Hi friends, and welcome to
another edition of NEWSTART NOW.
00:00:23.84\00:00:26.87
We have in our studio
with us today Carol Higgins,
00:00:27.30\00:00:30.42
all the way from Africa.
00:00:30.84\00:00:32.30
And I'd like to
show you a clip when she
00:00:32.63\00:00:34.51
first arrived here
at the NEWSTART program.
00:00:34.52\00:00:37.00
Well I had a friend,
00:00:38.54\00:00:40.45
that was here a
couple months ago,
00:00:41.27\00:00:43.15
and he and I have
been trying to lose
00:00:43.60\00:00:45.33
weight together
for many many years.
00:00:45.34\00:00:47.51
I have some arthritis
and some digestive issues,
00:00:48.03\00:00:51.06
low blood sugar problems.
00:00:51.18\00:00:52.57
So I just don't want to
go into being a diabetic.
00:00:52.72\00:00:55.57
The nutritionist tells me I
need to lose about 70 pounds,
00:00:56.12\00:00:59.72
and I'm hoping to gain a better
00:01:00.42\00:01:03.30
understanding of how
to eat properly. Yeah.
00:01:03.45\00:01:06.30
Sixty-six years has
gotten me this body!
00:01:06.75\00:01:09.18
I don't want to
finish out my life
00:01:09.63\00:01:11.51
with this body the way it is.
00:01:11.52\00:01:13.60
That's kind of bottom
line-- I'm ready for a change.
00:01:14.78\00:01:17.33
Welcome back friends,
and in our studio, Carol.
00:01:20.48\00:01:23.00
How are you,
dear? Good to see you!
00:01:23.30\00:01:25.15
Fine, thank you.
00:01:25.48\00:01:26.51
Yeah, now I want to get right
into this interview, because
00:01:26.72\00:01:29.54
I know you shared with us
before we went on the air here
00:01:29.84\00:01:33.21
that you've gone
through some incredible changes.
00:01:33.81\00:01:36.54
Can you speak to us about that?
00:01:37.09\00:01:38.63
Well, if I can get
over these tears...
00:01:39.42\00:01:41.63
Ah! Sorry!
00:01:41.81\00:01:43.69
Yes, I have...
00:01:44.00\00:01:45.60
I have really
experienced some change,
00:01:45.75\00:01:47.75
and I was thinking today
if you could only measure
00:01:47.76\00:01:50.84
attitude in milligrams
or inches or something,
00:01:52.12\00:01:56.60
that I've probably grown
quite a few inches this...
00:01:57.15\00:02:00.63
this week, these
last two and a half weeks,
00:02:01.12\00:02:04.12
because my attitude
has changed so much.
00:02:04.21\00:02:07.33
So what I'm hearing you say is
00:02:07.75\00:02:09.18
that maybe you
have a little hope?
00:02:09.19\00:02:11.27
I have a lot of hope!
00:02:11.66\00:02:13.06
Because looking at golden years,
00:02:13.63\00:02:16.36
you... you...
00:02:16.51\00:02:18.06
I have hope that my golden
years will be happy instead of
00:02:18.63\00:02:22.09
depressing.
00:02:22.72\00:02:24.84
So...
00:02:26.00\00:02:27.45
what are these tears about,
00:02:27.51\00:02:28.78
other than that hope?
00:02:29.30\00:02:30.33
You were
experiencing some good changes.
00:02:31.00\00:02:33.72
Can you tell us about that?
00:02:33.73\00:02:34.84
I can. I have a
vocational school
00:02:35.15\00:02:37.84
in Uganda at the orphanage.
00:02:37.87\00:02:39.63
And I was thinking about this
00:02:40.66\00:02:42.24
because when the
kids come in to us as...
00:02:42.25\00:02:45.36
they're hopeless because
they've failed in school,
00:02:45.72\00:02:48.75
and what's left for
them is vocational school.
00:02:48.76\00:02:51.51
And so they come
in, and I try to get...
00:02:52.24\00:02:54.48
I try--in the first week I try
to have them experience success.
00:02:54.81\00:02:59.24
And...
00:02:59.54\00:03:01.03
And at the end of the
year they are standing tall.
00:03:01.84\00:03:06.18
And now I have experienced
00:03:06.30\00:03:08.54
coming someplace
where I felt hopeless,
00:03:08.72\00:03:11.84
and I'm standing tall.
00:03:12.30\00:03:14.39
- God bless you.
00:03:14.84\00:03:16.45
My blood sugar
is down, and my...
00:03:16.60\00:03:20.48
ah, my...what do you
call it? Tri... not--
00:03:21.03\00:03:24.36
- Triglycerides?
00:03:24.54\00:03:25.69
Cholesterol? -
Cholesterol is down.
00:03:26.24\00:03:28.27
- Down? Yes. - My pulse is down.
00:03:28.28\00:03:30.72
And... - And you're up!
00:03:31.18\00:03:32.48
And I'm up! That's right!
00:03:32.66\00:03:34.66
- All these things
are down and you're up!
00:03:34.84\00:03:36.51
I've only lost four pounds,
but I've lost three inches.
00:03:36.69\00:03:40.27
- My word. - And I'm just...
00:03:40.72\00:03:42.24
I'm excited that I'm on a...
00:03:42.84\00:03:45.00
I'm on a good path.
00:03:45.51\00:03:46.81
And I want to exercise.
00:03:47.21\00:03:48.72
I was not
exercising at all before.
00:03:48.73\00:03:51.09
And I was actually...
00:03:51.66\00:03:53.84
dancing down the
path the other day!
00:03:54.48\00:03:56.48
It was very exciting
to have energy again.
00:03:57.69\00:04:00.27
- Oh, praise God.
00:04:00.54\00:04:02.48
You know, did Dr.
Lukens tell you about
00:04:03.12\00:04:05.09
the lady we had
come through the program
00:04:05.10\00:04:07.30
that lost four dress
sizes and didn't lose a pound?
