Tell us about that? 00:05:11.51\00:05:12.97 Okay, yes, so after the original consult 00:05:13.01\00:05:15.94 with the doctor, we went through a list 00:05:15.98\00:05:17.65 and we wrote the few that we're gonna keep 00:05:17.68\00:05:20.72 and the once that we're gonna take off 00:05:20.75\00:05:22.85 and we talked about reducing my prednisone. 00:05:22.88\00:05:26.49 I was already on a pretty low dose 00:05:26.52\00:05:28.72 and he cut it in half and when we cut it down 00:05:28.76\00:05:32.49 and also took my... 00:05:32.53\00:05:38.67 The other, sorry, the turmeric, turmeric. 00:05:38.70\00:05:41.37 Yes, so when he took the turmeric off 00:05:41.40\00:05:44.24 then couple of my joints blew up, 00:05:44.27\00:05:45.81 my this left, then my right, and then my ankle, 00:05:45.84\00:05:48.88 and then I felt my knee was gonna go, 00:05:48.91\00:05:51.11 and so he intervened at the point. 00:05:51.15\00:05:53.92 So that so reversed a little, so now I'm back 00:05:53.95\00:05:57.22 on that small amount of turmeric and prednisone. 00:05:57.25\00:06:01.12 And he prescribed the charcoal poultice 00:06:01.16\00:06:08.10 and it's a simple remedy with a mixture of a charcoal 00:06:08.13\00:06:13.64 and flaxseed and you apply to the joint 00:06:13.67\00:06:16.74 and it's a miracle non drug. 00:06:16.77\00:06:20.01 Isn't that amazing? It is absolutely amazing. 00:06:20.04\00:06:21.98 I was a little cynical about such a simple remedy 00:06:22.01\00:06:26.61 but I'm a huge believer right now. 00:06:26.65\00:06:28.52 We've seen stories, 00:06:28.55\00:06:30.35 people come here with various kinds 00:06:30.39\00:06:33.25 of sicknesses or even infections 00:06:33.29\00:06:36.39 and that charcoal just pulls it out. 00:06:36.42\00:06:38.49 Yeah, it's amazing. 00:06:38.53\00:06:39.86 It's just amazing. Yes. 00:06:39.89\00:06:41.36 I had injured my shoulder like I told you, 00:06:41.40\00:06:44.67 and the gals were doing some poultice on my shoulder. 00:06:44.70\00:06:48.44 Every time they did, it felt better. 00:06:48.47\00:06:50.51 They were reducing that heat and inflammation. 00:06:50.54\00:06:53.07 Yeah. Yeah. 00:06:53.11\00:06:54.88 So how many pounds have you lost? 00:06:54.91\00:06:57.71 Eighteen pounds so far. Eighteen pounds? 00:06:57.75\00:06:59.71 Eighteen pounds, yes, 00:06:59.75\00:07:01.08 a couple of inches off the belly as well 00:07:01.12\00:07:03.25 and that feels really good, but what feels really good 00:07:03.28\00:07:05.89 is that it feels sustainable, my appetite is down, 00:07:05.92\00:07:09.46 I am eating well. 00:07:09.49\00:07:11.23 And just I'm really excited, the next 18 pounds 00:07:11.26\00:07:14.60 is probably gonna be even easier than this. 00:07:14.63\00:07:17.13 Yes, yes, so who's at home waiting for you? 00:07:17.17\00:07:22.24 My two cats. Your two cats. 00:07:22.27\00:07:24.21 My two cats. They're waiting for me. 00:07:24.24\00:07:25.84 Are you gonna have them go vegan too? 00:07:25.87\00:07:27.51 No, probably not. Okay. 00:07:27.54\00:07:30.18 No, they eat rats for me, and I like that. 00:07:30.21\00:07:33.42 Okay. 00:07:33.45\00:07:34.78 Well, Dr. Lukas used to have a vegan dog. 00:07:34.82\00:07:37.15 Oh, yeah. Yeah, he loved ripe old age. 00:07:37.19\00:07:40.12 I don't know what happen to him. 00:07:40.16\00:07:41.49 Yeah, these are not pets, these are working cats. 00:07:41.52\00:07:44.23 Oh, okay, they get the rats. 00:07:44.26\00:07:46.19 Absolutely. Okay. 00:07:46.23\00:07:47.56 We don't want to make them vegan. 