00:12 Every year in America,
00:13 there are over one million deaths 00:14 because of type 2 diabetes and chronic obesity. 00:17 This includes heart attacks and strokes. 00:20 That's six and a half 747s crashing everyday. 00:23 What's even more surprising is that the fix is easy. 00:27 It's your lifestyle. 00:28 Wouldn't it be nice if you could actually add 00:30 quality years to your life 00:31 rather than dying one organ at a time? 00:34 Obesity and diabetes are the cause of 00:36 over million deaths per year. 00:39 Most diseases are reversible. 00:41 Because most diseases are lifestyle diseases, 00:44 especially, type 2 diabetes, and chronic obesity. 00:47 Seriously now they can be reversed 00:49 and the quality of your life can be renewed. 00:53 Call NEWSTART today at 1800-525-9192. 00:59 You will see dramatic changes 01:01 in the first few days of our program. 01:03 And you will be on the road to a better, 01:04 more robust quality of life. 01:07 The NEWSTART programs are simple and effective. 01:13 Hi, friends, and welcome to 01:14 another edition of Newstart Now. 01:17 I have a special guest in our studio today, Rod Kennedy. 01:22 And we want to take a look at when Rod first arrived 01:26 and you're gonna see an amazing change. 01:29 Let's see if you can spot it. 01:32 And don't go away, because Dr. Randy Bivens 01:36 has a special message for us, at the end of the program. 01:43 My life has significantly diminished 01:46 over the past couple of years with regards to my activities, 01:52 the way I feel, the energy level that I have, 01:57 and my engagement in life's activities. 02:01 Over the course of two or three years, 02:06 my health has really slipped 02:10 and I have a number of different health conditions 02:15 that I'm trying to address, over weight obviously. 02:20 I have high blood pressure, 02:24 potentially pre-diabetic, sleep apnea 02:30 and just have not been taking care of myself. 02:36 And I'm concerned about how I've let myself go 02:40 over the last three to five years, 02:44 and significantly in the last year. 02:48 Ultimately, I'm looking for, you know, fantastic health 02:55 but I would also like to find a, 02:59 re-find the confidence that I had in myself 03:03 and in my ability to, you know, 03:06 really get things done and make a difference in the world. 03:11 Welcome back, friends, in our studio, Rod Kennedy. 03:14 Hi, Ron. 03:16 Rod, it's such a pleasure to see you this way. 03:20 And what a-- can I say what I mean by that? 03:22 Please. 03:23 You know, your attitude has just changed a great deal. 03:27 Your attitude-- I just see you more alive. 03:30 Well, I feel more alive, Ron. 03:32 I really do. 03:33 You do look-- 03:34 So and I feel more, sort of, on top of it and connected. 03:40 I am feeling a lot better than I was 03:42 I think the first time we did the interview. 03:44 Yes. 03:45 And tell us what has changed. 03:47 What happened here that changed? 03:52 A lot of different things, a lot of things happened here. 03:56 And it's, you know, I identified a couple of them, 04:01 but, you know, the first thing of course, is the location. 04:04 It's a wonderful place. 04:06 It's a very peaceful place. 04:08 It's a place where I felt like I could really, kind of, 04:11 relax, number one. 04:14 And kind of, reconnect, get in touch with 04:17 who I am internally 04:19 and who I am as a person and what I'm doing. 04:23 What I'm doing here in life. 04:25 On top of that, you know, the whole staff, 04:30 they're just such really beautiful people 04:32 and all the people around here. 04:35 They make you really feel very good and very special 04:38 and that, there's something about the love that they-- 04:42 that comes naturally from them, 04:44 that you feel and you feel really good and accepted. 04:50 Even though it took me, 04:53 you know, a week and a half to two weeks to kind of, 04:55 try to work through either my spiritual, 05:01 physical, emotional state that I arrived in. 05:08 You know, they were there to support me 05:10 and it was great to have that. 05:13 Yeah. 05:14 And of course in addition to that is 05:16 all the different things that you learn 05:19 about a healthy lifestyle. 