Thank you. 00:03:47.71\00:03:48.83 It's good to see you again. 00:03:48.86\00:03:51.05 It's good to be back. 00:03:51.08\00:03:52.34 I mean, in some ways, in some ways it's not 00:03:52.37\00:03:55.89 but I enjoy your company a lot. 00:03:55.92\00:03:58.18 Thanks. 00:03:58.21\00:03:59.29 And I know you have a story to share with us 00:03:59.32\00:04:02.59 because you've not only come through 00:04:02.62\00:04:04.95 the Newstart program once, you've done it twice. 00:04:04.98\00:04:08.24 That's true. Why did you do it twice? 00:04:08.27\00:04:12.36 Well, I didn't plan it that way, Ron. 00:04:12.39\00:04:16.48 In 2013 I had a pretty serious injury. 00:04:16.51\00:04:20.84 I ruptured my Achilles 00:04:20.87\00:04:23.15 so that I couldn't walk for three months. 00:04:23.18\00:04:26.84 The other was a serious family tragedy 00:04:26.87\00:04:30.06 that was devastating for me. 00:04:30.09\00:04:33.07 With the combination of both you could say I lost my way. 00:04:33.10\00:04:38.18 And I'm not returning here the way I was the first time 00:04:38.21\00:04:43.32 in terms of the severity of my illnesses 00:04:43.35\00:04:46.21 but I came here because this is where I knew 00:04:46.24\00:04:48.06 I wanted to be to get back on track 00:04:48.09\00:04:50.81 and to get my health where I need it to be. 00:04:50.84\00:04:56.03 Yeah, now when you at first-- 00:04:56.06\00:04:57.89 Rick, I know you are dealing with some neuropathy? 00:04:57.92\00:05:00.46 Correct. 00:05:00.49\00:05:01.53 Did that actually comeback that you were 00:05:01.56\00:05:03.93 starting to get numbness in your feet 00:05:03.96\00:05:06.14 and your hands or where? 00:05:06.17\00:05:07.97 The numbness never left. 00:05:08.00\00:05:09.47 It was degraded to the point where I was now 00:05:09.50\00:05:14.23 more below my knees 00:05:14.26\00:05:16.32 but with the stress of the family, 00:05:16.35\00:05:18.36 the injury it just seemed to be mounting a large comeback. 00:05:18.39\00:05:24.58 And so those things were indicators that 00:05:24.61\00:05:28.43 they reminded me where I was 00:05:28.46\00:05:30.34 and what I had to do to get back. 00:05:30.37\00:05:32.23 Now what's that from, what was the numbness from? 00:05:32.26\00:05:35.19 To this day there still is no diagnoses. 00:05:35.22\00:05:37.21 The doctors here don't know. 00:05:37.24\00:05:38.45 They call it fibromyalgia. 00:05:38.48\00:05:40.35 They could call it MS, they could call it-- 00:05:40.38\00:05:41.80 MS or whatever. 00:05:41.83\00:05:43.48 Someday and I hopefully it doesn't happen 00:05:43.51\00:05:45.25 that there will be a diagnoses. 00:05:45.28\00:05:46.32 Yes. 00:05:46.35\00:05:47.38 I would prefer they're not big diagnoses 00:05:47.41\00:05:49.07 and I whip this thing with God's help. 00:05:49.10\00:05:52.46 Now Rick, we know that you got 00:05:52.49\00:05:55.81 I use the term "not to loosely," 00:05:55.84\00:05:58.92 better the first time you are here. 00:05:58.95\00:06:01.68 Is it your hopes to get better this time 00:06:01.71\00:06:04.68 and if that's the case my mind tells me if you got better 00:06:04.71\00:06:09.65 if you just stuck with this thing 00:06:09.68\00:06:12.37 drop the few more lbs, really hit this thing hard, 00:06:12.40\00:06:16.38 start walking and every thing, 00:06:16.41\00:06:18.27 wouldn't in fact correct itself? 00:06:18.30\00:06:20.90 I think so. I believe so. 00:06:20.93\00:06:22.98 I was hoping you would say that 00:06:23.01\00:06:24.73 because there is a sense that is so and-- 00:06:24.76\00:06:31.91 so you were here once, 00:06:31.94\00:06:33.34 you come back the second time. 00:06:33.37\00:06:35.06 We know why you went off track, 00:06:35.09\00:06:38.61 now you're here to get back on track. 00:06:38.64\00:06:40.72 What are you gonna do different this time? 00:06:40.75\00:06:44.06 Well, you know, I think when I was here the first time 00:06:44.09\00:06:46.73 I was happy with what I had. 00:06:46.76\00:06:48.57 In other words, there is such a thing or a word 00:06:48.60\00:06:51.17 as its good enough. 