Wouldn't it be nice if you could actually add 00:00:26.59\00:00:29.72 quality years to your life rather than dying one organ at a 00:00:29.76\00:00:32.99 time. And in our studios today I have 00:01:16.17\00:01:21.34 Virginia Becker. I would like to take a look at when Virginia 00:01:21.38\00:01:26.48 first arrived. In July of this year I started 00:01:26.51\00:01:33.29 having shortness of breath and tightness in the chest and so 00:01:33.32\00:01:37.89 they did a treadmill test on me which was inconclusive and so in 00:01:37.93\00:01:42.46 August they did a nuclear medicine treadmill test and 00:01:42.50\00:01:46.43 found out that my left ventricle is working at only 42-47 percent 00:01:46.47\00:01:54.81 So my heart wasn't getting enough oxygen and I decided 00:01:54.84\00:02:01.28 rather than to go under the knife I wanted to get it taken 00:02:01.35\00:02:06.76 care of naturally if at all possible. So in July I actually 00:02:06.79\00:02:12.86 started eating vegan at home and I started feeling better. So I 00:02:12.89\00:02:18.93 came here to help me to learn how to better cook vegan and 00:02:18.97\00:02:25.74 learn a different lifestyle. Before I leave here I want my 00:02:25.77\00:02:33.25 heart to be completely healthy and I want to hopefully lose 00:02:33.28\00:02:40.19 some more weight so I can go out and take a walk and not be out 00:02:40.22\00:02:46.36 of breath and my chest hurting. I have two one-year-old twin 00:02:46.39\00:02:52.53 grandsons and I want to be able to keep up with them. 00:02:52.57\00:02:59.84 Welcome back friends and in our studio Virginia. How are you 00:02:59.87\00:03:03.28 dear? I'm fine, thank you. 00:03:03.31\00:03:04.81 I'm so happy to see you and I'm thankful that you're willing to 00:03:04.85\00:03:10.25 have this interview. 00:03:10.29\00:03:11.62 Well, I'm glad to be here. 00:03:11.65\00:03:13.46 Yeah. Now you got here 16 days ago, 17 days ago. Right. And 00:03:13.49\00:03:19.49 like all our guests you're here for an 18-day program, but you 00:03:19.53\00:03:24.87 had some conditions when you first arrived. Let's talk about 00:03:24.93\00:03:30.17 that. What happened that made you need to come to NEWSTART. 00:03:30.21\00:03:34.74 Why did you pick NEWSTART? Why didn't you pick some place on 00:03:34.78\00:03:39.28 the east coast or Florida? 00:03:39.31\00:03:41.48 Well I had a heart issue and I don't know. I've always just 00:03:41.52\00:03:48.39 known about NEWSTART and so it was my first choice since I'm 00:03:48.42\00:03:54.76 from Washington state so it's a lot closer. Yes. And my husband 00:03:54.80\00:04:01.10 agreed that this is where I should come. So due to 00:04:01.14\00:04:05.67 circumstances that didn't happen till November but I came and 00:04:05.71\00:04:10.15 I'm very glad that I did. 00:04:10.18\00:04:12.28 Yes. Now you were asked or told by your cardiologist that you 00:04:12.31\00:04:18.39 needed a bypass or an open heart surgery of some kind that you 00:04:18.45\00:04:24.49 refused to do or was that just an exam? 00:04:24.53\00:04:28.16 It was just an exam. It was an initial exam. He wanted to do 00:04:28.20\00:04:33.87 an angiogram to see if it was blocked or just narrowed. Right. 00:04:33.90\00:04:40.08 So we set up the appointment for me to have that done and on the 00:04:40.11\00:04:45.21 way home I thought I don't even want that done. I don't want 00:04:45.25\00:04:49.55 them doing anything inside my body so by the time I got home 00:04:49.58\00:04:53.52 I told my husband, I don't even want to do that. And he said, 00:04:53.56\00:04:57.43 then don't. Good girl. So I called NEWSTART that day and 00:04:57.46\00:05:02.56 signed up and called the cardiologist and cancelled my 00:05:02.60\00:05:07.67 appointment. And signed out. Yeah. 00:05:07.70\00:05:09.50 You know