Hi folks, and welcome to another edition of NEWSTART Now. 00:00:23.75\00:00:27.48 We have an unusual guest with us today, 00:00:27.60\00:00:30.00 Rod Kerbs, who's come to us from 00:00:30.03\00:00:32.21 Fresno, California. 00:00:32.30\00:00:34.06 And I'd like to show you a clip when he first arrived. 00:00:34.24\00:00:37.63 After two or three years of high stress 00:00:39.03\00:00:41.66 in my job as an administrator, 00:00:41.69\00:00:44.63 principal and vice-principal and teacher, 00:00:44.64\00:00:47.57 in combination with 10 years of diabetes 00:00:47.66\00:00:51.42 and a real big issue dealing with sleep apnea, 00:00:51.51\00:00:56.42 I found myself taking drugs at high capacities. 00:00:56.45\00:01:00.39 Opiates, like... 00:01:00.45\00:01:02.60 things like oxycontin and lyrica, 00:01:02.75\00:01:06.00 and different kinds of drugs used for anti-depression. 00:01:06.12\00:01:11.27 I found myself so sick that 00:01:11.57\00:01:13.42 I had to take myself off the job. 00:01:13.43\00:01:15.57 And since June of this last year, 00:01:15.60\00:01:18.72 I've been almost on my back. 00:01:18.81\00:01:21.39 Enough energy to get up to eat something, 00:01:21.57\00:01:24.45 chew a little while, and then fall down asleep, 00:01:24.46\00:01:27.12 and just barely making it from hour to hour, day to day. 00:01:27.30\00:01:32.57 I've got two little girls and a wife, 00:01:32.66\00:01:35.63 but I can't be very helpful with that, either. 00:01:35.78\00:01:38.24 The biggest thing I want to gain 00:01:38.63\00:01:40.54 is to be able to be healthy again 00:01:40.55\00:01:42.42 so I can enjoy my little girls. 00:01:42.43\00:01:44.60 and to live long enough so that I can walk them down the aisle 00:01:45.00\00:01:48.69 and see my grandkids. 00:01:48.87\00:01:51.30 That's what I'm looking for -- a new life. 00:01:51.36\00:01:55.54 Welcome back friends, and in our studio, Rod. 00:01:57.24\00:01:59.66 How are you, sir? - Great. 00:01:59.67\00:02:01.39 Good to see you. - You bet. 00:02:01.40\00:02:03.00 Well, during that first interview, 00:02:03.15\00:02:06.12 I saw a different guy. 00:02:06.27\00:02:08.03 Maybe someone a little more kicked-back, 00:02:08.04\00:02:10.06 you know, with that hat and the scarf. 00:02:10.15\00:02:12.24 You looked like this dashing young man. 00:02:12.36\00:02:15.48 Tell us what's happened. 00:02:15.60\00:02:17.45 How are the medications going? 00:02:17.69\00:02:19.75 Well, it's ben a really interesting process, 00:02:20.00\00:02:22.75 going from literally 12-13 different kinds of drugs 00:02:22.81\00:02:27.12 down to the point where I have just a little bit of 00:02:27.15\00:02:30.00 medication to keep the pain off 00:02:30.01\00:02:32.30 as my feet are continuing to heal. 00:02:32.45\00:02:34.75 I went from 100 units plus of insulin down to zero now. 00:02:34.87\00:02:40.03 So, no insulin. 00:02:40.09\00:02:41.42 - No insulin. None, whatsoever. 00:02:41.51\00:02:43.69 I had no feeling in my feet, in my legs. 00:02:44.00\00:02:47.24 Much of my leg and both feet were completely numb. 00:02:47.36\00:02:52.78 and very painful, quite honestly, in spots. 00:02:53.00\00:02:56.33 And so that's developed significantly. 00:02:56.45\00:03:01.06 I've gone from maybe, barely able to get up 00:03:01.09\00:03:04.84 to walking 6 and 8 miles a day. 00:03:05.06\00:03:07.75 - Oh my goodness, that's great! 00:03:07.81\00:03:10.09 - Congratulations. Yeah, it's pretty impressive. 00:03:10.12\00:03:12.69 - So you think you've got this thing whipped? 00:03:12.81\00:03:15.09 I know you talked about opiates, 00:03:15.12\00:03:17.33 and I had a younger brother who had been on heroin 00:03:17.34\00:03:22.09 for most his life, 00:03:22.27\00:03:24.84 and we've seen him get off heroin on several occasions, 00:03:25.06\00:03:28.75 only to go back to it. 00:03:29.03\00:03:30.78 Tell us why your situation is different. 00:03:30.84\00:03:33.54 Well, I think part of it is the kinds of materials 00:03:34.00\00:03:37.36 that I was using for pain medication. 00:03:37.39\00:03:39.12 although they're similar, prescription. 00:03:39.13\00:03:42.63 And although you can get really stuck with that stuff, 00:03:42.66\00:03:45.78 I had only taken the really heaviest 00:03:45.81\00:03:48.72 for only about 6 to 8 months. 00:03:48.84\00:03:51.24 And even with that, 00:03:51.36\00:03:53.18 I had to go through withdrawals. 