00:12:13.46\00:12:14.80 Happy to be here. 00:12:14.83\00:12:16.16 I'm glad you are here 00:12:16.20\00:12:17.53 and I'm glad we get to talk 00:12:17.57\00:12:18.90 about this young lady and her husband, 00:12:18.93\00:12:23.37 although we didn't interview the husband. 00:12:23.41\00:12:26.17 Tell us, she came to support him 00:12:26.21\00:12:29.81 and it seems as though, 00:12:29.84\00:12:31.65 she has gained a lot or lost some weight. 00:12:31.68\00:12:34.98 But gained a lot of knowledge through the lectures and such 00:12:35.02\00:12:38.12 but, tell us little bit about her husband? 00:12:38.15\00:12:42.62 Well, as far as she is concerned, 00:12:42.66\00:12:44.16 she is a very pleasant person as you could tell. 00:12:44.19\00:12:46.46 Yes. 00:12:46.49\00:12:47.83 And I'd like to talk about that. 00:12:47.86\00:12:50.37 If a person comes as a companion 00:12:50.40\00:12:52.90 or they come as a full medical patient, 00:12:52.93\00:12:56.27 that's so important 00:12:56.30\00:12:58.27 and I think may be people out there, 00:12:58.31\00:12:59.97 they're considering coming, 00:13:00.01\00:13:02.08 you know, when you get back home 00:13:02.11\00:13:04.38 and you're kind of hanging out there by yourself 00:13:04.41\00:13:06.98 and they don't have any idea about what you did 00:13:07.02\00:13:09.98 and why you are doing it, it's hard. 00:13:10.02\00:13:13.25 Pritikin when he did it, he charged a lot of money clear 00:13:13.29\00:13:15.89 back in the late 70s and in the 80s, 00:13:15.92\00:13:19.13 it's still going on with his son. 00:13:19.16\00:13:21.53 But, he realized the power of a companion, 00:13:21.56\00:13:25.73 so with that high price, the companion got to come free. 00:13:25.77\00:13:30.41 And so she, they both benefited a great deal. 00:13:30.44\00:13:35.48 As far as James or Jim as we called him, 00:13:35.51\00:13:39.41 he had a lot of musculoskeletal problems, 00:13:39.45\00:13:43.12 he had three back operations. 00:13:43.15\00:13:44.95 After the second one, 00:13:44.99\00:13:47.49 I was kind of quipping with him. 00:13:47.52\00:13:49.46 I said they really put the screws to you, 00:13:49.49\00:13:51.43 didn't they? 00:13:51.46\00:13:53.03 Because the screws have become loose 00:13:53.06\00:13:54.76 and gone right into the nerves 00:13:54.80\00:13:57.23 and he was in a wheelchair, so they, he said, 00:13:57.27\00:14:00.27 "I don't want another operation," 00:14:00.30\00:14:01.64 they said, "Well, you'll be in a wheelchair 00:14:01.67\00:14:03.17 the rest of your life." 00:14:03.20\00:14:04.54 So, he took him out and he's a little better, 00:14:04.57\00:14:06.04 but his back was going into spasm, 00:14:06.07\00:14:08.41 and I tried to show him that isometric exercise, 00:14:08.44\00:14:11.75 and then his knee was bothering him, 00:14:11.78\00:14:13.65 it was bone on bone. 00:14:13.68\00:14:15.58 And when he had the treadmill, the second one, 00:14:15.62\00:14:19.52 he went longer than he had done before and he said, 00:14:19.55\00:14:21.82 you know, "My knee didn't even bother me." 00:14:21.86\00:14:25.06 And the plant based foods, 00:14:25.09\00:14:27.03 we've talked about the prostate gland as many times. 