Thirteen years. 00:11:56.78\00:11:59.04 I've been here 13 years, 00:11:59.05\00:12:00.21 I haven't been Medical Director the whole time. 00:12:00.22\00:12:02.08 But you've been here for 13 years. 00:12:02.09\00:12:04.90 Doctor, I want to talk to you about Sharon right now. 00:12:04.91\00:12:08.62 And how she's done? 00:12:08.63\00:12:10.13 I understand that she has no more chest pains. 00:12:10.14\00:12:14.07 Tell us a little bit about this heart situation. 00:12:14.08\00:12:17.22 Well, Sharon had some chest pain. 00:12:17.23\00:12:21.18 And this was her problem 00:12:21.19\00:12:23.11 when she went to see her physicians in her home area. 00:12:23.12\00:12:27.11 And because of this, with all of her various activities 00:12:27.12\00:12:31.37 she notices that she was caring for her horses. 00:12:31.38\00:12:34.41 She will get tired, she had chest pains, 00:12:34.42\00:12:36.64 so she went to see the doctors and they said, 00:12:36.65\00:12:39.06 well we need to evaluate you 00:12:39.07\00:12:42.17 One thing led to another. 00:12:42.18\00:12:43.69 So she ended up having an angiogram 00:12:43.70\00:12:46.02 and having a stent placed, 00:12:46.03\00:12:48.93 and then within another few weeks she had to go back 00:12:48.94\00:12:53.60 because she has some more chest pain 00:12:53.61\00:12:55.06 and so they had to do another stent. 00:12:55.07\00:12:58.29 The good thing is that she had not had a heart attack 00:12:58.30\00:13:01.06 so there is no damage to the heart. 00:13:01.07\00:13:02.95 Oh, praise God. 00:13:02.96\00:13:03.95 But she had some nerving of her arteries, 00:13:03.96\00:13:07.11 which they manage at that time with a stent. 00:13:07.12\00:13:10.69 And she didn't really realize that 00:13:10.70\00:13:13.60 she know there were other options and things. 00:13:13.61\00:13:16.67 And I'm not sure if she told you her story, 00:13:16.68\00:13:19.32 but I guess that we're going to some sort of health fair. 00:13:19.33\00:13:22.31 In the area where they lived in Virginia 00:13:22.32\00:13:24.32 and there was an Adventist Church area, 00:13:24.33\00:13:27.13 we had a booth and she talked to the people there. 00:13:27.14\00:13:29.67 And they talked to her 00:13:29.68\00:13:31.34 and she found out about NEWSTART 00:13:31.35\00:13:33.31 and she inquired about NEWSTART 00:13:33.32\00:13:35.68 and so she decided she want to come to NEWSTART 00:13:35.69\00:13:38.35 and she came. But not only did she come to NEWSTART, 00:13:38.36\00:13:43.19 but she talked with her momma, 00:13:43.20\00:13:46.54 her mother, she persuaded her mother to come as well. 00:13:46.55\00:13:51.95 Now I've heard and I'll let the cat out 00:13:51.96\00:13:55.23 of the bag a little bit, you're gonna tell us about 00:13:55.24\00:13:57.83 the benefits that the mother received just being here 00:13:57.84\00:14:00.92 as a companion supporting the daughters. Is that about? 00:14:00.93\00:14:04.96 Right, you know, the mother came here as a companion, 00:14:04.97\00:14:07.09 but she actually had a medical evaluation and checkup. 00:14:07.10\00:14:12.53 And she was went, you know, 00:14:12.54\00:14:15.23 when she first got here, she was very tired 00:14:15.24\00:14:19.40 and her daughter was concerned because 00:14:19.41\00:14:21.01 mom wasn't doing too much. 00:14:21.02\00:14:22.55 She didn't move around very much. 00:14:22.56\00:14:24.17 And when she would try to do something, 00:14:24.18\00:14:27.75 she got very, very tried. 