00:04:07.48\00:04:12.09
I like that.
00:04:12.21\00:04:13.60
- Well you're just,
you're sharing again that
00:04:13.75\00:04:16.87
your body, when it
gets in the condition
00:04:17.09\00:04:20.12
it's quote "supposed" to be in,
00:04:20.18\00:04:22.21
the body that God gave us,
00:04:22.30\00:04:24.39
then it doesn't
necessarily have to lose weight,
00:04:24.69\00:04:27.81
but you start shrinking.
00:04:28.00\00:04:29.21
It happened to me, as well.
00:04:29.39\00:04:31.21
So what else?
00:04:31.24\00:04:32.45
What else did you like about
00:04:32.46\00:04:34.00
being here at
the NEWSTART program?
00:04:34.01\00:04:35.72
Well, I always thought that
00:04:36.00\00:04:37.72
people that ate
tofu were really weird.
00:04:37.84\00:04:41.30
- [laughter]
00:04:41.31\00:04:42.51
- Some of us are a little weird!
00:04:42.54\00:04:44.03
- Yeah.
00:04:44.09\00:04:45.12
And now I'm eating
tofu and making it.
00:04:45.24\00:04:48.21
- Oh no! - Fixing it myself...
00:04:48.24\00:04:49.78
I hope you don't think
that you're getting weird on us.
00:04:50.03\00:04:52.24
I'm afraid I am. - Okay.
00:04:52.51\00:04:54.18
- Well, God bless
you for being weird.
00:04:54.24\00:04:55.78
Yep. If this is what
weird's about, I'm okay.
00:04:55.84\00:04:58.63
- Good, good.
00:04:58.78\00:05:00.21
So you see
vegans and vegetarians
00:05:00.30\00:05:04.42
in a whole new light.
00:05:04.51\00:05:05.81
I do, yeah.
00:05:06.12\00:05:07.66
I'm excited to be able to
00:05:07.72\00:05:12.06
and they're already
asking questions, so...
00:05:12.15\00:05:14.39
That's what I'm hoping for,
00:05:14.63\00:05:16.45
is for them to ask
questions without me having to
00:05:16.48\00:05:19.54
say, "Do this, do that."
00:05:19.78\00:05:21.45
Because they'll listen
if they're asking questions.
00:05:21.66\00:05:24.15
Now I introduced you as
coming all the way from Africa,
00:05:24.24\00:05:28.09
from Uganda,
00:05:28.15\00:05:29.51
and on the screen
during the first interview
00:05:29.69\00:05:33.84
it said you were
from Oregon. - Mhmm.
00:05:34.00\00:05:35.81
Is that where your
US home is, in Oregon?
00:05:35.87\00:05:39.42
That's where we're from,
00:05:39.51\00:05:40.57
and that's where our
ministry is based from.
00:05:40.58\00:05:43.15
- And how long
have you been in Africa?
00:05:43.21\00:05:45.18
We've been there
11 years this month.
00:05:45.54\00:05:47.75
- Wow. - Mhmm.
00:05:48.06\00:05:49.12
What a ministry,
to help these poor,
00:05:49.13\00:05:51.39
underprivileged children.
00:05:51.40\00:05:53.00
- It is.
00:05:53.12\00:05:54.15
- Its' probably the
toughest thing we've ever done,
00:05:54.51\00:05:57.27
but the most fruitful.
00:05:57.30\00:05:59.06
And we're opening a
new cafe when we get back,
00:05:59.24\00:06:02.12
when I get back,
00:06:02.18\00:06:03.18
and it's gonna be...
00:06:03.24\00:06:04.48
vegan.
00:06:05.12\00:06:06.27
Right on. [laughter]
00:06:06.69\00:06:08.36
You'll bring
something to these...
00:06:08.48\00:06:10.00
- We're going to
start it that way,
00:06:10.01\00:06:11.33
so we don't have
anything to change.
00:06:11.36\00:06:13.24
Wonderful,
wonderful. - Yep. We'll try it.
00:06:13.36\00:06:15.57
See what happens.
00:06:15.60\00:06:16.66
Okay, so I want to
talk about the staff here,
00:06:16.75\00:06:18.42
because we haven't
said anything about them.
00:06:18.54\00:06:20.36
You've met of course
00:06:20.54\00:06:22.48
everyone on staff,
that is the NEWSTART staff.
00:06:22.72\00:06:26.60
Can you say anything
about Viola, for instance,
00:06:27.00\00:06:31.78
our chaplain?
00:06:31.87\00:06:33.00
Oh, she is such a dear spirit.
00:06:33.27\00:06:37.09
I just love her so much,
00:06:37.27\00:06:39.57
and she's gentle,
and listened to me,
00:06:39.63\00:06:43.09
and just ministered to me.
00:06:43.21\00:06:45.00
Her teachings were...
00:06:45.15\00:06:46.72
were right on for me
00:06:47.24\00:06:49.18
and ministered to me.
00:06:49.33\00:06:51.15
- Alright. - Yeah.
00:06:51.27\00:06:53.21
- Commitment.
00:06:53.24\00:06:54.30
Commitment? - Mhmm.
00:06:54.39\00:06:56.39
That's the bottom line.
00:06:56.78\00:06:58.48
What about the
exercise that you learned here?
00:06:59.39\00:07:03.33
Did you learn how to do
some new things with your body?
00:07:03.48\00:07:06.63
I did. I didn't know I
could do some of those things.
00:07:06.84\00:07:09.69
Some of them I'm
still working on.
00:07:10.21\00:07:12.12
It's not working like it should.
00:07:12.42\00:07:14.63
But yeah, I'm
stretching and exercising,
00:07:15.15\00:07:19.15
and Jerry and Rick
were both fun to follow.
00:07:19.36\00:07:23.81
Now, what was your favorite part
00:07:24.48\00:07:27.60
of your stay here so far?
