Hi friends and welcome to another edition of NEWSTART Now! 00:00:23.69\00:00:28.09 In our studio we have Jim Lorenz with us. 00:00:28.21\00:00:31.60 Jim came to us about 17 days ago 00:00:32.15\00:00:35.42 looking for some help with his condition. 00:00:35.43\00:00:39.54 And we want to take a look at Jim when he first arrived. 00:00:39.55\00:00:43.30 I've had cancer for the last 4 years. 00:00:44.09\00:00:47.60 I've had conventional therapy, surgery, radiation, 00:00:47.61\00:00:51.39 a lot of chemotherapy and finally in the last month 00:00:51.40\00:00:57.30 my oncologist said there was nothing more he could do. 00:00:57.36\00:01:00.69 And so we went to Stanford and did a follow up with them 00:01:00.84\00:01:07.60 and the oncologist there was even more direct, she said, 00:01:07.87\00:01:11.60 you're lucky to have lived this long with your diagnosis. 00:01:12.66\00:01:15.30 Go home and enjoy the remaintaining 00:01:15.31\00:01:17.12 time you have and get ready to die. 00:01:17.13\00:01:18.81 I hope to see continued improvement. 00:01:19.30\00:01:22.27 I think even in just these two 00:01:22.28\00:01:24.66 days I feel a little bit better. 00:01:24.67\00:01:26.33 I've had some pain from the cancer 00:01:26.34\00:01:28.06 but even in these two days I think it's a little better. 00:01:28.24\00:01:30.78 Now that might be in my head, I don't know. 00:01:30.79\00:01:32.72 But I would like to see that improve 00:01:33.00\00:01:35.42 and I'd like to see a more vital person. 00:01:35.43\00:01:38.15 And to get around and just feel better 00:01:39.81\00:01:43.27 and to maintain this once we leave here. 00:01:43.28\00:01:46.69 Welcome back friends and in our studio, Dr. 00:01:50.03\00:01:54.24 Jim Lorenz! How are you sir? 00:01:54.25\00:01:56.60 Fine, thank you. 00:01:56.61\00:01:57.60 It's good to see you - It's good to be here. 00:01:57.63\00:01:59.30 I want to get right into your experience here 00:01:59.36\00:02:02.21 because I expect a 00:02:02.22\00:02:03.69 different interview with a doctor. 00:02:03.70\00:02:06.45 Your practice was with 00:02:08.60\00:02:10.18 family medicine? - That's correct. 00:02:10.19\00:02:12.42 In Turlock, CA? - Yes. 00:02:12.69\00:02:15.27 From your professional opinion, how are we doing? 00:02:15.75\00:02:19.66 Good! It's been a good two and a half weeks here. 00:02:20.15\00:02:23.36 Could you tell us what specifically you came here for? 00:02:25.66\00:02:29.75 I mean we heard you in your first interview but 00:02:29.76\00:02:32.72 there must be a reason you had, something you needed to learn, 00:02:33.03\00:02:37.39 to cause you to come here. 00:02:38.27\00:02:39.60 Yes because the diagnosis of 00:02:39.84\00:02:42.48 cancer had gotten to the point where 00:02:42.49\00:02:45.69 they thought there was nothing more they could do. 00:02:45.84\00:02:47.84 And someone had suggested Weimar so we looked into it and 00:02:48.27\00:02:53.60 came and talked with them and it made more and more sense 00:02:53.61\00:02:56.72 that a vegan lifestyle would 00:02:57.09\00:02:59.48 be potentially helpful for cancer treatment. 00:02:59.49\00:03:03.21 And it really has been an 00:03:03.72\00:03:06.30 educational process for my wife and myself. 00:03:06.31\00:03:10.45 I feel stronger having been here and 00:03:11.69\00:03:13.87 the information has been really valuable. 00:03:13.88\00:03:16.36 We're anxious to go on from here. 00:03:17.45\00:03:19.72 We've made a lifestyle change in several ways 00:03:20.18\00:03:22.72 and we're hopeful now. 00:03:23.18\00:03:24.24 Now tell our viewers what you're 00:03:26.00\00:03:28.36 thinking about having made this lifestyle change 00:03:28.37\00:03:32.36 are you 80 or 90 percent raw are 00:03:32.60\00:03:35.03 you going to go in that direction? 00:03:35.04\00:03:37.42 I'm not 80 or 90 percent raw yet. 00:03:37.87\00:03:39.81 Probably 60 percent. 00:03:39.82\00:03:41.03 But I liked vegetables and fruit already so 00:03:41.75\00:03:45.24 I don't think it'll be a big change for us. 00:03:45.25\00:03:48.57 But we plan to work in that direction. 00:03:49.57\00:03:51.39 What I mean by raw of course is raw foods. 00:03:52.15\00:03:55.87 We know that cancers can't 00:03:56.03\00:03:57.60 live on broccoli - Right! 