I mean excess oils and fats, 00:12:08.87\00:12:13.00 every drop! - Every drop! 00:12:13.01\00:12:15.03 Just about. 00:12:15.04\00:12:16.09 That doesn't mean avocados. 00:12:16.72\00:12:19.60 No, avocados, oil, olives, 00:12:19.61\00:12:23.09 oil in the olives, and nuts is all good stuff! 00:12:24.57\00:12:29.57 But I cut out all the rest and I lost 00:12:29.78\00:12:32.84 7 more pounds! 00:12:33.18\00:12:34.75 You still look good. 00:12:35.51\00:12:36.57 Isn't that something? - Yeah. 00:12:36.72\00:12:37.87 Am I photogenic? 00:12:38.75\00:12:40.75 Oh, yeah! 00:12:40.84\00:12:42.03 Well I'm so blessed because along with that 00:12:43.60\00:12:46.03 my energy has been up, 00:12:46.48\00:12:48.00 I've been able to walk faster, 00:12:48.33\00:12:50.24 I'm on the treadmill, I'm on 00:12:51.51\00:12:53.06 the half mile loop, I feel better! 00:12:53.07\00:12:55.75 Well we knew you would. 00:12:56.24\00:12:57.54 And esselstyn would've said, man you're right on. 00:12:58.00\00:13:01.72 Yes, and my next blood draw you're going to be proud of me 00:13:02.03\00:13:05.57 I know my numbers are going to come way down. 00:13:05.84\00:13:08.03 Well I'm already proud of you. - Well thank you. 00:13:08.04\00:13:10.69 So, lets get on with the interview. 00:13:10.84\00:13:12.27 Yes. - I think they're 00:13:12.30\00:13:13.33 recording this right now! 00:13:13.34\00:13:14.45 Oh, well that's great, you just testified! 00:13:14.46\00:13:17.09 To all the people! 00:13:18.12\00:13:19.12 Let's talk about Lorna! 00:13:19.24\00:13:20.78 Yeah, this is really exciting because 00:13:21.75\00:13:25.15 in her situation she comes all the way from Jamaica. 00:13:25.42\00:13:29.06 Jamaica man? 00:13:29.54\00:13:30.54 Yeah. 00:13:30.55\00:13:31.54 I had a little stone that they painted for me 00:13:32.75\00:13:35.51 and there were three ladies from Jamaica and it says, 00:13:35.52\00:13:38.45 from the ladies in Jamaica, no problem man! 00:13:40.06\00:13:43.39 You would say, how could anyone be sick in Jamaica? 00:13:44.54\00:13:47.57 They have the sunshine and all of that good stuff. 00:13:47.58\00:13:50.54 The thing is that their lifestyle isn't always the best. 00:13:50.72\00:13:53.66 As the days and the years progress 00:13:54.00\00:13:56.78 they're doing less exercise, they're eating more 00:13:57.15\00:13:59.57 of the refined foods. She told me 00:14:00.03\00:14:02.81 about how it was when she was a little kid 00:14:02.82\00:14:05.15 it wasn't like this. But anyway, here she comes in 00:14:05.42\00:14:08.78 and she was overweight 00:14:09.15\00:14:11.15 she was over 200 pounds but not very much. 00:14:11.72\00:14:14.36 Now she's just under 200 pounds and she was 00:14:14.54\00:14:16.69 disappointed that she didn't lose a lot of weight. 00:14:16.70\00:14:19.21 But she admitted that her clothes are looser now. 00:14:19.42\00:14:21.72 And you told her that does happen sometimes. 00:14:21.75\00:14:25.45 That lady that lost the four dress sizes 00:14:25.69\00:14:28.03 she was here when it was a four week session 00:14:28.33\00:14:30.87 but we still have people that do that. 00:14:31.45\00:14:33.87 Last session we had a 73 year old that lost 00:14:34.18\00:14:37.60 3 inches around the girth. 00:14:38.00\00:14:39.57 And his nephew, we talked about them, 00:14:39.81\00:14:43.00 his nephew lost 4 inches around the girth. 