Hi friends, and welcome to another edition of NEWSTART NOW. 00:00:23.69\00:00:27.09 In our studio today we have Laura Dorans from 00:00:27.33\00:00:30.63 Elgin Illinois, just outside of Chicago I understand. 00:00:31.18\00:00:34.63 She came to us grieving somewhat, 00:00:35.81\00:00:39.12 but rather than me tell you about it, 00:00:39.57\00:00:41.45 lets look at a clip when she first arrived. 00:00:41.46\00:00:43.57 This past year has been incredibly stressful, 00:00:45.60\00:00:49.72 my husband had very advanced multiple sclerosis, 00:00:51.09\00:00:55.09 was wheelchair bound, 00:00:55.48\00:00:57.60 we ended up no longer being able to care for him at home, 00:00:58.15\00:01:01.60 and he died about a year ago. 00:01:02.21\00:01:04.78 Then actually several months after that 00:01:05.33\00:01:08.09 I was laid off, 00:01:08.27\00:01:10.27 I also ironically was diagnosed with MS myself. 00:01:11.75\00:01:16.54 He had it when I met him 25 years ago, 00:01:17.42\00:01:20.39 and I was diagnosed in 05. 00:01:20.40\00:01:22.39 The MS has affected me 00:01:22.75\00:01:26.33 people who get MS, have a wide variety of symptoms, 00:01:27.06\00:01:30.21 and for me it's been constant fatigue, 00:01:30.42\00:01:35.12 it has affected my memory 00:01:35.57\00:01:37.39 which used to be incredibly sharp, 00:01:37.40\00:01:39.72 that's a real frustration... 00:01:40.48\00:01:43.48 I have balance problems. 00:01:44.33\00:01:46.21 I want... 00:01:47.42\00:01:48.72 what I'm absolutely certain, God wants for me, 00:01:49.24\00:01:52.54 if I cooperate with him, 00:01:53.24\00:01:54.69 and that is-- good health. 00:01:54.84\00:01:56.72 Welcome back friends, and in our studio-- Laura how are you? 00:01:59.12\00:02:01.60 - I'm good thanks. - Good to see you. 00:02:01.72\00:02:03.72 - You too. 00:02:03.73\00:02:04.70 Ok, first question I got to ask, how's your memory? 00:02:04.71\00:02:07.81 Ah, let me think... 00:02:08.66\00:02:10.33 No! 00:02:10.51\00:02:11.63 You for get? - Right! Right! 00:02:11.75\00:02:13.69 How do you feel? 00:02:14.06\00:02:15.09 I feel good, I do. 00:02:15.42\00:02:17.51 I... 00:02:17.52\00:02:18.49 - Have you experienced some change since you've been here? 00:02:18.50\00:02:20.42 Definitely, I definitely feel 00:02:20.54\00:02:23.60 ah... as if I'm more well. 00:02:24.12\00:02:27.24 You know the whole idea of wellness 00:02:27.72\00:02:31.12 is so important, and 00:02:31.27\00:02:33.15 one of the things that a doctor told me years ago, who knew... 00:02:33.60\00:02:37.63 me and my family real closely. 00:02:38.18\00:02:41.27 He knew our situation with my husband being very ill, 00:02:42.63\00:02:45.84 and that I was taking care of him, and 00:02:45.85\00:02:48.18 the bread winner, and everything, 00:02:48.48\00:02:50.06 and our daughter. 00:02:50.07\00:02:51.09 And I think this would pertain 00:02:51.27\00:02:53.69 probably to quite a few of your viewers, 00:02:53.70\00:02:56.87 he said that he was on a plane and he had a philosophical 00:02:57.69\00:03:01.12 moment about me when they started 00:03:01.13\00:03:03.09 announcing about the oxygen mask, 00:03:03.10\00:03:05.00 that-- you know how they instruct you 00:03:05.39\00:03:08.06 to put the oxygen mask on somebody 00:03:08.39\00:03:10.42 else--not to put it on somebody else first, 00:03:10.43\00:03:12.87 to put it on yourself in case of emergency. 00:03:13.36\00:03:15.57 Because if you're helping someone else 00:03:16.00\00:03:18.27 instead, everyone could perish. 00:03:18.42\00:03:21.33 Take care of yourself first, 00:03:21.78\00:03:23.51 and then you can help those around you much better. 00:03:23.81\00:03:26.75 And I feel that's what... 00:03:28.00\00:03:29.81 I've gained here, during my stay at Weimar. 00:03:30.36\00:03:34.09 So how is this program 00:03:34.54\00:03:37.12 going to help you administer to 00:03:37.66\00:03:40.42 other folks' well being? 