00:07:27.69\00:07:29.51
Sally in the kitchen,
00:07:30.48\00:07:32.36
I think, has really put
wings to the whole program,
00:07:32.63\00:07:36.87
because without the
teaching of cooking,
00:07:37.00\00:07:39.69
how...
00:07:40.24\00:07:41.42
how would we
know how to do this?
00:07:41.69\00:07:44.27
And the food was so wonderful.
00:07:44.39\00:07:47.36
You know, Sally's
been here like 25 years.
00:07:47.48\00:07:50.63
And she is the
cooking school instructor
00:07:50.84\00:07:54.51
Sally Christensen.
00:07:54.60\00:07:56.15
Some of you already know her,
00:07:56.24\00:07:58.12
but some of you
are going to meet her
00:07:58.27\00:08:00.21
in the not-too-distant future.
00:08:00.22\00:08:01.66
She's absolutely marvelous,
what she does in the kitchen.
00:08:01.75\00:08:05.36
By the way, we have a
Reversing Diabetes program
00:08:05.75\00:08:09.24
beginning May 31.
00:08:09.42\00:08:11.39
I don't know if this
will broadcast by then,
00:08:11.51\00:08:13.72
but Sally will be participating
00:08:14.00\00:08:16.51
with Neva Brackett
in the cooking lectures
00:08:16.57\00:08:20.39
that will be going on there.
00:08:20.48\00:08:21.75
I bought Neva's books.
I'm excited about...that.
00:08:22.09\00:08:26.09
- Yes, good for you!
00:08:26.18\00:08:27.48
You know what I
really liked about the staff
00:08:27.63\00:08:30.06
is that the doctors walked,
00:08:30.15\00:08:32.78
they ate with us
and talked with us.
00:08:33.21\00:08:35.15
We had access to them.
00:08:35.24\00:08:37.06
Literally--I've never been
able to ask a doctor just...
00:08:37.36\00:08:40.81
simple little
stuff, you know? - Yeah!
00:08:41.18\00:08:43.63
They were accessible
to us, and they loved us,
00:08:44.03\00:08:46.60
and they prayed with us.
00:08:46.87\00:08:48.30
That's pretty amazing.
00:08:49.15\00:08:50.54
What Carol is saying is
00:08:50.78\00:08:52.63
not only true, but I want
to elaborate a little bit.
00:08:52.72\00:08:55.63
Because usually
we go to a doctor and
00:08:55.87\00:08:58.09
we sign in, then
the nurse calls us in.
00:08:58.10\00:09:01.18
She takes our blood pressure and
00:09:01.27\00:09:02.81
maybe looks in our ear
or our eye or whatever,
00:09:03.03\00:09:05.30
and the the doc comes
in, spends 5 minutes--
00:09:05.31\00:09:07.51
that's it!
00:09:07.54\00:09:08.81
Well here the
doctors will eat with you,
00:09:08.84\00:09:11.15
because they eat
with the guests every day,
00:09:11.24\00:09:13.33
all three meals.
00:09:13.48\00:09:15.03
Not necessarily do we
advise three meals for everyone,
00:09:15.24\00:09:18.63
but they're there-- they
make themselves available.
00:09:18.64\00:09:21.36
And after your
interview with the doctor,
00:09:21.60\00:09:24.75
I know that they take us out--
00:09:24.81\00:09:27.24
they took you out, I'm sure--
00:09:27.36\00:09:28.81
and walked on the trail.
00:09:29.09\00:09:30.27
And what they do
is that they observe,
00:09:30.42\00:09:32.24
make sure that
you're not strenu--you know,
00:09:32.30\00:09:34.72
hurting yourself, basically.
00:09:34.81\00:09:36.81
- So I think that's wonderful.
00:09:37.51\00:09:39.00
I thought that was
just... the cat's meow.
00:09:39.06\00:09:42.18
You know, another thing is,
00:09:42.24\00:09:44.15
I did change.
00:09:44.21\00:09:45.39
The first day, I changed
to eating only 2 meals a day.
00:09:45.40\00:09:49.12
And I was AMAZED
00:09:49.39\00:09:52.00
that I wasn't
hungry the next morning.
00:09:52.12\00:09:54.63
I was amazed! - Yes!
00:09:54.78\00:09:57.15
And I haven't
eaten any meal at night,
00:09:57.18\00:10:00.63
except when we went
to Doctor Lukens' house
00:10:00.69\00:10:02.66
that night for fellowship.
00:10:02.67\00:10:04.45
And I was hungry
the next morning.
00:10:05.00\00:10:07.21
And no snacks in between, right?
00:10:07.42\00:10:09.03
No, I had no contraband.
00:10:09.15\00:10:10.75
- [laughter] No M&Ms.
00:10:10.76\00:10:13.09
Nope. Nope.
00:10:13.24\00:10:14.78
Well Carol,
we've run out of time.
00:10:15.03\00:10:16.51
I want to thank
you for being here.
00:10:16.66\00:10:18.45
God bless you in
your work in Africa.
00:10:18.60\00:10:21.48
And friends, thank
you for joining us,
00:10:21.51\00:10:23.33
but don't go away!
00:10:23.36\00:10:24.45
Because we're going to interview
Doctor Lukens in just a moment.
00:10:24.51\00:10:28.06
Well, you've done very well.
00:10:29.21\00:10:30.84
Do you have diabetes,
00:10:37.27\00:10:38.54
heart disease,
high blood pressure,
00:10:38.55\00:10:40.63
or do you weigh too much?
00:10:41.18\00:10:42.48
Hi, my name is Dr. Ing,
and I'd like to tell you
00:10:43.36\00:10:46.15
about our 18-day
NEWSTART lifestyle program.
00:10:46.16\00:10:49.12
It includes a
comprehensive medical evaluation
00:10:49.75\00:10:52.48
with laboratory studies
and an exercise stress test,
00:10:52.49\00:10:55.78
physician consultations,
00:10:56.33\00:10:58.06
culinary school,
00:10:58.69\00:10:59.87
and an opportunity to
walk on beautiful trails
00:11:00.42\00:11:03.36
in the foothills of the Sierras.