00:14:27.06\00:14:29.20 Yes. 00:14:29.23\00:14:30.57 And they're anti-inflammatory, 00:14:30.60\00:14:31.93 so many of the guests got blessings from that. 00:14:31.97\00:14:36.57 One of the patients was even considering a shoulder surgery, 00:14:36.60\00:14:41.21 and they just has so much good thing to say 00:14:41.24\00:14:44.91 about the physical therapy and the massage and those in, 00:14:44.95\00:14:48.08 she said, "I could only--" Last night in our graduation, 00:14:48.12\00:14:51.45 she said, "I could only bring my arm at this far, 00:14:51.49\00:14:53.69 " and she said, "Now watch," and I said, "Was Remarkable, 00:14:53.72\00:14:57.09 " because it usually takes three to six months. 00:14:57.13\00:14:59.66 But anyway, coming back to him, 00:14:59.69\00:15:01.66 he has so much heart failure that his legs were just-- 00:15:01.70\00:15:05.13 Here, you could press on him 00:15:05.17\00:15:06.77 clear up to the top of the calf, 00:15:06.80\00:15:08.67 and will leave it dense. 00:15:08.70\00:15:10.04 So, there was lot of water, and he lost over 10, 12 pounds. 00:15:10.07\00:15:14.34 Wow. 00:15:14.38\00:15:15.71 But that was water out of him. 00:15:15.74\00:15:17.08 At the end, his legs were soft, and you know, 00:15:17.11\00:15:20.65 all that the water wasn't in there. 00:15:20.68\00:15:23.05 But coming back to Linda, 00:15:23.08\00:15:25.92 the reason why she was so thrilled 00:15:25.95\00:15:28.79 is because to have somebody around the house 00:15:28.82\00:15:31.59 with just having so much problem, 00:15:31.63\00:15:34.16 that crying is on you, you know, 00:15:34.20\00:15:36.26 and trying to help him and do all these things. 00:15:36.30\00:15:39.27 The other thing is that she was amazing, 00:15:39.30\00:15:42.24 we see this occasionally. 00:15:42.27\00:15:44.21 She noticed into the second week 00:15:44.24\00:15:45.94 that her husband wasn't having apneic breathing, 00:15:45.97\00:15:48.88 that means they will stop breathing for a while, 00:15:48.91\00:15:52.48 and then they will start breathing deeply 00:15:52.51\00:15:55.02 and they'll have this heavy, heavy breathing 00:15:55.05\00:15:57.65 and that goes down again, and then they go, 00:15:57.69\00:16:00.32 they tell us really, really low, 00:16:00.36\00:16:02.89 and then they start breathing again, 00:16:02.92\00:16:05.16 and he was snoring a lot. 00:16:05.19\00:16:07.26 And so, I said, 00:16:07.30\00:16:08.66 "Jim, why don't you get one of those machines?" 00:16:08.70\00:16:10.57 and he said, "Ah! Couldn't tolerate it." 00:16:10.60\00:16:12.67 And she said, "That was gone." 00:16:12.70\00:16:16.04 Praise God. 00:16:16.07\00:16:17.41 Yeah, well it's just not that usual to have that happen 00:16:17.44\00:16:19.77 but we do see it. 00:16:19.81\00:16:21.14 You know, what real interests me 00:16:21.18\00:16:22.54 getting back to Linda for a moment. 00:16:22.58\00:16:24.71 Here she is, like my wife came with me 00:16:24.75\00:16:27.78 as a companion, 00:16:27.82\00:16:29.55 although she was a full guest as it were a patient. 00:16:29.58\00:16:34.82 She has gained so much 00:16:34.86\00:16:37.06 from coming through this program, 00:16:37.09\00:16:39.09 and I like what you said, when you have a companion, 00:16:39.13\00:16:42.50 and it be your wife or husband, 00:16:42.53\00:16:44.93 you've got that support system when you get back home. 00:16:44.97\00:16:47.87 Exactly. 00:16:47.90\00:16:49.24 I think it's so important for people 00:16:49.27\00:16:51.44 either to have the support 00:16:51.47\00:16:53.24 or let us support them after they leave 00:16:53.27\00:16:57.21 which as you know is one of my jobs here. 00:16:57.25\00:17:00.52 Yeah, and it's absolutely important. 00:17:00.55\00:17:02.72 I was so thrilled with some of the feedback 00:17:02.75\00:17:05.05 you gave me yesterday. 