Hi friends, and welcome to another edition of NEWSTART Now. 00:00:24.03\00:00:27.39 We have a guest that's from halfway around the world. 00:00:27.40\00:00:31.03 This is Georgette Gindi, 00:00:31.06\00:00:33.63 and she is from the Middle East, 00:00:33.75\00:00:36.39 and we're going to look at a clip 00:00:36.45\00:00:38.45 when she first arrived here. 00:00:38.46\00:00:40.12 I don't have any diabetes or high blood pressure, 00:00:41.27\00:00:47.09 but all what I'm suffering is sciatica. 00:00:47.36\00:00:51.39 I chose the NEWSTART program because I want to lose weight, 00:00:52.00\00:00:57.63 and this is the cause of my pain. 00:00:57.72\00:01:03.18 The doctor told me I have to lose 14 kilos, 00:01:03.27\00:01:08.21 and it is very hard to lose a kilo at my age. 00:01:08.42\00:01:13.36 If God's will I will be healed from sciatica, 00:01:14.06\00:01:19.33 I'm going to give all my time for the service of God. 00:01:19.34\00:01:25.66 Welcome back friends, and in our studio... 00:01:28.00\00:01:30.21 How are you, young lady? - I'm fine, thank you. 00:01:30.39\00:01:33.15 Good to see you. - Thank you. 00:01:33.16\00:01:35.27 Now you described during that interview 00:01:35.36\00:01:38.30 that you needed to lose 14 kilos. 00:01:38.33\00:01:41.63 A lot of our viewers are not sure what that means. 00:01:41.72\00:01:45.42 Is that 30 pounds? 00:01:45.57\00:01:47.21 Almost, yeah. - Almost 30 pounds. 00:01:48.21\00:01:50.57 Okay, and how much weight have you lost since you've been here? 00:01:50.81\00:01:53.51 I lost 7 and a half pounds. - Good! 00:01:53.66\00:01:58.03 In such a short time. 00:01:58.04\00:02:00.66 And how is your leg and your situation? 00:02:01.06\00:02:04.42 I can tell you I am 95 percent healed. 00:02:04.57\00:02:10.27 - Alright! 00:02:10.33\00:02:12.12 And the 5 percent is my part. 00:02:12.15\00:02:18.36 I'm going to maintain what I've learned at the NEWSTART program. 00:02:18.48\00:02:23.33 - Praise God. 00:02:23.45\00:02:25.06 Now I know we've had a little bit of bad news 00:02:25.21\00:02:27.81 since you've been here. 00:02:27.82\00:02:29.21 Tell us what happened. 00:02:29.48\00:02:31.51 Yeah, the first few days they asked 00:02:31.84\00:02:35.39 to draw blood from everybody. 00:02:35.40\00:02:38.24 So I did. 00:02:38.42\00:02:41.06 The next day Doctor DeRose came and told me, 00:02:41.54\00:02:45.00 "The lab wants another draw from you 00:02:45.06\00:02:49.27 because they want to make sure of something." 00:02:49.45\00:02:53.27 So the drew the second time, blood. 00:02:53.57\00:02:57.84 And the next day Doctor DeRose called me in the office 00:02:58.75\00:03:03.39 and he informed me of bad news. 00:03:03.57\00:03:07.00 And that is, I had leukemia. 00:03:07.33\00:03:11.06 So before you came to the NEWSTART program, 00:03:11.84\00:03:14.36 you had no idea that all of a sudden this 00:03:14.42\00:03:18.39 leukemia was going to rear up. 00:03:18.54\00:03:20.45 But you found out here. 00:03:20.66\00:03:22.18 Well, as a matter of fact, two months ago, 00:03:22.42\00:03:25.03 before I came to NEWSTART, 00:03:25.09\00:03:27.72 I had a blood picture in Egypt. 00:03:27.87\00:03:32.78 And it showed that my white blood cells were high, 00:03:33.51\00:03:38.18 but they didn't mention anything about leukemia. 00:03:38.27\00:03:42.42 So it was a surprise and a shock to me. 00:03:44.21\00:03:47.84 Okay, so now you found out you have leukemia. 00:03:48.27\00:03:52.57 Then what did you decide to do? 00:03:52.66\00:03:55.00 What did you and Doctor DeRose figure out? 00:03:55.01\00:03:59.00 Well, we called my daughter in Canada, 00:03:59.54\00:04:03.75 and she got the reports from the lab 00:04:04.00\00:04:07.84 and the reports from Doctor DeRose, 00:04:08.06\00:04:11.39 who is my doctor here. 00:04:11.40\00:04:13.45 And she made an appointment in the hospital in Canada 00:04:13.75\00:04:18.78 to see a specialist to have some more tests 00:04:19.00\00:04:24.57 on the 11th of June. 00:04:24.72\00:04:28.57 But I just came back from the doctor's office right now, 00:04:29.36\00:04:33.21 - Just before you came into the studio? 00:04:33.24\00:04:36.33 - And you have a smile on your face. 00:04:36.57\00:04:38.54 - I know you've got something good to share. 