00:03:57.61\00:03:59.15 But they love stakes! - That's right! 00:04:00.72\00:04:03.45 And fish! So, you've decided to become vegan 00:04:03.57\00:04:09.21 and your purpose and reason for being here is to learn about 00:04:09.54\00:04:13.87 being vegan, living the lifestyle, 00:04:14.21\00:04:16.48 learning the laws of health, 00:04:16.49\00:04:18.36 which you already knew to some degree being a doctor. 00:04:18.75\00:04:21.66 Sure. 00:04:22.03\00:04:23.06 Not as much about the nutritional 00:04:23.57\00:04:25.66 aspect as I would've liked to have known. 00:04:25.67\00:04:28.24 But this has been very instructive here and for 00:04:28.33\00:04:31.72 instance I have always liked milk and I find out that that 00:04:31.73\00:04:35.21 has something in it that's not good 00:04:35.36\00:04:37.21 for us either. It encourages cancer. 00:04:37.22\00:04:39.06 So there are cancer patients out there 00:04:41.00\00:04:45.15 that need to hear your testimony because 00:04:45.16\00:04:49.42 some of them have run out of time. 00:04:49.87\00:04:52.12 Some of them are giving up. 00:04:52.13\00:04:53.72 What can you say to that person who's giving up? 00:04:53.73\00:04:56.66 I would say don't give up! 00:04:57.12\00:04:58.42 I think that this is something we should have 00:04:58.43\00:05:01.78 looked at early on in our cancer treatment. 00:05:02.03\00:05:05.12 To make a lifestyle change and become a vegan. 00:05:05.13\00:05:07.42 And I think it makes sense from a medical standpoint 00:05:07.60\00:05:12.48 and certainly from a 00:05:12.75\00:05:14.06 spiritual standpoint too. But I think 00:05:14.07\00:05:16.24 the entire lifestyle, the food, 00:05:16.54\00:05:19.72 the vegan diet, and the exercise emphasis 00:05:19.73\00:05:23.78 is really essential and I think that people need 00:05:24.03\00:05:26.66 to do that early on in their treatment for cancer. 00:05:26.67\00:05:29.33 But it's never too late. 00:05:29.78\00:05:31.12 No, I would encourage anyone to come. 00:05:31.21\00:05:33.33 I think you can feel better and 00:05:33.34\00:05:35.21 stronger and I think when we do that 00:05:35.22\00:05:37.33 it gives us better chances of longevity. 00:05:37.54\00:05:42.51 And if not longevity at least 00:05:42.52\00:05:44.48 better quality than what we have. 00:05:44.49\00:05:46.60 What did you like the most about the NEWSTART program? 00:05:48.54\00:05:53.03 Well, I think that when people come here 00:05:55.57\00:05:59.00 they have some apprehension about the food. 00:05:59.01\00:06:00.63 I didn't have any and I 00:06:03.24\00:06:04.66 know you didn't - Okay. 00:06:04.67\00:06:06.12 I really have to say we didn't 00:06:10.06\00:06:11.57 have any meals that weren't good. 00:06:11.58\00:06:13.27 At all the meals the food has been really amazingly good. 00:06:13.42\00:06:17.09 We've enjoyed that and a re-emphasis on exercise too. 00:06:17.36\00:06:21.75 And then the spiritual component. I think those 00:06:22.06\00:06:25.12 three things together 00:06:25.13\00:06:27.87 strengthen a person in a totality. 00:06:27.88\00:06:32.33 What about the spiritual aspect? 00:06:34.42\00:06:36.66 We have that everyday and it was encouraged. 00:06:37.36\00:06:40.87 I appreciate from the staff standpoint that 00:06:41.15\00:06:43.69 universally these are kind and spiritual people. 00:06:44.54\00:06:48.57 And that comes through in their presentations. 00:06:48.78\00:06:52.00 They often have prayer before lectures and before your visits. 00:06:52.69\00:06:55.57 And that is a comforting thing as well as a beneficial thing 00:06:56.84\00:07:01.84 because I think God can do things for us that we can't do. 00:07:02.18\00:07:04.60 Amen. 00:07:04.61\00:07:05.60 We know that and witness that every month in each session. 00:07:06.12\00:07:10.81 I want to ask you about food again. 00:07:11.33\00:07:13.69 Were you vegetarian or near vegetarian before you came here? 00:07:13.70\00:07:17.69 I wasn't vegetarian but we ate a primarily meatless diet. 00:07:18.06\00:07:23.57 But we ate some meat. 00:07:23.87\00:07:25.00 But quite a lot of 00:07:25.39\00:07:27.69 lacto-ovo vegetarianism primarily. 00:07:27.70\00:07:31.84 We still used milk and eggs quite a lot. 00:07:31.85\00:07:34.42 So you're going back home and you're going to be a vegan. 