Oh. 00:04:24.66\00:04:27.16 On a bad day. 00:04:27.19\00:04:28.23 Yeah, yeah, well, mine was never that high, 00:04:28.26\00:04:30.33 but it was too high for me. 00:04:30.36\00:04:33.88 Well, what is your blood pressure now 00:04:33.91\00:04:36.16 that you are off blood pressure meds, 00:04:36.19\00:04:38.75 and you've been here a little over 2 weeks, 00:04:38.78\00:04:41.41 what is your blood pressure reading now? 00:04:41.44\00:04:44.04 Well, I usually take it when I get up in the morning 00:04:44.07\00:04:47.59 and blood pressure's running about 120 over 70. 00:04:47.62\00:04:53.07 Okay. 126 maybe. 00:04:53.10\00:04:55.38 So-- 00:04:55.41\00:04:56.45 After I walk and stuff and exercise 00:04:56.48\00:04:58.42 it's about 130 over 70. 00:04:58.45\00:05:01.02 Oh, sure. Yeah. 00:05:01.05\00:05:02.56 That's okay. Yeah. 00:05:02.59\00:05:04.10 So you've accomplished plenty of goal 00:05:04.13\00:05:06.95 by getting all those medication. 00:05:06.98\00:05:09.63 Now what about the diabetes? 00:05:09.66\00:05:10.85 You're off the diabetes medication. 00:05:10.88\00:05:12.40 Don't you have diabetes? 00:05:12.43\00:05:14.49 Yes, I do, 00:05:14.52\00:05:16.69 but my diet and exercise is controlling it, 00:05:16.72\00:05:21.44 pretty much still controlling it. 00:05:21.47\00:05:23.46 You know, when people ask me that story 00:05:23.49\00:05:25.41 'cause they know that I used to be diabetic, 00:05:25.44\00:05:28.02 I say, well, I still am. 00:05:28.05\00:05:29.93 Oh, I thought you reversed it. I did reverse it. 00:05:29.96\00:05:32.94 However, I'm like an alcoholic that doesn't drink anymore. 00:05:32.97\00:05:37.19 Yes. 00:05:37.22\00:05:38.25 So we're kind of like brothers in diabetes 00:05:38.28\00:05:42.51 that no longer have diabetes. 00:05:42.54\00:05:44.42 Yeah, it's under control, but you still have it. 00:05:44.45\00:05:46.62 Yes, it's under control. 00:05:46.65\00:05:49.13 And that's the biggie. 00:05:49.16\00:05:51.41 So now what about weight? Medical people in general. 00:16:55.97\00:16:58.22 Yeah, all medical people. 00:16:58.25\00:16:59.65 And the reason is that their job, their profession, 00:16:59.68\00:17:03.59 their interest 00:17:03.62\00:17:04.95 and their expertise is in telling people 00:17:04.98\00:17:07.60 what to do, you see. 00:17:07.63\00:17:10.07 And sometimes they can't internalize it. 00:17:10.10\00:17:12.90 Now for Michael's or Mike's-- 00:17:12.93\00:17:17.22 On his side, 00:17:21.01\00:17:23.49 he had to go back and he's the supervisor 00:17:23.52\00:17:27.81 and the administrator for a hospital, 00:17:27.84\00:17:31.52 it's a big area, and it was already scheduled. 00:17:31.55\00:17:33.94 And he bumped into this time and so to give him a break, 00:17:33.97\00:17:39.26 I realized that he had to go back there because, 00:17:39.29\00:17:41.32 you know, you have things like that. 00:17:41.35\00:17:43.38 Now he came here 00:17:43.41\00:17:45.01 and was engaged in the program and Elaine, 00:17:45.04\00:17:48.75 his daughter was here, 00:17:48.78\00:17:50.63 and she encouraged him a lot and, 00:17:50.66\00:17:53.15 you know, sometimes a child takes the parent role 00:17:53.18\00:17:56.37 and so things are all different now 00:17:56.40\00:17:58.82 in the 21st century. 