00:04:38.55\00:04:40.24 Yes. Doctor DeRose told me 00:04:40.51\00:04:45.54 the result of the lab just came a few hours ago, 00:04:45.72\00:04:50.81 and it says that my white blood cells are better, 00:04:51.00\00:04:58.12 my cholesterol is better, 00:04:58.39\00:05:00.81 and I lost 7-1/2 pounds, 00:05:01.03\00:05:03.48 and my situation is much, much better than 00:05:03.69\00:05:07.30 when I came to NEWSTART. 00:05:07.42\00:05:11.42 Well, it seems to me, 00:05:11.84\00:05:14.30 as a result of coming to NEWSTART, 00:05:14.42\00:05:16.72 maybe the program saved your life? 00:05:16.78\00:05:20.03 Yes, it did. 00:05:20.42\00:05:21.72 Because you didn't know you had leukemia. 00:05:21.73\00:05:25.36 And now Doctor DeRose, 00:05:25.66\00:05:27.87 who is a fine doctor and an internist, 00:05:28.06\00:05:30.75 he discovers you have this leukemia, 00:05:30.84\00:05:33.78 and because you've been on the program 00:05:33.87\00:05:36.12 you're starting to get healthier from the leukemia. 00:05:36.18\00:05:38.78 Correct? 00:05:38.87\00:05:39.87 Yes. - Okay. 00:05:40.15\00:05:41.87 By the way, how is it that you got to 00:05:42.72\00:05:47.12 NEWSTART to begin with? 00:05:47.30\00:05:49.00 I mean, all the way from Kuwait? 00:05:49.01\00:05:50.72 That's halfway around the world, isn't it? 00:05:50.84\00:05:52.57 Yes. 00:05:52.87\00:05:54.66 I always watch 3ABN channel, 00:05:55.03\00:05:58.06 in Egypt and in Kuwait. 00:05:58.18\00:06:00.42 In Egypt and Kuwait they have 3ABN? 00:06:01.15\00:06:02.78 Yes. - Okay. 00:06:03.03\00:06:04.15 I enjoy the programs on 3ABN. 00:06:04.18\00:06:09.45 All through the day I can put it on 00:06:09.69\00:06:13.39 and enjoy it. 00:06:13.51\00:06:15.30 It's a wonderful program, yes. 00:06:16.09\00:06:18.00 And did you see our NEWSTART Now program there? 00:06:18.12\00:06:21.45 Yes. 00:06:21.69\00:06:23.60 So we're reaching all the way to Kuwait. 00:06:24.00\00:06:27.18 Isn't that marvelous! 00:06:27.19\00:06:28.84 So as a result of seeing this program, NEWSTART Now, 00:06:28.85\00:06:33.27 on 3ABN, is why you're here. 00:06:33.36\00:06:36.60 Yes. - Praise God. 00:06:36.72\00:06:40.00 - Wow, you just must be marveled by this. 00:06:40.36\00:06:43.72 - Yes, I'm so thankful that 00:06:44.12\00:06:47.48 God led me to NEWSTART program here, 00:06:47.75\00:06:51.72 because if I knew of my situation somewhere else, 00:06:52.03\00:06:58.03 I could have felt so bad. 00:06:58.33\00:07:02.66 But with the help of the people around me, 00:07:03.00\00:07:05.78 and the Christian spirit I felt 00:07:05.87\00:07:10.48 from every one of the workers, 00:07:10.57\00:07:16.36 it was really like help to me. 00:07:16.45\00:07:21.87 I consider God has permitted this disease for me 00:07:23.63\00:07:31.33 for a reason. 00:07:31.54\00:07:33.63 And that's to purify my character, 00:07:33.75\00:07:38.66 and prepare me to fit in His eternal kingdom. 00:07:42.09\00:07:49.48 And I pray that He will use me 00:07:50.45\00:07:56.69 to be a blessing to others and glorify Him in my life. 00:07:57.45\00:08:03.66 And I promised God I will 00:08:04.09\00:08:09.21 be His servant for the rest of my life. 00:08:10.09\00:08:15.00 Now you said that even before you found out you had leukemia. 00:08:16.42\00:08:19.48 Yes, because I am a servant of God. 00:08:19.57\00:08:23.30 But I'm going to serve Him more from now on. 00:08:23.57\00:08:29.75 God bless you. 00:08:30.39\00:08:31.69 Now you thought you were coming here 00:08:32.03\00:08:34.06 for a little leg pain, right? 00:08:34.07\00:08:35.57 Yes. [chuckle] 00:08:35.78\00:08:37.72 And you found out now that you 00:08:38.78\00:08:40.36 have a little different situation. 00:08:40.37\00:08:42.06 Yes, as a matter of fact, 00:08:42.45\00:08:43.81 my daughter and her husband came. 00:08:43.82\00:08:46.84 They visited me twice since I was here. 00:08:47.09\00:08:51.00 - All the way from Canada? 00:08:51.24\00:08:52.57 No, the one who lives here, two hours away. 00:08:53.15\00:08:56.48 - Oh, okay. 00:08:56.57\00:08:58.03 She lives in Novato, south of San Francisco. 