00:03:53.42\00:03:54.75 The last 2 or 3 weeks, 00:03:54.76\00:03:56.30 I can tell you I went through a lot of pain and agony 00:03:56.45\00:03:59.21 to get off of those rascals. 00:03:59.30\00:04:01.27 I'm not interested in doing that again! 00:04:01.36\00:04:04.00 I saw you here and there, 00:04:04.01\00:04:06.00 and I noticed that you were kinda...working with it. 00:04:06.03\00:04:09.15 - Yes. 00:04:09.16\00:04:10.27 And I didn't want to play down the diabetes. 00:04:10.48\00:04:12.48 Let's get back to that just for a moment. 00:04:12.60\00:04:15.00 Are you saying to us now that 00:04:15.18\00:04:17.12 your diabetes is totally in check, 00:04:17.18\00:04:19.21 that you no longer are diabetic? 00:04:19.22\00:04:21.51 No, I think I'll be a diabetic all my life. 00:04:21.66\00:04:23.78 The key here is that I'm controlling it 00:04:23.81\00:04:27.00 with exercise, fresh air, water, and a vegan diet 00:04:27.01\00:04:31.39 that has literally saved my life. 00:04:31.42\00:04:33.60 So your blood sugar numbers, 00:04:33.72\00:04:35.72 where are they in the mornings now? 00:04:35.75\00:04:38.33 Well, let me get some background to this, 00:04:38.36\00:04:41.00 because it makes a lot more sense. 00:04:41.03\00:04:42.27 A1Cs, two years ago-- 14, and higher. 00:04:42.30\00:04:47.81 - Wow. 00:04:48.03\00:04:49.30 Now the standard for A1C now... 00:04:49.33\00:04:52.33 ...is what, 6.5? - About 6.5-7. 00:04:52.36\00:04:55.51 - And where are you today? 00:04:55.60\00:04:57.48 Well, before I came, 00:04:57.54\00:04:59.06 my endocrinologist helped me quite a bit 00:04:59.12\00:05:01.30 with insulin, and with lots and lots of pills, 00:05:01.39\00:05:04.54 and we had gotten it down to the point where 00:05:04.60\00:05:07.00 oh, 9.5-10, maybe. 00:05:07.06\00:05:09.81 - With the pills. With insulin, with pills. 00:05:10.06\00:05:13.03 Oh, with insulin and pills. - With everything. 00:05:13.15\00:05:14.72 So I was in pretty rough shape. 00:05:15.06\00:05:17.15 And since I've come here, 00:05:17.16\00:05:19.60 within the first two or three days, 00:05:19.69\00:05:21.48 we went from 100 units of insulin to 50, per day. 00:05:21.49\00:05:25.30 And within a week, I was down to literally taking no insulin. 00:05:25.33\00:05:29.33 Although my blood sugars have been up around 190, 180, 00:05:29.54\00:05:34.42 that's two hours after eating a meal. 00:05:34.63\00:05:36.30 So it's not totally crazy, 00:05:36.48\00:05:39.24 but a little higher than what I care to have them. 00:05:39.33\00:05:42.45 But they're now down sitting around 160, 150. 00:05:42.66\00:05:46.36 And occasionally, I have the joy of seeing 110 and 120. 00:05:46.51\00:05:52.81 But in the first few days though, 00:05:53.42\00:05:55.78 I had a few really rough calls. 00:05:56.00\00:05:57.78 Thank goodness for good doctors and nurses here. 00:05:58.03\00:06:00.33 I had some low blood sugars as low as 38-41. 00:06:00.42\00:06:05.78 And I will tell you, the drug withdrawal-- 00:06:05.79\00:06:08.45 nothing, compared to that. 00:06:08.46\00:06:10.09 That wasn't fun. But, it's under control now, 00:06:10.15\00:06:14.15 and I just feel like I have a new lease on life. 00:06:14.21\00:06:16.63 Okay, so you've got this under control. 00:06:16.87\00:06:19.72 I, too, am what you might call diabetic. 00:06:20.06\00:06:22.87 But when I lowered my blood sugar numbers to 80s and 90s, 00:06:23.06\00:06:28.33 the doctor said, "Well, for all intents and purposes, 00:06:28.34\00:06:31.00 you're no longer diabetic." 00:06:31.12\00:06:32.51 I said, "I'll buy that." So I'm no longer diabetic, 00:06:32.52\00:06:35.54 although susceptible, perhaps, 00:06:35.63\00:06:38.39 being if I don't watch the lifestyle I'm leading. 00:06:38.40\00:06:44.15 What about now, getting back to the pain medications... 00:06:44.24\00:06:47.78 Before that, were there any other medications 00:06:48.09\00:06:51.15 that you were taking? 00:06:51.16\00:06:52.24 Well, it's hard to even start this thing, because 00:06:52.33\00:06:56.27 between sleep apnea and dealing with 00:06:56.36\00:06:59.57 pain in my legs and feet 00:06:59.72\00:07:02.15 and dealing with depression, heavy depression, 00:07:02.24\00:07:04.84 between the pain and stress at work 00:07:05.06\00:07:08.15 and not getting enough sleep with sleep apnea, 00:07:08.18\00:07:12.03 I was doing... What did they say? 00:07:12.04\00:07:15.33 40 to 50 times every hour at night 00:07:15.34\00:07:19.48 my sleep was interrupted with my airways stopping. 