here, it's been so steady, 00:09:53.62\00:09:57.53 it's just unbelievable to me. 00:09:57.56\00:09:58.93 There is a three day fast and it's like, 00:09:58.96\00:10:00.76 "Oh, you want me to go two more day, I don't mind." 00:10:00.80\00:10:02.36 Oh, right. 00:10:02.40\00:10:05.30 That was good. 00:10:05.33\00:10:06.67 The difference in not having sugar, 00:10:06.70\00:10:09.70 not having other things like that. 00:10:09.74\00:10:11.47 So one thing was the information. 00:10:11.51\00:10:14.91 I liked the fast a lot. 00:10:14.94\00:10:16.81 And I had a second thing in mind, 00:10:19.98\00:10:21.62 sorry, but I can't remember what that was. 00:10:21.65\00:10:22.98 That's okay. 00:10:23.02\00:10:24.35 It might come before we're finished here. 00:10:24.39\00:10:26.45 Yeah. 00:10:26.49\00:10:27.89 What about your walking? 00:10:27.92\00:10:29.36 Were you able to walk when you first got here? 00:10:29.39\00:10:34.06 I know you could walk, 00:10:34.10\00:10:35.43 but were you able to go around the 0.5-mile loop, say? 00:10:35.46\00:10:38.47 Yeah. 00:10:38.50\00:10:39.83 A year ago, at my board's behest 00:10:39.87\00:10:43.97 I started walking not a whole lot 00:10:44.01\00:10:48.24 but a little over mile every evening. 00:10:48.28\00:10:52.05 And I felt better and then, I made another long trip 00:10:52.08\00:10:54.45 and it broke my routine 00:10:54.48\00:10:55.82 and when I came back, I was out of it. 00:10:55.85\00:10:58.39 But I like to walk. 00:10:58.42\00:11:00.16 Mmm-hm. 00:11:00.19\00:11:01.52 So I enjoyed the walking here 00:11:01.56\00:11:02.89 that's something I didn't follow through on 00:11:02.92\00:11:05.43 as well as I could have. 00:11:05.46\00:11:08.36 I think I didn't feel as challenged. 00:11:08.40\00:11:09.80 I was more concerned about getting my diet in order 00:11:09.83\00:11:12.97 and things like that 'cause I know I enjoy walking. 00:11:13.00\00:11:16.44 So I walked mile and a half most days 00:11:16.47\00:11:19.07 and some other people did here six miles 00:11:19.11\00:11:21.68 and things like that. 00:11:21.71\00:11:23.31 How many miles are you walking lately 00:11:23.35\00:11:25.38 in the last few days? 00:11:25.41\00:11:26.75 About a mile and half. 00:11:26.78\00:11:28.62 You didn't push it beyond that? Okay. 00:11:28.65\00:11:30.19 No, I didn't really push it. 00:11:30.22\00:11:31.55 Yeah, okay. 00:11:31.59\00:11:32.92 However, my treadmill tests 00:11:32.95\00:11:34.92 improved a great deal from the beginning to the end. 00:11:34.96\00:11:37.79 Good. 00:11:37.83\00:11:39.16 How about your cholesterol and triglycerides and all that? 00:11:39.19\00:11:43.60 Well, he told me to expect 00:11:43.63\00:11:46.60 the triglycerides and the cholesterol 00:11:46.63\00:11:50.34 to go up some 00:11:50.37\00:11:52.71 from being off the meds that would change the number... 00:11:52.74\00:11:56.21 and the affect of the diet would take a longer to kick in. 00:11:56.24\00:12:00.72 So, they did go up a little, 00:12:00.75\00:12:02.85 but negligibly, 00:12:02.88\00:12:05.85 so actually, I was please with that. 00:12:05.89\00:12:10.86 And, you know, you would expect them 00:12:10.89\00:12:14.00 to have gone up a lot more 00:12:14.03\00:12:16.63 after over two weeks of no anti-cholesterol drugs. 00:12:16.67\00:12:21.87 And they went up just very, very slightly. 