Hi friends and welcome to another edition of NEWSTART Now. 00:00:23.78\00:00:27.36 We have an interesting topic I know nobody can relate to here. 00:00:27.45\00:00:31.66 We're going to be talking to 00:00:32.03\00:00:33.06 Casey Handrop from San Diego County 00:00:33.07\00:00:36.21 and I'd like to take a look at when 00:00:36.30\00:00:37.69 Casey first arrived here at our NEWSTART program. 00:00:37.70\00:00:41.24 I used to weigh 266 lbs. 00:00:42.27\00:00:46.00 and I had a gastric bypass and I lost 00:00:46.01\00:00:49.00 a lot of weight. And then life happened, 00:00:49.03\00:00:52.15 a lot of difficult things, personal issues, and I 00:00:52.48\00:00:56.09 didn't know how to deal with those issues. 00:00:56.18\00:00:58.72 Of the 142 lbs. that I lost I've gained back 70 00:00:59.39\00:01:03.45 and I don't want to live like that. 00:01:03.75\00:01:05.48 I grab food and overeat 00:01:05.54\00:01:08.60 because I don't know how to 00:01:08.61\00:01:10.06 interact with life. I don't know how 00:01:10.07\00:01:12.75 to handle my emotions and so 00:01:12.81\00:01:15.18 overeating stuffs those emotions down. 00:01:15.27\00:01:19.06 I'm not able to be the wife I was meant to be. 00:01:19.18\00:01:23.36 I'm not able to be the teacher I was meant to be. 00:01:23.51\00:01:27.30 Essentially I'm meant to be something more 00:01:28.57\00:01:33.18 than I am right now and I need to work on that 00:01:33.19\00:01:35.84 and see where God's going to take me on that journey. 00:01:35.85\00:01:39.81 It's about the journey not necessarily the destination. 00:01:39.82\00:01:43.06 A fullness of life is why I'm here. 00:01:43.07\00:01:45.42 I want to have a full experience of life 00:01:45.57\00:01:49.42 because I can't do this again, 00:01:49.48\00:01:51.42 I have one life. And that's what I'm going to deal with. 00:01:51.60\00:01:55.66 Welcome back friends, 00:01:57.63\00:01:59.39 and as I indicated I know none of you can relate to this. 00:01:59.63\00:02:02.84 Of course we all can relate to this! We all 00:02:03.15\00:02:05.18 overeat. 00:02:05.60\00:02:06.69 Well most of us do. But in our studio, 00:02:07.63\00:02:10.06 Casey, I just want to welcome you. 00:02:10.07\00:02:12.06 God bless you for being willing to share with the folks at home, 00:02:12.18\00:02:17.12 your experience here with the NEWSTART program. 00:02:17.27\00:02:19.87 So we know you're from San Diego County, 00:02:20.39\00:02:22.81 the little town of Bonita, CA? 00:02:22.82\00:02:24.63 Yes, Bonita, CA. 00:02:24.64\00:02:25.84 Okay, why did you come here to NEWSTART, 00:02:25.85\00:02:30.36 why didn't you go 00:02:30.37\00:02:31.36 to-I think there's a place in Arizona and 00:02:31.45\00:02:33.27 I think there's one in Southern California? 00:02:33.28\00:02:35.78 We are also in close proximity to the border. 00:02:37.60\00:02:40.48 And below the border there are a 00:02:40.49\00:02:42.51 whole bunch of programs I would imagine. 00:02:42.52\00:02:45.06 My brother told me about Weimar and he's in the medical 00:02:46.06\00:02:49.78 profession and he said, 00:02:49.87\00:02:51.30 it's a good place to go, check it out. 00:02:51.31\00:02:53.48 He had had patients and he had also had 00:02:53.66\00:02:56.21 some people from church that have been here. 00:02:56.22\00:02:58.63 So I checked it out and 00:02:58.64\00:03:01.06 you know if it was something I was 00:03:01.45\00:03:03.45 doing for my children it would've happened 00:03:03.46\00:03:06.78 right away. 00:03:06.79\00:03:07.81 But somehow when you do things for yourself you don't always 00:03:08.06\00:03:11.15 jump right in there and do what you need to do 00:03:12.24\00:03:14.78 and so through email and personal contact 00:03:14.79\00:03:18.66 with the Weimar staff that was what 00:03:18.72\00:03:21.87 was a real deciding factor for me to come. 00:03:22.12\00:03:25.48 Okay, so that's how you got here. 00:03:26.33\00:03:29.48 Now have you 00:03:29.49\00:03:30.72 fulfilled your dreams while you were here? 00:03:31.09\00:03:34.48 I came to Weimar with an open mind. 00:03:35.63\00:03:38.45 I knew what I wanted to do and what I wanted to see happen 00:03:39.24\00:03:44.54 but coming with an open mind is something I don't regret because 00:03:45.36\00:03:50.06 me expectations have been surpassed. 00:03:50.07\00:03:53.15 Really, in what way? 00:03:53.21\00:03:54.45 Well I came here wanting to get control of my eating and be 00:03:54.51\00:04:00.51 eating in moderation. 