We have that, and so 00:13:44.03\00:13:46.57 I asked him, because I saw his face too, 00:13:46.72\00:13:49.42 and he has the redness and the itching, 00:13:49.63\00:13:52.21 and that's some of the problems with that. 00:13:52.24\00:13:54.27 Is there a way to diagnose through blood draws, etc, 00:13:54.54\00:13:59.69 anything that has to do with this condition? 00:14:00.03\00:14:03.81 Well you know, I've heard this in the past, 00:14:04.12\00:14:06.00 and I see that it's true. 00:14:06.06\00:14:07.54 In medicine, whenever we have anything where there's 00:14:07.63\00:14:11.21 a lot of different ways to do it, 00:14:11.24\00:14:13.63 it's one of two things. 00:14:13.87\00:14:16.09 And it's either that all of them are pretty good, 00:14:16.57\00:14:19.27 or that none of them are very helpful. 00:14:19.54\00:14:21.45 [laughter] 00:14:21.60\00:14:23.03 And unfortunately, that's the problem with allergies. 00:14:23.09\00:14:26.60 They do the skin scratch test 00:14:26.75\00:14:30.21 and she's had some where she said 00:14:30.24\00:14:31.81 it just left a fiery mark on her. 00:14:31.82\00:14:34.66 And they have the blood test. 00:14:35.00\00:14:37.81 The trouble is, is the body's always changing, 00:14:38.12\00:14:41.24 and frequently the foods that you like to eat, 00:14:41.48\00:14:44.33 if you eat them over and over and over again, 00:14:44.48\00:14:47.12 your body tends to 00:14:47.39\00:14:50.75 start to react to those that you keep eating so much of. 00:14:51.00\00:14:55.51 And sometimes those are the foods that you like, 00:14:55.66\00:14:57.63 so that's why you go back to them. 00:14:57.64\00:14:59.30 Bless her heart, the little girl, 00:14:59.57\00:15:01.18 she would raise her hand when I was giving a lecture 00:15:01.30\00:15:04.06 and I would see her over there, 00:15:04.15\00:15:05.60 and I'd watch, and pretty soon I'd say, "Yes, Lindsay? 00:15:05.61\00:15:08.51 What would you like to ask?" and she says, 00:15:08.63\00:15:12.45 "Is it alright if I eat chocolate?" 00:15:12.81\00:15:15.24 [laughter] 00:15:15.42\00:15:17.75 Well, of course it's alright if you eat chocolate! 00:15:18.09\00:15:20.00 Yeah, that's a plant food, of course, you know. 00:15:20.01\00:15:22.33 What could be wrong with that? 00:15:22.54\00:15:23.78 We grow cocoa, right? 00:15:23.84\00:15:25.66 How do you handle that? 00:15:25.81\00:15:28.21 Well, no, see, the thing is is that 00:15:28.45\00:15:30.72 the whole plant foods, and chocolate has 00:15:31.09\00:15:33.18 some things in it that's like... 00:15:33.19\00:15:34.63 Coffee has caffeine, and chocolate, 00:15:35.03\00:15:39.39 and tea, and all these things, they have substances that 00:15:39.57\00:15:41.69 kind of excite the body, 00:15:42.00\00:15:43.54 and we're trying to keep things calm. 00:15:43.55\00:15:45.84 One of the things that's been helpful for her 00:15:46.12\00:15:48.36 is some of the baths and the oils and so forth. 00:15:48.39\00:15:52.24 They've tried various things, 00:15:52.54\00:15:54.39 The body, as we know, is made up of the foods that we eat, 00:15:54.48\00:15:58.60 and really, the foods that we've eaten, 00:15:58.75\00:16:01.15 some of them will stay in our body for years. 00:16:01.21\00:16:03.69 And so the longer she does this, 00:16:04.09\00:16:06.27 the better she'll be. 00:16:06.39\00:16:07.81 Now she said, as you could see in our clip, 00:16:08.18\00:16:11.78 that she's noticed a change. 00:16:12.03\00:16:14.81 She's noticed it internally, and she's feeling different. 00:16:15.15\00:16:18.36 But you're saying that, 00:16:18.60\00:16:21.06 that being the case, it may take 00:16:21.36\00:16:23.60 months, perhaps years, before she's totally 00:16:23.78\00:16:27.09 being able to eat almost anything. 00:16:27.60\00:16:29.51 Yeah, and it's tough, you know, because... 00:16:29.57\00:16:31.24 I could see her light up the other day. 00:16:31.54\00:16:33.24 Her mom was able to bring 00:16:33.25\00:16:36.24 a couple of the animals and some of her friends. 