In other words they were 00:12:16.03\00:12:19.48 way to high, they were out of control. 00:12:19.49\00:12:22.12 So he was willing to fast, 00:12:22.48\00:12:26.60 go without eating for three days 00:12:26.61\00:12:29.39 to get started. 00:12:29.40\00:12:30.81 And during this time we'd monitor his blood 00:12:30.87\00:12:33.12 sugars to make sure they didn't go to high 00:12:33.13\00:12:36.15 and it was very interesting. Even without eating any food 00:12:36.30\00:12:39.57 his blood sugars were still high, 00:12:39.75\00:12:41.51 but not so high that we had to give him any medication. 00:12:41.60\00:12:44.48 And then he resumed eating and then we had to 00:12:45.72\00:12:49.15 give him a little bit of insulin. But now he's 00:12:49.48\00:12:52.48 taking 100 units a day which has knocked off 200 units a day. 00:12:52.66\00:12:57.72 He's better. Also, initially when he came 00:12:58.48\00:13:01.39 he was uncomfortable because 00:13:01.69\00:13:04.45 his hands were numb and tingling and they hurt 00:13:04.66\00:13:08.45 and also his feet, 00:13:08.57\00:13:11.42 his legs and his feet were totally numb. 00:13:12.15\00:13:16.66 Yeah, he was on morphine I understad. 00:13:16.67\00:13:18.00 Yeah, he was on morphine 00:13:18.01\00:13:19.00 because of the pain in his hands. 00:13:19.01\00:13:20.39 Oh, wow. 00:13:20.40\00:13:21.42 And after he'd been here for a week he said, 00:13:21.45\00:13:22.75 I want to stop that. 00:13:22.78\00:13:26.15 Fine if you want to stop that we'd be happy to work with you. 00:13:26.16\00:13:29.06 He had a tough few days but he said he'd done it 00:13:29.36\00:13:31.45 before and he wanted to get off of some of those medicines. 00:13:31.46\00:13:34.30 Is this something that we've done 00:13:34.31\00:13:36.45 continuosly here at the NEWSTART program, 00:13:36.46\00:13:39.48 assist people in getting off of medications? 00:13:39.63\00:13:42.15 We've had people want to get off of 00:13:42.16\00:13:43.57 medications and if they're willing to that 00:13:43.58\00:13:46.09 we're willing to work with them. 00:13:46.36\00:13:48.24 So he's done very, very well, 00:13:48.54\00:13:50.21 he's stopped that medication, and he's lost 20 lbs. 00:13:51.09\00:13:54.48 One of the fascinating things about his blood work was 00:13:54.81\00:13:59.15 that his triglycerides were really, very high. 00:13:59.30\00:14:01.81 I'm not sure if he told you the number but I think it was 00:14:01.82\00:14:04.21 876 which is quite high. 00:14:04.57\00:14:08.30 They're still high now but they came down to 461 00:14:08.39\00:14:13.75 which 415 points lower than what they were. 00:14:13.78\00:14:16.30 And that's even with stopping one of his 00:14:16.72\00:14:18.48 medications that help lower his triglycerides. 00:14:18.49\00:14:21.60 So his diet and lifestyle have made a big impact. 00:14:21.69\00:14:25.42 And now he says that his feet which 00:14:25.72\00:14:28.30 weren't hurting before are starting to hurt. 00:14:28.31\00:14:30.30 Which means he's getting feeling back in his feet. 00:14:30.87\00:14:33.78 And the pain in the feeling he has is not that painful. 00:14:34.06\00:14:39.48 So he's getting feeling back in his feet. 00:14:39.87\00:14:41.81 So it's a welcome pain. 00:14:41.82\00:14:44.72 Yeah, it's uncomfortable but something he can tolerate 00:14:44.73\00:14:49.54 and now he has feeling in his feet. 00:14:49.69\00:14:51.87 And his blood sugar is likewise as 00:14:52.54\00:14:55.42 we've worked with him to manage his 00:14:55.43\00:14:58.27 insulin and his eating 00:14:58.57\00:15:00.48 because he's primarily just eating 2 meals a day. 00:15:00.49\00:15:03.42 His blood sugars are now within a normal range 00:15:04.03\00:15:08.45 with the medication. 