00:14:27.76\00:14:29.70 And so, when she first got here, 00:14:29.71\00:14:33.43 she pretty couldn't walk very well 00:14:33.44\00:14:35.53 and treadmill wasn't down, was very low, 00:14:35.54\00:14:39.70 but I was talking to her and just a few days ago, 00:14:39.71\00:14:44.06 I said, Josephine, 00:14:44.07\00:14:46.34 what's happened to you since you've been here? 00:14:46.35\00:14:48.69 And she says, I have so much more energy 00:14:48.70\00:14:51.49 than when I got here. 00:14:51.50\00:14:52.96 I said, what was your energy level like when you got here? 00:14:52.97\00:14:56.01 She is like, oh, I don't know maybe one or a two. 00:14:56.02\00:14:59.62 I said, what it is now? 00:14:59.63\00:15:00.79 She says, it's a nine over ten. Wow! 00:15:00.80\00:15:03.26 I have so much more energy 00:15:03.27\00:15:04.71 and I can do so many more things. 00:15:04.72\00:15:06.94 And so she was overjoyed and, 00:15:06.95\00:15:08.90 of course, her daughter's overjoyed. 00:15:08.91\00:15:10.42 And as we also reviewed Sharon, 00:15:10.43\00:15:13.94 you know, her treadmill time 00:15:13.95\00:15:15.10 increased to a minute and a half. 00:15:15.11\00:15:16.80 And so's she has done very, 00:15:16.81\00:15:19.53 very well since she's been here. 00:15:19.54\00:15:20.97 And not only that she's, 00:15:20.98\00:15:22.89 as we talked with the people I said, 00:15:22.90\00:15:24.90 what are your plans when you go home? 00:15:24.91\00:15:27.73 What are you going to do? 00:15:27.74\00:15:29.46 And how do you going to live? 00:15:29.47\00:15:31.88 Because it's really wonderful while you're here 00:15:31.89\00:15:34.25 and what you do while you're here is great, 00:15:34.26\00:15:35.90 you know, foods all prepared 00:15:35.91\00:15:38.45 and people encourage you to go exercise. 00:15:38.46\00:15:40.69 And so, she says, no, when I go home, 00:15:40.70\00:15:45.71 Sharon, says my diet is going to change. 00:15:45.72\00:15:47.98 And she's already talked to her husband 00:15:47.99\00:15:50.76 about some of these things, 00:15:50.77\00:15:52.21 because her husband happens to be an oyster fisherman. 00:15:52.22\00:15:56.47 Oh, my goodness. 00:15:56.48\00:15:57.83 And he has been doing this... In Virginia? 00:15:57.84\00:15:59.57 He had been doing this for a long time. 00:15:59.58\00:16:02.33 And so, he realizes that his wife is going to change. 00:16:02.34\00:16:06.97 And she says, that's right, I'm going to change. 00:16:06.98\00:16:09.36 And so he is going to cooperate with her, 00:16:09.37\00:16:13.10 which is wonderful. Yes. 00:16:13.11\00:16:14.74 So I'm looking forward to her continued success. 00:16:14.75\00:16:18.32 Well, you know, doctor, 00:16:18.33\00:16:19.30 I got to say that here we have mom, 00:16:19.31\00:16:23.36 who is kind of from the outside looking in. 00:16:23.37\00:16:26.88 And she came here to assist her daughter, 00:16:26.89\00:16:30.14 and I just see God's hand even with a guest 00:16:30.15\00:16:34.29 that is assisting another guest. 00:16:34.30\00:16:37.48 Namely the daughter in this case that she's gained 00:16:37.49\00:16:40.86 so much from just being here. 00:16:40.87\00:16:44.70 Can you comment about that? What happened? 00:16:44.71\00:16:48.05 I mean, we know, what happens to our guest, 00:16:48.06\00:16:50.37 but the companions. How did that happen? 00:16:50.38\00:16:53.62 Well, you know, the companions eat 00:16:53.63\00:16:55.77 the same sort of food. 00:16:55.78\00:16:57.73 You know, the guests eat 00:16:57.74\00:16:58.95 and they're encouraged to exercise. 00:16:58.96\00:17:01.20 And they, you know, 00:17:01.21\00:17:03.83 they attend the cooking schools and they begin... 00:17:03.84\00:17:06.14 And do they to go all the meetings as well? 00:17:06.15\00:17:07.79 They're able to if they want to. 00:17:07.80\00:17:09.93 Okay, so they're hearing from you and other doctors 00:17:09.94\00:17:13.31 about how lifestyle can change, okay. 00:17:13.32\00:17:17.23 Right. And so they learn about attitude. 