In our studio we have Dennis 00:01:16.14\00:01:20.38 McGowan from Olympia, Washington I'd like you to take a look at 00:01:20.41\00:01:26.31 when Dennis first arrived. Well two weeks ago I was scheduled to 00:01:26.35\00:01:32.19 have open heart surgery, quintuple bypass. Two weeks 00:01:32.22\00:01:35.59 prior to that I had been diagnosed with severe heart 00:01:35.62\00:01:40.10 disease, cardiovascular disease and actually Weimar was 00:01:40.13\00:01:44.47 suggested, the NEWSTART program was suggested to me by both of 00:01:44.53\00:01:47.70 those heart surgeons and I researched it and decided that 00:01:47.74\00:01:51.57 even if I was to have bypass surgery I would still have to 00:01:51.61\00:01:55.51 have a radical lifestyle change and so we prayed about it and 00:01:55.54\00:01:58.81 talked to a lot of people about it and decided we were going to 00:01:58.85\00:02:02.08 give God the chance first to create that lifestyle change 00:02:02.12\00:02:07.22 within us and have my condition be reversed. 00:02:07.26\00:02:09.79 So here we are at NEWSTART. The results I'm praying for are to 00:02:09.82\00:02:13.96 indeed experience a certain amount of reversal while being 00:02:14.00\00:02:18.73 here because that will give me all the data I need that I can 00:02:18.80\00:02:23.54 continue on with this lifestyle and indeed reverse it back to 00:02:23.57\00:02:28.31 a healthy state. We just had twin grandchildren born on 00:02:28.34\00:02:33.78 October 15th. They're a motivation for me to get well. 00:02:33.82\00:02:39.19 So it's out of my control. It's in God's hands and all I can do 00:02:39.22\00:02:44.59 is follow the plan he's set out. I'm anxious to go home and prove 00:02:44.66\00:02:49.86 of my doctor friends wrong too. They said that they'd never ever 00:02:49.90\00:02:54.50 in medical school or anywhere else heard that cardiovascular 00:02:54.54\00:02:59.11 disease was reversible. So I want to be a living proof, 00:02:59.14\00:03:04.61 living testimony to them as well 00:03:04.65\00:03:07.75 Welcome back friends. And in our studio, Dennis. Good to see you 00:03:07.78\00:03:13.02 sir. Thank you, it's good to be here. 00:03:13.05\00:03:14.66 You know I was saying to you before we started shooting, you 00:03:14.69\00:03:20.00 look different. I look different and I feel 00:03:20.03\00:03:23.37 different and I've had several comments this past week about 00:03:23.40\00:03:26.60 how much I look different. 00:03:26.63\00:03:29.20 How are you feeling internally? That's the question. 00:03:29.24\00:03:34.18 I feel great. You know if you remember from my original 00:03:34.24\00:03:39.11 interview I was asymptomatic so it wasn't like I was in a lot of 00:03:39.15\00:03:43.08 pain or having a lot or struggles or anything but 00:03:43.12\00:03:44.45 I've spent 18 days of doing a lot of walking, breathing a lot 00:03:44.49\00:03:48.62 of walking, breathing a lot of fresh air and you know I can't 00:03:48.66\00:03:52.83 explain it but I feel different. 00:03:52.86\00:03:54.70 Your wife's telling me you're walking five miles a day. 00:03:54.73\00:03:57.63 Minimum of five, as much as eight. 00:03:57.67\00:04:00.50 Isn't that amazing. Now when you got here day one could you walk 00:04:00.54\00:04:05.41 okay? I could walk and I thought I was 00:04:05.44\00:04:08.31 in fairly good shape for my condition. But as you know the 00:04:08.34\00:04:11.88 hills around here, when I'd get to the top of the hill I was 00:04:11.91\00:04:15.75 breathing pretty hard and I think for me personally one of 00:04:15.78\00:04:20.46 the greatest indicators of my coming into more better shape is 00:04:20.49\00:04:25.13 that I can now go up those hills and not experience the 00:04:25.16\00:04:28.16 heavy breathing that I was. And my pulse rate is lower than it 00:04:28.20\00:04:33.44 was a couple of weeks ago. 00:04:33.47\00:04:34.94 What is your resting pulse? 