00:16:36.36\00:16:40.45 And she was just out running around in the sunshine and just, 00:16:40.57\00:16:43.72 she just lit up, you know. 00:16:43.78\00:16:45.48 Well, you could expect that to happen. 00:16:45.49\00:16:47.27 But anyway, the thing is is that 00:16:47.42\00:16:49.18 I keep talking about the prostaglandins 00:16:49.48\00:16:51.78 and these things, and it's so important because 00:16:52.00\00:16:55.66 they do a couple of things. One of them 00:16:55.78\00:16:58.12 is that they dilate your tiny little blood vessels. 00:16:58.39\00:17:00.81 Of course that would make your face redder 00:17:01.03\00:17:03.24 or something like that. 00:17:03.25\00:17:04.27 But the part that I want us to think about 00:17:04.60\00:17:07.48 is that they also decrease inflammation. 00:17:07.69\00:17:10.36 - So that's really the point you want to reach. 00:17:10.60\00:17:13.72 - That's the point that we want to... 00:17:13.78\00:17:15.27 And those prostaglandins, as you told us over and over, 00:17:15.30\00:17:18.27 And I'm still getting it. I'm still...I hear that 00:17:18.48\00:17:21.06 in my head, you saying and talking about those. 00:17:21.27\00:17:24.06 And they're made up of the type of foods that we eat. 00:17:24.30\00:17:26.69 - Yes. And so, 00:17:26.78\00:17:28.21 what she noticed is that even though the redness is there, 00:17:28.57\00:17:31.84 is that the itching isn't as much. 00:17:32.09\00:17:34.12 Really? - Yeah. 00:17:34.75\00:17:36.36 And whenever you scratch, of course, 00:17:36.75\00:17:38.75 you've known that as well-- 00:17:38.76\00:17:40.21 And this is a really bad pollen time. 00:17:40.57\00:17:42.78 The other day when we were out on the walk, 00:17:42.79\00:17:46.00 my left eye was just a little bit irritated. 00:17:46.01\00:17:50.45 But I knew that if I started scratching it 00:17:50.60\00:17:53.18 that it would probably get all red 00:17:53.24\00:17:54.51 and I'd want to scratch it some more. 00:17:54.52\00:17:55.84 So that's been a real problem. 00:17:56.18\00:17:58.18 So the fact that with the different prostaglandins 00:17:58.48\00:18:01.75 that she's getting, and there's less itching... 00:18:01.78\00:18:03.81 What's really pleasing to her folks 00:18:04.24\00:18:08.12 is that she would just go like this, 00:18:08.30\00:18:11.42 and then the scratches, 00:18:11.78\00:18:15.30 they would get infected, 00:18:15.72\00:18:17.03 and then she'd have to go on antibiotics. 00:18:17.04\00:18:19.03 And what I was noticing is where, you know, 00:18:19.24\00:18:22.84 her clothes rub, and when she's walking-- 00:18:23.06\00:18:25.09 there, and around the belt and stuff like that. 00:18:25.33\00:18:27.87 That's an irritant, and that tends... 00:18:28.27\00:18:31.60 So the itching is a good thing, that that's decreased. 00:18:31.87\00:18:35.66 And they can see that a lot of these really bad sores 00:18:36.09\00:18:40.63 and stuff are starting to heal up. 00:18:40.72\00:18:42.27 And she already does have some scars, 00:18:42.54\00:18:44.36 but at her age, you know, those will fade as time goes by. 00:18:44.37\00:18:50.30 And the thing that will be a real challenge and will be tough 00:18:51.30\00:18:55.06 is for her to do this 00:18:55.30\00:18:57.42 when she's, you know, with her friends, 00:18:57.66\00:19:00.48 with the kids that are around. You know, they'll say, 00:19:00.78\00:19:02.75 "Oh come on, you can do this." 00:19:02.78\00:19:04.18 - "You can have this and have that," right. 00:19:04.21\00:19:06.00 But she is very conscientious, and so 00:19:06.33\00:19:08.45 with the itching down, without all the scratching, 00:19:08.69\00:19:12.39 and then as she continues to eat just the plant foods-- 00:19:12.60\00:19:16.75 and her folks are going to do this with her. 00:19:16.84\00:19:18.69 Her dad needs to. 00:19:18.81\00:19:20.45 We've seen that people through the 00:19:20.66\00:19:22.54 weeks and the months and the years 00:19:22.55\00:19:24.39 as they go by, that they can get better and better on this. 00:19:24.42\00:19:28.15 That's so wonderful to hear you say that, 00:19:28.69\00:19:31.21 and what a wonderful child. 