This is 18 days. 00:22:00.52\00:22:02.52 Actually just two weeks between the two blood draws. 00:22:02.55\00:22:05.15 That's awesome. 00:22:05.19\00:22:06.92 You know, it's always a pleasure to have you here. 00:22:06.96\00:22:10.23 And the time always goes so fast. 00:22:10.26\00:22:13.43 We could talk like this for hours I know, 00:22:13.46\00:22:16.26 but we don't want to bore our viewers, 00:22:16.30\00:22:18.83 I want to thank you though for taking your time 00:22:18.87\00:22:21.77 and God bless you and your work here. 00:22:21.80\00:22:23.74 Thank you for helping him to get in. 00:22:23.77\00:22:25.57 You bet. 00:22:25.61\00:22:26.94 And thank you, friends, for being with us 00:22:26.98\00:22:29.38 but don't go away 00:22:29.41\00:22:30.88 because we have a tip following this. 00:22:30.91\00:22:33.21 Welcome to Ask the Doctor. 00:22:39.65\00:22:41.29 I'm Dr. David DeRose. 00:22:41.32\00:22:42.99 Today your questions are our concern, our focus. 00:22:43.02\00:22:46.93 We're going to Matthew in Washington State. 00:22:46.96\00:22:50.07 He's got a question for us, 00:22:50.10\00:22:52.03 "I'm a pretty healthy person and I eat healthy. 00:22:52.07\00:22:55.40 Should I be taking vitamins?" 00:22:55.44\00:22:58.47 Well, Matthew, this is a question 00:22:58.51\00:22:59.84 that often comes up and the real question about 00:22:59.87\00:23:02.04 vitamin supplementation is a real one. 00:23:02.08\00:23:04.65 Let's talk a little bit about it. 00:23:04.68\00:23:06.01 If you're eating lots of fruits, whole grains, 00:23:06.05\00:23:09.28 vegetables, nuts, seeds, you're getting a vast array, 00:23:09.32\00:23:13.36 not only of conventional vitamins, 00:23:13.39\00:23:15.56 but also micronutrients 00:23:15.59\00:23:17.29 and what we call phytochemicals. 00:23:17.33\00:23:19.39 The more you eat of these foods, 00:23:19.43\00:23:20.76 generally the healthier the diet. 00:23:20.80\00:23:22.63 Are there though any possible pitfalls, 00:23:22.66\00:23:25.03 any areas where you could be falling short 00:23:25.07\00:23:26.74 even with an excellent diet? 00:23:26.77\00:23:28.57 One that often comes up on the radar screen 00:23:28.60\00:23:30.51 and especially relevant for someone living 00:23:30.54\00:23:32.27 in Washington State is vitamin D. 00:23:32.31\00:23:35.34 It seems we're designed to get vitamin D from the sun. 00:23:35.38\00:23:38.45 The problem is, if you're living above 00:23:38.48\00:23:41.02 the 35 degree latitude line, 00:23:41.05\00:23:43.92 some people want to move that higher 00:23:43.95\00:23:45.52 at least in the northern hemisphere, 00:23:45.55\00:23:47.16 we use the same measures in the southern hemisphere 00:23:47.19\00:23:49.69 but then we got some problems in the winter months 00:23:49.72\00:23:52.83 with getting adequate amounts of vitamin D. 00:23:52.86\00:23:56.13 Further from the equator than 35 degrees latitude, 00:23:56.16\00:24:00.14 if you are say living in northern California 00:24:00.17\00:24:02.84 that may amount to three months in the winter 00:24:02.87\00:24:05.67 where you can't make adequate vitamin D. 00:24:05.71\00:24:07.98 As you go up further north, 00:24:08.01\00:24:09.64 you reach places like Bergen, Norway. 00:24:09.68\00:24:13.28 It's actually been studied 00:24:13.31\00:24:14.65 fully six months out of the year 00:24:14.68\00:24:16.35 they cannot make adequate vitamin D. 00:24:16.38\00:24:18.45 What do you do in this situation? 00:24:18.49\00:24:19.89 You supplement or you go in to a tanning bed. 00:24:19.92\00:24:23.49 You want to get vitamin D exposure 00:24:23.53\00:24:26.36 either through the sun 00:24:26.39\00:24:27.76 or the equivalent of sun through 00:24:27.80\00:24:29.13 what we call UVB light and if you don't get it, 00:24:29.16\00:24:32.47 you need to take that in an oral form. 00:24:32.50\00:24:34.74 Just kind of an interesting sidelight, 00:24:34.77\00:24:36.14 for many years, I lived in the state of Maine. 