00:04:35.00\00:04:36.40 I'm about 67. Wow, that's impressive. And the doctor did 00:04:36.44\00:04:42.68 not want me to go over 110 on any of my hikes and so I had to 00:04:42.71\00:04:47.52 do some checks and on one particular hike we took with a 00:04:47.55\00:04:51.89 group, it was about 5-1/2 miles, one of the nurses was along and 00:04:51.92\00:04:57.49 took my pulse and I was at 80. So I said praise God. 00:04:57.53\00:05:01.16 Wow! Wow! 80! That's amazing. Mine gets up, I usually run 00:05:01.20\00:05:07.94 about 125 to get my heart pumping but I still climb these 00:05:07.97\00:05:14.64 hills and I still get huffing and puffing. But you're not even 00:05:14.68\00:05:17.91 doing that. I'm not. It's just amazing. 00:05:17.95\00:05:23.42 So what's the prognosis? Where do you go from here? 00:05:23.49\00:05:27.56 Well, again, we entered this program looking at it as a 00:05:27.62\00:05:31.49 three-year plan and we're staying true to that course. 00:05:31.53\00:05:35.66 You know I've had enough indicators that things are 00:05:35.73\00:05:39.80 already reversing and changing. My EKG, my second one, compared 00:05:39.83\00:05:45.61 to my first one showed a significant difference. My 00:05:45.64\00:05:50.05 cholesterol numbers have come down. I've lost inches. So it's 00:05:50.08\00:05:56.52 more than I could have ever expected. 00:05:56.55\00:05:58.62 What are your cholesterol numbers? Do you remember? 00:05:58.65\00:06:02.02 Well I came in at 199 and they've gone down 35 points to 00:06:02.06\00:06:06.09 165, 164, right in that area. 00:06:06.13\00:06:08.83 Your LDL, do you know where that is? 00:06:08.86\00:06:11.53 I think it was 110 if I remember correctly, somewhere around 00:06:11.57\00:06:15.74 there. My HDLs were like 30. So they were out of sorts. 00:06:15.77\00:06:21.14 Yeah, a little bit. How about the triglycerides? 00:06:21.18\00:06:23.98 That one I'm not remembering. 00:06:24.01\00:06:27.35 Probably because it doesn't matter at this point. 00:06:27.38\00:06:30.75 You know, that's it. I'm kind of not looking to the past and I'm 00:06:30.79\00:06:34.56 just looking to the future. 00:06:34.59\00:06:36.93 Yeah. Where you taking medication when you got here? 00:06:36.96\00:06:38.83 Um, I was and I haven't been weaned off all of them. I have a 00:06:38.89\00:06:44.40 hiatal hernia so I'm taking medication to keep the acid down 00:06:44.43\00:06:49.20 and then my cholesterol, I was on a really low dose of the 00:06:49.24\00:06:53.51 statin for cholesterol and because I have that heredity, 00:06:53.54\00:06:57.48 that family history, my body makes a lot of cholesterol and 00:06:57.51\00:07:01.42 even though I've been off any animal products at all for about 00:07:01.48\00:07:04.92 three months, that cholesterol is still fighting me so they're 00:07:04.95\00:07:08.39 leaving me on that as well. 00:07:08.42\00:07:11.53 Okay and are any of the medications that you were taking 00:07:11.56\00:07:15.13 that you're no longer taking? 00:07:15.16\00:07:18.13 Um, no I'm just on lower doses. 