00:04:00.60\00:04:02.54 Have you gotten control? 00:04:02.55\00:04:04.06 Oh, yeah. 00:04:04.07\00:04:05.75 How did that happen? 00:04:05.76\00:04:07.18 Well I thought I knew what a vegetarian was, 00:04:07.48\00:04:12.84 a vegan, I wasn't so sure. 00:04:12.85\00:04:16.06 And when they told me vegans did not eat 00:04:16.18\00:04:19.84 animal protein, meat, fish, eggs, dairy, 00:04:20.42\00:04:27.15 or milk, my questions was, what else is there? 00:04:27.16\00:04:30.42 So getting used to these things, 00:04:30.84\00:04:38.75 eating grains, whole grains, and 00:04:38.84\00:04:42.66 the source of protein being different. 00:04:44.27\00:04:46.84 The source being legumes, beans, and the grain proteins, 00:04:47.06\00:04:52.84 the weight has just been falling off. 00:04:53.39\00:04:56.24 I've lost 15 lbs. in 18 days and everytime I get on the scale 00:04:56.25\00:05:00.48 the weight is lower, which is good. 00:05:00.81\00:05:03.51 However my main issue wasn't 00:05:05.06\00:05:07.63 necessarily weight, it was getting 00:05:07.64\00:05:11.18 food back in its perspective. 00:05:12.12\00:05:14.87 And I find that I'm getting the 00:05:15.09\00:05:16.84 nutrients that my body knows it needs 00:05:16.85\00:05:20.24 from the vegan lifestyle. 00:05:20.33\00:05:24.81 Okay, now let me ask you a question. 00:05:25.12\00:05:27.15 because I know there's a lot of folks out 00:05:27.30\00:05:29.06 there that are going, wait a minute, lifestyle, 00:05:29.07\00:05:31.54 plant foods, how do you get the protein, where do you 00:05:32.81\00:05:36.18 get the energy? Let's talk about energy for a minute. 00:05:36.36\00:05:39.84 What's happened to your energy since you've been here? 00:05:40.06\00:05:42.39 When I first came here it hurt to 00:05:42.42\00:05:44.87 get up out of a chair, it hurt to walk 00:05:44.88\00:05:47.51 any length and they have this 00:05:47.60\00:05:49.54 shortest route which is like a half mile. 00:05:49.63\00:05:52.54 Well, not the shortest route. 00:05:52.63\00:05:54.06 But the shortest one I started on called the loop 00:05:54.07\00:05:57.09 was a half mile. 00:05:57.12\00:05:58.69 And I could not walk that without my hips hurting, 00:05:59.06\00:06:02.39 without my knees hurting, 00:06:02.40\00:06:04.06 it was really uncomfortable 00:06:04.30\00:06:06.87 Did you make it all the way around 00:06:07.06\00:06:08.48 the half mile loop the first time? 00:06:08.49\00:06:09.81 They have these benches fortunately. 00:06:09.82\00:06:13.21 I remember the benches! 00:06:13.69\00:06:15.27 Every time I saw a bench I 00:06:15.28\00:06:17.12 would sit just for a few minutes. 00:06:17.13\00:06:19.36 And that's one thing I learned at Weimar was that 00:06:19.37\00:06:22.06 we're conditioned to think that you have to go to 00:06:22.27\00:06:24.63 the gym and you have to workout for an hour 00:06:24.64\00:06:27.21 straight and you have to get your heart rate going. 00:06:27.24\00:06:29.81 They told me here, you can stop 00:06:30.39\00:06:33.06 you can walk for ten minutes or whatever 00:06:33.63\00:06:35.51 you're comfortable with and when it starts to hurt 00:06:35.52\00:06:37.54 sit and stop for a few minutes. 00:06:37.60\00:06:40.84 And then get back up and go some more. 00:06:41.36\00:06:44.06 So you don't have to get a full workout 00:06:44.12\00:06:47.06 in 1 or 2 hours in the afternoon or morning 00:06:47.07\00:06:51.63 you can get 10 minutes here and 15 minutes there? 00:06:51.75\00:06:54.48 Exactly, and that took away one of my excuses, 00:06:54.49\00:07:01.09 not having the time to exercise. 00:07:01.24\00:07:03.39 Okay, now you've been here 17 days, 00:07:03.40\00:07:05.48 how does that half mile loop feel to you now? 00:07:05.66\00:07:08.78 It's extremely comfortable and I walk more than one, 00:07:09.06\00:07:13.60 I'll walk two and then come back later and walk more. 00:07:14.15\00:07:18.06 On the second treadmill test that we did 00:07:18.07\00:07:22.48 they ask you, how are you feeling, 00:07:22.72\00:07:24.60 how hard are you working? And I said, this is light. 00:07:24.61\00:07:27.42 So what was the percentage of 00:07:29.39\00:07:31.72 increase on the second treadmill test? 00:07:31.73\00:07:34.72 The first time I could only go maybe 5 minutes or so, 00:07:36.12\00:07:40.45 I don't know what the time was but 00:07:40.46\00:07:42.63 I was so uncomfortable, it hurt, I wanted to stop. 00:07:43.87\00:07:47.39 The second treadmill test, and this is only 18 days max, 00:07:47.60\00:07:52.21 I could've gone farther. 