Hi friends and welcome to another edition of Newstart Now 00:00:24.03\00:00:27.75 I have in our studio today De Martucci 00:00:28.18\00:00:32.03 who actually came along with her husband. 00:00:32.15\00:00:34.87 He was quite ill when he got here, 00:00:35.21\00:00:37.42 but she found out some amazing things as well. 00:00:37.54\00:00:40.42 Let's take a look at when she first arrived. 00:00:40.51\00:00:43.18 I had some problems with my back 00:00:44.18\00:00:46.72 disk problems, and then I decided that 00:00:47.06\00:00:50.21 I didn't need to worry about it, it was ok 00:00:50.33\00:00:52.39 and then I got to the point that I could not walk 00:00:52.48\00:00:55.69 I was having diificulty walking, having difficulty 00:00:55.78\00:00:57.84 getting in and out of my car, I drive around for my position, 00:00:58.09\00:01:02.33 and it turned out that the problem with my hip was 00:01:03.21\00:01:06.66 actually caused by my back. 00:01:06.72\00:01:08.60 My condition has caused me not to be able to do 00:01:09.03\00:01:11.69 the things that I really enjoy 00:01:11.75\00:01:13.24 I enjoy being active 00:01:13.66\00:01:15.63 We live by a river, I like to walk out there on the path 00:01:16.39\00:01:18.84 by the river and that has sort of been curtailed 00:01:19.18\00:01:22.30 because of the pain, and the more I would walk the 00:01:22.48\00:01:24.72 worse it would get. Then I would come home and sit in the 00:01:24.75\00:01:27.54 lounge chair, and that didn't help. 00:01:27.57\00:01:29.72 The reason it didn't help was because of the pressure 00:01:30.36\00:01:34.78 that was occuring. 00:01:34.87\00:01:36.69 I would like to finish this program 00:01:37.21\00:01:40.12 with more healing of those disks and joints in my body. 00:01:40.42\00:01:48.60 Welcome back, friends, and here's De in our studio, 00:01:51.84\00:01:54.87 De, you look totally different 00:01:55.36\00:01:59.27 from the day I first laid eyes on you! 00:01:59.57\00:02:02.78 Of course, you're dressed up in a lovely outfit. 00:02:03.33\00:02:06.57 But you're radiant! Fantastic program! 00:08:06.39\00:08:09.78 -And you learn all that in 18 days? 00:08:10.06\00:08:11.87 Yes -Isn't that amazing. 00:08:12.21\00:08:14.00 We know that the viewers, many of whom are anxious, 00:08:14.06\00:08:17.12 maybe that's not the right word, many are excited 00:08:18.21\00:08:21.78 because some of them will be here this coming Sunday. 00:08:22.03\00:08:24.63 Some people watching right now are going to be here 00:08:25.09\00:08:29.36 and they can hardly wait. And I know there are other viewers 00:08:29.42\00:08:32.78 that need to hear about these testimonies 00:08:32.79\00:08:35.72 that we do each week. We especially need to hear 00:08:35.75\00:08:39.48 about testimonies like yours, De, 00:08:39.49\00:08:42.36 you came here, you knew you had high blood pressure, 00:08:42.42\00:08:45.00 a little overweight, you had a problem here and there, 00:08:45.03\00:08:48.18 and you found out part of the problem was being deficient. 00:08:49.09\00:08:54.00 What about your back, you mentioned that. 00:08:54.03\00:08:57.27 Well, I knew I had a bulging disk, and that what 00:08:57.72\00:09:02.42 was happening was that when I leaned over my back 00:09:02.72\00:09:05.18 would tighten up, and then it came around the hip, 00:09:05.33\00:09:09.03 then it got to where I couldn't lift my leg to get into the car. 00:09:09.09\00:09:12.51 and that's a major problem because I drive around 00:09:12.78\00:09:16.30 all the time. I'm still working 00:09:16.33\00:09:20.72 I have a consulting firm and I check on elderly people 00:09:20.87\00:09:26.87 and help keep them in their homes, that's what I do 00:09:27.03\00:09:31.60 during the week. -So how is your back? 