I had two of those. One about 30 years ago. The 00:05:09.57\00:05:14.11 cardiologist had me sign a waiver and I said what's this? 00:05:14.14\00:05:18.81 He says well sometimes we have complications because we go up 00:05:18.88\00:05:23.39 through the artery in the groin and you might end up losing a 00:05:23.42\00:05:26.99 leg. And I says what are you talking about? I don't want to 00:05:27.02\00:05:31.16 lose a leg. Well that rarely happens. Anyway I got a little 00:05:31.19\00:05:35.00 frightened and a little nervous. Then I'm lying on this table 00:05:35.03\00:05:39.93 and they shoot this dye and I got really warm inside. I said I 00:05:40.00\00:05:44.87 don't like this. In any case, I wish I'd never done those but I 00:05:44.91\00:05:48.94 made it through. So you didn't do that but you decided to come 00:05:48.98\00:05:53.58 to the NEWSTART program. Why did you come? What did you hope to 00:05:53.62\00:05:58.15 gain or lose? Lose the heart problem. I knew 00:05:58.19\00:06:08.53 that their lifestyle, you know eating, everything about them 00:06:08.56\00:06:14.24 was different and it was what I needed. So I hoped that in 00:06:14.27\00:06:19.84 coming here that I could lose some of the weight so that my 00:06:19.87\00:06:24.61 cholesterol would be better which wasn't real high but high 00:06:24.65\00:06:29.35 enough. I wasn't on any medication for that. That, the 00:06:29.38\00:06:38.59 cholesterol down, but mainly to get my arteries cleaned out 00:06:38.63\00:06:45.43 so that my heart disease would be reversed. And I knew, and I 00:06:45.47\00:06:52.24 can't tell you how many times I checked out the NEWSTART 00:06:52.27\00:06:56.08 website and said wow here's somebody who was 95 percent 00:06:56.11\00:07:00.15 blocked and after a year and a half he went back to his 00:07:00.18\00:07:04.15 cardiologist and his arteries looked good. And I thought, if 00:07:04.19\00:07:09.22 they can do it for him, I can go there and getting on this 00:07:09.29\00:07:14.30 lifestyle, it will happen for me too. 00:07:14.33\00:07:17.77 Good attitude. And that is the truth. I've been associated with 00:07:17.80\00:07:22.37 the NEWSTART program for nine years this year and the program 00:07:22.40\00:07:28.24 that we're now doing, you and I, probably five or six years. 00:07:28.28\00:07:33.45 We've had a number of the people come through the program, like 00:07:33.48\00:07:38.59 me, who had blocked arteries who have cleared them out now 00:07:38.62\00:07:43.63 through lifestyle. There are other ways to do it as well. One 00:07:43.66\00:07:47.66 is called open heart surgery. But they don't clear them out. 00:07:47.70\00:07:52.27 What they do is bypasses and such and I had that done and let 00:07:52.33\00:07:56.81 me tell you, it's no picnic. Some of you viewing, you know 00:07:56.84\00:08:01.24 what I'm talking about. The cardiologist told me, Ron in 00:08:01.28\00:08:05.65 three months you'll be able to run a marathon. Well it took me 00:08:05.68\00:08:10.05 a lot longer than three months. But nonetheless, here you are. 00:08:10.09\00:08:17.13 You had angina as some people call it and your HDL was not 00:08:17.16\00:08:22.66 that high, your cholesterol, but it was high enough where you 00:08:22.70\00:08:29.24 could be concerned. Now on your second test, it went up a little 00:08:29.30\00:08:34.74 bit. Yeah. Did Dr. Ing explain why that perhaps went up rather 00:08:34.78\00:08:40.18 than down? Well he said when you're losing 00:08:40.22\00:08:44.55 weight, which I did. How much did you lose? 00:08:44.59\00:08:48.89 I only lost five pounds. 00:08:48.92\00:08:50.26 Well that's okay. 00:08:50.29\00:08:51.63 But it's better than gaining five pounds. Absolutely. 00:08:51.66\00:08:56.70 That you know the cholesterol is being flushed out. Plus he 00:08:56.73\00:09:00.60 said if I took it daily I would notice that it does fluctuate. 