00:07:53.39\00:07:55.15 Yes. 00:07:55.21\00:07:56.87 And they asked me, how hard are you working? 00:07:57.06\00:07:59.51 My body was working hard but it felt good. 00:07:59.52\00:08:02.06 My heart rate was up, 00:08:02.42\00:08:03.81 my blood pressure was doing what it was 00:08:04.06\00:08:05.78 supposed to be doing, I was getting a workout but 00:08:05.79\00:08:09.24 I wasn't huffing and puffing and 00:08:09.48\00:08:11.60 dieing and in pain on the treadmill. 00:08:11.61\00:08:14.06 It's amazing what a little bit of 00:08:14.69\00:08:17.63 effort, a little bit of time, 00:08:17.72\00:08:19.54 a lot of prayer, and a lot of encouragement can do. 00:08:19.55\00:08:22.63 Okay, we all know that NEWSTART is an acronym. 00:08:22.87\00:08:25.63 What part of the NEWSTART acronym, 00:08:26.06\00:08:29.36 would you say, is the most important part of the program? 00:08:29.37\00:08:32.45 Well, I know it's at the bottom. 00:08:33.12\00:08:35.81 But for me it's the last T of NEWSTART. 00:08:35.82\00:08:40.12 Which is trust, and it has to do with trusting in a higher power. 00:08:40.13\00:08:44.51 I'm so happy you said that! 00:08:44.54\00:08:46.72 We don't rehearse this obviously but 00:08:46.73\00:08:49.60 I'm so happy you said that because there are many of us 00:08:49.61\00:08:53.06 that need to hear 00:08:53.07\00:08:54.30 that God's hand is truly upon this place. 00:08:54.78\00:08:57.33 And as much as I say it time and time again, 00:08:57.66\00:09:00.33 we have been so blessed! 00:09:00.66\00:09:02.75 All we've got to do is follow the 00:09:03.24\00:09:05.33 example that the bible gives us. 00:09:05.34\00:09:07.30 Right. 00:09:07.31\00:09:08.57 And so, go on I'm sorry I interrupted you. 00:09:09.36\00:09:11.72 The people that I encountered at NEWSTART, everyone from 00:09:12.21\00:09:16.48 the doctors, the nurses, even down to 00:09:16.66\00:09:21.30 Dorothy who is in charge of housekeeping. 00:09:21.33\00:09:26.33 Everybody prays and 00:09:26.34\00:09:29.57 I've never had a doctor at the end of an exam ask, 00:09:29.58\00:09:34.21 can I pray with you? 00:09:34.48\00:09:35.75 Amen. 00:09:35.78\00:09:36.81 I've never had so many people you know, 00:09:36.82\00:09:40.06 from the nutrition consult, 00:09:40.07\00:09:42.06 to the exercise counsel, 00:09:42.07\00:09:44.60 just everybody, making that a way of life 00:09:46.54\00:09:50.54 as much as the nutrition, as much as the exercise, 00:09:50.57\00:09:54.72 that's a part of their living. 00:09:56.12\00:09:57.60 We're running out of time I have to cut you short. 00:09:58.06\00:10:00.84 I want to thank you for joining us on the set. 00:10:01.09\00:10:03.09 Thank you. 00:10:03.10\00:10:04.09 And folks, don't go away because 00:10:04.10\00:10:05.18 Dr. DeRose will be with us in just a moment! 00:10:05.19\00:10:08.63 Well you've done very well. 00:10:10.06\00:10:11.48 Do you have diabetes, heart disease, 00:10:18.21\00:10:20.42 high blood pressure or do you weigh too much? 00:10:20.43\00:10:23.45 Hi, My name is Doctor Ing and I'd like to tell you about 00:10:24.12\00:10:26.63 our 18 day NEWSTART lifestyle program. 00:10:26.64\00:10:29.84 It includes a comprehensive medical evaluation 00:10:30.57\00:10:33.27 with laboratory studies and a exercise stress test, 00:10:33.28\00:10:36.51 physician consolations, 00:10:36.52\00:10:39.12 culinary school, 00:10:39.13\00:10:40.66 and an opportunity to walk on beautiful trails 00:10:41.27\00:10:44.21 in the foothills of the sierras. 00:10:44.33\00:10:46.57 Your health is one of the most important things that you have. 00:10:48.15\00:10:51.18 Don't wait. Many 00:12:25.37\00:12:27.57 of the guests are just focused on the 00:12:27.75\00:12:30.09 weight if they're carrying some extra poundage. 00:12:30.10\00:12:32.78 But she was really saying, this is a bigger issue it's not 00:12:33.12\00:12:36.45 just about the weight 00:12:36.60\00:12:38.15 because she had seen what 00:12:38.27\00:12:39.54 happened with the gastric bypass. 00:12:39.55\00:12:41.24 You can have these surgical proceedures, 00:12:41.39\00:12:43.30 you can lose the weight, 00:12:43.31\00:12:44.42 but if you don't deal with the issues 00:12:44.57\00:12:46.21 that are putting the weight on like Casey's 00:12:46.22\00:12:48.06 life illustrated, 00:12:48.07\00:12:49.09 that weight can just come back 00:12:49.24\00:12:50.57 inspite of what surgical proceedures were done. 00:12:50.58\00:12:53.06 I'd like to elaborate a little on that because 00:12:53.21\00:12:55.81 I too have seen these types of proceedures. 