00:06:51.20\00:06:52.69 Yeah. 00:06:52.72\00:06:53.75 And I think I realized that good enough 00:06:53.78\00:06:55.47 wasn't really good enough for me. 00:06:55.50\00:06:58.82 And it didn't take much of a punch 00:06:58.85\00:07:00.97 from life to knock me down. 00:07:01.00\00:07:05.05 And so doing it the second time 00:07:05.08\00:07:08.25 I want to do it for different reason 00:07:08.28\00:07:10.56 in that I want this to be-- I want to keep growing. 00:07:10.59\00:07:14.70 I want to-- I want to keep climbing the ladder. 00:07:14.73\00:07:17.30 I got a pie enough on the ladder 00:07:17.33\00:07:18.83 I was pretty happy with, 00:07:18.86\00:07:20.63 but I realized that I need to go 00:07:20.66\00:07:22.23 a lot higher on that ladder to sustain this. 00:07:22.26\00:07:25.31 So that's why I'm here. 00:07:25.34\00:07:27.22 You know, that's a-- I had a visual 00:07:27.25\00:07:30.14 while you said I need to go higher on that ladder 00:07:30.17\00:07:32.67 and the visual you gave me is 00:07:32.70\00:07:35.34 if we are on a 10 foot ladder 00:07:35.37\00:07:37.44 and I would say a 100 foot ladder 00:07:37.47\00:07:40.43 and you went up to the 60 feet and you slip back 00:07:40.46\00:07:43.27 and now you are in the slum. 00:07:43.30\00:07:46.09 My mind says if you went to the 100 feet 00:07:46.12\00:07:48.26 you slipped back it would still be okay. 00:07:48.29\00:07:51.41 That's a good, that's the way I'm looking at. 00:07:51.44\00:07:53.07 I think that's where I want to be. 00:07:53.10\00:07:54.89 I want to be-- But I don't want you to slip. 00:07:54.92\00:07:56.90 But I don't want to stop climbing. 00:07:56.93\00:07:58.38 I know. Yeah. 00:07:58.41\00:07:59.56 So we got it-- that ladder has to be infinite. 00:07:59.59\00:08:04.66 Well, you know, being away from here 00:08:04.69\00:08:07.29 you do forget a few things. 00:08:07.32\00:08:08.73 Sure. 00:08:08.76\00:08:09.79 Coming back it's no different than continuing education. 00:08:09.82\00:08:12.96 Right. 00:08:12.99\00:08:14.02 You know, it's not necessarily that I 00:08:14.05\00:08:17.84 no longer believe the teachings here. 00:08:17.87\00:08:21.37 It's just that I need to be reminded again. 00:08:21.40\00:08:24.38 And it's not for everybody, 00:08:24.41\00:08:25.71 some people can do that within their own will, 00:08:25.74\00:08:27.95 other people I think like myself 00:08:27.98\00:08:30.57 I knew what it did for me the first time 00:08:30.60\00:08:32.98 and I had a better-- I came here with a better 00:08:33.01\00:08:35.38 overall feeling in terms of what I expected. 00:08:35.41\00:08:40.27 And a better attitude. 00:08:40.30\00:08:41.88 Much better attitude as you remember. 00:08:41.91\00:08:44.76 You didn't come at gunpoint? 00:08:44.79\00:08:46.33 No, actually when my wife suggested it, 00:08:46.36\00:08:49.51 it took about 10 seconds for me to say, 00:08:49.54\00:08:51.35 yeah, I can sure go. 00:08:51.38\00:08:52.41 Wow. 00:08:52.44\00:08:53.47 Where I was kicking and screaming 00:08:53.50\00:08:54.86 coming the first time. 00:08:54.89\00:08:56.35 So the attitude makes a big difference 00:08:56.38\00:08:58.01 I think in the way you absorb the things 00:08:58.04\00:09:01.73 that they are teaching you. 00:09:01.76\00:09:03.82 Getting on the program quicker. 00:09:03.85\00:09:05.76 You know, when I got here 00:09:05.79\00:09:06.82 I was walking more and more and more 00:09:06.85\00:09:09.01 than I did before by twice as much. 00:09:09.04\00:09:12.80 Rick, what would you have to say to those viewers, 00:09:12.83\00:09:17.44 there's plenty of them that are afraid. 00:09:17.47\00:09:20.98 What they are afraid of is 00:09:21.01\00:09:22.39 right now they are dealing with a situation, 00:09:22.42\00:09:25.13 what if it gets worse? 00:09:25.16\00:09:27.66 What could you say to those people? 00:09:27.69\00:09:30.28 I've been there where you feel 00:09:30.31\00:09:34.40 somewhat hopeless that you hope and pray 00:09:34.43\00:09:37.93 that it doesn't get any worse. 