Now let's elaborate 00:14:08.57\00:14:10.51 a little bit on that, Doc. 00:14:10.52\00:14:12.12 You and I understand that, 00:14:12.36\00:14:13.87 but I'd like our viewers to really understand 00:14:13.88\00:14:16.54 what you mean by whole plant foods eaten whole. 00:14:17.00\00:14:21.33 That--really what I hear you saying is that 00:14:21.78\00:14:24.42 we'll take let's say 00:14:24.66\00:14:26.87 what, zucchini and eat it without 00:14:27.18\00:14:29.30 shredding the skin? 00:14:29.60\00:14:30.63 Or tell us what you mean by that. 00:14:30.64\00:14:32.33 Well to take the whole plant 00:14:32.48\00:14:34.69 and make sure--well first of all 00:14:35.39\00:14:37.15 is this from a plant? 00:14:37.27\00:14:38.48 You know, we're told you're supposed 00:14:38.54\00:14:40.72 to have three servings of milk a day. 00:14:40.73\00:14:42.84 Well we don't have time to 00:14:43.57\00:14:45.06 talk about what that does to you. 00:14:45.07\00:14:46.72 But--so... 00:14:47.39\00:14:49.48 Make sure that it comes from a plant... 00:14:49.57\00:14:51.63 - So milk is not from a plant obviously. 00:14:51.87\00:14:54.51 - Not usually. - Unless-- 00:14:54.84\00:14:56.33 Unless it's soy milk! 00:14:56.36\00:14:57.81 - There we go again! 00:14:58.27\00:14:59.27 - Or one of the other milks out there, but-- 00:14:59.30\00:15:01.12 - But anyway so you're eating the whole plant, 00:15:01.24\00:15:03.72 and you want to eat it whole. 00:15:04.69\00:15:06.30 And this is very important because so often 00:15:06.31\00:15:08.54 we will take oil from another plant, 00:15:09.03\00:15:12.03 and add it to our food. 00:15:12.09\00:15:13.30 And it's absorbed differently 00:15:13.36\00:15:14.39 than when it was still in the fiber-- 00:15:14.40\00:15:15.66 -Well olive oil... Let's talk about olive oil 00:15:15.69\00:15:17.75 that's supposed to be really good for you. 00:15:17.84\00:15:19.42 I was raised in an Italian home. We have to have 00:15:19.63\00:15:22.12 olive oil in everything it made us healthy. 00:15:22.27\00:15:24.39 Well you see, Americans are eating 00:15:24.54\00:15:26.33 plus or minus 40 percent of their 00:15:26.42\00:15:28.57 calories from fat, way too much. 00:15:28.58\00:15:30.63 And so to add the olive oil to that, 00:15:31.06\00:15:34.75 if you read far enough you'll find that 00:15:35.30\00:15:38.33 that's not the way to go. 00:15:38.54\00:15:39.78 Well can we eat the olives instead? 00:15:40.03\00:15:42.33 There we go. Whole plant 00:15:42.54\00:15:44.09 food--and olive, yes-- eat it whole 00:15:44.10\00:15:46.21 and it's one fifth the calories. 00:15:46.36\00:15:47.42 Well what's the difference? 00:15:47.43\00:15:48.57 I eat the olive, I'm getting the oil from it? 00:15:48.58\00:15:50.18 Because the oil is absorbed and goes right into your cells. 00:15:50.48\00:15:53.78 Whatever oil you eat will go back into the cells. 00:15:53.81\00:15:56.66 When it stays in the fiber 00:15:57.21\00:15:58.84 and it slowly... 00:15:59.39\00:16:01.06 taking--the calories are 00:16:01.51\00:16:03.12 slowly taken out of those fibers, 00:16:03.13\00:16:05.21 then it doesn't turn the 00:16:05.57\00:16:06.78 cholesterol mechanism on in the liver, 00:16:06.79\00:16:08.69 and so your arteries start clearing out. 00:16:09.30\00:16:11.84 So this is something that's important, 00:16:12.27\00:16:13.75 but let's get back to the multiple sclerosis. 