00:07:18.17\00:07:21.07 Lower doses. Okay that's good. So your physician when you get 00:07:21.10\00:07:30.21 back home, does he know what you're doing now? 00:07:30.25\00:07:34.52 Actually no, because again I was slated for open heart surgery 00:07:34.58\00:07:40.06 about five weeks ago now. I actually received a call while I 00:07:40.09\00:07:45.53 was down here from my cardiologist back home saying 00:07:45.56\00:07:48.73 hey we're just checking in on you wanting to know how you are. 00:07:48.76\00:07:52.63 So we're going to have those discussions when we get back but 00:07:52.70\00:07:56.54 at least now I have some documentation that proves what 00:07:56.57\00:08:00.98 I'm doing is not foolhardy. That I'm following the original plan. 00:08:01.01\00:08:07.55 That's wise, that's wise. Well who's your doctor here, Dr. 00:08:07.58\00:08:11.55 Ing? Dr. Ing. And is he pleased with your results. 00:08:11.59\00:08:15.42 He is pleased and he has been very encouraging. I can't say 00:08:15.46\00:08:19.83 enough about the staff here on how much they encourage and just 00:08:19.86\00:08:24.60 kind of keep us going and keep us motivated. Yeah, he's been a 00:08:24.63\00:08:29.37 real God send. These doctors here are so much 00:08:29.40\00:08:34.54 different than the doctors outside in the real world. I've 00:08:34.58\00:08:38.38 never had a doctor spend more that five or 10 minutes with me. 00:08:38.41\00:08:42.18 So when I came here they'd spend an hour. 00:08:42.22\00:08:44.15 Right. And Dr. Ing has given me all of his personal contact 00:08:44.19\00:08:47.99 information. I guarantee you none of my doctors at home 00:08:48.02\00:08:51.76 would do that. No. I can call him at home. He's invited me to 00:08:51.79\00:08:54.96 call him at home. 00:08:55.00\00:08:56.33 That's right. And if he doesn't answer the phone he'll call you 00:08:56.36\00:09:00.34 back because I've done that and he's called me as late as 10 00:09:00.37\00:09:04.74 o'clock at night. What's going on? How are you feeling? And 00:09:04.77\00:09:08.34 spend time with you. That's right. By the way while we're 00:09:08.41\00:09:11.91 one the subject, you know that I will do some follow-up when you 00:09:11.95\00:09:16.72 leave here. Yes. And we can chat as well. Now are you satisfied 00:09:16.75\00:09:21.49 with the results thus far? 00:09:21.52\00:09:24.43 I am actually more than satisfied. You know as I said 00:09:24.46\00:09:28.40 I came down here with the idea that I wanted to see just some 00:09:28.43\00:09:33.87 small glimmers of improvement and reversal and I would say 00:09:33.90\00:09:38.97 that actually the results are more than I'd even hoped for. 00:09:39.01\00:09:44.01 And you brought your wife with you. 00:09:44.05\00:09:46.11 I did. And she's been my greatest support. 00:09:46.15\00:09:50.22 And how's she doing on the program? 00:09:50.25\00:09:52.52 Very well. She's kind of the one who's more the gifted one in 00:09:52.55\00:09:56.69 cooking and everything, so having her there in the cooking 00:09:56.73\00:10:00.83 classes and the nutrition classes has been an extreme 00:10:00.86\00:10:05.10 inspiration and help because now we have a plan and we're going 00:10:05.13\00:10:08.44 home with a plan. 00:10:08.47\00:10:09.80 And how would you go home and explain to your wife had she not 00:10:09.84\00:10:14.64 come what you learned in 18 days. Virtually impossible. 00:10:14.68\00:10:18.18 Virtually impossible. Yeah I could barely remember 00:10:18.21\00:10:20.92 what I learned in 18 days let alone share it. Well I'm happy 00:10:20.98\00:10:25.02 to hear of your results and I know you're going to continue 00:10:25.05\00:10:29.06 to do well just by your attitude. You've got that good 00:10:29.09\00:10:33.76 attitude. The fight is going on. 00:10:33.80\00:10:35.46 The fight is on. Yeah, so remember when you get 00:10:35.50\00:10:40.14 if there's any animal product laying around you remember what 00:10:40.17\00:10:45.51 I did. I do. I threw it all out. You know I thought about giving 00:10:45.54\00:10:50.21 it to neighbors and family. But I couldn't. I couldn't do that 00:10:50.25\00:10:54.88 knowing what I know now or what I learned while at the program. 