00:11:03.37\00:11:05.36
Your health is one of the most
00:11:07.42\00:11:08.84
important things
that you have. Don't wait.

00:11:16.21\00:11:17.45
Welcome back, friends,
and as I promised, Dr. Lukens.
00:11:35.27\00:11:39.12
It's always so good to see you.
00:11:39.13\00:11:41.33
We've got some
exciting people here, huh?
00:11:41.51\00:11:43.27
Yes we do, and I--
00:11:43.60\00:11:44.69
- And they're excited. And
you're excited, I can tell!
00:11:44.70\00:11:47.60
We're going to be
talking about Carol,
00:11:47.61\00:11:50.27
and I want to get
into the situation of
00:11:50.33\00:11:54.36
hypoglycemia. You call
it something different?
00:11:54.51\00:11:57.39
- Can you talk about that?
00:11:57.42\00:11:58.45
Yeah, the...the
term... - Reactive?
00:11:58.51\00:12:00.42
Yeah, reactive hypoglycemia.
00:12:00.54\00:12:02.45
- Yeah, tell us what that means.
00:12:02.63\00:12:04.15
Well what's happening is that
00:12:04.36\00:12:05.81
a person generally
will be overweight,
00:12:06.06\00:12:08.54
and one of the things
that they tell them to do is
00:12:08.72\00:12:12.36
eat every two hours.
00:12:12.51\00:12:14.33
Now you can imagine
what a good thing that is
00:12:14.60\00:12:17.15
for your digestive system,
00:12:17.16\00:12:19.51
and how easy it is to
take care of your weight
00:12:19.78\00:12:22.36
when you're on that, you know.
00:12:22.45\00:12:24.33
But I had a
cousin that had that,
00:12:24.51\00:12:26.15
and what they have,
00:12:26.18\00:12:27.33
is they end up by
doing this, but...
00:12:27.51\00:12:31.51
because of their
being overweight,
00:12:31.66\00:12:33.81
and it's kind of
like pre-diabetes,
00:12:33.87\00:12:35.57
frequently they go
into full diabetes.
00:12:35.63\00:12:37.72
And she realizes
that possibility is there.
00:12:37.75\00:12:40.21
The insulin goes
more and more and more,
00:12:40.45\00:12:43.63
and so after a while,
00:12:43.64\00:12:45.24
when they keep pouring
out more and more insulin,
00:12:45.36\00:12:48.72
then their pancreas
is going to wear out
00:12:48.87\00:12:51.09
because it's overused.
00:12:51.10\00:12:52.54
And then they won't be
able to keep the insulin enough
00:12:52.87\00:12:57.06
so that it can help them
when they're still overweight.
00:12:57.09\00:13:00.15
So we come back to it again.
00:13:00.45\00:13:02.03
What's the answer to diabetes?
00:13:02.15\00:13:04.15
- Weight loss. Okay.
00:13:04.42\00:13:06.33
How do you get rid
of it? Lose the weight.
00:13:06.63\00:13:09.09
How do you lose
the weight? Exercise.
00:13:09.24\00:13:11.72
Well how do you get
rid of hypoglycemia?
00:13:12.09\00:13:15.15
Three to five miles a day,
00:13:15.33\00:13:17.39
eating whole plant
foods, and that's it.
00:13:17.66\00:13:19.81
If it's not going down,
00:13:20.24\00:13:22.00
then there's something
wrong with your program.
00:13:22.18\00:13:24.33
So how about this
hypoglycemia thing?
00:13:24.42\00:13:26.84
Reactive. It's reactive because
00:13:27.00\00:13:29.09
there's so much insulin that's
coming into the situation.
00:13:29.15\00:13:31.84
- How do you slow it down?
00:13:32.00\00:13:33.09
Well, you don't.
00:13:33.45\00:13:35.27
Because the body's
going to respond when you eat
00:13:35.60\00:13:38.09
simple carbohydrates.
00:13:38.27\00:13:40.12
And it raises your blood sugar.
00:13:40.69\00:13:42.66
Your body's going to respond.
00:13:43.03\00:13:44.21
It doesn't want that
blood sugar to be high.
00:13:44.33\00:13:46.42
because if it continues on
being high and high and high,
00:13:46.54\00:13:49.45
then after a
while you start getting
00:13:49.48\00:13:51.45
the problems that
the diabetics get.
00:13:51.60\00:13:53.87
And so the
insulin comes surging in,
00:13:54.33\00:13:57.57
and you know, a
half hour, an hour,
00:13:57.66\00:14:00.18
maybe longer after
you've finished your meal,
00:14:00.36\00:14:04.24
your blood sugar
starts going down,
00:14:04.48\00:14:06.42
and it goes
down and down, and...
00:14:06.48\00:14:07.81
it reaches a normal level.
00:14:07.84\00:14:09.63
And then it goes
down lower and lower.
00:14:09.75\00:14:11.63
And pretty soon you
start feeling anxious,
00:14:11.66\00:14:14.39
you start feeling clammy,
00:14:14.51\00:14:16.57
you start feeling jittery,
00:14:16.72\00:14:18.69
and you start feeling nauseated.
00:14:19.03\00:14:21.18
What is this from?
00:14:21.19\00:14:22.45
It's because when our
blood sugar gets too low,
00:14:22.48\00:14:26.24
then adrenalin starts pouring in
00:14:26.48\00:14:29.12
because that will
raise the blood sugar.
00:14:29.30\00:14:31.45
And there you go--
you're on this cycle.
00:14:31.60\00:14:33.57
And my cousin had to
quit teaching for a while,
00:14:33.81\00:14:36.24
because she would
get sick headaches,
00:14:36.39\00:14:38.69
she would actually throw up.
00:14:39.06\00:14:42.21
Sometimes in front of
the class she would pass out
00:14:42.45\00:14:45.30
and just fall to the floor.
