I could look as good as Dr. A. 00:12:18.84\00:12:20.66 Yeah, you will. 00:12:20.69\00:12:22.33 And, you know, I'm gonna do some follow up 00:12:22.36\00:12:24.86 if you don't mind. 00:12:24.89\00:12:26.95 And-- So we've been told. 00:12:26.98\00:12:28.77 We're gonna be hanging with you 00:12:28.80\00:12:30.82 and coaching you and lead you on. 00:12:30.85\00:12:32.78 Well, I think that's really important. 00:12:32.81\00:12:34.77 We've got a few seconds left 00:12:34.80\00:12:36.41 and I want to thank you, Rod, for joining us here. 00:12:36.44\00:12:38.68 Thank you. This June. 00:13:34.86\00:13:36.75 This June, 25 years 00:13:36.78\00:13:38.36 and you also have a ministry in Africa. 00:13:38.39\00:13:41.71 That's right. 00:13:41.74\00:13:43.71 Other than that, anything, any other jobs-- 00:13:43.74\00:13:47.34 Well, the thing that is so encouraging, amazing, 00:13:47.37\00:13:52.20 overwhelming if you can say is that 00:13:52.23\00:13:54.80 I'm constantly reading my family practice news. 00:13:54.83\00:13:58.97 And over the last 15, 20 years 00:13:59.00\00:14:05.93 what we're doing here is 00:14:05.96\00:14:07.24 affirmed over and over and over again. 00:14:07.27\00:14:09.88 So and what we see about every three months, 00:14:09.91\00:14:15.38 something new comes up that I-- 00:14:15.41\00:14:17.50 wow, and that helps that, too, you know. 00:14:17.53\00:14:18.87 Right. 00:14:18.90\00:14:19.94 So, you know, you can't walk away from something like that. 00:14:19.97\00:14:22.56 Well, you know, I know it 'cause you've given me 00:14:22.59\00:14:24.47 some of those articles to read, 00:14:24.50\00:14:26.12 but we actually had that experience. 00:14:26.15\00:14:28.54 Month in and month out together 00:14:28.57\00:14:31.38 we have for about nine years it's been for me. 00:14:31.41\00:14:34.00 Absolutely, yeah. 00:14:34.03\00:14:35.06 And we want to talk about the gentleman that you had 00:14:35.09\00:14:40.01 as a patient that came to us, you know, 00:14:40.04\00:14:44.23 when he first got here he was a little down 00:14:44.26\00:14:46.83 and seemed a little, a little-- 00:14:46.86\00:14:49.41 anyway, what kind of changes as a doctor do you see? 00:14:49.44\00:14:54.92 You know, actually it goes back quite a ways. 00:14:54.95\00:14:57.56 His father was here about 20 years ago. 00:14:57.59\00:15:00.75 And then he's come here, 00:15:00.78\00:15:02.79 my wife has known him for about ten. 00:15:02.82\00:15:05.07 She lost track of him because of their jobs, 00:15:05.10\00:15:07.82 but I would say that he has a very depressing work to do. 00:15:07.85\00:15:12.86 Because he is in a county health situation 00:15:12.89\00:15:15.79 and there is never enough funds 00:15:15.82\00:15:17.78 and there is always more that people have to do. 00:15:17.81\00:15:20.42 And, you know, if you do that year in and year out, 00:15:20.45\00:15:23.10 you know, it can wear on you. 00:15:23.13\00:15:25.77 The other thing that I see is that so many times people, 00:15:25.80\00:15:30.25 you know, they are so tired 00:15:30.28\00:15:31.77 and this is everybody, practically. 00:15:31.80\00:15:33.96 At the end of the day, it's rush, rush, rush, 00:15:33.99\00:15:35.91 stress, stress, stress 00:15:35.94\00:15:37.18 and then they just kind of like, oh, man, 00:15:37.21\00:15:39.61 I'm back home now and I'm just gonna kick back 00:15:39.64\00:15:42.90 and I'm gonna watch some television 00:15:42.93\00:15:44.33 and after a while that, that 00:15:44.36\00:15:47.28 starts to take a toll on your health 00:15:47.31\00:15:50.25 and before you know it, you heard what he said. 00:15:50.28\00:15:53.18 He is just, you know, like, wow, how did I get like this? 00:15:53.21\00:15:57.71 And look at all these things that I'm facing now. 00:15:57.74\00:16:00.21 Maybe it's gonna be diabetes, I've already got, 00:16:00.24\00:16:02.67 you know, cholesterol problems, I've got, 00:16:02.70\00:16:05.16 you know, all these kind of things. 