Hi friends, and welcome to another edition of NEWSTART NOW. 00:00:23.87\00:00:27.21 I've got an unusual story here for you today, 00:00:27.69\00:00:30.54 one that we've never seen before, 00:00:30.87\00:00:32.54 but, rather than me tell you about it let's take a look 00:00:33.09\00:00:35.57 at when Rick first arrived here 00:00:35.81\00:00:37.75 at the NEWSTART program at Weimar. 00:00:37.76\00:00:39.81 About nine months ago 00:00:41.45\00:00:43.03 began having numbness in the feet, 00:00:43.18\00:00:45.27 and spread throughout my body. 00:00:45.28\00:00:47.09 With going from doctor to doctor, 00:00:48.27\00:00:50.06 and no diagnosis, but every test in the world. 00:00:50.24\00:00:54.18 So I came here looking for answers, and not pills. 00:00:55.21\00:00:59.18 I never thought I would ever come here, 00:00:59.63\00:01:01.42 I thought it was for other people, 00:01:01.75\00:01:03.30 but here I am, and it's where I should be right now. 00:01:03.51\00:01:07.69 Currently I'm on several medications. 00:01:08.06\00:01:10.09 One to deaden the nerve sensation, 00:01:10.84\00:01:13.18 and I've started to lose 00:01:13.19\00:01:14.66 strength, and having quite a bit of 00:01:15.30\00:01:17.18 strength in the shoulders right now. 00:01:17.19\00:01:19.06 I want to be where I was before this started. 00:01:19.81\00:01:22.12 I've gained some weight which I know doesn't help, 00:01:23.24\00:01:26.33 But the fatigue of the illness has caused 00:01:27.45\00:01:29.48 some of that-- I'm hoping with exercise and diet 00:01:29.49\00:01:31.78 that that will improve, 00:01:32.45\00:01:33.60 and I can continue that on after I leave. 00:01:33.61\00:01:35.63 Well here we are in the studio, Rick 00:01:37.42\00:01:39.42 thanks for joining us. - My pleasure. 00:01:39.72\00:01:41.60 Good to see you. 00:01:41.72\00:01:42.87 And you know, I watch you now and after talking with you, 00:01:43.30\00:01:47.00 you at one point in your life was 00:01:47.45\00:01:49.36 a pretty husky strong individual, 00:01:49.37\00:01:51.24 then all of a sudden, you've lost your strength 00:01:51.69\00:01:54.00 you've had all these tests 00:01:54.48\00:01:56.30 nobody knows what's going on with you. 00:01:56.75\00:01:59.00 Is that fair to say? 00:01:59.01\00:02:00.12 That's a very fair assessment. - Ok. 00:02:00.30\00:02:02.27 So what possessed you to choose to come 00:02:02.75\00:02:06.48 to the NEWSTART program? Why here? Why not... 00:02:07.00\00:02:09.27 Why not Mayo clinic or someplace 00:02:09.54\00:02:12.36 where they can really analyze what's going on? 00:02:12.69\00:02:15.15 I thought I had gone through all those kinds of testing, 00:02:15.72\00:02:19.15 and diagnosis, trying, and the prescription drugs, and 00:02:19.60\00:02:23.39 I wasn't really enthusiastic about 00:02:24.15\00:02:26.30 continuing on that path and I was ready to take a... 00:02:26.31\00:02:29.36 you might say, a time out. 00:02:29.78\00:02:30.87 Yes. - and try something different. 00:02:31.24\00:02:33.45 And they put you on different medications, to try 00:02:34.00\00:02:37.39 actually to see if they would in fact 00:02:37.84\00:02:40.75 change your situation I guess 00:02:41.15\00:02:42.57 that's what they do, practice medicine. 00:02:42.58\00:02:44.48 I think my body was 00:02:44.87\00:02:46.27 speaking loud volumes and they wanted to put a muffler on it. 00:02:46.66\00:02:49.48 They were trying to silence 00:02:49.81\00:02:51.75 what I think my body was trying to tell me at the time. 00:02:52.18\00:02:54.75 Yes. 00:02:55.18\00:02:56.30 You described to me that you were 00:02:56.72\00:02:59.09 unable just to even hug somebody 00:02:59.10\00:03:01.21 you couldn't lift your arms. 00:03:01.57\00:03:03.18 I couldn't lift my arms much above my 00:03:03.60\00:03:06.48 waist level. 00:03:07.81\00:03:08.84 It caused extreme pain. Putting a suit jacket on was 00:03:09.42\00:03:12.81 nearly impossible. 00:03:13.36\00:03:14.66 And the strength was draining quickly, 00:03:15.21\00:03:17.57 I could tell I was losing that fast. 00:03:17.58\00:03:19.75 What do they call this situation? 00:03:20.45\00:03:23.06 - I'm at a loss to tell you what it is, 00:03:24.81\00:03:27.78 the neuropathy was 00:03:28.33\00:03:29.81 numbness of the body, but the strength loss, 00:03:30.21\00:03:33.75 the pain, 00:03:34.30\00:03:35.66 and the loss of mobility 00:03:36.72\00:03:39.00 wasn't anything that anyone else could explain, 00:03:39.51\00:03:42.66 except for pain medication 00:03:42.67\00:03:44.42 deaden this, try a cortisone shots 00:03:44.87\00:03:47.69 different things that really... 