In our studio... 00:01:40.81\00:01:43.15 How are you Elton? -Good! 00:01:43.42\00:01:45.21 You look good. -Thank you You look better 00:01:45.30\00:01:47.24 and I got to ask you the first thing now, 00:01:47.51\00:01:50.45 Are you walking now? -Absolutely 00:01:50.72\00:01:53.66 Today I've walked about a half a mile, maybe more 00:01:54.18\00:01:58.03 I walked from the lodge here to the doctor's office downhill, 00:01:58.81\00:02:03.78 then turned around and walked back uphill. 00:02:04.09\00:02:06.45 So if you can do that you can make it through the airport! 00:02:07.21\00:02:09.63 If I can walk up and downhill, I can go through 00:02:09.66\00:02:12.33 a straight airport concourse without a problem. 00:02:12.34\00:02:13.84 Now let's remind the viewers that this is a guy 00:02:14.75\00:02:17.45 who came here in a wheelchair! 00:02:17.54\00:02:20.15 You had to be pushed around because you didn't 00:02:20.42\00:02:22.51 have the wherewithal to walk. -Absolutely 00:02:23.03\00:02:26.00 Tell us more now, How much weight have you lost? 00:02:26.39\00:02:28.48 Well I've lost conservatively 15 pounds 00:02:28.87\00:02:31.27 and my blood pressure is down, 00:02:32.21\00:02:36.09 my cholesterol is down, my blood sugar levels are down 00:02:36.42\00:02:40.54 all the good things, all the good indicators are positive 00:02:41.15\00:02:45.15 but the most spectacualr thing for me is 00:02:45.42\00:02:48.09 that my pulse rate went from 88 to 64 00:02:48.51\00:02:53.03 And you know, as we talked about just before filming this 00:02:53.84\00:02:58.42 this particular show, we know that 00:02:58.51\00:03:02.30 when you get to that weight you want to be 00:03:02.54\00:03:05.36 your pulse rate will drop into the 50's, 00:03:05.81\00:03:07.69 you'll have an athletic heart! -Yep 00:03:08.09\00:03:10.18 You've been blessed in that way, -Yeah I have been 00:03:10.30\00:03:13.39 Actually I've been blessed with a very powerful body 00:03:13.87\00:03:16.54 I just didn't take advantage of it 00:03:16.63\00:03:19.27 and I allowed my work, and computers, and writing 00:03:19.60\00:03:23.39 I'm a novelist 00:03:23.84\00:03:25.24 and I allowed that to get in the way of normal exercise 00:03:26.03\00:03:29.27 and bad eating habits and other things to get 00:03:29.48\00:03:32.87 in the way of a normal diet 00:03:33.18\00:03:36.09 and so with a proper diet, with a 00:03:36.42\00:03:39.39 low-fat, whole plant, vegetarian-based diet, 00:03:39.75\00:03:44.66 a "vegan" diet they call it, 00:03:45.03\00:03:47.09 I'll be a lot better of in terms of what I put in my body 00:03:47.72\00:03:50.33 and then the exercise I'll be a lot better of in terms of 00:03:50.69\00:03:53.51 how my body will feel. -Yes 00:03:53.75\00:03:55.75 and the interesting thing is that the inflamation 00:03:56.15\00:03:58.57 has gone way down. -Way down 00:03:59.09\00:04:01.18 Way down. -And how do you attribute that? 00:04:01.54\00:04:03.81 According to the research I've been provided with here 00:04:04.39\00:04:07.81 and the research that I've read on my own 00:04:08.12\00:04:10.24 when you eat this type of low fat based diet, 00:04:10.66\00:04:16.36 that's whole plant, 00:04:16.84\00:04:19.06 you have something in your body called prostaglandins 00:04:19.30\00:04:22.09 and the protaglandins do two main things 00:04:22.27\00:04:24.54 they reduce inflamation, and increase the blood flow capacity 00:04:24.84\00:04:29.18 to your arteries. -Yes 00:04:29.27\00:04:30.87 If you're a diabetic and suffer from peripheral neuropathy 00:04:31.24\00:04:34.81 this is the diet for you, this is 00:04:35.12\00:04:37.75 the exercise program for you. -Absolutely 00:04:37.84\00:04:40.21 And I can tell by what your answer was 00:04:40.57\00:04:43.30 that you've been talking to Dr. Lukens. 00:04:43.39\00:04:45.84 Absolutely! 00:04:46.03\00:04:47.63 He's always telling me about these prostaglandins 00:04:48.18\00:04:51.06 how they make the veins and the arteries more elastic 00:04:51.39\00:04:55.33 and they decrease the inflamation! 00:04:55.45\00:04:58.21 And as we know, and some of the heart patients 00:04:58.42\00:05:01.15 know about inflamation, 00:05:01.16\00:05:02.78 because this is what has hurt our hearts and our arteries. 