00:07:36.42\00:07:40.12 Is your spouse going to be? 00:07:40.13\00:07:41.75 Do you have a spouse? I'm not sure. 00:07:42.06\00:07:43.75 Yes, she came with me during the week. 00:07:43.76\00:07:45.69 Right, okay. 00:07:45.70\00:07:46.69 And it's a big help because my learning 00:07:46.70\00:07:49.39 curve with cooking is much bigger than her's. 00:07:49.40\00:07:52.36 So it's going to be a big help to me. 00:07:53.81\00:07:55.54 Well Jim, if you're stalling there 00:07:55.57\00:07:58.51 in the kitchen just grab a carrot. 00:07:58.52\00:08:01.36 Okay, that's good advice! 00:08:01.66\00:08:03.51 I'm glad I don't do much cooking 00:08:05.18\00:08:07.87 these days but I can if necessary. 00:08:07.88\00:08:11.12 So, we've talked about the cooking and the exercise. 00:08:11.45\00:08:15.60 What about the hydrotherapy? 00:08:15.61\00:08:17.12 Do you feel like that had an effect on your body? 00:08:17.24\00:08:20.39 I think it can. I haven't noticed a marked change yet. 00:08:21.78\00:08:25.57 But I expect to see 00:08:26.12\00:08:28.06 something in the future with that. 00:08:28.07\00:08:31.33 I had what we call a fever treatment which raises 00:08:31.63\00:08:35.06 the body temprature for a certain period of time 00:08:35.07\00:08:38.24 and I hope to continue doing 00:08:38.54\00:08:40.27 something similar to that as I go home. 00:08:40.28\00:08:42.51 I think that should help as we have 00:08:42.66\00:08:47.42 a multipronged attack on the cancer. 00:08:47.43\00:08:52.15 Good. Now your doctor is? 00:08:52.18\00:08:56.24 Dr. Ing. - Dr. Ing. 00:08:56.45\00:08:58.42 And will you be staying in 00:08:58.43\00:08:59.84 contact with Dr. Ing? - Yes we will. 00:08:59.85\00:09:02.09 Will he be working in tandem with your present doctor, 00:09:02.12\00:09:06.78 or how is that going to work? 00:09:06.79\00:09:08.24 We didn't so much talk about that 00:09:09.03\00:09:11.18 but I would hope that'd be the case. 00:09:11.19\00:09:13.42 My oncologist said before I came that he 00:09:13.60\00:09:15.63 was anxious to see what would transpire here too. 00:09:15.64\00:09:18.69 So we will keep him informed and 00:09:19.06\00:09:20.78 maybe the two can discuss my case as well. 00:09:20.79\00:09:25.12 Now tonight is graduation. We have a graduation dinner, 00:09:25.72\00:09:29.48 will your wife be joining you tonight? 00:09:29.49\00:09:30.75 Yes, she will. 00:09:30.76\00:09:31.87 And then you'll drive home together tonight, 00:09:32.00\00:09:33.48 or tomorrow morning? 00:09:33.49\00:09:34.51 Tomorrow. - Okay. 00:09:34.52\00:09:35.87 We have about a minute left is there something you can say 00:09:36.48\00:09:40.69 to perhaps encourage or inspire someone 00:09:40.87\00:09:44.00 who is really at the end of their rope? 00:09:44.01\00:09:46.84 Well I know the diagnosis of cancer 00:09:47.81\00:09:50.51 usually creates feelings of death and finality 00:09:50.52\00:09:53.87 but I would encourage you to not give up. 00:09:54.18\00:09:56.87 There are things we can do to improve the quality of our life 00:09:57.21\00:10:01.63 and hopefully to extend our life as well. 00:10:01.64\00:10:04.03 And I look at it not only in my own personal life but also 00:10:04.24\00:10:08.36 for my wife, kids, and grandkids. 00:10:08.81\00:10:11.33 But certainly don't give up. There are things that 00:10:11.51\00:10:14.60 can be done just make yourself available to them. 00:10:14.61\00:10:17.57 Jim, thank you for being on our show. 00:10:18.12\00:10:19.84 Well thank you. 00:10:19.85\00:10:20.84 God bless you and stay in touch for sure! 00:10:20.85\00:10:23.75 And folks, thank you, but don't go away we're 00:10:23.84\00:10:26.42 going to be talking with Dr. Ing right after this! 00:10:26.43\00:10:29.45 Well you've done very well. 00:10:30.81\00:10:32.33 Do you have diabetes, heart disease, 00:10:39.06\00:10:41.27 high blood pressure or do you weigh too much? 00:10:41.28\00:10:44.30 Hi, My name is Doctor Ing and I'd like to tell you about 00:10:44.87\00:10:47.48 our 18 day NEWSTART lifestyle program. 00:10:47.49\00:10:50.69 It includes a comprehensive medical evaluation 00:10:51.42\00:10:54.12 with laboratory studies and a exercise stress test, 00:10:54.13\00:10:57.36 physician consolations, 00:10:57.37\00:10:59.87 culinary school, 00:10:59.88\00:11:01.51 and an opportunity to walk on beautiful trails 00:11:02.12\00:11:05.06 in the foothills of the sierras. 