00:03:48.36\00:03:50.06 if they did anything it was a temporary 00:03:50.07\00:03:52.12 adjustment but it came right back. 00:03:52.57\00:03:54.27 Ok, so now you're here, 00:03:54.81\00:03:56.57 at the NEWSTART program you've 00:03:57.00\00:03:59.06 been here 17 days, what's changed? 00:03:59.07\00:04:01.27 I think, my life turned upside 00:04:03.09\00:04:04.66 down is a pretty easy way to state it. 00:04:04.67\00:04:06.66 From diet to exercise to drinking so much 00:04:07.42\00:04:09.48 water I thought I was going to float away at first 00:04:09.49\00:04:12.00 but, 00:04:13.03\00:04:14.06 yeah everything in my life is different here 00:04:15.03\00:04:18.63 I think outside this 00:04:19.54\00:04:22.12 wonderful place is a life that was taking me down a road where 00:04:23.24\00:04:27.66 I was in trouble. And... 00:04:28.63\00:04:31.21 being here has made a huge 00:04:32.00\00:04:33.30 difference in just a very short amount of time. 00:04:33.31\00:04:35.54 You said to me just before we went on air that 00:04:36.18\00:04:39.45 you've had all these tests, 00:04:39.87\00:04:41.69 and all these tests mean to me probably 25 or 30... 00:04:42.24\00:04:45.78 Blood tests that even sometimes the 00:04:46.81\00:04:48.27 people at the clinics were saying, 00:04:48.28\00:04:49.54 I don't even know where 00:04:49.55\00:04:50.52 we're supposed to send this test. 00:04:50.53\00:04:51.66 -Yes. - Spinal taps, MRIs, Cat Scans. 00:04:51.81\00:04:55.27 Over and over and over, to the point where, 00:04:56.12\00:04:58.54 the neurologist, or the doctors basically said 00:04:58.81\00:05:01.57 I really don't know what to say, 00:05:02.12\00:05:04.06 maybe we should try somebody else. 00:05:04.48\00:05:06.42 So I was almost feeling like I was being 00:05:06.87\00:05:09.30 left adrift 00:05:09.75\00:05:11.27 in a sense in the medical system because 00:05:11.42\00:05:13.36 there wasn't a quick and easy solution. 00:05:13.37\00:05:15.24 - Yes. 00:05:15.36\00:05:16.36 And so in all these tests, 00:05:16.60\00:05:18.81 no one ever analyzed your blood for a deficiency 00:05:19.36\00:05:24.24 as far as nutrition, vitamins, minerals, etc. 00:05:24.69\00:05:28.42 Never came up. 00:05:29.21\00:05:30.24 Never did the question come up, 00:05:30.48\00:05:32.06 How much exercise are you getting? 00:05:32.07\00:05:33.60 Never came up, How much hydration are you 00:05:33.81\00:05:37.54 getting involved with each day? 00:05:38.09\00:05:40.33 Those kind of questions came out very quickly here. 00:05:40.78\00:05:43.36 Here they just came out right? Just a matter of... 00:05:43.63\00:05:45.84 - Minutes, when those questions were coming up. 00:05:46.24\00:05:49.03 - Boom, boom, just like that. - Yeah. 00:05:49.06\00:05:50.66 And so you discovered that you were not only 00:05:51.03\00:05:54.78 low in a vitamin called B12, 00:05:55.09\00:05:58.45 also vitamin D, which is pretty common 00:05:58.63\00:06:03.06 at this juncture in our country. 00:06:03.51\00:06:06.69 It certainly is here at the 00:06:07.24\00:06:09.33 NEWSTART-- or on the Weimar Campus. 00:06:09.34\00:06:11.84 Most of us on campus, 00:06:12.42\00:06:13.72 when we were tested last year were low in both 00:06:14.06\00:06:16.69 B12 and D. 00:06:17.09\00:06:18.54 So tell us what else has transpired with regards to that? 00:06:19.00\00:06:22.42 What did you do about it? 00:06:22.72\00:06:23.84 Well once we figured out what level I was at 00:06:24.00\00:06:27.72 I've gotten some B12 shots 00:06:28.15\00:06:30.09 I've been taking some supplements, 00:06:30.10\00:06:32.51 and the diet change obviously was a big part of that 00:06:33.18\00:06:35.66 No fat, raw foods eaten whole 00:06:36.81\00:06:39.66 Right! That is I think 00:06:39.84\00:06:41.51 pretty well understood here 00:06:41.52\00:06:43.30 And... is... 00:06:43.57\00:06:45.33 kind of the motto, I think is of... 00:06:45.60\00:06:47.48 Was it-- all the foods you ate were they all raw? 00:06:47.57\00:06:50.03 No they were cooked, I've had terrific lasagna, 00:06:50.48\00:06:54.48 had mexican food today that we 00:06:54.78\00:06:56.42 actually helped prepare ourselves today... 00:06:56.43\00:06:58.48 Yes! - our last day 00:06:58.60\00:07:00.12 at the campus here. 00:07:00.13\00:07:01.42 Ah, that's wonderful. 00:07:01.66\00:07:03.00 And so what part of this entire program 00:07:03.75\00:07:07.72 do you think had the most effect on you? 00:07:08.24\00:07:11.81 Wow, I don't know that I could answer 00:07:14.36\00:07:16.48 that in that respect, I would say that 00:07:16.49\00:07:18.57 I got here 00:07:19.15\00:07:20.24 for a... number of... 00:07:20.69\00:07:22.24 I would say a cocktail of reasons. 