00:15:08.46\00:15:09.72 So he's using a short acting insulin and 00:15:10.51\00:15:12.45 a long acting insulin and doing very well. 00:15:12.46\00:15:15.03 Now when he leaves here, 00:15:15.27\00:15:16.69 will you, or will he be doing follow up, 00:15:16.70\00:15:20.69 as in calling you and asking for advice, 00:15:21.24\00:15:24.21 or will you be working with his doctor, 00:15:24.22\00:15:27.06 how does that all play out? 00:15:27.21\00:15:28.42 Well I certainly hope he'll contact me 00:15:28.45\00:15:32.21 because on my final instructions 00:15:32.39\00:15:34.42 I told him what I wanted him to do. 00:15:34.43\00:15:36.51 Whole plant foods eaten whole, 00:15:38.42\00:15:40.48 take some B12 everyday, 00:15:40.49\00:15:42.27 walk at least 3 to 4 miles a day, 00:15:42.42\00:15:44.75 and I gave him a goal for losing weight. 00:15:45.03\00:15:47.45 Lose about 5 pounds a month until he gets down to 00:15:47.63\00:15:50.87 the weight we talked about. 00:15:51.27\00:15:52.84 He, and May, who is my wife who is also a dietitian, 00:15:53.72\00:15:57.75 the three of us together decided on a weight goal for him 00:16:00.39\00:16:04.30 and working at about 5 lbs. 00:16:04.45\00:16:05.72 a month he should be able to get there. 00:16:05.73\00:16:07.66 And since he has email he's meant to report to me 00:16:07.84\00:16:11.24 at least once a month about his progress, and blood sugars, 00:16:11.42\00:16:15.84 and he knows how to contact me because he has my 00:16:16.39\00:16:18.51 home telephone number, 00:16:18.84\00:16:20.27 actually he has my cell phone number. 00:16:20.28\00:16:22.45 Because that's how I've been tracking and following him here. 00:16:23.42\00:16:26.75 When he takes his blood sugar he 00:16:27.06\00:16:29.57 reports to me and says, what should we do? 00:16:29.58\00:16:32.30 So now he's got a handle on it and knows what he needs to do. 00:16:32.39\00:16:35.39 And so it's not unusual for a 00:16:36.24\00:16:40.48 doctor here at the NEWSTART program 00:16:40.49\00:16:42.72 to follow up on guests once they leave? 00:16:43.03\00:16:45.27 That's right, if the guest wants to have someone to talk to 00:16:45.66\00:16:50.30 all of my patients get my home telephone number. 00:16:50.48\00:16:52.81 That's awesome. 00:16:52.82\00:16:53.81 And they can call me anytime of the day or night. 00:16:53.82\00:16:55.81 I know that to be true, 00:16:56.00\00:16:57.84 because when I first met you 7 or 8 00:16:58.03\00:17:00.78 years ago it was on the phone 00:17:00.79\00:17:03.15 and you returned a phone call from me 00:17:03.39\00:17:06.33 and it was about ten o'clock at night when we talked. 00:17:06.45\00:17:09.57 Sometimes I don't get to make my phone 00:17:09.69\00:17:11.51 calls until then because that's when I get home. 00:17:11.52\00:17:13.69 So do you think that Dan is... 00:17:14.36\00:17:16.66 You know, we've done this 00:17:16.67\00:17:18.03 program for about a year now doctor. 00:17:18.04\00:17:20.30 and we've seen all these 00:17:20.72\00:17:22.42 wonderful changes that people are going through, 00:17:22.43\00:17:25.21 is it typical in your experience? 00:17:25.51\00:17:27.87 It seems to be in mine now, 00:17:27.88\00:17:29.78 that whoever comes here gets healed. 00:17:30.27\00:17:32.60 Well they certainly get much better, 00:17:32.87\00:17:35.45 especially those with diabetes. 