00:07:47.60\00:07:48.93 No. 00:07:48.96\00:07:50.30 Not if they're catching rats. No. 00:07:50.33\00:07:51.90 So are you gonna have any difficulty 00:07:51.93\00:07:56.04 keeping the program as you've learned it here? 00:07:56.07\00:07:59.77 No, I don't think so. I think I'm... 00:07:59.81\00:08:01.64 And I've talked to a lot of people 00:08:01.68\00:08:04.61 who are also on the program 00:08:04.65\00:08:06.28 and they're all gonna take it their own, they understand it, 00:08:06.31\00:08:09.52 so it's a lot of detailed information 00:08:09.55\00:08:13.62 and we all process in different ways, 00:08:13.66\00:08:15.46 and we've talked about the challenges 00:08:15.49\00:08:17.23 that we're gonna have, the coffee and so 00:08:17.26\00:08:21.40 butter on toast and some of those eggs challenges. 00:08:21.43\00:08:24.47 So everyone I think is gonna adopt 00:08:24.50\00:08:27.30 the part of the program so seriously 00:08:27.34\00:08:29.54 but we're gonna tweak it to accommodate our needs 00:08:29.57\00:08:34.84 and wants and our own things that makes our life better. 00:08:34.88\00:08:41.32 Well, you know, you are fortunate. 00:08:41.35\00:08:42.68 You live 10 minutes away from here. 00:08:42.72\00:08:44.59 You can come and visit anytime. The people, yes. 00:10:33.29\00:10:34.86 So in the last 18 days I've spent 00:10:34.90\00:10:37.63 with probably 40-50 people, you know, 00:10:37.67\00:10:40.64 a dozen to 20 people who work here at the institute, 00:10:40.67\00:10:45.14 and I think our class was smallish, 00:10:45.17\00:10:47.54 maybe about 18 I think. 00:10:47.58\00:10:49.48 And so we all had time to learn about each other and bond, 00:10:49.51\00:10:55.05 and it's just been a great experience, so yes. 00:10:55.08\00:10:58.39 Definitely the people, I would. 00:10:58.42\00:10:59.79 I came for the people and ended up 00:10:59.82\00:11:01.92 learning how to cook. 00:11:01.96\00:11:04.19 Well, I want to take this time just to thank you 00:11:04.23\00:11:06.90 for coming here and sharing. 00:11:06.93\00:11:09.06 I know that you are gonna inspire people 00:11:09.10\00:11:12.03 who are watching you now, and I wish you well 00:11:12.07\00:11:15.80 and we are gonna see you soon, I hope. 00:11:15.84\00:11:18.97 Okay, absolutely. 00:11:19.01\00:11:20.48 And maybe I can just add just one small experience 00:11:20.51\00:11:23.21 this morning. 00:11:23.24\00:11:24.91 I had my massage and I laid on the table face down 00:11:24.95\00:11:28.98 and I could breath. 00:11:29.02\00:11:31.95 Three weeks ago I could barely breathe 00:11:31.99\00:11:33.92 because my belly was pushing up on my lungs 00:11:33.96\00:11:37.26 and the difference this morning was dramatic and that was a... 00:11:37.29\00:11:42.93 It feels pretty good. Thank you for sharing that. 00:11:42.96\00:11:45.27 You are welcome. 00:11:45.30\00:11:46.63 And thank you, friends, don't go away 00:11:46.67\00:11:48.20 'cause Dr. Roger Gallant will be right with us. 00:11:48.24\00:11:53.68 When we look at the health status 00:11:53.71\00:11:55.14 of Americans today, it's alarming to see that 00:11:55.18\00:11:57.81 60% are either overweight or obese. 00:11:57.85\00:12:00.98 In addition, diseases such as Type 2 diabetes, 00:12:06.25\00:12:09.12 cancer and heart disorders are the leading cause 00:12:09.16\00:12:11.69 of so many complications and deaths every year. 00:12:11.73\00:12:15.06 Could it have something to do with what we eat? 00:12:19.13\00:12:21.67 After all, every one in four Americans 00:12:21.70\00:12:24.41 visits a fast food restaurant daily, 00:12:24.44\00:12:26.51 and with such easy access to quick fix foods, 00:12:26.54\00:12:30.11 we tend to forget the poor health value 00:12:30.15\00:12:32.18 those foods actually offer. 00:12:32.21\00:12:35.02 Maybe it's the sedentary lifestyle, 00:12:35.05\00:12:36.89 and lack of exercise that we've become 00:12:36.92\00:12:38.82 so accustomed to as a media dependant world. 