05:22 Well, what about you personally now, 05:24 what changes-- 05:27 have you dropped any medication, 05:29 have you lost some weight, are you walking, 05:32 tell me about such things, you know. 05:33 Yeah, and getting down to that in a personal level, 05:39 absolutely, I've certainly increased my exercise 05:43 which has made me feel better. 05:45 I've been able to sleep a little bit better, 05:47 which makes a difference. 05:49 Certainly, the diet, the nutrition aspect of things 05:53 has made a big difference, I can tell, 05:55 right away that that is, and yes, 06:00 I have not only dropped some weight, 06:04 but I've been able to stop the medications 06:06 that I was on, I came here primarily 06:08 for a number of things. 06:10 But one of them was obviously, high blood pressure, 06:13 and the potential for, you know, developing diabetes. 06:17 I certainly didn't want to go down that road, 06:19 I don't have diabetes, 06:20 I'm not on any of those medications but-- 06:22 How much weight did you lose? 06:24 I've lost, we checked it yesterday 06:27 and I think it was like around 12 pounds so far. 06:30 Okay. 06:31 And what about the medications, what medications did you-- 06:34 It was a high blood pressure medication that I was on. 06:38 The highest dose for, you know, what's called Lisinopril 06:42 which is the basic medication for high blood pressure. 06:45 And I've been able to stop that. 06:48 Actually, I went through a fast for three days 06:51 and during the fast I was going cheese, um-- 06:54 My blood pressure has been really pretty low. 06:57 They were taking it, it was way down, 06:59 like 105 over 75 and so. 07:04 Dr. Lukens, my doctor said, 07:05 "Well, hey, stop and let's see what happens." 07:09 And that was during the first week, 07:10 and I've been great ever since. 07:14 But I've been walking everyday. 07:16 I've been fellowship with my, 07:20 you know, the other individuals 07:22 who are participating in this program 07:24 makes a big difference. 07:25 Obviously, the nutrition makes a big difference. 07:28 And there is a beautiful spirit that is around this. 07:35 That is something special. 07:37 We-- Yeah, there is, there really is. 07:38 I-- you know, I felt the same way, Rod, 07:40 when I came here, I said, gee, 07:43 these folks seem to be a little different. 07:45 And when I came here I was not a Christian. 07:49 But I saw that there was this 07:53 air of Christianity, if you will, 07:57 and I don't want to overplay that. 07:59 But it came through from my perspective 08:03 these people were real nice. 08:04 They're genuine. 08:05 They were genuine people 08:07 and they were-- they're filled with, 08:11 for lack of a better word, a loving spirit. 08:14 And that was evident from the first day 08:17 that I got here and through, 08:20 I would say all my encounters with the staff and it-- 08:25 it overflows into their participants 08:28 and the residents and so then when, 08:32 you know, you're-- you come together as a group, 08:35 you know, there are so many who come from different places, 08:38 but you come together as a group and you then feel it 08:41 and support each other as a group. 08:43 And that's been great, too. 08:45 It's been really nice getting to know different people here 08:48 and making some connections and relationships. 08:51 Now you met a guy here who's been on 08:56 the Newstart Now program 08:58 that I'm gonna interview later in the day. 09:00 Yeah, I think you mean Rick? 09:02 Rick. Yeah, go, Rick. 09:05 Isn't that amazing how in such a short time 09:09 we gather friends? 09:11 Yeah, it really is. 09:14 And there's a number of guys that I've-- 09:17 and women that I've made friends with here and-- 09:20 And they supported you? 09:22 Yeah, exactly. Exactly. 09:24 And there is tremendous amount of support. 09:27 There is always "How are you doing today. 