00:07:19.66\00:07:25.00 Like, my breath would stop. I would stop breathing. 00:07:25.15\00:07:28.18 40 to 50 times an hour. 00:07:28.30\00:07:31.63 And according to the study that we did 00:07:31.69\00:07:34.27 just a matter of weeks ago, 00:07:34.28\00:07:36.63 I was not ever getting any level 3 and level 4 REM sleep, 00:07:36.69\00:07:42.03 which simply means, I was not getting sleep. 00:07:42.06\00:07:44.69 I was actually semi-conscious 00:07:44.84\00:07:47.33 in level 1 and level 2. 00:07:47.39\00:07:49.42 I thought I actually maybe slept some, 00:07:49.60\00:07:52.60 and maybe even dreamt some. 00:07:52.69\00:07:55.18 But I figured it out, and the doctors figured it out, 00:07:55.19\00:07:57.45 I wasn't doing any of that. I wasn't sleeping. 00:07:57.46\00:08:00.33 So I was so exhausted to the point that 00:08:00.63\00:08:03.15 I couldn't even sleep! 00:08:03.16\00:08:05.09 I was afraid to go to sleep at night. 00:08:05.36\00:08:06.87 So then I started taking Xanax. 00:08:07.18\00:08:09.60 I started taking other medications 00:08:10.00\00:08:11.81 to go with that, to go to sleep. 00:08:11.82\00:08:13.57 So I'd go to sleep with Xanax and whatever necessary, 00:08:13.81\00:08:17.72 and in the morning, out came the coffee and the Coke 00:08:17.73\00:08:20.66 so I could wake up and get to school, and function. 00:08:20.78\00:08:25.06 And that really wore my body to a frazzle. 00:08:25.15\00:08:27.87 There just wasn't much left. 00:08:27.88\00:08:29.75 And so, where do you go from here? 00:08:29.81\00:08:32.57 Is this a lifestyle that you've chosen, 00:08:32.66\00:08:37.45 that you're going to stick with for the duration? 00:08:37.46\00:08:40.27 My family has agreed that this is the way we're going, 00:08:40.39\00:08:43.75 and I'm the main cook at home, so.... 00:08:43.78\00:08:45.78 And my wife of course does a lot of help too, 00:08:45.81\00:08:48.63 and cooks some, as well. 00:08:48.64\00:08:50.45 In fact, she's now become a cooking partner 00:08:50.63\00:08:52.66 with vegan stuff, so this is all new to us. 00:08:52.75\00:08:55.36 We're vegetarians to the most part, 00:08:55.48\00:08:58.06 but never vegan to this point. 00:08:58.27\00:09:01.51 We had plenty of oil going in all our food, 00:09:01.63\00:09:04.69 and plenty of sugar on the other side. 00:09:04.87\00:09:06.60 And so this is a totally different lifestyle. 00:09:06.81\00:09:10.18 My kids are excited about trying the new 00:09:10.19\00:09:13.03 tastes and look of food, 00:09:13.09\00:09:15.24 and my wife is excited about seeing me well 00:09:15.30\00:09:17.81 and being able to be helpful in the home. 00:09:17.84\00:09:20.42 And I enjoy wrestling with my kids now, 00:09:20.69\00:09:23.63 which for a long time I couldn't do. 00:09:23.64\00:09:25.81 Rod, we have about a minute left. 00:09:26.03\00:09:28.21 Can you tell our viewers in the next 30 seconds 00:09:28.22\00:09:33.12 pretty much what they could do or what they might do 00:09:33.33\00:09:36.57 if they have a similar situation as yours? 00:09:36.69\00:09:39.54 Well, to me, the only thing to do is to get help 00:09:39.78\00:09:43.15 that can bring you to the point of becoming well, 00:09:43.16\00:09:49.21 following God's prescripts. 00:09:49.45\00:09:52.21 He's got a recipe for us. 00:09:52.27\00:09:54.15 And the problem is, we've tainted that recipe 00:09:54.18\00:09:57.57 with a little bit too much sugar, 00:09:57.60\00:09:59.30 a little too much oil. 00:09:59.42\00:10:01.30 We've forgotten what it is to exercise. 00:10:01.36\00:10:03.66 We've forgot what it is to have manual labor and work. 00:10:03.84\00:10:06.45 We don't know what fresh air is. 00:10:06.81\00:10:08.48 We don't know how to get good sleep. 00:10:08.60\00:10:10.81 And place here like Weimar is the best place to come 00:10:10.87\00:10:14.57 to see your life changed. 00:10:14.72\00:10:16.66 - Rod, we're running out of time. 00:10:16.81\00:10:18.21 I want to thank you for joining us on the set. 00:10:18.22\00:10:20.15 Friends, don't go away, because 00:10:23.42\00:10:25.18 in a moment we'll have Doctor Lukens with us. 00:10:25.19\00:10:27.81 Well, you've done very well. 00:10:29.09\00:10:30.72 Do you have diabetes, 00:10:37.15\00:10:38.42 heart disease, high blood pressure, 00:10:38.43\00:10:40.51 or do you weigh too much? 00:10:41.06\00:10:42.36 Hi, my name is Dr. Ing, and I'd like to tell you 00:10:43.24\00:10:46.03 about our 18-day NEWSTART lifestyle program. 