Good to be with you Ron. 00:11:34.45\00:11:35.81 -Good to see you! 00:11:35.87\00:11:36.84 You know 00:11:37.42\00:11:38.39 whenever I 00:11:38.57\00:11:40.06 try or even attempt to glorify the doctors here 00:11:40.54\00:11:44.66 I know I'm put in my place real quick. 00:11:45.09\00:11:47.45 But I have to comment 00:11:47.87\00:11:49.30 We have a lady who's been all over the world 00:11:49.39\00:11:52.15 receiving treatment for over 30 years 00:11:53.36\00:11:57.24 and she comes here. 00:11:57.30\00:11:58.78 How is it that we found this problem? 00:11:59.06\00:12:02.21 Well, you know you hear this story 00:12:02.66\00:12:05.03 from different perspectives 00:12:05.04\00:12:06.30 and I'll be honest with you 00:12:06.31\00:12:07.87 really I think Gudrun hit the nail on the head when she 00:12:08.21\00:12:10.81 mentioned that God is really at work--He's leading. 00:12:11.03\00:12:14.18 And for those of my friends who are physicians, 00:12:14.51\00:12:17.57 sometimes it's not enough even to make the correct diagnosis 00:12:17.75\00:12:22.30 It's somehow making that diagnosis 00:12:22.60\00:12:24.84 in the context of someone's entire lifestyle 00:12:25.00\00:12:27.33 exactly what they're dealing with 00:12:27.39\00:12:29.12 explaining to the person, 00:12:29.27\00:12:31.09 helping them see the connection 00:12:31.24\00:12:32.66 and then get on a treatment program 00:12:32.75\00:12:34.66 where they actually see some impact. 00:12:34.78\00:12:36.48 It's not that no one had ever mentioned 00:12:36.57\00:12:38.87 thyroid disease with Gudrun 00:12:39.21\00:12:41.81 In fact, awhile into her program 00:12:41.87\00:12:44.75 she got something that she had been 00:12:45.03\00:12:47.66 very, very... 00:12:48.30\00:12:49.87 very much struggling to get for about a week 00:12:51.33\00:12:54.36 while she had been here. 00:12:54.63\00:12:55.60 And that was lab reports from Denmark. 00:12:55.61\00:12:57.75 -Oh! 00:12:58.09\00:12:59.30 And how did they relate to the lab reports we've done here? 00:12:59.45\00:13:04.00 -Well the interesting thing about what had been done 00:13:04.06\00:13:06.45 is there was this consistant pattern over the years 00:13:06.51\00:13:09.33 that when Gudrun was put on thyroid replacement, 00:13:09.54\00:13:13.15 she had been on thyroid medications over the years, 00:13:13.24\00:13:16.33 we'd see improvement in certain levels 00:13:16.57\00:13:19.21 and then someone would take her off or she'd go off of them 00:13:19.42\00:13:23.00 and you'd see these same numbers worsen. 00:13:23.21\00:13:26.24 To get that bird's eye view 00:13:26.45\00:13:28.51 in records that she actually had 00:13:28.52\00:13:30.81 made it fairly clear what was going on 00:13:31.09\00:13:33.63 with her thyroid by certain measurements that had been done. 00:13:33.78\00:13:36.51 One of them that we often look at 00:13:36.60\00:13:38.60 in low thyroid states is called TSH, 00:13:38.69\00:13:41.36 or Thyroid Stimulating Hormone. 00:13:41.48\00:13:43.45 -What is it that you discovered 00:13:44.45\00:13:46.18 that's so much different 00:13:46.33\00:13:47.87 then perhaps the other doctors 00:13:48.06\00:13:49.75 And I know that you're now treating her 00:13:50.09\00:13:52.57 Can you explain to the viewers what that is? 00:13:52.75\00:13:55.60 -Sure. 00:13:55.63\00:13:56.75 Many people have thyroid problems, 00:13:57.00\00:13:59.00 and some of you tuning in 00:13:59.09\00:14:00.24 today may have problems with your thyroid, 00:14:00.66\00:14:03.03 TSH, or Thyroid Stimulating Hormone, 00:14:03.18\00:14:05.72 is probably the single best marker for low thyroid states. 