09:28 Let's go for a walk." 09:31 And, you know, sometimes, you get intimate with them 09:33 and they tell you their story and how they came and, 09:35 Rick, you know, shared some of the stuff with me 09:37 and it's very impressive 09:40 what he's been able to accomplish. 09:42 And a real support, we had good relationship 09:46 with most of the people here that I've encountered. 09:49 How about the food? 09:51 You know, the food I would say that 85% of it, 09:58 90% of it I really enjoyed. 10:01 There's some dishes I just didn't care for. 10:04 And that's okay, you know, 10:06 'cause you're not gonna like everything. 10:07 I didn't like that, I was me, having my fair share of garlic. 10:11 Oh. Yeah, garlic's good. 10:14 I love garlic and some of the foods were-- 10:16 But the food's been great, and what's been fun is the-- 10:19 is the cooking school, that's been fun, too, 10:21 to be able to, in this brand new kitchen, 10:24 of course that they have. 10:26 It's been really fun making the food 10:29 and enjoying the food that you make 10:32 and that's, that's what made the difference. 10:35 Now what about your visits 10:37 with the exercise therapists, dietician. 10:44 How did the-- did they play a significant part here? 10:47 Yeah. Yeah, they did. 10:48 They did. 10:49 It's really important-- I think it's really important 10:52 each one of the people, especially, the dietician, 10:55 and then be able to spend a little time looking at. 10:59 'Cause the whole thing, obviously, 11:01 is I'm gonna take this back home with me. 11:02 Yes. 11:03 And so whatever it is I'm learning, the exercise, 11:07 what kind of exercise is gonna be right for me 11:10 when I get back home, it's important. 11:12 And the nutrition, what's realistic for me. 11:15 What's realistic for me to be able to 11:17 have on a daily basis in my life with regards to 11:22 a vegan diet or a close to a vegan diet. 11:25 And the nutrition classes 11:28 have been really helpful to be able to, 11:30 you know, as they explain, here is your plate. 11:34 Your plate is divided into three. 11:37 So think about what you want to put 11:38 in each one of these. 11:40 And that makes a lot of sense to me. 11:43 It's worked for me and the food's good. 11:46 Have you noticed when the-- I used to watch the doctors, 11:48 I figured, they are pretty healthy, 11:51 and they're very healthy. 11:52 If I eat what they eat and Doctor A piles a salad 11:57 and I, I can't eat that much salad. 11:59 No. But he does every day. 12:00 I know, he does, it was kind of fun. 12:04 We were making fun of him out at a picnic 12:06 over at this beautiful place in Auburn that we had 12:09 'cause he was able to create a haystack that was-- 12:13 Just huge and he ate every last morsel. 12:16 He did. 12:17 But you look at him, he looks good. 12:18 Yeah. I could look as good as Dr. A. 12:20 Yeah, you will. 12:22 And, you know, I'm gonna do some follow up 12:24 if you don't mind. 12:26 And-- So we've been told. 12:28 We're gonna be hanging with you 12:30 and coaching you and lead you on. 12:32 Well, I think that's really important. 12:34 We've got a few seconds left 12:36 and I want to thank you, Rod, for joining us here. 12:38 Thank you. And God bless you. 12:40 It's been a life changing experience for me. 12:44 Thank you very much. 12:45 And, friends, don't go away 'cause Dr. Lukens 12:47 is gonna be right with us. 13:20 Welcome back, friends, 13:21 and in our studio is Dr. Rick Lukens. 13:25 Hi, Dr. Lukens, good to have you here. 13:27 Good to be back. 13:28 Now so the viewers know, you've been here 13:31 at Weimar some 25 years. 13:34 Yep. This June. 13:36 This June, 25 years 13:38 and you also have a ministry in Africa. 13:41 That's right. 13:43 Other than that, anything, any other jobs-- 13:47 Well, the thing that is so encouraging, amazing, 13:52 overwhelming if you can say is that 13:54 I'm constantly reading my family practice news. 13:59 And over the last 15, 20 years 14:05 what we're doing here is 14:07 affirmed over and over and over again. 14:09 So and what we see about every three months, 14:15 something new comes up that I-- 14:17 wow, and that helps that, too, you know. 14:18 Right. 