00:14:43.30\00:14:45.75 And they were up to doing 10 miles a day 00:14:46.06\00:14:48.18 but everybody knows how wonderful exercise is. 00:14:48.45\00:14:50.75 But the thing we want to look at here 00:14:51.24\00:14:53.30 is that this lady didn't have the clues, 00:14:53.75\00:14:56.81 tools, or the knowledge 00:14:57.30\00:15:00.42 and as the bible says, where there is no vision 00:15:00.75\00:15:03.81 then there is failure. 00:15:04.63\00:15:05.75 Yes. - And so 00:15:06.06\00:15:07.36 she didn't have that but now she understands it. 00:15:07.63\00:15:10.72 She came in on a full replacement of insulin 00:15:11.15\00:15:14.30 and her fasting blood sugar 00:15:17.00\00:15:18.69 was 181. 00:15:19.24\00:15:20.60 Then she was on another medication 00:15:21.15\00:15:23.69 that most people are on which is the metformin 00:15:24.12\00:15:27.57 which keeps your liver from dumping out sugar 00:15:27.87\00:15:31.60 and slows down the absorption of sugar. 00:15:31.66\00:15:34.00 So, the numbers look better, 00:15:34.18\00:15:35.48 and there were two that I didn't even know what they were. 00:15:35.69\00:15:38.21 Because they were brand names 00:15:38.63\00:15:40.45 from Jamaica so we found out that 00:15:40.46\00:15:42.42 that one of them was a Sulfonylurea 00:15:42.72\00:15:45.48 which keeps whipping the pancreas until finally the 00:15:45.66\00:15:48.21 pancrease gives out. 00:15:48.48\00:15:49.51 "That's enough stop!" 00:15:49.52\00:15:51.27 The the last one was actos which is one of the newer ones 00:15:51.28\00:15:55.33 and so we got her off 3 of those and left her on the actos 00:15:55.78\00:16:01.66 the diabetologists say now that that's the one that 00:16:02.09\00:16:05.06 is probably the safest. She was on 4 medications 00:16:05.33\00:16:08.81 for her blood pressure. 00:16:09.24\00:16:10.30 One of them was one of the new ones like 00:16:10.75\00:16:13.78 the one that helps the kidney 00:16:14.54\00:16:17.00 it doesn't help the kidney but - It protects the kidney. 00:16:17.15\00:16:20.06 it protects the kidney and it does somewhat 00:16:20.18\00:16:22.87 but it tells the kidney, 00:16:23.30\00:16:24.72 you need more blood pressure? Shut up. 00:16:24.73\00:16:27.00 You see? 00:16:27.60\00:16:28.60 It keeps the kidney from 00:16:29.09\00:16:30.63 sending that strong message up there. 00:16:30.64\00:16:33.03 We're suffering down here. 00:16:33.18\00:16:34.33 But it was also doubled up with a diuretic 00:16:34.48\00:16:39.27 so when I get her blood work back I see that her 00:16:39.57\00:16:43.18 potassium is pretty low. 00:16:43.39\00:16:45.60 In fact it could've been dangerously low. 00:16:45.61\00:16:47.69 So when I found out what it was 00:16:48.06\00:16:50.36 we took her off of that one and 00:16:50.48\00:16:52.18 her potassium is normal on the second draw. 00:16:52.45\00:16:55.15 We also took her off the beta blocker 00:16:56.81\00:17:01.39 we got it from 00:17:01.84\00:17:03.39 100, it was Atenolol which keeps the 00:17:04.66\00:17:08.00 heart from beating stronger and faster. 00:17:08.01\00:17:10.09 Sometimes the people feel a little lethargic 00:17:11.42\00:17:13.54 because their pulse goes down below 60 sometimes 00:17:13.55\00:17:16.42 into the 50's and they feel kind of draggy on that. 00:17:16.69\00:17:19.21 So I said, let's try it, 00:17:19.42\00:17:20.69 so I took her off of that one 00:17:21.00\00:17:22.54 but her blood pressure went back up to 00:17:22.75\00:17:25.06 what it was when she came in and we had gotten it down lower. 00:17:25.33\00:17:28.12 Yeah, but this was without all those medications! 