00:23 Hi friends, and welcome to another addition of NEWSTART Now
00:27 In our studio with us today we have Amy Foll, 00:30 all the way from Chattanooga Tennessee. 00:33 We interview guests where they have 15 or 20 00:39 different medications. We have people with diabetes, 00:42 high blood pressure, neuropathy, cardio this and cardio that. 00:47 Some disease we can't even identify. 00:50 In this case, she has come here to prevent disease. 00:55 Let's look at the clip of when she first arrived. 00:58 At work being a nurse, I was under tremendous 01:01 amounts of stress. I would work 12 hour shifts 01:04 I would come home 8, 8:30 at night. 01:06 Be famished from a whole day of working, 01:08 not drinking enough water, stayed dehydrated. 01:11 Then you start getting headaches, 01:12 which I was experiencing. 01:14 Then I was eating supper 8, 8:30 at night. 01:17 Than I just started packing on the pounds. 01:19 I was a size 8 when I graduated from nursing school, 01:22 and then it just kinda slowly progressed. 01:24 I finally realized that I've got to take charge. 01:28 I really felt convicted from God 01:30 that I really needed to take my health 01:32 and make it a top priority, 01:33 so that I could effectively witness to others. 01:35 If I'm not living the lifestyle 01:38 and what I know is right, 01:40 Then how can I effectively witness 01:42 and share that with others? 01:44 Especially being a nurse. 01:45 What I would like to accomplish is, 01:46 basically get and stay on a regular 01:49 exercise program. I've exercised a lot in the past, 01:53 but I really need to stay on a consistent level. 01:56 I would like to be walking 5 or 6 miles a day or more. 02:01 Yesterday I walked 3 miles and I felt great, 02:03 I also started taking out suppers yesterday. 02:08 I thought that I was going to be famished 02:10 and that it was going to be awful 02:12 but it went really well and I feel great today. 02:16 I just plan on cutting down on the total calories 02:20 that I've been taking in, and just doing much 02:22 more exercising. I'm so exited because of the support 02:24 that I feel here and the christian atmosphere. 02:27 and just the love 02:28 that is shown by all of the staff members. 02:33 Welcome back friends, and in our studio 02:35 Amy how are you? -good 02:36 It is so good to see you. 02:39 You've got just a beautiful smile. 02:41 -That clip almost made me cry a little bit. 02:44 -Me too 02:46 Well, people are wondering, 02:48 she's young, and attractive. 02:50 She has a good job and so on, 02:53 but behind the scenes, there are other things going on. 02:56 I'd like to adress that for a little bit. 02:58 We know you came here to loose weight, 03:00 to get a grip on your food intake 03:03 so you don't end up with diabetes 03:05 or cardiovascular disease. -Correct 03:08 What else is going on? Did you sell your house? 03:14 Oh! Well actually it worked out through 03:17 divine intervention for me to sell my house. 03:20 I put it on the market and it had been a year 03:23 and it hadn't sold. 03:25 God sold the house this past May. 03:28 I was so thrilled because I had sold 03:30 all of the furniture in my house. 03:31 I was getting really excited because 03:33 An opportunity has opened for me to go to 03:35 Familia Feliz in Bolivia to work in the orphanage 03:37 and school there because they need a nurse. 03:40 I prayed a lot about it and I said Lord, 03:42 If you want me to do this, 03:43 If you want me to go on this mission trip. 03:45 Actually a change in life because I was going 03:49 to moving there. Not just a mission trip. 03:50 Commit 5-10 years. -Wow 03:52 please you are going to have to sell the house. 03:55 Some friend said to just rent it out but I said no. 03:58 That is my choice. 04:00 I had a friend that told me about a realtor 04:02 friend that he knew. So I changed realtors 04:04 and within 3 months the house sold. 04:06 -Wow, so you got the right realtor, 04:08 You sold your house, 04:09 You are using your proceeds 04:11 to pay off your bills to go to Belize. 04:13 -Bolivia -Bolivia excuse me 04:16 Now, I heard a rumor and 04:18 It's all over campus now. 04:21 That you were playing basketball the other day? 04:24 -Yeah Did you teach young guys 04:26 a thing or too? 04:28 -Well I don't know about that. 04:29 What happened was last Sunday evening 04:31 I saw one of the college students 04:34 shooting hoops by himself. So I thought. 