00:14:05.84\00:14:10.00 If that TSH is high 00:14:10.03\00:14:11.75 it indicates a thyroid deficiency in most cases. 00:14:12.03\00:14:16.18 And doesn't that seem ironic 00:14:16.24\00:14:17.51 to actually get a blood test of something 00:14:17.54\00:14:19.72 that has to do with thyroid. 00:14:19.84\00:14:20.81 If it's high, you've got a problem 00:14:20.82\00:14:21.79 -Right. (laughs) 00:14:21.87\00:14:23.24 The way I explain it to patients, Ron, 00:14:23.36\00:14:25.57 is your pituitary gland, 00:14:25.81\00:14:28.45 a little gland at the base of your brain, 00:14:28.54\00:14:30.63 is monitoring thyroid status throughout your body. 00:14:30.75\00:14:33.87 Everyone of us -- our pituitary is doing that job. 00:14:34.12\00:14:37.12 Our pituitary actually talks with the thyroid. 00:14:37.63\00:14:41.12 Have you ever heard your 00:14:41.57\00:14:42.75 pituitary talking to your thyroid? 00:14:42.76\00:14:44.75 -Uh, not lately. (laughs) -That's good. 00:14:45.15\00:14:48.45 -Did I pass that test? -Yes you passed that test. 00:14:48.60\00:14:50.63 Because it doesn't actually speak audibly 00:14:50.75\00:14:53.21 to the thyroid gland, 00:14:53.30\00:14:54.51 it speaks by sending a chemical message called TSH. 00:14:54.60\00:14:57.84 If your thyroid, which is in the base of your neck, 00:14:58.84\00:15:01.30 is sluggish, 00:15:01.51\00:15:02.66 the pituitary starts to say, "Work harder" 00:15:03.03\00:15:07.06 "Work harder!" 00:15:07.51\00:15:09.06 And increasing the volume, if you will, 00:15:09.09\00:15:11.60 is sending more TSH. That's how it does it. 00:15:11.61\00:15:14.30 So if your thyroid is sluggish 00:15:14.48\00:15:16.27 it will raise the levels of TSH. 00:15:16.36\00:15:19.27 That is our indication on a blood test 00:15:19.54\00:15:22.03 of someone having a problem with hypothyroidism 00:15:22.24\00:15:25.45 Now there are unusual situations 00:15:25.51\00:15:27.24 where things kind of work differently, 00:15:27.25\00:15:28.78 but for all intents and purposes 00:15:29.03\00:15:30.57 in most people, if they're hypothyroid 00:15:30.72\00:15:33.00 from failure of the thyroid gland 00:15:33.12\00:15:34.84 that TSH level will be high. 00:15:35.06\00:15:36.63 So we saw this pattern in Gudrun 00:15:36.81\00:15:39.15 that TSH was higher than it should have been, 00:15:41.09\00:15:43.42 she'd be treated, those numbers would improve 00:15:43.72\00:15:46.39 and yet she wasn't really feeling much better 00:15:46.87\00:15:51.51 when she was under treatment. 00:15:51.60\00:15:52.72 and in fact, 00:15:52.75\00:15:53.72 they would often over-treat her. 00:15:53.73\00:15:55.27 They would give her so much that the TSH level would get too low 00:15:55.36\00:15:59.00 And presumably they might have been trying to manipulate 00:15:59.21\00:16:03.24 the level of the hormone replacement 00:16:03.27\00:16:05.27 based on her symptoms. 00:16:05.51\00:16:07.57 It's very common, we often do that. 00:16:07.78\00:16:10.18 And then we check the blood work, 00:16:10.30\00:16:11.60 as they did in Denmark, just like we do in the states 00:16:11.66\00:16:14.06 the level is then too low 00:16:14.33\00:16:16.12 and then people would back off. 00:16:16.39\00:16:17.57 So she was kind of on this cycle 00:16:17.66\00:16:20.30 where she'd be on the thyroid replacement, 00:16:20.42\00:16:22.48 she wouldn't feel much better, 00:16:22.54\00:16:24.00 they'd continue to ramp it up, 00:16:24.15\00:16:25.63 she ended up getting too much. 00:16:25.69\00:16:27.27 she maybe was feeling worse, 00:16:27.45\00:16:29.39 and then they'd stop it, 00:16:29.54\00:16:31.30 or she would stop it altogether. 