00:17:17.24\00:17:19.06 You know, or even optimists or pessimists? 00:17:19.07\00:17:21.33 And you know attitude makes a big difference 00:17:21.34\00:17:24.48 as I think I'm sure, you know, 00:17:24.49\00:17:27.42 but most of our listeners do, 00:17:27.43\00:17:29.29 but if you don't realize that the way you look at things 00:17:29.30\00:17:32.06 makes a big difference, you know, 00:17:32.07\00:17:33.32 is a glass half full or is it half empty? 00:17:33.33\00:17:35.40 Yes. You know, 00:17:35.41\00:17:36.39 and behind the clouds there's a silver lining. 00:17:36.40\00:17:39.04 And you know, if it rains, that's wonderful because 00:17:39.05\00:17:42.07 we need the rain or if it snows, but you know, 00:17:42.08\00:17:44.11 there's sun above the clouds and it's something we need. 00:17:44.12\00:17:48.96 And if adversity happens. 00:17:48.97\00:17:51.75 Well, adversity happens, but what can I learn from it? 00:17:51.76\00:17:55.15 Amen. And you have a, 00:17:55.16\00:17:58.78 you'll be a lot happier life somewhat easier 00:17:58.79\00:18:00.48 if you live like that. 00:18:00.49\00:18:01.56 In fact, I tell the people I said. 00:18:01.57\00:18:04.39 And some people wait till they wake up 00:18:04.40\00:18:05.67 and they might say. 00:18:05.68\00:18:06.65 Well, when I wake up I'm gonna see how I feel 00:18:06.66\00:18:09.75 and then I've decide, 00:18:09.76\00:18:10.75 if I'm gonna have a good day or a bad day. 00:18:10.76\00:18:12.56 And I say, well, that's one way you can do it, 00:18:12.57\00:18:15.03 but I'd rather encourage you when you wake up 00:18:15.04\00:18:17.37 in the morning, it's gonna be a good day 00:18:17.38\00:18:19.80 and if you don't wake up 00:18:19.81\00:18:21.17 more than you don't have to worry about it, 00:18:21.18\00:18:22.87 it's not a difference, so... 00:18:22.88\00:18:25.15 It doesn't matter. Does it? 00:18:25.16\00:18:26.46 Yeah, it makes things a lot easier. 00:18:26.47\00:18:28.72 Yeah, so it's a matter of choice is what I hear you say. 00:18:28.73\00:18:32.34 Absolutely, it's a matter of choice. 00:18:32.35\00:18:34.17 So we can merely choose 00:18:34.18\00:18:35.65 whether we're gonna feel good today or not. 00:18:35.66\00:18:38.22 Right and you don't depend upon, 00:18:38.23\00:18:40.34 you know, if you got aches and pains, you know. 00:18:40.35\00:18:43.86 As you mature get older. 00:18:43.87\00:18:46.04 You've a few more aches and pains, 00:18:46.05\00:18:47.78 but you know what? You better be glad 00:18:47.79\00:18:50.29 you're getting older because have you considered 00:18:50.30\00:18:52.63 the alternative, if you're not getting older. 00:18:52.64\00:18:56.25 And I don't like that opportunity, 00:18:56.26\00:18:58.13 I rather be getting older, 00:18:58.14\00:19:00.45 more mature and having a few aches and pains. 00:19:00.46\00:19:02.95 Yes. So doctor, with regards to Sharon, 00:19:02.96\00:19:09.97 I understand, she had two procedures 00:19:09.98\00:19:13.13 for stents to be put in. That is correct. 00:19:13.14\00:19:15.68 She has another little concern 00:19:15.69\00:19:17.61 about something in her heart or aorta, I don't know. 00:19:17.62\00:19:22.61 Will this lifestyle eliminate future problems? 00:19:22.62\00:19:29.12 If she continues with the principles 00:19:29.13\00:19:30.75 that she has learned, as Dr. Dean Ornish had said 00:19:30.76\00:19:33.79 and Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn, and Dr. John McDougall 00:19:33.80\00:19:36.89 and we say those arteries which have been narrowed 00:19:36.90\00:19:40.06 with cholesterol deposits can open up again. 