00:10:54.92\00:10:59.52 Dennis, thank you so much. We really appreciate you taking 00:10:59.55\00:11:03.26 your time and we'll be talking. I'll look forward to it. 00:11:03.29\00:11:06.93 Friends thank you too, but don't go away we'll be back after this 00:11:07.00\00:11:11.43 ¤ ¤ 00:11:16.54\00:11:47.64 Welcome back friends. In our studio Dr. Clarence Ing. 00:11:47.67\00:11:50.61 It's a pleasure. How are you doctor? Great. Every day is a 00:11:50.64\00:11:54.74 great day. You know I get real excited to 00:11:54.78\00:11:58.81 talk about guests when they're excited and Dennis is very 00:11:58.85\00:12:04.79 excited. He was so thrilled that the program went beyond his 00:12:04.82\00:12:11.79 expectations. He went from that look of despair to one of hope 00:12:11.86\00:12:18.13 Tell us from a physician's point of view how did he do during the 00:12:18.20\00:12:24.47 program. Well he did very well. He was 00:12:24.51\00:12:28.64 walking, he's walking very well. One of the challenges with 00:12:28.71\00:12:34.02 individuals like Dennis as far as management goes is since he 00:12:34.05\00:12:39.15 doesn't get chest pain, which is fine, we're happy about that, 00:12:39.19\00:12:43.93 then when we do the treadmill test, he watched the treadmill 00:12:43.96\00:12:47.40 and see where it indicates his heart may not be getting enough 00:12:47.43\00:12:52.03 blood, what his heart rate is and when you find out what that 00:12:52.10\00:12:55.60 is then you don't want him to get up to that heart rate when 00:12:55.64\00:12:59.67 he exercises. So we took a look at his tests and after looking 00:12:59.74\00:13:03.78 at that we decided if he exercised as long as he kept his 00:13:03.81\00:13:07.78 heart rate 110 or less he should be okay. Because when he gets 00:13:07.82\00:13:12.85 up to 120, 125, he has the changes that show that his 00:13:12.89\00:13:17.13 heart's not getting enough blood even though he doesn't feel any 00:13:17.16\00:13:21.13 pain or any symptoms. Now the other thing we'll probably find 00:13:21.16\00:13:25.13 in time is that if he continues with this, like in 12 months 00:13:25.17\00:13:29.67 from now we will probably find that he can get up to 120, 125. 00:13:29.70\00:13:33.74 There won't be any indications that his heart's not getting 00:13:33.78\00:13:37.68 enough blood. What we'll find then is that the cholesterol and 00:13:37.71\00:13:41.78 the plaque which is there now, a good part of that will be 00:13:41.82\00:13:45.85 reabsorbed, circulation will improve and so we've 00:13:45.89\00:13:48.86 dramatically lowered his risk for having a heart attack or a 00:13:48.92\00:13:52.63 stroke, which is, of course, what we want to do for him and 00:13:52.66\00:13:56.33 what he wants. 00:13:56.36\00:13:57.70 Now how would a viewer who isn't hooked up to a machine, how 00:13:57.73\00:14:02.44 would they know if their heart rate is too high or if they're 00:14:02.47\00:14:07.64 pushing it? Are there symptoms? 00:14:07.68\00:14:10.08 Well yes in the usual patient. If your heart doesn't have 00:14:10.11\00:14:16.45 enough blood because the arteries are narrow or they 00:14:16.48\00:14:19.85 contain cholesterol which is restricting the blood flow 00:14:19.89\00:14:23.19 through them, then we find that classically they get what is 00:14:23.22\00:14:27.96 termed angina. Angina is the pain that is in the left 00:14:28.00\00:14:31.60 shoulder, goes down the left arm and they have pressure on 00:14:31.63\00:14:35.27 the left chest. You may even have pain in the