00:11:05.18\00:11:07.42 Your health is one of the most important things that you have. 00:11:09.00\00:11:12.03 Don't wait. The big "C" 00:11:48.07\00:11:52.45 Could you begin by telling us, 00:11:53.00\00:11:57.03 Jim tells us he's feeling better, 00:11:57.04\00:12:01.27 how could he be feeling better 00:12:01.81\00:12:03.63 in two weeks while having cancer? 00:12:03.64\00:12:05.57 Well a large part of the way you feel is your 00:12:06.15\00:12:09.87 outlook on life and that's really important. 00:12:09.88\00:12:13.57 With a positive attitude 00:12:13.87\00:12:15.84 things are going to go a lot better. 00:12:15.85\00:12:18.69 I was just reading something 00:12:19.00\00:12:21.48 in a familiar text, Proverbs 17:22. 00:12:21.49\00:12:24.51 It says a merry heart doeth good like a medicine. 00:12:24.52\00:12:27.00 The good news is, the bible said it a 00:12:28.39\00:12:30.21 little bit differently but the thought is, 00:12:30.22\00:12:32.18 why do you want to be sad and die slowly? 00:12:32.19\00:12:34.78 In other words why not choose to be happy? 00:12:34.84\00:12:37.12 So no matter what happens to you, 00:12:37.48\00:12:39.60 no matter what adversity, 00:12:40.06\00:12:42.69 challenge, or opportunity you face 00:12:42.70\00:12:46.27 with a positive outlook things go a lot better. 00:12:46.45\00:12:48.72 So that is really important. 00:12:48.73\00:12:50.15 I know there's viewers out there that 00:12:50.78\00:12:53.18 have cancer and are watching us right now. 00:12:53.19\00:12:55.72 What can we say to them to give them some hope? 00:12:56.57\00:12:59.06 Well I think one of the things that's 00:12:59.60\00:13:01.87 important for anyone who's facing cancer is 00:13:01.88\00:13:04.54 you really need to be on the 00:13:04.66\00:13:06.75 best diet you can possibly be on. 00:13:06.76\00:13:09.21 And from the study of nutrition and 00:13:09.66\00:13:12.33 what the bible says man's original diet, 00:13:12.34\00:13:15.27 a plant based diet, is really the best diet. 00:13:15.28\00:13:17.75 The medical evidence shows that those 00:13:18.42\00:13:21.12 who eat a completely plant based diet 00:13:21.13\00:13:23.63 have much less cancer, heart diease, 00:13:23.75\00:13:26.15 diabetes, high blood pressure, and strokes 00:13:26.16\00:13:28.75 than those on the standard american diet. 00:13:29.03\00:13:31.33 By the way the acronym for stand american diet is S.A.D. 00:13:31.57\00:13:35.24 That's something people don't recognise but it's true. 00:13:36.39\00:13:39.09 Going back to man's original diet is a great place to start. 00:13:40.63\00:13:45.75 I think that if people would revert to this diet as soon 00:13:46.12\00:13:50.03 as they find out they have 00:13:50.04\00:13:51.81 cancer if they haven't been on it 00:13:51.82\00:13:54.15 that would give them their best 00:13:54.36\00:13:56.42 chances for survival and overcoming. 00:13:56.43\00:13:58.69 Is there any truth in what I read from The China 00:13:59.24\00:14:04.60 Study that a raw food diet, maybe 80 or 90 percent raw 00:14:04.61\00:14:10.15 can ward off and possibly even reverse some cancers? 00:14:10.45\00:14:14.66 Well, I think that the evidence shows that people who 00:14:14.81\00:14:20.66 have been on an entirely plant based diet all their life 00:14:20.67\00:14:23.30 I don't think we can say they'll never get cancer. 00:14:23.72\00:14:26.18 But their odds of getting cancer are far, far, lower. 00:14:26.39\00:14:31.63 Not only will they be able to avoid cancer but heart disease, 00:14:32.39\00:14:36.00 high blood pressure, diabetes, 00:14:36.01\00:14:37.81 and strokes go along the same way. 00:14:37.82\00:14:40.00 There was an editorial in the 00:14:40.30\00:14:41.39 Journal of the American Medical Association 00:14:41.40\00:14:43.69 about 49 1/2 years ago. It was September of 1961. 00:14:44.06\00:14:49.06 It said with a vegetarian diet 97 00:14:49.24\00:14:51.84 percent of heart attacks could be avoided. 00:14:51.85\00:14:55.18 That would be awesome! 00:14:55.39\00:14:56.54 Now I know the hospitals and the heart 00:14:56.72\00:14:58.75 surgeons and cardiologists might not be so happy but 00:14:58.76\00:15:01.48 I think our country would be happy 00:15:01.87\00:15:03.84 because we would save loads of money! 