00:10:46.04\00:10:49.00 It includes a comprehensive medical evaluation 00:10:49.63\00:10:52.36 with laboratory studies and an exercise stress test, 00:10:52.37\00:10:55.66 physician consultations, 00:10:56.21\00:10:57.84 culinary school, 00:10:58.57\00:10:59.75 and an opportunity to walk on beautiful trails 00:11:00.30\00:11:03.24 in the foothills of the Sierras. 00:11:03.25\00:11:05.24 Your health is one of the most 00:11:07.30\00:11:08.72 important things that you have. 00:11:42.25\00:11:45.63 like we have right now with Rod Kerbs, who's... 00:11:45.69\00:11:48.54 This was his second tour of duty here at NEWSTART! 00:11:48.69\00:11:52.60 One after another, two months in a row, right? 00:11:52.66\00:11:55.51 Well you know, the reason why he came is because 00:11:55.52\00:11:58.45 of so much pain in his feet. 00:11:58.46\00:12:00.39 And he was on just really way, way too much oxycontin, 00:12:00.48\00:12:04.60 and that's got a lot of street value, and it's... 00:12:05.24\00:12:07.42 But why did he have so much pain? 00:12:07.43\00:12:08.84 He looked like a pretty lean guy. 00:12:09.03\00:12:11.24 Why...what was the pain from? 00:12:11.33\00:12:14.09 Well, when a person has diabetes, they get... 00:12:14.27\00:12:17.51 The micro- circulation in their body 00:12:17.60\00:12:21.06 starts getting compromised. 00:12:21.24\00:12:24.42 And so when you have tissues that are not well-oxygenated, 00:12:24.57\00:12:29.21 they start getting sick, 00:12:29.22\00:12:31.15 and when they do that then they start getting painful. 00:12:31.21\00:12:33.51 That's why people lose their toes, 00:12:34.24\00:12:36.12 and they lose their feet, and so-forth. 00:12:36.13\00:12:38.18 because that circulation is so compromised. 00:12:38.36\00:12:41.45 But he was having enough pain so that 00:12:41.48\00:12:43.87 he was on all this oxycontin. 00:12:43.88\00:12:46.27 And nowadays, what they do, 00:12:46.60\00:12:49.24 because they don't really know of anything for it, 00:12:49.33\00:12:51.78 they will just give you more and more and more. 00:12:52.15\00:12:55.60 We see people that are on methadone, synthetic heroin, 00:12:56.00\00:13:00.54 and all these kind of things, and it just... 00:13:00.66\00:13:02.51 After a while you realize, you know, 00:13:02.72\00:13:04.36 "I don't feel like myself anymore." 00:13:04.54\00:13:06.60 And so that's the reason why he came. 00:13:06.72\00:13:08.39 He wanted to get off of these things. 00:13:08.48\00:13:10.24 And what happens when you-- 00:13:10.57\00:13:12.42 and I say this all the time-- 00:13:12.43\00:13:13.87 when you eat these plant-based foods, 00:13:14.09\00:13:17.54 you get a substance called a prostaglandin. 00:13:17.55\00:13:20.54 And that dilates those tiny little blood vessels. 00:13:20.66\00:13:23.54 The flow goes in there, 00:13:23.66\00:13:25.75 and these cells that are oxygen-starved, 00:13:25.84\00:13:30.18 the sheath on the nerves, the myelin sheath, 00:13:30.21\00:13:34.15 those start getting healthy again. 00:13:34.27\00:13:35.81 We've done studies with this before. 00:13:36.06\00:13:38.00 so I kinda knew what we could expect in a lot of cases. 00:13:38.09\00:13:42.39 And he started getting better, 00:13:42.54\00:13:45.21 and he was really interested in that. 00:13:45.22\00:13:47.09 Of course, that's why he came. 00:13:47.10\00:13:49.03 He was happy about it. 00:13:49.04\00:13:50.63 But he was still on quite a bit. 00:13:50.69\00:13:52.33 He was also on something that's another one, 00:13:52.42\00:13:56.78 gabapentin, it's quite a complex medication. 00:13:56.87\00:14:00.57 It works on various different levels. 00:14:00.58\00:14:02.51 But he was on the newer form of it, 00:14:02.69\00:14:05.27 and he wanted to get off of those. 00:14:05.42\00:14:07.66 And to show you what kind of a medication he was on, 00:14:07.72\00:14:11.18 he has to keep track of all the tablets, 00:14:11.27\00:14:14.42 he has to call the pharmacy when it's time, 00:14:14.48\00:14:17.30 when it's almost time to get the next batch, 00:14:17.33\00:14:19.27 he has to go in personally, and... 00:14:19.39\00:14:21.09 So they really try to control this substance. 