throat, in the 00:14:35.30\00:14:39.74 neck or back. But it comes with exertion or stress or worry and 00:14:39.77\00:14:43.85 when the person slows down or if they're exercising they stop 00:14:43.88\00:14:48.25 it will go away. When they get that it's important that they 00:14:48.28\00:14:52.09 know that and then when they stop they want to see how fast 00:14:52.12\00:14:56.69 the pain goes away and is able to continue with a program like 00:14:56.73\00:15:01.36 this what we usually find out is that the pain becomes less 00:15:01.40\00:15:05.63 frequent and as time goes on they don't get the pain anymore. 00:15:05.67\00:15:09.74 Even at the same heart rate or maybe before they got the pain. 00:15:09.80\00:15:13.91 Usually when we're trying to set exercise guidelines for the 00:15:13.94\00:15:18.11 patient we want to give them a guideline where their heart rate 00:15:18.15\00:15:21.75 is slower or is lower than at the place where we find their 00:15:21.78\00:15:25.32 heart's not getting enough blood because we definitely don't want 00:15:25.35\00:15:28.82 to have the risk of them having a heart attack. 00:15:28.86\00:15:32.06 Absolutely. Now Dennis, he's walking like five miles per day 00:15:32.09\00:15:38.10 When he got here he couldn't walk very well and now he's up 00:15:38.13\00:15:44.04 to five miles a day. Would he do better if he walked six or seven 00:15:44.07\00:15:48.28 miles a day? Well, technically he might be a little bit better 00:15:48.31\00:15:51.98 but you know if you're getting three or four miles a day that's 00:15:52.01\00:15:56.62 wonderful. Also we discussed with him that it might be better 00:15:56.65\00:16:00.62 for him to lose a little weight. So he should be able to lose 00:16:00.66\00:16:04.59 weight quite easily. In guidelines for weight 00:16:04.63\00:16:08.23 management what we have found is patients it's a lot easier 00:16:08.26\00:16:11.37 for them to lose weight if they don't take in any food after 00:16:11.40\00:16:16.04 three o'clock in the afternoon. Two meals a day, walk at least 00:16:16.07\00:16:21.68 three miles six times a week. Three time six is 18 so every 00:16:21.74\00:16:26.38 time you walk a mile that's 100 calories so if you walk three 00:16:26.41\00:16:31.42 miles a day, 300 calories times six is 1,800 calories times four 00:16:31.45\00:16:36.42 weeks is 7,200 calories. That's easily enough to lose two 00:16:36.46\00:16:40.53 pounds a month right there. Two pounds every four weeks. 00:16:40.56\00:16:44.57 But if you combine that with not eating after three o'clock. Most 00:16:44.60\00:16:49.10 people with can with a low fat, low sugar diet, plant-based diet 00:16:49.14\00:16:53.58 they can easily lose four and five pounds a month without 00:16:53.61\00:16:57.25 much difficulty. 00:16:57.28\00:16:58.85 So will you continue after Dennis leaves here or any other 00:16:58.88\00:17:05.05 guest but Dennis in particular, will you continue monitoring him 00:17:05.09\00:17:09.59 Certainly. I've given him my home telephone number, my e-mail 00:17:09.62\00:17:13.60 I said please send me a report every month. Next time you get 00:17:13.63\00:17:17.13 your cholesterol checked, let me know what it is, let me know 00:17:17.17\00:17:20.64 how your weight goes down. We discussed and selected a 00:17:20.67\00:17:26.04 weight which we considered to be a good healthy weight for him. 00:17:26.07\00:17:29.71 He mentioned that he's going to stick to this program a hundred 00:17:29.74\00:17:32.05 percent for two years. In two years, what happens after two 00:17:32.08\00:17:34.38 years? Well I hope he continues to 00:17:38.42\00:17:40.42 stick to the program. If he's wise, he'll continue with the 00:17:40.46\00:17:44.96 program. I thought it might have been a 00:17:44.99\00:17:46.36 two years that you picked or it's something he's committed to 00:17:46.39\00:17:50.50 It's up to him. If he likes being better it would be my 00:17:50.53\00:17:55.54 suggestion that after two years he continue to follow those 00:17:55.57\00:18:00.54 principles and he will continue to improve. 