Oh yes, yeah. 00:12:23.42\00:12:25.87 And you know, as the numbers of diabetics expand 00:12:25.88\00:12:30.21 and the kidneys fail, 00:12:30.24\00:12:31.69 I don't know how the healthcare system 00:12:31.87\00:12:33.69 is going to be able to put everybody 00:12:33.70\00:12:35.81 on dialysis that needs it. 00:12:35.82\00:12:37.36 But we've never done any research 00:12:37.48\00:12:39.42 here at the NEWSTART program. 00:12:39.51\00:12:41.39 No, we've just had anecdotal cases, 00:12:41.57\00:12:44.81 but now we want to try to follow this up. 00:12:45.03\00:12:47.81 And the anecdotal cases have been 00:12:48.03\00:12:50.06 encouraging enough so that we want to do that. 00:12:50.24\00:12:53.15 Now with Al's case, 00:12:53.39\00:12:55.39 tell us about some of the changes 00:12:55.40\00:12:57.54 that you are witnessing as his doctor. 00:12:57.63\00:13:01.12 Well, one of the things is 00:13:01.66\00:13:03.33 when I saw him, they said, "Would NEWSTART help us?" 00:13:03.57\00:13:06.45 And I said, "Well, we have seen this in the past." 00:13:06.48\00:13:09.72 Frequently what will happen, though, 00:13:09.84\00:13:11.51 is that their numbers stay the same or they get worse 00:13:11.60\00:13:14.30 for some reason while they're here, 00:13:14.45\00:13:17.03 but his didn't. 00:13:17.12\00:13:18.36 His BUN and his creatinine are going in the right direction. 00:13:18.66\00:13:22.51 And that's exciting to see that. 00:13:22.78\00:13:25.66 But typically they get worse before they get better? 00:13:26.54\00:13:29.27 They can. Sometimes the BUN changes 00:13:29.48\00:13:32.81 more quickly than the creatinine does. 00:13:32.82\00:13:35.18 And that may come down a little bit, 00:13:35.39\00:13:37.69 but the creatinine may go up a little bit, 00:13:37.72\00:13:39.63 and I'm not sure how that happens, but it does. 00:13:39.72\00:13:42.39 But in his situation, his numbers 00:13:42.54\00:13:44.69 both went in the right direction. 00:13:44.70\00:13:46.81 So we've got a candidate for a reversal situation here, 00:13:47.18\00:13:51.24 hopefully, or prayerfully, I should say. 00:13:51.45\00:13:54.00 Yeah, and the 2 things that are very important to realizing this 00:13:54.01\00:13:58.54 is that when it's hypertensive kidney disease, 00:13:58.69\00:14:03.81 it's harder, because it's a different mechanism. 00:14:04.24\00:14:07.60 With the diabetic kidney disease, 00:14:07.78\00:14:11.36 what's happening is that those tiny little blood vessels 00:14:11.54\00:14:14.78 are slowly, slowly getting less and less circulation 00:14:14.87\00:14:18.36 right there to the cells, and the cells are getting sick, 00:14:18.54\00:14:22.27 they're getting weak, and they're actually dying off. 00:14:22.51\00:14:26.00 And then, I mean, he's down to where he should be on dialysis, 00:14:26.24\00:14:30.00 and in fact they've already said that 00:14:30.15\00:14:33.18 they want to get him started for that. 00:14:33.27\00:14:35.18 He would do the one where they do it in the peritoneum, 00:14:35.57\00:14:39.15 They'll put a cannula in there, 00:14:39.30\00:14:42.33 and then he'll be able to hook into that, 00:14:42.36\00:14:45.69 and every night he'll have to have the fluids 00:14:46.00\00:14:48.03 going in and out, in and out. 00:14:48.04\00:14:50.09 And yeah, it's a different life. 00:14:50.33\00:14:52.57 But we have a cure, more or less. 00:14:52.84\00:14:54.78 We know-- I'm saying "we," 00:14:54.87\00:14:57.27 the NEWSTART program aided by our doctors-- 00:14:57.48\00:15:01.48 know that a plant-based diet... 00:15:01.54\00:15:04.21 Healed by God. 00:15:04.27\00:15:05.45 - Healed by God. 00:15:05.57\00:15:06.60 And he kept saying that. 00:15:06.61\00:15:07.72 And he said that in our interview if you recall. 