00:07:22.25\00:07:24.54 And... 00:07:25.09\00:07:26.63 And multiple solutions have come up. 00:07:27.18\00:07:29.18 So they're all to me equally grounded for me 00:07:29.69\00:07:33.15 as a solution of the challenges that I have. 00:07:33.42\00:07:36.36 If you were to teach-- 00:07:37.45\00:07:39.00 let's say you went back home and you found someone 00:07:39.18\00:07:41.30 who had a similar condition, 00:07:41.57\00:07:42.75 what would you tell them? How would you-- 00:07:42.76\00:07:44.51 how would you coach them back to health? 00:07:44.87\00:07:47.51 Well first I'd hopefully be a good example to them, 00:07:48.69\00:07:51.45 as a coach I would be a player coach. 00:07:51.46\00:07:53.39 You know, the exercise I think was the start for me, 00:07:53.63\00:07:57.66 sometimes I don't think we realize how 00:07:58.18\00:08:00.45 out of shape we are until we actually exercise. 00:08:00.60\00:08:03.54 The hydration is just one of those things you just have to do 00:08:05.42\00:08:08.27 and we all have different techniques, 00:08:09.03\00:08:11.51 I've found that drinking a lot of 00:08:11.87\00:08:13.51 water in the morning before exercise 00:08:13.52\00:08:15.24 got my engine started better than 00:08:15.69\00:08:17.39 trying to drink it later in the day. 00:08:17.40\00:08:19.18 And the diet... it comes natural here. 00:08:19.81\00:08:23.24 It's an easy place to start to learn the vegan diet versus 00:08:23.39\00:08:27.36 sampling or something else, 00:08:27.81\00:08:29.33 this is a good experience for that. 00:08:29.34\00:08:31.21 You taste buds change. It doesn't take very long. 00:08:31.84\00:08:35.12 So do you feel that this is a lifestyle 00:08:36.51\00:08:40.24 that you can easily live when you get home? 00:08:40.69\00:08:43.87 I think it will have it's 00:08:45.18\00:08:46.51 challenges but I think if you're determined 00:08:46.52\00:08:48.78 because you know where you came from, 00:08:49.36\00:08:51.24 and now you're knowing where you're heading. 00:08:51.25\00:08:53.36 There's a lot of-- how shall we say-- 00:08:53.78\00:08:55.87 momentum as you leave these doors, this campus, 00:08:55.88\00:08:58.48 that we hope to continue. 00:08:59.06\00:09:00.24 I don't suppose it's going to be easy, 00:09:01.06\00:09:03.60 but it didn't take overnight for me to get here either. 00:09:04.21\00:09:07.66 I would imagine it will be 00:09:08.21\00:09:09.51 still a challenge... it should be. 00:09:09.52\00:09:11.24 It's taken 20 or 30 years for me to get to where I'm at today, 00:09:12.57\00:09:16.00 I know I've got a journey to get back. 00:09:16.45\00:09:18.45 And so... the medications that 00:09:19.21\00:09:21.33 you're taking are you still taking 00:09:21.34\00:09:23.66 all these medications? 00:09:24.18\00:09:25.36 No, the nerve dampening drugs 00:09:25.60\00:09:29.72 I'm taking none, zero, when I was taking 6-8 a day. 00:09:30.42\00:09:34.00 My blood pressure medication has been reduced, 00:09:35.57\00:09:38.27 and several of my tests are definitely 00:09:38.72\00:09:41.09 moving in the big direction that I wanted, 00:09:41.10\00:09:43.51 it... even... some of them have dramatically decreased. 00:09:43.84\00:09:47.42 I actually did the calculations, 00:09:48.09\00:09:49.45 cause I just got the tests today, but 00:09:49.46\00:09:51.06 one of the areas in 00:09:51.45\00:09:53.03 triglycerides when down 77 percent 00:09:53.04\00:09:55.54 from when I started it two weeks, so 00:09:55.69\00:09:57.69 I was pretty pleased. 00:09:58.06\00:09:59.18 That's incredible. I've never heard of this. 00:11:53.57\00:11:56.60 Well I mean as Rick shared his story 00:11:56.81\00:11:59.45 his situation was really befuddling, I mean it 00:11:59.78\00:12:03.51 It perplexed the neurologist, 00:12:04.18\00:12:06.00 it perplexed the other doctors he saw. 00:12:06.18\00:12:08.15 And I'm not going to tell you he showed up 00:12:08.16\00:12:10.24 here at NEWSTART and I looked at him, and 00:12:10.63\00:12:12.63 I said-- - No don't say that! 00:12:12.72\00:12:14.39 and all of a sudden a couple of visits and he was healed! 00:12:16.06\00:12:19.06 No I know you're not going to say that. 00:12:19.12\00:12:20.75 Yeah, and I didn't-- to be 00:12:20.81\00:12:21.81 honest with you the diagnosis was 00:12:21.82\00:12:23.09 perplexing to me as well. I mean I'm 00:12:23.24\00:12:24.60 trained as an internal medicine specialist, 00:12:24.78\00:12:26.69 I also have my boards in preventive medicine. 00:12:26.70\00:12:28.69 And general internists we're trained to question things, 00:12:29.12\00:12:32.21 to analyze things, to try to 00:12:32.22\00:12:33.66 turn over every stone, so 00:12:33.87\00:12:35.51 we even looked at a number of 00:12:35.75\00:12:37.75 other conditions other possibilities. 