00:16:05.19\00:16:06.75 So it's something that, you know, get at it early 00:16:06.78\00:16:11.50 and he really has gained a lot of weight. 00:16:11.53\00:16:15.08 Yeah. 00:16:15.11\00:16:16.15 It's apparent and he mentioned that 00:16:16.18\00:16:17.88 during our first interview. 00:16:17.91\00:16:19.83 But he's also lost several pounds, 00:16:19.86\00:16:22.52 he'll continue to lose weight as I have. 00:16:22.55\00:16:25.55 You know, it's been, well, since Weimar 00:16:25.58\00:16:29.09 it's been about 80 pounds, 70-80 pounds. 00:16:29.12\00:16:33.25 We should have a flash where it shows you, 00:16:33.28\00:16:35.68 you know, and then back again. 00:16:35.71\00:16:37.24 Yeah. It would be great. 00:16:37.27\00:16:38.82 But I was like, my face looked almost like Rod's 00:16:38.85\00:16:43.18 and many other people who've come here, 00:16:43.21\00:16:44.98 that have come through the program. 00:16:45.01\00:16:47.00 But, you know, Doc, we often equate 00:16:47.03\00:16:51.10 a success as losing weight. 00:16:51.13\00:16:53.89 This is not a losing weight clinic. 00:16:53.92\00:16:56.91 This is more than that. 00:16:56.94\00:16:59.41 We lose weight, we get rid of diabetes, 00:16:59.44\00:17:01.65 high blood pressure, some cancers. 00:17:01.68\00:17:04.19 I've seen them, although we don't make those claims 00:17:04.22\00:17:07.72 and a whole lot of other things that people come here with. 00:17:07.75\00:17:12.02 Now as far as Rod is concerned, 00:17:12.05\00:17:14.75 what about his blood pressure? 00:17:14.78\00:17:16.32 What about his obesity? 00:17:16.35\00:17:19.11 Where is he gonna go from here? 00:17:19.14\00:17:20.66 What is-- what's gonna be his success? 00:17:20.69\00:17:23.10 Well, that's your problem. 00:17:23.13\00:17:25.81 That's right, I forgot. 00:17:25.84\00:17:28.27 Yeah, I'm so thrilled that you're following up 00:17:28.30\00:17:30.82 and you've told me that 00:17:30.85\00:17:32.03 the people are just very, very happy. 00:17:32.06\00:17:35.63 You know, it's not a big deal 00:17:35.66\00:17:39.26 to talk about a weight loss program, like you say 00:17:39.29\00:17:41.93 because Jenny can get you 20, you know, 00:17:41.96\00:17:45.28 20 bucks or something like that. 00:17:45.31\00:17:47.07 Yeah. 00:17:47.10\00:17:48.32 But-- no, I'm thinking more of the, 00:17:48.35\00:17:51.37 what he talked about 00:17:51.40\00:17:53.16 was how his mood and his spirits lifted. 00:17:53.19\00:17:56.94 That-- well, you could see that on camera. 00:17:56.97\00:17:58.94 Yeah, you could. 00:17:58.97\00:18:00.01 Friends, when he came on camera the first time, 00:18:00.04\00:18:03.36 you could see that depression. 00:18:03.39\00:18:05.16 I could. 00:18:05.19\00:18:06.37 And then the second time I went, wow, 00:18:06.40\00:18:08.41 what happened to this guy. 00:18:08.44\00:18:10.20 But I know what happened. 00:18:10.23\00:18:11.26 I see it happen all the time. 00:18:11.29\00:18:13.53 In fact, we try to get these first interviews 00:18:13.56\00:18:17.11 with our guest day 1. 