00:09:00.64\00:09:05.34 Your cholesterol fluctuates and so he said not to be discouraged 00:09:05.37\00:09:10.18 about that. In three months he wants me to have it taken again 00:09:10.25\00:09:15.02 and let him know what's going on. But to stay on what I'm 00:09:15.05\00:09:21.19 doing. Which is? The diet, exercise, drinking lots of water 00:09:21.22\00:09:27.36 and trusting in God. 00:09:27.40\00:09:30.30 Amen. We like to look at it rather than a diet, a lifestyle 00:09:30.37\00:09:35.34 change which equates to a diet but someone once said to me, 00:09:35.37\00:09:41.74 what was it? Oh, the word die. If we call it anything let's 00:09:41.78\00:09:47.88 call it a live-it rather than a diet. Nonetheless, it is a 00:09:47.92\00:09:54.86 change to a plant-based food and you've learned in the last 00:09:54.89\00:10:02.43 couple weeks that whole foods, plant based, eaten whole, are 00:10:02.46\00:10:09.30 what can nourish our bodies and give us the energy and the 00:10:09.34\00:10:15.31 vitamins and minerals and fat and protein that the body needs 00:10:15.34\00:10:21.28 rather than stuffing it with animal flesh or something that 00:10:21.35\00:10:26.02 has a face or a mother that we shouldn't be putting in our 00:10:26.05\00:10:32.13 bodies. So when I learned that and lost 90 pounds I was just 00:10:32.16\00:10:37.40 thrilled. Again, I'm going to be following up with you and we'll 00:10:37.43\00:10:41.77 be talking and seeing how you're doing. So what are you going to 00:10:41.80\00:10:45.71 do when you get home? What are some of the things that you're 00:10:45.74\00:10:49.54 going to do when you walk in the house and you say hello? What 00:10:49.61\00:10:53.38 are you going to do with things in your freezer? 00:10:53.42\00:10:58.19 I have a lot of food in my pantry and in my freezer that 00:10:58.22\00:11:04.63 need to go out. I've been vegetarian most of my life so 00:11:04.69\00:11:12.43 it's not like I have meat products but I have the analogs. 00:11:12.50\00:11:17.21 Okay. They're analogs so I've got a lot of that that I'm going 00:11:17.24\00:11:21.91 to have to get rid of and get more fresh produce into my 00:11:21.94\00:11:28.48 refrigerator. Good girl. And I have loved all the food that 00:11:28.52\00:11:35.02 they have cooked here so it's not going to be hard. 00:11:35.06\00:11:37.99 Well we've run out of time. I want to thank you again for 00:11:38.03\00:11:42.36 joining us and I'll be looking forward to talking to you in 00:11:42.40\00:11:45.93 another three or four weeks. Friends don't go away. We'll be 00:11:45.97\00:11:49.44 right back. 00:11:49.47\00:11:50.81 ¤ ¤ 00:11:50.84\00:12:23.41 Welcome back friends. Help me introduce you to Dr. Ing, 00:12:23.47\00:12:29.44 Clarence Ing. A pleasure to be here with you 00:12:29.48\00:12:32.61 Ron. Doctor, we were talking before 00:12:32.65\00:12:34.25 the program. You've been here 17 years, one month and so many 00:12:34.28\00:12:41.02 days. You've had to have seen some miracles in that time that 00:12:41.06\00:12:47.30 have to do with cardiovascular disease. Can we address that 00:12:47.33\00:12:53.54 with regards to Virginia? How's she doing? 