00:16:13.76\00:16:15.51 - Right, ok. But I had to talk about that for a minute! 00:16:15.63\00:16:18.12 - Ok good. 00:16:18.18\00:16:19.36 The multiple sclerosis story 00:16:19.37\00:16:22.24 is that these wire now don't have insulation on them, 00:16:22.69\00:16:26.12 and so her leg... 00:16:26.57\00:16:28.39 her left leg was feeling like it was bound up. 00:16:28.72\00:16:32.12 And so it wasn't a cramp, 00:16:32.51\00:16:34.24 it was hard for her to describe it. 00:16:34.25\00:16:36.51 But it was like something had wrapped around it tight. 00:16:37.24\00:16:40.33 And for some of the time that she was here, 00:16:40.75\00:16:43.03 it was getting less and less, 00:16:43.48\00:16:45.42 and for some of the time while she was here 00:16:45.43\00:16:48.18 she wasn't experiencing that. 00:16:48.42\00:16:50.18 And that's got to be some kind of a 00:16:50.63\00:16:52.54 change right there at the cellular level. 00:16:52.55\00:16:54.66 And I don't think the research that's 00:16:55.15\00:16:57.06 been done on it shows why that would be, 00:16:57.07\00:16:59.06 but I would suggest... 00:16:59.36\00:17:00.63 that because we've talked about this before, 00:17:01.48\00:17:03.60 when you eat the whole plant foods 00:17:03.61\00:17:05.27 and you get the prostaglandins... 00:17:05.78\00:17:07.69 - There's that word again! 00:17:08.57\00:17:10.03 -from the... when you get the prostaglandins 00:17:10.57\00:17:13.42 from the fats that are only from plants 00:17:14.00\00:17:16.42 it dilates the tiny little blood vessels. 00:17:16.69\00:17:19.33 And when the tiny little blood vessels are dilated up 00:17:20.06\00:17:23.42 we start seeing that those 00:17:24.18\00:17:25.84 nerves start getting healthy again. 00:17:25.85\00:17:28.18 And we've seen it over and over again with the diabetics. 00:17:28.39\00:17:31.54 And that's the same way that 00:17:32.66\00:17:35.00 we expect that to happen within a certain length of time 00:17:35.81\00:17:38.84 for most of the diabetics. 00:17:39.39\00:17:40.69 But multiple sclerosis we don't see it that often 00:17:41.24\00:17:43.75 and I hope that people will be encouraged because 00:17:43.84\00:17:47.30 from the research that's shown in real people. 00:17:47.75\00:17:52.63 They can go on 25, 30, 35 years, 00:17:53.18\00:17:57.09 and still be functioning. 00:17:57.48\00:17:58.72 and so you know, I hope that more and 00:17:58.84\00:18:01.06 more people will be willing to try this 00:18:01.07\00:18:03.24 You know I had a guest call me and ask me, they said 00:18:03.78\00:18:06.27 Well how do you know that the plant is better than meat? 00:18:06.54\00:18:10.21 And I said, Do you live near any farms? 00:18:10.39\00:18:13.48 She said, Yes I do. I said while drive by 00:18:13.51\00:18:15.54 take a look at the bull 00:18:15.75\00:18:17.36 out in the field, and tell me what you see the bull eating? 00:18:17.72\00:18:21.00 She says, Oh I got it! 00:18:23.57\00:18:24.81 And here's a bull, a healthy animal 00:18:25.06\00:18:27.21 that is strong and he's eating grass! 00:18:27.39\00:18:30.48 Why would you want to eat the bull rather than the grass? 00:18:31.09\00:18:34.45 Go right to the source! Eat the grass--so to speak. 00:18:34.46\00:18:37.45 - Yeah and we're eating the seeds from the grains, 00:18:37.84\00:18:41.21 and we're eating the seeds from the legumes. 00:18:41.63\00:18:43.60 And if you look at the world by and large, 00:18:44.00\00:18:45.87 that's where people are getting their calories. 