00:12:21.90\00:12:26.41 Gary, we run out of time. In fact, we're way over time. 00:12:26.44\00:12:29.74 I want to thank you so much for coming and joining us. 00:12:29.78\00:12:33.52 And God be with you, 00:12:33.88\00:12:35.22 and we look forward to seeing you 00:12:35.25\00:12:38.02 on 3ABN one day soon. 00:12:38.05\00:12:40.49 Friends, thank you for joining us, 00:12:40.52\00:12:42.62 don't go away 00:12:42.66\00:12:43.99 'cause Dr Gallant will be right with us. 00:12:44.03\00:12:45.53 Welcome back, friends, and as I promised, 00:13:19.09\00:13:20.96 Dr Gallant in the house. 00:13:21.00\00:13:22.80 Hey, Ron, how are you? 00:13:22.83\00:13:24.17 I'm good, how are you? 00:13:24.20\00:13:25.60 Doing well, thank you. 00:13:25.63\00:13:26.97 I'm excited to be talking about this gentleman. 00:13:27.00\00:13:29.70 I really like this guy. 00:13:29.74\00:13:31.07 There is something that draws me to him. 00:13:31.11\00:13:33.51 During our first interview, 00:13:33.54\00:13:37.58 I felt he was very compassionate. 00:13:37.61\00:13:40.65 Why is that? Is he a preacher or something? 00:13:40.68\00:13:42.62 He didn't tell me here. 00:13:42.65\00:13:44.15 Well, you know, Gary is a great guy. 00:13:44.19\00:13:45.79 I feel the same way that you do. 00:13:45.82\00:13:47.72 I really appreciated the time we spent together. 00:13:47.76\00:13:51.63 I enjoyed interacting with him. 00:13:51.66\00:13:53.70 He is a preacher. He's actually a missionary. 00:13:53.73\00:13:56.16 Missionary, that's right, he did tell me. 00:13:56.20\00:13:58.33 He's been a missionary for 20 plus years, 00:13:58.37\00:14:02.24 I wanna say around 25 or 26 years. 00:14:02.27\00:14:05.87 He has a mission, 00:14:05.91\00:14:07.74 a ministry called China Harvest. 00:14:07.78\00:14:12.35 So he's working in China. 00:14:12.38\00:14:14.58 And the way he describes it to me 00:14:14.62\00:14:16.18 is he is a networker. 00:14:16.22\00:14:19.55 So he helps to get things done for the Chinese believers 00:14:19.59\00:14:25.59 and then he also helps to put them 00:14:25.63\00:14:28.03 in contact with people who can help them 00:14:28.06\00:14:30.43 in with what they're trying to do. 00:14:30.47\00:14:33.34 So how was he doing on the program? 00:14:33.37\00:14:35.40 We noticed he's been through some changes, 00:14:35.44\00:14:37.87 I could see when I've talked to him, 00:14:37.91\00:14:40.21 it's like what's going on there. 00:14:40.24\00:14:42.01 Well, you know, 00:14:42.04\00:14:43.38 he's really been working hard 00:14:43.41\00:14:45.91 on making lifestyle changes. 00:14:45.95\00:14:50.49 Let me start here actually. 00:14:50.52\00:14:52.45 It's interesting how he got here. 00:14:52.49\00:14:55.46 He works with... very closely with a board, 00:14:55.49\00:14:58.89 and his board from his ministry 00:14:58.93\00:15:01.93 realized that he was getting burned out. 00:15:01.96\00:15:04.73 And they decided that he needed to do something different. 00:15:04.77\00:15:08.87 He needed to make some changes. 00:15:08.90\00:15:10.77 And they are the ones who recommended 00:15:10.81\00:15:12.94 that he come to NEWSTART. 00:15:12.97\00:15:15.21 What a blessing! 00:15:15.24\00:15:16.58 It is a blessing, and I've gotta say 00:15:16.61\00:15:19.05 that we've had two or three pastors 00:15:19.08\00:15:21.75 in the last six months 00:15:21.78\00:15:24.45 that have been here for the same identical reasons. 00:15:24.49\00:15:27.26 Yes. 00:15:27.29\00:15:28.62 You know, our pastors 00:15:28.66\00:15:29.99 in all denominations work way too hard. 00:15:30.03\00:15:33.73 You know, they know they have a deadline 00:15:33.76\00:15:35.86 much like you doctors, 00:15:35.90\00:15:37.30 you know, you only supposed to work eight hours, 00:15:37.33\00:15:39.73 but you work 24? 00:15:39.77\00:15:41.10 Yeah. 00:15:41.14\00:15:42.47 You know, you've told me you've done 00:15:42.50\00:15:43.84 that especially being an ER Doc. 00:15:43.87\00:15:45.21 Right. 