00:12:55.84\00:12:58.60 and people go, oh wow that's all I have 00:12:58.69\00:13:00.72 to do and I'm going to lose all the weight. 00:13:00.73\00:13:02.36 But they haven't corrected the problem is what you're saying? 00:13:02.54\00:13:04.69 Yeah, that's exactly right. 00:13:04.70\00:13:06.36 So they gain after that? 00:13:06.39\00:13:08.06 Many people do and I've met many people over the years 00:13:08.09\00:13:11.57 who have had these 00:13:11.58\00:13:12.57 surgical weight loss proceedures. 00:13:12.58\00:13:14.39 They may have done great for a while 00:13:14.40\00:13:16.15 but that really only gives a person a jump start. 00:13:16.39\00:13:19.66 If they don't really take charge of their life, 00:13:19.67\00:13:22.09 most people are pretty ingenious, 00:13:22.36\00:13:24.45 the body is pretty ingenious, 00:13:24.46\00:13:26.24 and many people find ways to put 00:13:26.36\00:13:29.36 the weight right back on. And then the 00:13:29.37\00:13:31.54 flip side, the real tragedy is 00:13:31.66\00:13:33.69 the people who continue to lose weight 00:13:33.84\00:13:36.42 after some of these surgeries and just continue and basically 00:13:36.60\00:13:40.63 end up dieing 00:13:40.78\00:13:42.42 because their body just couldn't handle 00:13:42.54\00:13:46.39 the nature of the very aggressive 00:13:46.51\00:13:48.84 surgery that may have been done. 00:13:48.85\00:13:50.39 So you get both extremes but much more commonly 00:13:50.40\00:13:53.57 we see people who put the weight right back on. 00:13:53.60\00:13:56.72 Now doctor you were present during the treadmill test that 00:13:57.15\00:14:01.48 Casey had? 00:14:01.49\00:14:02.51 Yeah, both of them. 00:14:02.52\00:14:03.51 You were actually at both of them? 00:14:03.52\00:14:05.27 Right. 00:14:05.28\00:14:06.27 The first one, she was hurting, 00:14:06.30\00:14:08.33 she was in pain, tell us about the second one. 00:14:08.34\00:14:11.27 Could she just run off the top? 00:14:11.42\00:14:14.06 Well it was remarkable and it 00:14:14.36\00:14:16.84 didn't just sink in at the treadmill because we do 00:14:16.87\00:14:19.09 treadmills toward the 00:14:19.10\00:14:20.21 beginning and end of the program. 00:14:20.22\00:14:21.84 But one day Casey came in and she'd 00:14:22.18\00:14:25.12 been talking with me for the first 00:14:25.13\00:14:27.12 week or so about 00:14:27.24\00:14:28.51 how tough the program was and 00:14:28.75\00:14:31.06 she was talking about, 00:14:31.15\00:14:32.48 how can I do this when I go back home? 00:14:32.49\00:14:34.66 But there came a day when she said, you know what? 00:14:34.87\00:14:37.36 I walked that half mile or that mile and I didn't hurt! 00:14:37.66\00:14:41.15 I wasn't in pain at all! 00:14:41.33\00:14:42.72 So when she realized that by listening to her body, 00:14:43.27\00:14:47.15 by not overdoing it, by 00:14:47.42\00:14:49.18 going at a pace that was right for her, 00:14:49.33\00:14:51.30 not feeling like she had to keep up with anyone, 00:14:51.31\00:14:53.60 that was really the secret 00:14:54.06\00:14:55.66 plus the entire lifestyle approach with 00:14:55.69\00:14:58.36 the hydrotherapy, the message, and the 00:14:58.37\00:15:01.06 vegan diet which reduces inflammation in the body. 00:15:01.12\00:15:04.18 All these things working together, 00:15:04.27\00:15:05.69 the trust in divine power, and God's blessing on it. 00:15:05.70\00:15:08.54 But when that really clicked 00:15:08.63\00:15:10.51 the treadmill just confirmed what she had been experiencing 00:15:10.69\00:15:14.63 for the last week or so of the program. 00:15:14.66\00:15:16.60 And that was that she could exercise 00:15:16.61\00:15:18.57 and she could do it and feel good. 00:15:18.72\00:15:20.57 Don't you just love it when someone comes to you and says, 00:15:21.06\00:15:23.84 I got it, I got it, I feel good! 00:15:24.06\00:15:26.18 Yeah, it's tremendous especially when you see some 00:15:26.19\00:15:28.87 of the people that come through the program here. 00:15:28.88\00:15:31.54 If they're not on death's door they may feel that way. 00:15:32.24\00:15:35.27 Yes. 00:15:35.28\00:15:36.27 And to just see these turn 00:15:36.30\00:15:38.15 arounds where people actually see 00:15:38.16\00:15:39.81 that a healthy lifestyle can be enjoyable. And that's the big 00:15:39.82\00:15:42.69 gap that a lot of people have. They hear about Weimar 00:15:43.09\00:15:46.48 and they say, boy this seems like a strict program, 00:15:46.51\00:15:48.54 it may work but I don't see how I could ever do that. 00:15:48.55\00:15:51.15 So we've got these mental barriers. We think, 00:15:51.42\00:15:54.06 well I could never be on that strict a 00:15:54.07\00:15:55.78 program it would make my life miserable. 