00:03:41.12\00:03:43.27 Well the fact that, 00:03:44.66\00:03:47.12 my... well being 00:03:47.57\00:03:51.27 is improving, just increases my capacity 00:03:51.69\00:03:55.66 to help not only myself but to help others as well. 00:03:56.21\00:03:59.81 To help my family, and 00:03:59.82\00:04:01.72 be able to help others outside as well. 00:04:02.06\00:04:04.36 And what have you learned here in the last 17 days-- 00:04:04.81\00:04:07.84 and I know this is an 18 day program-- 00:04:08.06\00:04:10.24 But what have you learned that you can take home, 00:04:10.81\00:04:13.15 take to your community, 00:04:13.16\00:04:14.21 take back to your church, that might 00:04:14.48\00:04:16.42 lift someone up? 00:04:17.24\00:04:18.51 I've come to believe, 00:04:20.15\00:04:22.48 deeply in the validity of this 00:04:23.12\00:04:25.72 the nutritional approach. 00:04:26.27\00:04:28.42 I was a bit skeptical, 00:04:30.21\00:04:32.57 and as my grandmother used to say, 00:04:33.09\00:04:35.48 Laura, you're a poor eater! 00:04:35.49\00:04:37.36 And I have been all my life, 00:04:37.75\00:04:40.51 but after going through the instruction about 00:04:41.03\00:04:44.39 what it is that we've really been consuming, 00:04:45.15\00:04:47.54 the ingredients and what has 00:04:48.09\00:04:49.78 happened to food over the years, and so forth. 00:04:49.79\00:04:52.63 And the value 00:04:53.18\00:04:55.18 of eating food the way God created it, 00:04:55.48\00:04:59.60 and originally intended us to consume it. 00:04:59.81\00:05:02.18 It's reflected in the improvement in 00:05:02.63\00:05:06.54 the readings in my lab work, 00:05:06.72\00:05:09.03 it's improved the way that I feel since I've arrived, 00:05:09.48\00:05:14.03 and it has, 00:05:14.63\00:05:16.06 really opened me up to hear more 00:05:16.51\00:05:19.63 from God what it is that he's saying to me. 00:05:20.18\00:05:23.18 Wonderful. 00:05:23.63\00:05:24.63 So then you realize that your body 00:05:25.06\00:05:26.63 is the temple of the Holy Spirit. 00:05:26.64\00:05:28.24 Absolutely. 00:05:28.25\00:05:29.33 God said not to defile these bodies. 00:05:29.34\00:05:31.42 So we got to take care of these temples. 00:05:32.00\00:05:33.45 Right. Right. 00:05:33.60\00:05:35.18 How's your energy? How--has that changed? 00:05:35.30\00:05:38.06 Ah, to be honest that hasn't changed much 00:05:38.60\00:05:41.45 much yet, ah--that's--but 00:05:41.78\00:05:44.21 I'm confident that over time it will, that was 00:05:44.63\00:05:47.60 quite a high bar to set for an 18 day 00:05:47.87\00:05:51.42 time span. But with the 00:05:51.66\00:05:53.36 improvement that I have seen so far, 00:05:53.37\00:05:55.78 it has made me committed 00:05:56.30\00:05:59.15 to continue with this lifestyle, with that is one 00:05:59.42\00:06:02.57 one of the objectives that my energy will increase. 00:06:02.58\00:06:05.75 Do you feel-- when you arrived here were you aware 00:06:06.24\00:06:10.57 or were you depressed in any way? 00:06:11.12\00:06:13.87 I was... 00:06:14.81\00:06:16.30 I think you'd call it like world weary, 00:06:16.78\00:06:18.87 from having--just having had 00:06:19.60\00:06:22.78 encountered so many... 00:06:23.33\00:06:25.45 major life changes and stresses 00:06:26.27\00:06:29.33 over the past several--actually 00:06:29.57\00:06:31.69 ten years my husband was really sick. 00:06:31.70\00:06:34.21 So... 00:06:34.69\00:06:36.45 Yeah I was not at the top of my game by any stretch. 00:06:37.24\00:06:41.81 And you feel like you got a grip on it? You're ready to... 00:06:42.39\00:06:47.30 Much more so-- much more so than I was. I feel like I 00:06:48.06\00:06:52.66 am connecting better 00:06:53.24\00:06:55.57 with God in order to discern what it is that 00:06:55.84\00:06:58.69 He does have in mind for me, direction-wise. 00:06:58.70\00:07:01.51 When you get home, 00:07:02.00\00:07:03.30 what is it that you'll describe 00:07:04.00\00:07:06.21 as far as Weimar's NEWSTART program, 00:07:07.15\00:07:09.72 what will you say to your family and friends? 00:07:10.39\00:07:12.54 What did you do when you were here? 00:07:12.55\00:07:14.24 Well I would say 00:07:15.30\00:07:17.42 first of all that it's not whacky, 00:07:17.69\00:07:20.09 it's-- that the... 00:07:20.54\00:07:22.75 food is good, 00:07:23.45\00:07:25.21 far better than I had expected. 00:07:25.66\00:07:28.21 That with the instruction that I've 00:07:28.66\00:07:32.03 obtained while I was here 00:07:32.66\00:07:34.21 that I can see that it's 00:07:34.54\00:07:35.69 really something that's very doable, 00:07:35.70\00:07:37.42 when I do return home. 00:07:38.00\00:07:39.54 And most importantly, are 00:07:40.18\00:07:42.78 the very clear benefits 00:07:43.57\00:07:45.21 that the participants achieve 00:07:45.36\00:07:48.84 from having participated in it. 00:07:49.12\00:07:50.72 How about your walking? The exercise part of the program 00:07:52.66\00:07:56.42 Someone-- some people don't like that 00:07:56.87\00:07:59.63 E word, but we'll call it activity. 