00:18:45.88\00:18:48.12 But coming back to the multiple sclerosis thing... 00:18:48.42\00:18:52.27 Why should this turn around? 00:18:53.03\00:18:54.72 Well another thing that happens when 00:18:55.12\00:18:57.57 we go over to the plant based foods, 00:18:57.58\00:19:00.03 we get the immune system 00:19:01.06\00:19:03.63 starting to talk strait 00:19:04.45\00:19:07.27 to the different cells that are involved, 00:19:07.69\00:19:09.54 and then the body is not attacking itself. So this is 00:19:10.00\00:19:12.84 This is what they're saying, this is probably a auto immune 00:19:13.27\00:19:16.51 process, and so it would be in the 00:19:16.69\00:19:19.18 class with all the other auto immune things. 00:19:19.19\00:19:22.21 But even so, she's getting better, 00:19:22.60\00:19:24.69 I've spoken with her, and obviously she's-- 00:19:25.24\00:19:27.33 Yeah she was on about ten 00:19:27.34\00:19:28.39 different medications when she came. 00:19:28.40\00:19:29.81 She wanted to get off of her 00:19:30.09\00:19:32.15 blood pressure medication and her blood pressure 00:19:32.54\00:19:35.42 was very good today, 00:19:35.78\00:19:37.45 she's been off of it. 00:19:38.00\00:19:39.18 She wanted to get off of some of the other medications 00:19:39.30\00:19:41.54 because she felt she should in order to give herself... 00:19:42.00\00:19:44.27 and she's off about half of her medications now. 00:19:44.57\00:19:46.78 She's on a very special medication 00:19:47.33\00:19:49.42 which is very expensive, 00:19:50.36\00:19:52.00 it costs about a thousand dollars a week! 00:19:52.01\00:19:54.54 But that medication makes her 00:19:54.87\00:19:56.84 feel like she's got a really bad flu 00:19:56.85\00:19:59.24 every time she takes it. 00:19:59.51\00:20:01.03 So she would like to get off of that 00:20:01.18\00:20:02.54 one and we're hoping that she will. 00:20:02.55\00:20:03.84 And you're going to follow up with her 00:20:04.30\00:20:06.09 - And so are you! - And so am I! 00:20:06.54\00:20:08.60 Yeah and so that's exciting that we'll get 00:20:09.42\00:20:11.63 to follow along and see what's happening. 00:20:11.64\00:20:13.75 And you know, as we have more and 00:20:14.24\00:20:16.42 more of these cases and as they do 00:20:16.43\00:20:18.60 well, we can tell the other people, 00:20:18.84\00:20:20.81 Look, here's what's happened in all these cases 00:20:21.06\00:20:23.36 and you can do well as she has done. 00:20:23.81\00:20:26.36 So Doctor, I see once again 00:20:27.45\00:20:29.69 we have an individual that's come to us regardless of the 00:20:30.27\00:20:33.27 problems that she's dealing with 00:20:33.48\00:20:35.27 she's off half of her medications. 00:20:35.72\00:20:37.12 - Yes. 00:20:37.13\00:20:38.15 You know, I almost want to say-- and I'm a laymen not a doctor, 00:20:38.16\00:20:40.69 I want the viewers to know that, 00:20:40.70\00:20:42.12 Is this because people are given 00:20:44.12\00:20:46.06 pills that shouldn't be given those pills? 00:20:46.07\00:20:48.45 No, and the thing is, is that like this expensive medication 00:20:49.21\00:20:52.81 that is a help to her right now, 00:20:53.15\00:20:55.09 and she's in some kind of remission. 00:20:55.33\00:20:57.72 But in the long term, 00:20:58.27\00:20:59.42 you know, what's going to happen? 