00:09:37.96\00:09:39.58 But you realize that your life isn't very well. 00:09:39.61\00:09:42.07 It's not that great. 00:09:42.10\00:09:43.67 You are not happy. 00:09:43.70\00:09:45.71 You think you are but until you get your health back, 00:09:45.74\00:09:49.53 do you realize what happiness is all about. 00:09:49.56\00:09:51.98 That's what you find here. 00:09:52.01\00:09:54.10 And is that why they should come here? 00:09:54.13\00:09:56.30 Absolutely. 00:09:56.33\00:09:57.75 Is there other places they could go to 00:09:57.78\00:09:59.83 throughout the country? 00:09:59.86\00:10:01.03 I'm not aware of any. 00:10:01.06\00:10:02.09 Well, they are. Okay, you know. 00:10:02.12\00:10:04.07 I just thought I bring that up. 00:10:04.10\00:10:05.38 This is close to my, close to the-- 00:10:05.41\00:10:07.28 I live on the west coast so this is close for me. 00:10:07.31\00:10:09.47 It makes sense to me. 00:10:09.50\00:10:11.30 And it's convenient for lot of people 00:10:11.33\00:10:13.07 because there is trust 00:10:13.10\00:10:15.15 because of the number of years 00:10:15.18\00:10:16.90 that the Newstart program has been here, 00:10:16.93\00:10:19.77 the number of years that Weimar has been open 00:10:19.80\00:10:23.20 which is like 35 years now or maybe it's greater than that 00:10:23.23\00:10:27.49 but nonetheless I do-- 00:10:27.52\00:10:32.41 I would like to hear from you 00:10:32.44\00:10:35.75 a short dissertation on the benefits 00:10:35.78\00:10:39.86 of just doing a Newstart program 00:10:39.89\00:10:43.19 in one minute or less. 00:10:43.22\00:10:46.96 In doing the Newstart program 00:10:46.99\00:10:49.44 it takes what your lifestyle is like 00:10:49.47\00:10:52.59 and turns it upside down. 00:10:52.62\00:10:55.15 It gives you the resources to understand 00:10:55.18\00:10:57.98 why you want to clean up your life. 00:10:58.01\00:11:02.33 Why exercise makes you feel better after you eat? 00:11:02.36\00:11:07.86 Why you want to drink the amount of water? 00:11:07.89\00:11:10.52 Why you want to get off medications? 00:11:10.55\00:11:12.95 Medications again slip back in my life 00:11:12.98\00:11:16.50 because it was quick and easy for doctors to deal with that. 00:11:16.53\00:11:19.03 If I'm feeling depressed, 00:11:19.06\00:11:21.07 if I'm having high blood pressure 00:11:21.10\00:11:22.55 it's a medication, it's a medication, 00:11:22.58\00:11:24.07 it's a medication. 00:11:24.10\00:11:25.47 It's a slippery slope. 00:11:25.50\00:11:27.26 And coming here, I would say one of the things 00:11:27.29\00:11:32.27 that I did not have the first time 00:11:32.30\00:11:34.81 is that with them getting off, the few medications I was on 00:11:34.84\00:11:38.32 and now I'm not any longer is I have clarity of mind 00:11:38.35\00:11:43.07 and that's something that helps with your overall health. 00:11:43.10\00:11:45.66 When you have that clarity, 00:11:45.69\00:11:47.82 you can attack this with vengeance. 00:11:47.85\00:11:52.20 So you have learned. 00:11:52.23\00:11:55.14 I better. You said-- 00:11:55.17\00:11:56.59 I'm not gonna do it a triple play here. 00:11:56.62\00:11:58.60 This is it. 00:11:58.63\00:11:59.66 You said, in your testimony when we did that first 00:11:59.69\00:12:02.26 the little clip you looked at that you hadn't learned 00:12:02.29\00:12:05.90 and you hope to learn that this time. 00:12:05.93\00:12:08.98 It sounds to me like you have and you've done a good job. 00:12:09.01\00:12:12.26 You have also a huge responsibility, 00:12:12.29\00:12:14.93 you're taking this back home 00:12:14.96\00:12:16.90 to people and friends and family that are going, 00:12:16.93\00:12:19.90 "Oh, Rick's back at that program again." 00:12:19.93\00:12:23.31 When they see me coming back, 00:12:23.34\00:12:25.39 there will be more coming here. 00:12:25.42\00:12:27.51 As a matter of fact there is already a couple of people 00:12:27.54\00:12:29.94 that decided to go on the Weimar program 00:12:29.97\00:12:33.11 because I'm here as their way to support me. 00:12:33.14\00:12:36.78 All right. 