00:15:45.24\00:15:46.57 And so these pastors gotta love him. 00:15:46.61\00:15:49.28 You know, how do they do it? 00:15:49.31\00:15:51.11 I really feel for them, Ron, I have a burden for pastors. 00:15:51.15\00:15:55.88 You know, I've traveled around the world 00:15:55.92\00:15:57.62 doing different ministries 00:15:57.65\00:15:59.05 and different health educational opportunities 00:15:59.09\00:16:03.63 and pastors are under attack right now. 00:16:03.66\00:16:07.46 I think it's because time is short, 00:16:07.50\00:16:11.03 and they are working hard, 00:16:11.07\00:16:12.53 and the enemy wants to keep them away 00:16:12.57\00:16:15.70 from the sheep. 00:16:15.74\00:16:17.07 Yeah. Or let the sheep run astray. 00:16:17.11\00:16:20.58 So I really do feel for them, but back to our friend Gary, 00:16:20.61\00:16:25.58 he has been here. 00:16:25.61\00:16:28.35 He came here, he had some emotional issues 00:16:28.38\00:16:31.59 that he was working through. 00:16:31.62\00:16:33.02 He was feeling a lot of fatigue and burn out. 00:16:33.05\00:16:36.62 And you know, just today when we were talking 00:16:36.66\00:16:39.66 as we were having our last visit, 00:16:39.69\00:16:41.80 he said to me that he really feels 00:16:41.83\00:16:44.83 that being here has been a blessing, 00:16:44.87\00:16:46.94 blessing from God. 00:16:46.97\00:16:48.30 It has changed his perspective. 00:16:48.34\00:16:52.41 He has enjoyed the food. He has lost weight. 00:16:52.44\00:16:57.35 His health has changed. 00:16:57.38\00:16:59.18 And he's going back home to do things differently. 00:16:59.21\00:17:02.38 You know, it's so good to hear that again. 00:17:02.42\00:17:05.35 As you know, I talk to guest all day long, 00:17:05.39\00:17:08.92 and I talk to people who've been here 00:17:08.96\00:17:11.39 and people who haven't been here yet. 00:17:11.43\00:17:13.56 But all the ones that I do follow up on 00:17:13.60\00:17:16.33 and including the ones that are here currently, 00:17:16.36\00:17:19.70 all say the same thing, 00:17:19.73\00:17:21.07 I wouldn't have believed it if I didn't see it myself. 00:17:21.10\00:17:23.97 It's true. 00:17:24.01\00:17:25.34 And is so hard to believe it's broader, 00:17:25.37\00:17:29.24 I wanna call it miraculous. Amen. 00:17:29.28\00:17:32.01 Because we could see very clearly 00:17:32.05\00:17:34.32 that God's hand is upon this place. 00:17:34.35\00:17:36.32 Absolutely. 00:17:36.35\00:17:37.69 And we see people get healed 00:17:37.72\00:17:40.09 that we don't what's wrong with them. 00:17:40.12\00:17:41.46 Right. 00:17:41.49\00:17:42.82 And yet they come here and they get well. 00:17:42.86\00:17:45.06 "Well, what was wrong?" "We don't know, but he's well." 00:17:45.09\00:17:47.50 Yeah. No, it's true. 00:17:47.53\00:17:48.86 You know what, and that's not the typical, 00:17:48.90\00:17:50.90 but I remember an interview with a guy that came here. 00:17:50.93\00:17:54.64 He'd be all over the country, nobody could help him. 00:17:54.67\00:17:57.37 He came here, he got well. Praise the Lord. 00:17:57.41\00:18:00.44 We didn't know what's wrong with him either, 00:18:00.48\00:18:01.81 but he got well. Praise the Lord. 00:18:01.84\00:18:03.45 That's how God's health plan works. 00:18:03.48\00:18:05.31 That's right. Absolutely. 00:18:05.35\00:18:07.15 And you know, I'd like for you to take some time now. 00:18:07.18\00:18:12.05 Tell us why is this so effective 00:18:12.09\00:18:15.39 what we do? It seems so simple, isn't it? 00:18:15.42\00:18:19.33 Well, I believe that the simple things of God 00:18:19.36\00:18:22.76 can found the wise. 00:18:22.80\00:18:24.97 And you know, 00:18:25.00\00:18:26.57 what we do is we teach people how to change their lifestyle, 00:18:26.60\00:18:30.04 how to apply just very simple principles. 