00:15:08.15\00:15:11.06 And every kind of healing comes from God. 00:15:11.18\00:15:13.39 Well tell our viewers about this... 00:15:13.42\00:15:17.12 what is extracted by our bodies 00:15:17.36\00:15:19.60 as we eat this plant-based diet. 00:15:19.61\00:15:21.81 Okay, well there's two things that happen. 00:15:22.09\00:15:24.30 One of them is that you have a smaller load on those kidneys. 00:15:24.45\00:15:29.63 And the reason is, is that the proteins that we eat 00:15:30.00\00:15:33.45 are different. 00:15:33.75\00:15:35.87 The amino acids are the same, 00:15:36.27\00:15:39.27 but the ratio of amino acids, 00:15:39.39\00:15:41.60 that keep coming in from the plant sources 00:15:41.63\00:15:44.03 and the ones at our bodies are using up. 00:15:44.06\00:15:46.27 When we get the ones from the meat, milk, and eggs, 00:15:46.48\00:15:49.42 those are going to overload in the areas that we're not using. 00:15:50.06\00:15:54.21 And so the kidneys have to filter all that stuff out, 00:15:54.33\00:15:58.87 and it's a bigger and bigger load. 00:15:59.12\00:16:01.03 The second thing is, that's so important to know, 00:16:01.09\00:16:03.39 is that when those kidneys start getting the blood circulation 00:16:03.60\00:16:07.21 going to them, 00:16:07.33\00:16:08.63 then they're going to get healthier and healthier. 00:16:08.78\00:16:12.51 And so as those little filtration units in the kidneys, 00:16:12.60\00:16:16.63 the little nephron units, get healthier, 00:16:16.75\00:16:18.72 then they start doing their work again. 00:16:18.84\00:16:21.15 And the way that we know that they're getting healthier 00:16:21.27\00:16:25.00 is that frequently the amount of protein 00:16:25.12\00:16:27.15 that's dumped into the urine is less. 00:16:27.21\00:16:29.42 Protein shouldn't be in the urine. 00:16:29.51\00:16:31.33 But we're going to be reassured 00:16:31.51\00:16:33.45 that if we go on a plant-based diet 00:16:33.46\00:16:35.57 that there's a certain chemical that comes from these plants 00:16:35.72\00:16:39.33 that expands those little capillaries and arteries. 00:16:39.45\00:16:42.45 It's the prostaglandins. 00:16:42.46\00:16:43.72 The prostaglandins, there's that word again! 00:16:43.75\00:16:45.87 Yep, there it is. 00:16:46.00\00:16:47.12 And we can see it at work in Al. 00:16:47.15\00:16:49.78 - And can we tell our viewers... 00:16:50.63\00:16:52.69 - Is that all they need to do, is just become vegan? 00:16:52.75\00:16:56.63 Yes, drink lots of water, and get their exercise, and do all-- 00:16:57.00\00:17:01.51 NEWSTART is a whole program. 00:17:01.57\00:17:04.33 It's something that gives health to all parts of the body. 00:17:04.42\00:17:09.12 The heart has to be strong and able to pump, 00:17:09.24\00:17:12.60 so that the blood can be pumped 00:17:12.63\00:17:15.24 through the kidneys and filtered out. 00:17:15.25\00:17:16.63 So all of these things all work together. 00:17:16.81\00:17:18.60 It's very harmonious. 00:17:18.75\00:17:20.18 And I like what Al has said 00:17:20.24\00:17:22.27 about the Lord working in his life. 00:17:22.51\00:17:24.75 And he knows that you have to have this trust in God. 00:17:25.12\00:17:28.12 And that's one of the... part of the acronym of NEWSTART. 