00:12:36.81\00:12:37.84 People who have been here or know of the program 00:12:37.87\00:12:39.92 are starting it over again because I'm here. 00:12:39.95\00:12:42.68 Rick, I want to thank you so much for taking your time. 00:12:42.71\00:12:45.44 You're welcome. 00:12:45.47\00:12:46.71 God bless you. God bless you too. 00:12:46.74\00:12:47.77 You know, I'll be in touch. 00:12:47.80\00:12:49.66 I'll be contacting you from month to month. 00:12:49.69\00:12:52.10 I'll be waiting for that phone call. 00:12:52.13\00:12:53.70 All right, buddy. Thanks. 00:12:53.73\00:12:54.97 And friends don't go away because Dr. Ing 00:12:55.00\00:12:58.20 will be with us in just a moment. 00:12:58.23\00:12:59.77 Welcome back, friends, in our study with Dr. Clarence Ing. 00:13:32.25\00:13:35.62 It's a pleasure to be here. 00:13:35.65\00:13:37.19 It's my pleasure to have you here. 00:13:37.22\00:13:38.94 Doctor, you are the director at the Newstart program 00:13:38.97\00:13:42.41 and have been for about 18 years. 00:13:42.44\00:13:44.59 Is that-- Not quite. 00:13:44.62\00:13:46.00 Not quite. Maybe 15 or 16. 00:13:46.03\00:13:47.83 Oh, 15 or 16. 00:13:47.86\00:13:49.38 Trying to finish up my 17th year. 00:13:49.41\00:13:51.32 Okay. 00:13:51.35\00:13:53.09 Doctor what did you do prior 00:13:53.12\00:13:55.31 to coming to the Newstart program? 00:13:55.34\00:13:57.52 Well, I'd been missionary most of my life 00:13:57.55\00:14:00.65 and worked in Puerto Rico, worked in the Marshall Islands 00:14:00.68\00:14:04.70 and Singapore. 00:14:04.73\00:14:06.42 And I have done both ophthalmology 00:14:06.45\00:14:09.24 and also preventive medicine. 00:14:09.27\00:14:10.86 So I've been blessed, the Lord gave me an opportunity 00:14:10.89\00:14:14.04 to get an MPH in nutrition. 00:14:14.07\00:14:16.72 My hospital gave me an opportunity 00:14:16.75\00:14:19.02 to do another residency in preventive medicine 00:14:19.05\00:14:21.16 so I have two specialties 00:14:21.19\00:14:22.88 and I now do lifestyle medicine and medical ophthalmology 00:14:22.91\00:14:26.30 and enjoy them very much. 00:14:26.33\00:14:28.30 Now is there much difference between 00:14:28.33\00:14:30.65 the typical doctor that you might go to 00:14:30.68\00:14:33.75 out in the world that takes your blood pressure 00:14:33.78\00:14:36.75 and gives you couple of pills 00:14:36.78\00:14:38.44 and the doctors that work here. 00:14:38.47\00:14:40.03 Well, you said the biggest difference is 00:14:40.06\00:14:43.34 most of them try to take care of your problem with pills 00:14:43.37\00:14:47.35 and we try to help people improve their lifestyle 00:14:47.38\00:14:51.76 because many times by changing and modifying their lifestyle, 00:14:51.79\00:14:55.69 they can get their blood pressure under control 00:14:55.72\00:14:59.53 without having to use pills. 00:14:59.56\00:15:01.75 That brings us to Rick John, 00:15:01.78\00:15:04.82 two first names interesting name. 00:15:04.85\00:15:07.93 I remember Rick because we-- if I don't know if you recall 00:15:07.96\00:15:11.68 we interviewed him a couple of years back 00:15:11.71\00:15:14.70 and then he went home 00:15:14.73\00:15:16.64 and I guess he fell off the wagon or so to speak. 00:15:16.67\00:15:21.80 Meaning he did not continue his new lifestyle, 00:15:21.83\00:15:25.16 can you elaborate a little bit? 00:15:25.19\00:15:26.98 Well, that sometimes happens to people, you know, 00:15:27.01\00:15:29.63 we encourage them to follow the principles and do them 00:15:29.66\00:15:33.67 and sometimes they do and sometimes they don't. 00:15:33.70\00:15:36.74 Something I've tried to impress upon them I say, 00:15:36.77\00:15:40.06 I don't like you to play something called 00:15:40.09\00:15:42.17 the "what if" game. 00:15:42.20\00:15:44.58 Now "what if" game goes like this, you know, 00:15:44.61\00:15:47.09 you go home and few years later whatever 00:15:47.12\00:15:50.60 you're afflicted with some problem 00:15:50.63\00:15:52.52 or your problem has come back and maybe worse 00:15:52.55\00:15:55.69 and they say, what if I had followed all the advice 00:15:55.72\00:16:00.18 that doctor Lucan's and Dr. Ing and the Newstart team gave me 00:16:00.21\00:16:04.41 but I now be where I'm. 00:16:04.44\00:16:06.41 So I said, please don't play that game. 00:16:06.44\00:16:10.68 I haven't played that game. 00:16:10.71\00:16:13.33 Fortunately for me. Congratulations. 