00:18:00.58\00:18:03.14 Now he also told us he lost about eight pounds. 00:18:03.18\00:18:05.75 That's very good. That's true. 00:18:05.78\00:18:07.72 For a guy his weight that's pretty good isn't it. We see 00:18:07.75\00:18:13.15 guys that like me, I was really heavy. I lost 22 pounds. With 00:18:13.19\00:18:19.16 him he lost eight. Now where do we need to go? How do we know 00:18:19.19\00:18:24.63 when to stop losing? Or do our bodies automatically tell us 00:18:24.67\00:18:30.11 when it's time? Well maybe not automatically 00:18:30.14\00:18:33.58 tell you. There are different ways they can do it. They 00:18:33.61\00:18:37.65 calculate out something called the body mass index which I 00:18:37.68\00:18:41.62 don't use very much. The number is 25. So if you're less than 25 00:18:41.68\00:18:49.76 when you calculate it out you know they say you're okay. I 00:18:49.79\00:18:54.46 think it's a little bit generous because people, if they're at 25 00:18:54.50\00:18:58.83 they can have some extra layers of adipose which they might be 00:18:58.87\00:19:03.20 healthier without. So, in Asia the body mass index that's 00:19:03.24\00:19:08.78 considered healthy is lower, it's 23. So the American 00:19:08.84\00:19:14.35 standard is a little bit liberal. 00:19:14.38\00:19:16.65 Well I thought it was awful strange that at 195 pounds I was 00:19:16.69\00:19:22.36 overweight, but at 194 I was normal according to BMI index. 00:19:22.39\00:19:28.06 Any advice for the viewers, Doc? 00:19:28.10\00:19:33.64 Well my advice is learn what the rules of health are and follow 00:19:33.67\00:19:37.51 them and put them into practice in your own life. And as long as 00:19:37.54\00:19:41.58 you continue to follow the rules you should do very well. It's 00:19:41.61\00:19:45.11 when you stray from the rules. If you want to have good health, 00:19:45.15\00:19:48.58 follow the rules. 00:19:48.62\00:19:49.95 Amen. Doctor I want to thank you for joining us. It's a pleasure 00:19:49.98\00:19:54.76 having you here and always good to chat with you. 00:19:54.79\00:19:57.23 Thank you very much Ron. 00:19:57.26\00:19:58.76 And thank you friends, but don't go away we'll be back after this 00:19:58.79\00:20:08.64 The next deadly psychological sin is emotionalism or what we 00:20:08.67\00:20:14.14 call living by our feelings. I do cognitive behavioral therapy 00:20:14.18\00:20:19.65 and on my list of distorted thoughts there's one entry 00:20:19.68\00:20:22.58 called emotional reasoning and emotional reasoning goes like 00:20:22.62\00:20:26.79 this: If I feel this way it must be so. So if I feel guilty I 00:20:26.82\00:20:30.76 must be guilty. If I feel like that person doesn't like me then 00:20:30.79\00:20:34.70 they must not like me. Emotional reasoning is 00:20:34.73\00:20:37.83 kind of over-interpreting our intuitions and assuming that 00:20:37.87\00:20:41.14 they never misfire or give us false information. Intuition is 00:20:41.17\00:20:44.37 a wonderful gift but it's fallible so it's not safe to 00:20:44.41\00:20:48.91 live by our emotions or to draw conclusions based on emotion 00:20:48.94\00:20:52.85 alone. At the same time we need to value our emotions. As I see 00:20:52.88\00:20:56.72 it they're like two-year-olds. We love our