00:17:29.48\00:17:31.84 Yeah! 00:17:31.85\00:17:33.06 But then her pulse was 00:17:33.18\00:17:35.24 running a bit higher so we put her back on that 00:17:35.39\00:17:38.57 and when she loses the weight 00:17:39.03\00:17:41.63 she will continue to have the diabetes under control, 00:17:42.18\00:17:45.81 the blood pressure under control, 00:17:46.21\00:17:47.87 and she's just turned her life around. 00:17:48.27\00:17:49.78 She asked, what am I going to tell my doctors when they 00:17:50.27\00:17:53.18 see all this stuff? They're trying to protect my eyes. 00:17:53.51\00:17:56.15 I said, Lorna look, 00:17:56.63\00:17:58.06 they may want your A1C's down in the seller 00:17:59.15\00:18:02.54 but when you do that with all the insulin 00:18:02.87\00:18:05.15 you're not going to be able to lose weight. 00:18:05.30\00:18:07.09 So now you've got a dilemma here. 00:18:07.42\00:18:09.30 You've got your A1C at a good area, 00:18:09.75\00:18:12.87 you've still got all your weight, 00:18:13.27\00:18:14.54 you're still a diabetic 00:18:14.55\00:18:15.84 and so now you haven't corrected the original problem 00:18:16.30\00:18:18.84 and your eyes are still going to 00:18:19.21\00:18:20.57 suffer from your diabetic retinopothy 00:18:20.58\00:18:23.24 because you couldn't get your weight off 00:18:23.48\00:18:26.69 you couldn't get out from under the diabetes symptoms. 00:18:26.84\00:18:29.48 And she said, that's right. 00:18:29.69\00:18:31.39 She wants to do this and we got 00:18:32.18\00:18:34.09 to follow up and keep her doing it. 00:18:34.10\00:18:35.75 So with her being able to get off of 00:18:36.06\00:18:38.66 these medicines especially the insulin 00:18:38.67\00:18:41.45 and get good blood sugars 00:18:42.00\00:18:43.51 and walk away from the diabetes, literally, 00:18:44.36\00:18:47.45 walk away from diabetes then when she goes in to see 00:18:47.72\00:18:51.48 her doctor even if it isn't as low 00:18:51.69\00:18:55.18 she doesn't have diabetes anymore 00:18:55.30\00:18:57.03 and her eyes will have a 00:18:57.27\00:18:58.69 chance to do as well as they can. 00:18:58.70\00:19:00.63 That's what people don't understand. 00:19:00.81\00:19:02.45 Now you've taken her off of 3 diabetes medications? 00:19:02.72\00:19:06.75 3 diabetes medications and 3 blood pressure medications. 00:19:06.76\00:19:11.00 Do we often times have the doctors 00:19:11.01\00:19:14.24 of these guests call you and 00:19:14.42\00:19:16.81 ask you questions? 00:19:16.84\00:19:18.15 I've got one that I've got to call back now in fact we 00:19:18.16\00:19:21.30 interviewed her, she's back in New 00:19:21.84\00:19:24.78 York and she was dying when she came. 00:19:24.79\00:19:28.06 She had the cancer remember 00:19:28.27\00:19:30.15 after 20 years it came back again. 00:19:30.16\00:19:32.42 Yes, I do remember. 00:19:32.43\00:19:33.66 She was so sick she couldn't stand up, 00:19:33.69\00:19:36.51 she was throwing up, I didn't know what was going on, 00:19:36.52\00:19:39.24 and it was a family practitioner. 00:19:39.25\00:19:40.60 We know that if you give them a 00:19:41.00\00:19:42.33 theraputic holiday maybe they will get better 00:19:42.34\00:19:44.54 and after several days she was up and about 00:19:44.87\00:19:48.12 to do all these things and so he wants to know 00:19:48.39\00:19:50.81 why she has gotten off of all these medicines 00:19:51.12\00:19:54.06 but she's so much better she wont go back on them. 00:19:54.30\00:19:56.36 Yes, praise God! 00:19:56.42\00:19:58.00 Do you feel confident that Lorna has 00:19:58.33\00:20:01.72 the where with all to continue on 00:20:02.06\00:20:04.27 this journey? 