00:18:30.07\00:18:32.51 But I think those principles come 00:18:32.54\00:18:34.18 from our understanding of what God's plan 00:18:34.21\00:18:36.38 is based on scripture 00:18:36.41\00:18:38.35 and based on all the information we have, 00:18:38.38\00:18:40.62 scientific information 00:18:40.65\00:18:42.45 and inspired information and all of that. 00:18:42.48\00:18:45.02 And so, I really believe 00:18:45.05\00:18:46.65 that God's plan is his recipe for how to be healthy. 00:18:46.69\00:18:53.63 Now, one of the things I tell our guests 00:18:53.66\00:18:55.16 when they come here is that health 00:18:55.20\00:18:56.77 is not so that we can live longer, 00:18:56.80\00:18:59.40 it's not so that we don't have any aches and pains. 00:18:59.43\00:19:02.27 We have an easy life. 00:19:02.30\00:19:03.97 It's not so we can harder and make more money. 00:19:04.01\00:19:06.54 That health has a responsibility 00:19:06.57\00:19:09.04 on our part. 00:19:09.08\00:19:10.68 I believe God will bless and preserve our health 00:19:10.71\00:19:13.18 as we use that health to serve him. 00:19:13.21\00:19:15.92 Amen. 00:19:15.95\00:19:17.29 So I tell them, they have 00:19:17.32\00:19:18.65 to take what they've learned now 00:19:18.69\00:19:20.62 and serve him. 00:19:20.66\00:19:21.99 Maybe, it's something as simple as sharing 00:19:22.02\00:19:23.86 what they've learned with others. 00:19:23.89\00:19:25.49 It's kind of like pay and then forward 00:19:25.53\00:19:27.03 Amen, exactly. 00:19:27.06\00:19:29.13 Exactly, so it's just another way 00:19:29.16\00:19:30.90 to kind of reinforce what they've learned 00:19:30.93\00:19:34.20 by sharing it with others. 00:19:34.24\00:19:35.57 And then, 00:19:35.60\00:19:36.94 showing them how God can change their lives as well. 00:19:36.97\00:19:39.77 Now, he said to me and during our interviews 00:19:39.81\00:19:44.05 that he came here as depressed 00:19:44.08\00:19:46.01 and burn out and had a little bit 00:19:46.05\00:19:48.32 of this and that going on. 00:19:48.35\00:19:50.15 Is he off most of his medications now? 00:19:50.19\00:19:53.39 He is off most of his medications right now. 00:19:53.42\00:19:55.86 In fact, he came here and had another disease 00:19:55.89\00:19:57.76 he didn't even realize he had. 00:19:57.79\00:19:59.13 You were telling me about this. 00:19:59.16\00:20:00.50 He had a little bit of borderline diabetes. 00:20:00.53\00:20:02.76 Now, what's borderline diabetes? 00:20:02.80\00:20:04.70 It means that your fasting blood sugar 00:20:04.73\00:20:07.20 is above 100. 00:20:07.24\00:20:08.57 Okay. 00:20:08.60\00:20:09.94 Between 100 and 125 00:20:09.97\00:20:11.31 is considered borderline diabetes. 00:20:11.34\00:20:13.34 Can you live in that state? 00:20:13.38\00:20:15.34 Sure. Without ever getting diabetes? 00:20:15.38\00:20:17.65 Well, no, you will start to continue to progress, 00:20:17.68\00:20:20.58 but people are there and lived there for sometime 00:20:20.62\00:20:24.32 without even knowing it. 00:20:24.35\00:20:25.69 How were you able to determine that A1C or was it...? 00:20:25.72\00:20:29.26 Actually just through simple lab work. 00:20:29.29\00:20:30.69 Oh, okay. 00:20:30.73\00:20:32.06 We didn't have to do hemoglobin A1C, 00:20:32.09\00:20:33.43 just simple lab work. 00:20:33.46\00:20:34.80 His fasting blood sugar was between 100 and 125. 00:20:34.83\00:20:37.93 Isn't that interesting? 