00:17:58.85\00:18:00.46 She really encouraged him, 00:18:00.49\00:18:01.65 but right in the middle of the session 00:18:01.68\00:18:03.86 he had to go back and do a weekend, 00:18:03.89\00:18:05.62 so that was tough on him. 00:18:05.65\00:18:06.90 That was tough. Yeah. 00:18:06.93\00:18:08.61 And so he started out with a 3-day fast 00:18:08.64\00:18:13.26 and you go off of everything that you possibly can. 00:18:13.29\00:18:16.06 He was on metformin, 00:18:16.09\00:18:17.25 which is a very safe medication, 00:18:17.28\00:18:19.65 and one of the ones that whips the pancreas. 00:18:19.68\00:18:22.27 And so he did that 00:18:22.30\00:18:28.48 and he got off of his medications, 00:18:28.51\00:18:33.39 he was only on four or five. 00:18:33.42\00:18:35.48 Let me interrupt. 00:18:36.87\00:18:38.73 I know you've dealt with people around 20 or 30, 00:18:38.76\00:18:42.32 but to me 4 or 5 is significant, 00:18:42.35\00:18:45.56 especially the ones like I was taking. 00:18:45.59\00:18:47.70 It was killing me. 00:18:47.73\00:18:49.26 And we don't know, I mean, I don't know, 00:18:49.29\00:18:50.98 maybe this was killing Mike. 00:18:51.01\00:18:52.96 That's one of the reasons he came here. 00:18:52.99\00:18:54.98 Well, 8 to 12 for people in his situation, yeah. 00:18:55.01\00:19:01.16 So he has-- 00:19:01.19\00:19:02.95 That's not uncommon. 00:19:02.98\00:19:04.38 So he has high blood pressure, he's overweight, 00:19:04.41\00:19:08.19 he got more and more overweight. 00:19:08.22\00:19:09.95 He did lose weight while he was here. 00:19:09.98\00:19:12.77 Even though he left for a weekend, 00:19:12.80\00:19:14.24 he lost about 12 pounds. 00:19:14.27\00:19:15.74 Yeah. 00:19:15.77\00:19:17.01 But this is not a weight loss program. 00:19:17.04\00:19:19.02 No, that's-- But everyone loses weight. 00:19:19.05\00:19:20.71 When you start eating this kind of food, 00:19:20.74\00:19:22.34 and to his credit, 00:19:22.37\00:19:24.78 he tried to stay on the program 00:19:24.81\00:19:26.76 even when he was away for that weekend. 00:19:26.79\00:19:29.99 But, so what he does is he goes on the fast 00:19:30.02\00:19:33.77 in his highest blood sugar, of course, no medications, 00:19:33.80\00:19:37.18 but no food. 00:19:37.21\00:19:38.67 He was about 150, you see. 00:19:38.70\00:19:40.57 Yeah. 00:19:40.60\00:19:41.98 So then he goes back on the food, 00:19:42.01\00:19:44.75 he's sleep deprived 00:19:44.78\00:19:45.86 because he's flown back to North Dakota, 00:19:45.89\00:19:49.77 he's under stress there, he comes back again. 00:19:49.80\00:19:52.86 And with all of that, 00:19:52.89\00:19:55.58 sleep deprivation will make a person who isn't diabetic, 00:19:55.61\00:19:59.70 if you're sleep deprived for about 3 weeks 00:19:59.73\00:20:02.31 and we take your blood and check it, 00:20:02.34\00:20:04.56 we can find that you look like a diabetic. 00:20:04.59\00:20:06.96 So all these stresses are big. 00:20:06.99\00:20:09.16 So he came back and he went back on the food 00:20:09.19\00:20:12.34 without his medication 00:20:12.37\00:20:13.46 and his blood sugars were over 300. 00:20:13.49\00:20:16.59 So we had to go back on the medicines again. 00:20:16.62\00:20:19.49 But what was good was that when he came in, 00:20:19.52\00:20:23.09 his blood sugar was over 200. 