00:12:38.85\00:12:42.32 Whatever the cause of these diseases, 00:12:42.36\00:12:44.16 a solution has arrived. 00:12:44.19\00:12:48.46 The NEWSTART Lifestyle Center offers enriching program 00:12:48.50\00:12:51.93 where patients can get a healing of mind, 00:12:51.97\00:12:54.40 body, and soul. 00:12:54.44\00:12:55.77 Located in the outskirts of Sacramento, 00:12:55.80\00:12:58.21 the NEWSTART Center is situated on the beautiful campus 00:12:58.24\00:13:01.41 of Weimar Center of Health and Education 00:13:01.44\00:13:04.28 with scenic walking and hiking trails all around. 00:13:04.31\00:13:07.85 With a whole plant foods eating whole motto, 00:13:07.88\00:13:11.22 the NEWSTART Center promotes a healthy plant-based diet 00:13:11.25\00:13:14.56 with an emphasis on natural foods. 00:13:14.59\00:13:16.96 The NEWSTART staff are made up of 00:13:16.99\00:13:18.99 California board certified nurses, doctors, 00:13:19.03\00:13:22.50 dieticians, and therapists who work together 00:13:22.53\00:13:25.33 to assist each patient personally. 00:13:25.37\00:13:27.80 The staff are dedicated to each patient's success 00:13:27.84\00:13:30.54 in the program, and are always there 00:13:30.57\00:13:32.54 to guide, advise, and encourage. 00:13:32.57\00:13:35.31 In addition to a healthy lifestyle, 00:13:35.34\00:13:37.45 NEWSTART also promotes a healthy exercise routine. 00:13:37.48\00:13:40.58 You're both in sequence, that's good, all right. 00:13:40.62\00:13:43.32 As part of the balance program, there is much opportunity 00:13:43.35\00:13:46.49 to get in the fair share of physical activity 00:13:46.52\00:13:48.99 from utilizing our fitness center 00:13:49.02\00:13:51.16 to taking a stroll around the peaceful grounds 00:13:51.19\00:13:53.80 of Weimer. 00:13:53.83\00:13:55.16 It's amazing what a NEWSTART can do for you. 00:13:55.20\00:13:58.53 Welcome back, friends, and in our studio, Dr. Gallant. 00:13:58.57\00:14:01.80 Good to see you. Good to see you, Ron. 00:14:01.84\00:14:03.94 You know, every time I look at you I say, 00:14:03.97\00:14:07.04 "Well, there's a handsome young man." 00:14:07.08\00:14:08.84 You're too kind. 00:14:08.88\00:14:11.45 But you are young, we're just talking about that. 00:14:11.48\00:14:13.82 Yes, I am young. 00:14:13.85\00:14:15.45 Praise the Lord, He's keeping me young, 00:14:15.48\00:14:17.29 keeping me healthy. 00:14:17.32\00:14:18.75 Another kind of a joke we are sharing, 00:14:18.79\00:14:22.02 it's good to grow old because if you don't, 00:14:22.06\00:14:24.69 you are not gonna be here. 00:14:24.73\00:14:26.06 Amen. That's right. Amen. 00:14:26.09\00:14:27.50 I want to talk about Marty. Yes. 00:14:27.53\00:14:29.73 Marty has had some very unusual experiences 00:14:29.76\00:14:34.87 and I'd like you to share with our guests, 00:14:34.90\00:14:37.71 those viewers, what happened? 00:14:37.74\00:14:41.64 You know, I really appreciated Marty, 00:14:41.68\00:14:44.15 the time we spent together has been a blessing. 00:14:44.18\00:14:46.78 Marty has a history of rheumatoid arthritis, 00:14:46.82\00:14:51.09 and he says that occasionally he'll get these flare-ups. 00:14:51.12\00:14:55.32 And while he was here... 00:14:55.36\00:14:57.99 Now the flare-ups are aching pains... 