00:14:45.54\00:14:46.75
I mean, what kind of...?
00:14:46.76\00:14:47.87
How can you teach
a class like that?
00:14:48.09\00:14:50.00
This lady is a
wonderful missionary
00:14:50.06\00:14:52.84
over in Uganda, and
she's seen some things
00:14:53.06\00:14:55.63
that you would never
even want to hear about.
00:14:55.75\00:14:58.03
But she's gotten
all these orphan kids,
00:14:58.09\00:15:00.57
and she's brought them in,
00:15:00.63\00:15:03.57
and it's a wonderful thing.
00:15:03.58\00:15:04.69
There's over 200
orphans that are there.
00:15:04.70\00:15:06.69
And it keeps building!
00:15:06.72\00:15:08.21
But here she is, she's got
all these responsibilities,
00:15:08.24\00:15:10.84
all this stuff
that she has to do,
00:15:11.09\00:15:12.84
and she gets these
reactive hypoglycemia spells.
00:15:12.87\00:15:16.87
And she didn't know what to do,
00:15:17.24\00:15:19.54
and they're getting
worse, and things are a problem.
00:15:19.72\00:15:23.72
Since she came here and is
on the whole plant foods whole,
00:15:24.12\00:15:27.12
she doesn't have
those big sugar surges.
00:15:27.24\00:15:29.45
She's only had
that reaction once.
00:15:29.54\00:15:31.81
Wonderful. - And so, and...
00:15:32.33\00:15:33.75
And she's thrilled.
00:15:34.09\00:15:35.18
- Praise God. -
She's thrilled about that.
00:15:35.30\00:15:37.21
Yeah, that's thrilling!
00:15:37.51\00:15:38.81
I keep telling
everybody, "Lose the weight,
00:15:39.18\00:15:41.63
and the diabetes will
go away. Lose the weight,
00:15:41.75\00:15:43.72
your reactive
hypoglycemia will go away."
00:15:43.81\00:15:46.27
- And so the person says,
00:15:46.45\00:15:48.09
"How do you do that?" you know.
00:15:48.27\00:15:49.66
So--is she losing weight?
00:15:49.67\00:15:51.66
She hasn't lost hardly any.
00:15:51.72\00:15:53.24
Is she getting
healthier? You bet she is.
00:15:53.48\00:15:56.24
And so she's excited about that.
00:15:56.57\00:15:58.45
What will happen as she
continues on with this program?
00:15:58.72\00:16:02.00
The weight will come off.
00:16:02.24\00:16:03.84
And as it does, this
will be a thing of the past.
00:16:04.39\00:16:07.81
Also she's complaining
about the knees, the hips,
00:16:08.18\00:16:12.54
and all the
weight on the joints,
00:16:12.87\00:16:14.36
the osteoarthritis
and those kind of things.
00:16:14.42\00:16:16.78
What is that from?
00:16:17.12\00:16:19.03
- Too much weight.
00:16:20.24\00:16:21.60
It's gotta be weight.
00:16:21.61\00:16:22.60
- Pushing down on those
and grinding those joints.
00:16:22.63\00:16:24.66
So there it goes back to that.
00:16:25.06\00:16:27.09
The...
00:16:27.15\00:16:28.27
I don't know how
it is, because Africa
00:16:28.36\00:16:30.21
is becoming Westernized now.
00:16:30.22\00:16:31.78
And I'm understanding
that people over there now--
00:16:32.00\00:16:34.36
see this is 20
years since I was there.
00:16:34.57\00:16:36.60
I only saw two heart attacks.
00:16:36.78\00:16:38.45
Two heart attacks in
15 years of practice.
00:16:38.66\00:16:42.42
And now they say
00:16:42.66\00:16:44.30
no, they're having
heart attacks over there,
00:16:44.31\00:16:46.45
and people are
having diabetes over there,
00:16:46.60\00:16:49.66
and some of the
countries are eating
00:16:50.03\00:16:51.51
a lot of beef
and stuff like that.
00:16:51.52\00:16:53.57
They're going to
have real problems.
00:16:53.84\00:16:55.87
They already have--
they're starting to have that.
00:16:56.18\00:16:58.57
With regards to Carol now,
00:16:59.15\00:17:00.60
you say that she needs
to continue to lose weight.
00:17:01.09\00:17:04.06
But I also have
heard you say that
00:17:04.27\00:17:06.69
she's come down
a couple of sizes.
00:17:06.87\00:17:09.15
and not lost a whole
lot. - No, I don't know that.
00:17:09.45\00:17:11.54
You know, when they measure her,
00:17:11.72\00:17:13.48
but she's... her
clothes are fitting
00:17:13.54\00:17:16.03
a little bit better, yeah.
00:17:16.15\00:17:17.42
Yeah, she even said that to me.
00:17:17.63\00:17:19.54
- Yeah. - Uh, so...
00:17:19.72\00:17:21.09
- And so, they'll...
00:17:21.24\00:17:22.69
You know, it's not
unusual for a person to come in,
00:17:22.75\00:17:25.63
and that's that-- We've
talked about this before,
00:17:25.84\00:17:28.00
the metabolic thing,
00:17:28.15\00:17:29.45
where you have the big girth
and the high blood pressure,
00:17:29.72\00:17:32.45
and then your blood
sugars aren't under control,
00:17:32.57\00:17:34.84
your
cholesterol's out of control,
00:17:34.87\00:17:36.42
and your
triglycerides are too high.
00:17:36.66\00:17:38.21
That's the five
different things, you see?
00:17:38.33\00:17:40.30
And her cholesterol
when she came in was like
00:17:40.45\00:17:42.78
250 plus.
00:17:43.12\00:17:45.06
And it's down 30, and that's...
00:17:45.07\00:17:48.84
that's pretty good for
somebody who's overweight.
00:17:49.33\00:17:51.84
Especially the women.
They don't tend to lose
00:17:52.24\00:17:55.03
their cholesterol
and their weight as fast
00:17:55.48\00:17:58.36
as the men can.