00:09:31.87\00:09:34.84 It's much better, I'm walking at least two and a half miles 00:09:35.36\00:09:39.48 a day. When you got here you couldn't 00:09:39.51\00:09:41.27 walk at all. -Well I could walk but it 00:09:41.30\00:09:43.30 bothered me a lot and I was taking some medication, 00:09:43.31\00:09:47.33 over the counter medication for the pain. 00:09:47.39\00:09:50.84 Are you still taking that? -No, I'm off that also. 00:09:51.39\00:09:55.06 You know De, I just see that God's hand is upon you 00:09:56.57\00:10:00.30 He's here all over this campus -That's right 00:10:00.42\00:10:03.84 And I want to thank you for taking the time to be with us 00:10:04.12\00:10:09.06 on this program. -All in God's hands. 00:10:09.57\00:10:11.75 Amen -Thank you 00:10:11.87\00:10:13.36 Friends thank you for joining us, but don't go away 00:10:14.18\00:10:16.63 because Dr. DeRose is going to be with us 00:10:17.03\00:10:20.06 in just a moment. 00:10:20.12\00:10:21.51 Well, you've done very well. 00:10:21.84\00:10:24.60 Do you have diabetes, heart disease, 00:10:30.18\00:10:32.78 high blood pressure, or do you weigh to much? 00:10:32.79\00:10:36.12 Hi, my name is Dr. Ing and I'd like to tell 00:10:36.54\00:10:39.45 you about our 18 day NEWSTART Lifestyle Program 00:10:39.46\00:10:42.54 It includes a comprehensive medical evaluation 00:10:42.81\00:10:45.78 with laboratory studies and an exercise stress test 00:10:45.79\00:10:49.09 Physician consultations, culinary school, 00:10:49.27\00:10:53.42 and opportunities to walk on beautiful trails 00:10:53.69\00:10:56.72 in the foothills of the Sierras 00:10:56.75\00:10:58.72 Your health is one of the most 00:11:00.54\00:11:02.18 important things that you have, don't wait 00:11:02.19\00:11:04.30 Give us a call at 00:11:04.48\00:11:09.09 Or visit our website 00:11:09.10\00:11:14.36 Welcome back friends and as 00:11:27.48\00:11:29.75 I promised, Dr. David DeRose 00:11:29.76\00:11:32.09 How are you, Doctor? 00:11:32.15\00:11:33.21 -I'm well. -It's so good to see you 00:11:33.22\00:11:34.84 Good to be with you, Ron 00:11:34.85\00:11:36.21 I'm so happy to be talking about 00:11:36.33\00:11:39.36 someone who's come to the NEWSTART program 00:11:39.37\00:11:42.75 to support her husband 00:11:43.03\00:11:45.24 only to find out that she's in serious trouble. 00:11:45.39\00:11:49.09 It was a remarkable experience. 00:11:49.15\00:11:50.78 Can I call that serious trouble? Was it serious? 00:11:50.79\00:11:53.36 Well, I think that's a fair 00:11:53.37\00:11:55.12 assessment and I think De would readily assent 00:11:55.13\00:11:58.00 even though it didn't look to her 00:11:58.06\00:12:00.48 like it was serious trouble 00:12:00.49\00:12:02.81 she didn't think, like you pointed out, 00:12:02.84\00:12:05.12 that she had a need to come here 00:12:05.13\00:12:06.81 Really, she was 00:12:07.00\00:12:08.18 aware that by the time- 00:12:08.19\00:12:09.78 Things were about a week into the program 00:12:10.27\00:12:12.66 It was really making a positive difference in her life 00:12:12.67\00:12:15.54 Wow. And how did you discover 00:12:15.57\00:12:18.75 that she was deficient in B12? 00:12:18.76\00:12:22.00 Well, we'd like to think that we're 00:12:22.12\00:12:24.57 all these great diagnosticians here 00:12:24.58\00:12:27.06 and we never miss anything 00:12:27.07\00:12:28.81 but any of my colleagues anywhere in medicine will say 00:12:28.82\00:12:32.60 sometimes we pick things up quickly, 00:12:32.63\00:12:34.60 other times we don't 00:12:34.61\00:12:35.66 The difference here at 00:12:35.69\00:12:36.75 Weimar is we're praying 00:12:36.76\00:12:37.78 We're asking the Lord to guide us 00:12:37.81\00:12:39.84 I'm not saying there aren't other praying physicians 