00:20:23.12\00:20:25.97 And although he was back on the medications 00:20:26.00\00:20:28.62 because he hasn't been able to do all the things 00:20:28.65\00:20:30.98 we needed him to do, 00:20:31.01\00:20:33.41 his blood sugar was 125 fasting. 00:20:33.44\00:20:37.16 So that means his medications were doing him a lot more good. 00:20:37.19\00:20:41.64 Right. 00:20:41.67\00:20:42.70 Now he agreed with just about everything I said. 00:20:42.73\00:20:47.06 In fact he was so agreeable I was worried. 00:20:47.09\00:20:51.59 But his daughter said that she would ride him down 00:20:51.62\00:20:53.82 as much as she could. 00:20:53.85\00:20:55.37 And, you know, Mike, 00:20:55.40\00:20:56.43 if you ever see this and stuff like that, 00:20:56.46\00:20:58.59 I know what it's like to be in a situation like you're in, 00:20:58.62\00:21:03.99 and trying to juggle so many balls 00:21:04.02\00:21:06.59 and wear so many hats 00:21:06.62\00:21:08.30 and do all the different things. 00:21:08.33\00:21:09.82 He has a ranch there 00:21:09.85\00:21:11.72 and parenthetically he raised his cattle. 00:21:11.75\00:21:15.33 Oh, no. 00:21:15.36\00:21:17.79 Mike, don't take this personally, please don't. 00:21:17.82\00:21:20.83 But we know that when a person stops meat, 00:21:20.86\00:21:23.43 they can stop insulin much, much more easily. 00:21:23.46\00:21:25.85 Sure. And they can stop the-- 00:21:25.88\00:21:28.51 The ones equip the pancreas, we call them sulphonylureas. 00:21:28.54\00:21:32.62 So blessings on you, Mike. Yeah. 00:21:32.65\00:21:35.99 And, you know, I'm so glad that you're following people up. 00:21:36.02\00:21:39.35 Yes, I am as you know. 00:21:39.38\00:21:41.33 And, you know, Mike, overall, 00:21:41.36\00:21:43.80 he did pretty good in spite of everything 00:21:43.83\00:21:46.20 that he was dealing with. 00:21:46.23\00:21:47.97 His triglycerides went down, his cholesterol went down, 00:21:48.00\00:21:51.62 the good guys came up, the bad guys went down, 00:21:51.65\00:21:53.95 and so on and so forth. 00:21:53.98\00:21:55.52 So, you know, he did okay. 00:21:55.55\00:21:57.87 Yeah, as long as we follow him up. 00:21:57.90\00:21:59.45 We will. Why do you need it? 00:22:24.79\00:22:27.11 And where can you get it? 00:22:27.14\00:22:28.95 B12 is one of those vitamins 00:22:28.98\00:22:30.36 that must be consumed in your diet 00:22:30.39\00:22:32.57 because your body doesn't produce it for its own use. 00:22:32.60\00:22:35.44 It's only needed in trace amounts, 00:22:35.47\00:22:37.34 and it's commonly consumed 00:22:37.37\00:22:39.12 via animal products such as beef, chicken, fish, eggs, 00:22:39.15\00:22:42.56 and milk. 00:22:42.59\00:22:44.11 Why is B12 so necessary? 00:22:44.14\00:22:46.55 Well, deficiency in this vitamin leads to 00:22:46.58\00:22:48.60 what's called pernicious anemia. 00:22:48.63\00:22:50.76 Pernicious because 00:22:50.79\00:22:51.82 it's irreversibly destructive to nerve and brain cells, 00:22:51.85\00:22:54.95 and anemia because it affects your blood. 00:22:54.98\00:22:57.65 A lack of B12 will cause your red blood cells to enlarge 00:22:57.68\00:23:00.95 which keep the cells from dividing. 00:23:00.98\00:23:03.52 B12 is very unique, in that, 00:23:03.55\00:23:06.39 it's incorporated into the nervous system 00:23:06.42\00:23:08.99 and you can have issues of 00:23:09.02\00:23:10.37 peripheral neuropathy numbness and tingling 00:23:10.40\00:23:12.02 or more likely imbalance, 00:23:12.05\00:23:14.36 inability to sense where you are in space. 