00:15:03.85\00:15:06.00 Billions and billions. - Yes! 00:15:06.12\00:15:07.66 The evidence is there. There have been many 00:15:09.36\00:15:11.51 different groups who have verified this, Dr. 00:15:11.52\00:15:15.27 Caldwell Esselstyn who will be 00:15:15.28\00:15:17.33 one of our speakers for alumni week. 00:15:17.34\00:15:19.69 That's coming up this June, 00:15:20.06\00:15:22.06 here, in 2011. - That's right! 00:15:22.07\00:15:24.21 Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn. 00:15:24.24\00:15:25.69 Yes, he's going to be talking here. 00:15:25.70\00:15:28.06 Dr. Dean Ornish, who I recently heard at the American 00:15:28.33\00:15:32.69 College of Preventive Medicine just a few weeks ago. 00:15:32.70\00:15:35.21 And many other physicians are 00:15:35.66\00:15:37.42 advocating the advantages of a plant based diet. 00:15:37.43\00:15:40.63 Not only for heart disease but for many of the 00:15:40.64\00:15:43.33 chronic diseases that afflict the American people. 00:15:43.34\00:15:46.21 And are most of these diseases not lifestyle diseases? 00:15:46.54\00:15:50.15 Absolutely! That's what's so 00:15:50.42\00:15:52.36 exciting about this meeting I just went to 00:15:52.37\00:15:55.15 down in San Antonio, TX. It was 00:15:55.51\00:15:58.12 an annual meeting for the 00:15:58.27\00:15:59.54 American College of Preventive Medicine. 00:15:59.55\00:16:01.51 And finally people are saying, for heart disease, 00:16:01.72\00:16:07.00 diabetes and things, 00:16:07.01\00:16:08.57 yes you can pass out medicines that 00:16:08.58\00:16:11.33 do things but the root of the 00:16:12.39\00:16:15.06 problem is the lifestyle of our population. 00:16:15.07\00:16:18.78 I know people might take this as a sales pitch but truly 00:16:19.24\00:16:24.03 if you were to come to our NEWSTART 00:16:24.27\00:16:27.06 program or any other NEWSTART program 00:16:27.07\00:16:29.84 and just put in place the basic principles that we teach 00:16:30.21\00:16:36.57 many things that are ailing people 00:16:36.84\00:16:39.63 today can just reverse and disappear 00:16:39.64\00:16:42.51 as we've seen here. - This is really true. 00:16:42.66\00:16:45.00 I heard Dr. David Katzin, 00:16:45.24\00:16:48.00 his approach was to eat mostly of plants. 00:16:48.01\00:16:52.30 Which I agree with but I go a little bit farther to where Dr. 00:16:52.63\00:16:56.75 Neal Barnard says and eat totally of plants. 00:16:56.76\00:17:00.12 What we say here is whole plant foods. 00:17:00.63\00:17:03.66 And Dr. Barnard's approach to managing diabetes 00:17:03.84\00:17:09.00 is very similar to ours and of course 00:17:09.09\00:17:11.51 he gets results equally as good as ours. 00:17:11.52\00:17:14.12 So it makes a profound difference on people's 00:17:14.13\00:17:17.72 health and their quality and enjoyment of life. 00:17:17.73\00:17:20.51 Another exciting thing was just brought 00:17:20.75\00:17:23.03 out as I was talking to some of the people 00:17:23.04\00:17:25.33 who came here and their usual diet would be 00:17:25.60\00:17:28.27 going out to McDonald's and ordering something. 00:17:28.28\00:17:31.09 One said, well when I go home I'm going to 00:17:31.10\00:17:33.24 have to do things a little bit differently. 00:17:33.25\00:17:35.39 He's been planning about this and he said, 00:17:37.45\00:17:40.12 I was really surprised that while I 00:17:40.13\00:17:42.87 was here I didn't miss having meat. 00:17:42.88\00:17:45.63 In other words, they were amazed that a 00:17:45.75\00:17:47.81 plant based diet could taste this good! 00:17:47.82\00:17:49.84 And that's true, it not only can taste good, 00:17:50.15\00:17:52.63 it's good for you and you'll feel 00:17:52.64\00:17:55.84 better when you eat that type of food. 00:17:55.85\00:17:59.51 Getting back to Jim, 00:18:00.27\00:18:02.09 I know you've counseled with him, 00:18:02.10\00:18:04.84 you've visited together, 00:18:05.18\00:18:07.63 he's a doctor he had a family practice, 00:18:07.64\00:18:11.51 he's a learened man. Did he get it 00:18:13.18\00:18:16.51 any faster than I would, or anyone else? 00:18:16.52\00:18:20.36 I don't know if he got it and faster 00:18:20.66\00:18:23.15 but he realised the importance of it. 00:18:23.16\00:18:25.51 And as we were talking about diet and 00:18:25.78\00:18:29.81 nutrition just today I said, really for you 00:18:29.82\00:18:34.42 a 100 percent plant based diet is the way you want to go. 00:18:34.66\00:18:38.21 As you've already emphasized more raw foods is better. 