00:08:58.12\00:09:03.30 When they came, and she saw me walking with them, 00:09:03.51\00:09:09.45 she was really surprised. Don't wait. 00:11:08.13\00:11:10.15 Give us a call at: 00:11:10.60\00:11:12.33 Or visit our website: 00:11:15.39\00:11:16.63 Welcome back, friends, and as I promised, 00:11:34.36\00:11:36.63 Dr. David DeRose. How are you, Doctor? 00:11:36.84\00:11:38.60 Great. Good to be with you, Ron. 00:11:38.66\00:11:40.06 It's always good to see you. 00:11:40.12\00:11:41.57 - It's good to be here on the show again. 00:11:41.69\00:11:43.36 Yeah, and I want to get right into this interview 00:11:43.63\00:11:46.27 about your patient, and what has transpired. 00:11:46.36\00:11:49.54 She came here for one particular ailment, 00:11:49.69\00:11:52.39 perhaps two, 00:11:52.48\00:11:54.03 but found out that she has leukemia. 00:11:54.09\00:11:57.33 Is that really what you call it? 00:11:57.45\00:11:59.03 Well, maybe first we should emphasize the positives, 00:11:59.21\00:12:02.12 like Georgette did, 00:12:02.15\00:12:03.69 and that is she made a lot of progress while she was here 00:12:03.72\00:12:06.21 with her sciatica, her back pain. 00:12:06.22\00:12:08.18 lost weight, improved her cholesterol, 00:12:08.24\00:12:10.39 a number of the things that she mentioned. 00:12:10.40\00:12:11.87 But there was that one big surprise. 00:12:12.18\00:12:14.57 And you know, as a physician who's an educator, 00:12:14.66\00:12:17.72 that's my role, you always think you're 00:12:17.73\00:12:20.57 communicating very clearly to patients, 00:12:20.60\00:12:22.87 and it's sometimes quite sobering 00:12:22.88\00:12:25.06 to listen to what they've heard you telling them. 00:12:25.09\00:12:27.06 Like we just did, right? 00:12:27.57\00:12:29.09 Yeah, and just to... 00:12:29.21\00:12:31.06 Because Georgette has shared this 00:12:31.21\00:12:32.66 with our worldwide audience, 00:12:32.67\00:12:34.51 it's very simple to articulate 00:12:34.57\00:12:37.00 a little bit more about her situation. 00:12:37.06\00:12:38.75 Because normally, for those who just tuned in on this show, 00:12:38.76\00:12:41.69 we don't just start talking about people's health issues 00:12:41.70\00:12:44.24 unless they've mentioned them 00:12:44.27\00:12:45.60 and they're clear they're open to that. 00:12:45.61\00:12:47.48 But in Georgette's case, 00:12:47.66\00:12:48.87 she had a very high white blood cell count. 00:12:48.88\00:12:51.06 And in going over her history, 00:12:51.30\00:12:53.60 this seemed to have been a problem for some 5 years. 00:12:53.75\00:12:57.60 And no one had ever really looked into it further. 00:12:57.84\00:13:01.66 And as we did some more testing, 00:13:01.84\00:13:04.63 the most consistent explanation for what she had 00:13:04.64\00:13:08.12 was something that we call chronic lymphocytic leukemia. 00:13:08.30\00:13:12.36 When people hear leukemia, 00:13:12.42\00:13:14.78 they think of blood cancers that kill people rapidly. 00:13:15.03\00:13:17.69 Those are the acute leukemias. 00:13:17.81\00:13:19.57 There's another group of leukemias that are chronic. 00:13:19.66\00:13:22.33 And her picture was most consistent with 00:13:22.39\00:13:24.75 this chronic lymphocytic leukemia. 00:13:25.00\00:13:26.72 Lymphocytic refers to the type of 00:13:26.84\00:13:28.81 blood cell that's being overproduced. 00:13:28.82\00:13:31.03 And so as you meet with someone, meet with their family, 00:13:31.21\00:13:34.72 try to explain this, 00:13:34.75\00:13:36.18 she actually...We haven't confirmed that diagnosis. 00:13:36.24\00:13:39.39 It requires extra testing, special testing, to do that. 00:13:39.40\00:13:42.84 It looks like that, 00:13:43.03\00:13:44.33 but she is going to need additional testing, 00:13:44.42\00:13:46.63 and she wanted to have that done in Canada 00:13:46.64\00:13:48.24 because she has... 00:13:48.25\00:13:49.48 I guess she's a Canadian citizen 00:13:49.57\00:13:51.18 and has health coverage there in Canada. 00:13:51.24\00:13:53.45 Now did you speak with the doctors in Canada? 00:13:53.78\00:13:56.15 Or did you suggest that certain tests be done? 00:13:56.21\00:14:01.00 Actually, we had quite a bit of dialogue. 00:14:01.12\00:14:02.84 It so happens that one of Georgette's family members 00:14:03.00\00:14:06.09 is an internal medicine specialist. 00:14:06.12\00:14:08.06 I was in consultation with a hematologist, 00:14:08.18\00:14:10.84 who is a specialist in blood diseases. 