00:18:17.14\00:18:19.69 Because if I wait to interview them 00:18:19.72\00:18:22.05 on the second or third day that they're here, 00:18:22.08\00:18:24.39 they are already going through change 00:18:24.42\00:18:26.28 and being, they are seeing that there is hope. 00:18:26.31\00:18:29.03 That's exactly right. Yeah. 00:18:29.06\00:18:31.62 You know, and to go back on that further, you know, 00:18:31.65\00:18:35.81 when a person has to get up in the morning, 00:18:35.84\00:18:38.73 rush down, go through a stressful day, kick back. 00:18:38.76\00:18:43.22 Where is the spiritual in that, you see. 00:18:43.25\00:18:46.39 And you know that from, you know-- 00:18:46.42\00:18:48.33 Years in the... 00:18:48.36\00:18:49.49 Yeah. Yeah. 00:18:49.52\00:18:50.56 The spiritual for me was in the bottle. 00:18:50.59\00:18:53.38 And, you know, since I've been here 00:18:53.41\00:18:55.35 no longer do I have any alcohol. 00:18:55.38\00:18:58.28 In fact, I was baptized since then 00:18:58.31\00:19:01.36 and a number of other things, but, you know, 00:19:01.39\00:19:04.26 I could see on the faces of many people here, 00:19:04.29\00:19:07.14 they do get home. 00:19:07.17\00:19:09.76 They are depressed, they are anxious 00:19:09.79\00:19:12.42 and they hit the bottle. 00:19:12.45\00:19:14.65 So I don't know that that's anyone in particular's case, 00:19:14.68\00:19:18.56 but I see it happen. 00:19:18.59\00:19:20.16 Yeah. 'Cause it happened to me. 00:19:20.19\00:19:22.58 Well, then the other thing in this situation is that 00:19:22.61\00:19:26.40 when the spiritual isn't there, then the adversary comes in 00:19:26.43\00:19:32.18 and starts giving this negative talk to you, you know. 00:19:32.21\00:19:36.99 And I think that that's what happened to Rod, you know. 00:19:37.02\00:19:39.72 Yeah. 00:19:39.75\00:19:40.91 He just-- it was like, what's happened to me, 00:19:40.94\00:19:45.03 why don't I have more control? 00:19:45.06\00:19:46.65 Why don't I feel better? 00:19:46.68\00:19:48.44 Why do these little things that used to not bother me, 00:19:48.47\00:19:50.91 why is this something that comes into my mind 00:19:50.94\00:19:54.61 and spoils my day and drags me down? 00:19:54.64\00:19:58.17 And exercise, you know me, and exercise. 00:19:58.20\00:20:01.60 Two-thirds and every time I hear more about exercise, 00:20:01.63\00:20:05.17 I say it's more than two-thirds. 00:20:05.20\00:20:07.36 And my wife's pysch-- clinical psych news, 00:20:07.39\00:20:13.26 they say over and over again, 00:20:13.29\00:20:15.52 you have to have exercise as part of the-- 00:20:15.55\00:20:19.46 as the anxiety and the depression 00:20:19.49\00:20:21.47 and the blahs and the blues and all that kind of stuff. 00:20:21.50\00:20:25.24 When you get the exercise in there, 00:20:25.27\00:20:27.70 then you can start turning things around. 00:20:27.73\00:20:30.33 And when you feel better about yourself, you know, 00:20:30.36\00:20:32.25 you can say, well, 00:20:32.28\00:20:33.67 I don't really need those donuts anymore, 00:20:33.70\00:20:35.75 'cause I, you know, I-- but if you are depressed, 00:20:35.78\00:20:39.16 you know, and if you're discouraged, 00:20:39.19\00:20:42.42 you've lost your courage, then you say, oh, 00:20:42.45\00:20:45.21 what difference in tomorrow. 00:20:45.24\00:20:47.30 Yeah. Yeah. 00:20:47.33\00:20:48.37 Tomorrow is when I'm gonna turn over a new leaf 00:20:48.40\00:20:50.62 and so, you know, Rod's not really any different than 00:20:50.65\00:20:53.84 any of the rest of us. 00:20:53.87\00:20:54.92 It's just in his situation. 00:20:54.95\00:20:59.09 And then your family, you know, he has family, 00:20:59.12\00:21:02.10 they are very dear to him. 00:21:02.13\00:21:05.12 And he is very dear to them 00:21:05.15\00:21:06.99 and when he is having success and stuff, 00:21:07.02\00:21:10.17 they are thrilled with that. 00:21:10.20\00:21:11.83 Well, I predict that when he goes back home 00:21:11.86\00:21:16.78 and his family, and his-- the people he worked with, 00:21:16.81\00:21:20.95 see this amazing change, they're gonna say, 00:21:20.98\00:21:24.23 what are you doing there. 