00:05:03.00\00:05:07.30 And I can see it in peripheral skin tone 00:05:07.69\00:05:11.78 where you have people that have bad circulation 00:05:12.45\00:05:17.42 have trouble, and I can see already differences in that. 00:05:17.78\00:05:22.72 And that's due to the prostaglandins -Yes 00:05:22.75\00:05:24.27 and then of course there's the exercise which 00:05:25.00\00:05:27.36 everybody should do after every meal. 00:05:27.60\00:05:29.72 Everybody should exercise, and the reason why is 00:05:30.06\00:05:32.27 that it opens up the gates in your body 00:05:32.57\00:05:35.09 so that insulin flows more normaly, 00:05:35.15\00:05:37.30 it allows the growth of HDL's, 00:05:37.45\00:05:41.12 high density lipoproteins, 00:05:41.36\00:05:43.09 and that enables cardio rehab, it enables them to move 00:05:43.39\00:05:47.36 the placque out of the arteries in a normal fashon, 00:05:47.45\00:05:50.75 and that's what's important, because 00:05:51.30\00:05:53.33 anybody can give you a drug with an artificial reaction, 00:05:53.45\00:05:56.57 but this is real, this is what you do, 00:05:56.63\00:05:59.72 this is the food that you eat, 00:05:59.78\00:06:02.18 this is the exercising that you do 00:06:02.42\00:06:05.12 and that has a natural response to your body. 00:06:05.24\00:06:08.03 That always has to be better than artificial. 00:06:08.09\00:06:10.27 Something to get an amen, that's wonderful 00:06:11.00\00:06:13.60 Well said! Have you ever thought about coming to work here? 00:06:14.09\00:06:18.30 Maybe you could do something! -I would, 00:06:18.42\00:06:21.09 All kidding aside, you are a remarkable guy 00:06:21.24\00:06:24.42 you've got that brain that God has given you, 00:06:24.51\00:06:27.63 you've been gifted with this clear thinking 00:06:28.06\00:06:30.39 being able to dissect and really get to the bottom of things 00:06:30.78\00:06:35.09 and I like that that's coming out in this interview 00:06:35.12\00:06:37.30 because there are many people that need to hear this 00:06:37.63\00:06:40.69 from lay people, not just our doctors. 00:06:40.75\00:06:43.48 And by the way, Dr.Lukens will be here in a bit, 00:06:43.72\00:06:46.21 we'll be discussing the changes you've now gone through. 00:06:46.30\00:06:50.78 It is, if I could say anything to the people out there, 00:06:51.27\00:06:55.39 If I could say anything to you 00:06:55.40\00:06:57.39 If you're concerned about your weight, 00:06:57.72\00:06:59.51 if you're concerned about your health 00:06:59.75\00:07:01.84 If there is any possible way that you can get 00:07:02.39\00:07:05.87 to Weimar, you should come. 00:07:06.33\00:07:08.24 Because I'm a living testament 00:07:08.78\00:07:11.54 to the ability to literally get out of a wheelchair and walk. 00:07:11.69\00:07:15.75 And if I can do it in three weeks, 00:07:16.18\00:07:18.63 and I don't have the best work ethic in the world, 00:07:19.00\00:07:22.09 So if you've got a good work ethic, if you realy like 00:07:22.51\00:07:25.87 to get out there, if you really like to push yourself, 00:07:26.27\00:07:28.66 you could easily do as well as I have. 00:07:29.06\00:07:31.63 Amen! So what about the, 00:07:31.72\00:07:33.81 I cut you off, I'm sorry -That's alright, go ahead 00:07:34.45\00:07:37.00 What about the food? Have you adjusted to this vegan, 00:07:37.15\00:07:40.81 plant-based diet? -Well, and here's 00:07:41.15\00:07:43.00 where I have the advantage over most people 00:07:43.09\00:07:45.12 I've been a vegetarian all my life, 00:07:45.13\00:07:47.30 I've been, however, a special type of vegetarian 00:07:47.33\00:07:50.27 I haven't just been an ovo-lacto vegetarian 00:07:50.48\00:07:52.72 I've been a junk food vegetarian! 00:07:53.06\00:07:55.51 Ok! 00:07:55.87\00:07:56.87 -The truth coms out! -The truth comes out, 00:07:57.48\00:07:59.48 As they like to say, 'Aint no meat in potato chips, 00:07:59.60\00:08:03.72 'Aint no meat in French fries, unless you get MacDonalds' 00:08:04.33\00:08:09.15 'Aint no meat in maple bars... 00:08:09.81\00:08:12.33 So you go along with enough of that 00:08:13.03\00:08:17.00 and it puts on weight, if you don't eat at the right times... 