04:36 "Hey I'll go play too, that sounds like fun." 04:39 So I asked if I could play. 04:41 We went back and forth shooting hoops. 04:44 Than 6 other guys came. 04:46 They wanted to play some basketball 04:49 so I thought my time was finished. 04:51 so I'll just graciously leave. 04:53 Well they had only 7 guys and they needed one more. 04:56 I played and had a great time 04:59 and once they realized that I could make a few shots, 05:02 they started passing the ball to me more. 05:03 -What teem won? 05:05 -Well they won. 05:07 -But you got 8 points I know. 05:09 -right, the first game we lost by about 7 points 05:12 because we played to 14 or 15. 05:15 Than the second game we only lost by about 2 or 3 points 05:17 so we did a lot better. 05:18 It was a lot of fun. 05:20 -Here is a gal that comes to learn the NEWSTART program 05:22 That is teaching our college students how to play basketball. 05:26 How about that folks. 05:28 -Well I don't know if I'd go that far but it was great! 05:29 I just had to add that in. 05:32 I'm sure everybody learned something. 05:34 So while you've been here I know that 05:37 you look so vivacious and full of energy, 05:42 were you always like this? 05:45 -I did have a lot of energy before 05:47 but I was wearying down. 05:48 I feel so much better now. 05:49 I feel revived spiritually, emotionally, physically 05:52 and it has been a huge blessing. 05:56 -What do you attribute this too? 05:58 Well I tell you what. 06:00 I'm eating a lot bigger breakfasts now, 06:02 which is making me feel so much better. 06:04 I've continued cutting out the suppers. 06:06 I think one time I had some fruit 06:08 because I was hungry. 06:09 but I tell what, I feel so much better. 06:11 I've lost almost 10 pounds. -Wow 06:16 I'm on my way and I'm feeling so much better. 06:19 So much energy, and yeah. 06:22 Also walking 6 miles a day 06:24 I've gotten up to my goal. 06:25 Yesterday Linda and I 06:27 walked frontier trail and back, 06:29 and up cardiac hill 06:30 -Alright 06:31 Now about the program here. 06:34 What is it or was it, about the program that you liked the most. 06:39 Well what I really need is, 06:40 I really need to be more disciplined 06:41 and on a consistent schedule, 06:43 because at work, I work 12 hour shifts 06:45 and than the days off I would sleep in 06:47 I wasn't on a consistant schedule. 06:49 I really needed to be more disciplined 06:52 in my routine and that has been a huge blessing. 06:54 I feel so much better. I feel better when I wake 06:57 up in the morning. 06:58 I am going to continue this. 07:00 It has really changed me for the better. 07:04 Now what can you tell our younger audience, 07:08 that they can perhaps gain by attending 07:12 the NEWSTART program? 07:17 Basically, 07:19 The best thing that I could say is that, 07:22 Being raised an Adventist, 07:24 I knew most of the health principles when I came. 07:28 I wasn't living them. 07:30 There is a lot of peer pressure 07:31 in a lot of churches and social circles. 07:35 to eat cheese pizzas and a lot of different things. 07:38 You feel almost like a outcast in some circles 07:41 if you become a vegan 07:42 because there is so much peer pressure. 07:44 Obviously not here at NEWSTART 07:46 because the lifestyle is so great. 07:48 but in some areas. So I just think that, 07:53 We should focus on what God wants us to do. 07:55 God doesn't want to take anything away 07:57 from us that is for our best interest. 07:59 -Yes He wants to help us be healthy, 08:01 happy, and whole in Him. 08:04 I think that some young people could greatly 08:07 benefit from the program. 08:09 -That's awesome. Now your doctor 08:11 is Dr. Lukens I understand. -Yes 08:14 We are going to be interviewing him in just a little bit. 08:17 Tell us about your visits with Dr. Lukens. 08:20 How many visits did you have? 08:23 I think I've had a total of 6 visits, 2 per week. 08:27 -Those are official visits. Yes 08:29 Were you able to have breakfast or lunch with him? 08:33 -Oh yes, he comes to the cafeteria. 08:35 Did you get a chance to play basketball with him? 08:38 Last night he invited me to go to one of the gymnasiums, 08:41 -See the word got around. 08:43 to play basketball but he was 08:46 a little concerned because he didn't 08:47 want to take me away from one of the lectures 08:49 that Dr. Ing was presenting. 08:50 So I stayed for the lecture. 