00:20:37.97\00:20:39.30 And so, we implemented lifestyle changes. 00:20:39.33\00:20:43.07 We showed him how to do things. 00:20:43.10\00:20:44.87 We had him drinking more water, getting more exercise, 00:20:44.91\00:20:49.28 changing what he ate, changing when he ate, 00:20:49.31\00:20:53.05 and changing what he drank. 00:20:53.08\00:20:54.98 Amen. And that made a big difference. 00:20:55.02\00:20:57.19 Yeah. 00:20:57.22\00:20:58.55 He told me that he liked a lot of soda 00:20:58.59\00:21:01.32 before he got here. 00:21:01.36\00:21:02.69 Oh, the soda. 00:21:02.72\00:21:04.66 Boy, that has a lot of sugar. Yeah, it can be. 00:21:04.69\00:21:07.96 And so, 00:21:08.00\00:21:09.60 simple things had repeat lab work 00:21:09.63\00:21:12.40 just came back. 00:21:12.43\00:21:13.77 His numbers are normal. Praise God. 00:21:13.80\00:21:16.00 Isn't it amazing? Praise God. 00:21:16.04\00:21:17.37 No, wonderful I just wanted to hear that. 00:21:17.41\00:21:19.01 It is. 00:21:19.04\00:21:20.38 So he's probably still...' 00:21:20.41\00:21:22.04 cause he said he's still taking medication, 00:21:22.08\00:21:25.75 I presume that's for the depression. 00:21:25.78\00:21:28.55 Yes. 00:21:28.58\00:21:29.92 And is he taking any other medications? 00:21:29.95\00:21:32.39 Or you got him off of everything else? 00:21:32.42\00:21:33.76 I think we've gotten him off of just about everything else. 00:21:33.79\00:21:36.29 Isn't that amazing! Yeah. Yeah. 00:21:36.32\00:21:38.36 Praise God. Amen. Amen. 00:21:38.39\00:21:40.00 And he's very excited about that. 00:21:40.03\00:21:41.43 Yeah. 00:21:41.46\00:21:42.80 Now, he's gonna be out in a mission field. 00:21:42.83\00:21:46.00 Is that problem for these missionaries 00:21:46.03\00:21:48.64 as far as what to eat? 00:21:48.67\00:21:52.01 His ministry takes him abroad a lot, 00:21:52.04\00:21:55.48 takes him to China and other countries. 00:21:55.51\00:21:57.35 And we were talking about that just today. 00:21:57.38\00:22:01.48 And he has some plans in mind 00:22:01.52\00:22:04.15 of how he can continue this lifestyle 00:22:04.19\00:22:07.32 even when he's out of the country. 00:22:07.36\00:22:09.12 Okay. 00:22:09.16\00:22:10.49 And so, we've tried to address 00:22:10.53\00:22:11.86 what some of the potential scenarios 00:22:11.89\00:22:13.73 are and some things that he can do. 00:22:13.76\00:22:15.73 He also travels within the country 00:22:15.76\00:22:17.57 which will make it easier for him 00:22:17.60\00:22:18.93 to continue the lifestyle. 00:22:18.97\00:22:20.44 But we're really trying to equip him 00:22:20.47\00:22:22.70 with the right tools 00:22:22.74\00:22:24.07 so when he leaves here, he can be successful. 00:22:24.11\00:22:25.91 I know we take our guests down to a restaurant, 00:22:25.94\00:22:29.48 and we show them how to eat in restaurants, 00:22:29.51\00:22:31.61 what to order and how to order, etc. 00:22:31.65\00:22:33.85 Yes. And so that helps a great deal? 00:22:33.88\00:22:36.02 Absolutely. 00:22:36.05\00:22:37.39 I've had a number of people thank us or thank me 00:22:37.42\00:22:40.29 which I don't go on those trips, 00:22:40.32\00:22:41.99 but nonetheless they do... 00:22:42.02\00:22:43.49 Yes. 00:22:43.53\00:22:44.86 About the great experience 00:22:44.89\00:22:46.23 of being able to go to a restaurant, 00:22:46.26\00:22:48.36 any restaurant and order certain foods 00:22:48.40\00:22:51.40 knowing that they are within the guidelines 00:22:51.43\00:22:54.07 that they have learned here. 00:22:54.10\00:22:55.44 Yeah. Absolutely. 00:22:55.47\00:22:56.81 We're running out of time, Doc, but I wanna thank you. 00:22:56.84\00:22:59.74 Ron, thank you. It's been a pleasure. 