00:20:34.55\00:20:36.42 Yeah, and we put her back on the one to slow her heart down. 00:20:36.43\00:20:39.78 So when she loses the weight she'll be off of that one too. 00:20:39.79\00:20:43.72 Praise God! - It's wonderful! 00:20:43.81\00:20:45.36 It is wonderful! - Everybody should do it! 00:20:45.57\00:20:46.81 Yes! 00:20:47.15\00:20:48.15 Well Dr. Lukens I want to 00:20:48.51\00:20:50.21 thank you for coming on the program 00:20:50.22\00:20:52.21 and enlightening us with your wisdom and kindness. 00:20:52.51\00:20:55.72 Well the main thing is the Great Physician 00:20:56.36\00:20:58.78 is the one that wants us to do these things. 00:20:59.81\00:21:01.84 That's right and we look to Him for all things! 00:21:01.85\00:21:04.33 And thank you friends but don't go away, 00:21:04.87\00:21:08.03 we have a tip for you right after this! 00:21:08.04\00:21:10.39 Hello, I'm Dr. David DeRose. 00:21:11.60\00:21:13.72 You know helping a friend, 00:21:14.18\00:21:15.54 neighbor, or relative have better 00:21:15.55\00:21:17.27 health is one of the most practical 00:21:17.28\00:21:19.09 forms of health ministry available. 00:21:19.10\00:21:21.18 However if you're not a health professional 00:21:21.57\00:21:23.30 it can be extremely difficult to know 00:21:23.31\00:21:25.33 how to help someone access reliable, 00:21:25.34\00:21:27.69 credible, up to date health information. 00:21:27.81\00:21:30.18 That's why I recommend the NEWSTART Lifestyle Club. 00:21:30.75\00:21:34.03 The Club is based on the world famous NEWSTART principles that 00:21:34.15\00:21:37.45 have helped millions be well 00:21:37.46\00:21:39.03 naturally without the use of drugs. 00:21:39.04\00:21:40.81 The Club offers streaming video, 00:21:41.21\00:21:43.06 expert health advice, wellness tips, tools, and more! 00:21:43.07\00:21:46.33 And when it comes to ministry the NEWSTART 00:21:46.75\00:21:49.09 Lifestyle Club provides a way for sponsor 00:21:49.10\00:21:51.06 churches and health organizations to connect 00:21:51.07\00:21:53.57 with club members in their own communities. 00:21:53.58\00:21:56.18 If you'd like to learn more about how the NEWSTART 00:21:56.84\00:21:59.03 Lifestyle Club can make a 00:21:59.04\00:22:00.39 difference in your health outreach, call 00:22:00.40\00:22:02.51 and ask for your free copy of health evangelism made simple. 00:22:06.45\00:22:11.75 Hello and welcome to NEWSTART At Home. 00:22:28.06\00:22:29.45 I'm your host, Don Mackintosh we're glad you're with us. 00:22:29.46\00:22:31.69 And we're also glad that we have Dr. 00:22:32.45\00:22:34.48 Doug Plata with us today. Welcome doctor! 00:22:34.49\00:22:36.72 I appreciate it! 00:22:36.73\00:22:38.09 You are a specialist in family 00:22:38.10\00:22:40.00 practice but also preventive medicine? 00:22:40.01\00:22:41.69 That's right. 00:22:41.70\00:22:42.69 And as we were talking you said one of the most important 00:22:42.72\00:22:45.21 things for people to do is have a consistant exercise program. 00:22:45.22\00:22:49.00 Why is that, how can we get it started, 00:22:49.33\00:22:51.15 how can we make it stick? 00:22:51.16\00:22:52.27 Well, there's so many benefits to exercise, 00:22:52.39\00:22:55.27 it's one of the most 00:22:55.28\00:22:56.27 powerful medicines that we have. 00:22:56.60\00:22:58.57 And it's important for heart health and 00:22:58.58\00:23:01.21 so many different things, even depression. 