00:12:38.06\00:12:40.30 And like Rick shared, 00:12:40.39\00:12:41.45 a couple of the things we looked at 00:12:41.46\00:12:43.18 are two vitamins that can affect nerve and 00:12:43.54\00:12:46.27 muscle function, vitamin D and vitamin B12. 00:12:46.28\00:12:49.03 I'm not going to say that was the whole problem. 00:12:49.39\00:12:52.12 - You just don't know. 00:12:52.30\00:12:53.45 Yeah, so there was a lot going on, and 00:12:53.54\00:12:55.75 the interesting thing I've found over the years Ron, 00:12:56.00\00:12:58.48 is the Lord lays our pride in the dust 00:12:59.03\00:13:01.54 even as physicians. You know as a profession 00:13:01.63\00:13:04.39 we don't have the best reputation 00:13:04.63\00:13:06.75 for being humble mild mannered folks! 00:13:06.76\00:13:09.15 - No...! - Really! 00:13:09.21\00:13:10.54 And when you're working with the Lord though 00:13:10.57\00:13:13.57 I mean he does this to you! I mean he sends 00:13:13.81\00:13:15.78 people like Rick, and I don't walk out saying, 00:13:15.81\00:13:18.24 Hey I'm the genius doctor, 00:13:18.25\00:13:19.51 you know, no one else could figure it out! 00:13:19.57\00:13:21.39 You know, I'm like the rest of them, 00:13:22.18\00:13:23.72 saying you know we've got all these pieces in the puzzle, 00:13:23.73\00:13:26.18 they don't fit completely. 00:13:26.39\00:13:27.69 And the Lord did help us find some things 00:13:28.09\00:13:30.72 that were obvious that could be treated or could be fine tuned. 00:13:30.75\00:13:34.30 But often what happens Ron, in these situations where 00:13:34.75\00:13:37.48 people have difficult problems that are perplexing physicians, 00:13:37.49\00:13:40.54 we say, Look 00:13:40.78\00:13:41.81 the Lord has given us enough wisdom 00:13:41.87\00:13:43.81 about how the body works. 00:13:44.24\00:13:45.66 We're just going to help this person 00:13:45.84\00:13:48.00 if nothing else, get on an optimum lifestyle. 00:13:48.21\00:13:51.09 And it's amazing to me, because over 00:13:51.54\00:13:53.48 the years I've seen this many times, 00:13:53.49\00:13:55.39 where I may not know exactly what the patient needs, 00:13:55.72\00:13:59.42 but by God's grace He's given us 00:13:59.72\00:14:01.66 an experience in places like Weimar 00:14:01.67\00:14:03.72 where we say, Look we know these 00:14:04.09\00:14:05.72 things from the Bible, from science. 00:14:05.73\00:14:07.57 These are healing principles whether it's the water drinking, 00:14:07.75\00:14:10.63 the exercise, the water, the diet. 00:14:10.81\00:14:12.45 We're going to help the 00:14:12.75\00:14:14.00 person get on that kind of program. 00:14:14.01\00:14:15.66 And the Lord seems to add sometimes just 00:14:16.18\00:14:17.87 really supernatural blessings to that whole process. 00:14:17.88\00:14:20.18 And I've seen that time and time again, 00:14:20.78\00:14:23.51 I think of an individual like him 00:14:23.84\00:14:25.42 and other people that I've interviewed, 00:14:25.43\00:14:27.18 Where they've been all over the country getting 00:14:27.57\00:14:31.03 tests, and this and that, 00:14:31.30\00:14:33.24 and nobody could figure anything out. 00:14:33.51\00:14:35.33 And they come here to a 00:14:35.45\00:14:37.06 little country place in the hills 00:14:37.07\00:14:39.21 in California, 00:14:39.66\00:14:40.81 and they see a physician that with the Lord's grace, 00:14:41.24\00:14:45.57 and you said it, one thing we do 00:14:46.12\00:14:48.27 have here in God is alive and well 00:14:48.28\00:14:50.45 and working on all of us. 00:14:50.66\00:14:52.18 And not just the guests that come here, I think 00:14:52.63\00:14:55.36 I see visually 00:14:55.51\00:14:57.18 from day to day how he works on the 00:14:57.57\00:15:00.39 doctors how he works on the staff, 00:15:00.40\00:15:03.06 and what a blessing. 00:15:03.63\00:15:05.03 Oh, no, and it's incredible, 00:15:05.21\00:15:06.51 and I think that's what many people throughout medical lines 00:15:06.63\00:15:10.24 are starting to realize has been missing in 00:15:10.30\00:15:12.24 the Western medical system, and this is not just 00:15:12.25\00:15:14.36 a Christian phenomena, you talk with 00:15:14.57\00:15:16.48 people who are atheist, and agnostic, 00:15:16.49\00:15:18.36 And they're talking about restoring 00:15:18.72\00:15:20.84 the human element to medical care. 00:15:20.85\00:15:22.87 They're speaking about spiritual health and whole person health, 00:15:23.12\00:15:27.12 and holism, and you hear these kind of words. 00:15:27.45\00:15:29.63 And then you go to the national institutes 00:15:29.75\00:15:31.66 of health and you start looking at their data, 00:15:31.67\00:15:33.72 and they're saying, Americans are saying, We're basically 00:15:34.24\00:15:37.30 tired with just using conventional medical approaches. 