Altogether I took about 21 pills a day, 00:00:57.70\00:01:02.24 of prescription medication. 00:01:02.51\00:01:04.66 It was 16 different prescriptions. 00:01:04.67\00:01:07.30 that I was taking 00:01:07.31\00:01:09.12 I want to accomplish getting off of 00:01:10.63\00:01:13.24 the medication and feeling good again. 00:01:13.25\00:01:16.06 I have felt bad for a really long time, I'm a nurse 00:01:17.21\00:01:21.18 RN, and I haven't been able to work for 10 months due to this. 00:01:21.48\00:01:25.39 It has been a roller-coaster ride. 00:01:25.84\00:01:28.72 I hope to get off of the 00:01:30.39\00:01:32.21 medication and get my family back. 00:01:32.22\00:01:33.78 and get me back. 00:01:33.79\00:01:35.09 Welcome back friends, and here is Lori 00:01:39.12\00:01:41.57 How are you Lori -good how are you 00:01:41.58\00:01:43.24 Good to see you. How did you get on these medications? 00:01:50.48\00:01:55.87 You said you were taking 00:01:56.36\00:01:57.42 21 different medications. 00:01:57.43\00:01:59.18 or 16, 21 different times of the day? 00:01:59.84\00:02:03.42 Actually it started about 16 00:02:06.84\00:02:10.63 years ago when I started my first one. 00:02:10.64\00:02:13.45 I stayed along with that for quite some 00:02:14.06\00:02:16.72 time and I would have breakthrough depression. 00:02:16.73\00:02:19.87 Each time I would have breakthrough depression, 00:02:20.21\00:02:23.24 they would add another pill. 00:02:23.25\00:02:25.27 About 5 years ago I started 00:02:31.30\00:02:34.51 having some problems with my back 00:02:34.52\00:02:37.06 and so I started taking the 00:02:37.81\00:02:40.51 pain pills and the muscle relaxers 00:02:40.52\00:02:43.12 and mentally I started going downhill 00:02:46.24\00:02:49.75 It was tearing my family apart because of the medication. 00:02:51.09\00:02:55.48 December of 08, I was diagnosed with Narcolepsy 00:02:56.24\00:03:01.51 So that is when they added the uppers and the downers. 00:03:01.52\00:03:05.51 You wake up in the morning and take 00:03:05.52\00:03:06.81 something and take something to go to bed. 00:03:06.82\00:03:09.48 It just built up over time -yeah yeah 00:03:13.36\00:03:17.48 So now 16 years has passed, 00:03:17.75\00:03:22.54 and you decide to come to the NEWSTART program here at Weimar. 00:03:22.55\00:03:27.12 Tell us a little bit about your 00:03:27.72\00:03:29.42 experience since you have been here. 00:03:29.43\00:03:31.30 Have you noticed any changes? 00:03:31.66\00:03:34.09 I have noticed changes with me. 00:03:35.39\00:03:37.63 I am feeling a lot better. 00:03:38.63\00:03:40.60 It is easier to get up in the mornings. 00:03:42.33\00:03:44.06 I feel so much better without the 00:03:45.06\00:03:47.42 side effects of the medications. 00:03:47.43\00:03:49.69 Also my head if clearer. -really? 00:03:50.66\00:03:53.36 Now what do you attribute this to? 00:03:54.45\00:03:56.24 Were you still taking the medications 00:03:56.25\00:03:58.12 when you got here. 00:03:58.13\00:04:01.18 -I was taking them all when I got here 00:04:01.75\00:04:03.48 Are you still taking all of them? 00:04:03.49\00:04:05.45 -No sir. 00:04:05.46\00:04:06.48 Oh you're not. 00:04:06.49\00:04:07.51 Well how many of them have you eliminated? 00:04:07.52\00:04:09.33 I am taking only 3 prescriptions now. 00:04:09.60\00:04:13.42 -Oh my goodness! 00:04:13.43\00:04:15.42 Well that's fabulous. 