00:19:31.48\00:19:33.24 I'm so inspired with her attitude. 00:19:33.39\00:19:36.24 She seems so much more mature, 00:19:36.42\00:19:39.27 and she really does, at nine years old, 00:19:39.42\00:19:42.00 she really understands what's going on here. 00:19:42.12\00:19:44.42 - Yes, she does, yeah. 00:19:44.51\00:19:45.54 And I think we have someone who's 00:19:45.60\00:19:47.15 going to stick to the program, don't you? 00:19:47.16\00:19:48.87 Yeah, it'll be tough. It'll be tough. 00:19:49.12\00:19:51.42 But she has a lot of support, and it's good. 00:19:51.54\00:19:55.12 And you know, coming back to this other again, 00:19:55.27\00:19:59.18 what we eat is so important, 00:19:59.21\00:20:01.24 because everything in our body changes. 00:20:01.25\00:20:03.66 From the cell membrane, 00:20:03.67\00:20:05.51 where the cells are elastic and pliable, 00:20:05.52\00:20:08.57 they're resistant to allergens, 00:20:10.72\00:20:12.33 and what goes inside the cells, the way they work. 00:20:12.69\00:20:16.66 And bless her heart, you know, 00:20:16.72\00:20:18.39 she's determined to do more and more exercise. 00:20:18.48\00:20:21.42 Yesterday she got up to where she was walking six miles. 00:20:21.63\00:20:25.66 And her father said... 00:20:26.12\00:20:27.18 - Six miles! Yeah, six miles. 00:20:27.51\00:20:29.33 I told her she only really needs to do 3 to 5. 00:20:29.45\00:20:32.24 But her father said, you know, 00:20:32.39\00:20:35.06 she's healthier, she's in better shape. 00:20:35.24\00:20:38.36 So he's happy about it, too. 00:20:38.39\00:20:39.78 And he's getting healthier as well. 00:20:40.27\00:20:42.48 So this program is helping him, as well, 00:20:42.57\00:20:45.66 even though he's here to assist her. 00:20:45.69\00:20:47.63 Yeah, and we need to pray for these people, 00:20:48.03\00:20:49.33 because you can imagine just constantly being itching, 00:20:49.36\00:20:52.15 and I've seem them just slapping, slapping their face 00:20:52.36\00:20:55.03 to try to get rid of it, and they can't, you know. 00:20:55.09\00:20:58.06 But the good news is that we've seen people 00:20:58.30\00:21:01.21 do better and better the longer they're on it. 00:21:01.30\00:21:04.09 That is great news, and Doctor, 00:21:04.54\00:21:06.54 you know, it's great having you here, 00:21:06.84\00:21:08.78 and I really appreciate you taking your time. 00:21:08.84\00:21:11.75 I know you doctors are busy from morning till beyond sunset, 00:21:12.00\00:21:16.66 and I want to thank you for taking your time. 00:21:16.81\00:21:19.12 Well, we need to encourage everybody that we can. 00:21:19.42\00:21:21.48 - Yes we do, and thank you. We have an important message for you 00:21:26.03\00:21:28.54 right after this. 00:21:28.57\00:21:29.84 Welcome to NEWSTART at Home. 00:21:44.18\00:21:45.72 I'm your host, Dr. David DeRose. 00:21:45.75\00:21:47.75 With me today, Hildelisa Flickenger, 00:21:48.06\00:21:51.42 registered dietician and 00:21:51.43\00:21:52.87 masters-trained nutrition specialist. 00:21:52.88\00:21:55.18 Hildelisa, it's always great to have you on the program. 00:21:55.24\00:21:57.39 Thank you for having me. 00:21:57.45\00:21:58.75 We've been talking in previous episodes about weight-- 00:21:59.00\00:22:02.48 the huge problems that Americans are facing in this area. 00:22:02.54\00:22:05.33 And I know a lot of times some people say we're just 00:22:05.51\00:22:08.03 hyping this up as health professionals. 00:22:08.15\00:22:10.18 Is this everything that it's blown up to be? 00:22:10.27\00:22:13.15 Well, I think so. 00:22:13.36\00:22:14.57 You know, 67 percent of Americans, or of adults, 00:22:14.63\00:22:18.30 are either overweight or obese. 00:22:18.36\00:22:21.24 And this of course poses a great risk for chronic disease 00:22:21.48\00:22:24.54 such as diabetes and hypertension and heart disease. 