00:12:53.57\00:12:56.04 She's doing well. You know if the patients follow the rules 00:12:56.07\00:13:02.11 they do very well. Right at the beginning I tell them, you can 00:13:02.14\00:13:06.78 totally ignore everything we're going to teach you if you're 00:13:06.82\00:13:11.42 willing to accept the consequences. Ouch. 00:13:11.45\00:13:14.19 And if you don't like the consequences then it may be 00:13:14.26\00:13:18.56 prudent and wise for you to follow the suggestions and 00:13:18.59\00:13:22.16 advice. The more carefully you follow the suggestions and 00:13:22.20\00:13:26.43 advice the more rapidly you will get well. There are kind of 00:13:26.50\00:13:30.41 rules for life. If you follow the rules for life, your life 00:13:30.44\00:13:34.31 will be a lot happier and you'll feel a lot better and have less 00:13:34.34\00:13:40.32 problems and spend less time and money in doctors' offices. So 00:13:40.38\00:13:46.32 it's important to learn the rules. I recognized that 00:13:46.35\00:13:50.33 sometimes people are raised and their parents never teach them 00:13:50.36\00:13:55.50 the rules. But when you get old enough to begin to look at 00:13:55.53\00:14:00.57 things you figure out why or how and what should I do to maintain 00:14:00.60\00:14:04.47 and improve my health. This is very important. Just because we 00:14:04.51\00:14:08.31 don't know the rules if you break the rules you're still 00:14:08.34\00:14:13.65 going to suffer the consequences Do anything you want as long 00:14:13.68\00:14:18.09 as you will accept the result. But if you don't like the result 00:14:18.12\00:14:22.49 of the standard American lifestyle will provide for you. 00:14:22.52\00:14:26.29 What does it provide for you? Heart disease, high blood 00:14:26.33\00:14:31.27 pressure, strokes, cancer and diabetes, then you'd probably 00:14:31.30\00:14:35.44 better learn what the rules are and put them into practice and 00:14:35.47\00:14:39.57 then you can miss out on those. It's kind of like this. 00:14:39.61\00:14:43.91 Sometimes people think that when I encourage them to follow 00:14:43.95\00:14:49.15 WPFEW which stands for Whole Plant Foods Eaten Whole that 00:14:49.18\00:14:54.42 they're going to miss out on a lot of good food. I say no, no, 00:14:54.46\00:14:59.66 no. You're not missing out on anything other than heart 00:14:59.69\00:15:02.63 disease, high blood pressure, strokes, diabetes and cancer. 00:15:02.66\00:15:05.60 I think you'd rather miss out on those anyway. 00:15:05.63\00:15:07.67 Yes. But let me ask you something, Doc. Okay, now I'm 00:15:07.70\00:15:10.97 a good guy and I'm a vegan. I'm not doing all these things. I'm 00:15:11.01\00:15:16.11 eating plant, no oil, no fat. What if I go out one time and 00:15:16.14\00:15:20.38 I splurge and I go I'm going for it and I just start eating all 00:15:20.42\00:15:24.59 this stuff. What are the effects of that one little fling? 00:15:24.62\00:15:29.82 Well, it depends what you eat but I kind of gather from what 00:15:29.86\00:15:34.26 you're saying you're not going to be eating a low-fat, plant- 00:15:34.30\00:15:38.40 based diet and if you're not going to be eating a low-fat 00:15:38.43\00:15:42.54 plant-based diet but eating the standard American diet, well 00:15:42.57\00:15:46.44 those arteries which are nice and soft and flexible are now 00:15:46.47\00:15:51.21 going to get stiff and maybe a little bit more rigid. They 00:15:51.25\00:15:55.88 won't have as much flexibility and you know they'll get back 00:15:55.95\00:16:00.06 to where they were in about a month if you follow all the 00:16:00.09\00:16:04.59 rules. Oh no. But if you go out to dinner once a week, once 00:16:04.63\00:16:09.53 every 10 days and go to one of those good ole' American 00:16:09.56\00:16:14.34 restaurants and have the standard American fare you're 00:16:14.37\00:16:17.94 not going to get better, you're probably going to get worse 00:16:17.97\00:16:22.98 like the average American does. Gotcha. So diet and food make 00:16:23.01\00:16:27.42 a profound difference in your health. It's really important. 00:16:27.45\00:16:31.85 Well what about what we learn here as far as water and 00:16:31.89\00:16:35.96 sunshine. Are they that significant, especially this 00:16:35.99\00:16:40.03 time of year when the weather is changing? 