08:53 He told me that it was a lot of fun last night. 08:55 There was a lot of people there so he said 08:56 maybe I would have sat on the bench for a little while. 08:59 -He plays with a lot of local physicians 09:01 and young men from the local colleges. 09:04 They have a weekly tournament 09:07 where they play together. 09:09 He has asked me to go but that's out of my league. 09:11 Those guys just running up and down the court, 09:14 which I could probably use. 09:15 -Maybe it was best I didn't go. 09:17 -So what are you going to do when you get home? 09:20 What is going to change? 09:22 How are you going to attack, 09:24 and I use that word loosely, 09:26 your new lifestyle. 09:28 We only have a few seconds left. 09:30 -First off I'm going to make a list, 09:32 things that I need to get at the grocery store. 09:35 I need to get a nonstick pan, a wok, 09:37 I also need to get a bread maker. 09:40 I am going to focus on cooking my own meals 09:46 and taking them to work because you go to potlucks, 09:48 work, cafeteria, and different things. 09:50 You don't know what is in a lot of these dishes. 09:52 That is what I'm going to do. 09:56 I am really focusing on the nutrition aspect 09:59 and also continuing no suppers. 10:02 -Amy thank you so much for coming on the studio, 10:05 Thank You -God bless you 10:07 in your work in Bolivia -Yes thank you 10:09 Friends don't go away because 10:10 right after this important message, 10:12 Dr. Lukens will be with us. 10:16 Well, you've done very well. 10:24 Do you have diabetes, 10:25 heart disease, high blood pressure, 10:28 or do you weigh too much? 10:30 Hi, my name is Dr. Ing, and I'd like to tell you 10:33 about our 18-day NEWSTART lifestyle program. 10:37 It includes a comprehensive medical 10:39 evaluation with laboratories and an 10:41 exercise stress test, 10:43 physician consultations, 10:46 culinary school, 10:47 and an opportunity to walk on beautiful 10:50 trails in the foothills of the Sierras. 10:54 Your health is one of the most 10:56 important things that you have. Don't wait. 10:58 Give us a call. 11:03 Or visit our website. 11:22 Welcome back friends. In our studio, 11:24 Dr. Lukens. -Happy to be back again. 11:27 What a grip, what a grip 11:31 -You're always very charitable to people aren't you. 11:35 Well I hope so. -I just saw what Amy said 11:39 Did you? and yeah you're very charitable. 11:43 Well let's talk about Amy. 11:44 That's what we are here to do right? 11:46 -Yeah 11:47 Amy is very inspiring 11:50 she has a wonderful way about herself. 11:54 She kept the guests laughing 11:57 for the last 2 weeks. 11:58 She is very comical in a lot of ways. 12:01 -There were some people here in this group that, 12:04 you could just sit and listen to them laugh. 12:07 It was that entertaining. 12:09 One of the other guests just exploded when she laughed. 12:14 Laughter is really a good medicine 12:17 Isn't that what proverbs says 12:18 "A merry heart doeth good like a medicine." 12:21 Amen. You know it's wonderful to have an interview with you, 12:25 Where we don't have to 12:26 or you don't have to because your the doctor, 12:29 Dissect all of these problems etc. etc. 12:33 We have a young lady who has come to our program. 12:37 To learn a new lifestyle to prevent 12:40 from having to come here someday, 12:43 rather than go into surgery or such 12:46 -Exactly 12:47 What do we do with these folks doctor? 12:50 Are there any differences in the way 12:52 our treatments go for them? 12:54 Well, let me veer off of that for just a second. 12:59 You said that she is a happy person. 13:02 If she were to come to your bed, 13:04 She works in ICU some of the time. 13:07 She is a travel nurse. 13:10 Can you think of any time when 13:11 that might be a little stressful? 13:13 -Oh yeah! In fact we had one of them here. 13:15 -She can go anywhere and be there for 13:19 2 weeks or 6 weeks or whatever. 13:22 How would you like to do that? 13:24 -I don't think so. I don't think I'd be very good at it. 13:27 -but she is young and she can do that. 13:30 -Are you implying that I'm not? 13:32 No no you're good. -You didn't say that 13:40 You realize that if you were lying there in bed, 13:42 say you were in a automobile accident 13:45 or you just had a MRI or something like that, 13:47 and a nurse comes up to you with her demeanor 13:51 Would that make you feel better? 