00:22:59.77\00:23:02.31 Pleasure is all mine. 00:23:02.34\00:23:03.68 And thank you, friends, for joining us. 00:23:03.71\00:23:05.71 Don't go away, we have an important message 00:23:05.75\00:23:07.78 following this. 00:23:07.82\00:23:09.15 Our next deadly psychological cynic 00:23:15.32\00:23:17.53 is probably the deadliest, bitterness. 00:23:17.56\00:23:22.20 Someone once said that bitterness 00:23:22.23\00:23:24.43 is like drinking poison and expecting 00:23:24.47\00:23:27.14 someone else to die. 00:23:27.17\00:23:29.80 Often when we're hurt by another individual 00:23:29.84\00:23:32.57 or group of individuals, 00:23:32.61\00:23:34.28 we begin to think excessively about that situation. 00:23:34.31\00:23:38.48 We suffer in an emotional wound 00:23:38.51\00:23:40.32 and it takes time for us to process through that. 00:23:40.35\00:23:43.12 So some thinking about it is okay, 00:23:43.15\00:23:45.75 but there is a certain point where we're starting to think 00:23:45.79\00:23:48.32 about it too much. 00:23:48.36\00:23:49.69 And it begins to consume us. 00:23:49.72\00:23:51.49 And we call that rumination 00:23:51.53\00:23:53.50 when a certain situation fills our thoughts. 00:23:53.53\00:23:56.36 What often happens with people 00:23:56.40\00:23:57.90 that have fallen into bitterness 00:23:57.93\00:23:59.60 is they may end those relationships, 00:23:59.63\00:24:01.37 they may cut those off, 00:24:01.40\00:24:03.04 but as they move forward in their lives 00:24:03.07\00:24:05.04 because that bitterness is not resolved, 00:24:05.07\00:24:07.51 they will actually find another situation 00:24:07.54\00:24:09.91 that is very similar to that situation 00:24:09.94\00:24:12.71 to carry on the legacy 00:24:12.75\00:24:14.55 because they have unfinished business 00:24:14.58\00:24:16.69 so to speak. 00:24:16.72\00:24:18.05 We can potentially become really mean, angry, 00:24:18.09\00:24:21.19 negative people through bitterness. 00:24:21.22\00:24:24.56 It's very interesting, 00:24:24.59\00:24:25.93 a study was done on the affect 00:24:25.96\00:24:27.33 of all things Botox on mental health. 00:24:27.36\00:24:30.07 Can you believe it? 00:24:30.10\00:24:31.43 Botox impacts mental health, 00:24:31.47\00:24:33.23 not just 'cause it makes people think they look better 00:24:33.27\00:24:35.84 but because those expressions around the eyes, 00:24:35.87\00:24:39.44 the furrowed brow and so forth 00:24:39.47\00:24:40.81 can have a reflexive effect on our psyche, 00:24:40.84\00:24:44.41 on our emotional life. 00:24:44.45\00:24:46.11 So these individuals were given Botox 00:24:46.15\00:24:48.28 around their eyes and it was found that 47% 00:24:48.32\00:24:51.79 of their depressive symptoms 00:24:51.82\00:24:53.96 were relieved over a 16-week period. 00:24:53.99\00:24:57.03 The replacement for bitterness, it's very simple, forgiveness. 00:24:57.06\00:25:01.90 Let me tell you a story. 00:25:01.93\00:25:03.30 In 2006, a man named Charles Carl Roberts 00:25:03.33\00:25:07.50 walked into an Amish school 00:25:07.54\00:25:09.74 and shot five Amish school girls 00:25:09.77\00:25:12.34 in a cold blood. 00:25:12.37\00:25:14.28 Then, he shot and killed himself. 00:25:14.31\00:25:16.38 The amazing thing about this story 00:25:16.41\00:25:18.28 is that the compassion from the Amish community 00:25:18.31\00:25:21.85 toward an act that would normally call forth 00:25:21.88\00:25:24.12 all the vengeance and anger of human nature, 00:25:24.15\00:25:26.76 the compassion actually flowed more freely than the blood. 