00:14:21.12\00:14:23.75 So there's certain restrictions because it's 00:14:24.03\00:14:26.69 like a morphine or that type of medication. 00:14:26.78\00:14:30.72 Well back East, the pharmacies will put up a sign 00:14:30.84\00:14:34.45 "No oxycontin sold here," 00:14:34.75\00:14:38.18 because people were going in and holding them up. 00:14:38.21\00:14:40.69 And they were shooting it in the veins and stuff like that. 00:14:40.70\00:14:44.06 So anyway, besides that, 00:14:44.15\00:14:46.03 it was really a wonderful thing 00:14:46.21\00:14:49.27 for him to be able to get off of some of this medication. 00:14:49.48\00:14:53.42 So he went back... 00:14:53.43\00:14:54.72 Some of the pain was gone, so he went back, 00:14:54.78\00:14:57.81 and we lowered his dose, and he wanted to lower it again. 00:14:58.03\00:15:01.18 And so that's why he came the second time around. 00:15:01.33\00:15:03.75 You say he got off of some of the medication. 00:15:04.03\00:15:06.51 So he was still on medication when 00:15:06.57\00:15:08.39 he left here just a few days ago. 00:15:08.40\00:15:10.12 Yep, he had some, but he had reduced it more than half. 00:15:10.13\00:15:13.78 He was really excited about that. 00:15:14.12\00:15:15.75 And then just the other day, 00:15:15.78\00:15:17.27 he wanted another prescription to be called in 00:15:17.28\00:15:19.54 so that he could reduce it even more. 00:15:19.69\00:15:21.54 So then the next batch will be a smaller amount. 00:15:21.60\00:15:24.57 And you see, he has a couple of young daughters, 00:15:24.60\00:15:28.72 and his wife, 00:15:28.75\00:15:31.15 and he's a very musical, very talented person. 00:15:31.18\00:15:34.00 He's done a lot with kids and everything. 00:15:34.12\00:15:36.09 And here he is, 53 years of age, 00:15:36.12\00:15:38.72 and they offered him retirement because they just... 00:15:38.81\00:15:41.45 Conventional medical science tells us 00:15:41.84\00:15:44.18 you really can't get over these things. 00:15:44.36\00:15:46.45 Once you've got them, you just keep deteriorating. 00:15:46.46\00:15:49.24 And he was getting over them, 00:15:49.30\00:15:50.75 and that's a wonderful, wonderful thing. 00:15:50.78\00:15:53.87 You can imagine, at 53 years of age, to be 00:15:54.03\00:15:56.78 on disability until you go into retirement, 00:15:56.84\00:15:59.87 and here you have your daughters saying, 00:16:00.18\00:16:01.57 "Daddy's always home, 00:16:01.58\00:16:03.03 and he can't do anything and he's got pain." 00:16:03.15\00:16:05.42 So it was just a really trying case for the whole family. 00:16:05.60\00:16:10.03 Okay. Here's the magic question. 00:16:10.06\00:16:11.54 And I know I've asked you this a lot of times. 00:16:11.66\00:16:14.87 How is this program going to change all that? 00:16:15.21\00:16:18.57 I mean, you're telling me the guy basically... 00:16:18.72\00:16:21.57 And he has said to me, "Look, I'm strung out on these drugs. 00:16:21.63\00:16:26.48 I don't know what to do." 00:16:26.63\00:16:28.51 But you're saying here on our NEWSTART program 00:16:28.57\00:16:31.78 that we can wean him off these medications, 00:16:32.06\00:16:34.78 bring him back to a healthy and whole life. 00:16:34.87\00:16:37.57 How is this possible? Is it...? 00:16:37.81\00:16:39.69 - What's going on, Doc? 00:16:40.09\00:16:41.69 Well not only that. We were able to 00:16:41.87\00:16:43.30 get him off of his insulin. 00:16:43.33\00:16:45.06 So he kept cutting back on that, 00:16:45.21\00:16:49.00 and what happened is he was losing weight, 00:16:49.15\00:16:51.51 as we expected him to do. 00:16:51.75\00:16:53.18 He was really doing well on his exercise, 00:16:53.27\00:16:55.87 and exercise also helps you to bear pain. 00:16:56.09\00:16:58.81 The more exercise you get the better you feel. 00:16:59.06\00:17:02.63 All those endorphins and stuff are moving around, 00:17:02.78\00:17:06.33 and so that was helping him, too. 00:17:06.57\00:17:08.48 So as he lost weight, 00:17:08.63\00:17:10.24 the cells were willing to accept more of the sugar 00:17:10.30\00:17:14.39 as he lost weight and got off of more of the insulin. 00:17:14.45\00:17:19.30 The... 00:17:19.36\00:17:21.00 So is he totally off insulin? 