00:04:15.78\00:04:19.09 -Yes 00:04:19.10\00:04:20.09 That's wonderful. 00:04:20.10\00:04:21.24 and your head has cleared. 00:04:21.54\00:04:24.33 That is fantastic. 00:04:24.75\00:04:27.36 So from 16 to 3 I think that's pretty good. 00:04:28.06\00:04:30.66 It's excellent! 00:04:31.15\00:04:32.18 -So what's the prognosis? You are seeing 00:13:25.07\00:13:26.54 all of these different specialists. 00:13:26.55\00:13:28.30 So if you have a pain problem, 00:13:28.31\00:13:30.12 you are seeing one doctor. 00:13:30.13\00:13:31.12 Maybe a orthopedic surgeon, 00:13:31.13\00:13:32.21 maybe a pain specialist. 00:13:32.22\00:13:33.66 If you've got depression, 00:13:34.06\00:13:35.42 you're probably seeing a psychiatrist. 00:13:35.43\00:13:37.57 If you've got some blood sugar problems, 00:13:37.75\00:13:39.84 maybe you're seeing an internal medicine specialist 00:13:39.85\00:13:42.06 or a cardiologist. 00:13:42.07\00:13:43.21 The challenge is that most of these doctors are unwilling 00:13:43.57\00:13:47.06 to change a prescription that someone else wrote. 00:13:47.07\00:13:49.09 -Right So when you come 00:13:49.10\00:13:50.81 for a short visit to a doctor, 00:13:50.82\00:13:52.63 you may be on 8 medicines 00:13:52.64\00:13:54.15 and your complaining about some kind of problem, 00:13:54.16\00:13:56.06 That doctor is not likely to say, 00:13:56.27\00:13:58.09 well maybe you're on too many medicines, 00:13:58.10\00:13:59.87 let's go back to square one, 00:13:59.88\00:14:01.33 let's see if we can work with you and simplify things." 00:14:01.34\00:14:03.72 They are going to say, no, you have this problem, 00:14:04.18\00:14:06.78 let me give you another prescription" 00:14:07.06\00:14:08.48 It is very easy the way american medicine has evolved. 00:14:08.72\00:14:12.45 for people to get on more and more medications. 00:14:12.46\00:14:15.18 Nobody really looks at the big picture 00:14:15.19\00:14:17.54 and says look, we've got to get a handle on this, 00:14:17.55\00:14:21.06 regardless if the top specialist in the community 00:14:21.07\00:14:23.21 wrote a prescription for this, 00:14:23.22\00:14:24.75 If we can get by without it, 00:14:25.15\00:14:26.54 than this is going to be in your interest. 00:14:26.78\00:14:28.48 -Well would it be fair to say than, 00:14:28.84\00:14:30.42 If someone is depressed and they are suffering from pains, 00:14:30.43\00:14:34.54 and maybe a little bit of this that and the other, 00:14:34.55\00:14:37.12 that they have 4 different doctors 00:14:37.27\00:14:39.24 and they are all giving different medications that 00:14:39.25\00:14:42.51 are counteracting the medications 00:14:42.63\00:14:43.84 that the previous doctor game them? 00:14:43.85\00:14:45.42 -Well I don't know if I would use the word counteracting 00:14:45.54\00:14:48.12 but I would say that these things 00:14:48.13\00:14:49.21 have an accumulative effect. 00:14:49.22\00:14:50.72 In fact, what I sometimes tell patients, 00:14:50.73\00:14:53.06 Once you start seeing multiple doctors 00:14:53.48\00:14:55.30 and you get on, like Lori said, 16 different medications, 00:14:55.31\00:14:58.30 There is no one in the world 00:14:58.51\00:15:00.18 that knows what that combination of 00:15:00.63\00:15:02.12 16 drugs is going to do. 00:15:02.13\00:15:04.42 Drugs are studied as single agents. 