00:17:28.33\00:17:34.30 And I'd like you to tell our viewers once again, 00:17:34.51\00:17:37.15 and I know we've discussed it in the past, 00:17:37.24\00:17:39.09 but what is that acronym, NEWSTART? 00:17:39.24\00:17:42.54 N stands for Nutrition, and E stands for Exercise, 00:17:42.81\00:17:47.18 Water, Sunlight, Temperance-- 00:17:47.30\00:17:50.63 That's a big one. - That's a big one. 00:17:50.75\00:17:53.48 Air, Rest-- We don't get that as we should. 00:17:53.60\00:17:58.51 A lot of people are on the NEWSTAT program. 00:17:58.69\00:18:01.15 Go, go, go, go, go! 00:18:01.30\00:18:03.69 Never get their rest, 00:18:03.75\00:18:05.30 never give the body a chance to heal. 00:18:05.31\00:18:08.00 And then of course the last one is Trusting in the Healer. 00:18:08.21\00:18:11.66 The thing that I'd like to come back and say, though, about Al, 00:18:11.87\00:18:15.60 is that his diabetes was hard to control. 00:18:15.75\00:18:19.15 And they had him on a long-acting insulin, 00:18:19.57\00:18:24.21 and that was a wonderful thing, you know. 00:18:24.33\00:18:25.75 He needed to have that. 00:18:25.78\00:18:27.66 But he had such a low blood sugar at one stage 00:18:27.81\00:18:32.54 that he actually went into insulin shock, 00:18:32.55\00:18:36.42 and while he was thrashing around 00:18:36.48\00:18:38.75 he hit himself on the shin here. 00:18:38.87\00:18:41.12 He has a big ole sore like that that's... 00:18:41.24\00:18:44.60 Yeah, and his blood sugars have been 00:18:44.78\00:18:46.66 hard to control while he was here. 00:18:46.67\00:18:48.63 And the blood pressure itself 00:18:48.72\00:18:51.18 has responded some, 00:18:51.30\00:18:52.60 but it's still going up and down. 00:18:52.75\00:18:54.15 So this is a long haul, 00:18:54.24\00:18:56.09 but what we've seen in the past 00:18:56.18\00:18:57.66 is people that should have been on dialysis 00:18:57.69\00:19:00.21 that haven't had to go on it. 00:19:00.30\00:19:02.66 We followed one lady for seven years. 00:19:02.75\00:19:05.06 And other people have come with a shunt already in their arm, 00:19:05.36\00:19:09.54 or the shunt is plugged up 00:19:09.69\00:19:11.18 and now they're going to have to use the other arm. 00:19:11.24\00:19:13.03 And this is really... 00:19:13.18\00:19:16.69 This dialysis thing isn't a fun thing. 00:19:16.75\00:19:19.87 And people would say, "Well, you know, 00:19:19.88\00:19:21.57 they've got these things that work so well now, 00:19:21.66\00:19:24.30 and I'm just going to go in, 00:19:24.39\00:19:26.21 and I'll just have to go in and have them 00:19:26.27\00:19:28.39 cleanse my blood every once in a while." 00:19:28.42\00:19:30.36 But it's not like that. 00:19:30.37\00:19:32.33 And they're always hoping and thinking, "Hey, you know, 00:19:32.45\00:19:35.45 in the future we're going to get better stuff. 00:19:35.63\00:19:37.69 And you can always get a kidney transplant." 00:19:38.09\00:19:40.75 But the thing is, is there just aren't 00:19:40.84\00:19:42.84 enough of those to go around. 00:19:42.85\00:19:44.54 And so do it, do it early, so that you don't... 00:19:44.69\00:19:48.69 you know, you can have a lot more of your body working. 00:19:48.81\00:19:52.27 You can still have your pancreas working. 00:19:52.48\00:19:54.57 And we know that when we bring the blood sugar down, 00:19:54.72\00:19:57.57 and when we get the body healthy so that we don't have to 00:19:57.72\00:20:00.51 take the medications to try to get this to happen, 00:20:00.52\00:20:03.87 we know that health is going to come. 00:20:04.12\00:20:08.12 And now more and more in the literature they're saying 00:20:08.21\00:20:11.12 the more medications you have to take, 00:20:11.27\00:20:13.18 the more insulin that you have to give, 00:20:13.21\00:20:15.24 the tougher it is on your body. 00:20:15.36\00:20:17.81 And when we do it with the lifestyle, 00:20:18.03\00:20:21.00 it's a win-win situation. 