00:12:39.87\00:12:42.06 but really we have to give God the glory because 00:12:42.18\00:12:45.12 we're human beings, we can miss things 00:12:45.33\00:12:48.33 and not think of certain things but in De's case 00:12:48.34\00:12:52.33 the Lord directed us to check the vitamin B12 status 00:12:52.39\00:12:58.00 it could be part of the problem 00:12:58.06\00:12:59.48 and sure enough she was very low 00:12:59.49\00:13:00.75 on vitamin B12 00:13:00.76\00:13:02.57 So what did you do after finding that out? 00:13:02.72\00:13:05.66 Did you prescribe a 00:13:05.67\00:13:07.36 medication or just a sublingual B12? 00:13:07.37\00:13:10.33 What we'll do if someone is seriously low on B12 00:13:10.36\00:13:13.45 is we really want to tank them up, if you will, 00:13:14.00\00:13:15.00 we want to replace that deficit 00:13:15.45\00:13:18.21 and so we'll give them a series of injections of B12 00:13:18.27\00:13:21.75 A lot of lay people they say, why give an injection? 00:13:21.87\00:13:24.51 The injection is only 1,000 micrograms 00:13:24.54\00:13:26.72 That's one milligram and 00:13:26.73\00:13:28.06 that's the same amount in a tablet 00:13:28.07\00:13:29.69 so why not just take it by mouth? 00:13:29.78\00:13:32.24 The problem is, Ron, 00:13:32.57\00:13:34.03 you can only absorb a few micrograms a day 00:13:34.15\00:13:36.84 when it's taken orally 00:13:37.06\00:13:38.36 We give you that shot and you've got 00:13:38.48\00:13:40.45 a thousand micrograms in your system 00:13:40.46\00:13:42.36 You couldn't likely get 00:13:42.37\00:13:43.57 that much into your body 00:13:43.58\00:13:44.78 over the course of half a year 00:13:44.84\00:13:47.09 if you're taking it orally 00:13:47.10\00:13:48.54 So it's really important because vitamin B12 00:13:48.55\00:13:52.06 can cause irreversible, neurologic problems 00:13:52.07\00:13:55.33 It seems that De dodged that bullet 00:13:55.34\00:13:58.03 but many people out there can have dementia 00:13:58.12\00:14:01.54 they can have memory problems, 00:14:01.57\00:14:03.48 they can have serious anemias 00:14:03.49\00:14:05.06 blood count problems, they can have 00:14:05.12\00:14:07.06 problems with their nervous system 00:14:07.07\00:14:08.84 where they lose their coordination, 00:14:08.85\00:14:11.18 they lose their sense of where their body parts are in space 00:14:11.19\00:14:15.00 we call it propriaception, so it can be very difficult 00:14:15.01\00:14:17.75 for them to walk on even surfaces or terrain 00:14:17.76\00:14:21.57 so really, De's situation is very 00:14:21.63\00:14:24.15 fortunate that she came when she did 00:14:24.16\00:14:26.72 and the Lord helped us to 00:14:26.75\00:14:28.36 have an index of suspicion 00:14:28.37\00:14:29.84 that B12 might be part of her problem 00:14:29.85\00:14:32.06 and indeed it turned out to be just that 00:14:32.07\00:14:34.30 Well, aside from that, 00:14:35.30\00:14:37.00 which is to me, a miracle in itself, 00:14:37.01\00:14:39.57 she's learning a new lifestyle, 00:14:40.54\00:14:42.12 she's lost some weight 00:14:42.13\00:14:43.18 she's off some medications 00:14:43.19\00:14:44.81 Tell me about that, 00:14:45.09\00:14:46.30 what happened there? 00:14:46.31\00:14:47.51 Well it's amazing really, when you think about it. 00:14:47.54\00:14:50.33 People are on medications 00:14:50.34\00:14:51.63 for their lipids, their blood fats, 00:14:51.64\00:14:53.72 their high blood pressure, their diabetes 00:14:53.73\00:14:56.12 and consistently what happened in 00:14:56.13\00:14:57.78 De's life is what we see here at NEWSTART 00:14:57.79\00:14:59.87 Now, not everyone responds at the same rate, 00:15:00.09\00:15:02.66 not everyone is as responsive in a couple of weeks 00:15:02.67\00:15:05.57 But many of our