00:16:13.36\00:16:16.52 But you know, Rick tells me that this time is different. 00:16:16.55\00:16:21.34 I think he is a lot more serious about his life 00:16:21.37\00:16:24.92 than he was the first time. 00:16:24.95\00:16:26.79 The first time he had an attitude 00:16:26.82\00:16:28.71 oh, well, I don't know, and he shares that with me. 00:16:28.74\00:16:31.99 He says, I don't know this is gonna work, I don't know. 00:16:32.02\00:16:35.46 But why are people I know for me what the reason was 00:16:35.49\00:16:39.87 but why has Rick come back this time with an attitude of, 00:16:39.90\00:16:44.27 this time I'm gonna do it. 00:16:44.30\00:16:45.92 Is something happened that-- 00:16:45.95\00:16:47.63 Well, he probably doesn't want to have 00:16:47.66\00:16:49.76 the medical problems that he is facing. 00:16:49.79\00:16:52.53 And you now, you get serious 00:16:52.56\00:16:54.93 you need to make some changes. 00:16:54.96\00:16:56.38 One of the things we found out that people with diabetes 00:16:56.41\00:16:59.33 when they, you know, if they done really well the first time 00:16:59.36\00:17:03.97 and they start to revert to their former lifestyle 00:17:04.00\00:17:08.82 it's much harder to get their diabetes under good control 00:17:08.85\00:17:12.05 if they kind of wandered away. 00:17:12.08\00:17:14.23 You know, you get a good chance 00:17:14.26\00:17:15.90 and if you take that first chance 00:17:15.93\00:17:17.62 they usually do very, very well. 00:17:17.65\00:17:19.67 If they wander back and forth, 00:17:19.70\00:17:22.59 it's harder to come back and get the same results 00:17:22.62\00:17:25.43 in the second and third times. 00:17:25.46\00:17:27.81 So it's fair to say that Rick didn't keep the lifestyle 00:17:27.84\00:17:34.31 but still what has changed this time, 00:17:34.34\00:17:37.37 have we taken him off any medications? 00:17:37.40\00:17:41.41 How much weight has he lost? 00:17:41.44\00:17:43.38 Have we spoken to him since he is left? 00:17:43.41\00:17:46.50 Anything you could fill us in with? 00:17:46.53\00:17:48.31 Well, he lost 17 pounds while he was here. 00:17:48.34\00:17:52.21 He stopped his blood pressure medicine. 00:17:52.24\00:17:54.10 His blood pressure is pretty much better 00:17:54.13\00:17:57.25 when he got finished with the program. 00:17:57.28\00:18:00.06 I did talk to him today 00:18:00.09\00:18:01.85 and he is continued to follow the principles 00:18:01.88\00:18:04.68 and so he is doing very well 00:18:04.71\00:18:06.61 and he is very pleased with his progress 00:18:06.64\00:18:08.69 and what he came and what he has done. 00:18:08.72\00:18:11.20 And I'm relatively certain his intention 00:18:11.23\00:18:15.18 to continue to do this and stick with it. 00:18:15.21\00:18:17.74 I kind of got that feeling myself 00:18:17.77\00:18:19.91 that he is pretty serious about this. 00:18:19.94\00:18:22.53 What a nice man. 00:18:22.56\00:18:25.63 I really grown found of him while he was here 00:18:25.66\00:18:28.47 and when he was away. 00:18:28.50\00:18:32.17 Doctor, what can you share with our viewers 00:18:32.20\00:18:35.20 that might encourage them-- I'm speaking of the people 00:18:35.23\00:18:39.96 who perhaps are overweight and have high blood pressure 00:18:39.99\00:18:44.66 and even diabetes or anyone with the diseases, 00:18:44.69\00:18:49.25 a lifestyle kind of diseases. 00:18:49.28\00:18:51.93 Well, those are three very common problems 00:18:51.96\00:18:55.70 in our population. 