two-year-olds. We 00:20:56.75\00:21:00.02 listen to our two-year-olds, we pay attention to our two-year- 00:21:00.06\00:21:03.26 olds. But we don't let them drive the car. They're in the 00:21:03.29\00:21:06.46 back in a safety seat and the same with emotions. Listen to 00:21:06.49\00:21:09.63 your emotions, value your emotions, but don't let them 00:21:09.66\00:21:12.93 drive the car. You'll end up in a ditch. The replacement for 00:21:12.97\00:21:20.38 emotionalism is living by principle. Remember that motion 00:21:20.41\00:21:27.72 leads to emotion. So often as we live by principle our emotions 00:21:27.78\00:21:32.15 will end up aligning with those principles. In other words, 00:21:32.19\00:21:36.52 we'll end up getting an emotional reward for living 00:21:36.56\00:21:40.73 by principle. Let me give you an example. The story goes like 00:21:40.76\00:21:44.60 this. Newspaper columnist and minister, George Crane, tells of 00:21:44.63\00:21:48.44 a wife who came into his office full of hatred toward her 00:21:48.47\00:21:52.27 husband. I don't only want to get rid of him. I want to get 00:21:52.31\00:21:55.98 even. Before I divorce him I want to hurt him as much as he's 00:21:56.01\00:22:00.32 hurt me. Dr. Crane suggested an ingenious plan. He said go home 00:22:00.38\00:22:04.72 and act if you really love your husband. Tell him how much he 00:22:04.75\00:22:09.36 means to you. Praise him for every decent trait. Go out of 00:22:09.39\00:22:13.96 your way to be as kind, considerate and generous as 00:22:14.00\00:22:16.80 possible. Spare no effort to please him, to enjoy him. Make 00:22:16.87\00:22:21.54 him believe you love him. After you've convinced him of your 00:22:21.57\00:22:26.01 undying love and that you cannot live without him, then drop the 00:22:26.04\00:22:30.48 bomb. Tell him that you're getting a divorce. That will 00:22:30.51\00:22:34.22 really hurt him. With revenge in her eyes she smiled and 00:22:34.25\00:22:37.89 exclaimed beautiful, beautiful. He'll be so surprised and then 00:22:37.92\00:22:41.76 she followed through with her plan with enthusiasm. When she 00:22:41.79\00:22:45.69 didn't return Crane called her. He said are you ready to go 00:22:45.73\00:22:49.60 through with the divorce? Divorce, she said, never. I 00:22:49.63\00:22:53.60 discovered I really do love him. Acting on principle leads us to 00:22:53.64\00:22:59.31 believe what we're acting. I don't like the expression fake 00:22:59.34\00:23:02.78 it till you make it because I don't want to be phony but I 00:23:02.81\00:23:06.25 love the expression faith it till you make it. Act on 00:23:06.28\00:23:10.62 principle by faith and eventually your feelings will 00:23:10.65\00:23:14.42 align with your actions. There's another way to combat 00:23:14.46\00:23:18.13 emotionalism and that's what we in psychology call cognitive 00:23:18.16\00:23:23.63 behavioral therapy. We have noticed that life events lead to 00:23:23.67\00:23:28.34 negative emotions in many people but there's something that 00:23:28.37\00:23:32.97 mediates between life events and circumstances and those emotions 00:23:33.01\00:23:38.35 and that is what we call cognitive processing. It's the 00:23:38.38\00:23:42.58 way we think about those events. The good thing is that while we 00:23:42.62\00:23:47.99 can't usually directly change our emotions. I don't know if 00:23:48.02\00:23:50.66 you've ever tried that but it's kind of like trying to keep a 00:23:50.69\00:23:53.83 wave on the sand. You can't really change your emotions but 00:23:53.86\00:23:57.20 you can change your thoughts and often when you change your 00:23:57.23\00:24:01.27 thoughts your emotions will