00:21:24.26\00:21:25.90 What's happened here? 00:21:25.93\00:21:28.08 And he'll have a great testimony 00:21:28.11\00:21:31.13 as he has here. 00:21:31.16\00:21:32.93 Now, Doc, we don't have a whole lot of time, 00:21:32.96\00:21:36.10 any closing remarks that you could give to the viewers 00:21:36.13\00:21:40.12 that might help them. 00:21:40.15\00:21:42.07 Well, you know, coming back to the spiritual again, 00:21:42.10\00:21:44.61 we try to get the people to memorize verses, 00:21:44.64\00:21:48.86 if they're Christian, of course, 00:21:48.89\00:21:50.56 to memorize Bible promises. 00:21:50.59\00:21:53.40 And when the, when the Holy Spirit comes 00:21:53.43\00:21:55.23 and speaks to your heart 00:21:55.26\00:21:57.10 and says you are a child of God, 00:21:57.13\00:22:00.69 now you are child of God. 00:22:00.72\00:22:02.78 And start thinking in terms of heaven 00:22:02.81\00:22:05.68 and your future life and then that energises you 00:22:05.71\00:22:09.64 to try to help other people to come along. 00:22:09.67\00:22:13.39 Doctor, I want to thank you for joining us here as usual. 00:22:13.42\00:22:16.45 Well, it's always a pleasure. 00:22:16.48\00:22:18.18 It's a pleasure to have you. 00:22:18.21\00:22:19.51 Yeah, this type of a case is all of this. 00:22:19.54\00:22:21.54 Yes, it is. 00:22:21.57\00:22:23.29 And, friends, don't go away 'cause Dr. Bivens will be 00:22:23.32\00:22:26.29 right with us with an important message. 00:22:26.32\00:22:28.59 Hi, I'm Dr. Randy Bivens. 00:22:35.09\00:22:37.39 When The Beatles wrote the popular song, 00:22:37.42\00:22:39.42 "Here comes the sun," 00:22:39.45\00:22:40.83 they might have been celebrating the sun's return 00:22:40.86\00:22:43.55 to their rainy home in England. 00:22:43.58\00:22:45.49 It's warm, it's bright, 00:22:45.52\00:22:47.55 the sun is generally thought to be 00:22:47.58\00:22:49.05 a pretty happy component in our every day lives. 00:22:49.08\00:22:52.70 But why do we need it? 00:22:52.73\00:22:54.65 What makes it indispensable to our lives? 00:22:54.68\00:22:57.67 Two words, Vitamin D. 00:22:57.70\00:23:01.43 There is a cholesterol like compound in our blood 00:23:01.46\00:23:03.93 that transforms into Vitamin D when exposed to sunlight. 00:23:03.96\00:23:09.24 This Vitamin D is then converted to it's active form 00:23:09.27\00:23:12.09 by the liver and then by the kidneys. 00:23:12.12\00:23:15.31 Well, that makes a question, why do we need Vitamin D? 00:23:15.34\00:23:20.09 What happens if you don't have enough? 00:23:20.12\00:23:22.94 For years, we've understood Vitamin D's role 00:23:22.97\00:23:25.28 in regulating calcium levels 00:23:25.31\00:23:27.10 and how a deficiency can cause both 00:23:27.13\00:23:29.47 rickets and osteoporosis. 00:23:29.50\00:23:31.93 Today, we know that Vitamin D also has an important role 00:23:31.96\00:23:35.68 as a steroid hormone in gene modulation. 00:23:35.71\00:23:39.90 This means Vitamin D can help turn on health promoting genes, 00:23:39.93\00:23:44.05 while suppressing bad genes, especially, oncogenes, 00:23:44.08\00:23:48.77 a gene group that promotes cancer. 00:23:48.80\00:23:52.07 And let us not forget Vitamin D's very important role 00:23:52.10\00:23:55.48 as an antioxidant. 00:23:55.51\00:23:58.52 Sun exposure among men was studied 00:23:58.55\00:24:00.47 in a recent cancer research article. 