00:19:40.07\00:19:43.26 So in that sense, we can reverse the narrowing 00:19:43.27\00:19:46.25 of the arteries and reverse heart disease. 00:19:46.26\00:19:48.48 So it's a marvelous thing to know that, 00:19:48.49\00:19:50.79 if you are willing live properly, 00:19:50.80\00:19:53.45 you can reverse the disease 00:19:53.46\00:19:54.93 and if you're willing to live properly 00:19:54.94\00:19:56.39 you can even avoid getting it in the first place. 00:19:56.40\00:19:59.36 So it makes a big difference. 00:19:59.37\00:20:01.39 That's so wonderful to hear you say that, 00:20:01.40\00:20:03.56 of course, I know that. 00:20:03.57\00:20:05.05 I've heard you say these things in the past. 00:20:05.06\00:20:07.81 And as, you know, I'm also an alumni, 00:20:07.82\00:20:10.02 I've come through the program 00:20:10.03\00:20:12.19 and the many people I see that 00:20:12.20\00:20:14.04 attend our program that are so blessed. 00:20:14.05\00:20:17.01 And they're inspired, you can see the hope 00:20:17.02\00:20:20.25 and their eyes just kind of light up, 00:20:20.26\00:20:22.93 because now they have direction. 00:20:22.94\00:20:26.14 Well, before, what did I know? 00:20:26.15\00:20:27.87 I mean, okay, I'll have an oyster or whatever. 00:20:27.88\00:20:30.51 I wasn't even a Christian at that time. 00:20:30.52\00:20:33.83 And so God has blessed me 00:20:33.84\00:20:36.49 abundantly by bringing me to this place. 00:20:36.50\00:20:40.46 Is there any last minute 00:20:40.47\00:20:41.91 words that you can say to our viewers 00:20:41.92\00:20:44.98 that might encourage some of them 00:20:44.99\00:20:47.16 that have a heart situation? 00:20:47.17\00:20:49.41 Well, if you've got a heart situation 00:20:49.42\00:20:50.99 and don't know what to do. 00:20:51.00\00:20:52.32 You really ought to consider coming out to NEWSTART, 00:20:52.33\00:20:55.07 where we can help you and work with you. 00:20:55.08\00:20:57.11 Teach you the principles of healthful living, 00:20:57.12\00:20:59.73 so that you can receive the benefit 00:20:59.74\00:21:01.57 and enjoy life like the good Lord wants you to have. Thank you. 00:22:44.79\00:22:46.48 You're specialist is family practice 00:22:46.49\00:22:48.33 and also preventive medicine. 00:22:48.34\00:22:51.50 And you know, I want to just talk with you, 00:22:51.51\00:22:53.88 maybe we'll do a couple of programs, 00:22:53.89\00:22:55.22 but what shall we do in terms of first response 00:22:55.23\00:22:59.34 when we find about something? 00:22:59.35\00:23:00.85 You know, the very first time you find out 00:23:00.86\00:23:02.77 that you've an issue of some physical thing, 00:23:02.78\00:23:04.29 that sometimes a little daunting people say, 00:23:04.30\00:23:06.75 what would I do about that? 00:23:06.76\00:23:07.85 Is it serious? 00:23:07.86\00:23:08.89 Is it something I could let slide? 00:23:08.90\00:23:11.04 And what I wanna to talk about today is hypertension 00:23:11.05\00:23:14.70 or high blood pressure. Right. 00:23:14.71\00:23:17.61 You know, what is it? 00:23:17.62\00:23:19.21 Should we be concerned about it? 00:23:19.22\00:23:20.55 What shall we do if we find out that we're struggling 00:23:20.56\00:23:24.00 with high blood pressure, the first thing? 00:23:24.01\00:23:25.89 Right, right. 00:23:25.90\00:23:27.50 People find out that they have high blood pressure 00:23:27.51\00:23:29.34 in different settings. 00:23:29.35\00:23:30.88 But very commonly it's, 00:23:30.89\00:23:31.97 they're in a doctor's office for some other reason 00:23:31.98\00:23:34.10 and of course, we do vitals 00:23:34.11\00:23:35.20 and one of those vitals is blood pressure. 