00:15:37.60\00:15:40.57 More and more people, 00:15:41.12\00:15:42.12 the vast majority of Americans today 00:15:42.13\00:15:43.66 are using what are labeled 00:15:43.81\00:15:45.24 complimentary and alternative medical approaches. 00:15:45.25\00:15:47.66 So people are saying, Look 00:15:48.12\00:15:49.39 it's not just the pills, 00:15:49.57\00:15:50.75 it's not just the high-tech diagnosis. 00:15:50.76\00:15:52.57 We're not minimizing 00:15:52.75\00:15:54.27 the fact that these things can be valuable, 00:15:54.48\00:15:56.54 but it's clearly not the whole picture. 00:15:56.69\00:15:58.60 Now I have to ask you this because 00:15:59.21\00:16:01.03 it's rare that I hear one of our guests say 00:16:01.12\00:16:04.03 that the doctor gave me a shot of B12 or D or whatever. 00:16:04.33\00:16:08.36 We don't generally, is it fair to say, 00:16:08.81\00:16:11.72 treat our guests with 00:16:12.30\00:16:14.42 nutritional supplements? 00:16:14.84\00:16:16.45 Well, the focus here at Weimar 00:16:17.21\00:16:19.60 the NEWSTART program is a lifestyle program. 00:16:19.72\00:16:22.45 So we're trying to help them get on a better lifestyle. 00:16:22.51\00:16:25.15 At the same time I have an obligation as a physician 00:16:25.60\00:16:28.24 to help my patients 00:16:28.45\00:16:29.75 make as much progress as quickly as they can. 00:16:30.06\00:16:32.36 And B12 is a great example. 00:16:32.60\00:16:34.42 If someone comes in with a very low B12 level, 00:16:34.63\00:16:37.78 or a level that's low enough to be causing symptoms, 00:16:38.18\00:16:42.09 there's no reason for us to say, Look, you can gradually 00:16:42.30\00:16:45.57 you know, improve this over months 00:16:45.84\00:16:47.78 by taking an oral supplement, 00:16:48.09\00:16:49.63 when we can give an injection, 00:16:49.81\00:16:52.00 and rapidly raise that B12 level. 00:16:52.01\00:16:54.21 So really, if something needs 00:16:54.48\00:16:57.33 I mean you're right, it's unusual, 00:16:57.45\00:16:59.27 we're not giving a lot of shots here. 00:16:59.28\00:17:01.18 But if someone can benefit 00:17:01.39\00:17:03.12 from an injection, usually-- I don't 00:17:03.30\00:17:05.27 remember exactly the dialog that I had with Rick. 00:17:05.28\00:17:07.81 But I'll often talk with the patient about it, I'm not 00:17:08.12\00:17:10.39 I don't say, you know, You stay 00:17:10.66\00:17:12.06 here we're going to give you a shot. 00:17:12.07\00:17:13.51 But I explain 00:17:13.81\00:17:15.42 what I'm thinking, and if they want the shot, 00:17:15.54\00:17:17.66 you know, we'd give them the shot. 00:17:17.75\00:17:19.03 If a person said, You know what, I hate shots, 00:17:19.04\00:17:21.09 I can't stand needles, 00:17:21.30\00:17:22.75 I just want to take oral, even if it takes 00:17:23.00\00:17:24.69 longer-- I mean I'm going to respect that. 00:17:24.70\00:17:26.42 - Right. 00:17:26.51\00:17:27.54 Now during our blood draws, 00:17:27.72\00:17:29.30 which everyone goes through, 00:17:29.36\00:17:31.12 most everyone except for maybe that 00:17:31.13\00:17:33.21 individual that says I can't stand needles. 00:17:33.60\00:17:35.69 Do we check for B12 and D deficiencies? 00:17:36.81\00:17:39.87 We do a general broad panel that looks-- 00:17:40.15\00:17:42.72 - Which includes those? 00:17:42.78\00:17:43.81 It actually does not include. The standard panel 00:17:43.82\00:17:46.51 we do does not include vitamin B12 and vitamin D. 00:17:46.52\00:17:49.18 For example if someone comes in 00:17:49.63\00:17:52.15 and I don't have any questions about their vitamin D status, 00:17:52.36\00:17:55.06 they live in a more southern 00:17:55.07\00:17:56.24 place in the United States, 00:17:56.54\00:17:58.27 that may not seem so pressing, 00:17:58.57\00:18:00.39 and we probably wouldn't measure that. 00:18:00.63\00:18:02.66 It's because of you're knowledge, 00:18:03.03\00:18:04.63 you're instinctiveness was it? 00:18:04.64\00:18:06.06 Yeah, I mean it is basically, it's a clinical judgment. 00:18:06.21\00:18:09.33 What we've tried to do Ron is 00:18:09.78\00:18:11.63 even though someone might look at the price of a program here, 00:18:12.18\00:18:14.72 they might say, Well that's you know 00:18:14.73\00:18:16.24 costs, you know it's some investment to come here, 00:18:16.63\00:18:19.18 we've tried to keep that price, 00:18:19.45\00:18:21.06 as low as possible. 00:18:21.33\00:18:22.33 And if someone really does the math, 00:18:22.36\00:18:23.72 we have business people that come all the time here, 00:18:23.73\00:18:25.72 they say, You know what, 00:18:25.87\00:18:27.06 I don't know how you're 00:18:27.30\00:18:28.60 delivering this much in the way of services 00:18:28.61\00:18:31.09 for the kind of price you're paying-- 00:18:31.21\00:18:32.75 the kind of price I'm paying as a patient. 