00:17:58.54\00:18:00.09
So what advice do
you have for our viewers
00:18:00.42\00:18:02.84
that they can practice
00:18:02.85\00:18:04.48
in their own
homes, on a daily basis?
00:18:04.87\00:18:07.57
Well see, what we've got is
we've got people here that...
00:18:08.24\00:18:12.06
If she's got the
pain in her joints,
00:18:12.24\00:18:14.21
what is she going to do?
00:18:14.36\00:18:15.45
Is she going to
feel like going out there
00:18:15.51\00:18:16.81
and doing all these miles?
00:18:16.87\00:18:18.33
Not exactly. - [chuckle]
00:18:18.75\00:18:20.69
We have some people
here that because of
00:18:20.81\00:18:23.06
their back and
their neck and so forth,
00:18:23.07\00:18:25.12
they really...they can't--
00:18:25.18\00:18:26.78
They don't even feel that
they can do upper arm exercises
00:18:26.79\00:18:30.27
with like a 2-pound
weight in each hand.
00:18:30.57\00:18:33.36
And that's some of the
things that they can do.
00:18:33.57\00:18:35.48
Some people can get
on a stationary bike.
00:18:35.57\00:18:38.39
But as we see people do this,
00:18:38.45\00:18:40.60
as they get into
this kind of a dietary,
00:18:40.66\00:18:45.06
it's anti-inflammatory.
00:18:45.30\00:18:47.24
And those pains can go away.
00:18:47.51\00:18:49.42
They can go away...
start going away within
00:18:49.43\00:18:52.24
a few days or weeks.
00:18:52.36\00:18:54.09
And we've had
people that came in
00:18:54.39\00:18:56.33
with bone on bone,
00:18:56.42\00:18:59.00
and they say, "Well, there's
nothing I can do about that."
00:18:59.18\00:19:02.30
Yes, there is.
00:19:02.36\00:19:03.48
The inflammation
and the pain goes down
00:19:03.57\00:19:06.09
and then they start putting
some fibrous tissue in there,
00:19:06.12\00:19:09.72
and after a while,
00:19:10.00\00:19:11.18
they don't have to
have that joint replaced.
00:19:11.21\00:19:13.12
It takes time,
it takes patience,
00:19:13.18\00:19:15.33
but as she can exercise...
00:19:15.39\00:19:17.51
But you have to start somewhere.
00:19:17.63\00:19:19.03
I told one of my
patients just today,
00:19:19.04\00:19:20.69
"Walk 50 steps,
00:19:20.70\00:19:23.00
turn around, and
walk 50 steps back,
00:19:23.15\00:19:26.30
and then sit, relax.
00:19:26.42\00:19:29.06
Get up again in 15 minutes
00:19:29.84\00:19:31.69
and do that over again."
00:19:32.00\00:19:33.30
We have people come in
in a wheelchair, on oxygen,
00:19:33.39\00:19:36.72
in pain,
00:19:37.00\00:19:38.51
and away they go at
the end of the program.
00:19:38.78\00:19:41.36
They're walking the
Half-Mile Loop, some of them.
00:19:41.45\00:19:43.69
Some of them are walking less.
00:19:44.03\00:19:45.60
But they're getting started.
00:19:45.81\00:19:47.57
And we know that as
a person does that...
00:19:48.00\00:19:50.24
In three months,
they've done things where
00:19:50.42\00:19:52.45
people can get
out of assisted living
00:19:52.54\00:19:54.51
for an extra 10 or 12 years.
00:19:54.52\00:19:57.60
I mean, that's unheard of.
00:19:58.00\00:19:59.30
- So you're saying
exercise is cumulative.
00:19:59.39\00:20:01.87
You don't have to walk
for long periods of time
00:20:02.24\00:20:04.84
necessarily, as
long as you get started?
00:20:05.06\00:20:07.39
Is that what you're
saying? - Yeah, and...and...
00:20:07.48\00:20:08.51
when you're exercising,
00:20:08.66\00:20:10.81
your metabolic rate is
going up, and your muscles
00:20:10.87\00:20:15.78
for the next 24 hours
are going to burn more sugar
00:20:16.12\00:20:19.24
than they did if
you're sedentary.
00:20:19.33\00:20:20.84
Muscles are really happy to
take sugar out of the blood.
00:20:21.09\00:20:23.84
When they need
it, they'll get it,
00:20:23.87\00:20:25.84
and they're after it.
00:20:26.06\00:20:27.45
But you know, I thought, well...
00:20:27.72\00:20:28.84
I knew that that
the overweight diabetic
00:20:29.03\00:20:32.81
was somebody
that their pancreas...
00:20:33.09\00:20:34.78
we've got things that'll
00:20:34.87\00:20:35.87
whip it again, whip it again,
00:20:36.00\00:20:38.03
and make more and more insulin.
00:20:38.12\00:20:39.54
That's not what they need.
00:20:39.63\00:20:40.84
This lady doesn't
have diabetes yet.
00:20:41.00\00:20:43.21
But her insulin
is surging in there,
00:20:43.30\00:20:45.51
and now her life...
00:20:45.60\00:20:47.00
her life is miserable at times
00:20:47.01\00:20:50.81
because she has these things.
00:20:51.06\00:20:52.48
If you're
nauseated, if you're...
00:20:52.54\00:20:54.48
if you're just
feeling terrible and anxious
00:20:54.81\00:20:58.18
and your blood
sugar is dropping so low
00:20:58.27\00:21:00.36
that you're just
shaky and sweaty,
00:21:00.37\00:21:02.15
I mean, what are you gonna do?
00:21:02.30\00:21:03.57
That's all you can think
about until that's passed.
00:21:03.60\00:21:06.12
That's like
life-threatening. - Yep.
00:21:06.36\00:21:08.78
So any last words of advice?
00:21:08.87\00:21:11.18
Do this if you have
reactive hypoglycemia.
00:21:11.39\00:21:14.36
Come and we'll help you out.