00:16:31.33\00:16:32.84 One of the interesting things 00:16:33.45\00:16:35.03 that some of the researches have found 00:16:35.04\00:16:36.45 with thyroid is still very controversial, 00:16:36.51\00:16:38.45 but it's with certain people 00:16:38.72\00:16:40.15 they actually do best if we replace 00:16:40.33\00:16:43.03 not just T4... 00:16:43.09\00:16:45.63 let me explain it this way. 00:16:46.12\00:16:47.33 The thyroid actually makes two active hormones, 00:16:47.48\00:16:50.57 for short we call them T3 and T4 00:16:51.45\00:16:54.06 most people it seems can do just fine 00:16:54.72\00:16:57.06 with taking T4 alone. 00:16:57.24\00:16:59.06 So if one of our viewers 00:16:59.33\00:17:02.00 has been on thyroid replacement medication-- 00:17:02.03\00:17:04.63 maybe you've taken Synthroid, 00:17:04.69\00:17:06.21 or Levoxyl, 00:17:06.45\00:17:07.48 or one of these medications-- 00:17:07.49\00:17:08.60 these are T4 preparations. 00:17:08.63\00:17:11.18 Levothyroxine 00:17:11.27\00:17:12.54 generic name for it. 00:17:12.66\00:17:13.87 Many people, if they're hypothyroid, 00:17:14.15\00:17:16.21 that's all they take, T4, 00:17:16.24\00:17:17.69 and they seem to do fine. 00:17:17.84\00:17:19.15 There's another percentage of the population, 00:17:19.45\00:17:21.51 seems to be small, 00:17:21.54\00:17:22.54 that if they're not also getting some T3 00:17:22.72\00:17:25.24 that symptomatically they don't do as well, 00:17:25.51\00:17:27.54 and this was the case with Gudrun. 00:17:27.78\00:17:30.42 -this was the case with her... 00:17:30.43\00:17:31.57 So we put her on a little bit of T3 00:17:31.63\00:17:33.81 along with the T4 and 00:17:34.06\00:17:36.03 my connection of what she was describing 00:17:37.06\00:17:39.36 is in the first time in treating the thyroid, 00:17:39.66\00:17:42.36 she's actually not only 00:17:42.60\00:17:44.06 getting the proper thyroid replacement, 00:17:45.03\00:17:47.18 but she's actually feeling better. 00:17:47.21\00:17:48.75 Now how much of that is the Lord's blessing 00:17:49.06\00:17:51.48 some of our viewing physicians might say, "well... 00:17:51.60\00:17:55.45 you know this is just some sort of placebo effect 00:17:55.57\00:17:57.75 but if you look at the literature 00:17:57.81\00:17:59.57 there really seems to be something 00:17:59.58\00:18:01.33 in certain patients, 00:18:01.39\00:18:02.60 maybe it has to do with there 00:18:02.66\00:18:03.87 ability or inability to convert T4 to T3 00:18:04.12\00:18:07.33 But we know the thyroid gland, 00:18:07.39\00:18:09.39 if it's working healthfully, 00:18:09.48\00:18:11.09 working properly, 00:18:11.15\00:18:12.24 is making both T3 and T4 00:18:12.36\00:18:14.45 and in Gudrun's case it seemed like that combination 00:18:14.57\00:18:17.21 really made a difference that she hadn't seen 00:18:17.39\00:18:19.78 with the typical, normal strategy of thyroid replacement. 00:18:20.03\00:18:23.06 -Well she considers it a birthday gift 00:18:23.36\00:18:25.84 that this discovery has been made. 00:18:26.51\00:18:29.33 But I've got to ask you at the same time, 00:18:29.54\00:18:31.18 What about... 00:18:31.24\00:18:32.39 Iodine. How does that play a part 00:18:33.30\00:18:36.21 with hypothyroidism? 00:18:36.30\00:18:40.39 Iodine is a very tricky element, 00:18:40.51\00:18:43.24 or micronutrient as we often refer to it as. 00:18:43.39\00:18:46.09 It is true that you need iodine 00:18:46.30\00:18:48.33 to make thyroid hormone. 