13:52 -Oh absolutely it would make me feel better. 13:55 She has that look of confidence about her 13:58 because she knows what she is suppose to do. 14:00 -Yeah 14:02 and this is the person 14:05 that is not only 14:07 good at what she does, 14:09 and knowledgeable 14:12 but she is also going to dedicate some years of her life, 14:18 to helping people in South America. 14:20 -She has committed 5-10 years of her life. 14:23 Yeah but when you think of that, 14:25 when you think of the implications 14:28 and stuff like that, 14:29 people would look at her and say, 14:31 Do you think you are doing the right thing Amy? 14:34 -Right 14:35 What did Jesus do for us? -Yeah 14:38 When she gets back she will be so glad she went. 14:41 You heard how she felt God was leading her. 14:45 I'm sure He is. 14:47 She put out the fleece like she said. 14:49 Here she is going to go. 14:51 When she comes back 5, 10 years 14:53 or however long God has her there for. 14:56 Maybe after a year something will come up but 14:58 Thank of the joy and happiness 15:00 that will be in her life. 15:02 Sometimes we don't realize how 15:06 important this part of it is for us in our health. 15:11 The problem is, for the people out there listening, 15:15 they might think that the cholesterol number, 15:18 sugar number, blood pressure number, 15:22 and the waist measurement are the 15:24 most important part of their health. 15:27 The most important part of anyone's health, 15:30 is their relationship with Jesus. 15:32 -Amen 15:33 -And why is that? 15:35 Because we as Americans and all over the world, 15:38 and I've been to a few places, 15:39 We all need rest and peace in our heart. 15:44 That is one of the things that Amy 15:46 increased while she was here. 15:47 She had time to strengthen her relationship with the Lord. 15:51 and so she did that. 15:53 At some point doctor, and maybe this is the point. 15:57 I would like to elaborate a little more because 16:00 we see people come through the program, 16:02 we've talked about this, we wonder, 16:04 how is this possible? How did they get well? 16:08 Doctors on the outside couldn't even find out 16:10 what was wrong with them. We couldn't either. 16:13 But yet they came here and got well. 16:15 We know that it's God's hand on Weimar. 16:18 I just know that in my heart. 16:20 God brought me here 16:22 to find a way back home. 16:26 -All through the Bible we here about the great physician. 16:31 It is wonderful that we understand 16:34 that God has a way 16:36 that is different that man's way. 16:39 He didn't just say you guys just figure it out, 16:43 He gave us some pretty specific instructions. 16:46 We need to figure it out and do it. 16:51 I don't want to sound negative or anything, 16:54 but there are a lot of people 16:56 that make New Year's resolutions 17:00 There are even jokes made about New Year's resolutions 17:04 like, do you expect that you are 17:06 going keep that resolution for 24 hours? 17:09 I don't think God wants us to make New Year's resolutions. 17:14 Do you know what I think he wants us to do? 17:16 -What's that 17:17 I think he wants us to get on our knees 17:20 and humbly ask him to go before the father and 17:26 ask for a special blessing. 17:31 Ask that He will give us a promise. 17:36 that will be His eternal promise to us. 17:41 That we might have the victory 17:42 and that's how we receive it. 17:44 We receive it as a gift. 17:45 Not by standing up and saying, 17:47 I'm going to do this even if it kills me. 17:52 Now it is good to confess 17:56 and make announcements an stuff like that 17:58 Always say, 18:00 By God's Grace or 18:02 This is my request that I make of the Lord. 18:07 I think the reason that we fail so much 18:11 is because the adversary comes 18:12 and takes us and just rubs our face down and just grinds 18:17 us with it and when we are overwhelmed with guilt, 18:20 than the battle is all over with. 18:23 Now back to your question. What was it? 18:25 I'd rather keep talking about this 18:29 -This is something that has been weighing on my heart for 18:32 a while because for example tonight, 18:35 we are going to have a banquet, 18:37 and almost everyone who as come through here, 18:40 at that banquet the Holy Sprit it there. 18:43 We can sense his presence. 18:45 There is a unity almost like an upper room experience. 