So, yes, it did. 00:08:17.38\00:08:19.51 You did three days of fasting? 00:08:19.54\00:08:20.68 I did three days of fasting, 00:08:20.71\00:08:22.27 which I felt was necessary to clean out my system 00:08:22.30\00:08:26.50 from the prescription drugs. 00:08:26.53\00:08:28.90 And then when I started eating food again, 00:08:28.93\00:08:32.98 my body naturally regulated 00:08:33.01\00:08:35.14 a little better to the food I think. 00:08:35.17\00:08:37.02 It was a really good situation. 00:08:37.05\00:08:39.34 And how soon after you stopped the medication 00:08:39.37\00:08:43.99 did your blood sugar drop to below 110? 00:08:44.02\00:08:48.64 It's just been recently because I haven't been able to exercise 00:08:48.67\00:08:51.93 as much as everyone else, 00:08:51.96\00:08:53.74 but it did get down to the 117, that range. 00:08:53.77\00:09:00.52 That's still, that's a good range. 00:09:00.55\00:09:02.28 It's still marvelous. Yes. 00:09:02.31\00:09:03.92 Considering, I never had any days on medicine 00:09:03.95\00:09:06.80 that I woke up that low. 00:09:06.83\00:09:09.15 So that's the amazing part. 00:09:09.18\00:09:11.73 Now, what about the blood pressure? 00:09:11.76\00:09:14.37 It's gone back to normal and, in fact, the doctor said, 00:09:14.40\00:09:18.83 "I don't know why you need to be on blood pressure anymore." 00:09:18.86\00:09:22.81 And they're testing it every day, 00:09:22.84\00:09:25.29 you know, couple of times a day 00:09:25.32\00:09:26.71 and my blood pressure is now normal. 00:09:26.74\00:09:28.65 And what is normal? 00:09:28.68\00:09:30.65 120/80 is normal, mine is running 121/69 or 70 00:09:30.68\00:09:37.19 and it's doing great. 00:09:37.22\00:09:38.86 Yeah. So it's pretty awesome. 00:09:38.89\00:09:41.49 You've discovered a new life. 00:09:41.52\00:09:43.23 I have and I don't want to turn back. 00:09:43.26\00:09:45.49 No. 00:09:45.52\00:09:46.81 And I can see in your eyes and hear 00:09:46.84\00:09:49.82 because you sound like me talking. 00:09:49.85\00:09:52.84 Yes. 00:09:52.87\00:09:54.00 And you're gonna stick to it, I know. 00:09:54.03\00:09:55.39 I know I am. 00:09:55.42\00:09:56.58 My husband already bought me a Vitamix. 00:09:56.61\00:09:58.92 Oh, he did? Yes. 00:09:58.95\00:10:00.59 I said I need a Vitamix to make this and he said, fine. 00:10:00.62\00:10:03.82 So he ordered me a Vitamix. 00:10:03.85\00:10:05.38 I got you a Vitamix. Oh, good God bless him. 00:10:05.41\00:10:06.81 So, yeah, I guess it's my graduation present. 00:10:06.84\00:10:09.46 Now, when you came through the program, 00:10:09.49\00:10:11.82 you were with some 20 other people. 00:10:11.85\00:10:14.81 We don't have large sessions 00:10:14.84\00:10:18.10 but there are enough people here 00:10:18.13\00:10:19.85 to kind of coax you and prod you along and, 00:10:19.88\00:10:24.85 "Hurray, let's go for it." Yes, yes. 00:10:24.88\00:10:26.96 Did you meet any of these kinds of folks? 00:10:26.99\00:10:29.23 Yes. 00:10:29.26\00:10:30.30 Did you make new friends while you were here? 00:10:30.33\00:10:31.79 Sure, we did. 00:10:31.82\00:10:33.56 This was a very tight-knit group 00:10:33.59\00:10:35.33 and people were praying for each other, 00:10:35.36\00:10:37.98 encouraging each other, 00:10:38.01\00:10:40.07 and when I got cut down on my exercise, 00:10:40.10\00:10:43.52 they would even go the shorter distance with me 00:10:43.55\00:10:45.72 to make sure I had a companion 00:10:45.75\00:10:47.96 and so, yeah, it was a very positive spirit 00:10:47.99\00:10:51.47 of people working together even though each person 00:10:51.50\00:10:54.47 had their own medical issue. 00:10:54.50\00:10:56.49 We all worked together to help each other, 00:10:56.52\00:10:58.38 it was a good thing. 