00:17:35.46\00:17:37.00 The numbers that we use as far as people with type 2 diabetes, 00:17:37.36\00:17:41.78 of which Dan was an example, I had another individual, 00:17:42.12\00:17:45.15 and this other individual had had diabetes for 3 years, and 00:17:45.24\00:17:49.12 she came in on her medication, and 00:17:49.30\00:17:51.24 she stopped her medication, it was an oral medicine, 00:17:51.57\00:17:54.69 and her blood sugars are 00:17:55.18\00:17:56.18 normal now without any medications. 00:17:56.19\00:17:57.51 So, 4 out of 10, or 40% 00:17:57.52\00:18:00.42 of those with type 2 diabetes usually 00:18:00.69\00:18:03.24 we find that their blood sugars will be 00:18:03.57\00:18:06.18 normal without having to use medication. 00:18:06.48\00:18:09.00 And those who still have to use medication, 00:18:09.03\00:18:11.45 Dan is an example of that group, 00:18:11.46\00:18:13.27 have much better control with far less medication. 00:18:13.54\00:18:16.27 And he's proof of that as well. 00:18:16.36\00:18:18.06 He's also proof of the thing we've discovered, which is 00:18:18.39\00:18:23.09 with the NEWSTART approach to diabetes 00:18:23.39\00:18:27.39 people with diabetic neuropathy, which is what he had, 00:18:27.78\00:18:33.21 with the burning, numbness, tingling, and so on, 00:18:33.33\00:18:36.81 we get a significant and dramatic improvement. 00:18:37.45\00:18:40.30 So it's been very worthwhile 00:18:40.45\00:18:42.03 for him to go through the program 00:18:42.04\00:18:44.66 and he's very pleased and happy, 00:18:44.67\00:18:46.18 with what he's been through and what he's 00:18:46.42\00:18:50.69 accomplished and how he's feeling right now. 00:18:50.70\00:18:53.09 So for our viewers now, there seems to be 00:18:53.72\00:19:00.15 a lifestyle that we teach here. 00:19:01.09\00:19:03.30 Some people can't get here for whatever those reasons are. 00:19:03.75\00:19:07.75 Is there something that you can tell our friends 00:19:08.33\00:19:12.33 and our viewing audience all over the world here 00:19:12.54\00:19:15.33 what they could possibly do to help change their lives. 00:19:15.51\00:19:20.84 Well I think one of the really important things in 00:19:21.33\00:19:24.09 helping to improve your health is the food that you eat 00:19:24.10\00:19:27.03 and we've discovered through experience and also 00:19:27.42\00:19:30.54 by reading the medical literature 00:19:30.66\00:19:32.39 that the best diet is the 00:19:32.60\00:19:34.72 original one given to man in Genesis 1:29. 00:19:34.73\00:19:38.12 And that ends up being plant foods. 00:19:38.33\00:19:40.30 So the the guideline we use for food is, 00:19:40.54\00:19:43.36 whole plant foods eaten whole. 00:19:43.48\00:19:46.18 So can you break that down a little bit? 00:19:46.60\00:19:48.30 Whole plant foods eaten whole, 00:19:49.48\00:19:51.24 that means we should be eating a plant based diet, 00:19:52.00\00:19:55.84 Right. 00:19:55.85\00:19:56.84 in their original form as they come out of the garden? 00:19:56.85\00:20:00.18 Well sometimes you've got to, like your wheat 00:20:00.39\00:20:05.30 you've got to process the wheat a little bit, 00:20:05.42\00:20:09.24 eat brown rice rather than white rice, 00:20:09.25\00:20:12.36 whole wheat flour rather than the white enriched flour. 00:20:12.57\00:20:18.69 If it has a mother or a face you don't want to eat it. 00:20:19.12\00:20:22.03 And another thing to remember, 00:20:22.63\00:20:23.69 your stomach is not a graveyard for dead animals. 00:20:23.70\00:20:26.27 Those are two important points, if you combine 00:20:27.75\00:20:30.36 those with whole plant foods you should do quite well. 00:20:30.37\00:20:32.78 So, if it has a mother or a face don't eat it. 00:20:32.84\00:20:36.03 That's right. 