00:23:35.21\00:23:37.17 People say, wow, it's running high. 00:23:37.18\00:23:39.60 And it all depends, 00:23:39.61\00:23:41.00 I would say first and foremost as to whether, 00:23:41.01\00:23:43.49 it's a little bit high. 00:23:43.50\00:23:44.65 You know, as people get older 00:23:44.66\00:23:45.70 the blood pressure tends to go up. 00:23:45.71\00:23:47.46 Or whether it's really high 00:23:47.47\00:23:49.49 and they have hypertensive emergency for example. 00:23:49.50\00:23:53.88 So sometimes just when meet you 00:23:53.89\00:23:55.38 their blood pressure goes up 00:23:55.39\00:23:56.45 because they have that white coat syndrome. 00:23:56.46\00:23:58.37 Right, is that real? 00:23:58.38\00:23:59.97 It actually is. Yes. 00:23:59.98\00:24:01.48 White jacket hypertension. 00:24:01.49\00:24:03.36 I see it not infrequently, it's fairly common 00:24:03.37\00:24:07.18 and we try to do a couple of things 00:24:07.19\00:24:10.13 we go ahead and check it again, 00:24:10.14\00:24:11.50 after they've sort of calmed down a little bit. 00:24:11.51\00:24:13.79 I've literally even tried to not wear a jacket, 00:24:13.80\00:24:16.49 but I think it's actually doctor 00:24:16.50\00:24:18.11 hypertension not just white jacket. Right. 00:24:18.12\00:24:19.53 So, I mean, so that's kind of, 00:24:19.54\00:24:21.20 you know, you do two or three times 00:24:21.21\00:24:22.49 but then you find out yes, I do have hypertension. 00:24:22.50\00:24:25.24 So what's the next step what should you do then? 00:24:25.25\00:24:26.89 Yeah, but let me just to emphasize that 00:24:26.90\00:24:28.98 and that is we don't really make a diagnosis. 00:24:28.99\00:24:31.32 If we're measuring, you know, slightly alleviated 00:24:31.33\00:24:33.49 blood pressure we don't make a diagnosis hypertension, 00:24:33.50\00:24:35.40 we'd like to check it on two separate settings. 00:24:35.41\00:24:37.96 Because the fact of matter is our blood pressure goes up 00:24:37.97\00:24:40.52 and down throughout the day. 00:24:40.53\00:24:42.70 And so just because we get one spot 00:24:42.71\00:24:44.76 reading is not a diagnosis. 00:24:44.77\00:24:46.98 Unless it's incredibly high. 00:24:46.99\00:24:48.52 Okay, so let's say 00:24:48.53\00:24:49.50 now we do know it's high blood pressure. 00:24:49.51\00:24:51.08 Right, right. 00:24:51.09\00:24:52.62 You know, unfortunately 00:24:52.63\00:24:53.80 one of my colleagues who are not, 00:24:53.81\00:24:56.61 you know, oriented to lifestyle 00:24:56.62\00:24:59.30 sort of approach to the practice of medicine. 00:24:59.31\00:25:01.95 Often times they will, I joke that you tap their pen 00:25:01.96\00:25:04.82 and they write out a prescription, 00:25:04.83\00:25:06.41 you know, and unfortunately 00:25:06.42\00:25:07.55 a lot of patients are immediately 00:25:07.56\00:25:08.53 put on a prescription for a blood pressure. 00:25:08.54\00:25:10.91 If it's mild or even a lower moderate hypertension, 00:25:10.92\00:25:14.01 really the first thing we ought to do 00:25:14.02\00:25:16.46 is try to maximize lifestyle intervention. 00:25:16.47\00:25:19.17 Because in most cases for mal hypertension 00:25:19.18\00:25:21.72 it can be controlled with lifestyle. 00:25:21.73\00:25:23.17 So what are the... Give me some quick things 00:25:23.18\00:25:25.03 that they can do lifestyle wise. 00:25:25.04\00:25:26.20 There is a number of very simple things, 00:25:26.21\00:25:29.16 one is, you can go ahead and get exercise, 00:25:29.17\00:25:32.52 especially aerobic exercise things like walk, walk, walk. 00:25:32.53\00:25:36.61 Our bicycling is what I enjoy doing. 