00:18:48.60\00:18:50.18 -Is there enough in the salt? 00:18:50.33\00:18:51.63 Iodized salt for most people 00:18:52.66\00:18:54.54 seems to address their iodine need 00:18:54.55\00:18:56.72 in fact most people don't need iodized salt 00:18:56.73\00:18:59.15 unless they're living in regions of the country 00:18:59.36\00:19:01.51 that are iodine deficient. 00:19:01.66\00:19:03.00 -Seaweed, would that help? 00:19:03.12\00:19:04.45 Well seaweed has a lot of iodine, 00:19:04.57\00:19:06.15 now here's the catch, Ron, 00:19:06.16\00:19:07.30 Both too little iodine 00:19:07.81\00:19:11.27 and too much iodine 00:19:11.33\00:19:12.87 can shut down the thyroid. 00:19:13.18\00:19:14.42 -Really? 00:19:14.54\00:19:15.51 Yes, so if you give large amounts of iodine 00:19:15.52\00:19:17.51 that can actually depress thyroid function. 00:19:17.75\00:19:19.75 -Well what about people in Asia, say Korea or Japan, 00:19:19.81\00:19:23.33 who eat a lot of seaweed, 00:19:23.60\00:19:25.45 are they at risk? 00:19:26.54\00:19:29.54 -There's actually some interesting relationships 00:19:29.72\00:19:31.72 especially if a person 00:19:31.78\00:19:33.33 had been getting lower 00:19:33.51\00:19:34.51 iodine at one point in their life 00:19:34.60\00:19:36.21 then ramping that up 00:19:36.24\00:19:37.24 may increase their risk of problems like thyroid nodules, 00:19:37.48\00:19:40.84 some of those may even be precancerous 00:19:41.12\00:19:43.48 So iodine is not something I ever recommend a lay person 00:19:43.84\00:19:48.42 supplementing. 00:19:48.48\00:19:49.84 If they're seeing a physician who really 00:19:50.06\00:19:52.09 is expert 00:19:52.36\00:19:54.09 in knowing how to use iodine to treat the thyroid 00:19:54.18\00:19:57.03 they're in great shape. 00:19:57.18\00:19:58.15 Because I'll be honest with you, 00:19:58.21\00:19:59.27 I've worked with lots of endocrinologists 00:19:59.28\00:20:01.06 but most of them feel, 00:20:01.27\00:20:02.39 at least in their clinical practice, 00:20:02.51\00:20:04.66 Iodine is such a difficult thing to try to titrate 00:20:05.09\00:20:08.39 or to try to dose properly 00:20:08.60\00:20:10.48 that they actually tend to avoid 00:20:10.78\00:20:12.48 using iodine at all and they just would 00:20:12.72\00:20:14.66 replace the thyroid if it's deficient 00:20:14.78\00:20:17.03 -So... 00:20:17.24\00:20:18.21 for our viewers at home that are listening in, 00:20:18.45\00:20:21.15 I being one of them listening very intently, 00:20:21.48\00:20:24.60 we shouldn't try iodine on our own 00:20:24.75\00:20:28.30 without, perhaps, our physician or our doctor 00:20:28.42\00:20:31.69 helping us along. -Yeah I wouldn't recommend it. 00:20:32.12\00:20:33.69 The problem is like I eluded to, Ron, 00:20:33.72\00:20:36.15 iodine is important, 00:20:36.30\00:20:37.63 but taking to much of it is a problem. 00:20:38.18\00:20:39.84 And the average doctor, 00:20:40.00\00:20:41.33 even the average endocrinologist, 00:20:41.63\00:20:43.33 if you say, "I want to take some iodine to treat this" 00:20:43.42\00:20:45.75 in my experience most of them are 00:20:46.15\00:20:47.39 going to discourage you from doing it 00:20:47.48\00:20:48.75 just because it is do difficult to regulate. 