18:48 -Yes 18:50 When the people go from that room, 18:53 they are determined that for the rest of their life, 18:55 they are going to be 100% perfect and do everything right. 18:59 If that's the way it was, 19:02 and Amy and I talked about that this morning. 19:04 If that's the way it was, 19:06 and say you were 8 months of age 19:10 or 18 months when you started walking, 19:12 what if the first step you took you fell, 19:15 which your probably did, everybody does, 19:19 and you said to yourself, this doesn't work 19:23 I'm not going to try that again. 19:25 How many people would be walking? 19:28 We would all be in wheelchairs or whatever. 19:31 Ok we'll go back to the medical now. 19:34 She didn't tell you all of the different things but, 19:36 There is a lot of heart problems and diabetes 19:41 in her family. 19:44 and she might have said that on her first interview 19:47 Her mother has been able to control it 19:49 after going to one of our reversing diabetes programs. 19:53 She has been able to control it with diet, exercise, 19:57 and lifestyle. Her father died when he was 52. 20:02 It was a heart condition. 20:03 They don't really know exactly why he had that. 20:06 but there are others in her family that have had 20:08 bypass surgery and coronary artery disease. 20:11 Here is somebody that is medical enough, 20:16 intelligent enough and dedicated enough 20:20 to donating her body as a living sacrifice 20:24 to the Lord and He is going to help her. 20:26 -Amen 20:27 He is going to help her and she is going to reach her goals. 20:30 When she gets to heaven, 20:32 it is going to be more than she ever realized. 20:36 -Praise God. 20:38 Doctor I feel your sincerity 20:40 whenever we talk like this, 20:43 I just want to lift up the people who are watching 20:46 and my prayer right now, 20:49 Is that there are so many out there 20:51 that we hear from constantly. 20:53 They write letters to me, 20:54 we get phone calls, 20:56 I just want them to be lifted up to God 20:59 and under His wing and under His care. 21:01 -Always 21:03 That whatever their needs are. They are fulfilled. 21:06 -I'm so glad that you are helping with the followup. 21:08 That means so much to a person. 21:11 -Yes and it's my pleasure. 21:13 -and to here your testimony 21:15 Doctor I want to thank you for coming to out program. 21:18 -It is always my pleasure. 21:20 God bless you -Thank you 21:21 Friends thank you for joining us but don't go away 21:24 We have a tip for you right now. 21:41 Hello and welcome to NEWSTART At Home, 21:43 we are glad that you are with us today 21:44 and we are also glad that Dr. Doug Plata is with us 21:47 Welcome doctor. -Thank you, appreciate it. 21:49 You're an urgent care physician 21:51 and you also do occupational medicine 21:52 In other words, a lot of people see you 21:56 when they are having an issue that is painful 22:00 and something that they can't deal with at home. 22:02 You are also a family practice physician 22:04 in preventive medicine as well. 22:06 We are talking in this little series about 22:08 foreign bodies in the eye. 22:11 We already talk about dust, 22:14 and wood chips and different things like that. 22:17 You shared a technique of taking that 22:19 eyelid over the top of the other one 22:22 as well as the idea of flushing the eye out. 22:25 This time we want to talk about if they get a metal speck 22:29 something in their eye like that. 22:30 -Maybe they are out in the shop and grinding on something 22:33 and something gets into the eye. 22:35 Again the most important thing to do is try to irrigate it out. 22:39 I think the key thing with metals is, 22:42 they can potentially develop and spread on the surface eye 22:47 and develop what is called a rust ring. 22:49 That would require to actually remove it 22:52 something a opthamologist might want to do. 22:55 Sort of a different category and the key there is, 22:59 to try to get to a doctor right away 23:02 so that it doesn't cause this rust ring. 23:05 Does the rust start to develop almost immediately? 23:08 Very shortly. I've noticed that I can take out 23:12 the metal foreign body 23:15 even after 3 or 4 hours but sometimes 23:18 little portions of it will still remain behind, 23:21 and that's a risk. 23:22 So can they just call a opthamologist if they have one, 23:25 but what if they don't? Do they need a referral 23:27 from someone like you? 23:28 Yes sometimes, it all depends on insurance plans of of course. 