00:16:40.10\00:16:44.83 Well sunshine is important because with sunshine you get 00:16:44.87\00:16:49.70 vitamin D and you know water's important. Fresh air's important 00:16:49.74\00:16:53.34 That's one of the blessings about Weimar; you've got lots 00:16:53.38\00:16:58.51 of fresh air and usually being here as well we're above the 00:16:58.55\00:17:03.59 overcast. If you're down in the valley below a thousand feet 00:17:03.62\00:17:07.86 it may be overcast but once you get above a thousand feet at 00:17:07.89\00:17:11.49 Auburn. Like up here at Weimar at 2000 feet elevation it's 00:17:11.53\00:17:15.13 usually sunny and very nice during the winter time. 00:17:15.16\00:17:18.63 Yeah, very, very nice. 00:17:18.70\00:17:20.27 So please come join us whoever's out there who needs to 00:17:20.34\00:17:23.30 improve their health. 00:17:23.34\00:17:24.94 Absolutely. Now what about her future here. What is your 00:17:24.97\00:17:33.11 prognosis for this young lady? 00:17:33.15\00:17:36.05 Well this young lady, if Virginia follows all the 00:17:36.08\00:17:39.65 suggestions and advice, her arteries, which seem to be 00:17:39.69\00:17:43.02 narrowed, and that's why she has angina or chest pain or 00:17:43.06\00:17:46.36 discomfort when she exercises those arteries should clean out. 00:17:46.39\00:17:50.40 Now actually clean out? 00:17:50.43\00:17:52.67 Oh yeah. Dr. Caldwell, Dr. Dean Ornish and others have 00:17:52.70\00:17:57.14 shown where the arteries which are narrowed from deposits of 00:17:57.17\00:18:02.84 cholesterol with a low-fat vegan diet by and large that plaque 00:18:02.88\00:18:07.45 will be reabsorbed. The HDL goes down there, picks up the 00:18:07.48\00:18:11.32 cholesterol, carries it down to the liver, combines with the 00:18:11.35\00:18:16.09 bile salts and those go out. If you have a high fiber diet, the 00:18:16.12\00:18:21.06 bile salts are carried out in the stool. If you have the low 00:18:21.10\00:18:25.97 fat standard American diet those bile salts can be reabsorbed and 00:18:26.03\00:18:31.21 the cholesterol continues to stay high. 00:18:31.24\00:18:33.17 What do you think is the success rate for people who come through 00:18:33.21\00:18:38.61 our program here? That depends on your choices 00:18:38.65\00:18:43.45 and your willingness to be compliant. Now we say 00:18:43.49\00:18:46.19 compliance. If they're 100 percent compliant they're going 00:18:46.22\00:18:49.19 going to be very, very successful. But I also 00:18:49.22\00:18:51.79 recognize that some people it's difficult to be compliant and so 00:18:51.83\00:18:55.86 that's why we try to get them connected with the one who can 00:18:55.90\00:18:59.17 give them the power to follow the rules and that's the good 00:18:59.20\00:19:02.60 Lord. That you'll never hear on a secular program and that's 00:19:02.64\00:19:06.37 an important part of whole- person care. Physical, mental 00:19:06.41\00:19:10.08 and spiritual. Very well put. So Virginia is on 00:19:10.11\00:19:18.25 her road to recovery. We have a system in place where we follow 00:19:18.29\00:19:23.69 up with our guests on a monthly basis for those who wish for us 00:19:23.73\00:19:29.23 to follow up. Are you available to these guests? Can they call 00:19:29.26\00:19:34.74 you at any time for advice? 