00:18:38.45\00:18:43.33 I usually tell the patients, 00:18:43.39\00:18:45.66 eat as much raw food as you're willing to eat 00:18:45.67\00:18:48.57 and then take five bites more. 00:18:48.72\00:18:50.81 All the many types of vegetables you 00:18:51.06\00:18:54.69 can eat raw like all your salad greens, 00:18:54.70\00:18:58.60 cucumbers, tomatoes, raddishes and things like that. 00:18:58.63\00:19:02.78 Califlour, broccoli, you can even eat asparagus raw, corn. 00:19:03.15\00:19:07.78 When they get used to doing this 00:19:08.09\00:19:10.18 they're amazed that it really does taste good. 00:19:10.19\00:19:13.39 Taste's delicious! - And it's good for you! 00:19:13.81\00:19:16.12 And if you're overweight, which Jim isn't, 00:19:16.33\00:19:19.15 it makes it so much easier to lose 00:19:19.33\00:19:21.51 weight with that type of approach. 00:19:21.52\00:19:23.63 Now is there anything specifically that 00:19:24.18\00:19:26.42 you've advised him, I know we touched on it 00:19:26.43\00:19:29.24 but I know there are other guests that come here 00:19:30.54\00:19:33.15 that might have a chronic disease that if they do this 00:19:33.42\00:19:36.78 it'll go away but for him when you hear 00:19:37.15\00:19:40.18 that C word people are sometimes afraid 00:19:40.19\00:19:43.12 this means death, it's the end of the road. 00:19:43.33\00:19:46.69 But do we encourage people to have that belief, 00:19:47.36\00:19:50.24 or do we leave them with hope that 00:19:50.60\00:19:54.24 maybe it will disappear or at least subside? 00:19:54.25\00:19:58.69 That's a very good question. 00:19:58.72\00:20:00.54 Healing comes from God. The same one who forgives us, 00:20:02.15\00:20:05.60 as it says in Psalms 103, is the same one who heals us. 00:20:05.61\00:20:09.18 It's interesting as we read in the bible, Exodus 15: 00:20:09.51\00:20:13.78 26 talks about if the children of 00:20:13.79\00:20:16.06 Israel would listen to the voice of the Lord 00:20:16.07\00:20:18.84 and would follow his commandments none of the 00:20:19.12\00:20:22.63 diseases which afflicted the Egyptians would come to them. 00:20:22.64\00:20:27.15 The application in our lives today is, 00:20:28.66\00:20:31.48 if we will not live like the 00:20:31.49\00:20:33.48 world if we will follow the counsels 00:20:33.49\00:20:35.75 of God as far as health and activity, 00:20:35.76\00:20:38.12 we can largely avoid all of these problems. 00:20:38.24\00:20:40.87 And if we haven't been doing that and we 00:20:41.18\00:20:43.60 should become afflicted with those diseases 00:20:43.61\00:20:46.00 reverting back to that diet and lifestyle, 00:20:46.21\00:20:50.27 adequate rest, good plant based nutrition, 00:20:50.28\00:20:54.27 water, avoiding coffee, tea, tobacco, 00:20:54.39\00:20:56.87 alchohol and abiding faith and trust in God. 00:20:56.88\00:20:59.84 Then I think we can 00:21:00.12\00:21:01.27 confidently call upon God when we're 00:21:01.28\00:21:03.39 obeying His guidlines, rules, whatever you want to call them, 00:21:03.54\00:21:08.51 that we can call upon Him and say, 00:21:08.75\00:21:10.18 Lord if it's according to your will that I be healed 00:21:10.19\00:21:12.63 and restored to health and strength I ask you for that. 00:21:12.64\00:21:15.72 But I am willing to accept your will for me. 00:21:16.03\00:21:18.81 Amen. 00:21:18.82\00:21:20.27 We've run out of time. 00:21:20.36\00:21:22.00 I thank you for being here Dr. Ing. 00:21:22.01\00:21:24.42 It's good to see you and friends don't 00:21:24.43\00:21:26.51 go away we have a tip for you right now! 00:21:26.52\00:21:28.66 Hello, I'm Dr. David DeRose. 00:21:29.66\00:21:32.51 You know helping a friend, 00:21:32.52\00:21:33.87 neighbor, or relative have better 00:21:33.88\00:21:35.60 health is one of the most practical 00:21:35.61\00:21:37.69 forms of health ministry available. 