00:23:01.22\00:23:03.15 So, and the other questions were? 00:23:03.84\00:23:05.78 How do we get it started and how do we make it stick? 00:23:05.79\00:23:07.72 I think with most people 00:23:08.03\00:23:10.00 it's common sense we all need to exercise on a regular basis. 00:23:10.24\00:23:14.06 Especially your aerobic exercise, walking, 00:23:14.07\00:23:16.42 running, cycling, these sorts of things. 00:23:16.43\00:23:18.39 Well how to get started, 00:23:20.81\00:23:22.54 what I would recommend is for people to try 00:23:23.84\00:23:26.12 to find something they're going to stick with. 00:23:26.13\00:23:29.18 And for me that is something I find enjoyable. 00:23:29.19\00:23:31.66 There's nothing like, 00:23:32.12\00:23:33.12 oh I have to get up and I have to 00:23:33.13\00:23:34.78 walk or jog or something like this. 00:23:35.00\00:23:36.60 And if you don't like doing that it's going to be difficult 00:23:36.61\00:23:38.87 to really keep doing that 00:23:38.88\00:23:40.75 month after month, year after year, 00:23:40.84\00:23:42.69 like we need to do. So, 00:23:42.70\00:23:44.51 what I recommend is make it enjoyable 00:23:44.72\00:23:48.36 so it's something you look forward to. 00:23:48.37\00:23:50.39 What do you personally look forward to in terms of exercise? 00:23:51.24\00:23:54.09 Well I found it and for me it's cycling. 00:23:54.12\00:23:58.03 Now, being in preventive medecine I actually 00:23:58.04\00:24:00.45 looked in the literature and asked, how safe is this? 00:24:00.46\00:24:02.42 And unfortunately cycling is not one of the safest 00:24:03.00\00:24:05.24 things but for me it's one of the most enjoyable. 00:24:05.25\00:24:07.57 So I did buy a bicycle 00:24:08.12\00:24:10.60 and I got a route on the street that is safe 00:24:10.84\00:24:15.30 very little traffic. 00:24:15.39\00:24:16.69 When I cycle I'm very cautious about it because 00:24:17.06\00:24:19.66 I'm out there to get exercise and for my health 00:24:19.67\00:24:22.66 and obviously an injury is not at all healthful. 00:24:22.69\00:24:25.21 Right, so walking? 00:24:25.24\00:24:26.84 Walking is one of the best if it's something you enjoy doing. 00:24:27.48\00:24:31.81 Walking is relatively safe. 00:24:32.03\00:24:34.75 It's not pounding, it's not damaging to the knees. 00:24:34.76\00:24:38.21 And it's something anybody can do. 00:24:38.51\00:24:40.84 What do you need to walk? You need a pair of shoes. 00:24:40.85\00:24:43.78 And a safe place. 00:24:44.33\00:24:45.33 My problem, just a little confession here, 00:24:47.45\00:24:49.57 is when I was growing up 00:24:49.58\00:24:51.00 most of my exercise was 00:24:51.72\00:24:53.15 related to sports or activities where 00:24:53.16\00:24:55.81 there were other people involved. 00:24:56.09\00:24:57.27 Right. 00:24:57.28\00:24:58.27 And then we you get to a certain 00:24:58.28\00:25:00.21 stage in life sometimes you don't have, 00:25:00.22\00:25:02.39 I'm not saying I don't have friends, 00:25:03.36\00:25:05.00 but you don't have that same setup. 00:25:05.15\00:25:07.48 Right. 00:25:07.49\00:25:08.48 So what would you say to people like me? 00:25:08.60\00:25:11.69 Like you, sure. 00:25:12.03\00:25:13.03 I think the social dimension to exercise 00:25:14.45\00:25:17.09 can be very important as a motivating factor. 00:25:17.10\00:25:20.30 If you know that somebody is 00:25:20.51\00:25:22.15 expecting to meet you at 8 in the morning 00:25:22.16\00:25:24.36 are you going to get out of bed and go? Yes you will. 00:25:24.54\00:25:27.18 Whereas if you don't have an exercise partner. 