00:15:55.79\00:15:57.69 But when people get on a program like this and they see 00:15:57.81\00:16:00.48 how good they can feel and how much better they can do 00:16:00.49\00:16:03.06 it just changes their whole perspective and they say, 00:16:03.18\00:16:05.45 why didn't I come sooner? 00:16:05.46\00:16:06.51 And I got a taste of that, I'll testify here right now 00:16:07.75\00:16:11.06 that I questioned it. I didn't know if I could do 00:16:11.30\00:16:15.81 what I've now done for 5 years. 00:16:16.06\00:16:18.63 And my whole life has changed! 00:16:18.69\00:16:22.39 All the weight came off and I, 00:16:22.54\00:16:25.06 well I don't want to get into my 00:16:25.12\00:16:26.27 testimony but I feel much better. 00:16:26.28\00:16:28.06 Oh yeah, that's powerful. 00:16:28.07\00:16:29.06 It is so powerful! 00:16:29.07\00:16:30.81 But what about the people at home doctor? 00:16:31.36\00:16:34.06 I'm really concerned 00:16:34.07\00:16:35.60 we've been told there are 25 00:16:36.06\00:16:38.48 million diabetics around the country. 00:16:38.49\00:16:41.66 And maybe as many as 200 million that are obese. 00:16:42.15\00:16:46.06 How can we help the people at home, 00:16:46.48\00:16:48.42 what can we tell them? 00:16:48.43\00:16:49.57 Probably the most important message I 00:16:49.84\00:16:52.06 can give you if you're tuning in today 00:16:52.07\00:16:53.54 and you're struggling with some of these things, 00:16:53.55\00:16:55.27 is that there really is hope. 00:16:55.28\00:16:56.48 God has a program and it's mapped out in the bible and 00:16:57.51\00:17:00.72 it's not just a theoretical program, 00:17:00.73\00:17:02.63 it's a program we 00:17:02.64\00:17:03.72 put to work every day here at the Weimar NEWSTART program. 00:17:03.73\00:17:06.87 And whether you show your face here on our campus 00:17:07.18\00:17:10.33 and let us have the privilege of working with you 00:17:10.34\00:17:12.24 or whether you just get excited about 00:17:12.33\00:17:13.84 this from programs like NEWSTART Now 00:17:13.85\00:17:16.45 we know this makes a difference. It's doable, it's attainable, 00:17:16.60\00:17:20.75 God never asks us to do anything but that 00:17:21.06\00:17:23.48 which He's fully comitted to help us achieve. 00:17:23.49\00:17:25.33 I think that's the most 00:17:25.34\00:17:26.36 important message I can give, Ron. 00:17:26.37\00:17:28.09 That was powerful, I'm so glad to here you say that. 00:17:28.18\00:17:31.33 And I know the viewers are happy that you're commenting, 00:17:31.66\00:17:35.15 helping, and encouraging, 00:17:35.16\00:17:36.84 because one of the first things, 00:17:37.24\00:17:39.06 when my wife and I went to 3ABN 00:17:39.24\00:17:41.57 and Shelley Quinn asked my wife, 00:17:41.78\00:17:44.36 what did you see happening to Ron? 00:17:44.54\00:17:46.36 And my wife with a tear in her eye said, 00:17:46.66\00:17:49.06 I saw that he had hope. 00:17:49.27\00:17:51.36 And that's a real challenge because many people, 00:17:51.81\00:17:54.60 even if they here about the lifestyle message, 00:17:54.61\00:17:57.09 they don't have hope because they think, 00:17:57.45\00:17:59.72 I could never live that way. 00:17:59.73\00:18:01.15 Or they think, it wouldn't be enjoyable, 00:18:01.24\00:18:03.09 my life would be miserable, I'd rather die 00:18:03.10\00:18:05.06 in a year or two 00:18:05.09\00:18:06.21 than prolong my life another 20 00:18:06.30\00:18:07.57 years and be miserable the whole time 00:18:07.58\00:18:09.33 because I'm eating foods I don't like 00:18:09.34\00:18:10.87 and I'm having to exercise which I hate. 00:18:10.88\00:18:12.57 But like you see in Casey's situation, 00:18:12.78\00:18:15.45 things click when you get on this kind of 00:18:15.63\00:18:17.54 program, the Lord starts blessing it, 00:18:17.55\00:18:19.42 you don't want to go back to the 00:18:19.57\00:18:21.06 old lifestyle. You're not missing 00:18:21.07\00:18:22.57 the old way of life because you just feel so much better. 