00:21:14.45\00:21:16.15
That's wonderful. -
It happens. It works.
00:21:16.33\00:21:18.09
It happens all the time.
- In a short period of time.
00:21:18.24\00:21:20.45
And I want to thank you
for joining us, Doctor Lukens.
00:21:21.09\00:21:23.72
It's always my pleasure.
00:21:23.73\00:21:25.12
- It's always good to see you.
00:21:25.24\00:21:26.51
- Yep, really good.
00:21:26.60\00:21:27.63
And thank you for
joining us, folks,
00:21:27.66\00:21:29.60
but don't go away.
00:21:29.61\00:21:30.66
We have an important tip
for you right after this.
00:21:30.69\00:21:33.39
Welcome to NEWSTART at Home.
00:21:47.87\00:21:49.36
I'm Dr. David DeRose.
00:21:49.37\00:21:50.72
Today we're
speaking about a problem
00:21:50.84\00:21:52.27
that's very common
in medical offices.
00:21:52.30\00:21:54.57
It's likely that you
or one of your loved ones
00:21:54.69\00:21:56.60
have experienced it.
00:21:56.66\00:21:57.78
The topic is frozen shoulder.
00:21:58.00\00:22:00.57
And with me is Jerry Flores.
00:22:00.72\00:22:02.57
Jerry is a therapist at Weimar
Center of Health and Education,
00:22:02.66\00:22:06.00
part of the NEWSTART program.
00:22:06.12\00:22:07.51
Jerry, do you see a lot of
problems with frozen shoulder?
00:22:07.52\00:22:10.66
Yes I do. As a matter of fact,
00:22:10.87\00:22:12.48
that's one that
comes in frequently.
00:22:12.63\00:22:15.36
And we do treat it.
00:22:15.63\00:22:17.30
The medical term is
adhesive capsulitis.
00:22:17.39\00:22:20.30
And the word 'adhesive'
00:22:20.45\00:22:22.00
means that things
just are like glue there.
00:22:22.09\00:22:25.30
They tighten up,
00:22:25.36\00:22:26.84
they atrophy,
00:22:27.18\00:22:28.66
and I'm going to
give one example.
00:22:28.67\00:22:30.18
For example, let's
say you break your arm.
00:22:30.33\00:22:32.36
You get it in a
cast. They cast it.
00:22:32.37\00:22:35.12
Two months later,
your broken bone is healed,
00:22:35.87\00:22:38.66
but you didn't use
your shoulder joint at all,
00:22:38.81\00:22:41.60
or very little.
00:22:41.72\00:22:43.12
And then you get up to
this to put on a shirt,
00:22:43.21\00:22:45.45
and all of a sudden, "Ouch!"
00:22:45.60\00:22:46.63
You can't go above there and
you've got excruciating pain.
00:22:46.66\00:22:49.48
Okay, so you're not...
00:22:49.78\00:22:51.15
A frozen shoulder
doesn't mean necessarily
00:22:51.30\00:22:53.12
that they just can't
move their shoulder at all.
00:22:53.18\00:22:54.81
They've just got severely
limited range of motion.
00:22:55.09\00:22:57.72
Yes, limited range of motion.
00:22:57.78\00:22:59.87
Usually, they could go up
to about 60 to 90 degrees,
00:23:00.15\00:23:04.15
but they can't go up above that,
00:23:04.16\00:23:05.72
the full 180
degrees, all the way up to...
00:23:05.73\00:23:08.54
your...ear. - Okay.
00:23:08.57\00:23:11.45
So Jerry, from our experience
00:23:11.54\00:23:13.39
it's very likely that many
of the folks tuning in today
00:23:13.42\00:23:16.30
either have some
shoulder limitations
00:23:16.42\00:23:18.45
or they know someone who does.
00:23:18.51\00:23:20.24
What can you do to help them?
00:23:20.33\00:23:21.75
What can they do at
home to get some help?
00:23:21.87\00:23:24.30
Right. Well, the first
thing that I'd like to do is,
00:23:24.42\00:23:26.78
it's a frozen shoulder, right?
00:23:26.79\00:23:28.66
So I just like to thaw it.
00:23:28.81\00:23:30.45
- Okay, fair enough.
00:23:30.72\00:23:31.81
- Thaw out the frozen shoulder.
00:23:32.03\00:23:33.27
You thaw out
the frozen shoulder.
00:23:33.28\00:23:34.69
So you just apply some heat.
00:23:34.70\00:23:36.24
A hot pack.
00:23:36.33\00:23:37.63
You take an epsom salt bath,
00:23:37.78\00:23:39.54
which is very good.
00:23:39.81\00:23:41.00
We know it relaxes muscles.
00:23:41.21\00:23:42.78
And that helps.
But then the key...
00:23:43.03\00:23:45.78
The key to...
00:23:46.03\00:23:49.18
helping a
frozen shoulder is that
00:23:49.27\00:23:51.63
you gotta use a simple formula,
00:23:51.75\00:23:53.42
for a comfort scale.
00:23:53.57\00:23:56.15
What I do is I teach
people how to use colors.
00:23:56.33\00:23:59.30
Red, yellow, and green.
00:23:59.87\00:24:03.00
- Just like a stop light.
- Just like a stops light.
00:24:03.12\00:24:05.06
Or...
00:24:05.18\00:24:06.30
green, yellow, and red.
00:24:06.78\00:24:08.48
Green - no discomfort at all.
00:24:08.66\00:24:11.00
Keep going.
00:24:11.06\00:24:12.09
Keep going, yes.
00:24:12.39\00:24:13.63
Yellow - warning!
00:24:13.87\00:24:15.45
But it's still okay to go,
00:24:15.51\00:24:17.45
and in this case
it would be 'move'.
00:24:17.51\00:24:19.45
And red, which means stop.
00:24:19.63\00:24:21.87
Too much discomfort,
00:24:22.12\00:24:23.51
therefore you don't continue
00:24:23.63\00:24:25.30
with the stretch
or with the pressure.