14:19 So, you know, you can't walk away from something like that. 14:22 Well, you know, I know it 'cause you've given me 14:24 some of those articles to read, 14:26 but we actually had that experience. 14:28 Month in and month out together 14:31 we have for about nine years it's been for me. 14:34 Absolutely, yeah. 14:35 And we want to talk about the gentleman that you had 14:40 as a patient that came to us, you know, 14:44 when he first got here he was a little down 14:46 and seemed a little, a little-- 14:49 anyway, what kind of changes as a doctor do you see? 14:54 You know, actually it goes back quite a ways. 14:57 His father was here about 20 years ago. 15:00 And then he's come here, 15:02 my wife has known him for about ten. 15:05 She lost track of him because of their jobs, 15:07 but I would say that he has a very depressing work to do. 15:12 Because he is in a county health situation 15:15 and there is never enough funds 15:17 and there is always more that people have to do. 15:20 And, you know, if you do that year in and year out, 15:23 you know, it can wear on you. 15:25 The other thing that I see is that so many times people, 15:30 you know, they are so tired 15:31 and this is everybody, practically. 15:33 At the end of the day, it's rush, rush, rush, 15:35 stress, stress, stress 15:37 and then they just kind of like, oh, man, 15:39 I'm back home now and I'm just gonna kick back 15:42 and I'm gonna watch some television 15:44 and after a while that, that 15:47 starts to take a toll on your health 15:50 and before you know it, you heard what he said. 15:53 He is just, you know, like, wow, how did I get like this? 15:57 And look at all these things that I'm facing now. 16:00 Maybe it's gonna be diabetes, I've already got, 16:02 you know, cholesterol problems, I've got, 16:05 you know, all these kind of things. 16:06 So it's something that, you know, get at it early 16:11 and he really has gained a lot of weight. 16:15 Yeah. 16:16 It's apparent and he mentioned that 16:17 during our first interview. 16:19 But he's also lost several pounds, 16:22 he'll continue to lose weight as I have. 16:25 You know, it's been, well, since Weimar 16:29 it's been about 80 pounds, 70-80 pounds. 16:33 We should have a flash where it shows you, 16:35 you know, and then back again. 16:37 Yeah. It would be great. 16:38 But I was like, my face looked almost like Rod's 16:43 and many other people who've come here, 16:45 that have come through the program. 16:47 But, you know, Doc, we often equate 16:51 a success as losing weight. 16:53 This is not a losing weight clinic. 16:56 This is more than that. 16:59 We lose weight, we get rid of diabetes, 17:01 high blood pressure, some cancers. 17:04 I've seen them, although we don't make those claims 17:07 and a whole lot of other things that people come here with. 17:12 Now as far as Rod is concerned, 17:14 what about his blood pressure? 17:16 What about his obesity? 17:19 Where is he gonna go from here? 17:20 What is-- what's gonna be his success? 17:23 Well, that's your problem. 17:25 That's right, I forgot. 17:28 Yeah, I'm so thrilled that you're following up 17:30 and you've told me that 17:32 the people are just very, very happy. 17:35 You know, it's not a big deal 17:39 to talk about a weight loss program, like you say 17:41 because Jenny can get you 20, you know, 17:45 20 bucks or something like that. 17:47 Yeah. 17:48 But-- no, I'm thinking more of the, 17:51 what he talked about 17:53 was how his mood and his spirits lifted. 17:56 That-- well, you could see that on camera. 17:58 Yeah, you could. 18:00 Friends, when he came on camera the first time, 18:03 you could see that depression. 18:05 I could. 18:06 And then the second time I went, wow, 18:08 what happened to this guy. 18:10 But I know what happened. 18:11 I see it happen all the time. 18:13 In fact, we try to get these first interviews 18:17 with our guest day 1. 