00:23:14.39\00:23:17.17 Additionally you can get a B12 deficiency 00:23:17.20\00:23:20.23 that manifests as dementia. 00:23:20.26\00:23:22.68 And the challenge is that 00:23:22.71\00:23:24.13 the problems with the neuropathy 00:23:24.16\00:23:26.83 may not be reversible, 00:23:26.86\00:23:28.02 which is why it's very important 00:23:28.05\00:23:30.30 to not wait until your B12 levels are low 00:23:30.33\00:23:33.00 to do something about it. 00:23:33.03\00:23:34.83 So what are some good plant based dietary sources? 00:23:34.86\00:23:38.48 Plant sources with naturally occurring B12 00:23:38.51\00:23:40.89 include some fermented soy products 00:23:40.92\00:23:42.80 such as Tempeh and Miso and also some seaweeds. 00:23:42.83\00:23:46.60 But since natural levels of B12 can vary 00:23:46.63\00:23:49.04 and may not be as reliable, 00:23:49.07\00:23:50.77 a good way to ensure 00:23:50.80\00:23:52.01 you're getting sufficient B12 is to consume 00:23:52.04\00:23:54.25 plant foods fortified with B12. 00:23:54.28\00:23:57.22 These foods include many dairy alternatives 00:23:57.25\00:23:59.36 from milk and cheese such as soy, almond and rice. 00:23:59.39\00:24:03.03 The nutritional labels should list whether or not 00:24:03.06\00:24:05.20 it's been fortified with B12 00:24:05.23\00:24:06.89 and it'll also be included in the ingredient list. 00:24:06.92\00:24:10.57 The common American dietary source of B12 00:24:10.60\00:24:12.89 is animal products. 00:24:12.92\00:24:14.27 But where do the animals get it from? 00:24:14.30\00:24:16.45 Well, as it turns out B12 is produced by 00:24:16.48\00:24:18.86 soil microbes located in the root of plants. 00:24:18.89\00:24:22.12 However, because plants get a good scrubbing 00:24:22.15\00:24:24.30 before we eat them to remove 00:24:24.33\00:24:25.89 the potentially harmful components, 00:24:25.92\00:24:28.11 most, if not all, of its B12 content is removed. 00:24:28.14\00:24:31.53 How long can our body store B12? 00:24:31.56\00:24:34.47 It's a good question to ask 00:24:34.50\00:24:36.22 because we don't really have an answer. 00:24:36.25\00:24:39.24 We know that we can recycle the B12 in our body 00:24:39.27\00:24:42.50 through the bile. 00:24:42.53\00:24:43.76 It gets reabsorbed then into the small intestine 00:24:43.79\00:24:46.94 and then it's used again. 00:24:46.97\00:24:48.59 Unfortunately we don't have a clear picture 00:24:48.62\00:24:50.72 as to how long that lasts in the body. 00:24:50.75\00:24:52.58 It may be up to several years. 00:24:52.61\00:24:55.25 Depending on other deficiencies that a person may have, 00:24:55.28\00:24:58.86 it could be as few as a few months. 00:24:58.89\00:25:01.34 It's hard to store several years' 00:25:01.37\00:25:03.45 worth of vitamin B12 00:25:03.48\00:25:04.74 if you do not consume enough to start with. 00:25:04.77\00:25:07.45 Groups that are greatest risk of vitamin B12 deficiency 00:25:07.48\00:25:10.43 include older people, those with Crohn's disease, 00:25:10.46\00:25:13.08 celiac disease, gastritis type A or B, vegans, 00:25:13.11\00:25:16.72 those who are pregnant, people who take acid blockers, 00:25:16.75\00:25:19.75 or anyone who's had surgery to remove 00:25:19.78\00:25:21.81 or block portions of their stomach 00:25:21.84\00:25:23.30 or small intestine. 