00:22:24.55\00:22:28.42 And how much does obesity have to do with these diseases? 00:22:28.57\00:22:33.15 Just for example, just a couple of examples, 00:22:33.21\00:22:35.87 according to the CDC, 00:22:36.06\00:22:37.54 80 percent of obesity, or excuse me, of diabetes, 00:22:37.66\00:22:42.81 is related to obesity. 00:22:42.84\00:22:44.57 - So this is not a radical group. 00:22:44.81\00:22:46.00 Centers for Disease Control is 00:22:46.09\00:22:47.33 a well-recognized government agency. 00:22:47.36\00:22:49.69 And they're saying that 80 percent of diabetes in America 00:22:49.70\00:22:52.54 is due to obesity, at least in part? 00:22:52.66\00:22:54.33 Right, and 70 percent of heart disease, 00:22:54.45\00:22:58.45 cardiovascular disease, is due to obesity, too. 00:22:58.63\00:23:02.27 So we've got to get some more practical hints today 00:23:02.30\00:23:05.09 how people can help trim those waistlines, 00:23:05.15\00:23:08.72 and as a registered dietician, 00:23:08.81\00:23:10.57 you've got great expertise in this area. 00:23:10.58\00:23:12.66 What kind of things do you find connect with people? 00:23:12.75\00:23:15.30 What kind of practical things help them to lose a few pounds? 00:23:15.45\00:23:18.21 Well, there are three basic strategies 00:23:18.33\00:23:20.24 to help with weight loss. 00:23:20.25\00:23:21.45 Number one, that would be to eat more foods 00:23:21.63\00:23:24.03 that are low in energy density. 00:23:24.06\00:23:26.72 Number two, to be physically active, 00:23:27.06\00:23:29.15 and number three, to reduce portion sizes. 00:23:29.21\00:23:32.30 Now portions, of course, this is the main contributor 00:23:32.42\00:23:35.78 to obesity in our country, because 00:23:35.79\00:23:37.75 Americans eat too much. 00:23:37.76\00:23:39.69 We have oversized our plates and ourselves. 00:23:39.81\00:23:42.60 But I mean, it's not really our fault, is it? 00:23:43.00\00:23:44.36 Because you go into a restaurant or a fast food place 00:23:44.37\00:23:47.24 and they want to give you some kind of supersize serving. 00:23:47.25\00:23:49.84 Isn't that the way it works? You get more for your money? 00:23:49.87\00:23:51.69 That's right, and you know, 00:23:52.09\00:23:53.75 when we're talking about portions you hear those words 00:23:53.81\00:23:56.75 'serving' and 'portions' used interchangeably. 00:23:56.87\00:23:59.75 But they refer to different things. 00:23:59.81\00:24:02.00 Okay, wait a minute. So if someone says, 00:24:02.12\00:24:03.63 "One serving of broccoli," 00:24:03.78\00:24:06.18 that's different than a portion of broccoli? 00:24:06.30\00:24:08.72 Yes. - Make this clear for us. 00:24:08.73\00:24:10.66 - How does that work? 00:24:10.78\00:24:11.84 Well, a serving is not what you happen to put on your plate. 00:24:11.87\00:24:15.54 A serving is actually a specific amount of food 00:24:15.55\00:24:19.27 defined in common measurement 00:24:19.28\00:24:21.45 such as cups and tablespoons. 00:24:21.51\00:24:23.87 Basically to make recommendations 00:24:24.15\00:24:26.72 for the basic food groups. 00:24:26.73\00:24:28.75 Okay, so a serving is kind of dietician, 00:24:29.09\00:24:31.48 medical specialist language. 00:24:31.51\00:24:33.60 Right. It's the recommended amount of food. 00:24:33.81\00:24:35.60 Help me here. Let's say someone says, 00:24:36.03\00:24:38.51 "A serving of meat." What does that look like? 00:24:38.52\00:24:41.33 Okay, a serving of meat is going to look 00:24:41.36\00:24:43.60 basically like a deck of cards. 00:24:43.61\00:24:45.36 It's about 2 to 3 ounces of meat. 00:24:45.37\00:24:47.24 A deck of cards-- I mean, that's tiny! 00:24:47.27\00:24:50.12 Because a portion, what someone puts on their plate, 00:24:50.21\00:24:53.30 is usually much bigger than that, isn't it? 00:24:53.45\00:24:55.21 Right, so a portion is actually 00:24:55.24\00:24:56.87 what you choose to put on your plate. 