00:03:08.70\00:03:11.38 Well, I really had thought 00:03:11.41\00:03:13.65 that I had a really bad case of the flu, 00:03:13.68\00:03:16.57 dehydration and other things and-- 00:03:16.60\00:03:19.81 What were the symptoms? 00:03:19.84\00:03:22.11 I was very dehydrated, you know, 00:03:22.14\00:03:25.06 couldn't keep anything down. 00:03:25.09\00:03:27.29 Just very sick feeling and ended up in ICU. 00:03:27.32\00:03:32.37 I first went to-- Really? 00:03:32.40\00:03:33.68 Yeah, first went to a quick care 00:03:33.71\00:03:36.93 and they just wanted to give me a pill 00:03:36.96\00:03:38.48 for the vomiting and I said "I'm too sick." 00:03:38.51\00:03:41.43 Yeah, You know and so they sent me to the Emergency Room 00:03:41.46\00:03:44.28 and then I ended up with 5 lines 00:03:44.31\00:03:46.54 going in and ended up in ICU and they diagnosed me 00:03:46.57\00:03:50.51 as a diabetic with the a DKA, 00:03:50.54\00:03:53.08 and had a UTI, and several things 00:03:53.11\00:03:57.38 so I was about two and half days in ICU 00:03:57.41\00:04:01.22 and went home with the insulin pin 00:04:01.25\00:04:03.88 and things like that. 00:04:03.91\00:04:06.17 So they put you on the insulin immediately? 00:04:06.20\00:04:07.88 Yes, immediately. 00:04:07.91\00:04:08.96 Did they put you on any oral medication? 00:04:08.99\00:04:12.23 No, that came later when I went to the endocrinologist. 00:04:12.26\00:04:15.86 And he suggested you take Metformin or? 00:04:15.89\00:04:18.47 Yeah, Metformin and there was another one of them, 00:04:18.50\00:04:21.23 but I just they both made me so ill. 00:04:21.26\00:04:25.40 That I couldn't take them 00:04:25.43\00:04:27.08 and then for the high cholesterol 00:04:27.11\00:04:29.19 they gave me a Statin drug and so, but-- 00:04:29.22\00:04:35.42 So how did the Statin make you feel? 00:04:35.45\00:04:37.75 It made to really fuzzy headed. 00:04:37.78\00:04:40.59 Really fuzzy and I did not like it at all. 00:04:40.62\00:04:45.93 Well, I stopped using-- I think I told you this 00:04:45.96\00:04:48.41 yesterday in a meeting. 00:04:48.44\00:04:50.46 I stopped using the Statin drug about 5 years ago. 00:04:50.49\00:04:54.22 Yes. 00:04:54.25\00:04:55.37 And anyway that's a different story, 00:04:55.40\00:04:57.88 I want to talk more about you. 00:04:57.91\00:04:59.74 Now, we talked before we went on air here. 00:04:59.77\00:05:02.44 Yes. 00:05:02.47\00:05:03.50 And you said, you'd lost some weight. 00:05:03.53\00:05:04.76 How much weight have you lost? Yeah. 00:06:31.50\00:06:33.69 So, okay are you diabetic today? 00:06:33.72\00:06:37.96 No. You're not? 00:06:37.99\00:06:39.02 That was the wonderful thing, I came down here 00:06:39.05\00:06:42.88 and it was the doctor that looked 00:06:42.91\00:06:45.00 at my all of my medical reports 00:06:45.03\00:06:47.14 and he said that something doesn't seem right 00:06:47.17\00:06:49.80 and so then he ran an additional test on me 00:06:49.83\00:06:52.82 and it was C-peptide test. 00:06:52.85\00:06:55.06 And it came out that I was not diabetic. 00:06:55.09\00:06:59.54 That my insulin was over producing 00:06:59.57\00:07:01.63 and my pancreas was over producing insulin. 00:07:01.66\00:07:04.35 But at the same time 00:07:04.38\00:07:05.41 I was giving myself insulin shots everyday, 00:07:05.44\00:07:07.98 so immediately went off the insulin, 00:07:08.01\00:07:09.78 so I am not on and because I quit this is Statin's too. 00:07:09.81\00:07:12.67 I'm not on. Good for you. 00:07:12.70\00:07:14.14 Anything and but my numbers are gradually coming down 00:07:14.17\00:07:17.81 and staying usually under 140. 00:07:17.84\00:07:21.30 Good. That's good. 00:07:21.33\00:07:22.40 We're very pleased with it, you know feeling good. 00:07:22.43\00:07:24.99 Yeah, now before you got here, 00:07:25.02\00:07:27.53 had you done any kind of exercise, like walking? 00:07:27.56\00:07:32.01 Well, the day I got out of the hospital, 00:07:32.04\00:07:34.99 I started walking. 00:07:35.02\00:07:36.59 Okay, you thought you better do that. 00:07:36.62\00:07:38.57 Well, it was such a big wake up call 00:07:38.60\00:07:41.58 and I never had been sick and never been in the hospital 00:07:41.61\00:07:44.76 except that you know have my children 00:07:44.79\00:07:47.30 and you don't end up ICU. 00:07:47.33\00:07:49.51 It was really like you know the merry-go-round 00:07:49.54\00:07:51.62 just stopped abruptly because, 00:07:51.65\00:07:54.22 basically you know what you are suppose to be doing. 