00:20:59.43\00:21:01.18 She needs to do the lifestyle thing so the body doesn't keep 00:21:01.51\00:21:04.69 attacking itself, and we just 00:21:05.24\00:21:06.63 keep trying to suppress them so they... 00:21:06.64\00:21:08.39 And that's the way so many of the auto immune things are 00:21:08.78\00:21:11.57 and people have transplants, 00:21:11.78\00:21:13.39 it's better to keep your own parts 00:21:13.54\00:21:15.39 because you always have to do something. 00:21:15.40\00:21:17.45 Dr. Lukens we're running out of time, 00:21:18.24\00:21:20.00 I want to thank you for joining us in the studio. 00:21:20.01\00:21:22.21 - Thank you, I love it. - See you next time. 00:21:22.39\00:21:23.75 And folks don't go away because we have 00:21:24.18\00:21:26.63 an important message for you in a moment. 00:21:26.64\00:21:29.24 Hello and welcome to NEWSTART AT HOME, 00:21:44.30\00:21:46.09 I'm your host Don Mackintosh. 00:21:46.10\00:21:47.39 And we're glad today to have in the studio 00:21:47.40\00:21:49.33 Dr. Neil Nedley who's the president 00:21:49.34\00:21:50.84 of Weimar here. We're glad that you're with us. 00:21:51.36\00:21:53.87 Thank you it's good to be here. 00:21:54.09\00:21:55.30 Now aside from being the president you're also, 00:21:55.39\00:21:57.84 you know, a physician-- internal medicine specialist, 00:21:57.85\00:22:00.60 but you've also developed a program 00:22:00.61\00:22:02.48 dealing with depression and depression recovery. 00:22:02.49\00:22:05.00 Correct yes, it's actually a program that 00:22:05.36\00:22:07.78 works well for treatment resistent depression. 00:22:07.79\00:22:10.51 And that means that people that have not responded well 00:22:11.24\00:22:13.87 to medications or counseling, or other forms of therapy. 00:22:13.88\00:22:16.57 However people that haven't been on medicines could 00:22:17.09\00:22:19.78 actually benefit from the principles of the program. 00:22:19.79\00:22:22.54 You know we've had patients that have 00:22:23.03\00:22:24.60 come through the NEWSTART program here. 00:22:24.61\00:22:26.33 And the NEWSTART program has you know, 00:22:26.34\00:22:28.03 all those different elements of nutrition exercise, 00:22:28.04\00:22:30.21 and I could go through the whole acronym, but 00:22:30.22\00:22:32.15 goes through those elements and they 00:22:32.69\00:22:34.39 seem to improve even here on this program. 00:22:34.40\00:22:36.27 Yes, that's right, they may come 00:22:36.45\00:22:38.30 here for heart disease or obesity 00:22:38.31\00:22:40.12 and find out their depression 00:22:40.57\00:22:42.03 improves as a result of the NEWSTART program. 00:22:42.04\00:22:44.12 So what is it about those elements 00:22:44.72\00:22:47.06 that is helping with their depression. 00:22:47.07\00:22:49.48 Well nutrition is what the first N stands for, and there are some 00:22:49.87\00:22:53.81 nutritional factors of a plant based 00:22:53.82\00:22:56.09 diet that can significantly help depression. 00:22:56.10\00:22:58.66 A plant based diet will actually improve brain serotonin levels, 00:22:59.12\00:23:03.63 brain dopamine levels, and norepinephrine levels. 00:23:04.15\00:23:07.06 And those are the three 00:23:07.33\00:23:08.57 neuro-chemicals that a lot of the 00:23:08.58\00:23:10.36 antidepressant pharmaceutical 00:23:10.37\00:23:11.87 companies are trying to manipulate. 00:23:11.88\00:23:13.69 But you can actually manipulate 00:23:14.24\00:23:16.21 those through a plant based diet. 00:23:16.22\00:23:18.24 So right here at Weimar during the NEWSTART 00:23:18.42\00:23:20.36 program they can get that. What about exercise? 