00:18:33.15\00:18:35.72 And really we've got a group of staff 00:18:35.87\00:18:38.30 here who could be making a lot more money 00:18:38.31\00:18:40.78 in other settings. 00:18:41.00\00:18:42.09 This is not a place where people come to work to get rich. 00:18:42.12\00:18:44.39 - Right. 00:18:44.40\00:18:45.37 And so we're working to discount the 00:18:45.38\00:18:47.39 professional staff, the whole team, 00:18:47.40\00:18:49.36 and we're able then 00:18:49.69\00:18:51.42 to offer programs much more cost effective. 00:18:51.60\00:18:53.87 How this ties in with the lab work, 00:18:54.12\00:18:55.81 We try to do a fairly comprehensive 00:18:56.24\00:18:58.33 lab panel when people come in, 00:18:58.34\00:19:00.12 but that's got to be included in the price of the program. 00:19:00.27\00:19:02.75 So we don't just run every single 00:19:03.33\00:19:05.51 test in the book when we draw that blood, 00:19:05.52\00:19:08.18 but we do as physicians, when we see 00:19:08.54\00:19:12.18 individual patients we say, Look 00:19:12.33\00:19:14.15 we might-- we think you would 00:19:14.36\00:19:15.75 benefit from an extra test or something, 00:19:15.76\00:19:17.66 then that's something that can be added at that point. 00:19:18.15\00:19:20.51 - But you hit the nail right on the head here. 00:19:20.72\00:19:22.81 You hit the nail right on the head 00:19:23.36\00:19:24.81 when you said, 00:19:25.18\00:19:26.48 Let's check the B12, lets check the D 00:19:26.66\00:19:29.09 and he was low in both, 00:19:29.33\00:19:30.69 and you've given him shots now, 00:19:30.87\00:19:32.81 and maybe that's attributed to this turnaround, I don't know. 00:19:33.21\00:19:37.39 Well, I mean the Lord works through natural law, 00:19:37.48\00:19:40.87 but he also works supernaturally. 00:19:41.06\00:19:42.87 And so you know, we pray 00:19:43.15\00:19:44.66 that God would guide us, as I pray with the patients, 00:19:44.72\00:19:47.21 I'm praying that God would guide us collectively. 00:19:47.22\00:19:49.42 I typically, 00:19:49.69\00:19:50.81 you know I'm asking, If we're 00:19:50.82\00:19:52.36 missing something Lord, direct us to that. 00:19:52.37\00:19:54.42 So we look at this as a partnership. 00:19:54.63\00:19:56.78 I'm sure glad that it 00:19:56.87\00:19:58.21 doesn't all rest on my shoulders, 00:19:58.22\00:20:00.12 there's a great Physician who's active here at Weimar 00:20:00.33\00:20:02.81 and we have the privilege of cooperating with Him. 00:20:03.12\00:20:05.03 Amen. 00:20:05.21\00:20:06.45 Now what else? Rick-- 00:20:06.60\00:20:09.03 it's really exciting to see him change. 00:20:09.09\00:20:12.09 What else can you tell us that he's gone through here? 00:20:12.39\00:20:15.21 Well you know, I think one of the other 00:20:15.33\00:20:16.84 things that he mentioned 00:20:17.24\00:20:18.57 that's very powerful is the water... 00:20:18.58\00:20:20.45 hydration. 00:20:20.78\00:20:22.12 You know, a lot of people 00:20:22.39\00:20:24.12 sometimes look at these simple remedies and they say-- 00:20:24.21\00:20:26.75 In fact I'll tell you some years ago I had a patient 00:20:26.87\00:20:29.36 where I shared with him a simple remedy, 00:20:29.72\00:20:31.66 and I didn't know it at the time, 00:20:32.03\00:20:33.30 but he basically after I left the room 00:20:33.75\00:20:36.18 I mean he said you know, 00:20:36.51\00:20:37.78 What kind of a stupid thing is that? 00:20:37.79\00:20:39.63 I've got all these problems-- 00:20:39.81\00:20:41.27 - And he wants me to drink water! 00:20:41.48\00:20:42.63 - Yeah, how is this going to help me? 00:20:42.69\00:20:43.84 You know often these things look so simple 00:20:44.09\00:20:46.30 but they're powerful. 00:20:46.45\00:20:47.51 And it's really just helping us 00:20:47.75\00:20:49.63 to restore our physiology, bringing our 00:20:49.75\00:20:52.24 physiology back in harmony with natural law, 00:20:52.25\00:20:54.84 and this allows 00:20:55.30\00:20:56.72 to cooperate with God in the healing process. 00:20:56.81\00:20:59.60 Instead of praying-- I mean it's crazy Ron, 00:20:59.72\00:21:02.15 but there are millions of Christians 00:21:02.33\00:21:04.15 today who are praying for God's healing, 00:21:04.16\00:21:06.09 and then they're living in such a way 00:21:06.24\00:21:08.06 that they're undermining their health. 00:21:08.24\00:21:10.03 It doesn't make any sense! 