00:20:36.04\00:20:37.03 And whole plant foods eaten whole. 00:20:37.04\00:20:38.78 That means when you go into the market 00:20:38.81\00:20:41.72 and you go into the produce section 00:20:41.87\00:20:44.06 you can eat anything in the produce section, pretty much. 00:20:44.21\00:20:47.24 Yeah, all your vegetables and things of 00:20:47.63\00:20:50.03 course and then your whole grain cereals. 00:20:50.04\00:20:52.69 White rice is not what you want, brown rice is. 00:20:53.87\00:20:57.21 Instead of white flour, even enriched white flour, 00:20:58.03\00:21:00.30 you'd want to eat whole wheat flour. 00:21:00.31\00:21:02.21 Well Dr. Ing I want to thank you 00:21:03.18\00:21:05.24 because I know you're a busy guy 00:21:05.25\00:21:07.03 running this program here, 00:21:07.30\00:21:09.15 I just want to thank you for coming on the set. 00:21:09.16\00:21:11.51 And God bless you and your work! 00:21:11.54\00:21:13.18 It's a pleasure, thank you, Ron. 00:21:13.21\00:21:14.63 And friends I want to thank you, but don't go away, 00:21:14.69\00:21:16.87 we have an important message for you, right now! 00:21:16.88\00:21:19.54 Hello, welcome to NEWSTART At Home. 00:21:34.84\00:21:36.36 We're glad you've joined us today. 00:21:36.37\00:21:37.63 And we're also glad that Dr. Doug Plata is with us. 00:21:37.64\00:21:40.24 He is an urgent care specialist and trained in 00:21:40.63\00:21:43.87 family medicine and preventive medicine. 00:21:44.27\00:21:46.36 Which means you're just very practical. 00:21:46.48\00:21:48.12 Thank you, I hope so. 00:21:48.33\00:21:49.57 And you probably see a lot of people 00:21:49.60\00:21:51.33 that are just kind of axious about things. 00:21:51.34\00:21:54.03 And there's nothing that causes more 00:21:54.36\00:21:56.30 anxiousness than maybe a foreign body in the eye, 00:21:56.31\00:21:58.78 or in the nose! We're gonna talk 00:21:59.15\00:22:00.84 about foreign bodies in the nose and ears! 00:22:00.85\00:22:03.09 Right, some of the most interesting cases I've seen! 00:22:03.10\00:22:06.30 I'm sure you've seen them to. 00:22:06.31\00:22:08.09 You always hear those stories 00:22:10.57\00:22:11.78 about a kid putting a bean in his nose, 00:22:11.79\00:22:15.18 or whatever. What are the things you see? 00:22:15.19\00:22:17.81 Rasins, peanuts, I don't know why, 00:22:18.09\00:22:20.27 but they just do it. Kids, what can you do? 00:22:20.28\00:22:22.87 And who's more troubled about it, 00:22:23.54\00:22:27.33 the child, or the mother? 00:22:27.34\00:22:28.63 Oh, by far in ways, the parent who comes in. 00:22:28.64\00:22:31.60 Yeah, very distraught. 00:22:31.63\00:22:33.27 So, probably at first you're like a 00:22:33.57\00:22:36.39 psychologist saying, it's going to be okay. 00:22:36.40\00:22:38.51 Exactly. 00:22:38.52\00:22:39.51 And you kind of do a little soothing. 00:22:39.52\00:22:42.00 But let's get to that. What should 00:22:42.12\00:22:44.87 we start with the nose, or the ears? 00:22:44.88\00:22:46.51 Honestly I consider them about the same. 00:22:47.33\00:22:49.48 So, let's start with the nose. 00:22:49.49\00:22:50.66 Okay, very well. 00:22:50.67\00:22:51.66 Again the most common thing I see are 00:22:52.03\00:22:55.69 little children who don't know any better and 00:22:55.70\00:22:58.39 the parents will often times say 00:22:58.54\00:22:59.81 that they just watch the kids grab 00:22:59.82\00:23:01.36 it and stick it in the nose. 00:23:01.37\00:23:02.87 It's something they enjoy doing I guess. 