00:24:36.17\00:24:38.87 In Maine I found that the old Mainers 00:24:38.91\00:24:41.04 had some traditional wisdom 00:24:41.08\00:24:43.88 as far as how to deal with the winter. 00:24:43.91\00:24:46.35 They took cod liver oil. 00:24:46.38\00:24:48.92 Actually cod liver oil, 00:24:48.95\00:24:50.29 we now know is a rich source of vitamin D, 00:24:50.32\00:24:52.32 they were supplementing. 00:24:52.35\00:24:53.69 In other words with vitamin D without knowing it. 00:24:53.72\00:24:55.56 You don't need to take cod liver oil today. 00:24:55.59\00:24:57.39 I know that may not sound very appealing, 00:24:57.43\00:24:59.09 and I know you may be worried about all the toxins in fish. 00:24:59.13\00:25:02.03 Vitamin D supplements are readily available. 00:25:02.06\00:25:04.60 Anything else on the list 00:25:04.63\00:25:05.97 that commonly may not be included in the diet 00:25:06.00\00:25:08.47 that you may need to watch for, another one is vitamin B12. 00:25:08.50\00:25:12.67 B12, one of the B vitamins, 00:25:12.71\00:25:15.08 is something that many people get into trouble with. 00:25:15.11\00:25:17.58 A lot of people say, 00:25:17.61\00:25:18.95 "Well that's a vegetarian problem, 00:25:18.98\00:25:20.75 Dr. DeRose, I eat plenty of meat, milk, eggs and cheese 00:25:20.78\00:25:23.59 so I don't worry about B12." 00:25:23.62\00:25:25.29 That is not a guarantee, in fact, 00:25:25.32\00:25:27.12 if you look at absolute numbers, 00:25:27.16\00:25:28.96 the largest number of people in America 00:25:28.99\00:25:30.83 who have B12 deficiency are eating things like 00:25:30.86\00:25:33.76 milk, meat, eggs, and cheese. 00:25:33.80\00:25:35.90 And that's because as we get older 00:25:35.93\00:25:37.27 we often do not absorb B12 as well. 00:25:37.30\00:25:40.64 Truly if you are on a vegan diet, 00:25:40.67\00:25:42.37 less exposure to B12 00:25:42.40\00:25:44.34 but all of us need to be concerned about this vitamin. 00:25:44.37\00:25:46.88 If you want to know where you stand, 00:25:46.91\00:25:48.24 you can have a blood level checked, 00:25:48.28\00:25:49.61 you are able to store this B vitamin for many years. 00:25:49.64\00:25:52.18 But if you're not getting a reliable source 00:25:52.21\00:25:54.18 especially if you are on a vegetarian or vegan diet, 00:25:54.22\00:25:56.55 we do recommend a B12 supplement on a daily basis. 00:25:56.58\00:26:00.32 B12 absorb best if it's chewed or dissolved in the mouth. 00:26:00.36\00:26:04.46 Keep that in mind as well. 00:26:04.49\00:26:06.06 B12 and vitamin D some major concerns, 00:26:06.09\00:26:08.40 most of the others things, they take care of themselves 00:26:08.43\00:26:10.87 when you are on an excellent diet, 00:26:10.90\00:26:12.23 of course, there can be individual differences. 00:26:12.27\00:26:14.40 If you got personal questions, see a doctor. 00:26:14.44\00:26:16.91 Have some of those tests checked out on yourself 00:26:16.94\00:26:19.57 and make sure that you're getting 00:26:19.61\00:26:21.24 everything that you need. 00:26:21.28\00:26:22.74 I'm Dr. David DeRose with Ask the Doctor. 00:26:22.78\00:26:25.98 If you've got questions for us, 00:26:26.01\00:26:27.62 simply send them to us at ask@lifeandhealth.org. 00:26:27.65\00:26:34.52 Well, friends, that's it for today, 00:27:07.36\00:27:08.99 but join us next week for another episode. 00:27:09.02\00:27:12.33 In the meantime pick up the phone 00:27:12.36\00:27:13.76 and give us a call at 1-800-525-9192. 00:27:13.80\00:27:19.73 Mention the NEWSTART Now program 00:27:19.77\00:27:22.50 and receive the NEWSTART special. 00:27:22.54\00:27:25.47