00:18:55.73\00:18:57.17 Diabetes, 26% of those over age 65 have diabetes 00:18:57.20\00:19:04.09 and probably two thirds of them have high blood pressure 00:19:04.12\00:19:07.41 and we found that again with lifestyle 00:19:07.44\00:19:09.32 that we can make a significant impact. 00:19:09.35\00:19:11.40 With diabetes and the protocol 00:19:11.43\00:19:14.33 that we use here with our patients with Type 2 diabetes 00:19:14.36\00:19:17.57 we found that about 40% of them can have normal blood sugars 00:19:17.60\00:19:22.52 if they follow the protocol 100% without any medication. 00:19:22.55\00:19:27.16 And if those who still need to use medicine 00:19:27.19\00:19:30.01 we can get that 60% they usually can have better control 00:19:30.04\00:19:35.36 with less medication. 00:19:35.39\00:19:37.04 So all in all those are very good results. 00:19:37.07\00:19:40.17 Absolutely. 00:19:40.20\00:19:42.18 And people can practice lifestyle at their home. 00:19:42.21\00:19:47.04 Do they need to come to a place like Newstart, Weimar. 00:19:47.07\00:19:51.87 Well, if you are very strong willed 00:19:51.90\00:19:53.69 and you are from Minnesota 00:19:53.72\00:19:57.79 you may be able to be strong willed enough 00:19:57.82\00:19:59.95 so that you can just read about it and do it. 00:19:59.98\00:20:02.34 But if you are like the average American 97%-98% 00:20:02.37\00:20:07.88 all the rest they would probably do much better 00:20:07.91\00:20:10.91 if they come to Newstart because we can help them, 00:20:10.94\00:20:13.66 introduce them to the principles, 00:20:13.69\00:20:15.87 work with them, teach them how to prepare 00:20:15.90\00:20:18.44 and enjoy a good plant based diet 00:20:18.47\00:20:22.53 and see all the advantages that happen 00:20:22.56\00:20:24.32 when they follow these principles. 00:20:24.35\00:20:27.65 There was a gentlemen, a doctor gentleman 00:20:27.68\00:20:29.83 who died several years back that had a lifestyle 00:20:29.86\00:20:36.46 if you will by eating lots of protein 00:20:36.49\00:20:39.94 and the people I talk to on a daily basis 00:20:39.97\00:20:43.51 they all have a similar story, 00:20:43.54\00:20:45.06 my doctor said, my dietician said 00:20:45.09\00:20:47.99 to eat this much protein every day. 00:20:48.02\00:20:52.20 That doctor subsequently died from a heart attack 00:20:52.23\00:20:55.66 I believe. 00:20:55.69\00:20:57.64 Do you know who I am speaking of? 00:20:57.67\00:20:59.22 I think you are referring to Dr. Atkins. 00:20:59.25\00:21:02.25 Yes. Yes. 00:21:02.28\00:21:04.23 By the way I did his-- 00:21:04.26\00:21:06.18 I read his book it was believable. 00:21:06.21\00:21:09.30 I read the book, I started eating 00:21:09.33\00:21:10.90 all the meats and fats 00:21:10.93\00:21:13.18 and that's just before I had my open heart surgery. 00:21:13.21\00:21:17.08 So what we are reading out there 00:21:17.11\00:21:19.95 isn't necessarily the truth 00:21:19.98\00:21:24.35 but we do have books on lifestyle. 00:21:24.38\00:21:27.50 I know that Weimar is loaded with various kinds of books. 00:21:27.53\00:21:31.26 But for me I had to come here and go through the program. 00:21:31.29\00:21:35.07 Any closing words about that? 00:21:35.10\00:21:37.91 Rather than reading his book 00:21:37.94\00:21:39.33 I will say read Dr. Esselstyn's book 00:21:39.36\00:21:41.61 and Ornish's book on how to reverse heart diseases 00:21:41.64\00:21:44.84 and come to Newstart. 00:21:44.87\00:21:46.60 Amen. 00:21:46.63\00:21:47.90 Dr. Ing, I want to thank you for joining us here. 00:21:47.93\00:21:50.64 It's always the pleasure to talk with you. 00:21:50.67\00:21:52.52 Thank you very much, Ron. 00:21:52.55\00:21:53.68 Have a wonderful day. And you too. 00:21:53.71\00:21:55.97 Friends, don't go away, Dr. Randy Bivens 00:21:56.00\00:21:59.16 has a tip for you following this. 00:21:59.19\00:22:01.04 Hi, I'm Dr. Randy Bivens. 00:22:07.44\00:22:10.05 New brain scan research has shown that 00:22:10.08\00:22:12.23 spiritual practices can actually improve memory 00:22:12.26\00:22:15.21 and may even slow down the aging process itself. 