00:10:58.41\00:10:59.50 Isn't that wonderful? Yes. 00:10:59.53\00:11:00.83 Did the doctor walk with you? 00:11:00.86\00:11:03.37 Yes, and ate meals with us, and had us to his home. 00:11:03.40\00:11:09.02 It's a very open relationship with the doctor, 00:11:09.05\00:11:12.08 very different than outside of these walls. 00:11:12.11\00:11:15.89 When is the last time you had dinner with the doctor? 00:11:15.92\00:11:18.21 Not for a while. 00:11:18.24\00:11:19.78 Now that could be TV program. 00:11:19.81\00:11:21.15 Yeah. 00:11:21.18\00:11:22.25 Dinner with the doctor. Dinner with the doctor, yeah. 00:11:22.28\00:11:24.44 And we have dinner with the doctor each session. 00:11:24.47\00:11:27.28 Yes. Friday night. 00:11:27.31\00:11:28.76 Yes. 00:11:28.79\00:11:29.83 Dr. Lukens likes to flip those potatoes. 00:11:29.86\00:11:33.28 He likes to-- 00:11:33.31\00:11:34.41 Yes, he does, he's really good at that. 00:11:34.44\00:11:36.17 He is very good at that, I've watched him. 00:11:36.20\00:11:38.66 Over the years, flipping those potatoes. 00:11:38.69\00:11:40.67 Yes, yes. And I like to do that too. 00:11:40.70\00:11:42.62 Yes. 00:11:42.65\00:11:43.71 So, all right, so you went to Dr. Lukens' home. 00:11:43.74\00:11:47.37 Yes. 00:11:47.40\00:11:48.78 And he fixed food for you to eat. 00:11:48.81\00:11:52.69 Yes, yes. What did he fix? 00:11:52.72\00:11:54.42 Well, he made some lentil stew 00:11:54.45\00:11:57.02 and he made interesting appetizers 00:11:57.05\00:12:00.58 that he cut out of pieces of whole-grain breads 00:12:00.61\00:12:04.49 and avocados and tomatoes and at the end, 00:12:04.52\00:12:07.73 he served us frozen fruit. 00:12:07.76\00:12:10.98 Yes, it was delicious and so he did quite well 00:12:11.01\00:12:15.80 and his wife was a little busy because she was on the phone, 00:12:15.83\00:12:18.92 they were having a grand baby being born that evening. 00:12:18.95\00:12:22.53 Yes. 00:12:22.56\00:12:23.79 So he did it himself and I was amazed. 00:12:23.82\00:12:26.85 Mara Lee, I want to thank you for coming on the program. 00:12:26.88\00:12:29.85 Sure. 00:12:29.88\00:12:30.93 And would you mind 00:12:30.96\00:12:32.13 if I follow up with you in, say, a month. 00:12:32.16\00:12:34.29 No, that'd be great. See how you're doing? 00:12:34.32\00:12:35.75 That'd be great. Well, God bless you, my dear. 00:12:35.78\00:12:37.31 Thank you. 00:12:37.34\00:12:38.46 And we'll talk to you soon. Okay. 00:12:38.49\00:12:40.44 Friends, don't go away, we have an important message for you. 00:12:40.47\00:12:43.76 Welcome back, friends, in your studio Dr. Lukens. 00:13:20.14\00:13:23.35 It's good to see you. Yes. 00:13:23.38\00:13:25.96 And it's really good to see you 00:13:25.99\00:13:27.44 to be able to talk about this gal. 00:13:27.47\00:13:29.83 She is just really excited about what's happened here, 00:13:29.86\00:13:35.92 but I'd like you to-- 00:13:35.95\00:13:36.99 Yeah, and here she's got all these kids, 00:13:37.02\00:13:39.20 you know, and-- 00:13:39.23\00:13:40.27 Yeah. 00:13:40.30\00:13:41.33 And everything and I said, 00:13:41.36\00:13:42.42 "Where were you when I was in elementary school?" 00:13:42.45\00:13:44.96 You know, and she tells me 00:13:44.99\00:13:46.63 all the different things and everything. 00:13:46.66\00:13:47.95 She's really a very nice person. 00:13:47.98\00:13:50.39 Absolutely wonderful, 00:13:50.42\00:13:52.41 and I wanted you to explain something to the viewers. 00:13:52.44\00:13:56.60 She said that she was taken off all her meds 00:13:56.63\00:14:00.55 when she first got here. 00:14:00.58\00:14:02.33 Can you elaborate a little bit about that, the fasting? 