00:21:37.70\00:21:39.72 However if you're not a health professional 00:21:39.81\00:21:41.63 it can be extremely difficult to know 00:21:41.64\00:21:43.84 how to help someone access reliable, 00:21:43.85\00:21:46.06 credible, up to date health information. 00:21:46.07\00:21:48.63 That's why I recommend the NEWSTART Lifestyle Club. 00:21:49.18\00:21:52.36 The Club is based on the world famous NEWSTART principles that 00:21:52.48\00:21:55.78 have helped millions be well 00:21:55.79\00:21:57.36 naturally without the use of drugs. 00:21:57.37\00:21:59.24 The Club offers streaming video, 00:21:59.36\00:22:01.39 expert health advice, wellness tips, tools, and more! 00:22:01.40\00:22:04.66 And when it comes to ministry the NEWSTART 00:22:05.18\00:22:07.42 Lifestyle Club provides a way for sponsor 00:22:07.43\00:22:09.39 churches and health organizations to connect 00:22:09.40\00:22:12.00 with club members in their own communities. 00:22:12.01\00:22:14.72 If you'd like to learn more about how the NEWSTART 00:22:15.27\00:22:17.36 Lifestyle Club can make a 00:22:17.37\00:22:18.72 difference in your health outreach, call 00:22:18.73\00:22:20.84 and ask for your free copy of health evangelism made simple. 00:22:24.78\00:22:30.18 Welcome to NEWSTART AT HOME. 00:22:46.12\00:22:47.78 I'm Dr. David DeRose, your host, 00:22:48.12\00:22:50.09 and with me today, Jerry Florres 00:22:50.24\00:22:52.18 therapist with the NEWSTART Medical Clinic 00:22:52.42\00:22:55.24 here at Weimar Center of Health and Education. 00:22:55.48\00:22:58.15 Jerry, it's great to have you with us again today. 00:22:58.39\00:23:00.45 It's great to be here. 00:23:00.46\00:23:01.51 Jerry you are just doing exciting 00:23:01.52\00:23:03.12 things I know in the NEWSTART program 00:23:03.13\00:23:04.78 because I've got patients and they're telling me 00:23:05.06\00:23:07.15 the tremendous things that are happening to them 00:23:07.30\00:23:09.48 through you, God's blessing working through 00:23:09.63\00:23:11.66 you and the other members of the team there. 00:23:11.67\00:23:13.69 Ah, low back pain 00:23:14.21\00:23:16.12 is something that a lot of my patients have 00:23:16.33\00:23:18.81 and you guys there are doing something that's helping it. 00:23:19.18\00:23:21.72 Can you bring us up to speed? Most people 00:23:31.33\00:23:33.57 have bad postural habits, 00:23:33.78\00:23:35.42 they don't exercise enough, 00:23:35.63\00:23:37.45 and even people that walk a lot, they don't stretch. 00:23:38.00\00:23:41.24 So therefore what happens to our body is it tightens up. 00:23:41.69\00:23:44.72 And what happens when you get low back pain, 00:23:45.27\00:23:47.66 one of the things I notice most is 00:23:47.67\00:23:49.54 the psoas muscle, which is what 00:23:50.24\00:23:52.18 I'm going to demonstrate right now. 00:23:52.19\00:23:54.36 It is a muscle that is connected, 00:23:54.87\00:23:57.03 in case you didn't know, your legs 00:23:57.36\00:23:59.00 start right below your twelfth rib, 00:23:59.01\00:24:00.51 right around here. 00:24:00.84\00:24:01.87 And it comes and it hooks onto 00:24:02.39\00:24:05.06 joint of your leg, and it helps 00:24:05.24\00:24:07.06 your leg with moving it like this. 00:24:07.07\00:24:08.87 But when you sit down, they shorten 00:24:09.87\00:24:12.36 and tighten. 00:24:12.63\00:24:13.75 Then they take your pelvis 00:24:13.76\00:24:15.60 out of balance as they shorten, 00:24:15.87\00:24:17.60 and it takes the pelvis out of balance. 00:24:17.78\00:24:19.48 And what happens then 00:24:19.60\00:24:21.33 is ischemic tissue starts to develop, 00:24:21.54\00:24:24.00 and you all of a sudden get this pain that you can't bear. 00:24:24.30\00:24:28.21 You go to the doctor, and most 00:24:28.42\00:24:30.06 people don't know what to do with it. 00:24:30.07\00:24:32.00 So it's the process of the muscles tightening, 00:24:32.39\00:24:34.72 not being flexible enough that 00:24:34.73\00:24:36.33 often sets the stage for low back pain? 00:24:36.34\00:24:38.30 Yes, and what we do-- the key 00:24:38.48\00:24:40.75 to unlock these muscle spasms that 00:24:41.33\00:24:44.15 are happening in the lower back, is to 00:24:44.16\00:24:47.21 add heat, usually we do it through an epsom salt bath. 00:24:47.45\00:24:51.51 Ok. How do you make an epsom salt bath? 00:24:52.06\00:24:54.21 You take two cups of epsom salt, 00:24:54.30\00:24:56.36 which is available at most grocery stores or pharmacies, 00:24:56.37\00:24:59.81 and you take two cups into water that's about 100 to 104 degrees. 