00:24:25.36\00:24:27.54
So, when you got
a frozen shoulder,
00:24:27.69\00:24:29.69
and you go up here
and it's okay, it's green.
00:24:29.84\00:24:33.18
But you raised it
up, it gets yellow,
00:24:33.36\00:24:35.09
and then just a little bit more
and it gets into the red zone.
00:24:35.24\00:24:37.84
That's where people
don't know what to do.
00:24:38.09\00:24:40.30
That's when we apply the heat,
00:24:40.39\00:24:42.09
and then just stretch
it out a little bit more.
00:24:42.15\00:24:44.48
And if you like,
00:24:44.57\00:24:46.39
we could
demonstrate a little bit on you.
00:24:46.45\00:24:48.12
- Oh sure, sure. - Sure? Okay.
00:24:48.21\00:24:49.84
So I'm going to take
Doctor DeRose's shoulder,
00:24:50.06\00:24:53.42
and let's say it was frozen.
00:24:53.51\00:24:55.42
And you tell me--
I'm going to raise it up,
00:24:55.48\00:24:57.69
and you tell me as soon
as it feels uncomfortable.
00:24:57.72\00:25:00.48
Am I supposed to make
believe I've got a bad shoulder?
00:25:00.49\00:25:02.63
- Yes. - AH!!! Ahhh!
00:25:02.64\00:25:04.03
Okay, right there.
00:25:04.06\00:25:05.33
We can't go past that
range of motion, right?
00:25:05.34\00:25:07.48
Assuming we already
applied the heat, right,
00:25:07.60\00:25:10.27
we got more blood
flowing there, more oxygen,
00:25:10.28\00:25:12.57
water, and nutrients.
00:25:12.66\00:25:13.87
So then what I do is I start...
00:25:13.88\00:25:16.39
Of course, you're
lying down on a table, right?
00:25:16.40\00:25:18.48
And what I do is I start
00:25:18.54\00:25:21.66
just moving it
just a little bit,
00:25:21.72\00:25:23.81
and I don't go past the yellow.
00:25:24.12\00:25:25.69
But then I do something.
00:25:26.00\00:25:27.24
- Okay, what do you
do? - I stretch it out.
00:25:27.25\00:25:29.12
And I let the
arm relax, and I go.
00:25:29.24\00:25:31.57
And I pull on the shoulder.
00:25:31.84\00:25:34.45
Okay, on the
shoulder joint, like this.
00:25:34.54\00:25:36.51
- If I were laying down I
wouldn't be moving so much.
00:25:36.52\00:25:38.48
Exactly. Right. - My
weight would keep me there.
00:25:38.49\00:25:39.84
So then that's
going to loosen up all the
00:25:40.03\00:25:41.60
tendons, ligaments, and muscles,
00:25:41.61\00:25:43.39
And that's going to allow
for further range of motion.
00:25:43.57\00:25:47.12
- Ah, ah... - Okay, we're there.
00:25:47.24\00:25:49.00
We got about a degree or two.
00:25:49.01\00:25:50.57
Just a little bit more.
00:25:50.81\00:25:52.03
So then what I
do is I like to push
00:25:52.24\00:25:54.72
the joint in, and rotate it.
00:25:54.78\00:25:58.03
And that breaks up a
little bit of the scar tissue
00:25:58.33\00:26:00.39
that has built up,
00:26:00.40\00:26:01.63
and it allows it
00:26:01.69\00:26:03.45
to gain a little
bit more mobility.
00:26:03.57\00:26:05.45
So once I'm doing that--
I'm done with doing that--
00:26:05.60\00:26:08.42
I'm able to go
00:26:08.45\00:26:10.06
and just stretch
a little bit more
00:26:10.12\00:26:11.51
and it stretches
a little bit more.
00:26:11.63\00:26:13.30
Until after about an hour,
an hour and a half of therapy,
00:26:13.54\00:26:17.03
in most cases,
00:26:17.18\00:26:18.30
I'm able to get about
160, and sometimes even
00:26:18.48\00:26:22.27
180 degrees in just one therapy.
00:26:22.33\00:26:24.84
but usually it takes
about 2 or 3 therapies
00:26:25.09\00:26:28.00
to solve this issue.
00:26:28.01\00:26:29.45
And so presumably
people could do this at home,
00:26:29.57\00:26:32.18
working on one another. - Yes.
00:26:32.24\00:26:34.72
Listen, I hope you found
some very practical information
00:26:34.81\00:26:37.51
on today's edition
of NEWSTART at Home.
00:26:37.69\00:26:39.54
If you want more
information, simply go to:
00:26:39.66\00:26:41.87
Modern views of
evolution stem all the way back
00:26:52.72\00:26:55.33
to theories
developed in the mid-1800s.
00:26:55.36\00:26:57.75
Out of the same time
period came ideas that shape
00:26:58.42\00:27:01.72
our educational system today.
00:27:01.75\00:27:04.00
The Common School
Movement, for example,
00:27:04.54\00:27:06.81
saw schools more like a factory,
00:27:07.27\00:27:09.18
with students blindly
memorizing instruction
00:27:09.19\00:27:11.84
rather than
thinking for themselves.
00:27:11.87\00:27:13.84
Their curriculum was
rigid and theoretical.
00:27:14.39\00:27:16.84
Instead of being
flexible and practical,
00:27:16.85\00:27:19.69
it was designed to
conform the individual
00:27:19.84\00:27:22.33
into a specific ideological mold
00:27:22.42\00:27:24.87
that fit the needs
of an old industrial era
00:27:25.21\00:27:27.66
long since passed.
00:27:27.67\00:27:29.15
Just like our view of
creation in six literal days,
00:27:30.42\00:27:33.66
we believe the Bible contains
an educational blueprint
00:27:33.75\00:27:37.75
radically different
from the one we see now.
00:27:38.12\00:27:40.48
Well, friends,
that's it for today.