00:24:00.50\00:24:02.67 Those receiving the most sun experienced a 50% reduction 00:24:02.70\00:24:07.35 in prostate cancer, relative to those 00:24:07.38\00:24:10.25 who received the least sun. 00:24:10.28\00:24:12.27 This is only one example as Vitamin D 00:24:12.30\00:24:14.98 has also been shown to reduce many other types of cancer. 00:24:15.01\00:24:20.24 This doesn't mean that you should spend 00:24:20.27\00:24:21.71 every minute of every day basking under the sun. 00:24:21.74\00:24:25.75 Most people need to spend only a short time in the sun 00:24:25.78\00:24:28.28 to maintain healthy Vitamin D levels. 00:24:28.31\00:24:31.14 Once a person makes enough Vitamin D, 00:24:31.17\00:24:33.51 any extra is turned into inactive substances. 00:24:33.54\00:24:37.69 And adequate storage of Vitamin D 00:24:37.72\00:24:39.45 during summer months usually provides 00:24:39.48\00:24:41.68 sufficient amounts for the winter months. 00:24:41.71\00:24:44.86 There are two wavelengths of ultraviolet radiation 00:24:44.89\00:24:47.80 that we should be aware of, UVA and UVB. 00:24:47.83\00:24:53.02 The production of Vitamin D requires UVB radiation, 00:24:53.05\00:24:58.50 which is blocked by most sunscreens. 00:24:58.53\00:25:01.55 It's the UVA rays that are not blocked 00:25:01.58\00:25:04.91 by most sunscreens, 00:25:04.94\00:25:06.38 yet are the most dangerous for most types of skin cancer. 00:25:06.41\00:25:10.94 What this means is that by using a sunscreen product, 00:25:10.97\00:25:14.39 you reduced your Vitamin D level. 00:25:14.42\00:25:17.35 You've also done great level to decrease your risk 00:25:17.38\00:25:19.97 for skin cancer. 00:25:20.00\00:25:22.62 Ultimately, sunshine is important for cancer reduction, 00:25:22.65\00:25:25.93 rickets prevention and reducing osteoporosis. 00:25:25.96\00:25:30.10 Moreover, sunshine can also keep you happy. 00:25:30.13\00:25:35.00 You might have heard of Seasonal Affective Disorder, 00:25:35.03\00:25:37.54 otherwise known as SAD or SAD, it's a type of depression 00:25:37.57\00:25:42.87 that occurs at the same time every year, 00:25:42.90\00:25:44.84 starting in the fall, 00:25:44.87\00:25:46.28 and then improving in the spring. 00:25:46.31\00:25:48.60 This type of depression is energy draining 00:25:48.63\00:25:51.09 and makes you feel moody, often for what frustratingly 00:25:51.12\00:25:54.69 feels like no reason at all. 00:25:54.72\00:25:57.50 If you're going through this now, 00:25:57.53\00:25:58.84 go and try to find a patch of sun. 00:25:58.87\00:26:01.98 SAD is caused by decreasing amounts of sunlight 00:26:02.01\00:26:04.95 and colder weather. 00:26:04.98\00:26:07.48 Providing bright light at the correct wavelength 00:26:07.51\00:26:10.65 is called phototherapy. 00:26:10.68\00:26:13.01 Researchers have found that this changes 00:26:13.04\00:26:15.91 the chemistry of the brain 00:26:15.94\00:26:17.24 while boosting Vitamin D levels. 00:26:17.27\00:26:19.78 In fact phototherapy in the form of light boxes 00:26:19.81\00:26:22.71 radically improves SAD. 00:26:22.74\00:26:26.06 Phototherapy is an option, but choosing to have your home 00:26:26.09\00:26:29.00 in an area where the sun often shines is ideal. 00:26:29.03\00:26:32.61 It's understandable that not everyone can live 00:26:32.64\00:26:35.36 next to a sunny beach. 00:26:35.39\00:26:37.49 But we encourage you to do your best 00:26:37.52\00:26:39.05 to make sun a priority, 00:26:39.08\00:26:41.12 incorporate just 20-30 minutes of natural warmth bringing 00:26:41.15\00:26:44.92 and mood lifting sunlight in your life 00:26:44.95\00:26:47.63 and see how it works to lead you down 00:26:47.66\00:26:49.79 a path of focus. 00:26:49.82\00:26:53.14 You're killing me. 00:26:53.17\00:26:54.48 You're killing me.