00:17:05.09\00:17:06.42 Yeah. 00:17:06.45\00:17:07.79 So because, I mean, they can leave here 00:17:07.82\00:17:09.79 and just be thoroughly pleased, excited, 00:17:09.82\00:17:12.99 they're gonna go and having conquered the world 00:17:13.03\00:17:15.40 and then that's why we do an eight week activities, 00:17:15.43\00:17:20.90 a NEWSTART activities calendar, 00:17:20.94\00:17:23.10 and it's adaptation of Dr. Adelyn on the Today show, 00:17:23.14\00:17:26.78 1995 and 1997. 00:17:26.81\00:17:29.38 And with that follow-up, 00:17:29.41\00:17:31.25 it keeps them accountable as they do it and yeah, 00:17:31.28\00:17:35.18 that's the whole thing. 00:17:35.22\00:17:36.55 Do it until you know how to do it and it's fun 00:17:36.58\00:17:40.19 and the lifestyle just gives you 00:17:40.22\00:17:44.29 joy in your heart again. 00:17:44.33\00:17:45.93 And has me. 00:17:45.96\00:17:47.70 And so, what do you feel is the prognosis for Jim? 00:17:47.73\00:17:53.03 Is he relieved of these, 00:17:53.07\00:17:56.44 this pain that he's been having? 00:17:56.47\00:17:59.41 What about the heart? 00:17:59.44\00:18:00.78 How is it gonna function after he leaves here? 00:18:00.81\00:18:03.95 Well, I take him off of his diuretic 00:18:03.98\00:18:09.15 after a while because his blood pressure was-- 00:18:09.18\00:18:11.59 I told him he's going back into his teens, 00:18:11.62\00:18:13.62 his blood pressure was low enough, 00:18:13.66\00:18:15.42 so I took him off of that so. 00:18:15.46\00:18:17.23 That weight loss and the edema coming out, 00:18:17.26\00:18:19.89 that was without the diuretic. 00:18:19.93\00:18:21.63 We've talked about that before how the heart gets so strong 00:18:21.66\00:18:24.33 it pumps the extra water out through the kidneys. 00:18:24.37\00:18:27.30 He is, I mean, he is thrilled. Yeah. 00:18:27.34\00:18:30.51 And he will stay under your guidance for a while? 00:18:30.54\00:18:34.18 Well, as long as he can keep sending me those calendars 00:18:34.21\00:18:38.01 and the thing is that 00:18:38.05\00:18:39.41 the two of them together you have known. 00:18:39.45\00:18:41.52 I tell people I say 00:18:41.55\00:18:43.08 you know if the person really understands 00:18:43.12\00:18:45.05 what you are saying, don't keep going after him. 00:18:45.09\00:18:48.69 If you go after them again before 10 years, 00:18:48.72\00:18:51.59 you're just nagging. 00:18:51.63\00:18:52.96 And we don't want to do that. 00:18:54.80\00:18:56.16 No, it doesn't help. 00:18:56.20\00:18:58.13 I want to thank you and God bless your work here 00:18:58.17\00:19:01.57 at the NEWSTART program and in Africa of course. 00:19:01.60\00:19:05.57 And thank you, friends, but don't go away, 00:19:05.61\00:19:07.74 we have the important message to follow. 00:19:07.78\00:19:12.61 Welcome friends in our NEWSTART kitchen. 00:19:12.65\00:19:15.38 My name is Radek 00:19:15.42\00:19:16.75 and the recipe I'm going to show you today 00:19:16.79\00:19:18.65 is called special rice loaf. 00:19:18.69\00:19:24.29 And some of you actually might know 00:19:24.33\00:19:26.76 the kind of traditional special K loaf. 00:19:26.80\00:19:30.90 So this is actually basically following the same idea 00:19:30.93\00:19:35.27 only with the rice cereal. 