00:14:58.03\00:15:02.00 Yes. Okay. 00:15:02.03\00:15:03.37 He gets pain, he gets joint swelling, 00:15:03.40\00:15:05.73 he gets stiffness, hard to move and so on. 00:15:05.77\00:15:09.30 And he says he typically gets them once or twice a year. 00:15:09.34\00:15:14.54 While he was here, he was doing more exercise 00:15:14.58\00:15:17.41 and started to notice some symptoms coming on. 00:15:17.45\00:15:21.22 One other things we did when he first came here, 00:15:21.25\00:15:23.42 he was, he's on chronic prednisone, 00:15:23.45\00:15:26.05 and prednisone is a steroid, it's not always the best thing 00:15:26.09\00:15:28.92 to be taking all the time. 00:15:28.96\00:15:30.53 So we were trying, he was doing well when he came. 00:15:30.56\00:15:32.76 We were trying to see if we could just 00:15:32.79\00:15:34.13 lower it a little bit, and he was on a very low dose, 00:15:34.16\00:15:36.13 so we cut it in half. 00:15:36.16\00:15:37.67 And that may have contributed to some of this, 00:15:37.70\00:15:41.80 and also the more activity may have contributed 00:15:41.84\00:15:44.11 to this as well. 00:15:44.14\00:15:45.74 But what we found is 00:15:45.77\00:15:47.34 he was starting to get some pain and stiffness 00:15:47.38\00:15:49.41 first in his left elbow and so he, 00:15:49.44\00:15:54.52 we started talking about it and I said to him, 00:15:54.55\00:15:57.59 I made a suggestion that was a little unusual, 00:15:57.62\00:16:00.26 I said, "Why don't we try and put 00:16:00.29\00:16:01.89 a charcoal poultice on there." 00:16:01.92\00:16:04.79 He kind of looked at me twice. 00:16:04.83\00:16:07.06 He was worried. Yeah. 00:16:07.10\00:16:08.63 He say, oh, what kind of a doctor I have, 00:16:08.66\00:16:10.83 get the charcoal? 00:16:10.87\00:16:12.30 That's right, he was a little skeptical. 00:16:12.33\00:16:14.00 Yeah. 00:16:14.04\00:16:15.37 But he was willing to try, he was a good sport about it. 00:16:15.40\00:16:18.44 We also increased his... 00:16:18.47\00:16:21.01 Well, at that point we haven't even increased 00:16:21.04\00:16:22.38 his prednisone back up. 00:16:22.41\00:16:23.88 We put some charcoal on there 00:16:23.91\00:16:26.75 and he takes turmeric from time to time 00:16:26.78\00:16:28.85 which is a good natural anti-inflammatory. 00:16:28.88\00:16:32.19 So he started taking that again. 00:16:32.22\00:16:35.02 And what we found is that 00:16:35.06\00:16:38.89 he started to get a little more pain, 00:16:38.93\00:16:41.46 moved to this elbow and this wrist, 00:16:41.50\00:16:44.17 so we put poultices on those three areas 00:16:44.20\00:16:47.80 and gradually they started to improve. 00:16:47.84\00:16:51.04 They reversed the direction they were going in, 00:16:51.07\00:16:53.17 usually once it starts, they progress 00:16:53.21\00:16:55.34 to a certain point. 00:16:55.38\00:16:56.81 And he said he was happy to see that this has happened 00:16:56.85\00:16:59.15 and it slowed down. 00:16:59.18\00:17:01.28 Then he started getting some symptoms in his knee. 00:17:01.32\00:17:05.02 And in the leg? In the leg. 00:17:05.05\00:17:07.12 And you shared, tell the folks what you shared with me 00:17:07.16\00:17:11.43 before we got started about how long that one last? 00:17:11.46\00:17:14.26 Well, he says that when he starts getting symptoms 00:17:14.30\00:17:16.56 in his knee, it gets very bad and it usually puts him 00:17:16.60\00:17:20.34 out of commission for two to three weeks. 00:17:20.37\00:17:23.44 And we put a charcoal poultice on there, 00:17:23.47\00:17:26.68 we kept praying about it and he increased 00:17:26.71\00:17:31.21 his prednisone back to the low dose 00:17:31.25\00:17:33.11 that he'd been on when he first came, 00:17:33.15\00:17:35.15 and he also took another medicine 00:17:35.18\00:17:36.65 that he occasionally takes little bit of colchicine. 00:17:36.69\00:17:39.75 But today he told me that 00:17:39.79\00:17:41.92 he doesn't have any charcoal on. 00:17:41.96\00:17:44.13 He says he feels great. 00:17:44.16\00:17:46.80 He is a believer now in the benefits of charcoal. 00:17:46.83\00:17:51.07 A believer, right? 