00:15:04.43\00:15:07.57 -Yes So what does that combination 00:15:07.58\00:15:09.18 of 16 drugs do especially when it is 00:15:09.19\00:15:11.54 superimposed on Lori's physiology 00:15:11.55\00:15:14.36 or Bob's or Sam's 00:15:14.37\00:15:16.06 We just don't always know 00:15:16.27\00:15:18.60 We like to say, Well we know how these drugs work 00:15:18.61\00:15:21.18 but when you get what we call Polypharmacy, 00:15:21.36\00:15:23.54 the risk of drug interactions just magnifies incredibly. 00:15:23.78\00:15:27.45 The risk of toxicity and side effects etc. 00:15:27.46\00:15:30.87 Here at NEWSTART, one of the beautiful things that we can do, 00:15:31.21\00:15:34.60 is say look, we have a comprehensive program. 00:15:34.61\00:15:36.66 The program is designed for the physicians 00:15:37.06\00:15:39.15 to be able to spend time with you. 00:15:39.16\00:15:40.63 If it doesn't happen in the office, 00:15:40.75\00:15:42.51 than we can come to your room 00:15:42.66\00:15:44.15 over at the NEWSTART lodge 00:15:44.16\00:15:45.48 if you are struggling with something. 00:15:45.49\00:15:47.06 -Wow Whatever it is, we are going to 00:15:47.07\00:15:48.42 take the time with you to evaluate 00:15:48.43\00:15:50.78 your problem and get 00:15:50.79\00:15:52.30 you on the path to recovery. 00:15:52.31\00:15:53.81 Often Ron, on these cases with multiple drugs, 00:15:54.06\00:15:57.21 part of the solution is simplifying the regiment. 00:15:57.45\00:15:59.69 So we've seen this over and over 00:16:00.54\00:16:02.66 through the years, where people 00:16:02.67\00:16:04.36 get on multiple drugs as you put it, 00:16:04.60\00:16:06.78 I know that there are viewers watching this program right now 00:16:07.36\00:16:12.63 and they are saying "Wow that sounds like me, 00:16:12.64\00:16:14.45 I'm taking 45 different medications. 00:16:14.46\00:16:16.66 Well not that many but we have seen 27 here. 00:16:16.67\00:16:19.84 -Yeah Some taking 15 or 20 00:16:19.85\00:16:22.09 What do they do? So this is kinda the trade-off. 00:18:31.25\00:18:34.75 A lot of people say, well I already see an Endocrinologist, 00:18:34.76\00:18:38.36 I'm seeing a pain specialist. Why should I see 00:18:38.37\00:18:41.09 a general internist? Or some of my colleagues 00:18:41.10\00:18:43.66 here who board in preventive medicine, 00:18:43.67\00:18:46.06 and family practice? Dr. Ing of course with a 00:18:46.07\00:18:48.60 dual board and he is also an Opthamologist. 00:18:48.61\00:18:50.87 They say why should we go there, 00:18:50.88\00:18:52.75 because we are already seeing this top specialist 00:18:52.76\00:18:54.84 in this big city? Well the problem is, 00:18:54.85\00:18:57.24 that top specialist, although they are very good 00:18:57.25\00:18:59.84 at what they do, they are very narrow 00:18:59.85\00:19:02.33 in their focus. They are not looking at you 00:19:02.34\00:19:04.12 as a whole person, they are just focused on your pain, 00:19:04.13\00:19:06.81 or they are just focused on your knee problem, 00:19:06.82\00:19:08.69 or they are just focused on your diabetes. 00:19:08.70\00:19:10.78 We are saying look, we are whole people. 00:19:10.79\00:19:14.18 We have a team here at Weimar, 00:19:14.45\00:19:16.45 where we can deal with you as a whole person. 00:19:16.69\00:19:19.06 That is the vision that we have here. 00:19:19.07\00:19:20.75 It is just like Jesus. 