00:17:21.09\00:17:23.42 Yep, and his numbers were coming down 00:17:23.72\00:17:26.09 practically into the normal range. 00:17:26.15\00:17:28.18 And the latest thing now is that they find that if we 00:17:28.30\00:17:31.57 shove these numbers down 00:17:31.58\00:17:33.27 and we keep getting them lower and lower, 00:17:33.28\00:17:35.24 that we have more cardiac deaths. 00:17:35.36\00:17:37.24 And this is kind of a... 00:17:37.33\00:17:38.36 I just got last month in my Family Practice News, 00:17:38.51\00:17:42.18 I got the numbers, and they keep moving it up. 00:17:42.24\00:17:46.66 So they allow your hemoglobin A1Cs to be 00:17:46.75\00:17:50.57 higher and higher now as they see that 00:17:50.60\00:17:53.27 the more of the medications that you take 00:17:53.36\00:17:56.03 the more likely you are to get a heart attack. 00:17:56.12\00:17:58.36 In fact, 1 out of 5, they stopped once... 00:17:58.57\00:18:00.81 One study that they were doing, they were checking cholesterol, 00:18:01.09\00:18:05.21 they were checking the blood pressure, 00:18:05.22\00:18:08.69 and they were checking the sugar levels, the A1Cs. 00:18:08.75\00:18:12.36 And they gave up on the sugar levels because 00:18:12.60\00:18:14.81 when they drove them down with the extra medications, 00:18:14.87\00:18:17.51 they found out that 1 out of 5 was getting a heart attack 00:18:17.54\00:18:22.60 or having a coronary event, so.... 00:18:22.69\00:18:25.66 It's really something. 00:18:26.06\00:18:27.72 Why I'm so excited about this case is because he's young, 00:18:27.84\00:18:31.03 he has a young family, 00:18:31.24\00:18:33.69 and now probably he'll be going back to work, 00:18:34.03\00:18:37.36 and he's looking forward to that. 00:18:37.45\00:18:39.33 It's just like his life was given back again, 00:18:39.63\00:18:43.75 and you know, the Lord is so good. 00:18:43.78\00:18:45.45 We do these simple things, 00:18:45.69\00:18:47.27 and people say, "Well, how can just a plant-based diet... 00:18:47.28\00:18:51.39 You go out and you exercise and all that stuff. 00:18:51.75\00:18:54.30 How can this stuff work so that 00:18:54.36\00:18:56.21 these people get their life back?" 00:18:56.36\00:18:58.36 And I say, "Praise the Lord. 00:18:58.37\00:18:59.75 He's the Healer." 00:18:59.81\00:19:01.24 Let's do this. Let's review once again 00:19:01.42\00:19:03.75 for our viewers what the acronym NEWSTART represents. 00:19:03.81\00:19:07.75 We know that N is for nutrition. 00:19:07.81\00:19:11.09 And that's the whole plant foods eaten whole. 00:19:11.39\00:19:14.84 No extra oil, which just adds more fat 00:19:15.03\00:19:18.78 and more calories to the diabetic. 00:19:19.03\00:19:21.09 But they can have fat in the form of whole food. 00:19:21.10\00:19:22.78 In the form of avocados and olives and nuts. 00:19:22.81\00:19:25.78 We find that nuts are very heart-healthy. 00:19:26.03\00:19:28.21 It's recommended that a person takes 00:19:28.30\00:19:31.27 either very lightly toasted or raw nuts. 00:19:31.30\00:19:34.00 They can have a half a cup a day. 00:19:34.01\00:19:35.57 And E is for exercise, 00:19:35.78\00:19:38.03 and what we mean by exercise is just walking, right? 00:19:38.09\00:19:40.87 At any pace. 00:19:40.88\00:19:42.39 It's been shown that if you 00:19:42.40\00:19:45.15 just walk in a lot of different increments 00:19:45.16\00:19:48.21 and you're going along, even at a snail's pace... 00:19:48.33\00:19:51.66 Dr. Jeremiah Stamler said, "The distance is important 00:19:51.78\00:19:55.39 even if you have to crawl." 00:19:55.57\00:19:57.24 - Yes. çlaughterÑ 00:19:57.33\00:19:59.12 Not many can crawl fast. 00:19:59.36\00:20:01.06 And the W is for water. 00:20:01.39\00:20:03.06 Make sure you're drinking enough water. 00:20:03.15\00:20:04.75 And when I came through the program I was told, 00:20:05.15\00:20:07.72 and I don't know if this is still the same, but 00:20:07.73\00:20:09.72 for every 15 pounds, drink 8 ounces of water. 00:20:09.78\00:20:13.48 Is that pretty standard? 00:20:13.51\00:20:14.81 Yeah -- 25 extra pounds, another 8-ounce glass. 00:20:14.82\00:20:18.87 It helps you so that you feel more, you know, 00:20:19.00\00:20:22.69 have a better sense of well-being. 00:20:23.09\00:20:25.03 And sometimes people eat when they actually are thirsty, 00:20:25.04\00:20:29.54 and they think that it's a hunger pain. 00:20:29.69\00:20:31.54 And S -- sunshine. 