00:17:51.10\00:17:52.77 And you know, there is a lot of believers out there 00:17:52.80\00:17:55.47 watching this program right now. 00:17:55.50\00:17:58.21 You know they're riddled with arthritis, 00:17:58.24\00:18:01.61 and they live in pain. 00:18:01.64\00:18:03.08 I get these calls all day long. 00:18:03.11\00:18:06.15 Doctor, are you saying that people with arthritis 00:18:06.18\00:18:09.55 should be coming to our NEWSTART program? 00:18:09.58\00:18:11.75 I am saying that I believe what we do 00:18:11.79\00:18:13.96 can put your body in the best condition 00:18:13.99\00:18:15.86 and we have seen a lot of people with arthritis 00:18:15.89\00:18:18.56 who have had significant improvements 00:18:18.59\00:18:20.50 in their pain. 00:18:20.53\00:18:21.86 Let me share two other quick things 00:18:21.90\00:18:23.50 with our guests. 00:18:23.53\00:18:26.40 Arthritis oftentimes is related 00:18:26.43\00:18:30.11 to dehydration. 00:18:30.14\00:18:35.14 I have seen some evidence in the literature 00:18:35.18\00:18:37.78 that says that if a patients is chronically dehydrated, 00:18:37.81\00:18:40.95 they can have joint pain that mimics arthritis 00:18:40.98\00:18:45.82 which would make you think that you have arthritis, 00:18:45.85\00:18:48.02 but maybe you don't. 00:18:48.06\00:18:49.69 What causes that, just because of inflammation? 00:18:49.72\00:18:52.63 Well, what happens is if we're dehydrated 00:18:52.66\00:18:54.90 the body will rob liquid, will rob water 00:18:54.93\00:18:58.73 from the areas that are considered 00:18:58.77\00:19:00.84 "non-essential". 00:19:00.87\00:19:04.24 So the essential organs get the liquid. 00:19:04.27\00:19:07.98 So your brain, you liver, your heart, your kidneys, 00:19:08.01\00:19:11.05 those essential organs will stay hydrated 00:19:11.08\00:19:14.22 but it may rob liquid from, may rob fluid from your joints. 00:19:14.25\00:19:18.32 I'm getting thirsty. 00:19:18.35\00:19:20.06 Just talking about it, that's right. 00:19:20.09\00:19:21.52 Just talking about it, I'm going wow! 00:19:21.56\00:19:22.89 That's right. I never knew that. 00:19:22.92\00:19:25.33 The other thing is you want to have 00:19:25.36\00:19:28.70 low impact moderate exercise. 00:19:28.73\00:19:32.73 As people get out and exercise they will find that 00:19:32.77\00:19:35.54 their stiffness and their arthritic type pains 00:19:35.57\00:19:38.64 start to go away. 00:19:38.67\00:19:40.51 So increase in your hydration and increase in your exercise 00:19:40.54\00:19:44.15 typically makes people start to feel better. 00:19:44.18\00:19:47.22 Well, wouldn't we bring the lifestyle as far as 00:19:47.25\00:19:53.19 what we eat into that phase as well, I mean, plants, 00:19:53.22\00:19:57.96 don't they in fact do something to the joints that... 00:19:57.99\00:20:00.80 Absolutely, absolutely. 00:20:00.83\00:20:02.86 A plant-based diet, eating simple plant-based foods 00:20:02.90\00:20:06.53 is better for your overall body health 00:20:06.57\00:20:09.37 including your joints than any other type of diet. 00:20:09.40\00:20:12.77 Amen. Amen. 00:20:12.81\00:20:14.71 And it's 11 years this August for me... 00:20:14.74\00:20:17.51 Fantastic. 00:20:17.55\00:20:19.11 And I've been through a lot of changes. 00:20:19.15\00:20:21.38 This is not about me, this is about Damian 00:20:21.42\00:20:23.25 and our viewers... 00:20:23.28\00:20:24.62 No, this is about Marty. 00:20:24.65\00:20:25.99 I mean Marty, Damian, I got Damian on the brain, 00:20:26.02\00:20:28.22 but Marty. 00:20:28.26\00:20:29.72 And the viewers because I know we've got the attention 00:20:29.76\00:20:33.43 of many people that have arthritis. 