00:21:10.15\00:21:12.12 - It doesn't make any sense at all. 00:21:12.15\00:21:13.45 Well that's about it for now, we're running out of time. 00:21:14.60\00:21:17.42 I want to thank you for coming into the studio 00:21:17.63\00:21:20.21 it's always a pleasure to chat with you. 00:21:20.48\00:21:22.24 Great to be with you Ron. 00:21:22.27\00:21:23.45 And friends thank you, but don't go 00:21:23.60\00:21:25.24 away-- we have an important message for you. 00:21:25.25\00:21:27.18 Welcome to NEWSTART AT HOME. 00:21:41.87\00:21:43.24 I'm your host today, Dr. David DeRose, 00:21:43.48\00:21:45.81 and with me registered dietician Hildelisa Flickinger. 00:21:46.06\00:21:49.63 Hildelisa it's great to have you with us today. 00:21:49.75\00:21:51.78 Thank you, glad to be here. 00:21:52.00\00:21:53.30 Hildelisa people today as we've talked about in past broadcasts 00:21:53.48\00:21:58.12 really have concerns many of them with putting on weight. 00:21:58.24\00:22:01.51 Is this as big a problem as many people think it is? 00:22:02.06\00:22:05.21 Definitely, we have an 00:22:05.51\00:22:06.81 obesity crisis in our country today 00:22:06.82\00:22:08.87 and in light of that 00:22:09.33\00:22:10.45 there's no shortage of diets is there? 00:22:10.69\00:22:13.39 No there's not, and what 00:22:13.78\00:22:15.15 we're really trying to do today is 00:22:15.16\00:22:16.81 look at something really practical that 00:22:17.30\00:22:19.30 someone could do just in a few minutes if they can 00:22:19.31\00:22:21.72 catch an idea of this 00:22:22.12\00:22:23.48 so called volumetrics concept, 00:22:23.66\00:22:26.72 we believe it can make a big difference. 00:22:27.06\00:22:29.12 What is this talk about volumetrics? 00:22:29.30\00:22:31.78 Well that is from a study from Penn State University 00:22:32.33\00:22:36.06 and it taps into a concept that I believe the 00:22:36.30\00:22:39.36 NEWSTART here at Weimar Center for Health and Education 00:22:39.37\00:22:43.06 have known for years 00:22:43.30\00:22:44.48 and that is, that if you eat foods that are 00:22:44.66\00:22:47.60 less in energy density 00:22:47.81\00:22:49.81 you'll lose weight. 00:22:50.06\00:22:51.60 Ok, so energy density 00:22:52.15\00:22:54.00 refers then to the amount of 00:22:54.45\00:22:56.30 calories in a given volume of food, is that right? 00:22:56.48\00:22:59.72 Exactly, so if you fill your plate up 00:23:00.03\00:23:02.12 with these foods you'll be eating more foods 00:23:02.13\00:23:04.51 but eating less calories. 00:23:04.69\00:23:06.36 Ok, so we don't have to say, 00:23:06.42\00:23:08.30 Push yourself away from the table, 00:23:08.39\00:23:10.57 don't eat, fast. 00:23:10.58\00:23:11.57 But we can say, Eat the right foods. 00:23:11.75\00:23:13.39 Eat foods that fill you up, 00:23:13.51\00:23:14.81 but don't give you a lot of calories. 00:23:14.82\00:23:16.60 Exactly, and what do you think those 00:23:16.75\00:23:18.84 foods that are low in energy density are? 00:23:18.85\00:23:21.24 Well, I mean the first thing that comes 00:23:21.36\00:23:23.18 to my mind Hildelisa is iceberg lettuce. 00:23:23.19\00:23:25.00 I mean that's a lot of food there, but 00:23:25.12\00:23:27.57 not many calories are there? 00:23:27.72\00:23:29.27 Definitely, so that would be 00:23:29.39\00:23:31.27 foods, plant based foods like the fruits 00:23:31.48\00:23:34.03 and the vegetables, and the whole grains. 00:23:34.04\00:23:36.48 So if you eat these foods you can 00:23:37.00\00:23:38.78 eat more foods and less calories. 00:23:38.79\00:23:40.63 Now what's more is that these plant based 00:23:41.66\00:23:44.15 foods are going to prevent chronic diseases, 00:23:44.16\00:23:46.63 and they're going to keep your weight down. 00:23:47.00\00:23:49.78 Now-- 00:23:50.66\00:23:51.75 Hildelisa, yeah one of the 00:23:51.81\00:23:53.18 questions is that, we're talking about 00:23:53.19\00:23:54.81 really getting these foods that 00:23:55.09\00:23:56.75 have fewer calories in them, but... 00:23:56.76\00:23:58.66 couldn't someone say, Well can't I eat less 00:23:59.72\00:24:02.72 of the foods with more calories? They say, 00:24:03.09\00:24:05.00 I like my hamburgers and milk shakes and French fries. 00:24:05.01\00:24:07.36 Well the principle is that 00:24:07.78\00:24:09.63 foods that are high in water content 00:24:09.64\00:24:12.15 and fiber content, those are the things that 00:24:12.33\00:24:14.48 are going to fill you up so you'll eat less. 00:24:14.49\00:24:16.60 For example fruits--they are 80 to 95 00:24:17.06\00:24:19.63 percent water, fruits and vegetables, 00:24:19.64\00:24:22.24 and hard grains are 85 percent water, 00:24:22.45\00:24:25.30 and soups they can be up to 95 percent water. 00:24:25.51\00:24:28.36 - Wow. 00:24:28.37\00:24:29.34 So they fill you up, 00:24:29.35\00:24:30.54 but they don't give you a lot of calories. 00:24:30.75\00:24:32.09 Right. Now do you suppose that if you just 00:24:32.27\00:24:35.18 drink a big glass of water with your hamburger, 00:24:35.19\00:24:38.21 would that work? 00:24:38.39\00:24:39.51 Well I'm not going to eat a 00:24:39.52\00:24:40.72 hamburger Hildelisa, don't worry! 