patients get off of multiple medications, 00:15:05.60\00:15:08.81 especially for these chronic 00:15:08.82\00:15:10.48 diseases that are related to our lifestyle 00:15:10.49\00:15:12.78 So start exercising, start 00:15:13.39\00:15:15.36 losing weight, eat a better diet 00:15:15.37\00:15:17.66 and the beauty of it is, Ron, you know this 00:15:17.75\00:15:20.48 When I'm working with someone who's an outpatient, 00:15:20.72\00:15:23.75 we're trying to educate them to make better food choices 00:15:23.76\00:15:27.12 trying to teach them how to prepare foods, 00:15:27.21\00:15:29.15 maybe they come to a cooking class 00:15:29.16\00:15:30.57 maybe they work with a dietician 00:15:30.58\00:15:32.09 Here at NEWSTART, from day one, you're eating an 00:15:32.10\00:15:35.09 optimum diet for your chronic medical conditions 00:15:35.10\00:15:38.03 So we have the ability here, at a very short order, 00:15:38.12\00:15:41.36 to get many of the people that 00:15:41.37\00:15:43.30 come off of many of those medications 00:15:43.31\00:15:45.60 Well, I wanted to ask 00:15:45.87\00:15:49.39 How soon did you take her off, or do you just take 00:15:49.72\00:15:52.60 someone off medication or do you recommend? What do you do? 00:15:52.61\00:15:55.87 Well, typically what I'm doing, like with blood pressure, 00:15:55.88\00:15:59.12 we're monitoring the blood pressure very carefully 00:15:59.13\00:16:01.78 If when I see the person and size up their history, 00:16:02.27\00:16:05.78 their physical exam, listen to their lifestyle 00:16:05.79\00:16:09.00 If I know there's going to be a really dramatic change 00:16:09.21\00:16:11.87 and their blood pressure's 00:16:11.88\00:16:13.30 already running on the lower side 00:16:13.31\00:16:14.87 we may back off on medicines the first time I see them 00:16:14.88\00:16:17.69 In De's case, her blood pressure 00:16:17.84\00:16:19.84 was a bit higher when she showed up 00:16:19.85\00:16:22.12 I didn't know how big the changes would be 00:16:22.72\00:16:24.81 because they had made some changes already 00:16:24.82\00:16:26.87 So we were just having her monitor her blood 00:16:27.00\00:16:28.57 pressures carefully a couple times a day 00:16:28.58\00:16:30.81 We have automated blood 00:16:31.00\00:16:32.36 pressure cuffs in the NEWSTART Lodge 00:16:32.37\00:16:34.39 And then when I'd see her in the office, 00:16:34.40\00:16:36.24 we saw that blood pressure coming down within a short time 00:16:36.25\00:16:38.78 We started tapering off her 00:16:38.87\00:16:41.09 medicine and within a week or less, 00:16:41.10\00:16:43.72 she was totally off her blood pressure medicine 00:16:43.73\00:16:47.33 Now I know there's viewers out there going, 00:16:47.57\00:16:49.87 wow I can do that, I think I'll change my diet 00:16:49.88\00:16:52.39 and I'm going to suprise my doctor, 00:16:52.63\00:16:54.75 do you recommend that? 00:16:54.76\00:16:56.12 Well, we're not going to ever 00:16:56.33\00:16:57.78 discourage someone from changing their lifestyle 00:16:57.79\00:17:00.27 And if you do make dramatic changes in your lifestyle, 00:17:00.60\00:17:03.54 what you're going to find is with alot of these things, 00:17:03.55\00:17:06.54 you want to have medical input 00:17:06.55\00:17:08.18 Because the average person, Ron, 00:17:08.21\00:17:10.39 doesn't know how to taper medication 00:17:10.40\00:17:12.72 Some medications you can stop abruptly, 00:17:12.73\00:17:15.00 Others are very dangerous to 00:17:15.01\00:17:16.48 It's true with certain blood pressure medicines, 00:17:16.49\00:17:18.78 You can even have a heart 00:17:18.79\00:17:20.06 attack from stopping a blood pressure 00:17:20.07\00:17:21.75 medicine too quickly of a certain class 00:17:21.76\00:17:23.60 Others cause what we call, Rebound Hypertension 00:17:23.61\00:17:26.12 You stop a medicine abruptly and then 00:17:26.18\00:17:28.42 you get tremendously high blood pressure. 