00:18:22.63\00:18:25.09 Right, that's so true! 00:18:25.10\00:18:26.78 Now I want to ask you, when we have guests here 00:18:27.39\00:18:30.75 I know that you interview them, 00:18:30.87\00:18:33.36 or physicals, whatever you want to call them, 00:18:33.66\00:18:36.06 don't you walk with your guest? 00:18:36.30\00:18:38.42 Or do you call them patient, I'm not sure? 00:18:38.54\00:18:41.06 Well, in the program overall we're speaking about guests 00:18:41.15\00:18:44.69 but in the medical setting, of course, they're patients. 00:18:44.70\00:18:47.21 And we have a pretty unique program here. 00:18:47.48\00:18:50.87 It's more of a family atmosphere 00:18:51.42\00:18:53.36 where it's common to see the doctors either 00:18:53.63\00:18:57.09 walking with the patients, or eating with them, or 00:18:57.10\00:18:59.63 socializing in various contexts. Sometimes 00:18:59.69\00:19:03.66 someone will hear that I'm headed to 00:19:03.69\00:19:06.75 worship services somehere and they'll come along. 00:19:06.76\00:19:09.12 It's more like a family atmosphere, now 00:19:10.21\00:19:12.21 Dr. Lukens and Dr. Ing are full 00:19:12.30\00:19:14.12 time with the program so the guests 00:19:14.13\00:19:15.63 end up seeing them more than me 00:19:15.64\00:19:17.27 because I also teach in the college. 00:19:17.28\00:19:19.21 So, I'm running in different circles but all of us really 00:19:20.09\00:19:24.09 are there interacting with the patients on a variety levels. 00:19:24.24\00:19:27.45 What are you doing when you walk with a guest? I mean, 00:19:27.51\00:19:30.24 tell us, are you observing the stride 00:19:30.57\00:19:34.30 or listening to the breath? 00:19:34.39\00:19:35.66 You know, the interesting thing Ron, whether it's 00:19:35.69\00:19:38.60 walking, worshiping together, 00:19:38.61\00:19:41.45 or whether it's eating a meal together, 00:19:41.46\00:19:43.63 whatever the setting is, whether you just see someone 00:19:44.18\00:19:47.06 walking back and forth from the 00:19:47.18\00:19:50.06 dining facilities which is a very short 00:19:50.12\00:19:52.81 little walk across a 00:19:52.84\00:19:55.27 setting over to the lodge, 00:19:55.39\00:19:57.51 wherever it is we're interacting on a 00:19:58.15\00:20:01.09 different level. In the medical office 00:20:01.10\00:20:03.63 it's a very constrained environment. 00:20:03.78\00:20:06.60 Many times we'll find people's blood pressure 00:20:06.81\00:20:08.75 rises just because they're in the doctor's office. 00:20:08.76\00:20:10.81 But in these informal settings 00:20:11.18\00:20:12.60 we often get to know people better 00:20:12.61\00:20:15.12 and sometimes what's really on their heart, 00:20:15.13\00:20:16.84 what they're really dealing with, 00:20:16.85\00:20:18.24 comes out in a way that it wouldn't come out 00:20:18.33\00:20:20.72 in the conventional medical office setting. 00:20:20.73\00:20:23.63 I know I used to have and probably still do, 00:20:24.24\00:20:27.36 what is referred to as white coat syndrome. 00:20:27.51\00:20:30.72 I don't care, my blood pressure, I'd be totally relaxed, 00:20:31.21\00:20:34.18 but put a cuff on me and my blood pressure would go up. 00:20:34.27\00:20:36.87 So the doctor said, you gotta get a machine. 00:20:37.18\00:20:39.51 And I started checking my own blood pressure and it was fine. 00:20:39.63\00:20:42.63 So I wanted to bring that up. 00:20:42.87\00:20:45.27 So doctor, any last words of encouragement? 00:20:45.54\00:20:49.18 Yeah, I would say if you're 00:20:50.00\00:20:51.72 challenged in any lifestyle area, 00:20:51.73\00:20:54.27 natural therapies, 00:20:54.45\00:20:56.72 lifestyle therapies with God's 00:20:56.81\00:20:58.69 blessing is a powerful alternative. 00:20:58.70\00:21:00.48 Just don't write it off because you think 00:21:00.49\00:21:01.75 it's too difficult. There is hope for you! 00:21:01.76\00:21:04.24 I want to thank you for joining us. 00:21:05.69\00:21:07.36 It's always good to be with you, Ron. 00:21:07.39\00:21:09.21 And folks thank you for joining us! 00:21:09.66\00:21:11.27 But don't go away, we have an 00:21:11.28\00:21:13.12 important tip for you, following this! 00:21:13.13\00:21:15.39 Modern views of evolution stem all the way back 00:21:18.06\00:21:20.51 to theories developed in the mid-1800s. 00:21:20.54\00:21:23.06 Out of the same time period came ideas that shape 00:21:23.60\00:21:27.06 our educational system today. 