00:14:02.36\00:14:05.17 Yeah, you know, and she just kind of mentioned 00:14:05.20\00:14:08.12 in passing and stuff like that. 00:14:08.15\00:14:10.11 But actually, what they do when they come in, 00:14:10.14\00:14:14.19 if they're willing to and most of them are, 00:14:14.22\00:14:16.87 is they start a three day fast. 00:14:16.90\00:14:20.00 Is that just water or juices or? 00:14:20.03\00:14:22.42 They give them something sometimes 00:14:22.45\00:14:24.21 to make them feel full, 00:14:24.24\00:14:25.71 it's a guar gum or something like that. 00:14:25.74\00:14:28.65 But anyway, and some of them like it 00:14:28.68\00:14:31.03 and some of them say, "No, I'll just take the water." 00:14:31.06\00:14:33.01 But anyway, most of them think that, 00:14:33.04\00:14:35.01 you know, that's really helpful. 00:14:35.04\00:14:36.43 But coming back to the fast, 00:14:36.46\00:14:38.81 imagine if she's taking insulin 00:14:38.84\00:14:43.42 and she's taking pills as well 00:14:43.45\00:14:46.11 and there's no food coming in, what's going to happen to her? 00:14:46.14\00:14:48.96 Oh, she's going to have a problem. 00:14:48.99\00:14:50.63 Yeah, so I know the doctors 00:14:50.66\00:14:52.41 that are out there, they're thinking, 00:14:52.44\00:14:53.63 "Oh, you know, those guys up there, they're, 00:14:53.66\00:14:56.67 what do they think they're doing?" 00:14:56.70\00:14:57.97 And yeah. 00:14:58.00\00:14:59.85 So anyway, they have to go off of it for three days. 00:14:59.88\00:15:04.29 Yeah. 00:15:04.32\00:15:05.42 And sometimes their blood pressure 00:15:05.45\00:15:06.74 is already better and so we take them off of that. 00:15:06.77\00:15:10.16 Now she was on two medications 00:15:10.19\00:15:11.73 that I want to mention briefly. 00:15:11.76\00:15:13.98 One of them was an ARB, 00:15:14.01\00:15:18.03 this is one of the ones that lowers the blood pressure 00:15:18.06\00:15:21.06 and it's involved with the kidneys 00:15:21.09\00:15:22.92 just to state it briefly. 00:15:22.95\00:15:26.47 And I handed her something from my family practice news, 00:15:26.50\00:15:29.99 one of my journals, and it shows that 00:15:30.02\00:15:32.61 that medication although it makes those numbers go down 00:15:32.64\00:15:36.97 so they get a lower diastolic 00:15:37.00\00:15:40.79 or lower systolic and their blood pressure 00:15:40.82\00:15:42.92 looks great and we're yeah, yeah, yeah, you know. 00:15:42.95\00:15:46.17 But then when they did a med analysis on it, 00:15:46.20\00:15:49.07 when they checked it, it didn't lower mortality, 00:15:49.10\00:15:53.32 it didn't lower the number of heart attacks, 00:15:53.35\00:15:56.85 it didn't lower the number of strokes. 00:15:56.88\00:15:58.97 And so they said, well, the number needed 00:15:59.00\00:16:01.60 to treat in order for this medication to really help, 00:16:01.63\00:16:06.49 you'd have to do an infinite number of people 00:16:06.52\00:16:09.58 and so really nobody's helped by that. 00:16:09.61\00:16:12.85 We have that kind of problem so often 00:16:12.88\00:16:15.67 and it is called a surrogate study 00:16:15.70\00:16:17.46 in my Family Practice newsletter 00:16:17.49\00:16:21.37 and in my Family Practice journals. 00:16:21.40\00:16:24.28 They keep talking about the surrogate study. 00:16:24.31\00:16:26.57 What we want to know is how many people 00:16:26.60\00:16:28.99 are still alive at the end of the time, 00:16:29.02\00:16:31.27 not what their numbers did. 00:16:31.30\00:16:32.78 So this surrogate study is to just look at the numbers, 00:16:32.81\00:16:35.35 see how good these numbers are. 00:16:35.38\00:16:36.89 But, no, how many did it help, 00:16:36.92\00:16:39.12 how many people did it help them to live longer 00:16:39.15\00:16:42.72 and these medications. 