00:17:28.43\00:17:30.81 It can even cause a stroke or end you up in the emergency room 00:17:30.82\00:17:34.24 So you want to have some knowledge of how the drugs work 00:17:34.25\00:17:37.06 and most lay people simply 00:17:37.07\00:17:38.33 don't have that kind of background 00:17:38.34\00:17:40.03 So what I hear you saying is, 00:17:40.06\00:17:41.84 don't do this at home 00:17:41.85\00:17:43.24 You want to do it along with your doctor, that is, 00:17:43.25\00:17:46.21 if you want to start cutting back on the medication, 00:17:46.22\00:17:49.27 do it with your doctor's approval 00:17:49.28\00:17:51.18 And, you know, Doctor's 00:17:51.19\00:17:53.03 today are very reasonable 00:17:53.04\00:17:54.87 If a person is making positive lifestyle changes, 00:17:54.88\00:17:57.36 and they call the doctor 00:17:57.37\00:17:58.48 and they say, Doc my blood pressure is running 50, 00:17:58.49\00:18:01.75 when I wake up in the morning it 00:18:01.76\00:18:03.87 gets down to 40 sometimes after meals 00:18:03.88\00:18:06.33 Well the average doctor, I mean, 00:18:06.36\00:18:08.60 any doctor is going to tell you to cut back on the insulin 00:18:08.61\00:18:12.57 Or you gotta stop this oral medication. 00:18:12.66\00:18:15.09 We like to kind of nip that in the bud 00:18:15.10\00:18:17.36 and help a person never to 00:18:17.42\00:18:19.18 get the 40 or 50 blood sugar 00:18:19.19\00:18:21.00 Yes. So with her case, now what have- and i 00:18:21.09\00:18:27.81 know you're also the doctor for her husband 00:18:27.82\00:18:30.60 -Right. Does she have instructions 00:18:30.63\00:18:33.54 and does he have adequate instructions 00:18:33.55\00:18:36.63 so that they can leave here, comfortably go home, 00:18:36.64\00:18:40.69 and continue administering to his well-being? 00:18:40.70\00:18:44.36 We try to make sure that every patient 00:18:44.37\00:18:46.54 has a game plan when they go back home 00:18:46.55\00:18:48.69 So it's not just about what 00:18:48.70\00:18:50.54 happens here, over 18 days 00:18:50.55\00:18:52.27 It's really helping people have a new outlook, 00:18:52.28\00:18:54.72 a new approach on how they can live their life 00:18:54.73\00:18:57.15 And so definitely I've spoken with her husband, 00:18:57.16\00:19:00.42 Lou, as well as De and I think 00:19:00.43\00:19:02.48 they're both pretty squared away on what 00:19:02.49\00:19:05.30 needs to continue when they go back home 00:19:05.31\00:19:08.03 Now I also know that the guests 00:19:08.09\00:19:10.75 who come through the program can, 00:19:10.76\00:19:13.57 when they'd like, give you a call 00:19:13.58\00:19:16.36 or Dr. Ing or Dr. Lukens and you're 00:19:16.39\00:19:19.78 willing to support them on a phone call 00:19:19.79\00:19:23.54 We're definitely willing and I 00:19:23.60\00:19:25.27 always tell my patients, Ron, 00:19:25.28\00:19:26.66 I mean things can get incredibly hectic around here, 00:19:26.67\00:19:29.66 some of us wear alot of hats, I teach in the college 00:19:29.67\00:19:32.57 we do alot of community programs, 00:19:32.58\00:19:34.75 we do our media work, as well as see patients 00:19:34.76\00:19:37.66 And I tell all my patients, I try to encourage them, 00:19:37.67\00:19:41.00 if you don't hear back from me promptly, keep calling. 00:19:41.01\00:19:44.33 Keep sending me the emails 00:19:44.34\00:19:45.87 Because I'll be honest with you, sometimes things get 00:19:46.15\00:19:49.27 stacked up on my desk and it's not a primary care practice 00:19:49.28\00:19:52.60 So, we don't have 24-hour coverage, 00:19:52.66\00:19:55.12 we don't have an answering service. 