00:21:27.07\00:21:29.18 The Common School Movement, for example, 00:21:29.72\00:21:32.09 saw schools more like a factory, 00:21:32.21\00:21:34.12 with students blindly memorizing instruction 00:21:34.13\00:21:36.78 rather than thinking for themselves. 00:21:36.81\00:21:38.78 Their curriculum was rigid and theoretical. 00:21:39.33\00:21:41.78 Instead of being flexible and practical, 00:21:41.79\00:21:44.63 it was designed to conform the individual 00:21:44.78\00:21:47.36 into a specific ideological mold 00:21:47.37\00:21:50.21 that fit the needs of an old industrial era 00:21:50.54\00:21:53.06 long since passed. 00:21:53.07\00:21:54.42 Just like our view of creation in six literal days, 00:21:55.69\00:21:59.12 we believe the Bible contains an educational blueprint 00:21:59.13\00:22:03.18 radically different from the one we see now. 00:22:03.45\00:22:05.81 Hello and welcome to NEWSTART At Home. 00:22:31.84\00:22:33.33 I'm your host, Don Mackintosh we're glad you're with us. 00:22:33.34\00:22:35.57 And we're also glad that we have Dr. 00:22:36.33\00:22:38.36 Doug Plata with us today. Welcome doctor! 00:22:38.37\00:22:40.60 You are a specialist in family 00:22:41.45\00:22:43.78 practice but also preventive medicine? 00:22:43.79\00:22:45.57 That's right. 00:22:45.58\00:22:46.57 And as we were talking you said one of the most important 00:22:46.60\00:22:49.09 things for people to do is have a consistant exercise program. 00:22:49.10\00:22:52.78 Why is that, how can we get it started, 00:22:53.21\00:22:55.06 how can we make it stick? 00:22:55.07\00:22:56.15 Well, there's so many benefits to exercise, 00:22:56.27\00:22:59.15 it's one of the most 00:22:59.16\00:23:00.21 powerful medicines that we have. 00:23:00.54\00:23:02.51 And it's important for heart health and 00:23:02.52\00:23:05.15 so many different things, even depression. 00:23:05.16\00:23:07.09 So, and the other questions were? 00:23:07.78\00:23:09.72 How do we get it started and how do we make it stick? 00:23:09.73\00:23:11.66 I think with most people 00:23:11.87\00:23:13.84 it's common sense we all need to exercise on a regular basis. 00:23:14.18\00:23:18.06 Especially your aerobic exercise, walking, 00:23:18.07\00:23:20.36 running, cycling, these sorts of things. 00:23:20.37\00:23:22.33 Well how to get started, 00:23:24.75\00:23:26.48 what I would recommend is for people to try 00:23:27.78\00:23:30.06 to find something they're going to stick with. 00:23:30.07\00:23:33.12 And for me that is something I find enjoyable. 00:23:33.13\00:23:35.60 There's nothing like, 00:23:36.06\00:23:37.06 oh I have to get up and I have to 00:23:37.07\00:23:38.72 walk or jog or something like this. 00:23:38.84\00:23:40.54 And if you don't like doing that it's going to be difficult 00:23:40.55\00:23:42.81 to really keep doing that 00:23:42.82\00:23:44.69 month after month, year after year, 00:23:44.78\00:23:46.63 like we need to do. So, 00:23:46.64\00:23:48.45 what I recommend is make it enjoyable 00:23:48.66\00:23:52.30 so it's something you look forward to. 00:23:52.31\00:23:54.33 What do you personally look forward to in terms of exercise? 00:23:55.18\00:23:58.06 Well I found it and for me it's cycling. 00:23:58.07\00:24:02.06 Now, being in preventive medecine I actually 00:24:02.07\00:24:04.45 looked in the literature and asked, how safe is this? 00:24:04.46\00:24:06.42 And unfortunately cycling is not one of the safest 00:24:07.06\00:24:09.24 things but for me it's one of the most enjoyable. 00:24:09.25\00:24:11.57 So I did buy a bicycle 00:24:12.12\00:24:14.60 and I got a route on the street that is safe 00:24:14.84\00:24:19.30 very little traffic. 00:24:19.39\00:24:20.69 When I cycle I'm very cautious about it because 00:24:21.06\00:24:23.66 I'm out there to get exercise and for my health 00:24:23.67\00:24:26.66 and obviously an injury is not at all healthful. 00:24:26.69\00:24:29.21 Right, so walking? 00:24:29.24\00:24:30.84 Walking is one of the best if it's something you enjoy doing. 00:24:31.48\00:24:35.81 Walking is relatively safe. 00:24:36.06\00:24:38.75 It's not pounding, it's not damaging to the knees. 00:24:38.76\00:24:42.21 And it's something anybody can do. 00:24:42.51\00:24:44.84 What do you need to walk? You need a pair of shoes. 00:24:44.85\00:24:47.78 And a safe place. 00:24:48.33\00:24:49.33 My problem, just a little confession here, 00:24:51.45\00:24:53.57 is when I was growing up 00:24:53.58\00:24:55.06 most of my exercise was 00:24:55.72\00:24:57.15 related to sports or activities where 00:24:57.16\00:24:59.81 there were other people involved. 