00:14:11.03\00:14:13.15 And between me and the family, 00:14:13.39\00:14:15.30 there was communication with a cancer center in Canada. 00:14:15.36\00:14:19.21 So basically, between the advice, the insights, 00:14:19.22\00:14:22.81 of all these different experts, 00:14:22.87\00:14:24.69 we've kind of come up with a plan, 00:14:24.87\00:14:27.03 and that's what Georgette will be following. 00:14:27.12\00:14:29.06 The exciting thing about this type of cancer, 00:14:29.12\00:14:31.51 CLL it's sometimes abbreviated, 00:14:31.52\00:14:34.18 is sometimes it's very indolent. 00:14:34.30\00:14:36.12 And if the history that we've gotten is really correct, 00:14:36.27\00:14:38.87 that she's had this for 5 years and wasn't even aware of it, 00:14:39.00\00:14:42.12 it's possible and in fact perhaps likely, 00:14:42.15\00:14:45.27 that she has a more indolent variety 00:14:45.36\00:14:47.60 that hopefully, in the very best case scenario, 00:14:47.61\00:14:50.87 could never bother her, 00:14:51.09\00:14:52.60 at least in any significant way. 00:14:52.75\00:14:55.24 Worst case scenario, it could become very aggressive 00:14:55.33\00:14:57.81 and cause serious problems. 00:14:57.87\00:14:59.84 So at this point there's still a lot we don't know. 00:15:00.03\00:15:02.75 But when you mention the word cancer to a person, 00:15:02.76\00:15:05.60 you know, you can see what Georgette is going through. 00:15:05.84\00:15:08.24 I mean, that's typically the response you get. 00:15:08.36\00:15:10.75 And here, in our NEWSTART program, 00:15:10.81\00:15:12.87 we're used to helping people feel better 00:15:13.12\00:15:16.24 and getting them off their medicines. 00:15:16.27\00:15:17.54 This is not something we look forward to, 00:15:17.63\00:15:20.21 making a diagnosis that someone hasn't had in the past. 00:15:20.33\00:15:23.87 Well, I appreciate your comment, Doctor, 00:15:24.27\00:15:27.75 and I'd like to shift a little bit and talk 00:15:28.00\00:15:31.09 as you initially said, about the positive. 00:15:31.21\00:15:33.69 Because she did make some tremendous accomplishments! 00:15:33.81\00:15:36.87 And she's so wonderful, to listen to her testimony 00:15:37.03\00:15:40.48 and how grateful she is in spite of whatever is happening. 00:15:40.49\00:15:44.21 But let's talk about this pain that she had in her leg. 00:15:44.45\00:15:48.30 She had had this pain for some time. 00:15:48.45\00:15:51.09 And she came all the way from Europe 00:15:51.21\00:15:54.06 to come through this program. Why here? 00:15:54.21\00:15:56.84 Yeah, first started in Egypt, went through... 00:15:57.21\00:15:58.66 I mean it took her... She had to change planes 00:15:58.67\00:16:00.21 like four times. 00:16:00.30\00:16:01.36 And that's real commitment, if you've flown recently. 00:16:01.37\00:16:03.51 You know, to sit in four different airports. 00:16:03.75\00:16:06.33 But Georgette really had a problem 00:16:06.48\00:16:09.42 that's very common in America called sciatica. 00:16:09.43\00:16:11.87 It's what she mentioned. 00:16:11.88\00:16:13.09 Sciatica is a lay term. 00:16:13.36\00:16:15.15 We sometimes use it even in medical circles. 00:16:15.16\00:16:17.24 It's where one of the disks, one of the cushioning 00:16:17.36\00:16:20.33 membranes, if you will, between the vertebrae, 00:16:20.48\00:16:23.69 between the bones in the back, is bulging 00:16:23.70\00:16:26.06 and pressing on a nerve. 00:16:26.12\00:16:28.06 That pressure on the nerve can cause pain 00:16:28.09\00:16:30.87 that can go down to the thigh, 00:16:31.03\00:16:32.48 into the leg, even into the feet 00:16:32.49\00:16:34.12 in more serious cases. 00:16:34.13\00:16:35.60 Generally as a rule, 00:16:35.69\00:16:36.87 the further down it goes into the leg, 00:16:36.88\00:16:38.36 usually the worse the problem is. 00:16:38.37\00:16:40.18 And so, I've heard in the past, 00:16:40.78\00:16:43.18 and being a massage therapist myself, 00:16:43.27\00:16:46.09 with a little manipulation and walking and movement, 00:16:46.15\00:16:49.12 perhaps stretching, it often just heals itself. 00:16:49.13\00:16:52.15 Yeah, there are a number of techniques that can be helpful. 