00:20:48.78\00:20:52.03 Now we've spent a lot of time now doctor 00:20:52.42\00:20:54.87 we only have a few seconds left 00:20:55.06\00:20:56.84 with the thyroid 00:20:57.42\00:20:59.09 are there any last remarks you'd like to make? 00:20:59.21\00:21:02.42 Basically the remark I'd like to make is 00:21:03.24\00:21:05.00 whether it's a thyroid problem, or some other 00:21:05.06\00:21:07.12 immunologic or endocrine problem 00:21:07.24\00:21:09.33 there are some incredible 00:21:09.51\00:21:10.48 insights that God has in lifestyle 00:21:10.57\00:21:12.36 that can make a difference for you. 00:21:12.42\00:21:13.63 And then just working with a team of professionals, 00:21:13.84\00:21:15.78 whether it's in your own hometown or here at Weimar, 00:21:15.79\00:21:17.84 can make a huge difference. 00:21:18.12\00:21:19.30 Well doctor I want to thank you for coming on our program 00:21:19.75\00:21:22.69 it's always a pleasure to see you 00:21:23.12\00:21:24.60 God bless you in your work. 00:21:25.09\00:21:26.51 And thank you friends 00:21:27.00\00:21:28.03 but don't go away, we have a tip for you right after this. 00:21:28.06\00:21:31.45 Hello, I'm Dr. David DeRose 00:21:32.57\00:21:34.63 You know, helping a friend, neighbor, or relative 00:21:35.12\00:21:37.72 have better health 00:21:37.81\00:21:38.78 is one of the most practical 00:21:38.79\00:21:39.87 forms of health ministry available. 00:21:40.06\00:21:42.09 However, if you're not a health professional 00:21:42.54\00:21:44.24 it can be extremely difficult 00:21:44.42\00:21:46.00 to help someone to access 00:21:46.03\00:21:47.87 reliable, credible, up-to-date health information. 00:21:47.88\00:21:51.15 That's why I recommend 00:21:51.78\00:21:53.27 The NEWSTART Lifestyle Club. 00:21:53.42\00:21:55.06 The club is based on the world-famous NEWSTART principles 00:21:55.24\00:21:58.36 that have helped millions be well 00:21:58.45\00:22:00.00 naturally without the use of drugs. 00:22:00.09\00:22:01.84 The club offers streaming video, 00:22:02.09\00:22:04.12 expert health advice, wellness tips, tools, and more! 00:22:04.18\00:22:07.27 And when it comes to ministry 00:22:07.72\00:22:09.30 the NEWSTART Lifestyle Club provides a way 00:22:09.42\00:22:11.42 for sponsor churches and health organizations 00:22:11.45\00:22:13.87 to connect with club 00:22:14.03\00:22:15.12 members in their own communities. 00:22:15.21\00:22:17.12 If you'd like to learn more 00:22:17.87\00:22:19.06 about how the NEWSTART Lifestyle Club 00:22:19.12\00:22:20.84 can make a difference in your health outreach, 00:22:21.00\00:22:23.03 Call... 00:22:23.18\00:22:24.18 and ask for your free copy of 00:22:27.54\00:22:29.39 Health Evangelism Made Simple. 00:22:29.60\00:22:33.09 Welcome to NEWSTART at Home 00:22:48.81\00:22:50.36 I'm your host today, Dr. David DeRose 00:22:50.48\00:22:52.78 and with me, registered dietitian 00:22:53.09\00:22:55.30 Hildelisa Flickinger. 00:22:55.39\00:22:56.60 Hildelisa it's great to have you with us today. 00:22:56.72\00:22:58.78 Thank you, glad to be here. 00:22:59.03\00:23:00.24 Hildelisa, people today,as we've talked about in past broadcasts 00:23:00.45\00:23:05.09 really have concerns--many of them with putting on weight. 00:23:05.21\00:23:08.54 Is this really as big of a 00:23:08.72\00:23:10.12 problem as many people think it is? 00:23:10.18\00:23:12.21 Definitely! We have an obesity 00:23:12.36\00:23:14.21 crisis in our country today. 00:23:14.36\00:23:16.06 And in light of that, 00:23:16.24\00:23:17.36 there's no shortage of diets, is there? 00:23:17.63\00:23:20.30 -No, there's not. 00:23:20.31\00:23:21.54 What we're really trying to do today is 00:23:21.63\00:23:23.81 look at something really practical 00:23:24.21\00:23:25.84 that someone could do in just a few minutes. 