00:08:00.18\00:08:03.75 Do you plan on sharing that with the folks back home? 00:08:04.15\00:08:08.06 Sure, it used to be that the exercise 00:08:08.48\00:08:10.81 that I got was getting in and out of my car! 00:08:10.82\00:08:13.60 And... 00:08:14.09\00:08:15.39 I've been doing a lot more walking here, there are 00:08:15.60\00:08:18.24 some limitations just because of my MS, but 00:08:18.48\00:08:21.75 it has-- I've... 00:08:22.30\00:08:23.66 there's been a big change 00:08:23.84\00:08:25.39 in terms of my capacity and my enjoyment of it as well. 00:08:25.48\00:08:29.33 You mention food, and I know the viewers, some of which have 00:08:30.36\00:08:33.24 called me in the past and go 00:08:33.48\00:08:35.12 Well I don't know if I can live on salads. 00:08:35.36\00:08:37.72 Did you eat salads? 00:11:29.54\00:11:30.78 Well you know I think one of the things Ron, 00:11:31.30\00:11:33.24 that is really exciting about Laura's situation, 00:11:33.36\00:11:36.48 you know sometimes we feature people on this show who 00:11:37.03\00:11:40.72 you know, threw away their canes and wheelchairs, 00:11:41.03\00:11:43.69 were blind and now they can see. 00:11:43.70\00:11:45.69 And of course I'm exaggerating! 00:11:45.81\00:11:47.69 And a lot of people can get the mistaken idea 00:11:47.81\00:11:50.54 that when they make lifestyle changes, 00:11:50.87\00:11:53.30 in two weeks everything is normal! 00:11:53.31\00:11:55.33 Laura was sharing with you her enthusiasm, she's seen enough 00:11:56.36\00:11:59.51 progress that I mean her life is going to be different. 00:11:59.63\00:12:02.60 But at the same time you know, you asked her 00:12:03.00\00:12:04.60 about her energy level, she said, You know that really 00:12:04.61\00:12:06.63 hasn't improved dramatically yet. 00:12:06.81\00:12:08.54 And so I think this is-- it's really 00:12:09.18\00:12:11.24 important to have a credible show like this 00:12:11.25\00:12:13.57 when we highlight lifestyle 00:12:13.81\00:12:15.57 everyone just doesn't fit into some cookbook, 00:12:15.87\00:12:19.33 and just go through some trajectory 00:12:19.57\00:12:21.42 where in two weeks they're, you know, 00:12:21.43\00:12:23.30 a totally a new person, and they 00:12:23.31\00:12:25.00 never have any medical problems again! 00:12:25.01\00:12:26.81 I'm so glad to hear you say this because often times, 00:12:27.03\00:12:29.78 sitting here I'm looking for 00:12:30.21\00:12:32.09 some miraculous things to happen! 00:12:32.10\00:12:34.18 And once in a while, 00:12:34.51\00:12:35.63 there isn't anything so 00:12:35.81\00:12:37.30 miraculous but change is happened. 00:12:37.31\00:12:39.33 And I'm glad you put that out, because people 00:12:39.72\00:12:42.24 are wondering, while she didn't go 00:12:42.42\00:12:44.18 through too many changes-- or he-- 00:12:44.19\00:12:45.81 But go on Doctor. 00:12:46.09\00:12:47.12 Yeah, but so what's miraculous really 00:12:47.13\00:12:49.09 is that even-- you know when you 00:12:49.42\00:12:51.30 stand and you look back and you say well, 00:12:51.31\00:12:53.57 you know, 00:12:53.58\00:12:54.57 the Lord didn't give us some amazing testimony about how 00:12:54.75\00:12:59.12 you know, the MS is totally behind her, 00:12:59.42\00:13:01.54 you know, she has no concerns about it. 00:13:01.55\00:13:03.54 But here's the point... 00:13:04.09\00:13:05.33 The key to MS success-- I mean 00:13:05.63\00:13:07.54 one of the great researchers in this 00:13:07.55\00:13:09.72 area-- fairly controversial guy, 00:13:09.73\00:13:11.72 but by the name of Dr. Swank in Oregon, 00:13:11.73\00:13:14.12 did a lot of work with MS over the years. 00:13:14.45\00:13:17.57 And really for many physicians, 00:13:17.84\00:13:20.12 nail down a connection between lifestyle, 00:13:20.33\00:13:23.03 and long term improvement, long term success 00:13:23.04\00:13:25.75 with MS. 00:13:25.76\00:13:27.03 But it's not something that necessarily happens over night. 