00:08:17.27\00:08:20.09 You see I've developed a theory while I've been here, 00:08:20.36\00:08:24.60 and that is that humans are like bears. 00:08:24.84\00:08:28.24 Bears hibernate for a certain percentage of the year 00:08:28.51\00:08:31.15 humans hibernate for a certain percentage of the day, 00:08:31.33\00:08:34.00 when we get up in the morning our metabolism is the best 00:08:34.12\00:08:37.00 and then it goes downhill through the rest of the day. 00:08:37.09\00:08:39.39 and therefore what our body does towerd the end of the day 00:08:39.63\00:08:42.36 is it says, I'm going back to hibernate and I'm going 00:08:42.54\00:08:45.06 to need that food for fat. So you should eat in the morning 00:08:45.12\00:08:49.24 and eat at noon, if you eat past two 'o clock 00:08:49.51\00:08:51.72 the chance of all of that food going to fat, or 00:08:51.87\00:08:55.18 a good percentage of it, is increased because your 00:08:55.24\00:08:57.06 body's ready to go back into hibernation. 00:08:57.30\00:08:59.75 This is my theory, -Your theory 00:09:00.03\00:09:01.72 This is nobody else's theory, this is my theory! 00:09:01.84\00:09:04.51 -That's Ok, you can share your theory...you just did! 00:09:04.66\00:09:07.78 I did, I'm not shy about it! -That's good, 00:09:07.84\00:09:11.63 I'm glad you're not shy. -You know because I really think 00:09:11.78\00:09:14.39 there's something to that, because if we start 00:09:14.51\00:09:17.03 thinking of ourselves as hibernating creatures 00:09:17.15\00:09:19.27 then we'll realize we need to eat and do a lot of things 00:09:19.72\00:09:23.63 early, so that later when our metabolism begins to slow down 00:09:24.24\00:09:28.09 we don't load ourselves up with a bunch of food and end up 00:09:28.36\00:09:31.24 literally gaining weight while we're asleep. 00:09:31.60\00:09:33.84 Very good. Now what about prayer? 00:09:34.63\00:09:37.33 Do we need to pray? -I think we ned to pray 00:09:37.54\00:09:40.51 I think it is awfully important beacuse 00:09:40.81\00:09:43.87 it's not only the body that's being taken care of here, 00:09:44.15\00:09:47.30 it's not only the mind that's being taken care of here, 00:09:47.45\00:09:50.03 It's the spirit, I can feel the spirit, the Holy Spirit here 00:09:50.18\00:09:54.54 I can feel the spirit of Christ, I can feel the spirit of God 00:09:54.78\00:09:57.78 This is a powerful place, this place does a powerful work 00:09:58.48\00:10:02.78 and we need to understand that healing is not just a physical 00:10:03.57\00:10:08.72 thing, it's a mental, an emotional, it's a spiritual 00:10:08.75\00:10:12.48 journey, and none of us are perfect, 00:10:12.84\00:10:17.36 We've all fallen short of the glory of the Lord, 00:10:17.54\00:10:20.39 we've all fallen short of our own expectations. 00:10:20.45\00:10:23.21 So this is a journey that we're on, it's not a moment 00:10:23.69\00:10:27.12 I want to thank you for coming on our set, 00:10:27.63\00:10:29.87 We've run out of time, thank you very much 00:10:30.00\00:10:32.21 God be with you, -Thank you 00:10:32.36\00:10:34.21 Friends, don't go away we have an important tip for you 00:10:34.42\00:10:37.06 right now. 00:10:37.07\00:10:39.06 Well, You've done very well. 00:10:40.03\00:10:42.60 Do you have diebetes, heart disease, high blood pressure 00:10:47.51\00:10:51.36 or do you weigh too much? 00:10:51.63\00:10:53.42 Hi, my name is Dr. Ing, and I'd like to tell you 00:10:53.78\00:10:56.54 about our 18-day newstart lifestyle program. 00:10:56.75\00:11:00.12 It includes a comprehensive medical evaluation 00:11:00.21\00:11:03.39 with labratory studies and a exercise stress test, 00:11:03.66\00:11:06.51 physician consultation, culinary school 00:11:06.75\00:11:10.69 and an oportunity to walk on beautiful trails 00:11:11.18\00:11:14.12 in the foothills of the Sierras. 00:11:14.48\00:11:17.57 Your health is one of the most important things 00:11:17.87\00:11:20.06 that you have, don't wait! 00:11:20.30\00:11:22.30 Welcome back, friends, and in our studio... 