00:20:31.66\00:20:33.78 We should get what? An hour of sunshine a day? 00:20:33.87\00:20:37.36 Well, less than that, but 00:20:37.60\00:20:40.21 you know, in fact right now 00:20:40.30\00:20:42.45 I'm going to be talking about sunlight and cancer, 00:20:42.51\00:20:45.54 and probably it's not as closely tied to the sunlight as it is to 00:20:45.60\00:20:50.45 Okay, we're running out of time here, so I want to finish. 00:20:53.39\00:20:55.81 And T for temperance, 00:20:56.24\00:20:58.36 - Air. Okay, A for air, 00:20:58.54\00:21:01.03 - Rest. And then R for rest, 00:21:01.04\00:21:03.84 And T, my favorite, is trust in the divine power. 00:21:04.03\00:21:08.00 And that's it, right? - Mhmm. 00:21:08.63\00:21:10.81 And if people do those things they're going to get healthy. 00:21:10.82\00:21:13.09 That's wonderful. - Yes. 00:21:13.15\00:21:15.00 Dr. Lukens, I want to thank you for joining us in the studio. 00:21:15.21\00:21:18.57 - It's my pleasure. It's always a pleasure. 00:21:18.69\00:21:20.84 It's always a pleasure. - Thank you very much. 00:21:21.12\00:21:22.60 And friends, thank you for joining us. 00:21:22.87\00:21:25.54 Don't go away. 00:21:25.81\00:21:27.06 We have an important message for you 00:21:27.21\00:21:29.24 right after this break. 00:21:29.39\00:21:30.84 Hello, and welcome to NEWSTART at Home. 00:21:44.78\00:21:46.33 I'm your host, Don Mackintosh. 00:21:46.39\00:21:47.63 We're glad you're with us today, and 00:21:47.64\00:21:49.18 I'm glad that Rich Kollumberg is in the studio with us. 00:21:49.19\00:21:51.18 Welcome, Rich. - Hi Don. 00:21:51.27\00:21:52.84 Now you're here... What are you here to talk about? 00:21:53.03\00:21:55.09 I'm here to talk about addictions. 00:21:55.33\00:21:56.81 And you have some experience. 00:21:57.06\00:21:58.63 I have a little experience. I was an addict 00:21:58.69\00:22:02.24 for about 25 years of my life. 00:22:02.25\00:22:04.30 I used and abused just about every kind of 00:22:04.33\00:22:06.60 drug or substance that there was. 00:22:06.66\00:22:08.33 Okay. Well, you know, 00:22:08.51\00:22:10.33 all things work together for good, 00:22:10.42\00:22:11.75 in other words, the Lord can use that. 00:22:11.76\00:22:12.87 I'm glad you're willing to come and talk about it. 00:22:12.88\00:22:14.72 And I'm glad you're still alive, 00:22:14.78\00:22:16.18 because a lot of people that get into addictions, 00:22:16.19\00:22:18.18 you know, they don't make it. 00:22:18.27\00:22:19.45 So I'm glad you're here. 00:22:19.57\00:22:20.75 What is an addiction? 00:22:20.81\00:22:22.48 And addiction is a habit that controls you. 00:22:22.51\00:22:26.81 That you don't control, but it controls you. 00:22:27.18\00:22:29.45 Now when we were talking, you said 00:22:29.54\00:22:31.33 there's two different types of addictions. 00:22:31.34\00:22:33.15 Yeah, there's two different types. 00:22:33.39\00:22:34.63 There's substance addiction, which would be 00:22:34.64\00:22:37.18 drugs, alcohol, coffee, cigarettes. 00:22:37.30\00:22:41.54 And then there's behavioral addictions. 00:22:41.57\00:22:43.30 And behavioral addictions would fall... 00:22:43.45\00:22:45.21 You would have jealousy, anger, sexual addictions, 00:22:45.24\00:22:49.03 gambling, and whatnot. 00:22:49.06\00:22:51.12 Critical-type spirit, gossiping, all those... 00:22:51.36\00:22:54.21 Yes, all those type of things are behavioral addictions. 00:22:54.24\00:22:56.81 So behavioral addictions and substance addictions, 00:22:56.87\00:23:00.84 and you struggled with both of those. 00:23:00.85\00:23:02.33 Very much so. 00:23:02.42\00:23:03.72 - The probably go together. They go hand in hand. 00:23:03.75\00:23:05.66 And so, how does that happen? 00:23:06.00\00:23:07.57 A habit to me, as I would think, sounds like a good thing. 00:23:07.66\00:23:10.78 Yeah, habits are our friends, 00:23:11.21\00:23:12.78 but when they turn bad they become addictions. 