00:19:35.30\00:19:36.77 And the reason why I choose rice cereal is because 00:19:36.81\00:19:39.67 the special K is not gluten-free. 00:19:39.71\00:19:42.81 And the rice cereal 00:19:42.84\00:19:44.61 allows people with gluten-free allergies 00:19:44.65\00:19:46.92 to enjoy this scrumptious loaf. 00:19:46.95\00:19:49.78 So that's the main ingredients what you need, the rice. 00:19:49.82\00:19:52.79 And so what I'm using in this recipe is rice crispy cereal 00:19:52.82\00:19:58.46 that we have here at NEWSTART and you can actually today 00:19:58.49\00:20:02.66 what I understand buy it even at different stores like 00:20:02.70\00:20:05.53 Target, Kmart, Walmart. 00:20:05.57\00:20:08.57 It's something that's becoming really available. 00:20:08.60\00:20:11.17 The reason why I like it is it's purely gluten-free 00:20:11.21\00:20:13.81 and it's nice and crispy. 00:20:13.84\00:20:15.18 So, it brings really good texture 00:20:15.21\00:20:19.15 in the loaf and that's what we want, 00:20:19.18\00:20:21.02 we want kind of this meaty texture 00:20:21.05\00:20:24.42 that would actually be really pleasant to enjoy. 00:20:24.45\00:20:28.49 So that's the cereal I'm using as main ingredients. 00:20:28.52\00:20:33.13 There's other ingredients what I'm using, 00:20:33.16\00:20:35.56 it's soymilk remember for anything 00:20:35.60\00:20:38.73 that you are making savory for loafs 00:20:38.77\00:20:41.64 or for anything salty, 00:20:41.67\00:20:43.41 you will need milk that doesn't have any flavor 00:20:43.44\00:20:45.44 and no sweetener. 00:20:45.47\00:20:46.88 So always look for a milk, look on the package 00:20:46.91\00:20:51.01 and just to make sure there is no sweetener 00:20:51.05\00:20:53.62 and no vanilla flavor or any other flavor. 00:20:53.65\00:20:57.05 You need walnuts, 00:20:57.09\00:20:58.69 you need to chop the celery and onions. 00:20:58.72\00:21:04.23 They are supposed to be sautaed, so, you, 00:21:04.26\00:21:07.53 before you use them in this recipe, 00:21:07.56\00:21:09.26 you have to sautaed them. 00:21:09.30\00:21:10.63 I've already done it. 00:21:10.67\00:21:12.00 So forgive me for that, it just you know 00:21:12.03\00:21:14.34 for that kind of time we have here. 00:21:14.37\00:21:17.64 Then what you need are seasonings, special seasoning, 00:21:17.67\00:21:20.94 so garlic powder, onion powder, 00:21:20.98\00:21:24.18 you need marjoram and you need sage. 00:21:24.21\00:21:28.05 These are the seasonings 00:21:28.08\00:21:29.42 that actually work really well in the loaf. 00:21:29.45\00:21:31.99 Then another seasoning 00:21:32.02\00:21:33.36 that I'm using that's a mixture, 00:21:33.39\00:21:34.86 that's a chicken style seasoning. 00:21:34.89\00:21:37.06 Here is actually, here is onion powder. 00:21:37.09\00:21:42.96 I'm sorry these are both garlic powder 00:21:43.00\00:21:46.53 and this is onion powder 00:21:46.57\00:21:47.90 and then we need yeast flakes and the cereals. 00:21:47.94\00:21:51.64 So we already did the onions and the celery, 00:21:51.67\00:21:56.51 so we don't need to sautaed it, 00:21:56.54\00:21:58.21 so what we will do now we will mix the-- 00:21:58.25\00:22:03.15 we will blend the milk with the walnuts. 00:22:03.18\00:22:06.52 And we do it just shortly. 00:22:09.76\00:22:14.23 You don't need to leave it in the blender for too long, 00:22:14.26\00:22:19.87 just to cut 'em, make it nice and smooth. 00:22:19.90\00:22:22.40 So we will turn it on, 00:22:22.44\00:22:23.81 and maybe like for 10, 15 seconds. 00:22:30.38\00:22:33.48 All right. 00:22:45.79\00:22:47.13 Okay and then we'll take the bowl with the cereals 00:22:51.03\00:22:54.10 that we already put them in. 00:22:54.14\00:22:56.54 And we will put the onions with the celery in there. 