00:19:34.77\00:19:36.20 When I sign a little book which I give to them and also on a 00:19:36.27\00:19:40.28 list of the guests, they get my home telephone number, they get 00:19:40.31\00:19:44.85 my e-mail and when I give them their final orders usually I 00:19:44.88\00:19:49.12 write down, I say please contact me once a month and give me a 00:19:49.18\00:19:53.36 follow-up report. I have goals for them as far as their weight 00:19:53.39\00:19:57.06 goes. I tell them if I want them to get their blood checked in 00:19:57.09\00:20:02.10 two or three months, whatever it is. And they're to send me a 00:20:02.16\00:20:06.23 report they're supposed to give me their phone number so that I 00:20:06.27\00:20:10.31 can call them if need be. 00:20:10.34\00:20:12.37 And I know from fact you do call them because you've called me. 00:20:12.41\00:20:16.54 years ago, of course, and now we can just talk whenever it's 00:20:16.61\00:20:20.55 necessary. But Doctor, we're running out of time. I want to 00:20:20.58\00:20:24.89 thank you for coming here and taking your time to visit with 00:20:24.92\00:20:28.82 us and talk about Virginia. It's a pleasure. God bless you and 00:20:28.89\00:20:33.26 thank you and bless your work. Friends don't go away. We'll be 00:20:33.29\00:20:37.63 right back after this. 00:20:37.67\00:20:40.74 The second deadly psychological sin is complaining. Know 00:20:40.77\00:20:51.65 anything about that? I believe that complaining is based on a 00:20:51.68\00:20:57.22 sense of entitlement. We're kind of outraged customers that feel 00:20:57.29\00:21:02.79 that we deserve better. So at the foundation of complaining 00:21:02.82\00:21:06.33 is this what we call entitlement mentality and of course that 00:21:06.36\00:21:10.00 needs to be dealt with. But complaining in and of itself 00:21:10.03\00:21:13.64 causes a whole plethora of problems. First of all... 00:21:13.67\00:21:20.98 So what happens is with each complaint that problem gets a 00:21:21.01\00:21:25.18 little bit bigger in your field of vision and pretty soon all 00:21:25.21\00:21:29.55 that fills your field of vision is all this negativity. As a 00:21:29.58\00:21:33.86 result a person develops what we call low frustration 00:21:33.92\00:21:36.22 tolerance. Think of it in the sense of their carrying around 00:21:36.26\00:21:39.46 very full glass of water. All these negative things are right 00:21:39.49\00:21:43.87 up to the brim and the slightest extra drop causes the water to 00:21:43.90\00:21:47.54 overflow. If you keep focusing on the negative you'll end up in 00:21:47.57\00:21:51.44 that situation where you have a very low tolerance for anything 00:21:51.47\00:21:55.44 aggravating. Let's face it. In reality there are positives. 00:21:55.48\00:21:58.95 Life isn't all bad, it's not all good, it's not all bad. We 00:21:58.98\00:22:03.15 have a choice as to what we're going to focus on. The story is 00:22:03.18\00:22:07.12 told of a cowboy. The cowboy was driving down the road. He had 00:22:07.16\00:22:11.03 his dog in the back of his truck and he had a trailer behind the 00:22:11.09\00:22:13.53 truck pulling his horse. There was a terrible accident. The 00:22:13.56\00:22:17.47 vehicles were strewn all over the road. A policeman came upon 00:22:17.50\00:22:21.00 the scene. The policemen first came to the dog. He realized the 00:22:21.04\00:22:24.37 dog was not going to make it so he shot the dog. Then he came 00:22:24.41\00:22:27.71 upon the horse and he 00:22:27.74\00:22:29.08 realized the horse wasn't going to make it so he shot the horse. 00:22:29.11\00:22:32.38 Then he found the cowboy. He'd been thrown out of the vehicle 00:22:32.41\00:22:35.15 into the field and he was lying there watching the policeman 00:22:35.18\00:22:37.92 shoot his animals. The policeman came to him and looked down 00:22:37.95\00:22:41.22 at him and said how are you doing and the cowboy said I've 00:22:41.26\00:22:44.69 never felt better. When we complain there's a certain 00:22:44.73\00:22:48.10 amount of payoff. You know Dr. Phil says, what's the payoff? 