follow those thoughts. So what 00:24:01.30\00:24:04.87 we do in cognitive behavioral therapy is we introduce people 00:24:04.91\00:24:08.71 to various forms of distorted thinking and we teach them how 00:24:08.74\00:24:12.61 to make themselves accountable for how they're thinking about 00:24:12.65\00:24:16.02 the events in their lives. Let me give you some examples of 00:24:16.05\00:24:19.65 these distorted thoughts. Catastrophizing - Making things 00:24:19.69\00:24:23.43 much worse than they are. Mind reading - Thinking you know 00:24:23.46\00:24:27.13 what's in a person's mind when really you don't know. I 00:24:27.16\00:24:30.77 remember preaching once at a church and someone looking at me 00:24:30.80\00:24:33.77 like this and feeling really intimidated by that and just 00:24:33.80\00:24:36.67 assuming that he was criticizing my sermon. Afterward he came up 00:24:36.71\00:24:40.14 and said praise the Lord for that sermon sister. It was 00:24:40.18\00:24:43.11 funny. It was a real lesson in the fact that I can't read 00:24:43.14\00:24:46.08 people's minds. Another misbelief or another way of 00:24:46.11\00:24:48.98 distorted thinking is negative filtering - Focusing only on the 00:24:49.02\00:24:54.12 negative. How about over- generalizing. We see someone 00:24:54.16\00:24:56.16 and perhaps he's done something foolish and we say he's an idiot 00:24:56.19\00:24:59.63 instead of saying the truth which is that he can be 00:24:59.66\00:25:02.70 thoughtless at times and he's made mistakes but he has 00:25:02.73\00:25:06.20 redeeming qualities as well. What about dichotomous 00:25:06.23\00:25:09.60 thinking - black and white thinking. Either we have fun on 00:25:09.67\00:25:13.17 this campout or we don't. What about shoulds? Sometimes people 00:25:13.21\00:25:16.68 view the world continually through should glasses. I just 00:25:16.71\00:25:20.38 look at the people in my life in terms of what they should be 00:25:20.42\00:25:24.02 instead of accepting them as they are. It really backfires 00:25:24.05\00:25:27.19 because the more you should people the less influence you 00:25:27.22\00:25:31.06 have over them typically. What about personalizing? That's a 00:25:31.09\00:25:34.30 form of distorted thinking where I take responsibility for 00:25:34.33\00:25:37.47 what someone else has done. Or what about blaming when I put on 00:25:37.53\00:25:41.37 them the blame that belongs to me? Another distorted thought 00:25:41.40\00:25:45.11 unfair comparisons - Comparing myself with other people in such 00:25:45.14\00:25:48.94 a way that I make myself feel either too good about myself or 00:25:48.98\00:25:52.75 bad. Those are just some examples of distorted styles of 00:25:52.78\00:25:56.45 thinking. What we do in cognitive behavioral therapy is 00:25:56.48\00:25:59.95 we help people replace those distorted styles of thinking 00:25:59.99\00:26:03.39 with healthy, balanced thinking. And basically learn how to tell 00:26:03.43\00:26:07.56 themselves the truth. Once they're thinking more clearly 00:26:07.60\00:26:11.13 then their emotions start to match their thought life and 00:26:11.17\00:26:15.54 they start to feel better. So living by principle involves 00:26:15.57\00:26:19.84 acting on principle and thinking correctly on principle and what 00:26:19.87\00:26:25.28 we find ultimately is that the emotions will follow those 00:26:25.31\00:26:28.85 correct actions and thoughts and you'll end up feeling what 00:26:28.88\00:26:32.39 you're living and what you're thinking. 00:26:32.42\00:26:35.82 ¤ ¤ 00:26:35.86\00:27:07.62 Well friends that's it for today but join us next week for 00:27:07.66\00:27:11.73 another episode.