00:22:15.24\00:22:19.44 Dr. Andrew Newberg wrote a book entitled, 00:22:19.47\00:22:22.33 How God Changes Your Brain. 00:22:22.36\00:22:24.80 Through extensive research and brain scans, 00:22:24.83\00:22:27.37 he shows that spiritual practices 00:22:27.40\00:22:29.67 are inherently good for our body, 00:22:29.70\00:22:31.80 especially our brains. 00:22:31.83\00:22:33.93 According to Newberg, both meditation and prayer 00:22:33.96\00:22:36.63 play significant roles in strengthening 00:22:36.66\00:22:39.35 important circuits in our brains 00:22:39.38\00:22:41.72 which make us more socially aware and alert 00:22:41.75\00:22:44.65 while we do say, anxiety, depression 00:22:44.68\00:22:47.33 and neurological stress. 00:22:47.36\00:22:49.72 Consider this, in our goal to live longer 00:22:49.75\00:22:52.98 does trust in divine power play a role? 00:22:53.01\00:22:56.45 In a study entitled Religious Involvement 00:22:56.48\00:22:59.04 and U.S. Adult Mortality it was found that people 00:22:59.07\00:23:02.19 who never attended religious activities 00:23:02.22\00:23:04.47 exhibited close to two times the risk of death 00:23:04.50\00:23:08.76 compared with those attending religious activities 00:23:08.79\00:23:11.45 more than once a week. 00:23:11.48\00:23:13.40 This amounts to a seven year difference in life expectancy. 00:23:13.43\00:23:17.58 In other words, the health benefits 00:23:17.61\00:23:19.92 of regularly attending religious activities 00:23:19.95\00:23:22.91 is comparable to not smoking. 00:23:22.94\00:23:26.17 So does this mean having faith in God 00:23:26.20\00:23:28.42 changes our brains and our bodies? 00:23:28.45\00:23:31.22 Is it really a valid means of living happier, 00:23:31.25\00:23:34.11 healthier, and longer lives? 00:23:34.14\00:23:37.22 Well, for starters different studies 00:23:37.25\00:23:39.73 have shown a connection 00:23:39.76\00:23:41.39 between a lack of religious service attendance 00:23:41.42\00:23:44.08 and the likelihood of having respiratory disease, 00:23:44.11\00:23:47.29 infectious disease, or diabetes. 00:23:47.32\00:23:50.10 The health risk extends so far as having 00:23:50.13\00:23:53.32 high blood pressure, depression, suicide, 00:23:53.35\00:23:55.76 lung cancer, coronary heart disease, 00:23:55.79\00:23:58.08 chronic obstructive lung disease 00:23:58.11\00:23:59.80 and hospital admissions. 00:23:59.83\00:24:02.19 It is also more likely to become physically disabled 00:24:02.22\00:24:05.12 and suffer from weaker immune systems. 00:24:05.15\00:24:08.29 In contrast regular church attendees 00:24:08.32\00:24:11.53 were more likely to stop smoking, 00:24:11.56\00:24:13.59 increase their physical activity, 00:24:13.62\00:24:15.56 become more social, and stay married. 00:24:15.59\00:24:19.87 It's all pretty startling and you might be thinking 00:24:19.90\00:24:22.66 how does it all work? 00:24:22.69\00:24:24.96 Well, organized religion usually provides 00:24:24.99\00:24:28.56 a social support system that's been shown 00:24:28.59\00:24:31.12 to improve overall health. 00:24:31.15\00:24:33.57 In a study of cardiac surgery patients, 00:24:33.60\00:24:35.97 people with low social support, who did not depend 00:24:36.00\00:24:39.56 on the religious faith for strength 00:24:39.59\00:24:41.56 had a mortality rate that was 12 times higher 00:24:41.59\00:24:45.71 than people who did have 00:24:45.74\00:24:47.19 a strong religious support network to rely on. 00:24:47.22\00:24:51.51 Many who hear this and think well, 00:24:51.54\00:24:53.00 then it's the social support that boost health not God. 00:24:53.03\00:24:57.49 It's a question that's been asked often enough 00:24:57.52\00:24:59.83 that a study was conducted to examine it. 00:24:59.86\00:25:02.94 The study followed 22 kibbutzim 00:25:02.97\00:25:05.53 which are essentially collective 00:25:05.56\00:25:07.16 Jewish farming communities. 