23:31 I would say it's probably best to go to a 23:35 urgent care to be able to be seen right away. 23:37 or if you can get into your primary care physician, 23:39 family physician, to be able to see it immediately. 23:42 They can deal with it as well. 23:44 So number 1 you try to flush it out with water, 23:48 number 2 you try to get that foreign body out yourself, 23:51 if you can. -right 23:52 and number 3 you head to your office 23:54 or someone that has a slit lamp 23:56 that can really look closely. -Yeah 23:57 and than go from there. 24:01 Let's talk about another thing 24:03 that sometimes happens to the eyes. 24:05 How about a person that is helping another person weld. 24:09 When I was in the ER we saw a lot of that. 24:11 What do you do if that happens? 24:14 -Are you talking about the flash burns? 24:17 or are you talking about things in the eye. 24:19 -Yeah the flash burns 24:22 It is fairly limited. Not too many people 24:24 are dealing with this but, 24:26 The bright light can cause an inflammation 24:30 of the eye, the iris. 24:32 That is something that is going to need intensive treatment. 24:37 Oftentimes medicines and an opthamologist 24:40 would work on that. 24:42 -Is that something where they would need to get in right away? 24:45 -I would say the sooner the better. 24:49 We probably want to also mention 24:52 about acids and substances like that. 24:54 -Yeah let's talk about that. 24:56 So let's say there is a chemical or 24:57 you're washing something and 24:59 a cleaning fluid gets into your eye. 25:01 -Clorox would be a common but a worrisome one 25:06 This is something that again, 25:09 as with many things that get in the eye, 25:11 the key is to irrigate the eye. 25:13 Especially if it is a chemical substance like that, 25:17 you really need to irrigate it for a long time. 25:21 15-30 minutes would be good. 25:23 After that go ahead and have it seen immediately. 25:26 Even if you have irrigated it well. 25:29 -Let's say it's my 1 year old 25:30 and he is screaming bloody murder. 25:32 I feel so bad that he is crying. -Right 25:36 Do I keep irrigating regardless of him screaming? 25:39 By all means. It's tough but you've go to do it. 25:43 If you have to hold him down, force open the eye 25:46 to pour it in. 25:47 Do what it takes because a kids vision, 25:50 vision is one of the most important things 25:53 that we have been given. We want to do what we can 25:54 to protect it. -If the mom or dad is saying no 25:57 please don't do that, you reason with them 26:01 but you keep giving them fluid. -Yeah 26:04 You told me something else. You said the eye is 26:07 one of the most vascular areas. 26:09 It is one of the fastest healing. 26:10 It is like 3 layers and in about 3 days, 26:13 abrasions, scratches on the surface 26:16 of the eye clear up. It is pretty remarkable. 26:20 That's resilient as they say. 26:22 We've been talking with Dr. Doug Plata 26:24 and we've been takeling about foreign bodies in the eye, 26:27 Some very useful information, very practical. 26:29 We hope that you enjoy this information here on: 26:34 There is many different topics that you can access. 26:37 Tell your friends about us, 26:39 and tell them about the practical 26:41 information that you are receiving here. 26:42 Thanks for being with us doctor -My pleasure 26:44 Thank you for being with us as well 26:46 at NEWSTART At Home. 26:55 Modern views of evolution stem all the way back 26:57 to theories developed in the mid-1800s. 27:01 Out of the same time period came ideas that shape 27:04 our educational system today. 27:07 The Common School Movement, for example, 27:09 saw schools more like a factory, 27:11 with students blindly memorizing instruction 27:14 rather than thinking for themselves. 27:17 Their curriculum was rigid and theoretical. 27:19 Instead of being flexible and practical, 27:22 it was designed to conform the individual 27:25 into a specific ideological mold 27:27 that fit the needs of an old industrial era 27:30 long since passed. 27:33 Just like our view of creation in six literal days, 27:36 we believe the Bible contains an educational blueprint 27:40 radically different from the one we see now. 27:56 Well folks, that's it for today. 27:58 Thank you for joining us 27:59 In the mean time pick up the phone 28:01 and give us a call at: 28:06 God bless you and have a great day! |