00:20:21.21\00:20:23.51 I'm so grateful that you're here 00:20:23.84\00:20:26.66 and that we have a program to help diabetics, 00:20:26.78\00:20:30.09 especially people with this renal condition. 00:20:30.24\00:20:33.75 And I know that you're going to be following him pretty closely, 00:20:33.87\00:20:37.06 as well as I will. - And others, yeah. 00:20:37.21\00:20:39.03 And if there's people in our area here, you know, 00:20:39.27\00:20:42.30 that are within about an hour's drive, 00:20:42.31\00:20:45.00 or even maybe two hours, 00:20:45.01\00:20:46.57 if they know about this, come through the program. 00:20:46.69\00:20:48.75 We'd like to follow you. 00:20:48.87\00:20:50.45 And he's already ready for dialysis. 00:20:50.51\00:20:53.72 They want to do it. They said, you know, 00:20:53.78\00:20:56.45 "You can't continue to live. 00:20:56.81\00:20:58.06 You can't be healthy unless you have it." 00:20:58.07\00:20:59.63 And that's true, except that 00:21:00.00\00:21:01.63 his kidneys are starting to work better already. 00:21:01.64\00:21:04.48 I think, Doctor Lukens, you've given some people here 00:21:04.84\00:21:07.72 watching us right now, you've given them some hope. 00:21:07.87\00:21:10.45 Well, I hope that that's true, 00:21:10.69\00:21:12.72 because it really, really works. 00:21:12.78\00:21:14.63 And is there any last-minute advice? 00:21:15.00\00:21:17.45 We've got just a few seconds left. 00:21:17.63\00:21:19.06 Yeah, come! We'll be right back. 00:21:40.63\00:21:43.84 Welcome to NEWSTART at Home. 00:21:57.87\00:21:59.48 I'm Dr. David DeRose, your host today, 00:21:59.49\00:22:01.81 and with me is Hildelisa Flickinger, 00:22:02.00\00:22:04.24 a masters-trained nutritionist and registered dietician. 00:22:04.36\00:22:08.09 Hildelisa, it's great to be on the show again with you. 00:22:08.15\00:22:10.72 Glad to be here. 00:22:10.84\00:22:12.24 You've been looking at a real important topic, 00:22:12.51\00:22:15.24 and that is the topic of beverages. 00:22:15.30\00:22:18.15 There's a lot of stuff out there in the shelves 00:22:18.24\00:22:20.45 of stores and gas stations. 00:22:20.48\00:22:23.51 Should we be thinking about what we're drinking? 00:22:23.54\00:22:26.12 Is that important? 00:22:26.15\00:22:27.21 Oh, definitely! We all know the importance 00:22:27.39\00:22:29.57 of proper hydration for our bodies. 00:22:29.63\00:22:31.45 And as you well know, 00:22:31.66\00:22:33.09 there's no system in the body that does not depend on water. 00:22:33.15\00:22:36.51 So now people may be asking, 00:22:36.75\00:22:38.33 "Well, how much water should we drink?" 00:22:38.39\00:22:40.09 And just a basic rule is 00:22:40.24\00:22:42.51 8 to 10 eight-ounce glasses of water a day, 00:22:42.57\00:22:45.36 or just enough to keep the urine pale. 00:22:45.37\00:22:48.36 Okay, now that's for an adult, presumably. 00:22:48.66\00:22:50.30 Yes. 00:22:50.33\00:22:51.33 Because I know you've got some young children. 00:22:51.34\00:22:52.84 You're not making them drink 00:22:53.00\00:22:54.33 8 to 10 glasses of water a day, are you? 00:22:54.34\00:22:56.21 No, that might be too much. - Okay. 00:22:56.22\00:22:58.51 Now, another question that people often have is 00:22:58.87\00:23:02.09 "Should we wait until we're hungry? 