00:23:12.79\00:23:15.33 What we end up doing is 00:23:15.54\00:23:17.51 we end up following and wanting pleasure 00:23:17.52\00:23:20.27 more than thinking long-term. 00:23:20.36\00:23:22.12 And when we desire that pleasure, 00:23:22.15\00:23:24.00 that can turn into an addiction, 00:23:24.15\00:23:26.78 and we don't think long-term anymore, 00:23:26.79\00:23:29.51 and we end up giving ourselves over to that pleasure, 00:23:29.57\00:23:33.00 whatever it may be. 00:23:33.12\00:23:34.12 Whatever satisfaction we get out of gossip, 00:23:34.13\00:23:36.48 whatever satisfaction we get out of a drug, 00:23:36.54\00:23:39.06 or whatever, we give ourselves over to that. 00:23:39.12\00:23:41.15 In fact, the Bible speaks of that exact same phrase 00:23:41.16\00:23:44.48 when it talks about the behavioral 00:23:44.49\00:23:46.30 addictions of Sodom and Gomorrah. 00:23:46.31\00:23:48.09 In Jude 1:7 it says, 00:23:48.10\00:23:49.69 "Even as Sodom and Gomorrha, 00:23:49.70\00:23:51.48 and the cities about them in like manner, 00:23:51.49\00:23:53.54 giving themselves over to fornication, 00:23:53.69\00:23:56.81 and going after strange flesh, 00:23:56.82\00:23:58.45 are set forth as an example, 00:23:58.51\00:24:01.00 suffering the vengeance of eternal fire." 00:24:01.01\00:24:02.81 So we can see the Bible actually talks about 00:24:02.82\00:24:05.18 how they, in Sodom and Gomorrah, 00:24:05.30\00:24:07.24 gave themselves over to this bad behavior. 00:24:07.25\00:24:09.63 Is it a one-way street, 00:24:09.78\00:24:11.09 so you give yourself over, that's it? 00:24:11.10\00:24:13.00 That's not it, praise the Lord for that. 00:24:13.15\00:24:16.03 I can remember back... 00:24:16.21\00:24:18.15 I think I'd used about everybody up on the planet. 00:24:18.16\00:24:20.63 I was all alone. 00:24:20.66\00:24:22.00 It was back in 1996, and I was all done. 00:24:22.01\00:24:26.06 And my girlfriend wouldn't even see me anymore. 00:24:26.09\00:24:29.12 And I can remember lying face down on my bed, 00:24:29.13\00:24:32.48 crying out to God, "God help me." 00:24:32.49\00:24:34.48 And He said, you know, 00:24:34.49\00:24:35.48 "Forty-one years, your way hasn't worked." 00:24:35.49\00:24:38.09 And so He said, "It's time to try it my way." 00:24:38.18\00:24:41.09 And so I cried out to Him, 00:24:41.24\00:24:44.60 and He said that this is going to work. 00:24:44.61\00:24:47.51 And I didn't know how it was going to work. 00:24:47.52\00:24:49.06 So it was like a 3-word prayer, huh? 00:24:49.09\00:24:50.75 Yeah -- "God help me." 00:24:50.76\00:24:52.09 For three months I prayed that 3-word prayer, 00:24:52.12\00:24:54.42 "God help me," and He answered that prayer. 00:24:54.48\00:24:56.87 So that was really your way of 00:24:57.15\00:24:58.42 giving yourself over to something else. 00:24:58.43\00:25:01.06 Exactly. We can't muster up enough 00:25:01.12\00:25:03.18 ego motivation to make it work. 00:25:03.27\00:25:05.87 We have to give ourselves over to something or someone else. 00:25:06.00\00:25:09.24 You know, I like your little book that you've written here, 00:25:09.54\00:25:11.60 "Clean 7 Steps to Freedom: What Every Addict Needs." 00:25:11.66\00:25:16.21 It's got a picture there of that, 00:25:16.30\00:25:18.00 you know, the ladder going up. 00:25:18.01\00:25:19.42 Out of the way you are you gave yourself over to something, 00:25:19.45\00:25:22.12 kinda like the prodigal son. 00:25:22.30\00:25:24.00 "This is what I want. I want my inheritance, 00:25:24.09\00:25:27.21 I want this, I want that." 00:25:27.22\00:25:28.84 And then he changed. 00:25:28.85\00:25:30.60 He says, "Make me one of your servants." 00:25:30.66\00:25:32.15 You kinda had that moment. 00:25:32.16\00:25:33.39 That's right, that's right. 00:25:33.40\00:25:35.48 And it worked out, God put it in my heart 00:25:35.49\00:25:38.39 that I was going to turn 180 degrees, 00:25:38.48\00:25:40.42 and I didn't know. That was my nickname for a while. 00:25:40.45\00:25:42.54 My family called me 180 for a while, 00:25:42.66\00:25:45.24 because everything changes. 00:25:45.27\00:25:46.87 Everything I'd done in my life up to that point was wrong. 00:25:46.88\00:25:49.66 So that's the big first step. 00:25:50.33\00:25:51.84 I mean, if you were talking to someone about a first step, 00:25:51.87\00:25:54.09 it is coming to that point 00:25:54.10\00:25:55.72 of saying, "I gave myself over to this, but 00:25:56.00\00:25:58.75 I can give myself over to something else." 00:25:58.78\00:26:00.75 Yeah, admitting. 00:26:00.78\00:26:02.09 Acknowledging and admitting that you've got a problem. 00:26:02.12\00:26:04.75 Well, I encourage you... 00:26:04.84\00:26:06.84 You've been watching today NEWSTART at Home. 00:26:06.85\00:26:09.75 Get this book.