00:24:56.88\00:24:58.87 And that could be smaller or larger 00:24:59.24\00:25:01.54 than the recommended serving size. 00:25:01.57\00:25:03.84 Okay, so can we use this information somehow, 00:25:04.12\00:25:07.09 this portion size information, 00:25:07.21\00:25:08.75 to plan our plates, to plan our meals? 00:25:08.78\00:25:11.24 Yes. Now, the first thing you want to do 00:25:11.25\00:25:13.87 to reduce your portion size is to use smaller plates. 00:25:14.00\00:25:17.63 Now you know that in the 1960s 00:25:17.78\00:25:20.78 the average dinner plate was 9 inches, 00:25:21.15\00:25:25.00 and it held about 800 calories. 00:25:25.27\00:25:28.15 Through the years, that of course has increased, 00:25:28.27\00:25:30.75 and now we have 12-inch plates 00:25:30.81\00:25:33.30 that can hold up to 1900 calories. 00:25:33.36\00:25:37.36 And here, I ran across this plate, 00:25:37.63\00:25:40.69 it's called the Portion Plate. 00:25:40.70\00:25:42.33 And it's a 9-inch plate, 00:25:42.39\00:25:44.36 and it has different pictures that illustrates 00:25:44.54\00:25:47.06 different portions that they recommend for different foods. 00:25:47.12\00:25:50.21 But what I like best is that it 00:25:50.24\00:25:52.33 gives what an ideal meal should be. 00:25:52.36\00:25:55.00 And what is that? I mean, how does it 00:25:55.21\00:25:56.30 show you an ideal meal? 00:25:56.31\00:25:57.39 Well, you can do this with your own plate. 00:25:57.42\00:25:59.27 And that would be, you divide it in half, 00:25:59.51\00:26:01.33 and half of the plate should be your fruits or vegetables, 00:26:01.45\00:26:04.81 And then the next half, the second half, 00:26:04.84\00:26:07.66 you divide it again in half, 00:26:07.67\00:26:09.03 so one quarter of the plate should be your healthy grains, 00:26:09.04\00:26:11.60 and the rest, the remaining quarter, 00:26:11.69\00:26:14.03 would be the protein food. 00:26:14.04\00:26:15.87 And I recommend that be plant-based proteins like beans. 00:26:15.88\00:26:18.72 So basically I can lose weight-- 00:26:19.03\00:26:20.69 I mean, I don't want to lose weight, 00:26:20.70\00:26:22.12 but if someone's trying to lose weight, 00:26:22.21\00:26:24.33 they can simply cut their plate in half, 00:26:24.34\00:26:26.57 put half of that plate into fruits and vegetables, 00:26:26.66\00:26:29.48 the other half divide it into quarters, if you will, 00:26:29.57\00:26:32.45 and you've got the protein foods and the whole grains. 00:26:32.51\00:26:35.15 I'm Dr. David DeRose. 00:26:35.18\00:26:36.39 Hopefully you've learned some things today that will help you 00:26:36.48\00:26:38.69 reach your health goals. 00:26:38.81\00:26:39.84 If you want more information, simply go to: 00:26:40.21\00:26:42.03 Modern views of evolution stem all the way back 00:26:52.09\00:26:54.60 to theories developed in the mid-1800s. 00:26:54.63\00:26:57.12 Out of the same time period came ideas that shape 00:26:57.69\00:27:01.09 our educational system today. 00:27:01.12\00:27:03.27 The Common School Movement, for example, 00:27:03.81\00:27:06.18 saw schools more like a factory, 00:27:06.54\00:27:08.45 with students blindly memorizing instruction 00:27:08.46\00:27:11.21 rather than thinking for themselves. 00:27:11.24\00:27:13.21 Their curriculum was rigid and theoretical. 00:27:13.66\00:27:16.21 Instead of being flexible and practical, 00:27:16.22\00:27:19.06 it was designed to conform the individual 00:27:19.21\00:27:21.60 into a specific ideological mold 00:27:21.69\00:27:24.24 that fit the needs of an old industrial era 00:27:24.48\00:27:27.03 long since passed. 00:27:27.04\00:27:28.42 Just like our view of creation in six literal days, 00:27:29.69\00:27:33.03 we believe the Bible contains an educational blueprint 00:27:33.12\00:27:37.12 radically different from the one we see now. 00:27:37.39\00:27:39.75 Well friends, that's it for today. 00:27:53.03\00:27:54.60 Pick up the phone and give us a call at: 00:27:54.66\00:27:56.33 May God bless you. 00:28:04.09\00:28:05.75