18:19 Because if I wait to interview them 18:22 on the second or third day that they're here, 18:24 they are already going through change 18:26 and being, they are seeing that there is hope. 18:29 That's exactly right. Yeah. 18:31 You know, and to go back on that further, you know, 18:35 when a person has to get up in the morning, 18:38 rush down, go through a stressful day, kick back. 18:43 Where is the spiritual in that, you see. 18:46 And you know that from, you know-- 18:48 Years in the... 18:49 Yeah. Yeah. 18:50 The spiritual for me was in the bottle. 18:53 And, you know, since I've been here 18:55 no longer do I have any alcohol. 18:58 In fact, I was baptized since then 19:01 and a number of other things, but, you know, 19:04 I could see on the faces of many people here, 19:07 they do get home. 19:09 They are depressed, they are anxious 19:12 and they hit the bottle. 19:14 So I don't know that that's anyone in particular's case, 19:18 but I see it happen. 19:20 Yeah. 'Cause it happened to me. 19:22 Well, then the other thing in this situation is that 19:26 when the spiritual isn't there, then the adversary comes in 19:32 and starts giving this negative talk to you, you know. 19:37 And I think that that's what happened to Rod, you know. 19:39 Yeah. 19:40 He just-- it was like, what's happened to me, 19:45 why don't I have more control? 19:46 Why don't I feel better? 19:48 Why do these little things that used to not bother me, 19:50 why is this something that comes into my mind 19:54 and spoils my day and drags me down? 19:58 And exercise, you know me, and exercise. 20:01 Two-thirds and every time I hear more about exercise, 20:05 I say it's more than two-thirds. 20:07 And my wife's pysch-- clinical psych news, 20:13 they say over and over again, 20:15 you have to have exercise as part of the-- 20:19 as the anxiety and the depression 20:21 and the blahs and the blues and all that kind of stuff. 20:25 When you get the exercise in there, 20:27 then you can start turning things around. 20:30 And when you feel better about yourself, you know, 20:32 you can say, well, 20:33 I don't really need those donuts anymore, 20:35 'cause I, you know, I-- but if you are depressed, 20:39 you know, and if you're discouraged, 20:42 you've lost your courage, then you say, oh, 20:45 what difference in tomorrow. 20:47 Yeah. Yeah. 20:48 Tomorrow is when I'm gonna turn over a new leaf 20:50 and so, you know, Rod's not really any different than 20:53 any of the rest of us. 20:54 It's just in his situation. 20:59 And then your family, you know, he has family, 21:02 they are very dear to him. 21:05 And he is very dear to them 21:07 and when he is having success and stuff, 21:10 they are thrilled with that. 21:11 Well, I predict that when he goes back home 21:16 and his family, and his-- the people he worked with, 21:20 see this amazing change, they're gonna say, 21:24 what are you doing there. 21:25 What's happened here? 21:28 And he'll have a great testimony 21:31 as he has here. 21:32 Now, Doc, we don't have a whole lot of time, 21:36 any closing remarks that you could give to the viewers 21:40 that might help them. 21:42 Well, you know, coming back to the spiritual again, 21:44 we try to get the people to memorize verses, 21:48 if they're Christian, of course, 21:50 to memorize Bible promises. 21:53 And when the, when the Holy Spirit comes 21:55 and speaks to your heart 21:57 and says you are a child of God, 22:00 now you are child of God. 22:02 And start thinking in terms of heaven 22:05 and your future life and then that energises you 22:09 to try to help other people to come along. 22:13 Doctor, I want to thank you for joining us here as usual. 22:16 Well, it's always a pleasure. 22:18 It's a pleasure to have you. 22:19 Yeah, this type of a case is all of this. 22:21 Yes, it is. 22:23 And, friends, don't go away 'cause Dr. Bivens will be 22:26 right with us with an important message. 22:35 Hi, I'm Dr. Randy Bivens. 22:37 When The Beatles wrote the popular song, 22:39 "Here comes the sun," 22:40 they might have been celebrating the sun's return 22:43 to their rainy home in England. 