00:25:23.33\00:25:25.11 Those who fit into any of these at-risk categories 00:25:25.14\00:25:28.31 may consider getting a B12 test from their doctor 00:25:28.34\00:25:31.33 in order to determine if they have sufficient levels. 00:25:31.36\00:25:34.26 If you are a total plant based vegan 00:25:34.29\00:25:37.20 and you don't consume any dairy-- 00:25:37.23\00:25:38.98 any animal products at all, 00:25:39.01\00:25:41.19 then you should make sure that 00:25:41.22\00:25:43.73 you get a reliable source of vitamin B12. 00:25:43.76\00:25:46.30 And that could be either through fortified foods 00:25:46.33\00:25:49.22 and or a supplement. 00:25:49.25\00:25:51.44 You could have a supplement like this, 00:25:52.49\00:25:55.97 this is a sublingual B12 tablet, 00:25:56.00\00:26:00.93 and it has 500 micrograms in each tablet, 00:26:00.96\00:26:03.91 and you can just stick it under your tongue 00:26:03.94\00:26:06.02 and let it dissolve there. 00:26:06.05\00:26:07.58 You can do that once a week or once a day. 00:26:07.61\00:26:11.46 But the best way really to know is to get your 00:26:11.49\00:26:14.22 B12 levels checked 00:26:14.25\00:26:15.51 so that you know where you stand. 00:26:15.54\00:26:17.73 The recommended daily allowance is about 00:26:17.76\00:26:20.16 20 micrograms. 00:26:20.19\00:26:21.44 Often times when you go into the grocery store 00:26:21.47\00:26:23.30 and you look for B12, 00:26:23.33\00:26:24.36 you'll see it in doses of 100 micrograms, 00:26:24.39\00:26:27.34 1,000 micrograms, 2,000 micrograms. 00:26:27.37\00:26:30.12 Part of the reason may be that we may not absorb 00:26:30.15\00:26:32.67 all of the B12 that we necessarily take in orally. 00:26:32.70\00:26:37.69 Given that we usually recommend 00:26:37.72\00:26:41.18 if someone is supplementing B12, 00:26:41.21\00:26:43.39 taking about 1,000 micrograms daily 00:26:43.42\00:26:46.26 and then periodically checking your B12 levels, 00:26:46.29\00:26:49.42 especially if someone chooses not to supplement B12, 00:26:49.45\00:26:53.58 they definitely need to make sure that 00:26:53.61\00:26:55.28 they're rechecking their levels at least yearly 00:26:55.31\00:26:58.24 because deficiencies in B12, 00:26:58.27\00:27:01.10 especially the nerve damage that can occur with it 00:27:01.13\00:27:03.40 and the dementia may be irreversible. 00:27:03.43\00:27:06.10 So if you're thinking of moving to a plant based diet, 00:27:06.13\00:27:09.23 remember to get enough B12 from four to five sources. 00:27:09.26\00:27:12.74 It's not hard in this day and age 00:27:12.77\00:27:14.20 to get plenty of B12 00:27:14.23\00:27:15.55 and it shouldn't be a concern for you 00:27:15.58\00:27:17.28 and certainly not a reason to keep from moving 00:27:17.31\00:27:19.71 to a plant based diet. 00:27:19.74\00:27:21.38 I'm Rise Rafferty with your life and health. 00:27:21.41\00:27:23.96 You're killing me! 00:27:25.37\00:27:26.68 You're killing me! 00:27:29.95\00:27:31.61 Actually, Dad, you're killing yourself. 00:27:31.64\00:27:33.97 With the only program scientifically proven 00:27:36.23\00:27:38.47 to prolong life by 10 years, 00:27:38.50\00:27:40.49 the NEWSTART Lifestyle Program can significantly decrease 00:27:40.52\00:27:43.38 the risk of disease including diabetes. 00:27:43.41\00:27:45.82 Done with that?