00:25:00.15\00:25:04.27 And you pour it in there and you just lie there and relax 00:25:05.03\00:25:08.57 for about 12-- up to 30 minutes. 00:25:09.12\00:25:11.57 Then what we do here 00:25:12.39\00:25:14.42 is we include the massage, 00:25:14.63\00:25:16.72 which gets all the 00:25:17.06\00:25:18.42 muscles nice and lengthened. 00:25:18.87\00:25:20.72 We get the 00:25:21.18\00:25:22.33 the circulation optimally going, flowing to the muscle, 00:25:22.78\00:25:26.03 and once that happens 00:25:26.48\00:25:27.72 you got this nice lengthened muscle, 00:25:28.18\00:25:30.00 all the range of motion, in most cases. 00:25:30.21\00:25:32.75 In some, it takes several therapies 00:25:33.09\00:25:35.36 And then the lower back pain dissipates once the pelvis 00:25:35.63\00:25:39.09 and all the rest of the muscles are nice and balanced. 00:25:39.42\00:25:41.63 So is it true Jerry 00:25:42.30\00:25:44.06 that a lot of the problems people have with their low 00:25:44.21\00:25:47.03 backs is because of 00:25:47.04\00:25:48.06 incorrect postures and movements? 00:25:48.07\00:25:49.72 As a matter of fact yes. As a matter of fact 00:25:50.78\00:25:52.84 most people go multiple times to the doctor, 00:25:52.85\00:25:54.84 and up to 95 percent of the time, even in MRIs 00:25:55.36\00:25:59.30 and in other studies, like CAT Scans, 00:25:59.54\00:26:02.15 they can't find anything. 00:26:02.16\00:26:03.78 Therefore we find out that it's 00:26:04.24\00:26:06.51 muscles in spasm that is causing that 00:26:06.52\00:26:09.21 terrible low back pain. 00:26:09.51\00:26:10.81 Ok, so try to keep more flexible, 00:26:11.18\00:26:12.72 drink more water, that's going to make a difference too? 00:26:12.73\00:26:15.36 Water again is the key. 00:26:15.54\00:26:17.36 You got to stay hydrated 00:26:17.51\00:26:19.03 because if the muscles don't have enough water, 00:26:19.21\00:26:22.21 that means that they don't have enough oxygen, that means that 00:26:22.66\00:26:26.12 it sends a signal to your brain to tighten up. 00:26:26.48\00:26:29.30 Ok, so you provide them with that. 00:26:30.00\00:26:31.66 And not to mention that 00:26:32.21\00:26:33.84 sitting a lot in the position we are in 00:26:34.06\00:26:36.87 shortens those muscles 00:26:37.18\00:26:38.51 therefore again taking the pelvis out of balance 00:26:38.78\00:26:43.06 therefore creating that tissue 00:26:43.39\00:26:45.48 that doesn't have that 00:26:45.69\00:26:47.66 optimum blood flow, therefore pain. 00:26:47.67\00:26:50.69 Is there a real quick stretch you could demonstrate for us? 00:26:51.12\00:26:53.57 We're almost out of time, but is there 00:26:53.58\00:26:55.21 some pointer that is often missed in low back problems? 00:26:55.57\00:26:58.84 I show people, I do this while they are lying down 00:26:59.09\00:27:02.69 and then I also teach them how to do it and it's very simple. 00:27:03.00\00:27:06.60 Most people use this stretch to stretch out their quadriceps 00:27:07.00\00:27:09.87 but what I do is I take it here 00:27:10.33\00:27:12.12 and I add a movement. 00:27:12.27\00:27:13.27 Remember I showed you that muscle that goes from 00:27:13.51\00:27:15.75 the bottom of your rib, 00:27:15.87\00:27:17.09 attached to your spine, your T 12, 00:27:17.69\00:27:20.00 and you bring it down and you just go like this. 00:27:20.18\00:27:23.27 And you repeat this about... 00:27:24.03\00:27:25.60 30 seconds, and you do about 3-4 sets, 00:27:26.24\00:27:29.57 and you do both sides of the body. 00:27:29.87\00:27:31.60 therefore your muscles relax, 00:27:31.78\00:27:34.18 pain is dissipated. 00:27:34.63\00:27:36.69 A lot of simple things you can do at home 00:27:36.84\00:27:39.00 to prevent or treat low back problems. 00:27:39.12\00:27:41.42 If you've got questions get a doctor's evaluation first. 00:27:41.63\00:27:44.30 If you want more information, simply go to: 00:27:44.51\00:27:46.81 Well friends that's it for today, 00:27:55.18\00:27:56.78 thank you for joining us! 00:27:56.79\00:27:58.06 Pick up the phone and give us a call at: 00:27:58.07\00:27:59.57 Have a great day and God bless! 00:28:03.45\00:28:05.72