00:25:26.79\00:25:31.66 Only hours after the shooting, 00:25:31.69\00:25:33.80 an Amish neighbor appeared at the Roberts home 00:25:33.83\00:25:36.60 to comfort the family. 00:25:36.63\00:25:38.73 Visits were paid to his widow, parents, and in-laws. 00:25:38.77\00:25:42.80 One Amish man spent nearly and hour 00:25:42.84\00:25:45.21 with Robert's sobbing father in his arms. 00:25:45.24\00:25:48.84 Finally, 30 Amish attended the killer's funeral. 00:25:48.88\00:25:52.81 One Amish man said, 00:25:52.85\00:25:54.18 "I don't think there's anybody here 00:25:54.22\00:25:55.68 that wants to do anything but forgive." 00:25:55.72\00:26:00.79 One of the reasons people hesitate to forgive 00:26:00.82\00:26:03.39 is that they confuse forgiveness 00:26:03.43\00:26:05.99 with other things. 00:26:06.03\00:26:07.36 Let me tell you what forgiveness is not. 00:26:07.40\00:26:09.96 Forgiveness is not excusing what that person did 00:26:10.00\00:26:13.00 nor is it approving of what they did. 00:26:13.03\00:26:15.67 Forgiveness is not reconciliation. 00:26:15.70\00:26:17.74 You don't necessarily have to enter into a relationship 00:26:17.77\00:26:20.48 with that person, that's not always safe, 00:26:20.51\00:26:22.34 not always advised. 00:26:22.38\00:26:24.11 Forgiveness and trust are related, 00:26:24.15\00:26:26.08 but they are not the same thing. 00:26:26.11\00:26:28.58 Separate forgiveness out from those things. 00:26:28.62\00:26:31.69 And define forgiveness clearly in your mind. 00:26:31.72\00:26:34.26 Forgiveness is you releasing your right 00:26:34.29\00:26:37.86 to hurt that other person the way that they hurt you. 00:26:37.89\00:26:43.43 Now, we could argue that nobody has a right to hurt anyone 00:26:43.47\00:26:46.33 under any circumstances. 00:26:46.37\00:26:48.07 But in our minds, we assume we have the right 00:26:48.10\00:26:50.51 to hurt another if they have hurt us. 00:26:50.54\00:26:52.54 Forgiveness is the voluntary releasing 00:26:52.57\00:26:55.28 of that right. 00:26:55.31\00:26:56.68 Sociologic research shows 00:26:56.71\00:26:58.71 that those who understand their own sinfulness, 00:26:58.75\00:27:02.45 their own capacity for hurting others 00:27:02.48\00:27:05.59 are actually measurably more inclined to forgive. 00:27:05.62\00:27:10.16 So if you're having trouble forgiving someone, 00:27:10.19\00:27:12.63 remember times when you've hurt another. 00:27:12.66\00:27:15.56 Karl Menninger said 00:27:15.60\00:27:17.80 that if he could convince patients 00:27:17.83\00:27:20.10 in psyche hospitals that their sins were forgiven, 00:27:20.14\00:27:23.17 75% would walk out the next day. 00:27:23.20\00:27:26.74 When we accept that we've been forgiven, 00:27:26.78\00:27:30.71 we are going to be much more inclined 00:27:30.75\00:27:33.25 to be able to forgive others. 00:27:33.28\00:27:35.08 See forgiveness is a two way street, 00:27:35.12\00:27:37.42 I receive forgiveness from God and from others 00:27:37.45\00:27:39.82 for the things that I've done 00:27:39.85\00:27:41.56 and I bestow forgiveness upon others. 00:27:41.59\00:27:44.46 I know, in some ways, 00:27:44.49\00:27:45.86 this way of life seems irrational. 00:27:45.89\00:27:48.70 We all have this justice bone inside of us, 00:27:48.73\00:27:51.43 the sense of justice, 00:27:51.47\00:27:52.80 and we feel it needs to be fulfilled. 00:27:52.83\00:27:55.14 But good council says leave that in God's hands 00:27:55.17\00:27:58.61 and chose to forgive. 00:27:58.64\00:28:00.64 It will be better for your health, 00:28:00.68\00:28:02.51 for your mental health, and for your spiritual life. 00:28:02.54\00:28:05.91