00:16:42.75\00:16:44.25 One of the ones that she was on for lowering cholesterol, 00:16:44.28\00:16:47.54 it will take your so called bad cholesterol, 00:16:47.57\00:16:50.67 we'd like to have it below 100, and it will take it from 150, 00:16:50.70\00:16:55.74 which is high down to 50, you see. 00:16:55.77\00:16:59.97 And the trouble is when they started looking at this, 00:17:00.00\00:17:03.11 they found out that actually the lower your 00:17:03.14\00:17:06.45 so called bad cholesterol was, 00:17:06.48\00:17:08.70 the faster your arteries were plugging up. 00:17:08.73\00:17:11.95 Wow. 00:17:11.98\00:17:13.43 Now, that's in my Family Practice stuff. 00:17:13.46\00:17:17.52 Was that because of the medication? 00:17:17.55\00:17:19.43 It is. It is. 00:17:19.46\00:17:20.89 The lower the medication makes their 00:17:20.92\00:17:24.80 so called bad cholesterol, 00:17:24.83\00:17:26.82 the faster their arteries are plugging up. 00:17:26.85\00:17:29.33 And all the other ones, 00:17:29.36\00:17:31.69 you'd have to treat 100 people to help one 00:17:31.72\00:17:34.81 and a lot of people, you know, 5% to 15% percent of people 00:17:34.84\00:17:39.02 are going to have side effects from them. 00:17:39.05\00:17:41.09 And some of the people like, they tried to put her on one 00:17:41.12\00:17:44.69 because her numbers weren't good. 00:17:44.72\00:17:47.04 And she said, "You know, they just, 00:17:47.07\00:17:49.27 I couldn't take them, they were making me sick." 00:17:49.30\00:17:53.19 Yeah, so after the fast, 00:17:53.22\00:17:56.30 she did very well during the fast and so we said, 00:17:56.33\00:17:58.62 "Look, the more you can walk--" 00:17:58.65\00:18:00.47 Now her knee, I was wondering, 00:18:00.50\00:18:02.13 why did come now, babe, because, 00:18:02.16\00:18:05.00 you know, you've just had surgery on your knee. 00:18:05.03\00:18:06.96 But it'd been a while, been like-- 00:18:06.99\00:18:08.96 What, no, three weeks. Oh, three weeks. 00:18:08.99\00:18:11.62 It's five weeks now you see. Okay. 00:18:11.65\00:18:13.76 Yeah, three weeks. 00:18:13.79\00:18:16.17 But anyway, she's a pusher, she's gung-ho. 00:18:16.20\00:18:19.11 And she made friends with all the ladies here 00:18:19.14\00:18:23.36 and some of them were just going, 00:18:23.39\00:18:24.57 going and so she went along with it 00:18:24.60\00:18:26.40 and so we had to slow her down. 00:18:26.43\00:18:27.72 She talked about that and had to put ice on her knee 00:18:27.75\00:18:31.18 a couple of times because she was doing too much 00:18:31.21\00:18:33.34 but she said it's feeling a lot better than 00:18:33.37\00:18:35.53 when she first came. 00:18:35.56\00:18:36.86 As a patient, how-- 00:18:36.89\00:18:39.25 Did she respond like everyone else? 00:18:39.28\00:18:43.28 Was anything exceptional 00:18:43.31\00:18:45.47 about getting her off these meds 00:18:45.50\00:18:48.00 and how she is-- her blood sugar is now 104? 00:18:48.03\00:18:52.34 That's when she's fasting. Yes. 00:18:52.37\00:18:54.45 106, I believe. 106. 00:18:54.48\00:18:57.24 The thing is that John McDougall 00:18:57.27\00:18:59.91 talked to us this summer 00:18:59.94\00:19:03.51 and we Skyped him in and he says, 00:19:03.54\00:19:05.81 "Look, if you're on the program, 00:19:05.84\00:19:07.43 if you're doing all these things 00:19:07.46\00:19:09.01 and you've had diabetes, 00:19:09.04\00:19:10.44 if your fasting blood sugar is 140 or below," 00:19:10.47\00:19:14.06 he said, "I'm happy with that." 00:19:14.09\00:19:16.21 And she responded very quickly to get it down. 00:19:16.24\00:19:19.21 Her fasting sugar, it's not always that low 00:19:19.24\00:19:21.72 but to get it down at that time recently 106, 00:19:21.75\00:19:25.43 that's pretty amazing. 