00:11:45.54\00:11:47.78 Dr. Lukens! My good friend, how are you? 00:11:48.51\00:11:51.42 -Good to be back. What a grip! 00:11:52.03\00:11:54.54 Well, I want to get right into this and talk about 00:11:54.66\00:11:58.15 this gentleman, you know he has a lot of weight issues 00:11:58.18\00:12:02.15 but how are we going to deal with this, what do 00:12:02.87\00:12:05.51 we need to do with him that's different 00:12:05.72\00:12:07.84 than anyone else here. 00:12:08.33\00:12:10.12 Well as you can tell from some of the things he was telling you 00:12:10.51\00:12:14.63 he's a very interesting individual, 00:12:15.33\00:12:17.60 Yes, he's telling us about the bears in the woods. 00:12:18.30\00:12:21.30 and intellegent, he knows a lot of people 00:12:22.45\00:12:26.15 I was really surprised at some of the people he knows 00:12:26.24\00:12:29.69 He's not a name dropper, he knows these people, 00:12:29.87\00:12:32.72 some in pretty high places 00:12:33.39\00:12:36.69 he's intellegent and he's had a lot of experience 00:12:37.18\00:12:41.78 in a lot of technical things, in a lot of media type things. 00:12:42.15\00:12:45.66 Also he's an author, he was telling us 00:12:46.27\00:12:51.30 But his mind is constantly active. 00:12:51.60\00:12:54.60 And when it comes to the weight, he is morbidly obese 00:12:55.27\00:13:00.69 and a person could tell that he was overweight, 00:13:01.51\00:13:04.78 but when the body mass index is above 40 00:13:05.45\00:13:08.57 and his is well above that, then that's morbid obesity. 00:13:09.42\00:13:13.30 And so that's a big thing. 00:13:13.72\00:13:15.78 Now the thing is with him is that when he came in here 00:13:16.36\00:13:21.06 he was really a diabetic, -He did'nt know that, or did he? 00:13:21.24\00:13:25.09 Well, he did'nt know about it, but when i told him about it 00:13:25.27\00:13:29.00 with the obesity and rheumatoid arthritius and all this 00:13:29.30\00:13:32.24 kind of stuff, I don't think he wanted to deal with it. 00:13:32.39\00:13:35.42 There is a test that we can take, it's called the 00:13:36.27\00:13:38.51 Hemoglobin A1C, and that gives you an average 00:13:38.63\00:13:42.48 blood sugar for the last three months. It's a wonderful test 00:13:43.24\00:13:49.12 I'm really glad we have it. 00:13:49.21\00:13:50.81 He did'nt want that done, so we didn't do it, 00:13:51.09\00:13:53.18 so I asked him to get his finger stuck and 00:13:53.60\00:13:55.84 he got that done and it... 00:13:56.33\00:13:59.57 he was probably borderline, but 00:13:59.84\00:14:01.87 when you're fasting and your blood sugar is over 140 00:14:02.21\00:14:05.15 that's diabetes in any book. -Yes 00:14:05.21\00:14:08.21 And now his is down to really close to normal fasting. 00:14:08.30\00:14:12.36 This soon! -O yeah, 00:14:13.30\00:14:15.84 Wow! -But I mean, he was sedentary 00:14:16.00\00:14:19.18 which he's not now. That was the exciting part for him 00:14:19.45\00:14:23.78 and then he has changed his diet, 00:14:24.24\00:14:28.66 Now when people say vegetarian, they don't mean 00:14:29.66\00:14:33.06 vegan. -Right, -And we have to watch that, you know, 00:14:33.09\00:14:36.03 and some authorities in this field say that 00:14:36.51\00:14:39.30 when you're drinking milk and eating the food we have 00:14:39.63\00:14:46.39 that have animal products in them, even if their not 00:14:46.51\00:14:50.00 flesh foods they still have those animal fats and 00:14:50.12\00:14:55.51 animal cholesterols and stuff, and those are 00:14:55.72\00:14:57.87 the things that are really important. 00:14:58.15\00:15:00.57 So now we've got a guy here who's way overweight, 00:15:00.66\00:15:03.84 what do you think that's doing to his joints? 00:15:04.66\00:15:07.81 -Oh it's putting a lot of pressure on there... 00:15:08.18\00:15:10.45 But you know I wanted to stop you for a moment and 00:15:10.57\00:15:12.60 let you know this, that you'd have been really proud 00:15:12.66\00:15:15.12 because all of a sudden he gave us a dissertation 00:15:15.84\00:15:19.09 on prostaglandins! -Yeah I heard that, 00:15:19.18\00:15:22.12 you were talking about the veins and the arteries and 00:15:22.51\00:15:26.24 different things! Just parenthetically what that does 00:15:26.27\00:15:31.72 is only in the arteries. It dilates them up 00:15:32.21\00:15:35.81 it dosen't really make them more elastic because they 00:15:36.33\00:15:38.63 can go right back down again. -Really? 