00:23 Hi friends and welcome to another edition of
00:26 NEWSTART Now.
00:27 We have a good friend of mine, Peter Newton
00:29 in the studio with us today, all the way from Colorado.
00:33 And Peter came to us with a
00:35 series of problems that I'd like you
00:37 to take a look at when he first arrived.
00:41 When I was a young boy
00:44 I was an onset of type 1 diabetes
00:47 at age two years old.
00:50 The reason I really needed to come is because
00:54 I needed to get my health under control,
00:56 watch my diet, get on the right foods,
00:59 get my exercise program
01:01 down to where when I head home
01:05 I could live a happy life.
01:08 When I plan to go home,
01:11 what I want most from this program
01:14 is to be able
01:16 to speak with God
01:17 communicate with God
01:19 better.
01:21 To help me out, I really need His guidance
01:24 at this point in time in my life.
01:26 and I think this is
01:28 the place to be.
01:33 Welcome back friends,
01:34 Peter how are you friend?
01:35 -Good, good.
01:37 -Good to see you! -How are you Don?
01:38 -I'm doing good -Great, great.
01:40 So, you came here looking for hope?
01:46 Did you find it?
01:47 -There is hope.
01:49 -There is a lot of hope.
01:51 -Tell us about some hope!
01:52 -Well, I had my doubts
01:55 when I came because I've been into a lot of places,
01:59 4 or 5 institutions... well not institutions, rehabs.
02:02 and stuff...
02:04 I thought this is my last chance
02:07 let's give it a try.
02:10 So yeah, there's hope
02:12 I'm feeling really good,
02:13 got my blood tests back.
02:15 My cholesterol is down.
02:17 It was at 195 total,
02:20 and it went clear down to 143.
02:22 -Wow, that's great!
02:24 -In 17 days I lost 9 pounds
02:29 -I thought you looked a little leaner
02:31 -Well I just shaved.
02:33 (laughs)
02:35 But anyways...
02:38 this program is just great.
02:40 The doctors,
02:41 the food, the cooks, the nutritionist...
02:46 it's just great.
02:47 So what did you like best?
02:49 If it's all great, what did you like the best?
02:51 The walking? They hydro?
02:55 I think the main thing I came here for
02:58 was my spiritual help.
03:00 Is that right? And how did you get that here?
03:02 Well at 7:45 you didn't want to be late
03:06 because it was time for Viola Kaiser
03:09 to get up there and talk.
03:10 And she was never late
03:14 And Viola is, for those who are watching,
03:17 Yes, she is our chaplain and councilor
03:22 -And councilor
03:23 Now you receive council from her,
03:26 you make appointments with her through the week
03:29 and maybe see her once or twice a week?
03:31 I see her three times a week.
03:32 Three to four times a week.
03:35 Cause I asked for more appointments
03:38 and they give them to me here.
03:39 They give you what you need.
03:41 -And she kind of took you by the hand?
03:43 -She did.
03:45 She's very experienced in
03:49 some of my problems. I had substance abuse problems
03:54 She really, really guided me along here
03:59 to where there is hope
04:01 I'm going to keep in contact with her on the phone,
04:04 and just go from there. It's great.
04:07 -Alright!
04:09 Now, what about diabetes?
04:12 I know you've been diabetic
04:15 since you were two years old,
04:17 has that changed at all?
04:21 Yes it has.
04:24 My blood sugar when I came in was around 211
04:30 They're down to 155 and going down day by day
04:34 I have the insulin pump
04:37 and Dr. DeRose is familiar with those and getting it set
04:43 There's like five or six different settings
04:45 I'm on six settings now
04:47 because of the exercise and the diet
04:50 missing meals at night
04:52 we set the basal and the bolus different
04:55 I've had this insulin pump since late 2006
05:00 and never have had it set.
05:03 -And you've had to reset it here
05:04 -Yes. -So you're taking less insulin?
05:07 -Yes, yes.
05:09 So you've had some progress with your diabetes.
05:12 -Oh definitely!
05:13 Now why do you think that that has happened?
05:16 What have you learned here,
05:19 in a word or two,
05:20 that has helped you reduce your glucose?
05:24 Well...
05:26 Whole plant foods eaten whole.
05:28 -Amen! (laughs)
05:30 You got that down pretty good!
05:33 -Your green vegetables...
05:35 and the right amount of carb intake for me
05:40 carb to insulin ratio...