00:25:27.33\00:25:29.45 So with a good friend you can have 00:25:29.54\00:25:32.09 a lot of fun talking with them and 00:25:32.10\00:25:33.78 I think that's a very important thing. 00:25:34.06\00:25:36.00 Studies actually show if you have an exercise partner 00:25:36.12\00:25:38.15 you're more likely to be consistant with that exercise. 00:25:38.16\00:25:41.06 What about a dog? 00:25:41.07\00:25:42.06 I was going to mention a dog. 00:25:42.07\00:25:43.33 A dog is great, I think it's also a wonderful thing 00:25:45.06\00:25:49.24 and dogs need to be walked so you feel an 00:25:49.57\00:25:52.72 obligation to make sure you walk the dog. 00:25:52.73\00:25:55.15 That's right. 00:25:55.16\00:25:56.15 Just be careful. I used to jog with a dog and it would 00:25:56.16\00:25:59.60 like to run into me and of course that was very dangerous. 00:25:59.61\00:26:02.21 Yeah, I remember working in the ER once and this lady had a huge 00:26:02.33\00:26:06.24 great dane 00:26:06.48\00:26:09.78 and I would say make sure you have a short leash. 00:26:10.00\00:26:13.48 This dog had a big long leash and the 00:26:13.49\00:26:15.63 lady didn't see the dog start to run 00:26:15.64\00:26:18.06 and when she turned around it had 00:26:18.42\00:26:19.72 already built up steam and 00:26:19.73\00:26:21.81 she actually fell over and it drug her down the road. 00:26:22.21\00:26:24.15 Who's walking who? 00:26:25.00\00:26:26.00 Exactly, and it's not funny at all she was really injured. 00:26:26.01\00:26:29.48 So just be careful with dogs. 00:26:29.60\00:26:31.63 So, start it and then stick with it 00:26:31.78\00:26:34.03 with the social things and maybe a pet. 00:26:34.04\00:26:37.15 Anything else? 00:26:37.16\00:26:38.15 Yeah, let me mention something about safety. 00:26:38.16\00:26:40.30 And that is that some people live in a 00:26:41.24\00:26:44.12 neighborhood where maybe they don't feel safe 00:26:44.13\00:26:46.24 walking around the neighborhood. 00:26:47.69\00:26:49.00 And in that sort of situation if you're 00:26:49.54\00:26:51.84 walking with a partner you'll feel safer. 00:26:51.85\00:26:54.24 But often times at malls there's 00:26:54.57\00:26:58.33 walking groups that you can find out about. 00:26:58.36\00:27:02.48 And if it's raining or something like that again, 00:27:02.81\00:27:07.06 malls are a good place to go. 00:27:07.07\00:27:08.36 Pools, swimming? 00:27:08.37\00:27:09.39 Swimming pools, another good form of exercise, 00:27:09.48\00:27:12.06 not so good in building up strong 00:27:12.07\00:27:13.75 bones but aerobically very good. 00:27:13.76\00:27:15.84 We've been talking to Dr. Doug Plata about exercise. 00:27:16.57\00:27:19.81 You need to start and stick with it. 00:27:19.87\00:27:22.33 And we have some very 00:27:22.34\00:27:23.42 practical ideas on how to do that now. 00:27:23.43\00:27:24.75 Thank you for joining us at NEWSTART 00:27:25.39\00:27:26.81 At Home but get out of your home and 00:27:26.82\00:27:28.54 exercise today! 00:27:28.55\00:27:29.75 And thank you doctor for being with us. 00:27:30.21\00:27:32.15 You can find more information 00:27:32.16\00:27:33.27 about this and other subjects at: 00:27:33.28\00:27:34.69 Tell your friends about it and we're glad you joined us today. 00:27:38.87\00:27:41.24 Well friends that's it for today! 00:27:48.03\00:27:49.72 My prayer is that before it's too late 00:27:50.06\00:27:52.48 you pick up that phone and give me a call at: 00:27:52.75\00:27:54.81 and ask for Ron! 00:28:03.63\00:28:05.18