00:19:55.13\00:19:57.42 It's designed as a 00:19:57.43\00:19:58.66 specialty referral practice 00:19:58.67\00:20:00.39 where we help people with lifestyle issues. 00:20:00.40\00:20:02.45 Now, I know there are viewers out 00:20:02.51\00:20:04.72 there that think they're very healthy, 00:20:04.73\00:20:07.15 Most of which, as we know, 00:20:07.16\00:20:10.45 are overweight 00:20:10.46\00:20:12.21 Some of which are 00:20:12.30\00:20:13.42 taking various medications 00:20:13.43\00:20:15.06 But because their husband, or their wife, 00:20:15.07\00:20:17.69 or their spouse is in worse shape, 00:20:17.70\00:20:19.84 they don't think there's 00:20:19.85\00:20:21.48 any problem with themselves 00:20:21.49\00:20:23.21 What I'm trying to say is, could you say something to them 00:20:23.24\00:20:27.15 that might inspire them and encourage them to seek help? 00:20:27.16\00:20:30.84 For sure. You know alot of people say, how can I take 00:20:30.85\00:20:34.18 the time and the expense to come to the NEWSTART program? 00:20:34.19\00:20:37.60 First of all, it's very 00:20:37.72\00:20:39.21 reasonably priced for what you get. 00:20:39.22\00:20:41.27 But let me tell it to you this way, don't wait 00:20:41.30\00:20:44.09 until you absolutely have to come to a program like this. 00:20:44.10\00:20:47.33 Take the initiative when you're aware of problems. 00:20:47.34\00:20:49.75 Don't say, well my blood pressure's controlled, 00:20:49.76\00:20:51.84 my diabetes is under control, 00:20:51.85\00:20:53.15 Really be proactive and try to 00:20:53.36\00:20:55.60 get here sooner rather than later. 00:20:55.61\00:20:58.15 Well said. Thank you, Dr. David. 00:20:58.39\00:21:00.57 I appreciate your time and thank you for joining us. 00:21:00.58\00:21:04.12 And thank you, friends but don't go away. 00:21:04.15\00:21:06.66 We have a tip for you. 00:21:06.67\00:21:08.06 Hello. I'm Dr. David DeRose. You know, helping a friend, 00:21:09.00\00:21:12.33 neighbor or relative have better health is one of 00:21:12.34\00:21:15.27 the most practical forms of health ministry available. 00:21:15.28\00:21:18.45 However, if you're not a health professional, 00:21:18.66\00:21:21.27 it can be extremely difficult to 00:21:21.28\00:21:23.06 know how to help someone access reliable, 00:21:23.07\00:21:25.33 credible up to date health information. 00:21:25.34\00:21:27.45 That's why I recommend 00:21:28.21\00:21:29.66 the NEWSTART Lifestyle Club. 00:21:29.67\00:21:31.48 The club is based on the world famous NEWSTART principles that 00:21:31.54\00:21:34.81 have helped millions be well 00:21:34.82\00:21:36.36 naturally without the use of drugs. 00:21:36.37\00:21:38.21 The club offers streaming video, 00:21:38.24\00:21:40.36 expert health advice, wellness tips, tools and more. 00:21:40.37\00:21:43.60 And when it comes to ministry, the NEWSTART 00:21:43.61\00:21:46.15 lifestyle club provides a way for sponsored 00:21:46.16\00:21:48.57 churches and health organizations to connect 00:21:48.58\00:21:51.15 with club members in their own communities. 00:21:51.16\00:21:53.42 If you'd like to learn more about how the NEWSTART 00:21:53.43\00:21:56.27 lifestyle club can make a 00:21:56.28\00:21:57.66 difference in your health outreach, call 00:21:57.67\00:21:59.87 And ask for your free copy of 00:22:03.75\00:22:06.21 Health Evangelism Made Simple. 00:22:06.22\00:22:08.57 Hello and welcome to NEWSTART At Home. 00:22:25.06\00:22:27.12 I'm your host, Don Mackintosh. 00:22:27.13\00:22:28.63 and today we have in the studio with us, 00:22:28.64\00:22:31.21 Doctor Doug Plata. 00:22:31.22\00:22:32.33 Welcome, Doctor. -Thank you. 00:22:32.34\00:22:34.06 You are a specialist in family medicine but 00:22:34.12\00:22:37.12 also preventative medicine. -That's correct. 