00:20:33.46\00:20:36.43 And, friends, if you have arthritis, 00:20:36.46\00:20:38.83 you could pick up the phone and give us a call right now. 00:20:38.87\00:20:41.77 Call 800-525-9192, ask for me, Ron, 00:20:41.80\00:20:47.94 and I'll be glad to get you here 00:20:47.98\00:20:49.81 as quickly as we can. 00:20:49.84\00:20:51.35 But more about Marty, what's the prognosis now? 00:20:51.38\00:20:55.42 What is he gonna do? 00:20:55.45\00:20:56.79 Well, he is doing very, very well. 00:20:56.82\00:20:58.79 He has lost weight, he's feeling better 00:20:58.82\00:21:01.59 than he has ever felt. 00:21:01.62\00:21:02.96 In fact, Marty told me at our last appointment 00:21:02.99\00:21:07.43 that he believes he has dodged a bullet. 00:21:07.46\00:21:10.37 Yeah. 00:21:10.40\00:21:11.80 He has dodged a bullet. Wow! 00:21:11.83\00:21:13.84 That's the biggie. Isn't that wonderful? 00:21:20.74\00:21:22.58 So, now he is doing very well, he... 00:21:22.61\00:21:25.45 And I really think that he is gonna be very successful, 00:21:25.48\00:21:29.52 he is committed to making the changes, 00:21:29.55\00:21:31.75 he is committed to changing his lifestyle, 00:21:31.79\00:21:34.46 he's seen that he can do this. 00:21:34.49\00:21:35.92 We've decreased his medications, 00:21:35.96\00:21:38.26 and I really believe that he is gonna do well. 00:21:38.29\00:21:41.76 Doctor, were there any other reasons 00:21:41.80\00:21:44.10 that you know of as a medical practitioner, 00:21:44.13\00:21:51.01 why he should have come here, I mean, 00:21:51.04\00:21:54.18 couldn't he have done this at home or? 00:21:54.21\00:21:56.68 Well, it's sometimes harder to know exactly what to change 00:21:56.71\00:22:01.92 and how to change it on your own. 00:22:01.95\00:22:04.29 That's why I always recommend that 00:22:04.32\00:22:06.02 if you're gonna make changes to your lifestyle 00:22:06.05\00:22:08.72 and especially your medications, 00:22:08.76\00:22:10.49 that you have some supervision from somebody 00:22:10.53\00:22:12.43 who has been through this before 00:22:12.46\00:22:14.00 and knows sort of what to expect. 00:22:14.03\00:22:17.43 And so Marty was appreciative of that 00:22:17.47\00:22:20.14 because we were able to do some things 00:22:20.17\00:22:22.90 that got his body kick started to losing weight 00:22:22.94\00:22:26.78 and to changing his metabolism, and he's able to walk now 00:22:26.81\00:22:31.28 more than he used to in the past. 00:22:31.31\00:22:34.05 And he doesn't get a short of breath. 00:22:34.08\00:22:36.69 Overall he is just feeling a lot better. 00:22:36.72\00:22:38.82 Doctor, I want to thank you for coming. 00:22:38.85\00:22:41.32 God bless you. Thank you, Ron. 00:22:41.36\00:22:42.69 And continue your good work and thank you, friends, 00:22:42.72\00:22:45.36 don't go away, we have a tip for you. 00:22:45.39\00:22:47.13 The next deadly psychological sin is self pity, 00:22:54.50\00:22:58.27 and I have a personal experience 00:22:58.31\00:23:00.68 with self pity. 00:23:00.71\00:23:02.04 In fact with my kind of artistic temperament 00:23:02.08\00:23:04.75 and my tendency toward depression, 00:23:04.78\00:23:07.32 I have raised self pity to an art form 00:23:07.35\00:23:09.98 at various points in my life. 00:23:10.02\00:23:12.05 And I've repented of the sin of self pity 00:23:12.09\00:23:14.22 and I've learned a better way. 00:23:14.26\00:23:15.59 So I want to share that with you. 00:23:15.62\00:23:17.03 But first I want to share with you 00:23:17.06\00:23:18.59 what science says about self pity. 00:23:18.63\00:23:21.10 Self pity has been correlated with depression, 00:23:21.13\00:23:24.40 with what we call externality beliefs, 00:23:24.43\00:23:27.37 the belief that everything that affects me 00:23:27.40\00:23:29.74 is happening outside of me, that I have no power. 00:23:29.77\00:23:33.64 Self pity is correlated with internalized anger, 00:23:33.68\00:23:37.45 increased rumination thinking over and over and over 00:23:37.48\00:23:40.58 and over about things, ruminating on things. 