00:23:26.06\00:23:28.24 If they can catch an idea of, this 00:23:28.33\00:23:30.48 so called, "volumetrics concept" 00:23:30.69\00:23:33.72 we believe it can make a big difference. 00:23:34.21\00:23:36.09 What is this talk about "volumetrics"? 00:23:36.30\00:23:39.21 -Well that is from a study from Penn State University 00:23:39.39\00:23:43.09 and it taps into a concept that I believe 00:23:43.30\00:23:45.60 that the NEWSTART program here at 00:23:45.63\00:23:47.33 Weimar Center for Health and Education 00:23:47.36\00:23:50.06 have known for years. 00:23:50.24\00:23:51.48 And that is that if you eat foods that are 00:23:51.72\00:23:54.66 less in energy density, 00:23:54.84\00:23:56.78 you'll lose weight. 00:23:57.06\00:23:58.51 - Ok, so energy density 00:23:59.03\00:24:01.03 refers then to the amount of 00:24:01.18\00:24:03.21 calories in a given volume of food, is that right? 00:24:03.27\00:24:06.81 -Exactly. 00:24:07.06\00:24:08.03 So if you fill your plate up with these foods 00:24:08.06\00:24:09.84 you'll be eating more foods, 00:24:10.00\00:24:11.57 but eating less calories. 00:24:11.66\00:24:13.33 - Ok, so we don't have to say, 00:24:13.48\00:24:15.24 "Push yourself away from the table. Don't eat fast." 00:24:15.33\00:24:18.57 But we can say, "Eat the right foods. 00:24:18.69\00:24:20.33 Eat foods that fill you up, 00:24:20.48\00:24:22.27 but don't give you a lot of calories." 00:24:22.39\00:24:23.66 -Exactly. And what do you think those 00:24:23.67\00:24:25.39 foods that are low in energy density are? 00:24:25.51\00:24:28.27 - Well the first thing that comes to my mind, Hildelisa, 00:24:28.30\00:24:30.78 is iceberg lettuce. 00:24:30.81\00:24:32.06 I mean there's a lot of food there, 00:24:32.12\00:24:34.27 but not many calories, are there? 00:24:34.30\00:24:36.21 -Definitely. So that would be 00:24:36.45\00:24:38.24 plant based foods, like the fruits, 00:24:38.48\00:24:41.21 and the vegetables, and the whole grains. 00:24:41.30\00:24:43.51 So if you eat these foods you can eat more food 00:24:44.00\00:24:46.42 and less calories 00:24:46.48\00:24:47.72 Now what's more is that these plant based foods 00:24:48.63\00:24:51.18 are going to prevent chronic diseases 00:24:51.21\00:24:53.60 and they're going to keep your weight down. 00:24:54.00\00:24:56.78 Hildelisa, one of the 00:24:58.69\00:25:00.12 questions is that we're talking about 00:25:00.24\00:25:01.78 really getting these foods that have fewer calories in them 00:25:02.03\00:25:05.42 but couldn't someone just say, 00:25:06.48\00:25:08.33 "Can I eat less of the foods with more calories" 00:25:08.48\00:25:11.45 They say, "I like my hamburgers 00:25:11.46\00:25:12.69 and milkshakes and french fries." 00:25:12.78\00:25:14.36 -Well the principle is that 00:25:14.72\00:25:16.51 foods that are high in water content 00:25:16.52\00:25:19.18 and fiber content, 00:25:19.39\00:25:20.48 those are things that are going to fill you up so you eat less. 00:25:20.51\00:25:23.54 For example, fruits 00:25:23.84\00:25:25.09 they are 80-95% water 00:25:25.18\00:25:28.06 fruits and vegetables. 00:25:28.12\00:25:29.45 and hot grains are 85% water 00:25:29.54\00:25:32.33 and soups, they can be up to 95% water. 00:25:32.48\00:25:35.84 -So they fill you up, 00:25:36.24\00:25:37.57 but they don't give you a lot of calories. 00:25:37.69\00:25:39.18 -Right. Now do you suppose that 00:25:39.24\00:25:41.18 if you just drink a big glass of water 00:25:41.27\00:25:44.03 with your hamburger, will that work? 00:25:44.15\00:25:46.36 Well I'm not going to eat a hamburger, 00:25:46.57\00:25:47.66 Hildelisa, don't worry. 