00:15:38.72\00:15:41.27 and they have to be able to do that because 00:15:41.42\00:15:43.45 if your arteries couldn't respond within a 00:15:43.60\00:15:46.78 split second, you couldn't get out of that chair. 00:15:47.15\00:15:49.72 So when you decide to get up, your heart beats faster 00:15:50.48\00:15:54.09 and there's a little bit of adrenalin that comes out. 00:15:54.33\00:15:56.27 it's really complicated, we are fearfully and wonderfully 00:15:56.54\00:15:59.81 made, and the blood goes into the right areas 00:16:00.15\00:16:03.33 when that happens, but when you eat meat milk and eggs 00:16:03.57\00:16:07.42 and flesh foods especially, 00:16:07.69\00:16:10.27 they're always tending to be constricted 00:16:10.48\00:16:13.18 so that oxygenated bood that needs to go out with 00:16:13.48\00:16:17.27 just a tiny bit of dilation to go into those areas 00:16:17.30\00:16:20.81 it just really never happens. 00:16:21.09\00:16:23.24 We had patients this time that were post stroke, 00:16:23.48\00:16:26.84 and other things and you could see them 00:16:27.00\00:16:28.87 getting better already. -Yes 00:16:29.00\00:16:31.21 The prostaglandins, you know that's one of my favorite things 00:16:31.75\00:16:35.60 the last time I looked there was three and three-quarter 00:16:35.81\00:16:38.45 million hits on that, and that was a couple years ago. 00:16:38.60\00:16:42.57 Now I looked at it within the past two months 00:16:42.63\00:16:45.30 and there's 22,800,000 hits on prostaglandins, 00:16:45.54\00:16:50.30 So somebody is looking at it, 00:16:50.51\00:16:51.87 somebody's talking about it -Millions! 00:16:52.57\00:16:55.15 That's the reason why, for him, 00:16:55.75\00:16:58.39 that he has rheumatoid arthritus 00:16:58.51\00:17:01.00 and there's probably a component of austio arthritus 00:17:01.21\00:17:04.36 when the bone edge has been grinding against others, 00:17:04.39\00:17:07.54 But the rheumatoid arthritus is a type where the 00:17:07.63\00:17:11.09 joints and the linings of the bones and inside the joints 00:17:11.33\00:17:17.06 are actually eating at each other. 00:17:17.36\00:17:19.42 That's where your body attacts itself. 00:17:19.81\00:17:23.69 When you go on a plant based diet 00:17:23.84\00:17:26.27 the body dosn't so that as much. 00:17:26.66\00:17:29.54 and we've seen young people with juvenile arthritus 00:17:31.03\00:17:34.75 and it's just like a miracle, it is a miracle of 00:17:35.42\00:17:38.75 God's healing, but it goes really fast for younger people. 00:17:39.03\00:17:42.75 Now I see promise with him, 00:17:43.66\00:17:46.75 in that I think he is going to go back home 00:17:46.84\00:17:50.33 and continue this program... 00:17:50.60\00:17:52.33 and I asked if he would be willing to come back down 00:17:52.63\00:17:55.72 and visit us in a few months and he said he would. 00:17:55.84\00:17:59.24 That's a real big thing, and it would be really great 00:17:59.63\00:18:04.09 for all our patients, especially those who are overweight 00:18:04.36\00:18:07.72 because they have that desire while their here 00:18:08.78\00:18:13.66 I'm going to go home, I'm going to do it all 00:18:13.78\00:18:16.21 I'm going to conquer the world, and do all the things I couldn't 00:18:16.24\00:18:19.12 but if they get too many things in their plate 00:18:19.30\00:18:20.87 that they want to change all at once, and they don't 00:18:21.15\00:18:23.66 keep track of the things they really need to do 00:18:23.72\00:18:27.33 in the right order, they're going to end up just... 00:18:27.42\00:18:31.57 it only takes a few days, or a few months of discouragement 00:18:31.84\00:18:36.36 and then your brain says, well it wasn't really my fault 00:18:36.75\00:18:40.30 this happened and that happened... 00:18:40.57\00:18:42.39 You know, we've been working here for many years 00:18:42.54\00:18:45.54 and we know the things that mess up their program. 00:18:45.78\00:18:48.66 There's probably viewers that don't know anything 00:18:50.48\00:18:55.57 about prostaglandins and the benifits of these, 00:18:55.66\00:18:59.66 Where do we find them? 00:18:59.78\00:19:01.84 Well, the body makes them. 00:19:02.36\00:19:03.87 -The body does? -Yes 00:19:04.21\00:19:06.48 The ones that come from plants 00:19:07.12\00:19:09.36 are 18-Carbon fatty acids. 