00:13:27.24\00:13:30.63 But it's helping a person see 00:13:30.84\00:13:33.03 that small changes, 00:13:33.30\00:13:35.00 can make enough return on their investment, 00:13:35.27\00:13:37.84 as far as the lifestyle change investment 00:13:37.85\00:13:40.36 that it's worth sticking with. 00:13:40.51\00:13:41.81 And so Laura made that change, and you saw it, you know 00:13:42.24\00:13:44.87 the diet was good, it was healthy, 00:13:45.12\00:13:47.39 she felt good about it, 00:13:47.40\00:13:48.87 and she sees that it's helping her, 00:13:49.18\00:13:50.84 she sees progress 00:13:50.85\00:13:51.84 and she's going to make changes that are 00:13:51.85\00:13:53.72 going to be with her for the rest of her life. 00:13:53.73\00:13:55.78 She seemed to be very level 00:13:56.54\00:13:57.81 headed about that, and I've got-- 00:13:57.82\00:13:59.39 I got that communication loud and clear that 00:13:59.84\00:14:02.15 it's significant enough, 00:14:02.39\00:14:04.24 that she's on board with it. 00:14:04.69\00:14:06.36 And I-- you know, I had this discussion with Laura, 00:14:06.81\00:14:09.33 I've had it with many patients, 00:14:09.34\00:14:10.75 who is the person that benefits the most 00:14:11.42\00:14:13.39 from an intensive lifestyle change program? 00:14:13.40\00:14:15.45 Is it the person who has the most miraculous, 00:14:15.72\00:14:18.00 the most dramatic changes? 00:14:18.01\00:14:19.24 Or is it a person who makes 00:14:19.63\00:14:21.30 slower changes? 00:14:21.54\00:14:22.78 And I think you can put an argument either way, 00:14:23.36\00:14:25.57 and let me tell you how it works Ron. 00:14:25.78\00:14:27.42 The person sometimes that comes here for two weeks 00:14:27.87\00:14:31.00 and their triglycerides go 00:14:31.33\00:14:33.03 from some sky high figure to normal 00:14:33.04\00:14:35.15 their diabetes is gone, 00:14:35.42\00:14:37.00 they're off all their medications. 00:14:37.01\00:14:39.15 The danger that that person faces 00:14:39.36\00:14:41.60 is that they're going to say, you know what? 00:14:41.72\00:14:43.39 that was no big deal! 00:14:43.72\00:14:45.06 If I get off this program hey I can 00:14:45.24\00:14:47.21 always come back to Weimar and in two weeks 00:14:47.22\00:14:49.51 I can turn back the clock. 00:14:49.72\00:14:51.24 You know I never thought of that, 00:14:51.39\00:14:53.15 but it's so true. 00:14:53.16\00:14:54.13 It rings true to my head anyway, 00:14:54.42\00:14:56.39 that, that could be the case. 00:14:56.63\00:14:58.45 And I'm glad you brought this up, 00:14:58.69\00:15:00.36 it's never been discussed. 00:15:00.37\00:15:01.54 Can you elaborate a little further? 00:15:01.81\00:15:03.00 Well I'll give you a practical example. 00:15:03.12\00:15:04.42 I've worked in a number of lifestyle 00:15:04.57\00:15:06.33 centers over the years and one of them 00:15:06.34\00:15:08.12 one of the most disappointed patients I ever saw, 00:15:08.30\00:15:11.39 was someone who came to lower his triglycerides. 00:15:11.57\00:15:13.84 He actually came through a two week 00:15:14.39\00:15:16.15 program very much like we run here at Weimar, 00:15:16.16\00:15:18.27 and at the end of the week his triglycerides were worse! 00:15:18.66\00:15:21.39 I mean he was livid. - Wow! 00:15:21.84\00:15:23.51 He actually wasn't my patient, he was one of my colleague's, 00:15:23.66\00:15:26.15 but it would have happened to me if I were his doctor too! 00:15:26.16\00:15:28.48 - Well I don't think so! 00:15:28.49\00:15:29.78 No it's the way your body responded Ron! 00:15:29.79\00:15:31.51 - I know! But here's the amazing thing-- 00:15:31.63\00:15:33.66 what happened was 00:15:33.81\00:15:35.33 his doctor encouraged him that he 00:15:35.48\00:15:38.60 all the more needed to stick with it, 00:15:38.87\00:15:40.84 because he was not one of these people that responded so quickly 00:15:40.85\00:15:44.24 and he did it! 00:15:44.60\00:15:45.60 And this guy came back, 00:15:45.61\00:15:46.60 I think it was six months or a year later 00:15:46.61\00:15:48.36 his triglycerides were great. 