00:25:47.75\00:25:49.15 Tell us, is that a solution if someone wants to say, 00:25:49.42\00:25:52.06 "I'll have 80% water at my meal and eat the burger and fries?" 00:25:52.12\00:25:55.24 No, that wouldn't work. 00:25:55.39\00:25:56.69 The water has to be in the food in order to work. 00:25:56.72\00:26:00.06 -And why is that? 00:26:00.33\00:26:01.36 -Well because that is how you're going to fill up. 00:26:01.69\00:26:04.09 -Ok... 00:26:04.39\00:26:05.39 And the food is going to have less calories 00:26:05.66\00:26:08.30 whereas if you eat the hamburger 00:26:08.33\00:26:09.78 even though you have the glass of water, 00:26:09.79\00:26:11.57 you're going to eat all the calories in that hamburger, 00:26:11.84\00:26:15.09 for example. 00:26:15.12\00:26:16.09 Now let's just visualize what we're talking about 00:26:16.24\00:26:18.87 I have here 00:26:19.21\00:26:20.63 100 calories of rasins, or dried grapes, 00:26:21.12\00:26:24.54 it's about less than a quarter cup, 00:26:24.60\00:26:26.24 and about 100 calories of grapes, 00:26:26.42\00:26:29.18 a little less than two cups. 00:26:29.42\00:26:31.12 Now which one would you rather eat? 00:26:31.30\00:26:33.09 -Now are you telling me that there's the 00:26:33.39\00:26:34.48 same number of calories in each of those? 00:26:34.57\00:26:36.33 -Exactly. 00:26:36.34\00:26:37.33 -Well if I'm wanting to fill up with less calories, 00:26:38.00\00:26:41.42 I'm gonna choose the grapes. 00:26:41.48\00:26:42.63 Definitely, that is going to fill you up 00:26:43.00\00:26:45.69 and give you the same amount of calories, 00:26:46.00\00:26:48.18 but it's so easy to eat this amount of rasins 00:26:48.24\00:26:50.72 whereas the grapes will definitely fill you up. 00:26:51.03\00:26:55.00 So we're not saying the rasins aren't a healthy snack, 00:26:55.18\00:26:58.51 but they are a problem when it 00:26:58.72\00:27:00.36 comes to giving you lots of calories 00:27:00.37\00:27:02.21 in a small amount of volume. 00:27:02.27\00:27:03.39 -When you're trying to watch your weight, yes. 00:27:03.40\00:27:05.45 Now pasta and italian bread 00:27:05.66\00:27:09.66 have similar ingredients. 00:27:09.69\00:27:11.18 But if you think about it, 00:27:11.27\00:27:12.33 the pasta absorbs the water that it's cooked in, 00:27:12.39\00:27:15.57 so it's going to be half as energy dense 00:27:15.66\00:27:18.15 as the bread. 00:27:18.39\00:27:19.45 So that's the concept we're talking about. 00:27:19.72\00:27:21.69 The dryer the food, the more calories. 00:27:22.06\00:27:24.39 Hildelisa, this is great information 00:27:24.81\00:27:27.00 hopefully you've learned some 00:27:27.09\00:27:28.18 things today that can make a difference 00:27:28.24\00:27:29.84 as far as helping you trim a few of those 00:27:30.09\00:27:32.21 aditional pounds you're trying to get rid of. 00:27:32.30\00:27:34.24 I'm Dr. David DeRose letting you know 00:27:34.33\00:27:36.12 that if you want more information, 00:27:36.21\00:27:37.39 go to our website, 00:27:37.51\00:27:38.60 Well friends that's it for today 00:27:47.84\00:27:49.60 thank you for joining us, 00:27:49.66\00:27:50.84 thank you for those who have 00:27:51.42\00:27:52.72 partnered with us to make this show possible. 00:27:52.73\00:27:54.81 May God bless you abundantly. 00:27:55.24\00:27:57.15 In the meantime, those of you who need us, 00:27:57.63\00:28:00.06 pick up the phone and give us a call at 00:28:00.18\00:28:01.84