00:23:02.18\00:23:03.51 I'll just wait until I'm thirsty 00:23:03.63\00:23:05.84 to drink water." 00:23:06.00\00:23:07.30 Well no, you should not wait, 00:23:07.39\00:23:09.15 because by that time you have some degree of dehydration. 00:23:09.16\00:23:12.69 And of course dehydration has many symptoms and problems, 00:23:12.84\00:23:16.84 one of which is that it lowers your metabolic rate. 00:23:16.87\00:23:20.33 And of course, if someone's trying to lose weight, 00:23:20.51\00:23:22.72 that is not good news. 00:23:22.78\00:23:24.42 So drinking more water can actually 00:23:24.60\00:23:26.75 help a person lose weight? 00:23:26.76\00:23:28.36 Yes, and not only that. 00:23:28.51\00:23:30.18 Studies have shown that adequate water intake 00:23:30.21\00:23:33.57 can help decrease the risk of some cancers, 00:23:33.63\00:23:36.87 and cardiovascular disease, and so on and so forth. 00:23:37.06\00:23:40.33 So water is really good stuff. 00:23:40.72\00:23:42.39 But there's a lot of people, Hildelisa-- 00:23:42.45\00:23:44.03 you know it as well as I do-- 00:23:44.12\00:23:45.48 that they say, "Listen. 00:23:45.49\00:23:46.60 I just don't like water." 00:23:46.72\00:23:48.66 What do you do for those people? 00:23:48.72\00:23:50.12 That's right. 00:23:50.13\00:23:51.15 Now, there are so many beverages out there 00:23:51.18\00:23:53.36 of course, and so many options for people. 00:23:53.37\00:23:55.84 But still, what do you think is the best 00:23:55.85\00:23:57.75 option for supplying our fluid needs? 00:23:58.03\00:24:00.54 Well it seems pretty clear to me from the medical research 00:24:00.69\00:24:02.87 literature that it's just pure H2O. 00:24:03.03\00:24:05.63 That's right - water. 00:24:06.00\00:24:07.24 Now there are some recent trends out there 00:24:07.33\00:24:10.00 in beverages, specifically in bottled waters. 00:24:10.03\00:24:13.45 And you've probably seen them. 00:24:13.57\00:24:16.48 You really can't miss them. 00:24:16.49\00:24:18.15 When you go to the grocery store you see the big displays, 00:24:18.24\00:24:21.09 the colorful bottles. 00:24:21.10\00:24:22.48 And one of the most popular is 00:24:22.51\00:24:25.09 one that they have added vitamins 00:24:25.10\00:24:27.45 and other ingredients to. 00:24:27.46\00:24:30.72 So these so-called flavored waters, 00:24:30.84\00:24:32.69 is that what we're talking about? 00:24:32.81\00:24:34.03 Yes, they're called enhanced waters. 00:24:34.15\00:24:36.30 Okay, enhanced waters. 00:24:36.36\00:24:38.06 That's right, and I have a bottle of it right here. 00:24:38.24\00:24:41.15 This is one of the most popular ones. 00:24:41.16\00:24:43.51 And I gave you a label, 00:24:43.63\00:24:45.48 and you're going to help me read the label. 00:24:45.54\00:24:47.54 We're going to see what comes 00:24:47.57\00:24:49.30 together with those added vitamins. 00:24:49.33\00:24:51.15 So what is the serving size? 00:24:51.16\00:24:53.09 Okay, serving size...per... 00:24:53.18\00:24:55.69 That container there, 00:24:55.70\00:24:57.66 it's got 2 -1/2 servings, it says. 00:24:57.67\00:25:00.63 That's right. The serving size is 8 ounces, 00:25:00.75\00:25:03.66 but it is a 20-ounce bottle. 00:25:03.78\00:25:05.87 So it has 2-1/2 servings. 00:25:06.09\00:25:08.12 Now how many calories per serving does it say? 00:25:08.15\00:25:10.54 Okay, I'm looking here. 00:25:10.69\00:25:12.42 Wow, it's got 13 grams of sugar in it, 00:25:12.57\00:25:15.84 and calories, 50! 00:25:16.06\00:25:18.42 Fifty calories! 