00:23:20.37\00:23:22.39 Physical exercise also helps dopamine levels in the brain, 00:23:22.87\00:23:26.33 and serotonin also goes up in 00:23:26.34\00:23:28.09 response to vigorous physical exercise. 00:23:28.10\00:23:30.30 So if you're on a regular 00:23:31.00\00:23:32.33 exercise program it'll take about 00:23:32.34\00:23:34.09 seven days to get those 00:23:34.10\00:23:35.30 neuro-chemicals to start to move up, 00:23:35.31\00:23:37.15 just like it takes antidepressants 00:23:37.33\00:23:39.18 about seven days to start to work. 00:23:39.19\00:23:40.87 It will take about seven days and the exercise program will 00:23:41.48\00:23:44.66 really start to kick in and the 00:23:44.67\00:23:46.39 individual's mood will be enhanced. 00:23:46.40\00:23:48.27 Yeah, and you and I have seen that working together in these 00:23:48.81\00:23:51.48 programs off site by the same principles. What about water? 00:23:51.49\00:23:54.09 Water actually helps, you know in fact those 00:23:54.63\00:23:56.87 neuro-chemicals move through a water environment. 00:23:56.88\00:23:59.36 And so if we are well hydrated we're more efficient, 00:24:00.24\00:24:02.60 as far as our frontal lobe activity. 00:24:02.75\00:24:07.06 So adequate hydration is an 00:24:07.51\00:24:09.00 important part of depression recovery. 00:24:09.01\00:24:10.87 So just go through the rest we have, you know, 00:24:11.33\00:24:13.36 two and a half minutes in this short segment, 00:24:13.37\00:24:15.33 but sunlight and temperance and 00:24:15.34\00:24:16.66 all those others, just what are they? 00:24:16.67\00:24:18.30 Sunlight helps you in a couple of ways, 00:24:18.51\00:24:20.21 it improves vitamin D levels through the skin. 00:24:20.22\00:24:22.12 Vitamin D will then improve your melatonin levels at 00:24:22.36\00:24:25.57 night so you'll get much more restorative regenerating sleep. 00:24:25.58\00:24:29.33 And it also helps in the 00:24:29.87\00:24:31.42 daytime particularly in the morning, 00:24:31.43\00:24:33.57 morning sunlight, if it's blue sky, 00:24:33.58\00:24:35.69 and we have a lot of blue sky here at Weimar. 00:24:35.70\00:24:38.39 That wavelength of the blue actually 00:24:39.03\00:24:41.66 improves serotonin levels significantly. 00:24:41.67\00:24:44.60 And it helps to set the body clock. 00:24:45.09\00:24:46.48 So when you get your 00:24:46.49\00:24:47.69 sunlight in the morning, 00:24:47.70\00:24:48.84 you actually sleep better at night. 00:24:48.85\00:24:50.54 Wow, so NEWSTART environment itself, 00:24:51.24\00:24:53.60 that's what's causing this turnaround in patients? 00:24:53.61\00:24:56.84 - Exactly. - Fresh air? 00:24:57.06\00:24:58.75 Fresh air has negative ions, and negative 00:24:59.12\00:25:01.63 ions are produced by pine trees, waterfalls, 00:25:01.64\00:25:04.33 the ocean surf, 00:25:05.00\00:25:06.03 And what we have up here at Weimar, 00:25:06.36\00:25:08.45 not only some waterfalls, but we also have wonderful pine 00:25:08.46\00:25:11.78 trees that emit a lot of negative ions so when 00:25:11.79\00:25:14.54 you're just walking the campus and the trails 00:25:14.55\00:25:17.18 you can take in some real good 00:25:17.60\00:25:19.36 deep breaths, and almost feel your mood elevating, 00:25:19.75\00:25:22.75 and what's going on is those 00:25:22.76\00:25:24.45 negative ions are coming into your lungs and 00:25:24.46\00:25:27.12 actually producing some significant benefit. 