00:19:09.57\00:19:11.87 And the ones that come from meat, milk eggs and fish 00:19:12.24\00:19:14.78 are 20-Carbon fatty acids. 00:19:15.00\00:19:17.24 That's such a long fatty acid chain that you think, what could 00:19:17.39\00:19:21.18 two carbon extras on a fatty acid make any 00:19:21.48\00:19:25.69 difference among friends? But it's a huge difference. 00:19:25.81\00:19:29.84 It's not just that, it makes the platelets not as sticky 00:19:30.00\00:19:34.12 that's causes the clots; we can talk about that another patient 00:19:34.30\00:19:39.27 and then there's also the leucotrienes 00:19:39.30\00:19:42.57 and that's how the body communicates with itself. 00:19:42.75\00:19:46.33 We know so much more about it since they've 00:19:46.36\00:19:48.33 spent so much time recently on cancer and AIDS 00:19:48.36\00:19:51.78 In the past 20 or 30 years, volumes have been 00:19:52.09\00:19:56.09 discovered on how the immune system works. 00:19:56.27\00:19:59.18 But if the message units between the cells are not clear, 00:19:59.27\00:20:04.09 then they get confused and the body starts to attack itself. 00:20:04.39\00:20:08.78 And that's what's happening in rehumathoid arthritus. 00:20:08.84\00:20:13.00 -Now what about his lab work, 00:20:13.78\00:20:15.60 I know we do two blood draws, one when they arrive 00:20:15.81\00:20:18.84 and one just before they leave. Has he had any improvements? 00:20:19.27\00:20:23.09 Yeah he has. It's not as good as some do but 00:20:23.42\00:20:27.48 that wasn't his problem, his numbers weren't way out. 00:20:27.57\00:20:31.51 But he was really happy. 00:20:31.66\00:20:33.69 He was just like a kid who had, excuse the expression, 00:20:34.45\00:20:37.36 just come out of a candy store! 00:20:37.42\00:20:39.18 I told him, take your time and walk slowly up the hill 00:20:39.45\00:20:44.21 where you're going to have your interview 00:20:44.33\00:20:46.21 So I did something and turned around and went out 00:20:46.36\00:20:48.87 and I expected him to be making his way up past the parking lot 00:20:49.27\00:20:53.00 but he was already at the top of the hill, and I shouted up, 00:20:53.12\00:20:55.78 "You're going too fast!" 00:20:55.84\00:20:58.75 Now for a guy who came here in a wheelchair, he's doing good! 00:20:59.87\00:21:04.00 Physically he could do it, but I mean, just think. 00:21:04.45\00:21:07.69 if every time you moved a joint, you get a stabbing pain. 00:21:07.78\00:21:13.03 -Ow, that hurt! 00:21:13.48\00:21:15.81 You don't want to move. 00:21:16.36\00:21:18.06 Doc, thanks for joining us today! 00:21:18.30\00:21:20.54 It's always a pleasure -Yep 00:21:20.81\00:21:22.57 Friends, thank you, but don't go away, we have a tip for you! 00:21:22.60\00:21:25.42 Hello, I'm Dr. David DeRose. 00:21:26.36\00:21:28.54 Helping a friend, neighbor or relative have better health is 00:21:28.87\00:21:32.42 one of the most practical forms of health ministry available 00:21:32.48\00:21:36.03 However, if you're not a health professional 00:21:36.30\00:21:38.18 it can be extremely difficult to know how to help someone 00:21:38.33\00:21:41.15 access reliable, credible, up-to-date health information. 00:21:41.27\00:21:44.84 That's why I recommend NEWSTART Lifestyle Club. 00:21:45.21\00:21:48.81 The club is based on the world-famous newstart principles 00:21:48.82\00:21:52.09 which have helped millions be well naturally without drugs. 00:21:52.21\00:21:55.72 The club offers streaming video, expert health advice, 00:21:55.87\00:21:59.00 wellness tips, tools and more! 00:21:59.09\00:22:01.15 And when it comes to ministry, NEWSTART club provides 00:22:01.24\00:22:04.84 for sponser churches and health organizatons 00:22:05.06\00:22:07.69 to connect with club members in their own communities. 00:22:07.72\00:22:11.03 If you'd like to learn how NEWSTART Lifestyle Club 00:22:11.39\00:22:14.60 can make a difference in your health outreach, call: 00:22:14.66\00:22:17.24 Ask for your free copy of Health Evangelism Made Simple 00:22:23.36\00:22:27.12 Hello and welcome to NEWSTART at Home 00:22:42.63\00:22:44.30 we're glad that you're with us, and we're glad today also 00:22:44.31\00:22:47.45 that in the studio we have Dr. Doug Plata. 