00:25:18.45\00:25:19.51 And that is per serving. 00:25:19.66\00:25:20.87 So in a bottle you're going to have 125 calories 00:25:21.06\00:25:24.18 and 32-1/2 grams of sugar. 00:25:24.21\00:25:26.75 That's 8 teaspoons of sugar, 00:25:26.78\00:25:28.30 just a little less than a can of soda. 00:25:28.39\00:25:30.54 Eight teaspoons of sugar? 00:25:30.57\00:25:32.15 And they're selling this as... 00:25:32.21\00:25:33.60 Why do they call that enhanced? 00:25:33.63\00:25:35.12 I like flavored better than enhanced. 00:25:35.21\00:25:37.24 Enhanced makes it sound like it's better. 00:25:37.27\00:25:38.60 Yes, it's enhanced because it has added vitamins. 00:25:38.84\00:25:41.69 They've added vitamin A, vitamin C, and B vitamins. 00:25:41.70\00:25:45.57 But if you look closely at the label, 00:25:45.63\00:25:47.66 you'd have to drink the whole bottle 00:25:47.75\00:25:49.84 to get 100 percent of the RDAs for the B vitamins. 00:25:50.00\00:25:53.33 So basically if you're eating a balanced diet 00:25:53.48\00:25:58.39 or just taking a multivitamin, 00:25:58.42\00:26:00.42 you're just not going to get any benefit 00:26:00.51\00:26:02.78 from drinking these enhanced waters. 00:26:02.84\00:26:05.18 So this is looking more like a soft drink, 00:26:05.30\00:26:07.87 not a nutrition supplement. 00:26:08.09\00:26:09.78 Wow, so I would be better off if I'm concerned about 00:26:09.81\00:26:12.51 my vitamins, to just take a pill, 00:26:12.57\00:26:14.57 a multivitamin, with a good, pure glass of water, 00:26:14.78\00:26:19.81 maybe even from my tap. 00:26:19.84\00:26:21.48 That's right, and you won't get all the calories from this, 00:26:21.78\00:26:24.30 which is not going to help your weight. 00:26:24.33\00:26:27.06 Tremendous. 00:26:27.21\00:26:28.30 Hildelisa Flickinger has just given us another great insight 00:26:28.39\00:26:31.33 into how we can improve our health 00:26:31.34\00:26:33.39 and prevent weight gain. 00:26:33.45\00:26:35.72 Make a point of drinking adequate amounts of water 00:26:35.75\00:26:38.81 and choose the simple variety of water 00:26:38.87\00:26:42.39 that God made in the beginning-- just pure H2O. 00:26:42.40\00:26:44.78 I'm Dr. David DeRose. 00:26:45.03\00:26:46.27 You can get more information at: 00:26:46.28\00:26:48.12 Modern views of evolution stem all the way back 00:26:58.30\00:27:00.81 to theories developed in the mid-1800s. 00:27:00.84\00:27:03.33 Out of the same time period came ideas that shape 00:27:04.00\00:27:07.30 our educational system today. 00:27:07.33\00:27:09.48 The Common School Movement, for example, 00:27:10.12\00:27:12.39 saw schools more like a factory, 00:27:12.75\00:27:14.66 with students blindly memorizing instruction 00:27:14.67\00:27:17.42 rather than thinking for themselves. 00:27:17.45\00:27:19.42 Their curriculum was rigid and theoretical. 00:27:19.87\00:27:22.42 Instead of being flexible and practical, 00:27:22.43\00:27:25.27 it was designed to conform the individual 00:27:25.42\00:27:27.81 into a specific ideological mold 00:27:28.00\00:27:30.45 that fit the needs of an old industrial era 00:27:30.69\00:27:33.24 long since passed. 00:27:33.25\00:27:34.63 Just like our view of creation in six literal days, 00:27:36.00\00:27:39.24 we believe the Bible contains an educational blueprint 00:27:39.33\00:27:43.33 radically different from the one we see now. 00:27:43.60\00:27:46.06 Well, friends, that's it for today. 00:27:59.24\00:28:00.78 Pick up the phone and give us a call at: 00:28:00.81\00:28:02.87