00:22:48.13\00:22:51.37 That means that we're getting something out of what we're 00:22:51.40\00:22:54.60 doing. In fact, we have an expression in behavioral 00:22:54.64\00:22:57.37 psychology that goes like this. It says all behavior is 00:22:57.41\00:23:00.41 operative. Meaning that in everything that we do we're 00:23:00.44\00:23:03.91 either trying to get something or we're trying to avoid 00:23:03.95\00:23:06.01 something. In either case, achieve something. We're 00:23:06.08\00:23:08.08 getting something out of it. So even when we engage in a 00:23:08.15\00:23:11.52 negative behavior that ultimately hurts us, there is 00:23:11.55\00:23:14.89 a temporary, at least, payoff in that behavior. So normally 00:23:14.92\00:23:19.13 people really kind of, on some level, enjoy complaining. It 00:23:19.19\00:23:22.93 makes them feel maybe a little righteous. But in the cowboy's 00:23:22.96\00:23:26.84 case the payoff for complaining was really bad and the payoff 00:23:26.87\00:23:30.31 for not complaining was quite high so he didn't complain. 00:23:30.37\00:23:34.14 The replacement for complaining is gratitude. When we realize 00:23:34.18\00:23:37.51 we really don't deserve the blessing that fall all around us 00:23:37.55\00:23:41.28 and upon us every day of our lives, we start to feel grateful 00:23:41.32\00:23:45.15 I prescribe gratitude to people that are negatively focused. 00:23:45.22\00:23:49.02 Clients that have been so consumed with negativity and 00:23:49.06\00:23:51.86 complaining that they made themselves depressed, I 00:23:51.89\00:23:54.63 prescribe it like a pill. I say this is what you have to do. 00:23:54.66\00:23:57.87 You have to practice morning and evening. I tell them they must 00:23:57.90\00:24:01.20 go home and they must think of three things for which they are 00:24:01.24\00:24:04.44 grateful every evening and share it with another person. Then 00:24:04.47\00:24:07.58 the following morning when they arise think of three things for 00:24:07.64\00:24:10.71 which they are grateful and share it with another person. 00:24:10.75\00:24:14.02 It's amazing how difficult this is for some people. Sometimes 00:24:14.05\00:24:17.29 in the middle of a counseling session I'll say are you 00:24:17.32\00:24:19.82 grateful for anything. And they'll try to think of 00:24:19.85\00:24:22.39 something and then I'll pressure them a little and 00:24:22.42\00:24:24.49 they'll try to think of something and maybe they'll 00:24:24.53\00:24:26.53 think of one little thing. Then they'll go right back to their 00:24:26.56\00:24:28.90 negative thinking. And finally I'll say to them the real 00:24:28.93\00:24:32.43 problem here is not all the problems in your life. The 00:24:32.47\00:24:35.57 problem here is that you're focused on those problems. 00:24:35.60\00:24:38.64 Let's work on changing your focus. I want to tell you about 00:24:38.67\00:24:42.68 a study that showed the affect of gratitude. It was performed 00:24:42.71\00:24:46.98 on undergraduate students over a 10-week period of time. The 00:24:47.02\00:24:51.72 undergrads were split into three groups. They completed a weekly 00:24:51.75\00:24:56.39 log of their emotions. One third were to write about five 00:24:56.42\00:25:00.46 impacting events. One third were to write about five hassles and 00:25:00.50\00:25:05.87 one third were to write five things for which they were 00:25:05.90\00:25:08.47 grateful. Then they wanted to measure how these different 00:25:08.50\00:25:11.07 focuses affected their emotions. The study says... 00:25:11.11\00:25:30.33 So gratitude had the effect of making people take care of 00:25:30.39\00:25:34.10 themselves better. And in addition to that they just plain 00:25:34.13\00:25:38.13 felt better physically as a result of gratitude. It's worth 00:25:38.17\00:25:42.60 a try isn't it? It reminds me of a quote by one of my favorite 00:25:42.64\00:25:46.91 Ellen White. She said: Nothing tends more to promote health of 00:25:46.98\00:25:51.21 body and soul than does a spirit of gratitude and praise. 00:25:51.25\00:25:56.62 Hello, I'm Dr. David DeRose.