00:15:48.54\00:15:50.21 He had stuck with the lifestyle because he 00:15:50.45\00:15:52.45 realized that this was going to be a long term commitment 00:15:52.46\00:15:55.15 it wasn't just something that went away overnight for him. 00:15:55.27\00:15:57.84 You know that's so inspiring because I 00:15:58.57\00:16:00.45 know people call me from time to time, 00:16:00.46\00:16:02.30 they say, Are you telling me if I come to your NEWSTART program, 00:16:02.69\00:16:06.39 I'm going to lose 70 pounds, lose this, this, this, this? 00:16:06.66\00:16:10.45 I go wait a minute! Time out! No not really. 00:16:10.66\00:16:13.18 So--but I like what you're saying because 00:16:13.45\00:16:16.15 when I came to the program in 05 00:16:16.39\00:16:18.72 it wasn't... 00:16:19.27\00:16:20.24 something I was going to try, 00:16:20.48\00:16:22.24 it wasn't something I was going to, 00:16:22.51\00:16:24.48 Well let's test the waters 00:16:24.49\00:16:25.84 I was committed, and I knew 00:16:26.18\00:16:27.84 I knew that if I stuck to it 00:16:28.39\00:16:30.36 I would go through these changes. 00:16:30.72\00:16:32.30 And that's what you're describing, 00:16:32.31\00:16:33.75 and it's so comforting to hear you say this. 00:16:34.24\00:16:37.54 Well you know, the other thing about the program here, 00:16:38.06\00:16:40.69 and we talk about this a lot, 00:16:40.70\00:16:42.15 is that it's a spiritual program. 00:16:42.45\00:16:44.18 The Lord is at the center of this program, 00:16:44.30\00:16:46.36 people are praying 00:16:47.06\00:16:48.36 around the clock if you will, 00:16:48.54\00:16:50.15 for these guests that come through our program. 00:16:50.33\00:16:52.54 And I think the Lord in His wisdom 00:16:52.75\00:16:54.63 often knows what a person needs to see. 00:16:54.64\00:16:56.72 If there's a person 00:16:57.18\00:16:58.42 who--they really need to see some dramatic change. 00:16:58.57\00:17:01.18 I think of a fellow once 00:17:01.19\00:17:02.36 who came with a different attitude than you, 00:17:02.75\00:17:04.72 he said I'm just going to try it out. 00:17:04.73\00:17:06.36 And at the end of two weeks, 00:17:07.12\00:17:08.87 he said, You know if two weeks 00:17:09.30\00:17:11.39 made this big a difference for me, 00:17:11.40\00:17:13.66 I'd be a fool not to keep living 00:17:13.67\00:17:15.84 this way for the rest of my life. 00:17:15.85\00:17:18.09 So the Lord knew he needed that kind of experience. 00:17:18.45\00:17:21.24 You know, and I don't know that when I got here I 00:17:21.69\00:17:23.78 really had that kind of an attitude, in retrospect. 00:17:23.79\00:17:26.06 I'm not even sure, but 00:17:26.42\00:17:27.69 I know I stuck to it, 00:17:28.09\00:17:29.51 it's been almost 5 years this August. 00:17:29.52\00:17:32.00 - Wow, tremendous. 00:17:32.01\00:17:32.98 So I'd just-- I'd like to 00:17:32.99\00:17:34.24 encourage people who are watching us now 00:17:34.25\00:17:36.45 to know that there's hope, 00:17:36.66\00:17:38.48 that's what I want to instill on people here 00:17:39.30\00:17:42.21 on our program Doctor, that there is hope. 00:17:42.48\00:17:45.27 I mean it's a powerful message, regardless of 00:17:45.48\00:17:47.84 what you're dealing with, there is hope, and 00:17:47.85\00:17:50.21 it doesn't always happen in your time frame. 00:17:50.42\00:17:52.72 The Lord's timing is perfect, when you come here at 00:17:53.00\00:17:55.27 Weimar and give us the privilege of working with you, 00:17:55.28\00:17:57.60 or whether you make changes on your own at home, 00:17:57.84\00:18:00.36 lifestyle change is powerful, 00:18:00.54\00:18:02.48 especially Ron, when God adds his blessing to it. 00:18:02.66\00:18:06.12 Oh, Amen. 00:18:06.51\00:18:07.57 I notice you on... you were at Sacramento Central doing some 00:18:08.69\00:18:14.54 tell us about that just briefly? 00:18:15.30\00:18:16.69 Sure, sure, one of the exciting things about Weimar, 00:18:17.00\00:18:19.72 is this connection we have with Amazing Facts 00:18:19.73\00:18:22.18 and Doug Bachelor's church Sacramento 00:18:22.63\00:18:24.54 Central Seventh Day Adventist Church. 00:18:24.55\00:18:26.42 And there's just a powerful synergy with the 00:18:26.72\00:18:29.27 Amazing Facts Center of Evangelism, 00:18:29.45\00:18:31.42 we're working together, 00:18:31.57\00:18:32.63 We're out there doing health presentations, I'm 00:18:32.87\00:18:36.45 working with Doug occasionally doing some co-presenting, 00:18:36.69\00:18:39.48 and it's just exciting when 00:18:39.75\00:18:41.39 you bring the power of the gospel 00:18:41.40\00:18:43.30 and the power of God's healing message, 00:18:43.57\00:18:45.72 it's really a Biblical message, and just to 00:18:46.06\00:18:48.42 see how people's lives are changing. Some people 00:18:48.43\00:18:51.06 they change based on a health lecture or presentation, 00:18:51.21\00:18:53.84 other people need that hands on 00:18:54.24\00:18:55.63 approach like we offer here at Weimar. 