00:16:52.42\00:16:54.84 I mean, there's anti-inflammatory things, 00:16:54.87\00:16:56.81 and here in NEWSTART, the diet we use 00:16:56.82\00:16:59.15 is an anti-inflammatory diet. 00:16:59.39\00:17:01.12 Animal products in general tend to make inflammation worse. 00:17:01.21\00:17:04.39 And so as we use this plant-focused diet, 00:17:04.40\00:17:08.09 this total vegetarian diet, 00:17:08.12\00:17:09.84 that in itself can help with inflammatory problems. 00:17:09.87\00:17:13.27 But then we're doing the hydrotherapy, the massage, 00:17:13.33\00:17:16.03 the stretching maneuvers, 00:17:16.09\00:17:17.39 and these things do definitely have a big role 00:17:17.54\00:17:19.57 in dealing with all kinds of musculoskeletal problems. 00:17:19.66\00:17:22.57 It's wonderful that people can hear, 00:17:23.60\00:17:26.30 and people are watching us right now, 00:17:26.36\00:17:28.39 and know that there's help here 00:17:28.42\00:17:30.39 for a number of different illnesses. 00:17:30.51\00:17:33.48 And maybe we can talk about that briefly. 00:17:33.60\00:17:36.42 What else can we expect 00:17:36.57\00:17:40.00 here at Weimar at our NEWSTART program, 00:17:40.18\00:17:42.69 for those viewers who are 00:17:43.03\00:17:45.09 in pain or just don't know what's going on with them? 00:17:45.15\00:17:47.63 Well basically, we are always taking time with patients, 00:17:47.87\00:17:52.30 trying to explore things. 00:17:52.39\00:17:53.45 We're not a diagnostic center. 00:17:53.46\00:17:55.27 I mean, we're not a Mayo Clinic of the West, 00:17:55.33\00:17:57.81 so we don't have high-tech MRIs 00:17:58.12\00:18:01.36 and diagnostic equipment. 00:18:01.39\00:18:03.15 But one thing that we have 00:18:03.24\00:18:04.66 that patients continue to identify as being very powerful 00:18:04.67\00:18:07.42 is we just have a program set up 00:18:07.51\00:18:09.21 where we spend time with patients. 00:18:09.22\00:18:10.60 And many times people, even if they've got a disease 00:18:10.69\00:18:13.45 that's reversible with lifestyle, 00:18:13.48\00:18:15.36 they'll say, "Well how come no one ever told us this?" 00:18:15.54\00:18:17.78 "How come no one mentioned that with my diabetes 00:18:18.12\00:18:20.81 I could reverse it with lifestyle changes?" 00:18:21.00\00:18:23.15 "How come no one told me that 00:18:23.24\00:18:24.39 my high blood pressure might respond 00:18:24.40\00:18:26.54 to doing more exercise 00:18:26.63\00:18:28.69 or making some dietary adjustments 00:18:28.70\00:18:30.57 or managing my stress better, 00:18:30.63\00:18:32.30 or getting rid of caffeine in my program?" 00:18:32.36\00:18:34.87 Whatever it might be. 00:18:34.88\00:18:36.12 How do you respond to those questions? 00:18:36.21\00:18:37.45 Well, basically what we say is, 00:18:37.75\00:18:39.42 the Western medical system, 00:18:39.69\00:18:41.39 because of all kinds of pressures, 00:18:41.45\00:18:43.09 has really moved largely into 00:18:43.21\00:18:45.69 a much more assembly line type process in many settings. 00:18:45.87\00:18:50.33 Most doctors, even if they're interested 00:18:50.34\00:18:52.06 in teaching their patients, don't have that luxury. 00:18:52.07\00:18:54.24 Because they have to see so many patients per hour, 00:18:54.30\00:18:57.42 or they're not going to pay the overhead, 00:18:57.43\00:19:00.03 and they're not in a private practice anymore. 00:19:00.04\00:19:02.09 They're reporting to some organization 00:19:02.24\00:19:04.09 that owns the practice who's putting pressure on them 00:19:04.15\00:19:06.57 to see so many people in so much time. 00:19:06.60\00:19:08.42 I have a good friend, an orthopedic surgeon, 00:19:08.48\00:19:11.51 who got extremely frustrated in this kind of system. 00:19:11.81\00:19:14.18 They were giving him like 10 minutes 00:19:14.21\00:19:16.36 to see a new patient, 00:19:16.42\00:19:17.63 and then they were double booking him, 00:19:17.75\00:19:19.12 so he had 5 minutes. 00:19:19.13\00:19:20.36 And he was the kind of guy who wanted 00:19:20.45\00:19:21.60 to help people with these issues. 00:19:21.61\00:19:23.18 So it's not necessarily a fault of 00:19:23.30\00:19:25.42 the doctors or their training, 00:19:25.43\00:19:27.24 It's just the system that we're in. 00:19:27.45\00:19:29.24 As we try to cut costs in medical care, 00:19:29.36\00:19:32.36 as we decrease reimbursements. 