00:24:40.73\00:24:42.15 But tell us, is that a 00:24:42.33\00:24:43.54 solution if someone wants to say, 00:24:43.55\00:24:45.36 I'll have 80 percent water and eat the burger and fries? 00:24:45.37\00:24:48.33 No that won't work. The water has 00:24:48.51\00:24:50.72 to be in the food in order to work. 00:24:50.73\00:24:53.09 - And why is that? 00:24:53.48\00:24:54.54 Well because that's how 00:24:54.84\00:24:56.36 you're going to fill up, and... yes. 00:24:56.37\00:24:58.54 Now-- and the food is going to have less calories whereas if 00:24:58.66\00:25:01.63 you eat the hamburger even 00:25:01.64\00:25:03.03 though you have the glass of water, 00:25:03.04\00:25:04.66 you're going to eat all the 00:25:05.00\00:25:06.57 calories in that hamburger for example. 00:25:06.58\00:25:08.84 Now lets just visualize what we're talking about... 00:25:09.18\00:25:11.84 I have here 00:25:12.24\00:25:13.69 a hundred calories of raisins or dried grapes, 00:25:14.12\00:25:17.09 it's about less than a quarter cup. 00:25:17.10\00:25:19.30 and a hundred calories of grapes, 00:25:19.33\00:25:21.48 it's about a little less than two cups. 00:25:21.49\00:25:24.03 Now which one would you rather eat? 00:25:24.33\00:25:26.03 Now are you telling me there are the 00:25:26.48\00:25:27.78 same number of calories in each of those? 00:25:27.79\00:25:29.24 Exactly. 00:25:29.42\00:25:30.42 Well if I'm wanting to fill up with less calories, 00:25:30.87\00:25:33.72 I'm going to choose the grapes. 00:25:33.73\00:25:35.45 Definitely, that is going to fill you up, 00:25:35.78\00:25:38.72 and give you the same amount of calories but 00:25:39.03\00:25:41.42 it's so easy to eat this amount of raisins, 00:25:41.43\00:25:43.72 whether-- whereas the grapes will definitely fill you up. 00:25:44.15\00:25:48.03 So we're not saying the raisins are not a healthy snack, 00:25:48.48\00:25:51.45 but they are a problem when it comes to giving 00:25:51.66\00:25:54.00 you lots of calories in a small amount of volume. 00:25:54.01\00:25:56.30 When you're trying to watch your weight, yes. 00:25:56.54\00:25:58.45 Now pasta, and... 00:25:58.75\00:26:01.06 bread, Italian bread, they have similar ingredients, 00:26:01.45\00:26:04.21 but if you think about it, but if you think about 00:26:04.39\00:26:06.36 it the pasta absorbs the water that it's cooked in, 00:26:06.37\00:26:08.36 so it's going to be half as energy dense as the bread. 00:26:08.69\00:26:12.42 So that's the concept that we're talking about. 00:26:12.72\00:26:14.75 The drier the food the more calories. 00:26:15.09\00:26:17.39 Hildelisa, I mean this is great information. 00:26:17.84\00:26:19.81 Hopefully you've learned some 00:26:19.82\00:26:21.18 things today that can make a difference 00:26:21.19\00:26:22.81 as far as helping you trim a few of those 00:26:23.12\00:26:24.87 additional pounds that you're trying to get rid of. 00:26:24.88\00:26:27.18 I'm Dr. David DeRose, letting you 00:26:27.42\00:26:28.78 know that if you want more information 00:26:28.79\00:26:30.39 go to our website: 00:26:30.51\00:26:31.66 Modern views of evolution stem all the way back 00:26:42.00\00:26:44.51 to theories developed in the mid-1800s. 00:26:44.54\00:26:47.03 Out of the same time period came ideas that shape 00:26:47.60\00:26:51.00 our educational system today. 00:26:51.03\00:26:53.18 The Common School Movement, for example, 00:26:53.72\00:26:56.09 saw schools more like a factory, 00:26:56.45\00:26:58.36 with students blindly memorizing instruction 00:26:58.37\00:27:01.12 rather than thinking for themselves. 00:27:01.15\00:27:03.12 Their curriculum was rigid and theoretical. 00:27:03.57\00:27:06.12 Instead of being flexible and practical, 00:27:06.13\00:27:08.87 it was designed to conform the individual 00:27:09.12\00:27:11.51 into a specific ideological mold 00:27:11.60\00:27:14.15 that fit the needs of an old industrial era 00:27:14.39\00:27:16.84 long since passed. 00:27:16.85\00:27:18.33 Just like our view of creation in six literal days, 00:27:19.60\00:27:22.84 we believe the Bible contains an educational blueprint 00:27:23.03\00:27:27.03 radically different from the one we see now. 00:27:27.30\00:27:29.66 Well friends that's it for today. 00:27:43.12\00:27:44.78 Thank you for joining us. 00:27:44.79\00:27:46.15 Now I know we have friends and family that 00:27:46.60\00:27:49.60 may need to come to the NEWSTART program. 00:27:50.15\00:27:52.03 So pick up that phone and give us a call at: 00:27:52.48\00:27:54.81 Have a great day and may God bless. 00:28:03.33\00:28:05.63