00:18:55.64\00:18:57.36 Doctor, do you often go to churches 00:18:57.78\00:19:00.63 around the country to give 00:19:01.18\00:19:03.03 a lecture on health and nutrition and such? 00:19:03.51\00:19:06.09 Well I can speak for us collectively 00:19:06.33\00:19:08.09 here at Weimar, there are many of us 00:19:08.10\00:19:09.72 that travel to churches and do programs. 00:19:09.87\00:19:12.15 Unfortunately, even thought we have a fairly broad staff 00:19:12.45\00:19:15.54 we have more requests than we can fill. 00:19:15.84\00:19:17.63 But we're always happy to pray about 00:19:18.00\00:19:19.81 particular needs that a church or a 00:19:19.82\00:19:21.63 community group may have. 00:19:21.78\00:19:23.24 And if the Lord wants that to happen, 00:19:23.51\00:19:25.45 He brings it together in his time. 00:19:25.69\00:19:27.36 I'm not sure you're aware, but Dr. Chen 00:19:27.81\00:19:31.18 Pastor Brackett, myself 00:19:31.45\00:19:33.18 went to Enterprise Oregon 00:19:33.63\00:19:36.75 this past weekend, and did a reversing diabetes 00:19:37.09\00:19:40.21 program there. 00:19:40.63\00:19:42.78 Also obesity, etc. 00:19:43.33\00:19:46.09 But the Lord blessed. 00:19:46.24\00:19:48.18 We had a wonderful time, a good turnout. 00:19:48.27\00:19:51.12 And you know we just want to extend that offer to 00:19:51.57\00:19:54.51 church families around the country, 00:19:55.06\00:19:56.57 and it doesn't matter what church. 00:19:56.58\00:19:58.12 We had a gentleman on the 00:19:58.48\00:19:59.66 program before you 00:20:00.21\00:20:02.18 that is going-- who is a Baptist 00:20:02.51\00:20:04.63 and is going to go back to his southern California churches, 00:20:05.03\00:20:08.57 and perhaps we can bring 00:20:08.78\00:20:10.18 a crew down there and help them out too. 00:20:10.63\00:20:12.48 Tremendous. 00:20:12.51\00:20:13.51 So Doctor, what is the prognosis for Laura? 00:20:13.63\00:20:17.81 Well Laura's prognosis is extremely bright 00:20:18.36\00:20:21.60 because she's putting her hands in the Lord 00:20:21.66\00:20:23.72 and really her life is in the Lord's hands. 00:20:24.15\00:20:26.42 Her hands in the Lords hands, she's in His'. 00:20:26.51\00:20:29.30 And really that's where we want to be. 00:20:29.39\00:20:31.33 We know that the Lord's plan is 00:20:31.39\00:20:33.00 ultimately total healing for everyone of us, 00:20:33.01\00:20:35.15 whether it happens in this life, 00:20:35.48\00:20:37.15 or... 00:20:37.60\00:20:38.69 when we're with Him for eternity, 00:20:39.06\00:20:40.72 is the question. 00:20:40.73\00:20:41.81 But when we're trusting him, 00:20:41.87\00:20:43.39 He often gives us dramatic results 00:20:43.57\00:20:45.45 in the here and now, as well as in the future. 00:20:45.60\00:20:47.72 I'm so glad to hear you say that. 00:20:48.27\00:20:50.12 Any last comments to our viewers? 00:20:50.57\00:20:53.18 We have a few seconds left. 00:20:53.36\00:20:54.48 You know, one thing I'd just like to encourage you, 00:20:54.54\00:20:56.84 if the Lord is speaking to your heart about making changes, 00:20:56.85\00:20:59.54 about pressing closer to Him, 00:20:59.55\00:21:00.81 and following the principles of health in the Bible 00:21:01.12\00:21:03.27 go forward, you're never going to regret it, 00:21:03.48\00:21:05.75 and the Lord will definitely work with you. 00:21:05.87\00:21:08.18 Dr. DeRose, thank you for joining us. 00:21:08.42\00:21:10.36 We've run out of time, 00:21:10.81\00:21:11.87 Don't go away, we've got an 00:21:12.18\00:21:13.33 important message for you right after this. 00:21:13.34\00:21:15.15 Welcome to NEWSTART AT HOME. 00:21:29.81\00:21:31.57 I'm Dr. David DeRose, your host, 00:21:31.81\00:21:33.78 and with me today, Jerry Florres 00:21:34.03\00:21:35.87 therapist with the NEWSTART Medical Clinic 00:21:36.21\00:21:39.03 here at Weimar Center of Health and Education. 00:21:39.27\00:21:41.84 Jerry, it's great to have you with us again today. 