00:19:20.76\00:19:22.27 He didn't just say, I'm here to 00:19:22.28\00:19:23.78 help people spiritually, He ministered 00:19:23.79\00:19:25.75 to them as whole people. -Yeah 00:19:25.76\00:19:26.78 If they had physical problems, He healed them. 00:19:26.79\00:19:29.33 Is it fair to say, I've heard from a laymen's point of view, 00:19:29.75\00:19:34.09 Doctors only have a curtain amount of education 00:19:34.10\00:19:37.51 when it comes to nutrition and lifestyle etc. 00:19:37.52\00:19:40.75 Is it fair to say that? Is it true or not? 00:19:40.76\00:19:44.06 Well the baseline that we start with is not really great. 00:19:44.12\00:19:48.06 We don't get a huge amount of nutritional training 00:19:48.07\00:19:50.51 in medical school. We did get some at Loma Linda 00:19:50.52\00:19:53.60 where I trained. It has become I think, 00:19:53.61\00:19:56.27 pretty common for most medical schools to have 00:19:56.28\00:19:58.36 some nutritional training but that is really not 00:19:58.37\00:20:00.45 the corner stone. Many of us who end up 00:20:00.46\00:20:02.75 practicing what we call lifestyle medicine and 00:20:02.76\00:20:05.24 preventive medicine have gotten extra training 00:20:05.25\00:20:07.60 like many of the staff here. A number of us 00:20:07.61\00:20:10.81 have masters in public health degrees, 00:20:10.82\00:20:13.75 a number of us have done extra work 00:20:13.76\00:20:16.51 in nutrition, whether it is at the graduate level 00:20:16.52\00:20:19.30 in formal studies or just reading more about it 00:20:19.31\00:20:22.48 and becoming more expert in it. 00:20:22.49\00:20:24.21 Dr. Lukens has been here for 20 years. 00:20:24.22\00:20:27.03 He doesn't have a huge number of degrees 00:20:27.27\00:20:30.24 but he has an incredible amount of 00:20:30.25\00:20:32.78 practical experience from the mission field, 00:20:32.79\00:20:35.15 from here at Weimar, -Yeah 00:20:35.16\00:20:37.00 and working with people over the years. 00:20:37.01\00:20:38.27 So it's not even just the degrees 00:20:38.28\00:20:40.12 that one has and the formal training, 00:20:40.30\00:20:42.03 it is really just a commitment. 00:20:42.04\00:20:43.45 to help people with the lifestyle approach. 00:20:43.46\00:20:45.63 -So the lifestyle approach is not 00:20:46.12\00:20:48.51 common knowledge amongst doctors. 00:20:48.75\00:20:52.12 -Well I wouldn't say that doctors don't know about it, 00:20:52.13\00:20:55.45 but the problem is that the lifestyle approach 00:20:55.46\00:20:57.24 is time intensive. I can remember years ago. 00:20:57.25\00:21:01.51 I was at a conference. A medical conference 00:21:01.52\00:21:03.18 A leading diabetes expert was speaking. 00:21:03.19\00:21:05.60 He talked about how powerful exercise 00:21:05.61\00:21:09.15 and diet were in helping diabetes. 00:21:09.16\00:21:11.57 He spent about 5 minutes on that 00:21:11.58\00:21:13.51 but than he said, don't waste your time 00:21:13.52\00:21:15.42 telling patients about this because they won't change. 00:21:15.43\00:21:18.48 The rest of the talk was on insulin. 00:21:18.49\00:21:20.45 This is the common experience of doctors. 00:21:20.46\00:21:24.33 They don't have much time, they say lose 00:21:24.34\00:21:27.30 20 pounds and come see me back in 3 months. 00:21:27.31\00:21:29.51 The average person doesn't know how to do that. 00:21:29.52\00:21:31.30 on their own. It takes a team. 00:21:31.31\00:21:32.81 We have the exercise component here. 00:21:32.82\00:21:36.06 We have the hydrotherapy so we can deal with 00:21:36.07\00:21:38.69 the orthopedic problems that are keeping 00:21:38.70\00:21:40.18 people from exercising. I heard that this could 00:22:55.40\00:22:58.63 be a real big problem. Is that a problem? 