00:23:02.88\00:23:05.06 And again, most commonly 00:23:05.42\00:23:08.42 rasins, kids just love to do that, 00:23:08.51\00:23:10.84 peanuts, these sorts of things. 00:23:10.85\00:23:13.00 So what do you do? 00:23:13.03\00:23:15.00 Have they tried blowing the nose? What do you do? 00:23:17.72\00:23:19.84 Right, right. 00:23:19.87\00:23:21.00 Often times the mother is in a panic. 00:23:21.51\00:23:24.03 She may have tried to get it out, 00:23:24.04\00:23:26.84 she may not have. Regardless, 00:23:26.85\00:23:29.06 in most cases it's fairly straight forward, 00:23:29.45\00:23:32.27 we just have some forcepts we can just reach in and get it. 00:23:32.36\00:23:35.69 It depends how far back the kid has pushed the object. 00:23:36.03\00:23:40.57 We can use different techniques. Sometimes 00:23:40.75\00:23:44.45 getting something past it, and pulling it out like that. 00:23:44.48\00:23:47.84 So, is there anything they can do at home 00:23:48.03\00:23:51.03 before they see you, what should 00:23:51.04\00:23:52.81 they try before they get there? 00:23:52.82\00:23:54.45 What I find often times is it's not too 00:23:54.66\00:23:57.21 far in and they can just kind of push it out. 00:23:57.22\00:24:00.78 And that often times works. 00:24:01.00\00:24:03.09 I would not recommend this next thing for 00:24:03.45\00:24:06.57 them to do at home because it's very dangerous 00:24:06.58\00:24:08.45 but sometimes we just take a Q-tip and put some 00:24:08.48\00:24:11.36 super glue on there and attatch it 00:24:11.63\00:24:13.30 on and then pull it out like that. 00:24:13.31\00:24:14.84 But I definitely would not recommend that. That's just 00:24:15.00\00:24:16.87 asking for trouble if it's not being done by a professional. 00:24:16.88\00:24:19.33 That's true because they end up 00:24:19.36\00:24:21.48 with a Q-tip glued inside their nose. 00:24:21.49\00:24:24.03 Which would probably not be good. 00:24:24.45\00:24:25.72 Exactly. 00:24:25.73\00:24:26.75 Okay so, anything else about the nose before we move to the ear? 00:24:26.78\00:24:30.33 Let's move on to the ear 00:24:31.45\00:24:32.48 because there was something I've seen 00:24:32.49\00:24:34.42 that's common in the ear and that's when people are sleeping 00:24:34.43\00:24:37.36 and they must really be in a deep sleep because while 00:24:38.06\00:24:41.15 they're sleeping an insect actually crawls into the ear. 00:24:41.16\00:24:43.78 This is a common thing like a cockroach or like a... 00:24:43.84\00:24:45.84 Yeah! 00:24:45.85\00:24:46.84 And so, of course depending on if it's a 00:24:46.85\00:24:48.84 black widow spider you're in deep trouble but 00:24:48.85\00:24:51.09 But I haven't seen that yet. 00:24:52.21\00:24:53.21 Right. 00:24:53.22\00:24:54.21 So what do you do in that particular case? 00:24:54.22\00:24:56.03 What can they do at home, anything? 00:24:56.09\00:24:58.00 Well, quite honestly I find that people don't 00:24:58.27\00:25:01.63 stay at home very long because usually 00:25:02.36\00:25:03.66 they're on the road and they're flying. 00:25:03.67\00:25:05.30 because it's gotta be one of the most disturbing 00:25:05.42\00:25:07.06 things to have an insect crawling around in your ear. 00:25:07.07\00:25:10.06 And often times there's nothing, 00:25:10.24\00:25:12.15 you try to get it out and the insect tries to stay in, 00:25:12.24\00:25:14.57 it's trying to get away from you. 00:25:14.58\00:25:16.00 So it's very difficult to get out. 00:25:16.01\00:25:17.39 So if you shine a light it freaks out? 00:25:17.40\00:25:20.51 Well actually sometimes they'll actually say, 00:25:20.60\00:25:22.81 oh, that's the way out and they actually follow it. 00:25:22.82\00:25:25.18 So, yeah. 00:25:25.19\00:25:26.18 You can try that, if that doesn't work... 00:25:26.19\00:25:28.27 But usually if it's not working and they 00:25:29.03\00:25:31.24 come to you what do you do when they get there? 