05:44 Getting it all set.
05:48 -Wonderful.
05:49 Now what about walking?
05:53 You know I picked you up at the airport, I remember,
05:56 two weeks ago. How could I not.
05:58 And you were strong then
06:00 and you're healthy...apparently
06:03 it just looked that way.
06:05 But you were able to walk and do things other guests couldn't.
06:10 Are you walking 40 miles a day?
06:13 Or any big record that you're breaking here?
06:16 Well I came in here thinking, "you know,
06:19 I don't know how much walking I'm gonna do"
06:21 I have a broken ankle.
06:22 I still have another surgery to do
06:25 -I didn't know about that!
06:26 Yes, I had a crushed heel
06:33 I still have an infection,
06:35 which the infection is getting better,
06:37 the drainage is a lot less on my foot.
06:41 I still have to get a surgery, and it's time to get it done
06:43 The doctor will be able to do it
06:46 because everything is going good.
06:47 It's going to work out.
06:50 I probably was getting a half of a mile
06:53 when I showed up.
06:55 And through lots of prayers
06:58 and exercises
07:01 I'm up to over 5 miles today.
07:04 -Wow!
07:05 And that's each and every day?
07:06 -Each and every day.
07:08 -Wow. Well Praise God!
07:10 You know He certainly has answered your prayers.
07:13 -Yes. Maybe I won't even need to have that surgery.
07:16 -Maybe not.
07:18 I don't know why those bones healed the way they did,
07:21 but they are healing.
07:22 -You know we have many people come here
07:26 and things happen - I call them miracles.
07:29 Because I get to witness
07:30 people going through these changes,
07:32 where they've been all over the world trying to get treatments,
07:36 and nobody seems to be able to help them.
07:38 and lo and behold, they come here to this place,
07:41 and all of the sudden, they've feeling better!
07:44 So God's hand is truly at work here.
07:47 -Yes.
07:48 -There's just no question about it.
07:50 For about 33 years now, I guess you know that.
07:52 -Oh yes, yes.
07:54 -Alright, so now when you go home,
07:59 what are you going to do when you get home?
08:02 Well...
08:04 Whole plant foods eaten whole. (laughs)
08:06 That's the number 1
08:09 The exercise.
08:10 I'm going to continue the exercise
08:12 -Now you're a farmer, right?
08:14 -That's right
08:15 Do you get enough exercise doing that?
08:17 Oh...not enjoyable exercise I guess
08:20 -That's work huh? -I was taught here to take
08:23 a little bit of time off, take one of the kids
08:26 and walk a couple miles with them,
08:29 and enjoy the walk.
08:30 But anyway...
08:32 At times there is a lot of exercise to work
08:34 I won't need to get any walking. (laughs)
08:38 But yes we do, we get a lot of exercise.
08:41 Now what about the family, when you get back there
08:44 and Thanksgiving comes or Christmas holiday
08:47 and everyone's sitting around the table with turkey
08:50 and beef and whatever they have,
08:52 what are you going to do?
08:54 Well, we had a phone conference
08:57 we're having Christmas dinner at my Mother's house
09:03 and we had a phone conference with Viola and my Mother
09:07 and my Mother was getting recipes over the phone
09:09 from Viola. (laughs)
09:11 So I think I'm going to be taken care of there.
09:13 (laughs) -Good!
09:15 Well you know what we do, we go to my Son's house
09:17 or my daughter's
09:19 and they have all the trimmings
09:20 and whatever else they're going to eat
09:22 and we just eat the trimmings.
09:24 You know potatoes... -Yes, yes
09:29 Ok, so you've learned what you need to do
09:33 to change your life.
09:34 And you've learned that in about 17 days
09:38 -Yes.
09:39 Could you have read a book and done this?
09:42 -No.
09:43 I've tried it.
09:45 No...you need the push.
09:50 I would call it "the push."
09:52 The atmosphere
09:53 The support, the atmosphere, the loving people,
09:58 the people that you're going through this with.
10:00 Listen to their stories...
10:03 We help each other out here.
10:05 -Amen.
10:07 Well Pete I just want to bless you
10:11 and wish you all the encouragement in the world
10:14 I want to thank you for being on our program
10:16 -You bet. Thank you for having me here.
10:19 -God bless you in a mighty way.
10:21 And friends thank you for joining us
10:23 But don't go away. We have an important tip
10:26 and then Dr. David DeRose