00:22:58.64\00:23:00.72 What should we do about it if it is? 00:23:00.73\00:23:03.24 Vitamin B12 deficiency can be a very real problem 00:23:03.25\00:23:06.81 It can cause serious diseases. 00:23:06.82\00:23:11.09 It can cause problems with your blood, 00:23:11.10\00:23:13.33 a special type of anemia. 00:23:13.34\00:23:15.15 More critically still, is that it can cause damage 00:23:15.16\00:23:18.72 to your nerves and this can lead to 00:23:18.75\00:23:21.51 psychiatric and neurologic problems 00:23:21.52\00:23:24.36 that could be quite serious and if not caught 00:23:24.37\00:23:28.42 soon enough, could actually be irreversible. 00:23:28.43\00:23:31.36 So it is a very important thing to know about. 00:23:31.37\00:23:33.12 Do many people get this? Do many people 00:23:33.27\00:23:37.42 have these problems? Have you ever seen a case? 00:23:37.43\00:23:39.84 Yes I have seen a case unfortunately. 00:23:39.85\00:23:42.63 Vitamin B12 deficiency is not common 00:23:42.64\00:23:48.24 but it is somewhat prevalent. 00:23:48.25\00:23:51.21 In most cases it relates too 00:23:51.22\00:23:53.75 disorders of the gastrointestinal tract, 00:23:54.21\00:23:57.36 where the vitamin B12 for one reason 00:23:57.37\00:24:00.18 or another is not able to be absorbed well. 00:24:00.19\00:24:02.78 The other population that is particularly at risk, 00:24:02.79\00:24:05.54 for vitamin B12 risk is the elderly. 00:24:05.55\00:24:09.06 Often the elderly get on sort of a tea and toast diet, 00:24:09.07\00:24:12.84 and so they are not getting in much vitamin B12 00:24:13.27\00:24:15.75 and they don't absorb it as well. 00:24:15.76\00:24:18.27 As you get older, the requirements 00:24:18.28\00:24:20.12 for dietary B12 go up. 00:24:20.13\00:24:22.27 Now I don't want to put you on the spot, 00:24:22.51\00:24:24.42 This is kind of a true and false question for me. 00:24:24.43\00:24:26.63 I've heard that most vitamin B12 deficiencies 00:24:26.64\00:24:30.24 occur in people that are meat eaters. 00:24:30.25\00:24:31.69 Is that true or false? 00:24:31.70\00:24:32.81 That is true because of the reasons I just mentioned. 00:24:32.82\00:24:36.45 Most of the vitamin B12 deficiency is not due 00:24:36.46\00:24:39.78 to not getting enough in the diet. 00:24:39.81\00:24:41.84 rather it is due to gastrointestinal problems 00:24:41.85\00:24:45.18 interfering with the absorption. 00:24:45.19\00:24:46.87 However, vegetarians; particularly vegans 00:24:46.88\00:24:51.42 or total vegetarians that don't eat any 00:24:51.48\00:24:54.33 animal based foods, no milk, etc. 00:24:54.34\00:24:57.45 are at higher risk of developing vitamin B12 deficiency. 00:24:57.63\00:25:02.45 As you know, here at NEWSTART, we do teach 00:25:02.46\00:25:04.36 a plant based diet as a therapeutic diet 00:25:04.37\00:25:07.12 and as a preventive diet that can 00:25:07.13\00:25:09.18 increase your longevity as well as 00:25:09.33\00:25:11.72 reduce your risk for a variety of diseases. 00:25:11.73\00:25:14.48 We want to be smart about it 00:25:14.49\00:25:16.21 and we don't want to stumble into another problem 00:25:16.22\00:25:18.39 while we are solving others. 00:25:18.40\00:25:19.81 -So what can we do to avoid a deficiency in this?