00:22:56.57\00:23:03.41 Garlic powder, 00:23:06.95\00:23:09.98 marjoram and sage, 00:23:10.02\00:23:13.89 chicken style seasoning, 00:23:13.92\00:23:17.03 onion powder and yeast flakes. 00:23:17.06\00:23:23.50 All right, and now we will take the mixture that we made, 00:23:23.53\00:23:26.43 mixture of walnuts and milk, we put it over. 00:23:26.47\00:23:29.77 And we will stir it, mix it together. 00:23:39.55\00:23:42.02 And as you see it's kind of liquidy, 00:23:48.52\00:23:51.99 it's kind of soupy but don't worry about it. 00:23:52.03\00:23:55.36 Because, you know, it will become thicker 00:23:55.40\00:24:00.47 as the cereal absorbs the liquid 00:24:00.50\00:24:02.47 and becomes kind of plumpy. 00:24:02.50\00:24:05.07 So what you do now after you stir it, 00:24:08.14\00:24:11.45 you just kind of leave it for like 00:24:11.48\00:24:17.25 30 minutes on the counter. 00:24:17.29\00:24:21.62 So the rice, you know, will have time to swell 00:24:21.66\00:24:25.06 and to observe the liquid 00:24:25.09\00:24:26.86 and it will become nice and soft, 00:24:26.90\00:24:28.86 then you know after 30 minutes, 00:24:28.90\00:24:30.73 you can use your hands 00:24:30.77\00:24:32.40 and you can kind of press it with your hands, you know, 00:24:32.43\00:24:38.97 the rice together so it would be nice and sticky, 00:24:39.01\00:24:41.34 it would stick together. 00:24:41.38\00:24:43.24 And then 00:24:43.28\00:24:46.38 you just put it on a baking, 00:24:46.41\00:24:50.89 on a baking sheet. 00:24:50.92\00:24:54.52 All right. 00:24:54.56\00:24:56.22 So I'm not doing it, 00:24:56.26\00:25:01.63 so just remember 00:25:01.66\00:25:03.23 that give the rice about 30 minutes to swell, 00:25:03.26\00:25:08.57 then it will be much thicker then it is now. 00:25:08.60\00:25:13.21 And after 30 minutes, 00:25:13.24\00:25:17.05 you put it in the oiled pan. 00:25:17.08\00:25:19.35 And you bake it in the oven 00:25:27.02\00:25:28.36 that got pre-heated 350 degrees of Fahrenheit 00:25:28.39\00:25:33.29 and you bake it for like about 30, 45 minutes, 00:25:33.33\00:25:36.60 it depends how strong is your oven. 00:25:36.63\00:25:38.77 Each oven kind of fluctuates on the temperature even, 00:25:38.80\00:25:41.77 you know, when you set it up on 350 degrees, 00:25:41.80\00:25:44.11 you probably know already 00:25:44.14\00:25:45.47 that the oven maybe little bit weaker, 00:25:45.51\00:25:48.71 so it depends on your oven. 00:25:48.74\00:25:50.08 So it's about 30 up to 45 minutes 00:25:50.11\00:25:53.31 and then when it's done, 00:25:53.35\00:25:55.18 it will be nice and firm. 00:25:58.59\00:26:01.62 For those who actually know special K loaf, 00:26:01.66\00:26:07.30 it looks just identical like a special K loaf. 00:26:07.33\00:26:12.23 The only difference is that it's gluten-free, it got rice, 00:26:12.27\00:26:15.90 we call it special rice loaf. 00:26:15.94\00:26:18.61 And about the taste and flavor will surprise you 00:26:18.64\00:26:22.84 because it will still be something that 00:26:22.88\00:26:25.68 you might be familiar with special K. 00:26:25.71\00:26:29.12 So here it is, 00:26:29.15\00:26:31.05 you can again serve it with mashed potatoes, gravy, 00:26:31.09\00:26:34.62 the way how you like it. 00:26:34.66\00:26:36.42 Never forget to have enough fresh vegetables 00:26:36.46\00:26:39.89 going along with it to get some really good nutrients from it.