00:25:36.62\00:25:39.66 So exercise by itself is really quite powerful. 00:25:39.67\00:25:43.41 Second thing is in terms of diet is salts, 00:25:43.42\00:25:47.73 a certain percentage of patients are actually 00:25:47.74\00:25:50.76 very sensitive to salt. 00:25:50.77\00:25:51.74 So if they can reduce their salt, 00:25:51.75\00:25:53.38 that would be recommended. 00:25:53.39\00:25:56.02 Especially no adding of salt 00:25:56.03\00:25:57.55 and you know, looking at the labels 00:25:57.56\00:25:59.11 and seeing where it is. 00:25:59.12\00:26:00.82 The third thing is losing some weight by itself 00:26:00.83\00:26:04.53 can often times do the trick. 00:26:04.54\00:26:06.37 Alcohol or caffeine 00:26:06.38\00:26:08.57 or tobacco those things can go ahead 00:26:08.58\00:26:10.38 and raise the blood pressure as well. 00:26:10.39\00:26:12.90 And so you know, 00:26:12.91\00:26:14.19 and once they've tried those things 00:26:14.20\00:26:15.67 and those things are not working 00:26:15.68\00:26:17.16 and that's when may be they needed to talk about 00:26:17.17\00:26:19.93 some other things because it is not something 00:26:19.94\00:26:21.87 you just want to leave alone. 00:26:21.88\00:26:23.13 No it's, high blood pressure 00:26:23.14\00:26:25.23 or hypertension are called the silent killer 00:26:25.24\00:26:27.29 and that is without symptoms, 00:26:27.30\00:26:29.38 nevertheless if you don't know about it, 00:26:29.39\00:26:31.60 because you don't have symptoms 00:26:31.61\00:26:32.76 that put you at a significant risk of stroke. 00:26:32.77\00:26:37.68 And boy, that's very disabling, 00:26:37.69\00:26:39.27 you know, to have a stroke and lose a function. 00:26:39.28\00:26:41.93 As well as, you know, heart attack as well. 00:26:41.94\00:26:46.88 So would you agree that probably 00:26:46.89\00:26:48.53 hypertension is usually related to something else? 00:26:48.54\00:26:51.06 What you've said is you know, maybe they're overweight, 00:26:51.07\00:26:52.99 maybe they are this, maybe they're that. 00:26:53.00\00:26:54.81 So you probably try and help them to discover 00:26:54.82\00:26:56.90 what that issue is. 00:26:56.91\00:26:58.31 Yeah you know, high blood pressure 00:26:58.32\00:27:00.51 falls into 2 categories 00:27:00.52\00:27:01.79 probably won't get into that hear 00:27:01.80\00:27:02.92 but primary and secondary 00:27:02.93\00:27:04.22 it can be caused by some other medical conditions 00:27:04.23\00:27:06.67 but for the most cases 00:27:06.68\00:27:09.38 it has to with lifestyle or with aging. 00:27:09.39\00:27:12.46 Well, this is very practical advice to give you something, 00:27:12.47\00:27:16.09 if you know someone that's struggling with hypertension 00:27:16.10\00:27:18.29 or high blood pressure. 00:27:18.30\00:27:19.27 First of all, you should know your numbers, 00:27:19.28\00:27:20.39 get your blood pressure checked. 00:27:20.40\00:27:21.59 Checked a couple of times, 00:27:21.60\00:27:23.14 it's not something you should just not be aware of 00:27:23.15\00:27:27.18 and then follow the steps that you've heard today. 00:27:27.19\00:27:29.91 If you like this, 00:27:29.92\00:27:31.37 more information about this program 00:27:31.38\00:27:32.61 or this subject or others, 00:27:32.62\00:27:34.54 come to our website at NEWSTART Lifestyle Club 00:27:34.55\00:27:37.90 or NEWSTART Club actually, NEWSTARTclub.com. 00:27:37.91\00:27:41.61 And you can find this and other programs. 00:27:41.62\00:27:43.70 Thank you so much for being with us today 00:27:43.71\00:27:45.49 and also thank you, doctor, 00:27:45.50\00:27:46.69 for being with us.