00:22:37.13\00:22:40.00 One of the things we've been talking about is the lack of 00:22:40.01\00:22:44.39 hydration people have. 00:22:44.40\00:22:46.51 They're not drinking enough water, 00:22:46.52\00:22:48.09 or maybe some people drink too much 00:22:48.12\00:22:49.81 but we want to talk about water today. 00:22:49.82\00:22:51.66 How important is it? 00:22:51.67\00:22:53.06 It's extremely important. 00:22:53.07\00:22:54.66 There's studies showing that for heart health it's actually about 00:22:54.87\00:22:58.81 important as many of the other common 00:22:58.82\00:23:01.15 treatments that we have for heart disease. 00:23:01.16\00:23:03.63 By making sure you get an adequate 00:23:04.30\00:23:07.69 amount versus those people who are low end, 00:23:07.70\00:23:09.54 the difference meet is about 50 00:23:09.55\00:23:11.30 percent reduction in risk of heart attack. 00:23:11.31\00:23:15.75 And that's probably because the blood gets more 00:23:16.00\00:23:18.42 viscous and more sticky and 00:23:18.43\00:23:19.81 maybe causes the coronary events? 00:23:19.82\00:23:21.54 We're not entirely sure but that's probably at least 00:23:21.57\00:23:24.69 part of the reason. I'm guessing that's what it is. 00:23:24.70\00:23:27.69 So, what kind of water should we drink? 00:23:27.75\00:23:30.69 Tap water, distilled water? 00:23:30.70\00:23:32.69 I mean, there's all kinds of exotic waters. I go to the store 00:23:32.72\00:23:35.69 and I could see a bottle that 00:23:35.70\00:23:37.12 will cost me $1.72 or a buck maybe, 00:23:37.13\00:23:41.18 And then I can find this exotic water that's, you know, 00:23:41.19\00:23:44.12 I'm not saying it's ten bucks but there's a big vast 00:23:44.13\00:23:46.72 variation and they have different labels of stuff. 00:23:46.73\00:23:49.39 How do I navigate that? 00:23:49.40\00:23:50.69 The first thing that I'd like to point out is, 00:23:50.70\00:23:53.00 regardless of the type of the water, 00:23:53.01\00:23:54.63 getting enough water is the 00:23:54.64\00:23:56.03 number one message, first and foremost. 00:23:56.04\00:23:57.75 When it comes to the type of water, 00:23:57.76\00:24:00.48 there have been a number of different studies done on this. 00:24:00.49\00:24:05.00 And again make 00:24:05.01\00:24:06.45 sure you get water. 00:24:06.46\00:24:08.39 Probably one of the more unhealthy 00:24:09.03\00:24:11.54 forms of water is actually distilled water. 00:24:11.55\00:24:14.63 I know this is going to come as a surprise 00:24:14.64\00:24:17.39 and perhaps concern to some of the listeners. 00:24:17.40\00:24:20.18 But what distilled water does is it 00:24:20.24\00:24:22.42 separates out the minerals from the water, 00:24:22.43\00:24:24.87 and what we're finding out is that those minerals 00:24:24.88\00:24:27.54 are there for a reason, in particular, cardiac health. 00:24:27.55\00:24:30.39 So tap water is good then, after all. 00:24:30.42\00:24:32.87 Depends on the local 00:24:32.88\00:24:34.30 environment in terms of like if there's chemicals in there. 00:24:34.31\00:24:38.12 I think many of us have chosen to go with water that's 00:24:38.15\00:24:41.36 like from the stream source, you know, mountain water. 00:24:41.37\00:24:44.51 And then what about filtered with charcoal? 00:24:44.57\00:24:46.63 It's probably better because it does take out 00:24:46.69\00:24:50.03 some of the chlorine and some of the other substances 00:24:50.04\00:24:53.66 Okay, so how much water should i drink? 00:24:53.67\00:24:58.39 I always hear this 6 to 8 glasses. 