00:23:40.62\00:23:43.72 Self pity is correlated with loneliness 00:23:43.75\00:23:46.35 and with distrust. 00:23:46.39\00:23:48.92 Self pity is founded on the assumption 00:23:48.96\00:23:52.29 that "I am a victim" 00:23:52.33\00:23:55.63 that foundation needs to change in order for us 00:23:55.66\00:23:58.93 to get over with the self pity thing. 00:23:58.97\00:24:01.07 We have to move from what is called 00:24:01.10\00:24:03.34 an "external locus of control" 00:24:03.37\00:24:05.97 toward "internal locus of control". 00:24:06.01\00:24:08.41 An external locus of control sees everything 00:24:08.44\00:24:11.71 that happens to me as being in the power of things 00:24:11.75\00:24:15.28 outside of me, life just kind of happens. 00:24:15.32\00:24:18.02 But in internal locus of control says, 00:24:18.05\00:24:21.42 "What can I do about the things that happen to me?" 00:24:21.46\00:24:24.99 I'm one of those people 00:24:25.03\00:24:26.66 who have a number of mysterious, 00:24:26.70\00:24:30.90 difficult to define illnesses that cause me a lot of pain 00:24:30.93\00:24:34.67 but don't end up killing me off. 00:24:34.70\00:24:36.94 Sometimes I wish they would. 00:24:36.97\00:24:38.97 When this first started happening, 00:24:39.01\00:24:40.48 I was just in my early 30s 00:24:40.51\00:24:42.14 and the first mysterious illness 00:24:42.18\00:24:43.98 that came upon me catapulted me 00:24:44.01\00:24:46.38 I could say into an abyss of self pity, 00:24:46.41\00:24:49.08 it went on for months and months and months. 00:24:49.12\00:24:51.99 But ultimately I got a handle on things, 00:24:52.02\00:24:54.06 and I realized that the way that I was processing 00:24:54.09\00:24:57.03 what was happening to me was making it worst 00:24:57.06\00:24:59.36 instead of better. 00:24:59.39\00:25:00.80 Recently I had another health problem develop. 00:25:00.83\00:25:03.37 But this time I knew the pitfall of self pity 00:25:03.40\00:25:07.27 and I didn't fall into that slough of despond 00:25:07.30\00:25:10.41 yet another time. 00:25:10.44\00:25:11.77 This time instead, I thought, "What can I do 00:25:11.81\00:25:15.28 to manage this problem?" 00:25:15.31\00:25:16.64 And I have to say comparing those two approaches, 00:25:16.68\00:25:19.05 I really like the second one a lot better. 00:25:19.08\00:25:21.42 The replacement for self pity is "responsibility taking". 00:25:21.45\00:25:25.72 You know, for some reason human beings responsibility 00:25:25.75\00:25:29.26 taking mechanism is off. 00:25:29.29\00:25:31.59 We either tend to blame other people for our stuff 00:25:31.63\00:25:35.80 or we take up on ourselves the blame that belongs to them. 00:25:35.83\00:25:40.94 It's a sign of maturity 00:25:40.97\00:25:44.31 when we can accurately take appropriate responsibility 00:25:44.34\00:25:47.98 for our situation. 00:25:48.01\00:25:49.41 So I recommend that the first thing you do 00:25:49.44\00:25:51.55 in taking responsibility is you list five things 00:25:51.58\00:25:55.02 that might help your current situation, 00:25:55.05\00:25:56.72 write them down on paper. 00:25:56.75\00:25:59.12 Then ask an accountability partner, 00:25:59.15\00:26:01.12 someone you trust to step in and help you 00:26:01.16\00:26:04.49 take responsibility for your situation 00:26:04.53\00:26:06.53 and pursue those five options. 00:26:06.56\00:26:08.80 And finally I recommend that you learn the serenity prayer. 00:26:08.83\00:26:12.27 That you learn to say, "God grant me the serenity 00:26:12.30\00:26:16.37 to accept the things I cannot change, 00:26:16.40\00:26:18.77 the courage to change the things I can, 00:26:18.81\00:26:21.28 and the wisdom to know the difference." 00:26:21.31\00:26:23.24 Well, friends,