00:19:32.39\00:19:34.06 doctors in medical practices feel they have 00:19:34.15\00:19:36.60 less time to spend with patients. 00:19:36.61\00:19:38.48 Here we've deliberately gone against that tide. 00:19:38.63\00:19:41.27 We said, "Look, our priority is educating people, 00:19:41.39\00:19:44.24 helping them to address their diseases more naturally, 00:19:44.30\00:19:46.69 whether it's diabetes, whether it's sciatica, 00:19:46.78\00:19:49.09 whether it's arthritis, intestinal problems, 00:19:49.18\00:19:51.12 I mean, the list goes on and on. 00:19:51.15\00:19:52.63 Well, as you are aware, 00:19:52.81\00:19:55.06 we've had many guests who have come on camera 00:19:55.15\00:19:57.75 and have said, "I can't believe the time 00:19:57.78\00:20:00.00 I'm spending with my doctors!" 00:20:00.01\00:20:01.69 And they feel like they're really getting over, 00:20:02.03\00:20:03.87 because they get to eat with you guys, you know. 00:20:03.88\00:20:06.42 The doctors are in the cafeteria 00:20:06.45\00:20:08.54 with the guests, eating with them. 00:20:08.55\00:20:10.57 The guests get to talk to you. 00:20:10.58\00:20:12.66 I was a guest, as you know. 00:20:12.78\00:20:14.48 And I felt like, 00:20:14.51\00:20:15.66 "Wow, I get to sit with my doctor 00:20:15.67\00:20:17.36 and then I go for a walk and et cetera." 00:20:17.39\00:20:19.24 That's very inspiring and very encouraging. 00:20:19.39\00:20:22.00 Well, it's powerful, because today what's happened is 00:20:22.30\00:20:24.60 most people don't have access 00:20:24.61\00:20:26.60 to someone they feel is really an expert 00:20:26.61\00:20:29.00 or knows their situation. 00:20:29.01\00:20:30.57 And we have lots of information. 00:20:30.58\00:20:32.33 I mean, you just type in anything on the internet. 00:20:32.36\00:20:34.39 And I see patients all the time with this scenario. 00:20:34.40\00:20:36.60 In fact, one of my patients in this last program 00:20:36.81\00:20:39.27 said, "Dr. DeRose, I had to stop going to the internet." 00:20:39.28\00:20:42.42 Because all they do is they read about more and more stuff 00:20:42.63\00:20:45.21 and they don't know how to apply it to themselves. 00:20:45.48\00:20:47.45 They're not a medical expert. 00:20:47.57\00:20:49.15 So it's really powerful when you have 00:20:49.24\00:20:50.60 someone who can help navigate you through that process. 00:20:50.63\00:20:53.27 It's not just doctors. We have health educators, 00:20:53.39\00:20:55.45 people helping you with exercise, 00:20:55.63\00:20:57.06 people with cooking classes, 00:20:57.24\00:20:58.54 hydrotherapy, massage-- there's a whole team 00:20:58.63\00:21:00.87 that really makes the program powerful. 00:21:01.21\00:21:03.15 And I like the way you said that. 00:21:03.66\00:21:05.42 It's the whole team. So it's not any one 00:21:05.45\00:21:07.81 part of the NEWSTART program, but all of it. 00:21:08.00\00:21:11.63 Exactly, and the other part that we can't 00:21:11.87\00:21:13.66 minimize the importance of is the spiritual part. 00:21:13.67\00:21:15.78 Over the years we've all heard 00:21:16.00\00:21:18.09 that the people who've gotten good care, 00:21:18.12\00:21:20.33 they've had a good program, 00:21:20.34\00:21:22.09 but that spiritual ingredient was missing. 00:21:22.10\00:21:24.54 We're whole people, and God is really anxious 00:21:24.57\00:21:27.21 to help us in this whole process of lifestyle change and healing. 00:21:27.22\00:21:30.36 Doctor, I want to thank you for joining us on the program. 00:21:30.84\00:21:33.45 Great to be with you, Ron. - We're running out of time. 00:21:33.46\00:21:35.27 Friends, don't go away. 00:21:35.57\00:21:36.81 We've got an important tip for you right after this. 00:21:36.84\00:21:39.42 Welcome to NEWSTART at Home. 00:21:53.39\00:21:55.00 I'm Dr. David DeRose, your host today, 00:21:55.01\00:21:57.33 and with me is Hildelisa Flickinger, 00:21:57.42\00:21:59.66 a masters-trained nutritionist and registered dietician. 00:21:59.78\00:22:03.51 Hildelisa, it's great to be on the show again with you. 00:22:03.57\00:22:06.24 Glad to be here. 00:22:06.36\00:22:07.66 You've been looking at a real important topic, 00:22:08.03\00:22:10.66 and that is the topic of beverages. 