00:25:27.13\00:25:29.63 Now we can't talk about rest, 00:25:30.24\00:25:31.69 but we could spend a whole segment on that, 00:25:31.70\00:25:33.84 but you know the last part of the 00:25:33.85\00:25:35.57 NEWSTART thing is Trust in a Divine Power. 00:25:35.58\00:25:37.63 And is there anything you want to say 00:25:37.64\00:25:39.51 about that in the end of our segment? 00:25:39.52\00:25:41.36 Well actually that's a scientific principle now, 00:25:41.54\00:25:44.54 it shows that people that actually have a 00:25:44.55\00:25:47.12 belief system and apply that belief system to their life, 00:25:47.13\00:25:50.60 recover from depression remarkably sooner. 00:25:50.61\00:25:53.18 And so having a trust in God and actually applying 00:25:53.72\00:25:57.84 that trust to your daily activities and your daily life 00:25:57.85\00:26:02.36 enhances the circulation of the frontal 00:26:02.84\00:26:05.15 lobe and that actually improves depression. 00:26:05.16\00:26:07.54 Well thank you so much for joining us Dr. Nedley. 00:26:08.09\00:26:10.75 And thank you also for joining us. 00:26:10.76\00:26:12.63 I think that from this short 00:26:12.64\00:26:14.24 segment you've found a lot of reasons 00:26:14.25\00:26:16.24 to call and learn more about the NEWSTART program, 00:26:16.84\00:26:19.48 or more about the depression recovery program, 00:26:19.78\00:26:22.15 and the same principles are working in both of those. 00:26:22.16\00:26:24.66 And we soon plan to offer those maybe even here on the campus, 00:26:25.27\00:26:28.30 the depression recovery component, 00:26:28.31\00:26:29.81 isn't that right? 00:26:29.82\00:26:31.00 Absolutely, depression recovery and other mental health 00:26:31.01\00:26:33.87 problems will actually be able to 00:26:33.88\00:26:35.72 be enhanced by coming to NEWSTART. 00:26:35.73\00:26:37.54 Want more information? Go to: 00:26:38.60\00:26:39.75 We're glad that you joined us, and we hope that you 00:26:41.24\00:26:43.42 have a new start as a result of watching today's segment. 00:26:43.43\00:26:45.78 Modern views of evolution stem all the way back 00:26:53.45\00:26:56.06 to theories developed in the mid-1800s. 00:26:56.09\00:26:58.48 Out of the same time period came ideas that shape 00:26:59.15\00:27:02.45 our educational system today. 00:27:02.48\00:27:04.63 The Common School Movement, for example, 00:27:05.27\00:27:07.54 saw schools more like a factory, 00:27:08.00\00:27:09.81 with students blindly memorizing instruction 00:27:09.82\00:27:12.57 rather than thinking for themselves. 00:27:12.60\00:27:14.57 Their curriculum was rigid and theoretical. 00:27:15.12\00:27:17.57 Instead of being flexible and practical, 00:27:17.58\00:27:20.42 it was designed to conform the individual 00:27:20.57\00:27:23.06 into a specific ideological mold 00:27:23.15\00:27:25.60 that fit the needs of an old industrial era 00:27:25.84\00:27:28.39 long since passed. 00:27:28.40\00:27:29.78 Just like our view of creation in six literal days, 00:27:31.15\00:27:34.39 we believe the Bible contains an educational blueprint 00:27:34.48\00:27:38.48 radically different from the one we see now. 00:27:38.75\00:27:41.21 Well friends that's it for today. 00:27:54.45\00:27:56.12 In the meantime give us a call at: 00:27:56.60\00:27:59.60 God bless you. 00:28:03.00\00:28:04.75