00:25:31.25\00:25:33.12 First of all what I like to do is kill the poor insect. 00:25:33.13\00:25:36.69 Because it' going to be a lot easier 00:25:37.48\00:25:39.21 if it's not struggling to get out. So, 00:25:39.22\00:25:40.87 we can use alcohol and kill it that way or spray it and 00:25:41.12\00:25:44.87 Rubbing alcohol? 00:25:45.54\00:25:46.54 Yeah, yeah. 00:25:46.55\00:25:47.54 So they can do that at home? 00:25:47.55\00:25:48.54 That's really true, they can do that at home. 00:25:48.55\00:25:50.00 And that should be perfectly safe. 00:25:50.30\00:25:51.48 And then we go in with sort of needle nosed little clamps 00:25:51.49\00:25:55.06 and reach in and grab it and sometimes it comes out in parts. 00:25:55.27\00:25:58.78 It's the reality. 00:25:59.72\00:26:01.30 You might be able to do one other technique 00:26:02.12\00:26:05.39 I've seen and that's when you take a syringe and wash it out. 00:26:05.40\00:26:09.21 Yeah, that can work as well. 00:26:09.22\00:26:11.24 Could they try that at home? 00:26:11.33\00:26:12.39 If they have got a syringe. 00:26:12.60\00:26:14.75 Like maybe a bulb syringe or something? 00:26:15.00\00:26:16.78 Yeah. 00:26:16.79\00:26:17.84 We've been talking to Dr. Doug Plata 00:26:18.15\00:26:19.48 about foreign bodies in the ears. 00:26:19.49\00:26:21.42 Very practical information for you. 00:26:21.45\00:26:24.66 I think there's all kinds of 00:26:25.12\00:26:26.48 information like this on our website at, 00:26:26.49\00:26:29.36 Thank you Dr. Plata. This was very 00:26:33.87\00:26:35.45 practical and might seem like a small thing to you 00:26:35.46\00:26:37.75 but a small thing in the ear is a big thing, isn't it? 00:26:37.76\00:26:39.63 That's right. 00:26:39.64\00:26:40.63 So we're glad that you've joined us 00:26:40.64\00:26:41.63 here at NEWSTART At Home 00:26:41.64\00:26:43.12 and thank you again for being with us. 00:26:43.13\00:26:45.42 Modern views of evolution stem all the way back 00:26:53.54\00:26:56.15 to theories developed in the mid-1800s. 00:26:56.18\00:26:58.57 Out of the same time period came ideas that shape 00:26:59.24\00:27:02.54 our educational system today. 00:27:02.57\00:27:04.72 The Common School Movement, for example, 00:27:05.36\00:27:07.63 saw schools more like a factory, 00:27:08.09\00:27:10.00 with students blindly memorizing instruction 00:27:10.01\00:27:12.66 rather than thinking for themselves. 00:27:12.69\00:27:14.66 Their curriculum was rigid and theoretical. 00:27:15.21\00:27:17.66 Instead of being flexible and practical, 00:27:17.67\00:27:20.51 it was designed to conform the individual 00:27:20.66\00:27:23.24 into a specific ideological mold 00:27:23.25\00:27:25.69 that fit the needs of an old industrial era 00:27:25.70\00:27:28.48 long since passed. 00:27:28.49\00:27:29.87 Just like our view of creation in six literal days, 00:27:31.24\00:27:34.57 we believe the Bible contains an educational blueprint 00:27:34.58\00:27:38.57 radically different from the one we see now. 00:27:38.84\00:27:41.30 Well folks that's it for today. Thank you for joining us. 00:27:54.66\00:27:58.18 In the mean time pick up the phone and give us a call at, 00:27:58.19\00:28:00.30 God bless you, have a great day! 00:28:04.21\00:28:05.63