00:22:10.72\00:22:13.57 There's a lot of stuff out there in the shelves 00:22:13.66\00:22:15.87 of stores and gas stations. 00:22:16.00\00:22:19.03 Should we be thinking about what we're drinking? 00:22:19.06\00:22:21.54 Is that important? 00:22:21.57\00:22:22.63 Oh, definitely! We all know the importance 00:22:22.81\00:22:25.09 of proper hydration for our bodies. 00:22:25.15\00:22:26.87 And as you well know, 00:22:27.18\00:22:28.51 there's no system in the body that does not depend on water. 00:22:28.57\00:22:32.03 So now people may be asking, 00:22:32.27\00:22:33.75 "Well, how much water should we drink?" 00:22:33.81\00:22:35.51 And just a basic rule is 00:22:35.66\00:22:38.03 8 to 10 eight-ounce glasses of water a day, 00:22:38.09\00:22:40.78 or just enough to keep the urine pale. 00:22:40.79\00:22:43.78 Okay, now that's for an adult, presumably. 00:22:44.18\00:22:45.72 Yes. 00:22:45.75\00:22:46.75 Because I know you've got some young children. 00:22:46.76\00:22:48.36 You're not making them drink 00:22:48.42\00:22:49.75 8 to 10 glasses of water a day, are you? 00:22:49.76\00:22:51.63 No, that might be too much. - Okay. 00:22:51.64\00:22:54.03 Now, another question that people often have is 00:22:54.39\00:22:57.51 "Should we wait until we're hungry? 00:22:57.60\00:22:59.03 I'll just wait until I'm thirsty 00:22:59.15\00:23:01.36 to drink water." 00:23:01.42\00:23:02.72 Well no, you should not wait, 00:23:02.81\00:23:04.57 because by that time you have some degree of dehydration. 00:23:04.58\00:23:08.21 And of course dehydration has many symptoms and problems, 00:23:08.36\00:23:12.36 one of which is that it lowers your metabolic rate. 00:23:12.39\00:23:15.75 And of course, if someone's trying to lose weight, 00:23:16.03\00:23:18.24 that is not good news. 00:23:18.30\00:23:19.84 So drinking more water can actually 00:23:20.12\00:23:22.27 help a person lose weight? 00:23:22.28\00:23:23.78 Yes, and not only that. 00:23:24.03\00:23:25.60 Studies have shown that adequate water intake 00:23:25.63\00:23:29.09 can help decrease the risk of some cancers, 00:23:29.15\00:23:32.39 and cardiovascular disease, and so on and so forth. 00:23:32.48\00:23:35.75 So water is really good stuff. 00:23:36.24\00:23:37.81 But there's a lot of people, Hildelisa-- 00:23:37.87\00:23:39.45 you know it as well as I do-- 00:23:39.54\00:23:41.00 that they say, "Listen. 00:23:41.01\00:23:42.12 I just don't like water." 00:23:42.24\00:23:44.18 What do you do for those people? 00:23:44.24\00:23:45.54 That's right. 00:23:45.55\00:23:46.57 Now, there are so many beverages out there 00:23:46.60\00:23:48.78 of course, and so many options for people. 00:23:48.79\00:23:51.36 But still, what do you think is the best 00:23:51.37\00:23:53.27 option for supplying our fluid needs? 00:23:53.45\00:23:56.06 Well it seems pretty clear to me from the medical research 00:23:56.21\00:23:58.39 literature that it's just pure H2O. 00:23:58.45\00:24:01.15 That's right - water. 00:24:01.42\00:24:02.66 Now there are some recent trends out there 00:24:02.75\00:24:05.42 in beverages, specifically in bottled waters. 00:24:05.45\00:24:08.87 And you've probably seen them. 00:24:09.09\00:24:12.00 You really can't miss them. 00:24:12.01\00:24:13.57 When you go to the grocery store you see the big displays, 00:24:13.66\00:24:16.51 the colorful bottles. 00:24:16.52\00:24:18.00 And one of the most popular is 00:24:18.03\00:24:20.51 one that they have added vitamins 00:24:20.52\00:24:22.87 and other ingredients to. 00:24:22.88\00:24:26.24 So these so-called flavored waters, 00:24:26.36\00:24:28.21 is that what we're talking about? 00:24:28.33\00:24:29.45 Yes, they're called enhanced waters. 00:24:29.57\00:24:31.72 Okay, enhanced waters. 00:24:31.78\00:24:33.48 That's right, and I have a bottle of it right here. 00:24:33.66\00:24:36.57 This is one of the most popular ones. 00:24:36.58\00:24:39.03 And I gave you a label, 00:24:39.15\00:24:41.00 and you're going to help me read the label. 00:24:41.06\00:24:43.06 We're going to see what comes 00:24:43.09\00:24:44.72 together with those added vitamins. 