00:19:25.46\00:19:26.84 Now, as far as we're concerned here, 00:19:26.87\00:19:29.98 we meaning you doctors that minister to the guests here, 00:19:30.01\00:19:35.02 Dr. Plata, yourself, Dr. Ing, 00:19:35.05\00:19:38.62 what numbers do you look for as kind of like the threshold 00:19:38.65\00:19:43.29 to be below before you say, "You're no longer diabetic"? 00:19:43.32\00:19:48.94 Okay, this is getting a little bit technical 00:19:48.97\00:19:51.07 but the A1C shows what you've done 00:19:51.10\00:19:54.53 during the last three months. 00:19:54.56\00:19:56.80 Right, that's more important 00:19:56.83\00:19:58.56 than what you're doing right now. 00:19:58.59\00:20:00.09 Yeah, to see what that is. 00:20:00.12\00:20:01.33 But the problem is that and I probably 00:20:01.36\00:20:04.18 mentioned this many times, 00:20:04.21\00:20:05.79 when they got them down into the normal range 00:20:05.82\00:20:07.98 by pushing more insulin and more of the ones 00:20:08.01\00:20:10.96 that whip the pancreas, 00:20:10.99\00:20:12.95 then they found out that they lost 20-25% more people 00:20:12.98\00:20:17.88 with cardiovascular disease. 00:20:17.91\00:20:20.36 And so the cardiologist, Dr. James Doug, 00:20:20.39\00:20:24.27 he was following the one that we did here in America. 00:20:24.30\00:20:27.13 He says, "This is very confusing and very distressing. 00:20:27.16\00:20:30.16 For 50 years we've been telling the patients, 00:20:30.19\00:20:32.83 get that low, that's the thing that's going to help the most. 00:20:32.86\00:20:36.30 But when they do it with lifestyle, 00:20:36.33\00:20:37.97 they get it low, they're not on the medicines. 00:20:38.00\00:20:40.24 Why would this be? 00:20:40.27\00:20:41.52 Because the insulin 00:20:41.55\00:20:42.78 tends to make their arteries plug up faster, you know. 00:20:42.81\00:20:46.94 The insulin does? 00:20:46.97\00:20:48.13 Yeah, it's what we call atherogenic. 00:20:48.16\00:20:50.62 You get more and the other thing 00:20:50.65\00:20:53.40 is they can't lose weight, so their diabetes continues on 00:20:53.43\00:20:57.60 and all these things are happening, 00:20:57.63\00:20:59.07 so that's why I'm so excited 00:20:59.10\00:21:01.90 to be able to tell people about this. 00:21:01.93\00:21:04.20 It's like fighting a losing battle 00:21:04.23\00:21:06.05 if you're on the insulin. 00:21:06.08\00:21:07.88 No thank you. Yeah. 00:21:07.91\00:21:09.22 So, doctor-- 00:21:09.25\00:21:10.28 But what's neat about her 00:21:10.31\00:21:11.34 is her husband's already done the work for her at home. 00:21:11.37\00:21:14.00 He really wan-- She said, "This is expensive." 00:21:14.03\00:21:18.17 And he says, "Yes, but what will I do 00:21:18.20\00:21:20.52 when I don't have you any anymore?" 00:21:20.55\00:21:22.72 So that was a good deal. 00:21:22.75\00:21:25.33 Yeah, my question is now, 00:21:25.36\00:21:29.72 is she the one that's gonna be not only the teacher 00:21:29.75\00:21:34.23 in her school but in her community? 00:21:34.26\00:21:37.32 Is she gonna be like a, what I want to say, 00:21:37.35\00:21:41.98 an angel for the Newstart program? 00:21:42.01\00:21:44.72 Well, the thing is at first, 00:21:44.75\00:21:46.10 they get too excited but then after that, 00:21:46.13\00:21:50.41 you know, they realize that 00:21:50.44\00:21:51.48 they should back off a little bit. 00:21:51.51\00:21:52.78 Yeah, but she's already got people that she wants to come. 00:21:52.81\00:21:55.79 Including her husband, she's already got him. 00:21:55.82\00:21:58.09 Yeah, and also other relatives and friends. 