00:24:58.40\00:25:00.45 Is that valid, or how do you tell? 00:25:00.46\00:25:03.39 The problem is people come in different sizes, 00:25:03.40\00:25:06.33 they have different needs, and if it's 00:25:06.34\00:25:08.69 a hot day versus if you're exercising, 00:25:08.70\00:25:11.12 You know 6 to 8 glasses is maybe a good 00:25:11.87\00:25:14.45 rule of thumb but I think far better is to 00:25:14.46\00:25:17.15 actually sort of let your urine actually be 00:25:17.16\00:25:19.84 the guide in terms of how much you should get. 00:25:19.85\00:25:22.66 So my urine being the guide is somewhat interesting. 00:25:22.67\00:25:26.54 I never thought of being led by my urine. 00:25:26.55\00:25:29.51 But what do you mean by this? 00:25:29.52\00:25:30.87 What do you mean by the urine being the guide? 00:25:30.88\00:25:33.12 Yeah, as we pee in the toilet, as you take a 00:25:33.15\00:25:35.63 look at the color of your urine in the toilet, 00:25:35.64\00:25:38.24 it's pretty straightforward but something 00:25:38.25\00:25:40.54 that we need to really pay attention to. 00:25:40.55\00:25:42.75 If it's really dark yellow, we're not getting enough water. 00:25:42.78\00:25:46.63 If it's clear then we know we're doing a good job. 00:25:46.64\00:25:49.78 So it should be as close to clear 00:25:49.79\00:25:51.87 as possible. -Really that's true. 00:25:51.88\00:25:54.03 And if you're seeing that it's not, 00:25:54.04\00:25:56.33 you need to drink 2, 3, 00:25:56.34\00:25:57.81 4 more glasses. -Get more water. 00:25:57.82\00:25:59.81 But the problem is urine 00:25:59.82\00:26:01.15 comes at the end, in other words, 00:26:01.16\00:26:03.39 it's what you should've been doing before, 00:26:03.40\00:26:04.87 so how can you make sure that you're getting enough? 00:26:04.88\00:26:07.48 What you can do is you can use the 00:26:07.51\00:26:09.69 urine as a general guide. It's a reminder. 00:26:09.70\00:26:12.39 I'm not getting enough water, so I need to do things to be 00:26:12.40\00:26:14.45 able to help get enough water as evidence by a clear urine. 00:26:14.46\00:26:20.06 Okay, so I get my water bottle. 00:26:20.07\00:26:22.33 Can the water be damaged at 00:26:22.34\00:26:24.27 all by being in the sun in a plastic bottle? 00:26:24.28\00:26:27.45 Tell us about that. 00:26:27.46\00:26:28.69 Yeah, there is significant concerns about certain 00:26:28.70\00:26:31.84 substances within plastics. 00:26:31.85\00:26:33.63 The harder the plastic, the better. 00:26:33.64\00:26:35.75 For me, I actually got a stainless steel container or a 00:26:35.76\00:26:40.75 glass container is probably one of the safer ways to store. 00:26:40.76\00:26:46.03 If you have it in the sun, if it's in a 00:26:46.04\00:26:48.09 plastic bottle, it's probably not good. 00:26:48.10\00:26:50.12 There's certain chemicals that can 00:26:50.13\00:26:51.87 sort of leech into the water. 00:26:51.88\00:26:53.39 But if it's in glass or something 00:26:53.45\00:26:55.48 that's not going to leech out that's better. 00:26:55.49\00:26:58.12 So the most important thing is, get water -Yes. 00:26:58.13\00:27:00.81 Get enough water based on 6 to 8 00:27:00.82\00:27:02.66 glasses as a rule of thumb but really look 00:27:02.67\00:27:05.15 at your urine to see if it's clear or not, 00:27:05.16\00:27:07.48 Make sure you're getting the best kind of water in 00:27:07.78\00:27:11.39 terms of the container, so you don't have an interaction 00:27:11.40\00:27:15.33 But the real bottom line is make sure 00:27:15.39\00:27:17.33 and get water. You really need water. 00:27:17.34\00:27:19.12 It's really hard to overdo it. -Put it on your desk, 00:27:19.13\00:27:21.60 have it with you, carry it, whatever you can do. 00:27:21.61\00:27:23.87 We've been talking with Doctor Doug Plata and 00:27:23.88\00:27:26.30 we're thankful that you came to be with us today. 00:27:26.31\00:27:28.75 We're glad that you came to be with us as well.