00:22:47.60\00:22:49.69 Welcome to the program. 00:22:49.75\00:22:50.81 -Thank you 00:22:50.82\00:22:51.87 -You were a physician that's trained in family practice 00:22:51.88\00:22:54.48 and also preventive medicine 00:22:54.49\00:22:56.18 So in other words it's better to prevent than to 00:22:56.19\00:22:58.84 -than to treat preferably, sure. 00:22:59.72\00:23:01.36 -But in terms of day to day work 00:23:02.00\00:23:05.06 what kind of work do you do? 00:23:05.12\00:23:06.57 I work in an urgent care setting 00:23:07.00\00:23:09.15 so basically anything that walks off the street 00:23:09.16\00:23:11.21 I go ahead and treat. 00:23:11.30\00:23:12.66 And also occupational medicine. 00:23:12.81\00:23:14.36 -Ok great. So speaking of urgent care, 00:23:14.48\00:23:17.03 what's one of the main things 00:23:18.06\00:23:19.36 that happens when people come in? 00:23:19.37\00:23:20.78 What are one of the main things? 00:23:21.24\00:23:23.00 -Well, there's a lot of different things. 00:23:23.24\00:23:25.30 There's a lot of upper respiratory infections, 00:23:26.12\00:23:28.42 perhaps injuries... just a whole host. 00:23:28.54\00:23:31.12 You've worked in an ER 00:23:31.21\00:23:32.30 so you know good an well what sort of things come in. 00:23:32.42\00:23:34.12 -What about foreign bodies in the eyes? 00:23:34.21\00:23:36.18 -Yes, that's the topic isn't it. 00:23:36.21\00:23:38.75 Foreign bodies meaning 00:23:39.81\00:23:41.39 they're not supposed to be there, they're foreign. 00:23:41.51\00:23:43.03 -Yes, exactly. 00:23:43.06\00:23:44.24 Things that are foreign to our body 00:23:44.42\00:23:45.87 getting into eyes, ears, different places like that. 00:23:46.21\00:23:48.87 -So let's click off some of those, 00:23:49.09\00:23:50.27 let's say, most common may be dust. 00:23:50.28\00:23:52.48 -Absolutely. 00:23:53.15\00:23:54.36 By far and away the most common is people get something 00:23:54.57\00:23:56.75 in their eye, it's really small. 00:23:56.81\00:23:58.27 They have, perhaps, no idea really what it is. 00:23:58.57\00:24:01.63 But it's really small dust, I mean it could be any sorts of 00:24:01.69\00:24:04.54 Particles. -Wood chips, anything like that 00:24:04.72\00:24:08.24 -From animals... just dirt is the most common. 00:24:08.33\00:24:12.24 -So, what do you do? 00:24:12.42\00:24:13.72 What do you do initially, 00:24:14.06\00:24:15.42 let's say you're at home, you really don't want to go see you 00:24:15.48\00:24:18.24 or go to the urgent care. 00:24:18.33\00:24:19.36 Not because they don't like you, but you know... 00:24:19.66\00:24:21.60 What should they do? 00:24:22.42\00:24:23.81 -Well by far and away 00:24:24.15\00:24:26.27 the most important thing to do is for people 00:24:26.33\00:24:28.21 to go ahead and try to wash it out themselves. 00:24:28.27\00:24:30.33 Now, immediately the eye starts tearing, 00:24:31.09\00:24:32.72 so God has placed within us mechanisms to try to 00:24:32.78\00:24:35.09 get out those foreign bodies. 00:24:35.15\00:24:36.60 But... 00:24:36.84\00:24:38.21 for the most part that works. 00:24:38.36\00:24:40.12 But often it doesn't work, 00:24:40.27\00:24:42.63 so really irrigating, taking water, 00:24:42.66\00:24:45.66 a glass of water, of if you have a hose 00:24:45.84\00:24:48.48 spray it into your eyes. 00:24:49.24\00:24:50.72 -You don't have to worry about 00:24:50.78\00:24:52.36 damaging your eye with that at all... 00:24:52.51\00:24:54.51 -No, water is soft, what can I say. 00:24:54.69\00:24:56.78 -So you irrigate it. Anything else you could do, 00:24:57.66\00:25:00.33 like do you have any techniques in terms of getting stuff out? 00:25:00.51\00:25:03.39 -Sure, but before we get to that let me just say that... 00:25:03.48\00:25:06.24 How long should you irrigate it for? 00:25:06.57\00:25:09.09 Basically, 00:25:09.18\00:25:11.27 as long as you can 00:25:11.66\00:25:13.03 especially if it's some sort of substance 00:25:13.12\00:25:15.24 some sort of cleaning fluid or whatnot. 