00:21:58.12\00:22:01.05 Yeah, she's already working on them 00:22:01.08\00:22:02.88 and she realized what it would do for them as well. 00:22:02.91\00:22:05.89 But the thing is that she needed emphasize 00:22:05.92\00:22:10.32 that the exercise was so important. 00:22:10.35\00:22:12.65 And that's what I wish she'd said. 00:22:12.68\00:22:16.05 We're running out of time, doc, 00:22:16.08\00:22:17.53 I want to thank you for being with us. 00:22:17.56\00:22:19.35 So good. 00:22:19.38\00:22:20.45 And God bless you and your work. 00:22:20.48\00:22:22.30 Friends, don't go away. We have a tip for you. 00:22:22.33\00:22:25.54 Welcome to "Ask the Doctor." 00:23:14.08\00:23:15.71 I'm Dr. David DeRose taking your questions again 00:23:15.74\00:23:18.61 on today's edition of the program. 00:23:18.64\00:23:20.81 We're going to a question from Canada, 00:23:20.84\00:23:23.15 Danny asks Winnipeg this very relevant 00:23:23.18\00:23:27.07 and practical question. 00:23:27.10\00:23:28.78 Is juicing fruits and vegetables 00:23:28.81\00:23:31.29 an effective way to get my five servings 00:23:31.32\00:23:34.31 of fruits and vegetables per day? 00:23:34.34\00:23:37.43 Well, first of Danny, let me command you 00:23:37.46\00:23:39.08 you've gotten that message 00:23:39.11\00:23:40.40 that public professionals have been trying to get out 00:23:40.43\00:23:43.09 for many years and that is we need 00:23:43.12\00:23:44.94 to be getting a minimum of five servings 00:23:44.97\00:23:46.89 of fruits and vegetables a day. 00:23:46.92\00:23:48.11 Many are pushing that number up to 9 or more, 00:23:48.14\00:23:50.99 but your perplexity is exactly 00:23:51.02\00:23:53.59 what many people are at and there are simply saying, 00:23:53.62\00:23:55.60 "How can I get all this in, should I just start juicing." 00:23:55.63\00:23:58.59 I know it's become very popular 00:23:58.62\00:24:00.30 but let me tell you many of the patients 00:24:00.33\00:24:02.10 that I see in my clinic their problem 00:24:02.13\00:24:04.19 is not so much what they're eating 00:24:04.22\00:24:07.59 as how much they're eating in total calories. 00:24:07.62\00:24:11.00 When it comes to juices there's an intrinsic problem. 00:24:11.03\00:24:13.97 If we're eating our plant foods or any food 00:24:14.00\00:24:16.88 as a whole food as we're chewing that food 00:24:16.91\00:24:19.58 we're getting a lot more satiety 00:24:19.61\00:24:21.21 a lot more satisfaction from the food 00:24:21.24\00:24:23.18 that if we do reduce it to let's say 00:24:23.21\00:24:25.29 a pureed state or even a juice state. 00:24:25.32\00:24:29.89 Let me give you some inside into this, 00:24:29.92\00:24:31.85 classic study was done many years ago 00:24:31.88\00:24:33.90 they took apples had volunteers in this study 00:24:33.93\00:24:37.49 eat the same number of calories 00:24:37.52\00:24:39.10 as whole apples then compared it 00:24:39.13\00:24:41.04 to apple sauce or apple puree 00:24:41.07\00:24:43.61 and then compared that to apple juice. 00:24:43.64\00:24:46.06 What they found is those who ate the whole apples 00:24:46.09\00:24:48.06 for a given number of calories 00:24:48.09\00:24:49.66 those whole apples gave them much more satisfaction 00:24:49.69\00:24:52.59 and held them much longer before they wanted to eat again 00:24:52.62\00:24:55.78 as compared to the apple sauce. 00:24:55.81\00:24:57.69 What do you think fared the worst? 00:24:57.72\00:24:59.43 Yes, the apple juice. 00:24:59.46\00:25:01.55 Bottom-line the more juices you eat 00:25:01.58\00:25:03.33 you'll tend to take in more calories, 00:25:03.36\00:25:05.49 which will often make it more difficult for you 00:25:05.52\00:25:07.76 to trim down if you're carrying some extra pounds. 