Yeah. 00:23:12.39\00:23:14.22 Good bless you. 00:23:14.26\00:23:15.59 I'm thankful that you went through it, you know. 00:23:15.62\00:23:17.23 Well, I am thankful, you're thankful. 00:23:17.26\00:23:20.20 Folks, don't go away. 00:23:20.23\00:23:21.56 I know you're thankful for watching this. 00:23:21.60\00:23:22.93 Don't go away, we got a tip for you. 00:23:22.96\00:23:24.40 The next deadly psychological sin is worry. 00:23:29.67\00:23:32.47 It's worry. 00:23:32.51\00:23:34.21 Worry reacts to the possibility of danger 00:23:34.24\00:23:40.15 versus the probability of danger. 00:23:40.18\00:23:42.88 In psychology, we call it 'Hypervigilance' 00:23:42.92\00:23:46.65 not that vigilance is completely unnecessary, 00:23:46.69\00:23:49.12 we need to be on guard, there are dangers in the world 00:23:49.16\00:23:51.86 but worry reacts to the possibility of danger 00:23:51.89\00:23:55.83 and the possibility of danger is almost unlimited. 00:23:55.86\00:23:59.23 The problem with hypervigilance or worry is that 00:23:59.27\00:24:02.27 it doesn't achieve the protection 00:24:02.30\00:24:05.04 that one hopes it will achieve. 00:24:05.07\00:24:07.54 It's a known fact in abuse counseling, 00:24:07.58\00:24:09.81 counseling victims of abuse that 00:24:09.84\00:24:11.71 those that have been abused, 00:24:11.75\00:24:13.35 those that have been victimized are often re-victimized 00:24:13.38\00:24:16.65 and we think the reason for this is that 00:24:16.69\00:24:18.89 they are hypervigilant, 00:24:18.92\00:24:20.26 they're so afraid of everything 00:24:20.29\00:24:21.82 that their nervous systems literally get worn out 00:24:21.86\00:24:24.53 and they miss the actual threat 00:24:24.56\00:24:26.49 and they're not able to defend themselves against that. 00:24:26.53\00:24:29.20 "Worry is blind and cannot discern the future." 00:24:29.23\00:24:32.67 The reason we worry is that we hope it's going to help us, 00:24:32.70\00:24:35.40 predict any kind of potential threat out there 00:24:35.44\00:24:39.01 but actually it doesn't work that way at all. 00:24:39.04\00:24:41.31 It doesn't discern the future. It's blind. 00:24:41.34\00:24:44.71 So for no other reason, reject this habit of worry 00:24:44.75\00:24:47.45 because it just doesn't achieve 00:24:47.48\00:24:49.25 what you think it's going to achieve. 00:24:49.28\00:24:50.92 The replacement for worry is trust. 00:24:50.95\00:24:54.42 Now I know trust sounds like a very dangerous proposition, 00:24:54.46\00:24:59.19 particularly to some of you. 00:24:59.23\00:25:00.83 Those of you whose trust has been horribly violated 00:25:00.86\00:25:03.73 but it's worse for you to never trust 00:25:03.77\00:25:07.27 than it is for you to distrust. 00:25:07.30\00:25:09.90 So I suggest that you learn to trust 00:25:09.94\00:25:12.84 but that you learn to trust intelligently. 00:25:12.87\00:25:16.68 All institutions, all social entities 00:25:16.71\00:25:21.18 whether it be a family or a church 00:25:21.22\00:25:23.49 or even a society, function on the basis of trust. 00:25:23.52\00:25:28.22 When trust falls away from a given society, 00:25:28.26\00:25:30.93 that society makes a cultural descent. 00:25:30.96\00:25:35.20 A society cannot prosper 00:25:35.23\00:25:37.07 when there's no trust between the members of society, 00:25:37.10\00:25:40.40 the same thing is true to smaller societies like 00:25:40.44\00:25:42.70 families and friendships. 00:25:42.74\00:25:44.84 Trust provides a foundation 00:25:44.87\00:25:46.91 for healthy functioning in relationships 00:25:46.94\00:25:49.78 and healthy functioning in individuals as well. 00:25:49.81\00:25:52.85 What we find in psychology is that 00:25:52.88\00:25:54.52 there's a little chemical in your brain called oxytocin 00:25:54.55\00:25:57.59 that is kind of the mediator for trust, 00:25:57.62\00:25:59.69 it's the thing that's working in your brain 00:25:59.72\00:26:02.12 when you're forming a trust bond. 00:26:02.16\00:26:04.49 Let me read some information to you about oxytocin. 00:26:04.53\00:26:08.33 "Research shows that injected oxytocin 00:26:08.36\00:26:11.53 increases the willingness to take social risks." 00:26:11.57\00:26:15.27 So if I were to inject you with oxytocin, 00:26:15.30\00:26:17.41 this little chemical in your brain, 00:26:17.44\00:26:19.11 then you would be more inclined to talk to a stranger 00:26:19.14\00:26:22.44 or more inclined to form a new friendship. 00:26:22.48\00:26:25.81 There's research on loneliness and how it relates to trust. 00:26:25.85\00:26:30.05 "Loneliness was negatively correlated with each measure 00:26:30.09\00:26:33.22 of trust beliefs and trusting behavior." 00:26:33.25\00:26:36.99 The bottom line is that trust is worth the risk. 00:26:37.03\00:26:41.00 Even though it does bring certain risk factors, in fact, 00:26:41.03\00:26:44.97 there is no such thing as trust without risk, 00:26:45.00\00:26:49.20 you do away with risk, you do away with trust. 00:26:49.24\00:26:52.51 But even though there's a risk involved in trusting, 00:26:52.54\00:26:55.01 it is worth the risk, particularly, 00:26:55.04\00:26:57.95 if you learn how to choose your friends well 00:26:57.98\00:27:00.95 and how to choose confidants well 00:27:00.98\00:27:03.52 and how to conduct your life in an intelligent manner, 00:27:03.55\00:27:06.86 what you will find is you'll be disappointed 00:27:06.89\00:27:09.32 in other people less and less 00:27:09.36\00:27:11.29 and that those trust bonds will build 00:27:11.33\00:27:13.60 and that the trust itself will form the foundation 00:27:13.63\00:27:16.77 for healthy functioning in you and in your relationships. 00:27:16.80\00:27:20.87 Well, friends, that's it for today 00:27:20.90\00:27:23.07 but join us next week for another episode. 00:27:23.10\00:27:26.01 In the mean time, 00:27:26.04\00:27:27.38 pick up the phone and give us a call 00:27:27.41\00:27:29.04 at 1-800-525-9192. 00:27:29.08\00:27:33.72 Mention the NEWSTART NOW program 00:27:33.75\00:27:36.52 and receive the NEWSTART special. 00:27:36.55\00:27:38.89