00:24:44.75\00:24:46.57 So what is the serving size? 00:24:46.58\00:24:48.51 Okay, serving size...per... 00:24:48.60\00:24:51.21 That container there, 00:24:51.22\00:24:53.18 it's got 2 -1/2 servings, it says. 00:24:53.19\00:24:56.15 That's right. The serving size is 8 ounces, 00:24:56.27\00:24:59.18 but it is a 20-ounce bottle. 00:24:59.30\00:25:01.39 So it has 2-1/2 servings. 00:25:01.51\00:25:03.54 Now how many calories per serving does it say? 00:25:03.57\00:25:06.06 Okay, I'm looking here. 00:25:06.21\00:25:07.84 Wow, it's got 13 grams of sugar in it, 00:25:08.09\00:25:11.36 and calories, 50! 00:25:11.48\00:25:13.84 Fifty calories! 00:25:13.87\00:25:15.03 And that is per serving. 00:25:15.18\00:25:16.39 So in a bottle you're going to have 125 calories 00:25:16.48\00:25:19.60 and 32-1/2 grams of sugar. 00:25:19.63\00:25:22.27 That's 8 teaspoons of sugar, 00:25:22.30\00:25:23.72 just a little less than a can of soda. 00:25:23.81\00:25:26.06 Eight teaspoons of sugar? 00:25:26.09\00:25:27.57 And they're selling this as... 00:25:27.63\00:25:29.12 Why do they call that enhanced? 00:25:29.15\00:25:30.54 I like flavored better than enhanced. 00:25:30.63\00:25:32.66 Enhanced makes it sound like it's better. 00:25:32.69\00:25:34.12 Yes, it's enhanced because it has added vitamins. 00:25:34.36\00:25:37.21 They've added vitamin A, vitamin C, and B vitamins. 00:25:37.22\00:25:41.09 But if you look closely at the label, 00:25:41.15\00:25:43.18 you'd have to drink the whole bottle 00:25:43.27\00:25:45.36 to get 100 percent of the RDAs for the B vitamins. 00:25:45.42\00:25:48.75 So basically if you're eating a balanced diet 00:25:49.00\00:25:53.81 or just taking a multivitamin, 00:25:53.84\00:25:55.84 you're just not going to get any benefit 00:25:56.03\00:25:58.30 from drinking these enhanced waters. 00:25:58.36\00:26:00.60 So this is looking more like a soft drink, 00:26:00.72\00:26:03.39 not a nutrition supplement. 00:26:03.51\00:26:05.30 Wow, so I would be better off if I'm concerned about 00:26:05.33\00:26:08.03 my vitamins, to just take a pill, 00:26:08.09\00:26:10.09 a multivitamin, with a good, pure glass of water, 00:26:10.30\00:26:15.33 maybe even from my tap. 00:26:15.36\00:26:17.00 That's right, and you won't get all the calories from this, 00:26:17.30\00:26:19.72 which is not going to help your weight. 00:26:19.75\00:26:22.48 Tremendous. 00:26:22.63\00:26:23.72 Hildelisa Flickinger has just given us another great insight 00:26:23.81\00:26:26.75 into how we can improve our health 00:26:26.76\00:26:28.81 and prevent weight gain. 00:26:28.87\00:26:31.24 Make a point of drinking adequate amounts of water 00:26:31.27\00:26:34.33 and choose the simple variety of water 00:26:34.39\00:26:37.81 that God made in the beginning-- just pure H2O. 00:26:37.82\00:26:40.30 I'm Dr. David DeRose. 00:26:40.45\00:26:41.69 You can get more information at: 00:26:41.70\00:26:43.54 Modern views of evolution stem all the way back 00:26:53.72\00:26:56.33 to theories developed in the mid-1800s. 00:26:56.36\00:26:58.75 Out of the same time period came ideas that shape 00:26:59.42\00:27:02.72 our educational system today. 00:27:02.75\00:27:05.00 The Common School Movement, for example, 00:27:05.54\00:27:07.81 saw schools more like a factory, 00:27:08.27\00:27:10.18 with students blindly memorizing instruction 00:27:10.19\00:27:12.84 rather than thinking for themselves. 00:27:12.87\00:27:14.84 Their curriculum was rigid and theoretical. 00:27:15.39\00:27:17.84 Instead of being flexible and practical, 00:27:17.85\00:27:20.69 it was designed to conform the individual 00:27:20.84\00:27:23.33 into a specific ideological mold 00:27:23.42\00:27:25.87 that fit the needs of an old industrial era 00:27:26.21\00:27:28.66 long since passed. 00:27:28.67\00:27:30.15 Just like our view of creation in six literal days, 00:27:31.42\00:27:34.66 we believe the Bible contains an educational blueprint 00:27:34.75\00:27:38.75 radically different from the one we see now. 00:27:39.12\00:27:41.48 Well friends, that's it for today. 00:27:54.75\00:27:56.30 Pick up the phone and give us a call at: 00:27:56.36\00:27:57.69 And may the Lord richly bless you 00:28:01.48\00:28:03.69 in all ways. 00:28:03.70\00:28:05.72