00:21:42.18\00:21:44.24 It's great to be here. 00:21:44.25\00:21:45.30 Jerry you are just doing exciting 00:21:45.31\00:21:46.81 things I know in the NEWSTART program 00:21:46.82\00:21:48.57 because I've got patients and they're telling me 00:21:48.75\00:21:50.84 the tremendous things that are happening to them 00:21:51.09\00:21:53.27 through you, God's blessing working through 00:21:53.42\00:21:55.45 you and the other members of the team there. 00:21:55.46\00:21:57.48 Ah, low back pain 00:21:58.00\00:21:59.81 is something that a lot of my patients have 00:22:00.12\00:22:02.60 and you guys there are doing something that's helping it. 00:22:02.87\00:22:05.51 Can you bring us up to speed? Give us some take home pointers? 00:22:05.52\00:22:08.33 Yes, I can. What I'm going to demonstrate right now 00:22:08.75\00:22:11.69 is what I do here at NEWSTART with our guests, 00:22:12.03\00:22:14.60 and it's very simple. Most people 00:22:15.12\00:22:17.36 have bad postural habits, 00:22:17.57\00:22:19.21 they don't exercise enough, 00:22:19.42\00:22:21.24 and even people that walk a lot, they don't stretch. 00:22:21.69\00:22:25.03 So therefore what happens to our body is it tightens up. 00:22:25.48\00:22:28.51 And what happens when you get low back pain, 00:22:29.06\00:22:31.45 one of the things I notice most is 00:22:31.46\00:22:33.33 the psoas muscle, which is what 00:22:34.03\00:22:35.87 I'm going to demonstrate right now. 00:22:35.88\00:22:38.15 It is a muscle that is connected, 00:22:38.66\00:22:40.72 in case you didn't know, your legs 00:22:41.15\00:22:42.69 start right below your twelfth rib, 00:22:42.70\00:22:44.30 right around here. 00:22:44.63\00:22:45.66 And it comes and it hooks onto 00:22:46.18\00:22:48.75 joint of your leg, and it helps 00:22:49.03\00:22:50.75 your leg with moving it like this. 00:22:50.76\00:22:52.66 But when you sit down, they shorten 00:22:53.66\00:22:56.15 and tighten. 00:22:56.42\00:22:57.54 Then they take your pelvis 00:22:57.55\00:22:59.39 out of balance as they shorten, 00:22:59.66\00:23:01.39 and it takes the pelvis out of balance. 00:23:01.57\00:23:03.27 And what happens then 00:23:03.39\00:23:05.12 is ischemic tissue starts to develop, 00:23:05.33\00:23:07.69 and you all of a sudden get this pain that you can't bear. 00:23:08.09\00:23:12.00 You go to the doctor, and most 00:23:12.21\00:23:13.75 people don't know what to do with it. 00:23:13.76\00:23:15.69 So it's the process of the muscles tightening, 00:23:16.18\00:23:18.51 not being flexible enough that 00:23:18.52\00:23:20.12 often sets the stage for low back pain? 00:23:20.13\00:23:22.09 Yes, and what we do-- the key 00:23:22.27\00:23:24.54 to unlock these muscle spasms that 00:23:25.12\00:23:27.84 are happening in the lower back, is to 00:23:27.85\00:23:31.00 add heat, usually we do it through an epsom salt bath. 00:23:31.24\00:23:35.30 Ok. How do you make an epsom salt bath? 00:23:35.75\00:23:38.00 You take two cups of epsom salt, 00:23:38.09\00:23:40.15 which is available at most grocery stores or pharmacies, 00:23:40.16\00:23:43.60 and you take two cups into water that's about 100 to 104 degrees. 00:23:43.84\00:23:48.06 And you pour it in there and you just lie there and relax 00:23:48.72\00:23:52.36 for about 12-- up to 30 minutes. 00:23:52.81\00:23:55.36 Then what we do here 00:23:56.18\00:23:58.21 is we include the massage, 00:23:58.42\00:24:00.51 which gets all the 00:24:00.75\00:24:02.21 muscles nice and lengthened. 00:24:02.66\00:24:04.51 We get the 00:24:04.87\00:24:06.12 the circulation optimally going, flowing to the muscle, 00:24:06.57\00:24:09.72 and once that happens 00:24:10.27\00:24:11.51 you got this nice lengthened muscle, 00:24:11.87\00:24:13.69 all the range of motion, in most cases. 00:24:14.00\00:24:16.54 In some, it takes several therapies 00:24:16.78\00:24:19.15 And then the lower back pain dissipates once the pelvis 00:24:19.42\00:24:22.78 and all the rest of the muscles are nice and balanced. 00:24:23.21\00:24:25.42 So is it true Jerry 00:24:26.09\00:24:27.75 that a lot of the problems people have with their low 00:24:28.00\00:24:30.72 backs is because of 00:24:30.73\00:24:31.75 incorrect postures and movements? 