22:45 It's warm, it's bright, 22:47 the sun is generally thought to be 22:49 a pretty happy component in our every day lives. 22:52 But why do we need it? 22:54 What makes it indispensable to our lives? 22:57 Two words, Vitamin D. 23:01 There is a cholesterol like compound in our blood 23:03 that transforms into Vitamin D when exposed to sunlight. 23:09 This Vitamin D is then converted to it's active form 23:12 by the liver and then by the kidneys. 23:15 Well, that makes a question, why do we need Vitamin D? 23:20 What happens if you don't have enough? 23:22 For years, we've understood Vitamin D's role 23:25 in regulating calcium levels 23:27 and how a deficiency can cause both 23:29 rickets and osteoporosis. 23:31 Today, we know that Vitamin D also has an important role 23:35 as a steroid hormone in gene modulation. 23:39 This means Vitamin D can help turn on health promoting genes, 23:44 while suppressing bad genes, especially, oncogenes, 23:48 a gene group that promotes cancer. 23:52 And let us not forget Vitamin D's very important role 23:55 as an antioxidant. 23:58 Sun exposure among men was studied 24:00 in a recent cancer research article. 24:02 Those receiving the most sun experienced a 50% reduction 24:07 in prostate cancer, relative to those 24:10 who received the least sun. 24:12 This is only one example as Vitamin D 24:15 has also been shown to reduce many other types of cancer. 24:20 This doesn't mean that you should spend 24:21 every minute of every day basking under the sun. 24:25 Most people need to spend only a short time in the sun 24:28 to maintain healthy Vitamin D levels. 24:31 Once a person makes enough Vitamin D, 24:33 any extra is turned into inactive substances. 24:37 And adequate storage of Vitamin D 24:39 during summer months usually provides 24:41 sufficient amounts for the winter months. 24:44 There are two wavelengths of ultraviolet radiation 24:47 that we should be aware of, UVA and UVB. 24:53 The production of Vitamin D requires UVB radiation, 24:58 which is blocked by most sunscreens. 25:01 It's the UVA rays that are not blocked 25:04 by most sunscreens, 25:06 yet are the most dangerous for most types of skin cancer. 25:10 What this means is that by using a sunscreen product, 25:14 you reduced your Vitamin D level. 25:17 You've also done great level to decrease your risk 25:20 for skin cancer. 25:22 Ultimately, sunshine is important for cancer reduction, 25:25 rickets prevention and reducing osteoporosis. 25:30 Moreover, sunshine can also keep you happy. 25:35 You might have heard of Seasonal Affective Disorder, 25:37 otherwise known as SAD or SAD, it's a type of depression 25:42 that occurs at the same time every year, 25:44 starting in the fall, 25:46 and then improving in the spring. 25:48 This type of depression is energy draining 25:51 and makes you feel moody, often for what frustratingly 25:54 feels like no reason at all. 25:57 If you're going through this now, 25:58 go and try to find a patch of sun. 26:02 SAD is caused by decreasing amounts of sunlight 26:04 and colder weather. 26:07 Providing bright light at the correct wavelength 26:10 is called phototherapy. 26:13 Researchers have found that this changes 26:15 the chemistry of the brain 26:17 while boosting Vitamin D levels. 26:19 In fact phototherapy in the form of light boxes 26:22 radically improves SAD. 26:26 Phototherapy is an option, but choosing to have your home 26:29 in an area where the sun often shines is ideal. 26:32 It's understandable that not everyone can live 26:35 next to a sunny beach. 26:37 But we encourage you to do your best 26:39 to make sun a priority, 26:41 incorporate just 20-30 minutes of natural warmth bringing 26:44 and mood lifting sunlight in your life 26:47 and see how it works to lead you down 26:49 a path of focus. 26:53 You're killing me. 26:57 You're killing me. 26:59 Actually, Dad, you are killing yourself. 27:04 With the only program scientifically proven 27:06 to prolong life by ten years, 27:08 the Newstart Lifestyle Program 27:09 can significantly decrease the risk of disease, 27:12 including diabetes. 27:13 You're done with that?