00:25:07.79\00:25:09.95 So in another way if you're an athlete 00:25:09.98\00:25:11.83 your doing a lot of exercises 00:25:11.86\00:25:13.48 you're on a vigorous training program 00:25:13.51\00:25:15.57 juice actually could be added to your program sometimes 00:25:15.60\00:25:18.79 they have people take it a half an hour 00:25:18.82\00:25:20.35 before their meal so it doesn't interfere 00:25:20.38\00:25:22.44 with their appetite too much 00:25:22.47\00:25:23.75 and doesn't really give them the effect of an added meal 00:25:23.78\00:25:27.57 but kind of extends the benefits of a given meal 00:25:27.60\00:25:29.96 can get some more calories in that way 00:25:29.99\00:25:31.71 so sometimes I will in usual circumstances, I say unusual 00:25:31.74\00:25:35.65 because most of my patients are not athletes. 00:25:35.68\00:25:37.98 They're people that are trying to trim down 00:25:38.01\00:25:39.31 and so the message is to cut back on the juices 00:25:39.34\00:25:41.90 rather than increasing it. 00:25:41.93\00:25:43.30 Let me tell you another concern 00:25:43.33\00:25:44.46 I have that I don't hear many people speaking about 00:25:44.49\00:25:46.61 is probably on the tip of some of your tongues 00:25:46.64\00:25:48.72 it actually has to do with your tongue 00:25:48.75\00:25:50.07 and your mouth it's something called urogastrone, 00:25:50.10\00:25:53.03 I know I took the words 00:25:53.06\00:25:54.16 right out of your mouth, didn't I. 00:25:54.19\00:25:55.43 Urogastrone is actually a compound 00:25:55.46\00:25:57.85 that is made in the mouth when you chew your food, 00:25:57.88\00:26:00.65 it's important for optimal gastrointestinal health. 00:26:00.68\00:26:04.21 If you want a healthy stomach, stomach lining. 00:26:04.24\00:26:06.68 By the way we've got an epidemic 00:26:06.71\00:26:08.42 in our country of gastrointestinal problems 00:26:08.45\00:26:10.99 something that can help is making more urogastrone. 00:26:11.02\00:26:13.69 How do you make more of it? 00:26:13.72\00:26:14.75 You simply chew your food thoroughly, isn't it amazing. 00:26:14.78\00:26:18.31 So again juices bypass that natural protective mechanism. 00:26:18.34\00:26:23.19 Juices also can have some deleterious 00:26:23.22\00:26:25.23 affects on your blood sugar. 00:26:25.26\00:26:26.77 What's the bottom-line, for the average person I say, 00:26:26.80\00:26:29.29 "Eat your foods and vegetables definitely 00:26:29.32\00:26:31.90 but eat them as whole foods 00:26:31.93\00:26:33.37 that's what I do on a regular basis 00:26:33.40\00:26:35.35 that's what I recommend my patients too. 00:26:35.38\00:26:37.23 If you've got an unusual situation 00:26:37.26\00:26:38.96 or you're trying to increase your calories 00:26:38.99\00:26:40.96 or you're on some kind of a special fast 00:26:40.99\00:26:42.71 or something under doctor supervision 00:26:42.74\00:26:44.69 there may be a place there of course for juices, 00:26:44.72\00:26:47.24 but in general not the best thing 00:26:47.27\00:26:49.66 in my experience or in the research literatures 00:26:49.69\00:26:52.99 experience to include in your program." 00:26:53.02\00:26:55.72 I'm Dr. David DeRose, 00:26:55.75\00:26:57.06 the show is called "Ask the Doctor" 00:26:57.09\00:26:58.84 you can be included, 00:26:58.87\00:27:00.16 at least your questions can simply 00:27:00.19\00:27:01.55 by sending them to ask@lifeandhealth.org. 00:27:01.58\00:27:06.99 You are killing me. 00:27:10.14\00:27:11.82 Actually, dad, you are killing yourself. 00:27:11.85\00:27:14.31 With the only program scientifically 00:27:16.38\00:27:18.34 proven to prolong life by 10 years, 00:27:18.37\00:27:20.60 the Newstart Lifestyle Program can significantly 00:27:20.63\00:27:23.18 decrease the risk of disease, including diabetes. 00:27:23.21\00:27:26.19 You're done with that?