00:07:54.25\00:07:56.82 You know eating and you know exercising. 00:07:56.85\00:07:59.50 Again doing it the right way but never really doing it. 00:07:59.53\00:08:04.51 And so it-- it very much caught my attention. 00:08:04.54\00:08:08.07 So now that you've been here 16, 17 days, 00:08:08.10\00:08:12.60 how much are walking are you doing today? 00:08:12.63\00:08:14.67 Well, I am as of the last two days up to 5 miles. 00:08:14.70\00:08:18.72 5 miles? 00:08:18.75\00:08:19.82 Yeah, I've probably be used to do 5 miles a month. 00:08:19.85\00:08:24.17 You and I both probably, when I got here. 00:08:24.20\00:08:26.57 Yeah. 5 miles a day? 00:08:26.60\00:08:28.57 5 miles a day but it isn't-- it isn't hard 00:08:28.60\00:08:31.32 because the wonderful thing is 00:08:31.35\00:08:32.77 you don't have to do 5 miles at once. 00:08:32.80\00:08:34.30 I'd have a hard time doing that right now 00:08:34.33\00:08:36.59 but you can do it in increments. 00:08:36.62\00:08:37.84 So I'm doing it mile increments right now and-- 00:08:37.87\00:08:41.24 That's good. Diabetes will do that? 00:10:21.62\00:10:24.22 Yeah. Yikes. 00:10:24.25\00:10:25.44 And circulation and then the 80 percent chance 00:10:25.47\00:10:29.61 that within two years his other leg would be amputated 00:10:29.64\00:10:33.50 and that got my attention, very big. 00:10:33.53\00:10:35.60 Ouch, ouch. 00:10:35.63\00:10:36.66 You don't have to go through your whole life this way. 00:10:36.69\00:10:38.86 No, you don't. Please tell us more. 00:13:11.41\00:13:15.79 Yeah, about well it was in January I believe 00:13:15.82\00:13:19.46 and she went into the hospital 00:13:19.49\00:13:21.52 because she was feeling just really terrible. 00:13:21.55\00:13:24.35 Yeah. 00:13:24.38\00:13:25.41 She thought she had a bad flu or something like that. 00:13:25.44\00:13:27.64 I take her into the hospital and they put her into ICU 00:13:27.67\00:13:31.70 and tell her that she has diabetic ketoacidosis. 00:13:31.73\00:13:36.04 Now, this is because our bodies 00:13:36.07\00:13:38.90 are so fearfully and wonderfully made 00:13:38.93\00:13:41.52 there are cells that keep tasting the sugar and the blood 00:13:41.55\00:13:46.57 to see how much is more is needed or less is need. 00:13:46.60\00:13:49.78 How much more insulin and so forth 00:13:49.81\00:13:51.84 to balance things up 00:13:51.87\00:13:53.54 but if the insulin isn't there or there some other stressor 00:13:53.57\00:13:56.67 that's interrupting those cells can't taste the sugar 00:13:56.70\00:14:00.84 and so they keep sending a message 00:14:00.87\00:14:03.09 up the sugar, put more sugar in the blood. 00:14:03.12\00:14:05.96 And after a while the whole system is in red alert. 00:14:05.99\00:14:09.87 It's breaking down the fat cells 00:14:09.90\00:14:12.44 and the fat is being turned into the sugar 00:14:12.47\00:14:15.21 and this makes that blood acidotic 00:14:15.24\00:14:18.04 and so we call that diabetic ketoacidosis. 00:14:18.07\00:14:23.38 So I-- I -- and its hats of the physicians, 00:14:23.41\00:14:27.02 that are able to treat us and they have to be right there 00:14:27.05\00:14:30.10 sometimes 24 hours a day 00:14:30.13\00:14:32.22 for couple of days just to save somebody. 00:14:32.25\00:14:35.94 It's just hanging between life and death. 00:14:35.97\00:14:38.17 So it's wonderful. 00:14:38.20\00:14:39.55 But was that her situation? 00:14:39.58\00:14:41.04 Was she actually hanging between life and death? 00:14:41.07\00:14:43.83 Well, here is the thing I said "well, how high was your sugar" 00:14:43.86\00:14:46.67 and she said "well, it was like 355-400." 00:14:46.70\00:14:50.25 I said "that doesn't sound right." 00:14:50.28\00:14:51.91 Something wrong. 00:14:51.94\00:14:52.98 I said "what else was going on?" 00:14:53.01\00:14:54.15 And she said "well, you know what they found out 00:14:54.18\00:14:57.70 was I having a urinary track infection." 00:14:57.73\00:15:01.45 And so I started thinking about this 00:15:01.48\00:15:03.04 and I said "well, you know what happened?