00:25:07.19\00:25:09.44 For 16 years the study compared 00:25:09.47\00:25:12.53 11 religious kibbutzim in Israel 00:25:12.56\00:25:14.98 with a 11 secular kibbutzim. 00:25:15.01\00:25:17.65 The study carefully matched them 00:25:17.68\00:25:19.55 to make them as statically similar as possible. 00:25:19.58\00:25:22.58 Yet, despite their statically similarities 00:25:22.61\00:25:25.55 the results were striking. 00:25:25.58\00:25:27.62 Nearly twice as many people in the secular community died 00:25:27.65\00:25:31.93 during the study. 00:25:31.96\00:25:34.52 Ever considered the phrase power of prayer? 00:25:34.55\00:25:37.33 Academic studies show that 00:25:37.36\00:25:38.83 prayer has beneficial health effects 00:25:38.86\00:25:41.23 particularly for the person who is doing the praying. 00:25:41.26\00:25:44.71 Studies of petitionary prayer in which a person prays for his 00:25:44.74\00:25:48.53 or her own health or peace of mind 00:25:48.56\00:25:51.54 showed tangible statistical results. 00:25:51.57\00:25:54.52 Science backs up the benefit of praying 00:25:54.55\00:25:57.13 for your own health especially 00:25:57.16\00:25:59.34 when it comes to mental health like clinical depression. 00:25:59.37\00:26:02.66 So, does God change our brains or as our Creator 00:26:02.69\00:26:07.74 does God know what makes us the most healthy? 00:26:07.77\00:26:11.40 I believe that God wants to be in a relationship with us. 00:26:11.43\00:26:16.18 When we allow Him into our lives 00:26:16.21\00:26:19.32 our brains are turned on, 00:26:19.35\00:26:22.05 our bodies are made more efficient, 00:26:22.08\00:26:24.22 our immune systems are strengthen, 00:26:24.25\00:26:26.37 thinking becomes clearer and we feel great. 00:26:26.40\00:26:31.72 In our goal to live longer, healthier lives 00:26:31.75\00:26:35.30 being rooted firmly in God and fellowshipping 00:26:35.33\00:26:38.96 with like minded believers has been shown to be 00:26:38.99\00:26:42.07 one of the most effective strategies. 00:26:42.10\00:26:45.07 My suggestion, 00:26:45.10\00:26:46.82 consider stepping into your local church this weekend. 00:26:46.85\00:26:50.48 Hello, I'm Dr. David DeRose. 00:26:50.51\00:26:52.97 You know, helping a friend, neighbor 00:26:53.00\00:26:54.90 or relative have better health 00:26:54.93\00:26:56.68 is one of the most practical forms 00:26:56.71\00:26:58.30 of health ministry available. 00:26:58.33\00:27:00.41 However if you are not a health professional 00:27:00.44\00:27:02.32 it can extremely difficult to know how to help someone 00:27:02.35\00:27:05.32 access reliable credible up-to-date health information. 00:27:05.35\00:27:09.82 That's why I recommend the Newstart Lifestyle Club. 00:27:09.85\00:27:13.32 The club is based on the world famous 00:27:13.35\00:27:15.08 Newstart principles that have helped millions 00:27:15.11\00:27:17.51 be well naturally without the use of drugs. 00:27:17.54\00:27:20.17 The club offers streaming video, 00:27:20.20\00:27:22.05 expert health advice, wellness tips, tools and more. 00:27:22.08\00:27:25.72 And when it comes to ministry the Newstart Lifestyle Club 00:27:25.75\00:27:28.72 provides a way for sponsor, churches 00:27:28.75\00:27:30.49 and health organizations to connect with club members 00:27:30.52\00:27:33.54 in their own communities. 00:27:33.57\00:27:35.91 If you would like to learn more about 00:27:35.94\00:27:37.20 how the Newstart Lifestyle Club 00:27:37.23\00:27:38.89 can make a difference in your health outreach. 00:27:38.92\00:27:41.13 Call 1-800-525-9192 00:27:41.16\00:27:45.63 and ask for your free copy 00:27:45.66\00:27:47.11 of Health Evangelism Made Simple. 00:27:47.14\00:27:49.83 Well, friends, that's it for today 00:27:53.51\00:27:55.19 but join us next week for another episode. 00:27:55.22\00:27:58.39 In the mean time pick up the phone 00:27:58.42\00:27:59.97 and give us a call at 800-525-9192. 00:28:00.00\00:28:05.94 Mention the Newstart now program 00:28:05.97\00:28:08.64 and receive the Newstart special. 00:28:08.67\00:28:11.50