00:25:00.15\00:25:01.33 Right. 00:25:01.34\00:25:02.33 And then we you get to a certain 00:25:02.34\00:25:04.27 stage in life sometimes you don't have, 00:25:04.28\00:25:06.45 I'm not saying I don't have friends, 00:25:07.42\00:25:09.06 but you don't have that same setup. 00:25:09.21\00:25:11.54 Right. 00:25:11.55\00:25:12.54 So what would you say to people like me? 00:25:12.66\00:25:15.75 Like you, sure. 00:25:16.09\00:25:17.09 I think the social dimension to exercise 00:25:18.51\00:25:21.15 can be very important as a motivating factor. 00:25:21.16\00:25:24.36 If you know that somebody is 00:25:24.57\00:25:26.21 expecting to meet you at 8 in the morning 00:25:26.22\00:25:28.42 are you going to get out of bed and go? Yes you will. 00:25:28.60\00:25:31.24 Whereas if you don't have an exercise partner. 00:25:31.39\00:25:33.51 So with a good friend you can have 00:25:33.60\00:25:36.15 a lot of fun talking with them and 00:25:36.16\00:25:37.84 I think that's a very important thing. 00:25:38.12\00:25:40.06 Studies actually show if you have an exercise partner 00:25:40.18\00:25:42.21 you're more likely to be consistant with that exercise. 00:25:42.22\00:25:45.12 What about a dog? 00:25:45.13\00:25:46.12 I was going to mention a dog. 00:25:46.13\00:25:47.39 A dog is great, I think it's also a wonderful thing 00:25:49.12\00:25:53.30 and dogs need to be walked so you feel an 00:25:53.63\00:25:56.78 obligation to make sure you walk the dog. 00:25:56.79\00:25:59.21 That's right. 00:25:59.22\00:26:00.27 Just be careful. I used to jog with a dog and it would 00:26:00.28\00:26:03.72 like to run into me and of course that was very dangerous. 00:26:03.73\00:26:06.33 Yeah, I remember working in the ER once and this lady had a huge 00:26:06.45\00:26:10.36 great dane 00:26:10.60\00:26:14.06 and I would say make sure you have a short leash. 00:26:14.12\00:26:17.60 This dog had a big long leash and the 00:26:17.61\00:26:19.75 lady didn't see the dog start to run 00:26:19.76\00:26:22.18 and when she turned around it had 00:26:22.54\00:26:23.84 already built up steam and 00:26:23.85\00:26:26.06 she actually fell over and it drug her down the road. 00:26:26.33\00:26:28.27 Who's walking who? 00:26:29.12\00:26:30.12 Exactly, and it's not funny at all she was really injured. 00:26:30.13\00:26:33.60 So just be careful with dogs. 00:26:33.72\00:26:35.75 So, start it and then stick with it 00:26:36.06\00:26:38.15 with the social things and maybe a pet. 00:26:38.16\00:26:41.27 Anything else? 00:26:41.28\00:26:42.27 Yeah, let me mention something about safety. 00:26:42.28\00:26:44.42 And that is that some people live in a 00:26:45.36\00:26:48.24 neighborhood where maybe they don't feel safe 00:26:48.25\00:26:50.36 walking around the neighborhood. 00:26:51.81\00:26:53.12 And in that sort of situation if you're 00:26:53.66\00:26:56.06 walking with a partner you'll feel safer. 00:26:56.07\00:26:58.36 But often times at malls there's 00:26:58.69\00:27:02.51 walking groups that you can find out about. 00:27:02.54\00:27:06.66 And if it's raining or something like that again, 00:27:07.09\00:27:11.24 malls are a good place to go. 00:27:11.25\00:27:12.54 Pools, swimming? 00:27:12.55\00:27:13.57 Swimming pools, another good form of exercise, 00:27:13.66\00:27:16.24 not so good in building up strong 00:27:16.25\00:27:18.06 bones but aerobically very good. 00:27:18.07\00:27:20.12 We've been talking to Dr. Doug Plata about exercise. 00:27:20.75\00:27:24.09 You need to start and stick with it. 00:27:24.15\00:27:26.51 And we have some very 00:27:26.52\00:27:27.60 practical ideas on how to do that now. 00:27:27.61\00:27:29.06 Thank you for joining us at NEWSTART 00:27:29.57\00:27:31.09 At Home but get out of your home and 00:27:31.10\00:27:32.72 exercise today! 00:27:32.73\00:27:34.06 And thank you doctor for being with us. 00:27:34.39\00:27:36.33 You can find more information 00:27:36.34\00:27:37.45 about this and other subjects at: 00:27:37.46\00:27:38.87 Tell your friends about it and we're glad you joined us today. 00:27:43.15\00:27:45.42 Well friends that's it for today. 00:27:52.24\00:27:53.87 Thank you for joining us! 00:27:53.88\00:27:55.42 And we just want to give all praise to our lord and savior. 00:27:55.69\00:27:58.81 In the mean tiem pick up the phone and give us a call at: 00:27:59.42\00:28:02.09