00:25:15.27\00:25:17.30 You really should be looking out... 00:25:17.51\00:25:19.09 I love it when people come in and 00:25:19.42\00:25:21.03 say they did it for 15 or 30 minutes 00:25:21.06\00:25:23.00 to me that's far more 00:25:23.30\00:25:24.33 important than getting to a doctor 00:25:24.39\00:25:26.12 first go ahead and do what you can 00:25:26.21\00:25:27.63 and try to just wash it out. 00:25:27.66\00:25:28.81 -Ok so, 15, 30 minutes 00:25:29.06\00:25:31.63 and especially if it's an acid or something 00:25:32.09\00:25:34.06 -Yeah. 00:25:34.18\00:25:35.48 -So we've talked about dust in the eye, 00:25:35.87\00:25:37.51 wood chips in the eye... what if somebody just 00:25:37.54\00:25:39.30 Maybe we should talk about metal, 00:25:40.72\00:25:42.15 what if it's like a piece of metal? 00:25:42.21\00:25:43.54 Well before we get to metal, let me talk about the technique, 00:25:43.81\00:25:46.30 One thing you can do often times, 00:25:47.42\00:25:49.72 people feel that when they blink, 00:25:50.03\00:25:52.33 it's like "Ouch, ouch" every time they blink. 00:25:52.48\00:25:55.24 And often times what it is is there's a foreign body 00:25:55.45\00:25:59.48 on the inside of the upper eyelid, 00:25:59.51\00:26:01.57 and as they blink they're going right across the cornea 00:26:01.81\00:26:04.45 and causing an abrasion, a scratch on the surface 00:26:04.46\00:26:06.72 And one of the things you can do is 00:26:07.18\00:26:09.36 to grab the eyelashes of the upper lid, pull it out 00:26:09.45\00:26:12.87 and pull it down over the lower eyelid 00:26:13.15\00:26:15.48 and then lifting up like that 00:26:15.54\00:26:17.15 and sometimes it will come off down here 00:26:17.30\00:26:19.45 and you just wipe it off like that. 00:26:19.51\00:26:20.72 So that's sort of a technique if the 00:26:21.00\00:26:22.66 watchers could remember that. 00:26:23.09\00:26:25.30 -Ok so you try that, and let's say it didn't work. 00:26:25.75\00:26:28.45 -Then you might want to come to me. 00:26:28.84\00:26:30.78 Although I'd go ahead and try it several times. 00:26:31.57\00:26:33.60 -Now what are you going to do that we can't do at the house? 00:26:33.72\00:26:35.78 Well, several things actually, 00:26:36.09\00:26:37.57 we have a number of different things, 00:26:37.58\00:26:40.63 we have slit lamp in the office, 00:26:40.69\00:26:42.75 and that's just a really excellent microscope 00:26:42.84\00:26:45.30 that we can see very close in and be able to see it. 00:26:45.39\00:26:48.51 We can also use what's called fluorescein 00:26:48.75\00:26:50.84 it's basically like highlighter fluid 00:26:51.03\00:26:52.66 that we drop in the eye, 00:26:52.81\00:26:54.39 and it tends to pool in areas where there are scratches 00:26:54.48\00:26:57.03 and makes things just stand out. 00:26:57.06\00:26:58.42 We use an ultraviolet lamp to just light it up. 00:26:58.63\00:27:02.03 -And then have... they used to use something called Alcaine 00:27:02.12\00:27:05.66 or something that they put on there, I'm not sure what it is. 00:27:05.75\00:27:08.00 -Yeah, just a couple of numbing drops in 00:27:08.06\00:27:10.21 boy people love it, but it's just a temporary thing. 00:27:10.27\00:27:12.42 Well the pain actually is your friend 00:27:12.48\00:27:14.36 cause it helps you know there's a problem. 00:27:14.45\00:27:15.60 -Right. 00:27:15.69\00:27:16.75 Ok well we're going to come back 00:27:17.09\00:27:18.18 and talk a little bit more about another aspect of 00:27:18.24\00:27:20.63 foreign bodies in the eye. 00:27:20.66\00:27:21.66 We've been talking to Dr. Doug Plata, 00:27:21.72\00:27:23.69 he's an urgent care physician 00:27:23.81\00:27:26.18 and we've talked about what to do with your eye 00:27:26.36\00:27:28.42 You know these programs are very helpful and useful 00:27:28.45\00:27:31.30 and if you want more information about this or other 00:27:31.36\00:27:33.60 like issues you might be dealing with, 00:27:34.03\00:27:36.57 you can go to: 00:27:36.75\00:27:37.84 We hope you take advantage of that resource 00:27:41.33\00:27:43.06 we're glad you've been with us, 00:27:43.09\00:27:44.09 and thank you doctor for being with us. 00:27:44.12\00:27:45.39 -My pleasure. 00:27:45.40\00:27:46.57 Well friends, that's it for today. 00:27:53.09\00:27:54.78 Pick up the phone and give us a call at: 00:27:54.87\00:27:57.24 May the Lord bless you. 00:28:04.57\00:28:06.18