00:24:31.76\00:24:33.51 As a matter of fact yes. As a matter of fact 00:24:34.57\00:24:36.63 most people go multiple times to the doctor, 00:24:36.64\00:24:38.63 and up to 95 percent of the time, even in MRIs 00:24:39.15\00:24:43.09 and in other studies, like CAT Scans, 00:24:43.33\00:24:45.84 they can't find anything. 00:24:45.85\00:24:47.57 Therefore we find out that it's 00:24:48.03\00:24:50.30 muscles in spasm that is causing that 00:24:50.31\00:24:53.00 terrible low back pain. 00:24:53.30\00:24:54.60 Ok, so try to keep more flexible, 00:24:54.87\00:24:56.51 drink more water, that's going to make a difference too? 00:24:56.52\00:24:59.15 Water again is the key. 00:24:59.33\00:25:01.15 You got to stay hydrated 00:25:01.30\00:25:02.72 because if the muscles don't have enough water, 00:25:03.00\00:25:06.00 that means that they don't have enough oxygen, that means that 00:25:06.45\00:25:09.81 it sends a signal to your brain to tighten up. 00:25:10.27\00:25:13.09 Ok, so you provide them with that. 00:25:13.69\00:25:15.45 And not to mention that 00:25:16.00\00:25:17.63 sitting a lot in the position we are in 00:25:17.75\00:25:20.66 shortens those muscles 00:25:20.87\00:25:22.30 therefore again taking the pelvis out of balance 00:25:22.57\00:25:26.75 therefore creating that tissue 00:25:27.18\00:25:29.27 that doesn't have that 00:25:29.48\00:25:31.45 optimum blood flow, therefore pain. 00:25:31.46\00:25:34.48 Is there a real quick stretch you could demonstrate for us? 00:25:34.81\00:25:37.36 We're almost out of time, but is there 00:25:37.37\00:25:39.00 some pointer that is often missed in low back problems? 00:25:39.36\00:25:42.63 I show people, I do this while they are lying down 00:25:42.78\00:25:46.48 and then I also teach them how to do it and it's very simple. 00:25:46.69\00:25:50.39 Most people use this stretch to stretch out their quadriceps 00:25:50.69\00:25:53.66 but what I do is I take it here 00:25:54.12\00:25:55.81 and I add a movement. 00:25:56.06\00:25:57.06 Remember I showed you that muscle that goes from 00:25:57.30\00:25:59.54 the bottom of your rib, 00:25:59.66\00:26:00.78 attached to your spine, your T 12, 00:26:01.48\00:26:03.69 and you bring it down and you just go like this. 00:26:03.87\00:26:07.06 And you repeat this about... 00:26:07.72\00:26:09.39 30 seconds, and you do about 3-4 sets, 00:26:10.03\00:26:13.36 and you do both sides of the body. 00:26:13.66\00:26:15.39 therefore your muscles relax, 00:26:15.57\00:26:17.87 pain is dissipated. 00:26:18.42\00:26:20.48 A lot of simple things you can do at home 00:26:20.63\00:26:22.69 to prevent or treat low back problems. 00:26:22.81\00:26:25.21 If you've got questions get a doctor's evaluation first. 00:26:25.42\00:26:28.09 If you want more information, simply go to: 00:26:28.30\00:26:30.60 Modern views of evolution stem all the way back 00:26:40.27\00:26:42.78 to theories developed in the mid-1800s. 00:26:42.81\00:26:45.30 Out of the same time period came ideas that shape 00:26:45.87\00:26:49.27 our educational system today. 00:26:49.30\00:26:51.45 The Common School Movement, for example, 00:26:52.09\00:26:54.36 saw schools more like a factory, 00:26:54.72\00:26:56.63 with students blindly memorizing instruction 00:26:56.64\00:26:59.39 rather than thinking for themselves. 00:26:59.42\00:27:01.39 Their curriculum was rigid and theoretical. 00:27:01.84\00:27:04.39 Instead of being flexible and practical, 00:27:04.40\00:27:07.24 it was designed to conform the individual 00:27:07.39\00:27:09.78 into a specific ideological mold 00:27:09.87\00:27:12.42 that fit the needs of an old industrial era 00:27:12.66\00:27:15.21 long since passed. 00:27:15.22\00:27:16.60 Just like our view of creation in six literal days, 00:27:17.87\00:27:21.21 we believe the Bible contains an educational blueprint 00:27:21.30\00:27:25.30 radically different from the one we see now. 00:27:25.57\00:27:28.03 Well friends that's it for today. 00:27:41.27\00:27:43.27 We all know someone who could use our NEWSTART program, 00:27:43.72\00:27:47.24 maybe you have a family member or a church member or a friend, 00:27:47.72\00:27:50.63 that needs to lose some weight, 00:27:51.18\00:27:52.69 or maybe they're dealing with diabetes. 00:27:52.70\00:27:54.60 Pick up that phone and give us a call, 00:27:55.21\00:27:57.06 at: 00:27:57.27\00:27:58.45
